TO ISSUE 39 OF THE WEALDEN EYE Hooray! Spring is here! I love it when the leaves on the trees start to come through – it is beautiful!

With the warmer weather coming it means the bluebells will be with us soon, I can’t wait to see them in the lovely woodlands we have around us.

The Bluebell Walk in Arlington will be open from Saturday the 8th of April until Sunday the 14th of May, every day from 10.00am until 5.00pm. This will be their 45th year operating the walk and during that period they have raised over £888,000 for 70 local charities since 1972!

There has been some great stuff happening in town with the Hailsham & District Chamber of Commerce getting together with local traders to create a ‘Pop Up Shop’ there are more details on page 50 or check out their website www.hailshamchamberofcommerce.co.uk Be sure to take a look at some of the great events a handful of our advertisers have got running over the next two months, Lime Cross Nursery, The Well Being Centre, The Hailsham Lions and lots more have got some really exciting things to do in the area.

Getting to know your Local Pharmacist

By Chris Trinh Pharmacist Manager at Kamsons Pharmacy, Hawkswood Rd, Hailsham I am the new pharmacist manager at Kamsons Pharmacy on Hawkswood Road and would like to thank all of the patients, customers, doctors and staff for making me so welcome. It has been a real pleasure meeting many of you in the pharmacy. Many of you may remember my cousin, Colin, who was the first pharmacist at the pharmacy when it opened.

As we approach the hayfever season, many will find that they will develop itchy eyes, a runny nose and sneezing.

Fortunately, it is easily treated over-the-counter for less than a NHS prescription charge. We sell non-drowsy antihistamines for from only £1.95 for a month’s supply. However, some who suffer

badly may require a triple treatment of antihistamine tablets, a steroid nasal spray and anti-allergy eye drops. All three will give some immediate relief but work better if used regularly. They are not suitable for everyone so please come in and have a chat and I will recommend what is most suitable for your individual needs.

With the winter training sessions now behind us we look forward to the start of the outdoor season getting under way.

four new players along to the sessions as well as over 40 members who attended sessions in February/March.

We have been delighted to welcome 21 new junior members to the club since January. They have all made huge strides forward and have fitted in extremely well at the club. We were also fortunate to have four new volunteer/coaches join up with the club, this not only allows us to take on more children but also offers a better quality.

With the days getting warmer and the nights getting lighter it means we are soon going outside for our training sessions at the recreation ground. With new captains appointed at the recent AGM the whole club is excited at the challenges ahead of us in 2017.

These appointments came of the back of a recent survey monkey that the club put out to all the junior and senior members and families. The adult sessions were also a huge success where regular weekly training and development was clearly visible. We welcomed

BACK IN TIME

Just stepping back a decade this time where two singles as different as chalk and cheese were trying to dislodge one glam rock act’s debut number one. Curious?

Good – here goes. Sitting at the top of the chart in April 1971, a position it dominated for six weeks, was Marc Bolan’s T Rex with “Hot Love”, the follow-up to “Ride A White Swan”. The song also marked (no pun intended) Bolan’s first step into glam rock when, on the weekly chart programme “Top Of The Pops”, he wore glittery makeup and shiny satin stage wear.

His move triggered the fashion movement that followed, where groups like Sweet took the new look to excess. Gloriously, colourful times when glitter and sparkles were on gay display.

The pair of singles stuck below “Hot Love” were Ray Stevens’ “Bridget The Midget” (totally unpc these days, more’s the pity), said to refer to an erotic American film actress, and “Rose Garden” from country singer Lyn Anderson. Penned by Joe South, it was first recorded in 1967 by Billy Joe Royal, who two years later

1971 released the runaway hit “Down In The Boondocks”. With the top three positions in gridlock, it must have been a very frustrated Paul McCartney who waited a rung lower with “Another Day”, only to climb one step above the following week.

On their way up the top thirty was a pot pourie of music, like Perry Como’s “It’s Impossible”, Deep Purple’s “Strange Kind Of Woman”, Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, Diana Ross, with Dave and Ansil Collins hitting the top twenty.

By May ’71, their “Double Barrel” had bypassed all the stragglers, to hit the top. This Jamacian duo’s brand of reggae hit the mark with record buyers, and was the first of only two charting singles, when its follow-up “Monkey Spanner” peaked at number seven in the June. Still, it was better than nothing.

With “Hot Love” hanging on immediately below “Double Barrel”, Dawn’s “Knock Three Times” was making great strides. A silly song really, telling the story of two people living in separate apartments in a tenement block. The guy falls in love with the woman in the flat below his, and the only way he can discover if she’s interested, is to suggest she knock three times on her ceiling for ‘yes’, or bang on the heating pipes for ‘no’. I kid you not!

Thankfully the British flag was rising with The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar”, and “It Don’t Come Easy” from Ringo Starr, in competition with each other for the pole position. Hah, guess who beat them to it? You’ve guessed it – the silly song!

Family Fun Day Sunday 23rd July To coincide with the 100th birthday of the Lions worldwide, the Hailsham Club are joining forces with Hailsham Active to hold their largest fundraiser of the year with a Family Fun Day on Sunday, 23 July.

An assortment of attractions, sports activities and games will be geared towards children and adults who like to enjoy themselves, plus a BBQ and refreshments, with music from Hailsham FM.

There will also be a selection of stalls to tempt visitors. One of the highlights will be Maria Williams’ Fun Dog Show, which proved so successful at the Club’s last country fair.

Why we love Body Stress Release: Marie: Having regular BSR keeps my body in balance and free from muscle tension and stress. One of the most worthwhile things an MP can do is to bring people together. Whether it is a charity with a potential supporter, a community sports team with potential members or a business with potential customers, MPs are lucky to have a full range of local contacts and the ability to get one person talking to another.

Recently I was able to bring local businesses together with students and parents at the Hailsham Community College Careers Fair, which I was delighted to sponsor.

It is crucial that we show our young

people the range and number of opportunities open to them, so that they go forward into their futures with excitement and passion.

We were joined by exhibitors including small local businesses, large national organisations, apprenticeship schemes, training providers and the public sector.

It was an amazing collection of innovation, talent and inspiration.

Wealden may be leafy, but it boasts businesses and enterprises of the very highest calibre such as Scientifica, which manufactures scientific instruments.

Scientifica won the Export Business and Overall Business of the Year Awards at the recent British Chambers of Commerce Awards, and I was delighted to join them as they marked their success by opening the London Stock Exchange at the beginning of a day’s trading.

Hong Kong Whilst for many a visit to Hong Kong is a short city break en route to Australia or New Zealand, in our opinion it has plenty to offer as a ‘stand alone’ destination.

car to see the giant Buddha statue. From here, take a bus to Tai O – a traditional fishing village built on stilts over the water, where a sense of the Hong Kong of yesteryear can be understood. Take a boat trip to see the rare Chinese pink dolphins.

There are many other islands to be explored – Lamma Island offers a gentle hike between its two main towns, with great seafood restaurants the reward at the end.

Cheung Chau Island is most famous for its Bun Festival in May, but is also home to plenty of seafood restaurants, a sandy beach and a temple.

A popular pastime for locals is horse racing, and to take in an

evening of racing at Happy Valley or Sha Tin is an experience to consider. Hong Kong even has two theme parks to offer – Ocean Park has thrill seeking rides along with a zoo, and is reached via a cable car ride. Disneyland offers fun for all the family in typical Disney style located on Lantau Island.

All in all, a week to ten days in Hong Kong provides all of the ingredients for a great holiday destination.

Hailsham School

Following the retirement of Mr & Mrs Towler in 1911, their son-inlaw Robert Hills, who had been teaching at the school for some years was appointed headmaster of the Boy’s School. Like his predecessor Mr Hills was an active member of the Parish Church where he was Secretary to the Parochial Church Council (PCC).

Mr Hills introduced ‘modern’ methods of education including after school staff meetings when he discussed with the teachers their work and improvements might be achieved. Use of the cane remained, particularly for truancy.

Chalk was also used as recalled by one former pupil, “Miss Foster was very good with the chalk, she’d throw that at you if you were misbehaving.” He added that school life was strict and pupils were not rude to teachers, “they daren’t be.”

School began at 9.00am with assembly from there pupils went to their classrooms. They went home for lunch as there were no school dinners. There was no mixing of the sexes and the boys and girls had their breaks separately.

Another former pupil recalled some of her memories of the (girls) school. Respect for teachers did not end at the school gate, “if you met

Mr Hills was head during the First World War and he soon lost three teachers. In total 82 former pupils and staff were killed and their names are recorded on the school’s memorial tablet which was unveiled on 1 August 1919 by Colonel Owen. The event was recorded in the Parish Magazine as a, “solemn occasion and must have had a good effect on the boys.” Three former scholars had been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, nine the Military Medal, one Victoria Cross. During the war women teachers replaced the men. However after the war the men began returning. Reporting on this in the Parish magazine April 1919 the Vicar wrote, “those who so nobly took their place when they were called up now want to be relieved and to go back to the Woman’s sacred place, their homes.”

In the Parish Magazine, June 1921, Mr Hills wrote, “It has been my desire for several years to introduce something of the Public School spirit into the school and I can confidently say that the efforts have been attended with good results. There is keener desire on the part of the lads to play the game and to play it for the School. The spirit of unselfishness has been fostered and I hope to see that spirit prevails still more in the future.”

On 28 September 1928 the school celebrated its jubilee, 50 years since the school opened. Celebra-

tions included stoolball and cricket matches between the past and present scholars. The past scholars won the cricket match which was described by the Sussex Express as, “a jolly affair.”

All schools had been encouraged to develop gardening to, “prevent or correct those tendencies in the minds of the children which show themselves in contempt for manual labour and to cultivate powers of observation and reasoning and to instil the qualities of carefulness and patience.” In November 1920, a press report referred to, “excellent work by boys in the (Hailsham) school gardens and in 1924 they won the schools gardening competition.

The school participated in the East Sussex Elementary Schools Cricket League and won the (east) divisional final in 1911 and 1920.

However they never managed to win the final until 1930 when they were again east division champions and Portslade the west. The final was played on 30 July 1930 at The County Ground in Hove where Hailsham won by 122 runs. T Gardener scored 105.

In 1933 the school cricket team again reached the county final when they beat Lindfield. Earlier in the year the school football team reached the county final where they beat St Wilfrid’s School, Haywards Heath, 2-1 after extra time. So Hailsham were the county Cricket and Football champions in the same year.

Sports Days were a feature during this period. They took place every year at the Recreation Ground in

The “white” boys were those who lived on the west side of the railway and the “blues” came from the east side.

In 1934 the two schools became a single school and was renamed Hailsham Senior Mixed School.

Shortly afterwards, in 1936 Mr Hills retired. He was succeeded by Charles Russell whose headship continued through the war years during which more former pupils lost their lives. One pupil recalling life at the school during the war years wrote, “We spent so much time sitting under desks avoiding the bombs and the dogfights that I didn’t learn much. I remember all the school windows were taped up.”

Another wrote, “We were working in the school garden, which was once the playing fields now turned into a fruit and vegetable garden.

Suddenly the teacher yelled out to us to take as the siren sounded. As I looked up directly above me, a black Doodlebug appeared and its engine stopped. It was falling to the earth when a British fighter plane appeared, and the pilot very bravely

put the wing of his plane under the wing of the doodlebug, making it fly a further 7 miles, before crashing and exploding in open fields.” In 1945 the school was renamed Hailsham County Modern School and Hailsham County Secondary School in 1950.

In 1951 Ernest Tomlinson became the fourth headmaster and in 1959 additional classrooms were provided together with metal and woodwork rooms and science laboratories. A larger building programme took place between 1964-65 when the boy’s classrooms built at the beginning of the century were demolished and replaced with new classrooms, staff room, assembly hall, dining room, kitchen and gymnasium.

During this period regular Speech Days were held. The chairman of the governors presided and the school regularly attracted an important guest to present the prizes. Most notable was Sir Edward Boyle the then Minister of Education (1965). During the Speech Days the headmaster presented his report outlining the achievements and activities during the year. At the con-

clusion a vote of thanks was given to the special guest by the Head Boy and Head Girl. This was followed by some musical items, frequently Jerusalem and The Lord’s my Shepherd. The event ended with the National Anthem.

James Quinn became head in 1970 and the following year the school became Hailsham Comprehensive School. During Mr Quinn’s years as head came the largest programme of building and extension.

In 1974 the Science Block was provided followed by the Craft Block in 1977. In 1979 further classrooms were added and in 1983 drama and music rooms were provided.

The school was renamed Hailsham Community College 1993.

Lesley Farmer was appointed principal in 1998. In 2000 the College was awarded Sports College status and in 2001 a floodlit all weather multi-sports pitch which was opened and a new lottery-funded sports hall in 2006. Mrs Farmer continued as Principal until 2011 when she was seconded to OFSTED and the Deputy Principal Phil Matthews was appointed Acting Principal. Mrs Farmer did not return to the school and Mr Matthews was appointed as the permanent Principal in 2012. During these more recent years there has been a broadening of the curriculum and a greater involvement in serving the Hailsham community as well as a steady improvement in GCSE and A level passes.

GARLIC & HERB PRAWNS Preparation time: 25 min + marinating time Cooking time: 5 - 6 mins INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 12 Raw prawns in their shells • Juice of half a lemon • 2 Garlic cloves - crushed • 3 tbsp Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill • 3 tbsp softened butter

Rinse the prawns. Use a sharp knife to slice along the back of each prawn from head end to tail and remove the thin black intestine.

• Salt and pepper

Mix the lemon juice with the garlic, herbs and butter to form a paste.

Season well with salt and pepper and spread the paste over the prawns. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes.

Preheat a frying pan. Fry the

prawns until cooked, tossing them several times to distribute the heat evenly.

Turn out on to warm plates and drizzle with the juices from the pan.

Serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread.

Preheat the oven to 170 Celsius

Pour into a loaf tin and bake for 20 – 25 minutes

Pop-Up Shop Opens in Hailsham High Street to benefit local traders Hailsham & District Chamber of Commerce have secured funding through the Wealden Strategic Partnership – Strong Resilient Communities Fund for a Pop up Shop in Hailsham High Street as part of a project to help small business owners, trial a high street presence in a low cost, low risk environment.

The Chamber are pleased to announce that a lease has been secured on No 41 High Street Hailsham and after some initial works it is intended that the shop will be open for a period of 13 months enabling traders to use it for a minimum of one week and a maximum of two weeks at a discounted price.

Petrina Mayson, Chair of Hailsham Chamber and Chief Exec of Now Charity Group, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer small businesses who want to trial
