Catalog available online at www.briarwoodangusfarms.com Breeding Guarantee: Unless otherwise noted, all the breeding age bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam and are fertile to the best of our knowledge at the time of sale. In addition to the standard Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Associaiton, we will provide a first breeding season (the 90-day period immediately following turn out) guarantee on all yearling and older bulls in this sale. This guarantee is not an insurance or mortality policy, but a guarantee of functional fertility.It is not a substitute or replacement for poor management.

Buyer assumes all risks for injury due to running bulls together or management decisions outside of our genetic control. For the guarantee to apply, we ask that you contact us as soon as a condition is observed and before the animal is sold. We will work with you to determine the best course of action and reserve the right on a case by case situation to determine whether the animal is returned or sold for slaughter. We will attempt to provide a suitable replacement. If one cannot be provided, we will issue a credit to be used in a future sale for the full purchase price less the salvage value of the animal.

Delivery: We offer free delivery on bulls in Missouri, provided the buyer is able to make arrangements to receive bull when delivery is made to your area, usually within a few weeks of the sale. Due to fuel costs and time restraints, we may consolidate trips. If you are unable to receive bulls when delivery is scheduled to your area, you need to make arrangements to pick up your bull at the farm within two weeks of sale date. Each animal will be at purchaser’s own risk as soon as sold. Bulls will be cared for free of charge for 2 weeks following the sale should you have to pick them up.

Coming Two-Year-Old Bulls Our experience in feeding cattle at Briarwood Farms means utilizing pasture longer and limiting the time calves are in the feedlot to only 45 days, while achieving Prime and Choice at harvest. We steer approximately 50% of our bull calf crop and feed all heifers that do not meet our strict criteria as replacement females. Beginning at weaning and up until they reach approximately 1000 pounds, calves have access to ample grass consisting mostly of fescue, ladino clover and lespedeza. They’ll run to a large round bale filled with prairie hay when needed and we supplement with a ration of equal parts pelleted corn gluten, ground corn and ground prairie hay. Hand feeding allows for close observation and further develops much of the great disposition we’ve bred into our calves. The yearlings are then implanted and put on a self-feeder, while still enjoying grass pasture.

The ration is composed of corn and Purina® supplement and calves will remain on it until they reach approximately 1400 pounds. The last 45 days they are placed in a dry feedlot, prior to being harvested at National Beef through U.S. Premium Beef® in Dodge City, KS. Our calves are usually harvested at 16 months of age. The last load at U.S. Premium Beef® graded 30% prime with 100% choice or better and 95% qualifying for CAB®. We turn kill data into the American Angus Association and find carcass data and performance information very useful in our management of the BWF herd. We’ve harnessed Angus genetics that are adaptable and functional for our region and reduced the number of days on feed, while producing prime beef. From pasture to prime, Briarwood Angus breeds and feeds for profitable carcass genetics.

Briarwood Backs Angus Youth MSF Angus Carcass Contest

Briarwood Angus Farms has instituted two prestigious Angus carcass contests at the state and national levels to encourage young producers to pursue excellence. In 1998, Doc Long established the Missouri State Fair Angus Carcass Contest. FFA and 4-H members interested in exhibiting an Angus steer are eligible for multiple cash prizes when they enter in the Angus Steer classes and the On the foot Carcass Steer and Carcass Contest.

With the help of the Missouri Angus Association annual awards add up. If the Grand Champion on-the-rail overall carcass steer winner is a registered, purebred Angus and exhibited by a 4-H or FFA youth, there’s a $l000 payout!

First and second place winners and 4-H & FFA Champion & Reserve Division winners are eligible for cash prizes. Every 4-H and FFA junior member with a purebred Angus that enters in all carcass classes automatically earns $150 for their hard work and participation!

Exhibitors must pre-register each year to be eligible for prize money and other awards by meeting MSF entry deadline (July 1) and submitting a copy of registration papers and a copy of the completed entry form to Dr. Curtis Long by August 1.

It Takes a Team to Build Briarwood Beef From Brairwood Angus Farms’ beginning in 1964, Dr. Curtis W. Long, better known as “Doc,” has been actively involved in day to day management, and his wife Ann has served as bookkeeper. David Warfield joined our operation in 2002 and brings over 25 years experience in beef cattle management. He works tirelessly in day-to-day management, seeing to herd health and nutrition, while skillfully selecting and perpetuating genetics that enhance progeny and exponentially advance our herd.

Robert Fleischer assists Dave with general operations and brings to the team a steady dependability and is an excellent AI technician. Russell Epperson has dedicated heart and soul to various projects on behalf of the Longs, including management of L & E Outdoors, and creation and sales of trademarked product Scent Thief.
