THE WEALDEN EYE

Thank you for picking up the latest issue for our Summer edition we have a few of things we would like to mention. A massive congratulations needs to be given to our friends at Maybugs in Hailsham, although they didn’t take top prize in The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2019 they came a very close second which is a great honour, Greg and the team will always be a winner in our eyes. Well done and we always look forward to going in to get gifts for our family and friends. Hailsham Town Council have made a press release saying that the Hailsham Post Office will be back operating in the town at No.14 High Street by the end of June. A huge effort from all the staff and councillors at the Town Council, thank you for the time and commitment you have shown in gaining the shop back in Hailsham, I’m sure a lot of our readers will welcome the facilities back. We are excited, and we hope that you are too! It’s Back! Raw Organic Milk by Hook & Son Farm in Hailsham is back on the shelves again. It has been a very long time since the first TB reactor stopped the farm selling the product and if it wasn’t for their loyal customers and supporters the farm wouldn’t be where it is now, whilst the raw milk wasn’t available Steve and Phil started different ways to keep the farm running and you can find more info on page 22 As always, we hope you enjoy reading and have a great couple of months. Training award winners! By Chandni Yadav, Pharmacist Manager at Kamsons Pharmacy, Hawkswood Rd, Hailsham Chandni Yadav

At Kamsons Pharmacy we were proud and honoured to win in the Training and Development category in the profession’s Chemist and Druggist magazine Awards held last month at The Intercontinental Hotel at the O2 in Greenwich. There were another six pharmacies and NHS organisations shortlisted in this category so we were especially pleased to win against strong contenders.

Our award was for our preregistration pharmacist training programme whereby we recruit about 20 pharmacy University graduates each year at the end of their four-year degree. They then spend a year working with us and we provide them with excellent training for which we won this award. We were recognised for our innovative collaborative approach where we work with lecturers from

the University of Cambridge Medical School, help to also train hospital pharmacy preregistration pharmacists, undertake visits to a hospice for training in palliative care and are the only pharmacy company to have a 100% pass rate for two year’s running in the General Pharmaceutical Council’s registration exam.

secluded. They fill very quickly, and your wildlife experience could be compromised if you wait until the last minute. Planning your itinerary ensures that you make the best of your time in Africa. Remember that the schools in the Southern hemisphere take their “summer” holidays over Christmas and into January.

Australia As you are deciding what to put on the BBQ it may seem crazy that you should be thinking about your holiday over Christmas, but if you do not want to be disappointed you should act now. This particularly applies to the following types of holiday: •Our winter is a particularly popular time to visit New Zealand – this is their summer, and generally offering the best weather to enjoy activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking to name but a few. Some of the best accommodations (in our opinion) are

Africa

the boutique hotels and small B&Bs – these book up well in advance so booking early is key. •Central and southern parts of Australia are great to visit during our winter (the northern part of the country will be in wet season) and offer almost endless possibilities for the self-driver with stunning scenery, interesting wildlife and a fascinating culture. •Skiing places both in Europe and further afield such as Canada and the United States do fill quickly especially during the school holidays and at the most popular resorts. If you want to learn a new sport such as dog sledding or snow mobiling then research now will get you to the right place and with the right provider. •Winter is one of the best times to go on safari in East and Southern Africa and many of the very best lodges and campsites are small and

Canada •With long winter nights in the far north of the northern hemisphere, there is a good chance of observing the phenomenon of Aurora Borealis (the northern lights). Alaska is fantastic for this, but if you prefer something a little closer to home, consider a trip to Iceland or perhaps a voyage on a Hurtigruten ship along the coast of Norway. So, act now to disappointed later.

TREE SURGERY ARBORICULTURE CONSULTANCY SUMMER TREE CARE TIPS Mulching Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil and decreases the growth of weeds around your tree. The best mulch material is natural wood chips. The rule on mulch is to apply a 10 centimetre thick layer around the tree trunk as far out from the base of the tree as possible.

Bark protection Use tree guards to help protect the bark if strimming or mowing under and around trees. This another reason why creating an area of mulch is beneficial.

Watering Newly planted trees require regular watering for the first 3 years after planting. Lack of water is actually the number one cause of tree death, so it is very important to make sure your tree is getting enough. Our recommended watering method is to give your tree a good deep soak twice a week. Leaving a trickling hose around the root zone of tree for 15 minutes is best.

Pests and Diseases Keep an eye out for pests and diseases throughout the summer months. Be it be fungi, squirrel damage, caterpillars or crown dieback, if in doubt call an expert for advice.

Puppy’s Home! With over 25 years of working with dog behaviours Lesley offers a little help for you and ‘man’s best friend’

The moment that you’ve been planning for has arrived, a new puppy to join the family - but within a short while of being in your home he may have pooped on the carpet, drawn blood from every member of the family with his razor sharp teeth, knocked your cup of tea off of the table and chewed your shoes! You frantically cling to the memory of what life was like before pup arrived! You thought that dogs were supposed to lower stress levels and yours are through the roof! Before you make this commitment. Check that you have time to spend most of the day with the dog, they will require regular meals, opportunities to go to the loo and company. Make sure that your garden is dog proof. A dog will require long walks come rain or shine when it gets older. You will need a chew proof bed for the dog, with something soft inside and a good quality puppy food. You get what you pay for, a good quality age appropriate food could save £££’s in vets bills later in life. It is worth considering purchasing a crate, it provides a safe den for the dog particularly if something is draped

12 w w w . t h e w e a l d e n e y e . c o . u k

over the top. It assists with house training and gives you the opportunity to have some time out when you need a break. Crates should be introduced by feeding and playing with the dog inside it and then encouraging him in there when he is tired, once the dog is asleep in the crate then the door can be shut. Now that the dog has a den of its own note that this should always be a safe haven and never a place of punishment. Avoid extended periods in there or it will change from safe haven to prison cell. Do

Give plenty of praise and reward when something is done correctly. Set your dog for success – they will learn faster – the key to success is fun. Take a break if you begin to lose your temper, stay calm and in control. Introduce puppy to leash walking in the garden first. Use positive training methods. Let out a high pitched yelp if your

puppy nips you, let him know it hurts and stop your interaction immediately. House training

Take

your dog out regularly to relieve himself, especially when he has just woken or been fed

Praise the dog and choose a suitable word when he is going in the right place.

Be vigilant watch for sniffing indoors, get there first and calmly take him out. Place puppy training pads on the floor near the door, these have a scent that encourages the dog to use them. Clean regularly soiled areas with a special odour neutraliser. Avoid

Hitting your dog, even with a rolledup newspaper it is unnecessary and will have a detrimental effect on your relationship. Use a choke chain, there are many kind and effective methods to help with dogs that pull that do not risk damaging the dog’s throat and Thyroid gland. Push your dog into position when training use food and gentle encouragement. Give in to attention seeking behaviour – with some dogs any attention is better than none! Feed the dog from the meal table. Soiling

Reprimand house soiling as this can lead to anxiety problems. This is a very brief overview, if you are having problems enlist the help of a good trainer, it could make all the difference!

A W ORD FR OM WESTMIN STER

The Sparkling Jewel in the South East’s Crown Nus Ghani, MP

The terroir in East Sussex rivals that of Champagne for the mineral depth and complexity of the soil. The need for expert local knowledge means that vineyards will continue to train, develop, and employ local people’s skills at all stages in the life-cycle of the wine. That’s why I’ve championed the use of English wines by the Department for International Trade and the Foreign Office during receptions. When you’re sending your diplomats out to secure us the trade deals that will allow us to thrive post-Brexit, only the best will do.

My Husband and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary in Tunbridge Wells. Eating at The Warren, we drank sparkling wine from the Bluebell Vineyard in East Sussex, and ate wonderful, local produce from the Crowborough Estate. We didn’t have to travel many miles for that meal, and neither did our food and drink. But, we were surrounded by people who had made some very long journeys indeed. The South East is gaining a global reputation for the quality of its still and sparkling wines, and for the hospitality industry surrounding it. This reputation is rightly deserved, and with English Wine Week having just been and gone, it’s important to reflect on how far this sector, which is a major employer in Wealden, has come.

Over the last decade or so, it has been incredibly exciting to hear more and more stories of English wines beating their continental and global competitors in blind taste tests. This success has lead to a boom for the sectors, with more and more vineyards starting up. A record number of English wine companies were launched in 2016. Sixty-four new wine businesses put down roots in England and Wales, up 73 per cent on the previous year. UK producers now produce upwards of 5 million bottles a year, and leading the way is the South East. Just like wine, the sector is something that is only going to improve with age as well.

It’s not just diplomats and trade negotiators that are getting to try our wines either: thanks to the Government’s new export strategy, which boosts British businesses by supporting and connecting companies so that they can grow, more companies than ever have access to our overseas network, as well as new online tools that the government has made available. The government is helping make sure that these businesses go global. It’s working too: with over £13 billion more in exports this year than last. So, I hope you’ll join me in raising a glass to our fantastic vineyards: an international success story which provides well-paying jobs for local people: the perfect blend of the proud rural heritage of the South East of England, and modern agricultural know-how.

HOME SWEET HOME Buying a property should be exciting. Not exhausting. All too often, the prospect of dealing with the ‘conveyancing bit’ of moving home can be a little bit daunting. At Barwells Solicitors, we believe it can be better than that. We think the whole process should be made as straightforward and painless as possible. You should be kept right up to date with what’s going on, in everyday language, rather than ‘lawyerspeak’. In fact we don’t just think it, we do it.

MUSIC FILE 37

BACK IN TIME

Hold on to your vinyl! The time machine is racing back a decade to the sixties where the singles charts reflected British acts taking control in their battle to beat the continuing influx of American music. It was a competitive time for sure. The popularity of Trad Jazz remained though. Following Acker Bilk’s 1960 success, he went on to enjoy three further hits during 1961, with Kenny Ball ranking second in the selling power stakes. However, most of the mainstream music was aimed at the youngsters who wanted to have fun – or so I’m told! Del Shannon, who co-wrote “Runaway”, was born Charles Weedon Westover, in Michigan. Originally recorded as “Little Runaway”, the single with the abbreviated title hit the top of the British chart in July 1961. Telling the story of a guy whose lover deserted him, the song launched Mr Shannon as a household name, as his hit trail racked up a total of eight hits by 1965. With The Jordanaires as backing vocalists, Elvis Presley’s somewhat evocative “Surrender” waited patiently at number two to replace Del Shannon. Adapted from the 1902 Neapolitan ballad “Torna A Surriento” (“Come Back To Sorrento”) it became one of his top selling singles of all time. Released on a bright red record

J U LY / A U G U S T

1961 label that was difficult to miss, The Everly Brothers’ rather dramatic “Temptation” was their 15th British chart entry, and destined to reach the pole position. It followed “Walk Right Back”, one of three previous chart toppers. (“All I Have To Do Is Dream” and “Cathy’s Clown”), and was their last to hit the top, although their lucrative recording career continued through to 1985. Incidentally, “Temptation” was originally introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1933 film “Going Hollywood” but Don and Phil recorded the most commercial version. Just under this was The Temperance Seven’s “Pasadena”. A British group specialising in a unique styling of 1920’s jazz, they were applauded for their surreal performances. Originally penned as “Home In Pasadena”, this new version stalled in the top five. Ricky Nelson’s “Hello Mary Lou”, Hackneyborn Anthony Newley’s take on the popular nursery rhyme “Pop Goes The Weasel”, Roy Orbison, Neil Sedaka and Bobby Vee were not far behind with their eyes on the top. Regrettably, they didn’t make it.

Shapiro with “You Don’t Know”, sitting at number two. She would hit the top, staying for three weeks, and selling a million copies on the way. “Walking Back To Happiness” followed this to return the British singer to the pole position. After an extremely successful career as a singer and actress, Helen retired from the business in 2002. Hot on her heels was another teen idol, Billy Fury with “Halfway To Paradise”, originally recorded by Tony Orlando. Although Billy’s version stayed on the chart for 23 weeks, it bypassed the top spot. Climbing up the chart with a vengeance were 21-year-old Cliff Richard with “A Girl Like You”, and Petula Clark’s “Romeo”, a re-working of the 1919 song by the Austrian composer Robert Stolz entitled “Salome”. Behind them were Adam Faith’s “Don’t You Know It”, John Leyton, Shirley Bassey, The Shadows, Tommy Steele and The Brook Brothers, Geoff and Ricky, with “Ain’t Gonna Wash For A Week”. As if!

Sharon Davis Oh my, this guy had looks to die “Soul and Motown Show”: for…Richard Graham Sarstedt, 6pm – 8pm every Saturday better known as Eden Kane. “Well on Hailsham 95.9 FM I Ask You” was the top single in the August and followed his debut “Hot Chocolate Crazy” which I’ve never heard! Too busy looking at his pictures as a teenager I guess. Born in New Delhi, he had the sultry looks to go with his deep rich voice….oh, stop it! His brother Peter was also a successful singer, but it’s best if we move on. To 14-year-old Helen

Raw milk helps with cholesterol too, as it is in its natural state in raw milk and the body can use it, whereas cholesterol in pasteurised milk has been heat treated thereby altering it, making it more difficult for the body to use. Other farm news

Our cow Ida that had to be TB retested, went clear on the 23rd May. It was great when our vet said “Yep, Ida’s fine” as he ran his hand over her neck. We were now officially TB free again, but couldn’t quite yet sell raw milk, as we now needed to re-register with the Food Standards Agency to sell raw milk. On the 10th June, the FSA carried out an inspection and took a milk sample that had to pass FSA hygiene standards. Steve had the phone call from the FSA at 5pm on Friday 14th June to say the milk sample had passed, and that we can sell raw milk again!

Raw milk

Although we have got our raw milk registration back, we are still also selling pasteurised milk, cream and butter, as well as raw milk, cream and butter. If you would like to have our milk and other products from the farm delivered to you on the doorstep, contact the

June was very wet! This high rainfall delayed our first cut of our crop of grass from the fields we have not grazed. This yield of grass is cut and conserved for the cows’ feed next winter. We need approximately 1000 tonnes in total to feed our 80 cows from the end of October, when the cows come in for the winter, until April when they are turned back out into the fields. We had a high yield of grass, as we had more grass growth with all the rain, but the quality of the grass silage may not be so good, as the grass had to be cut later, and had lost some of its leaf and had started to seed.

Although we believe our pasteurised milk is a great milk, our raw milk is superior in taste and there are many reasons why people want raw milk and not pasteurised. Customers have told us that switching to raw dairy has helped with their excema, hay fever and asthma. It is thought that 80% of people who are lactose intolerant, aren’t actually lactose intolerant, but pasteurised milk

We are starting a new enterprise with 5 caravanning pitches available. Mains water supplied. Lovely location overlooking the Pevensey Levels, with the cows walking past for milking. The first ever Mad Marsh Run was held on the farm on the 28th April. The weather was good, with marshals briefed and in place, when the 190 runners started the Obstacle Course Run (OCR) at 10am. They had bog, trees, straw bale walls, and twenty-eight ditch jumps to contend with. HISTORIC HAILSHAM

Captain Barclay Through the years that I have been writing this column I have occasionally described a single individual who made a significant contribution to the town. All were either born in the town or moved here. In this article I want to describe a man who had a relatively brief association with the town yet he achieved national fame and was involved in some activities which brought national figures to the town.

Captain Barclay, aged 64

Captain Robert Barclay known simply as Captain Barclay was born on 25 August 1779, in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was a member of an ancient Scottish family, who amongst other achievements founded Barclays Bank. Robert’s father, also Robert, was widowed but he remarried Sarah Ann Allardice, a descendant of Robert II of Scotland and of the Earls of Airth, Mentieith and Strathearn. In recognition of the nobility of his wife’s family Robert Barclay Snr. thereafter took the surname of Allardice. Robert Snr was a noted pedestrian, who once walked 510 miles (820 km)

from Ury (the family home) to London in 10 days. He died in 1797 leaving Robert Junior and his siblings effectively as orphans, their parents having divorced four years earlier. Robert returned home from boarding school in an attempt to take over the family estate. However that responsibility was with the twelve guardians appointed by his father until Robert reached his majority. Regrettably Robert Snr had left substantial debts and in an attempt to repay the debts and retain the family land and possessions his son turned to the task of pedestrianism and was later involved in prize fighting. Robert developed into an outstanding athlete and won considerable sums through walking prizes as well as side bets. His feats included walking 110 miles in 19 hr 27 min in a muddy park in 1801. In 1802 he walked 64 miles in 10 hours and in 1805 72 miles between breakfast and dinner. This was followed in 1806 when he walked 100 miles over bad roads in 19 hours and then in 1807 78 miles on hilly roads in 14 hours. However his most notable feat and the one for which he is best remembered took place between 1 June and 12 July 1809 at Newmarket, during which he walked 1000 miles in a 1000 hours, to win a wager of 1000 guineas. So what of the Hailsham connection? On 3 February 1804 Robert was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 23rd Regiment of Foot, The Royal Welch Fusiliers. Due to threat of invasion by Napoleon, troops were stationed along the South coast. In May, Robert was sent with his regiment to Langley Camp, Eastbourne where the soldiers were engaged, day and night in digging an enormously long ditch, ten feet deep, to stop the progress of the enemy’s artillery when they landed.

Robert Barclay, aged 19

They were still waiting for the invasion in the autumn! The soldiers therefore had a considerable amount of time on their hands which Robert used to his advantage. Whenever he was off duty he covered countless miles along the Downs and life became one long training session. Robert was always fussy about his accommodation so in October 1804 following a suggestion by James Gearing, his barrack-sergeant, he moved into new lodgings namely the front sitting room of Gearing’s mother’s drug shop in Hailsham. It was an old family business in which the knowledge of drugs salves and ointments had passed down by word of mouth from earlier generations. In Hailsham Robert was remembered as a good tenant and a churchgoer, with a manly presence and a gentlemanly demeanour. Whilst living in Hailsham he was promoted to First Lieutenant. Living nearby, also in Hailsham, were Fletcher Reid, a close friend and associate from Scotland, and Bill Warr another friend and former prize-fighter. In October 1805 Robert assisted Fletcher Reid in organising a fight in Hailsham between Hen(ry)

A vast crowd came to Hailsham to witness the fight including George ‘Beau’ Brummell, and William, Duke of Clarence, one of the Prince of Wales‘s younger brothers who later became King William IV who watched the fight on horseback.

There was a second boxing match at Hailsham that day between Tom Cribb and Bill Richmond, or The Black Terror as he was known, a black boxer and former slave born in New York in 1763. Cribb, another fighter from Bristol, eventually beat Richmond. Bill Richmond was brought to England as a young man by Lord Percy, the Duke of Northumberland, an enlightened man who encouraged him to set up in business first as a cabinet-maker and then as a prize boxer. Other events took place in Sussex, notably at Brighton racecourse. These included Abraham Wood who accepted a wager to run 20 miles in 2¼ hours, and won by ten minutes. A few days later he accepted a wager to run 440 yards in a minute. He won that too! In addition to walking, Captain Barclay was active in the financial backing and training of bare-knuckle fighters. The most celebrated fighters that he trained were Tom Molineaux and Tom Cribb, (Champion of England). The Sussex connection continued when in 1807, what was in effect a training camp, was set up by Captain Barclay in East Dean where he supervised the training of John Gully for his attempt to win the Championship of the Prize Ring. This fight was the most important wager of Captain Barclay’s life. The fight was won by Gully who later became an MP. As the years passed Captain Barclay continued to live a varied and colourful

young servant girl half his age whom he eventually and very reluctantly married. Likewise he fathered another child with Ann Angus a women young enough to be his daughter. He made strenuous attempts to prove his right to take the titles of Earldoms Airth, Menteith and Strathearn. This was an expensive venture which virtually bankrupted him and was ultimately unsuccessful. At the end of April 1854 Captain Barclay was out in a field trying to break a pony when it kicked him in the head. Initially it appeared he had suffered no ill effects. However on 1 May he was suddenly taken ill, and whilst a doctor was sent for he was too late and Captain Barclay died at 9.15 am on 1 May 1854.

FIRST TIME BUYER CRAIG PARKINSON CERT CII (MP & ER) Mortgage & Protection Consultant

You don’t need me to tell you how complicated the whole process of buying a house can be, or what a major commitment buying your first home is. I am here to help make the whole process a little easier for you and your family. The reality is, your ability to buy is based on your ability to repay what you borrow. Your first steps are to make yourself as financially attractive as you can do to lenders. The more lenders that you appeal to, the more likely you are to get the best deals. Your credit score You’re going to need a good credit score to get the best deals available. This is based on all sorts of criteria, but most importantly, how you handle money. Now this may sound counterintuitive, but proving you are a regular saver does not help when you are applying for a mortgage. Lenders have computerised credit scoring systems to review your application. Make it easy for them by using your credit card and settling the balance every month. It shows you can handle your debt, and everything is under control your end. Start this now, even if you’re not ready to start looking or buying. Your affordability Once you’re ready to start looking, be absolutely sure what you can afford and not just what you think you can afford. How lenders assess your affordability varies across each provider and what you can borrow could be less than what you have in mind.

Your deposit Generally, you are going to need at least 5% to 20% of the cost of the home as a deposit. For a home of £150,000, you’ll need to save at least £7,500 for the deposit. Larger deposits will qualify you for a wider range of mortgage products. How long it will take you to save your deposit depends on how much you can afford to set aside each month. Take our word for it, regular saving is more effective than relying on irregular one-off sums. Your Help To Buy ISA Saving your deposit through a Help To Buy ISA has both its good and bad points. Let’s look at the advantages first, like, it’s free cash from the government. The Government adds 25% to your savings, up to a maximum of £3,000. So, where’s the catch? Your savings are capped at £200 a month, plus a maximum £1,200 initial deposit. That means it will take over four years to reach a £12,000 that unlocks the maximum £3,000 of government contribution. If you need a sizeable deposit before that, you will need to save elsewhere too. If you are a parent or grandparent that would like to know how you can help your children, or, a first time buyer that needs help to get onto the property ladder, please get in touch with me today.

Lenders will normally ask for your bank statements to review, they will find anything that you should have made them aware of. Your basic employed salary is included in your allowable income, but how much overtime / bonuses / commission / allowances they will consider varies by lender and they’ll ask for previous payslips to support your application. They will assess your income, outgoings, how long you wish for the mortgage term to be over and your deposit before they make a decision.

WINE & DINE - SUMMER

Wines of the Sussex Weald fruits of their labours in the form of their first vintage, 2017, an excellent pair of Bacchus and Pinot Gris. Our selection of local sparklers changes, but we always ensure the presence of one or more of Peter Hall’s - the elder statesman of our local winemakers - Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay/Pinot Noir cuvées on our shelves. Another key local fizz is from Blackboys, where Tickerage Vineyard makes a cider and a range of white sparklers - but the highlight for me is their Pinot-dominated sparkling blush. Since Chris and David of Hidden Spring Vineyard in Horam first came to Cuculo to tell us of their new oenological adventure, we have enjoyed three vintages of their superb local wine. This year heralds a 2018 selection of Bacchus, Bacchus Réserve and Pinot Gris. In more recent years we have been delighted to welcome Kristina and Anne-Marie from Off the Line Vineyard in Hellingly. Their rosés

have quickly become a staple of our range, popular - especially in summer time and at Christmas - because our customers recognise quality. Funky, creative labelling reflects the originality of the product. The highlight is the delicate, Provençale-style “Hip Rosé”, 100% Pinot Noir, for which 2018 was such a good year that the 10.5% abv is entirely natural with no chaptalisation (added sugars to boost the alcohol). The others are “Dancing Dog” and “Dog” - each a blend of Rondo, Bacchus and Pinot Noir.

At Cuculo all of our wines are available by the glass (minimum two glasses for sparklers and fine wines) and can be enjoyed with a choice of cheeses and cured meats from our extensive selection. We also offer case - mixed and unmixed - discounts.

We lived close by when Paul and Al Pippard planted their first vines at Beacon Down vineyard in Cross-inHand, and although in the intervening three years we moved to the other side of town, we enjoyed the (literal)

SUMMER

Summer Health -Tips to stay well this summer Summer is well and truly on its way and it’s at this time that we begin to turn our head to summer health. There are many areas to consider in regards to optimising health during the summer. • • • •

Summer Sun Skin Health – Pros and Cons of Sun Cream Summer Barbeques – The Hidden Dangers Ticks How to prevent your summer tipple not tipping you off balance

Summer Skin Health We live in the Northern Hemisphere, which means 7-8 months a year; the amount of sun we receive is inadequate to support our health optimally. During the winter we can become Vitamin D deficient which can lead to issues with not just our bone density, but can also cause our emotions and moods to be altered by suffering from Seasonally Affective Disorder (SAD). We simply need sufficient UV rays in order to stay healthy and happy. When summer finally appears we have the chance to expose ourselves to a well-needed dose of Vitamin D. However we need to stay cautious regarding this. The sun produces 2 main UV rays – UVA and UVB. UVA rays are less intense but are more prolonged throughout the year and can cause pigmentation change. This ray ages our skin over long periods of exposure. UVB is when the sun is closer to our part of the world. It is more prevalent during the spring

32 w w w . t h e w e a l d e n e y e . c o . u k

and summer months and can cause burning. UVA for aging and UVB for burning. We need to protect ourselves from both rays. However it’s worth remembering that we also benefit from absorbing a moderate degree of the rays in order to produce Vitamin D. What’s the solution then? Use a Factor 50 suncream that protects against UVA and UVB throughout the summer on both the face and body. Use this protection on the face all year round to prevent age spots and UVA damage. Try to expose your arms to 10-15 minutes of sun before slapping the protection on and increase foods that contain Vitamin D throughout the year. Foods that harness the sun for growth contain the most, Fruits and Vegetables as well as Oily Fish and Eggs. ‘Better You’ do a fantastic mint flavoured Vitamin D3 spray which you can use daily throughout the year and if you suffer from SAD and you could invest in a SAD light that you can use during the dark, winter months to boost mood.

Summer BBQ’s When it finally stops raining it is absolutely joyous to cook outside. Be aware of some health concerns that are worth avoiding. 1. Keeping raw meat next to uncooked foods. Chicken kebabs touching a summer Pavlova for example is highly dangerous. A real health hazard. Try to keep all raw food well wrapped or covered and away from fresh foods. Also when cooking raw meat, try to be systematic in laying raw meat away

Annie Gill

from cooked meat to again avoid cross contamination. I recommend a clockwise rotation system. 2. Burning & Undercooking Meat. It is imperative you allow your BBQ to come to the right cooking temperature. Less haste. Allow the wood to heat up and then dampen down to hot but less angry cinder. This will allow you to thoroughly cook the meat from the inside without creating harmful carbon burns on the outside.

Ticks South Downs National Park is one of the country’s top 10 hot spots for Lyme disease caused by ticks. Early signs of potential Lyme disease in humans include flu-like symptoms and a bull’s eye rash. To avoid exposure, ensure you wear long socks, particularly when walking in long grass and check for ticks after walking in the countryside.
