Tanzania North During their Short Rains (November – usually) Park with its perfect caldera offering a sanctuary to its wildlife on the floor of the volcano and beautiful rain forests throughout the Park.

Day 2 to 5 - Tarangire Photo by Peter Ellis This must be one of the best wildlife destinations in Africa with the wildebeest/zebra migration in the Serengeti being one of the star attractions. Choosing a time which will give you the chance of all this amazing region has to offer without having to share it with a crowd of other people can only enhance the experience. The trick here is selecting a camp site that is remote, wild, still very Africa but with all the amenities that you need with excellent service and guiding as standard. If you are willing to take the chance of going during the short rainy season, then you will improve the quality of your safari. Yes, you may experience an African thunderstorm (dramatic, noisy and spectacular but usually over within the hour) but the experience has benefits. Seeing the plains and trees turn green, then having all the wild flowers coming out and seeing the baby topis and impala add something in the way of a big extra. We also know a company that will

4 www.thewealdeneye.co.uk

ensure that your campsite is exclusive, in a special location and far from the other travellers you may have seen during the day. Their aim is to give you such a good experience that you will start planning your return before too long. They will look after you from the moment you land to the time you depart – in style. The following is a suggested itinerary for your safari in the short rainy season to Northern Tanzania:

Day 1 -Arusha/Kilimanjaro Airport Currently there are no direct flights to Kilimanjaro Airport but there are plenty of choices for indirect flights at very reasonable prices. Depending on the time that you arrive you could head for your first camp or stay overnight in or around Arusha. There is plenty of choice for the overnight from 5 star luxury to staying on a coffee farm. Consider adding a day here to explore the little visited but a jewel of a National Park – Mount Meru National

After breakfast you head towards Tarangire National Park along good tarmac roads before turning off to a private concession that exists along the border of the Park. Tarangire is famed for its giant Baobab trees and big herds of buffalo and elephant. You camp is located along the dry riverbed and is just 10 tents in all. The waterhole right in front of the pool and dining room is very popular with the local wildlife, particularly elephant. You could be sipping your G&T by the pool watching the elis jostling for their drink. We suggest 2 or 3 nights here to explore the Park and see the wildlife that lives in the Concession. The swamp in the Tarangire is a mecca for birders and huge herds of buffalo and elephant. Being on a Concession allows you to take a walking safari of

Day 6 to 9 - Central Serengeti

If you have time you could add in a couple of nights staying in a camp or lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and having a full day down in the crater. This is a world of its own and has all the big 5 here to see as well as flamingo on the lake at certain times of the year. You have the option of driving to the Serengeti perhaps stopping at the Olduvai Gorge to learn about our

Photo by Peter Ellis leave the airstrip and if the migration is in the central area (very likely at this time of year) you will see huge herds of zebra, wildebeest and the other plains animals. Along with them come the predators – lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard mand all the attendant birds such as vultures and scavengers like jackal. Where

Photo by Peter Ellis very earliest ancestors or catching a 45 minutes flight to Seronera Airstrip where your next guide will pick you up. You are in the centre of this huge National Park (30,000 square kilometres or a quarter of the size of England) and well placed to follow the ever going migration of wildebeest and zebra. This migration is one of the largest in the world and is governed by the rain fall and water availability in the Serengeti and Masai Mara in Kenya. Your game drive starts immediately you

we recommend staying is in a hidden valley with no passing traffic, apart from the animals, and peace and quiet for the perfect sundowner, delightful meals and sleep only interrupted by lion roars and hyena calls. It really is worth planning this part of your trip carefully. Having passing vehicles in front of your campsite takes a lot away from the experience. While here plan a balloon trip at dawn for an experience of a lifetime. The captains of the balloons are very experienced and will give you

varying height chances to photo the plains, kopjes and animals. Finish with a champagne breakfast under an acacia tree on the plains that you have just flown over. Exhilarating and unforgettable.

Day 9 to 12 - North Serengeti Have a game drive to the northern part of the Park and notice the change between savanna and lightly forested hills. Here the Grumeti and Mara rivers dissect the Serengeti here and at the right time of the year you could witness the famous river crossings by the migrating herds. The rivers are full of hippo and crocs and you can see why the animals hesitate to be the first to jump into the murky water. This region has everything to offer with leopard often seen resting on the rocks, waiting for darkness. Your camp site here is tucked into the rocks of one of the kopjes that dot the plains here and give stunning views across the plains and acacia forests. The service, meals and ambiance are second to none. A great place to end your safari.

Day 13 This morning you will fly back to Arusha and make your connection for the return flight home. We are a call or an email away from you visiting one of Africa’s iconic destinations

A W ORD FR OM WESTMIN STER

A new year with a new Parliament Nus Ghani, MP

a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, I understand the scale of challenges that we will face in keeping our citizens safe. By increasing sentences for dangerous criminals, protecting our police officers, and legislating for public bodies a duty to work together to prevent serious violence, I hope we will make this country a much safer place.

I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and a new year and is as excited as I am in welcoming 2020. Firstly, I must thank all of you who have put their faith in me, to continue to be your voice in Westminster. Of course, it takes team work and I must thank Wealden members and volunteers for all their support and comfort over the election period. Having had 3 elections in 5 years, I look forward to 5 years of stability. We now march into what our children and grandchildren will in the future, refer to as the “Twenty-twenties”. It will be our generation’s responsibility to make sure that the “Twenty-twenties” will be looked as an era of renewal. After the last few years of turbulence and uncertainty I am pleased that we can as a nation now come together to mend divisions, which reminds me of getting everyone together for Christmas. With an increased mandate the Government will initially focus on

our departure from the European Union and then crack on with a fresh focus on issues such as the NHS, our Police, supporting our entrepreneurs, with a bold vision for our role on the international stage and protecting the environment. I was encouraged by the Queen’s Speech last December, which highlights the Government’s priorities, in its focus in improving the NHS and Social care. Indeed, there will be a legally-binding increase in investment in NHS Funding to reach £34 billion in cash terms by 2023-2024. On top of the £500 million annual spend on social care we will also be working with all parties to produce a longterm social care reform that will not be beholden to changes in Government. Social care has been an issue I have campaigned on since I worked at AgeUK and whilst as an MP as cases present themselves across Wealden. I would also wish for the “Twentytwenties” to be heralded as an era of safety and security. Having served as

Building on the legally binding pledge to reach carbon-neutrality (net zero) by 2050, the Government has also pledged further measures to tackle plastic waste and improving water quality. As a Transport Minister I will, of course, play my part in devising policies that will mitigate transport and infrastructure’s impact on the environment and as Maritime Minister I will continue to direct our work for shipping, ports and ocean health. With our track record and our ambitious measures, we will be a guiding example for other nations to aspire to, especially during the COP26 Climate Change Summit to be held in Glasgow later this year. There is so much to look forward to in the new year, but I am aware that action speaks louder than words, and hopefully, the “Twenty -twenties” will be a decade of action. Locally, I look forward to working with you and helping more of my constituents through my regular surgeries (dates can be found on my website nusghani. org.uk) and by making representations on their behalf. Here’s to 2020.

Thoughts for the New Year

I really sat down to write about this evening is cheese. Not just any cheese: mighty Vacherin Mont d’Or, the soft, gooey delight hailing from the Swiss and French Jura. It is only available in the winter months as it is the milk of cows already down from the high pastures (in the summer - when the animals’ diet consists not of hay but of lush grass, flowers and herbs - we get Comte). Vacherin is wrapped in a spruce bark “belt” whose flavour infuses into the cheese. It’s a little moo-juice miracle which comes around in September and is only available until March - so get it while you can!

As you read this, the calm of New Year will be upon us: but I write on 22nd December with a pair of Cuculo elves preparing a huge pile of cheese orders for what I expect to be the busiest day of our year. We always take a moment on 25th to think of the good folk of Heathfield tucking into our fare. It gives us a most particular mix of pride and gratitude that so many should choose to entrust us with such an important moment for them, and that our team’s hard work should be so meaningful to so many. The personal sentiments our work gives us are echoed through the year as our customers’ important dates

10 w w w . t h e w e a l d e n e y e . c o . u k

go by: Valentines, Easter, birthdays, barbeques… Our customers can see the pride we take, and the importance of their happiness: and so, in turn, do they come to Cuculo. There’s an important, conversation to be had here, about out the role of independent retailers in our country, and the habits we as consumers need to make in order to support them. But after all that, what

wider,

The team at Cuculo send our thanks to our customers for their support in 2019 - and best wishes for a peaceful and happy 2020.

MUSIC FILE 40

BACK IN TIME

As Cliff Richard left the top of the 1988 Christmas singles chart with “Mistletoe And Wine”, which was originally written for the musical Scraps – and here’s me thinking it was a nice new song! - it was, his ninety-ninth single and twelfth chart topper. So, who replaced him? Well, Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan of course with the cheesy “Especially For You”. They had both left the Australian soap Neighbours to pursue recording careers, when they recorded this Stock, Aitken and Waterman song. Recorded as a track on Jason’s debut album “Ten Good Reasons”, somebody had a light bulb moment to lift it for single release. It stayed at the top for three weeks, leaving Erasure’s “Crackers International” four track EP; Angry Anderson’s “Suddenly” and “Good Life” from Inner City gagging to replace it. Let’s talk about Mr Anderson’s power ballad because its success was attributed to it being the musical backdrop to Scott Robinson’s (Jason) marriage to Charlene Mitchell (Kylie) in that soap. While the American electronic music group Inner City’s single success was probably down to vocalist Paris Grey, whose soulful deliveries added the magic ingredient to the group’s releases. This musical kaleidoscope top ten included Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance”, which actually had nothing to do with animals. Rather, the word ‘buffalo’ referred to a group of models, musicians, makeup artists, among others, formed by fashion stylist Ray Petri. Her single also referenced Malcolm McLaren’s “Buffalo Girls” which she sampled. Totally lost on me I’m afraid! Ah, familiar ground now with the Four Tops’ “Loco In Acapulco”. Written and produced by Phil Collins and Lamont Dozier, the song was, of course, from the film Buster in which the before mentioned Mr Collins plays the lead role. Finally, British singer Kim Wilde, daughter of

JAN/FEB

1989 Marty, with “Four Letter Word” from her “Close” album which was released to coincide with the European tour by Michael Jackson, where she was his opening act. Into February now and a re-make (of sorts) of “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”, first recorded by David and Jonathan, with Gene Pitney’s take in 1967, being the most successful version. So, now in 1989, ex- Soft Cell’s Marc Almond resurrected the song for his “The Stars We Are” album. By all accounts, Gene heard the solo version and offered to rerecord it with him as a duet. Marc’s solo take was then relegated to the single’s flipside! Sitting underneath this Parlophone label release, were Mike & The Mechanics with “The Living Years”, a British supergroup formed during 1985 as a side project of Mike Rutherford, one of the founding members of Genesis, featuring, um, Phil Collins on drums. The single, addressing a son’s regret over an unresolved conflict with his deceased father, was the second lifted from their “The Living Years” album. And below this was Roy Orbison’s “You Got It”, from “Mystery Girl”, his twentysecond studio album. Apparently, he performed it only once at Antwerp’s Diamond Awards Festival, seventeen days prior to his death, and before its single release. Others in this month’s top ten represented a varied choice, like, UK band Roachford’s first hit single “Cuddly Toy”, and ex-Frankie Goes To Hollywood

lead singer, Holly Johnson’s “Love Train. Not The O’Jays dance hit, but rather a self penned track, featuring a guitar solo from Queen’s Brian May. Patiently waiting under these were the Birmingham-born, Fine Young Cannibals (formed when The Beat was dissolved) called “She Drives Me Crazy”. And one single I actually do remember (!) is “Wait” beautifully delivered by The Blow Monkeys’ Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle, often dubbed the pioneer of House Music in Britain. As an aside, and in case it’s of interest, Kym was raised in Gary, Indiana, on the same street as Michael Jackson’s family. What more can I say! HISTORIC HAILSHAM

Rev Francis Clyde Harvey

Rev Francis Clyde Harvey

Francis Clyde Harvey was born in Winster, Derbyshire on July 29, 1844 where his father, Rev George Gayton Harvey was the vicar. He moved to Hailsham in 1847 when his father became the town’s vicar. He attended Marlborough Public School where he was an active sportsman. Following university he was ordained at Lincoln in 1868 after which he served as curate in Radford, Nottinghamshire. Following his father’s retirement in 1872, Clyde Harvey too became vicar of Hailsham a position he held for the next fifty years. On 9 June 1880 he married Ellen Frances Heinemann, eldest daughter of Emil Heinemann and Emily Matilda (nee Dabney). Emil Heinemann, a wealthy banker, was German born on 2 March, 1832. Emily Dabney was born on Rhode Island, America on 9 January 1833, the daughter of Charles Henry Dabney and Ellen Maria Jones. Emil Heinemann lived in New York and Rhode Island from 1854 to 1874 and later became a banker in London. The family lived in Eastbourne from 1874 to 1881 where they rented Ratton House.

20 w w w . t h e w e a l d e n e y e . c o . u k

Mr & Mrs Harvey went on to have 10 children including two sets of twins. As vicar, Mr Harvey became a prominent member of the community. He chaired countless organisations/committees which included serving as Chairman of the Parish Council from 1898 -1921. He was active in Hailsham Board School (now HCC), where he was the first chairman of the Board. He was even more active in the life of the village school in the High Street (now Prezzo). The school then called Hailsham National Infants School and later Hailsham Infants Church of England School and was largely run by the church. As such the Mr Harvey was a regular visitor where he took classes in religious education. He and other teachers were obviously very successful as reflected in an inspection report entitled, “Report of religious instruction – Infants Department,” dated December 1906. The Diocesan Inspector wrote, “I was much pleased with the work of the school which was throughout most satisfactory. The children answered well and readily and it was evident that they were taught with great care and

Mrs Ellen Harvey

kindness so that they take a great interest in their work.” The report concludes by congratulating the head mistress and her staff on, “the good work they are doing.” In 1893, with some hesitation and reservation, Mr Harvey founded the Parish magazine. It flourished and has proved a valuable source of information particularly to those interested in studying the history of the town. In an addition to covering church matters the magazine reported on a variety of other topics from the sixpenny tax on beer, to the need for a waiting room at Hailsham station. Mr Harvey was also something of an amateur meteorologist and commented regularly on the weather in the magazine including the amount of rainfall each month. Mr Harvey was vicar during the period when Hailsham was transitioning from a village to a town. One of his achievements was to oversee a considerable programme of improvements and alterations to the building. However the writers of The Stringtown comment that in many instances these “improvements” were “typical of late Victorian destruction.” Richard Marks made a similar point in (Sussex Churches and Chapels, 1989) when he referred to “Sussex churches which suffered from the heavy hand of the Victorian restorers.” Either way the changes in Hailsham were extensive and doubtless were a considerable drain on his time in addition to his regular responsibilities for services, vestry meetings, Band of Hope, Sunday school, Madrigal Society and Young Crusaders. Mr Harvey continued his sporting interests during his years as Vicar. He was an active supporter of the town’s cricket and football teams and frequently

commented on their fortunes in the parish magazine. He was a competent boxer, something he used to good effect with Gully, a local chimney sweep who Mr Harvey once challenged in regard to his non-attendance at church. Gully’s response was that they should have fight and if he won then Mr Harvey would have to buy him a pint. If he lost, he would come to church. He lost and duly attended church on a regular basis after that! Clyde Harvey was an outspoken supporter of the (First World) war effort and he used his monthly Parish Letter to express an unerring patriotism and the rightness of the Allied cause, speaking out forthrightly to any who failed to “do their bit.” However these were not idle words for he and his wife lost two sons during the war. The first was Captain Richard Harvey, aged 24 who died from wounds received between 25 & 27 September 1915. He was Adjutant the 9th Battalion, The Black Watch. Prior to the commencement of the war he was working in the Colonial Civil Service which followed his time as a student at

Exeter College, Oxford. At the time of his death Richard Harvey had been at the front for just three months. Another son, Rollo Harvey, a Lieutenant (Acting Captain), in The Royal Sussex Regiment was killed in action on 9 September 1916. Rollo Harvey was training for the Anglican ministry and gave up his studies soon after the war started to join the Royal Sussex. Rollo Harvey’s twin brother, Clyde was a private in the in the RAMC and was in hospital at the time of his brother’s death having been wounded previously. Mr & Mrs Harvey’s two other sons, both served in the army during the war. Capt. Charles Harvey in Egypt and Lt. G Burke Harvey in India. In addition to the army service of the five brothers, their daughter Marjorie Harvey served as a nurse with the Red Cross in Cairo. Another daughter Emily died in Hailsham in February 1914 whilst training to be a nurse. Notwithstanding the tragic deaths of his two sons from the outset Mr Harvey

Rev Francis Clyde Harvey

continued his support of the war in the Magazine throughout the war years. In the parish letter for August 1914 he referred to the war and saw it as an answer to prayer. Those prayers had been for peace in Ireland and the prevention of a civil war. The outbreak of war in France and Belgium meant that differences were set aside as opposing views combined against a common enemy. “Today there is only one subject talked about from Palace to cottage, the War. England’s destiny.” Clyde Harvey died at Hailsham Vicarage on 18 September 1922, aged 78. Warm tributes were paid to him in the following Parish magazine. Phrases such as “we loved him” and “we mourn his loss and Hailsham is poorer, infinitely poorer for his passing.” were typical of the responses from the local community..

HOOK & SON

Wet Winter continues to cause problems on the Farm!

Ivy 70 is our friendliest cow, even though her nickname is ‘Trouble.’ After being milked, on her way out she’ll push the dairy door open, go into the dairy and drink the milk that is put by in buckets for the calves!

Since the third week in September, we’ve had over half our annual rainfall. Our fields on the Pevensey Levels are flooded more than usual at this time of year. I’m sure at some point in 2020 we’ll be needing a bit of rain! It will be a long winter, as we had to bring our cows in for the winter three weeks earlier than normal, in mid-October instead of the first week in November.

Hoping to Turn the Business around in 2020 Although the last couple of years have been very tough, we are looking forward to 2020. With the help of an investor in our business, we will be producing some new products during the next year, as well as diversifying into some new ventures such as submitting plans for some glamping units on some of our fields on the stunning Pevensey Levels. The glamping units may well be some

Shepherds Huts. They will be completely ‘off grid’ so completely away from any sign of civilisation for a real ‘get away from all the rush and tear of modern life’ holiday. Hopefully we will have a website up soon. There will be romantic glamping units for couples, fun family glamping units, as well as one for birdwatchers as the Pevensey Levels plays host to all sorts of birds, from waders to warblers, winter visitors and summer visitors! We’ve even been honoured to have been visited by a bittern when the weather is very cold in late winter.

is great, so whatever dairy products we process our milk into, whether it’s cream, butter, cheese, those products should be wonderful too! We are switching more to packaging our milk and other dairy products in glass, and less in plastic.

New Dairy Products and Packaging We are buying some cheese making equipment, with the aim to start producing our own cheese next spring. Ideas are more than welcome if there is a cheese you would like to see us make. Our organic raw grass-fed milk

The Bittern is sometimes found on the Pevensey Levels in winter. It’s loud booming call is unmistakable.

We have designed new milk bottles with new stories of our cows which will be in circulation very soon. We are expecting the lovely new glass milk bottles in midJanuary, so do look out for them, they will be completely unique and lovely!

Turn Out Day 2020 Spring will soon be here, at least we hope so! We are already planning our annual Turn Out Day. Last year we had 700 visitors who came to the farm to see the cows being ‘turned out’ onto a lovely grassy field after having been kept indoors for the winter. There will also be a Farmers Market, refreshments, Bar-B-Q, and tractor and trailer rides. This year, Turn Out Day will be on the Easter Bank Holiday, 13th April 2020. Tickets are already on sale at our online farm shop at: https://www. hookandsonfarmshop .co.uk/ category-s/1826.htm

Mad Marsh Run Tickets are also on sale for our next Mad Marsh Run following the success of our first ever event last year, with just under 200 runners taking part. This year, as well as the 10km course, there will also be a 5 km course, as well as a spectators’ ‘Hop on Hop off’ tractor and trailer ride around the course. All in all, a great day out for runners, families, and groups, whether taking part or as a spectator.

Refreshments and Bar-B-Q will also be available. The Mad Marsh Run will take place at Longleys Farm, Harebeating Lane, Hailsham, on the 26th April 2020. For more information, please visit the website www.madmarshrun.com We will be looking for volunteers to help marshall the event. Marshalls will have free entry, and cup of tea and bacon butty on arrival, as well as a free Hook and Son burger afterwards! Please let us know if you would like to help on the day.

ROLL ON SPRING!

Jill is half Holstein Friesian, and half Norwegian Red. Although slightly smaller she is a physically stronger type of cow which is more suited to producing grass fed milk on the Pevensey Levels.

Top Tips to help make 2020 your healthiest year yet! As we start our new year we probably have in our mind many good intentions that we probably start but then very quickly fall by the way side because they may be unachievable or too extreme to maintain. At HealthSmart Nutrition I try to instill in clients that long term, sustainable change happens over a period of time and comes in the form of adopting new habits that are achievable and can slot into your every day life, but can make a huge impact on your health status. Here are my 4 Top Tips that you can adopt every day and are achievable but offer long-term health improvement. •Drink more water •Ditch the sugar •Move more •Get to bed

THE BENEFITS OF DRINKING MORE WATER •Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue •Promotes Weight Loss •Flushes Out Toxins •Improves Skin Complexion •Maintains Regularity •Boosts Immune System •Natural Headache Remedy •Prevents Cramps & Sprains Pretty impressive, and it’s FREE! Aim for approx. 2 litres per day. Keep a bottle with you all the time. Try to drink throughout the day but ease off after 7.30 pm to avoid needing the bathroom during the night.

DITCH THE SUGAR Excess sugar is linked to increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity and even Cancer. That’s why now more than ever it is important for our health that we reduce or remove ‘simple refined sugars’ from our daily diet. There are many dietary adjustments that can help to make the reduction of simple sugars more achievable: •Eat regularly to avoid blood sugar dips that will bring on cravings and don’t skip meals. •Choose whole foods that will keep you fuller for longer and help slow down the release of natural sugars. •Have a breakfast of protein, fat and phytonutrients (berries or spinach) to start your day off balanced.

Annie Gill

•Move your body. This will help reduce tension, boost your energy and decrease your need for a sugar lift.

TIME FOR BED Although we may not like to admit it, many of the sleep problems we experience are the result of bad habits and behaviours. We stay up late or sleep in late. We eat foods that disagree with us or enjoy a drink late at night, oblivious to their disruptive impact on our sleep rhythms. Over time, we teach our body not to sleep and for relief we often turn to sleeping pills, which mask rather than solve the problem, and can lead to addiction. Ultimately for real success, with insomnia as with any chronic problem, one must look for the underlying imbalances and root causes and address those.

•Try incorporate protein and/or fat with each meal. This slows down the release of sugars from the food.

•Create a routine and stick to it

•Adding spices such as Coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves or cardamom will naturally sweeten your foods and reduce cravings.

•Take the time to slowly shift into sleep – Create a sleep hygiene routine

•Take a good-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D3. Nutrient deficiencies can make cravings worse and the fewer nutrient deficiencies, the fewer cravings. Certain nutrients seem to improve blood sugar control including chromium, vitamin B3 and magnesium.

•Nap for no more than 30 minutes

•At night, keep the room as dark as possible •If you have to eat, have a highprotein snack •Learn relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing •Get the TV/devices out of the bedroom and stop looking at your electronic devise before bed
