Like many of you, we endured a trying year here at Briarwood Angus in 2020. Lock downs and down markets challenged many of the ways we do business. But we pressed on to finish the race. We also had to let our beloved Ann go home to the Lord. Now, we press on with her cheering from heaven. Such a year leaves people changed.

However, the day-to-day routines here at Briarwood that remain the same assure us that we are on the right track in our forward progess. The program we’ve developed and have been running here at Briarwood Angus for 57 years makes it possible to contend and win in beef production, while facing down daunting hurdles.

Pursuing efficiency is certainly one of the top performance disciplines demanded from Briarwood Angus genetics, where cattle are expected to finish well and affordably.

Less input for more output is more important than ever. It’s the difference between dropping out of the contest or being profitable on the bell lap. Likewise, carcass quality consistently sets the pace in the race to meet consumer demand. At Briarwood Angus, we START every breeding decision with the FINISH in mind.

Our winning team begins with fertile, docile, dependable bulls and moderate, fertile, high milking cows who breed easily and consistently. Then we maintain the tempo down the home straight by selecting for “easy keepers” and “easy breeders” who stay in production for a “LONG” time. Those are the genetic batons we want to pass to the next generation.

Efficiency is a Beef Deal!

In the past two years, Purina has partnered with Briarwood Angus in feeding demonstrations with weaning feeds.

In the fall of 2019 two drafts of calves were weaned in September and October and fed Purina Accuration Starter Complete with RX3 in a bulk self-feeder. Calves were weighed at weaning and 17 days later after consuming an average of 306 lbs of feed. The Briarwood calves gained an average of 4.04 lbs per day with a feed conversion efficiency of 4.5 lbs of feed per pound of gain. In the fall of 2020, the calves were fed 5 lbs of Purina Stress Care 5 with free choice hay and stockpiled fall pasture. After consuming 100 lbs of the Stress Care 5 per head, the calves were weighed and had gained an average of 3.4 lbs per day, which demonstrates the Briarwood cattle’s ability to thrive on forage with appropriate supplementation. In either year there was no death loss, no digestive issues such as bloat, and no antibiotic treatments needed for respiratory disease.
