EL DESTINO was first purchased by John Nutall, a wealthy Virginia planter, in 1828 as part of a US land grant.

The purpose of this venture was speculative in nature and the property represents one of the early pioneer plantations of the Florida territory. The land was discovered to be exceptionally fertile and, after the withdrawal of the Seminoles, was the scene of rather extensive settlement. The “Big House” was constructed on a bluff overlooking the rice ponds, while the driveway was lined for a distance of over a mile with what would become a magnificent oak allee.

1898 El Destino Hunt Party

In 1840, ownership changed when William Nutall’s widow, Mary, wed George Noble Jones, a member of a wealthy and illustrious Savannah, Georgia family. During this time period, the plantation was completely self contained with notable improvements including a gristmill, sawmill, and church. Additionally, in 1852, a canal was constructed from the gristmill site to the St. Marks River, thereby allowing for the transport of cotton and other goods, via barge, from the plantation to the Gulf ofMexico. The ante-bellum plantation lives only in memory, but the history and superb natural heritage of the area survive to this day and are perfectly exemplified at El Destino.
