Welcome to B/F Cattle Company’s 20th & LAST Maternal Integrity Bull Sale.
From the age of around 16, all I really wanted to do for a living was raise cows. I realized quickly that I had an eye and a knack for picking out the best and most productive cow families. A drive to produce the best cow herd possible for this environment led me to start crossing Gelbvieh bulls on Angus females in the mid-1990s. Since that time, we have grown to one of the largest registered Balancer operations in the country. Never losing sight of our goal to produce the most productive cow herd possible pushed us to the top of the list in Fescue country, for Dam of Merit females. We have grown to over 500 registered, home raised females and a handful of commercial cows. Not to mention, a rock solid bull pen.
However, this is our last registed bull sale. You see, 10 years ago I realized that, as successful as I seemed on the outside, I had made a wreck of myself on the inside. About that time, I hit rock bottom. I reached out my hand and Jesus took hold. He pulled me out of the muck and mire and helped me turn my life and my marriage around. I told Him back then that if He could save me from everything I had messed up, that I would do whatever He asked of me.
As life turned around, I naively thought that my purpose was to take what I thought were my God-given talents and make money to support charities, ministries and such things. This last year, however, God made it very clear that He didn’t need my money. He needed me. He wants me, actually, all of us, to draw close enough to Him, that we can be guided by the Holy Spirit to make godly decisions in whatever situation this world throws at us. For me, this is the only way that I believe I can achieve all that God created me to be.
I believe with everything in me that God’s Word is the only truth in this world. And Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed and progressively changed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
You see, for me to be all He created me to be for His sake, I must walk away from my worldly passions. For, they are just a distraction to my walk with Christ. In this current culture, especially the agriculture community, we tend to pride ourselves in busyness. I have come to realize that pride and busyness are both from the enemy and not from God. I am not sure what the futue will bring, but after selling our fall group of bulls private treaty, I am going to throw the registration papers away on our entire cow herd and simply run commercial cows.
I truly thought I was meant to be a cattleman for life. However, I am so excited to walk away from my goals and dreams to follow what God has for me, even though I have no idea what He may ask me to do.
I appreciate the great support we have had in this business and we are blessed with many friends that we would have never met otherwise.The main take-away I hope each of you get from this is that God created you for a much higher purpose than you may realize. And Jesus is much more real and alive than most church goers realize! I hope you meet Him on this side of eternity so you’ll know Him when we see Him face to face!

Sale Day Procedure
While remaining loyal to our intent to keep it simple and straight forward, we present our private treaty format with a live auction component conducted by Nance Auction Service. As a courtesy to our customers, the bulls sell in catalog order. Each lot is presented with a video of the bull on display. Bidding begins at the base price listed with each lot. We choose to do business without the pressure, enabling you to take home your preferred sire.

Liability: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. B/F Cattle Company assumes no liability for accidents, theft or damage occurring at the sale facility.
Trucking: We can help you arrange for delivery at your own expense, if you are unable to haul your purchase. We will provide free delivery on purchases over $20,000, anywhere in continental U.S
Terms & Conditions: Terms are cash or check, and payment is expected sale day. All cattle sell under the recommended terms and conditions of the American Gelbvieh Association.
Herd Health: All cattle will be ready for interstate shipment within the continental United States. All bulls are semen tested, and have been tested negative for trichomoniasis and P.I. BVD at Bates County Vet Clinic under the supervision of Trent Callahan, DVM, 660-679-3120. Bulls have been DNA tested for Homozygous Black and Homozygous Polled only if their parents are not homozygous for these traits, and this is denoted in the sale book for each lot. All bulls have had muliple rounds of blackleg & killed viral shots as calves. At semen check they received a Vira Shield 6 plus VL5, pinkeye vaccination, an injectable wormer and clean up pour on.

Guarantee: We guarantee disposition, fertility and any structural issues thought to be genetically related for one full year from sale date on every bull we sell!
Insurance: We will provide insurance against injury for one year from date of bull sale for a cost of 7% of the purchase price for purchases over $3000. In the event of a career ending injury, call and we will decide the best approaion. If there is not a grave injury, I would prefer to have the bull may be returned. In this instance, you would receive a full purchase price credit for your bull. No death warranty.
Sight Unseen Guarantee: For those who can’t attend in person, we offer a SIGHT UNSEEN GUARANTEE. If, upon receipt, the bull is not what you wanted, you can decline purchase without charge. If you cannot make it to the sale, call us ahead of time to discuss your needs and budget in order to provide a designated bidder. We will also be taking bids by phone sale day.

B/F’s Strategies for Fescue Country
Pelvic Measurements - At yearling time, our heifers average measurements are around 190 cm, which is pretty impressive. Pelvic areas are in direct correlation to the scrotal size of their sire. As we continue to demand bigger nutted bulls, the pelvics continue to grow as well.
Scrotal Size - As I just mentioned, pelvic areas and fertility are both an obvious improvement from big nutted bulls. For a bull to walk the pastures here, he needs to have at least a 37 cm at yearling time. And a 40 cm set at 18 months old. A bull with testicals like this will have much more fertility and longevity as far as semen quality goes. If you continually use bulls that measure like this, your yearling heifers will eventually have pelvic measurements around 200 cm, plus extra fertility.
Fertility - With generations of a “NO Excuse” approach to this area, we have built a herd that needs NO pampering in order to get bred back.
Structure & Udders - I will put these two together, as any cattleman worth his salt should be able to visually see the issues here and refuse to pass those genetics on to their customers.
Calving Ease - A NO Excuse philosophy here means that if I have to pull a calf for any reason, that cow either goes to town or is never allowed to raise a bull or replacement heifer again. By implementing this strict standard years ago, plus breeding for larger pelvics, we hardly ever pull a calf. The one or two a year that might need assistance are because of malpresentation (breach, leg back, etc.). And that’s out of 100-plus heifers and approximately 400 mature cows annually.
Birth Weight - Tied into the calving ease and pelvic areas obviously, cows are expected to have a calf between 60 to 85 lbs., and heifers typically calve 55- to 70-lb. babies. Cow families that make a habit of going over this are culled. Yes, the whole family if necessary.
Growth - Once again, cow families either have it or they don’t. Be cautious of getting too moderate on frame or you won’t have much to sell at weaning time. The other extreme is to shoot for 900 lbs. weaning weights which leads you to having 1800 lb. cows! Neither of which is profitable.
Carcass - We simply try to achieve a high Choice quality grade, with a good ribeye size and low yield grade. Last calves we sold to major packer went 100% Choice, 80% YG 1 & 2. If you try going to extremes in this area, you can wreck a good cow herd. I’ve seen it done.
To sum all of this up, if you want to have or keep a flawless, enjoyable cow herd, it is paramount that you buy bulls from an operation that can look past fancy EPDs, pedigrees and pretty pictures to see a registered cow’s true worth -- as if she were simply a commercial cow. In the end, that’s the way every cow needs to work.
