Hernando DeSoto set out from Spain in April of 1538 with 10 ships and 700 men. In May 1539 they landed in Tampa Bay and eventually moved inland and set up camp at an Indian Village near present-day Tallahassee.

In the spring of 1540, Desoto led his men north through Georgia and encamped at the site of the spring located on Desoto Springs on the night of March 17, 1540. His expedition later led him through the Carolinas, Tennessee and west in search of gold and other treasures.
