Welcome to issue 33 of The Wealden Eye… Hello and thank you for picking up a copy of this spring issue!

This feels like such a positive time of year when we have so much to look forward to in the coming months. The evenings have drawn out, the temperature has risen (slightly!) and even the birds feel like having a bit of a sing song in the morning! It really has started event season now so here are a few that are in the local area: Indoor Food and Craft Market at the Boship (Lions) Hotel. 10am to 3pm - Sunday 17th April & Sunday 15th May. They have a great selection of local produce and gifts. They help raise funds for local charities too.

The Society of Eastbourne Artists is holding a three day art exhibition Saturday 30th April to Monday 2nd of May at the Lansdowne Hotel, BN21 4EE. Opening times 10 to 6, Monday 10 to 4.Monies raised will go to Mencap & Eastbourne Blind Society.

Sussex Wildlife Trust for the Eastbourne/ Wealden Area has two dates for your diary: Thursday 21st April and Thursday 19th May Both events start at 7.30pm at the Main Hall of the Victoria Baptist Church, Eldon Road, Eastbourne, BN21 1UE If you require further information on these events then go to our website or facebook page and see our event listings.

The Premier Local Social Club New Members Always Welcome!

Hailsham Cricket Club LOOKING FORWARD ndoor training is now Iforward finished and we are looking to resuming outdoor training sessions at The Recreation Ground on Western Road.

Training The indoor sessions were a massive success for the club, the juniors have 18 new members across age groups 5-16. We also welcomed 5 new coaches and assistants to the club, their input was integral in allowing us to expand and offer a high standard of in-depth coaching.

Juniors Our junior training sessions switch back to the usual Wednesday night slot and will run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, starting on Wednesday April 6.

The club is eagerly awaiting the start of the 2016 season and we are very optimistic as all four Saturday teams are in a strong position.

Seniors The seniors also had an intake of players with 9 new members coming along to training and

signing up to the club. Our attention now turns to outdoor training with the seniors training on Tuesday nights between 6pm and 8pm and Wednesday nights from 7.30pm until the light fades, with the first session will on April 5.

New members New members are always welcome at Hailsham and we are always looking for new additions in a number of different roles; players, officials, tea ladies and groundsman.

We are extremely excited by the new pavilion that is close to completion at Roebuck Park. This has been a long term project and will be the finishing touch to a stunning new cricket ground.

The club is eagerly awaiting the start of the 2016 season and we are very optimistic as all four Saturday teams are in a strong position. The club is committed to continued progress and to build on a number of successful years both on and off the pitch. The juniors are also looking to take the next step after a successful 2015 season and hopefully they shall carry that form into the senior matches they play.

island – from tropical beach to lush mountain peaks with views for miles.

Sri Lanka remains a great value destination with easy access, and it is about 11 hours flying time away. There is a diverse range of interesting, beautifully located properties on offer that will ensure a memorable holiday. Your bouquet can be left in its aqua pack for up to 48hrs. After this the water will need to be changed, so snip the base of the water bag over the sink to release the water. Remove the lower packaging. Also the top packaging if desired.

Fill a vase with tepid water, add the flower food following the instructions on the packet, cut approx 5cm from the end of the stems, for best results cut stems at an angle. Stand in the vase.

fter a slow start to the season, Hellingly Saxons have gone from strength to strength with several new players coming to the club and old players returning from injury.

The Saxons have had some hard fought wins at home against Crowborough, Heathfield and Seaford, as well as several notable near misses. With the end of the season drawing near, The Saxons need to continue their good run of form to maintain a good league position. he New Year has brought with it a change in fortunes for the first XV squad who have now strung together 6 wins on the trot, the only blot on their copy book being a narrow loss to Seaford in their last outing.

This run has seen them complete the double over sides such as Crawley, Brighton II, Crowborough II and Chichester III. A steely resolve has seen the squad record some very narrow victories. It is these tight games in which the side has failed to heave themselves over the finish line in the last couple of seasons. The squad is now starting to reap the rewards of a new playing style and a lot of hard work, so a place in the top four is now the target for the end of the season.

A Word From Westminster

REPRESENTING YOU

I

’m privileged, as an MP, to be able to vote on pieces of legislation in the House of Commons, and those of us lucky enough to sit on the green benches are granted that right by your votes at an election.

For some issues though, it’s right and proper that the whole country gets to vote, not just the 650 MPs in Parliament. The referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union, promised and delivered by the Conservative Government and happening in under four months, is your chance to offer your view on this

crucial issue.

Every registered individual can vote, and everyone’s vote is equal, whether they have been elected to Parliament or not. We are all our own representatives in this vote, which is democracy in action at its very best, and I hope you will engage with the arguments put forward on both sides when making up your mind.

On other things I do have the honour of representing you, and I’m keen to make sure that I’m doing that in the best way possible. So this month I launched a survey for

pub landlords in Wealden. Pubs are a social hub at the heart of a community, as well as a big part of the local economy, and I want to ensure that rural pubs in our villages and towns are represented in Parliament the way they deserve to be.

The pub trade faces its own challenges, as most industries do, and in Wealden we have unfortunately lost a couple of our pubs during recent years. I’m hopeful that Wealden’s landlords will respond with lots of suggestions for how I can fight their corner in Parliament, so that our rural pubs are allowed to thrive long into the future.

he Department of Health has announced that it will be reducing funding for pharmacies by 12%, starting this October. The Minister responsible for pharmacy, Alistair Burt MP, said that he expects to see up to 3000 local community pharmacies close.

All of us within the profession are shocked by this announcement. At a time when NHS England are encouraging patients to speak to their pharmacists, before troubling Accident and Emergency departments or their GP, about minor ailments, it is difficult to understand why the Government would allow so many to close.

Local pharmacies are an accessible source of advice, without appointment, from a qualified

We provide many services free of charge, including; prescription ordering, collection and free delivery, and helping customers and patients who may have run out of medication, need advice, want to know how to access a service or who just need reassurance.

THE WELL BEING CENTRE

L

ast year on March 23rd 2015 we opened the Well Being Centre in two beautiful yurts, at Glynleigh Organic Farm, near Hilliers Garden Centre in Stone Cross.

The Well Being Centre is an environmentally friendly and holistic health centre for complementary and transformative healing work, in all its many forms, on the edge of Pevensey marshes. The centre was officially opened by Andrew Durling of Eastbourne Green Party and Friends of the Earth.

It all began with a 14ft yurt at Playgroup Music Festival in 2011! A few years later as a proud owner of the same yurt, made beautifully by the Yurtshop in Battle, I was looking for a semi permanent place to locate it, during the warmer months of the year, to practice Shiatsu, the holistic Japanese bodywork therapy, Acupressure Massage and Qigong. Fortuitously, at our next bookclub meeting, an old friend Jon Ross had been invited to join us. Jon and Becky Ross own Glynleigh Organic Farm and he said he may be able to help me out!

In exchange for a days work a month on the farm I could put up the yurt from time to time to do treatments. What a wonderful place to work, surrounded by the beauty, fresh air and natural sounds of the countryside. My clients found their treatments more deeply relaxing and restorative than usual. Jon and Becky were most interested in the work I was doing and loved the yurt. After many discussions, cups of tea and a whole range

We use solar power to generate our electricity and heating is mainly woodburners sourced with wood from the farm and our neighbours. We hold weekly classes in the big 24ft yurt of a whole variety of different yogas; Kundalini, Hot Asthanga , Dru , Animal, Bikram and Restorative Yoga as well as Qigong and Meditation. In the smaller yurt we offer a wide range of different therapies such as Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, Massage (Deep Tissue, Acupressure, No Hands) Reiki, Counselling and Wellbeing coaching. There are monthly workshops of Kundalini Yoga, Sound Baths with the amazing Soundlove, deeply relaxing and restorative Qigong and Meditation sessions as well as Shiatsu clinics where Shiatsu and Acupressure massage is available for a donation.

There is parking available, shared lifts encouraged, and a bus route passes close by. There are now also ecological compost toilets all housed in a brand new stunning green roofed building. We have our Open Day this year on Sunday, 15th May with a mixture of tasters, demonstrations, talks and delicious homemade refreshments.

Historic Hailsham

Hailsham in the mid -19th century H

ailsham is expanding fast and now has a population of over 20,000. However 165 years ago it was all very different. The 1851 census revealed that the population of the town was 1825, double the number in 1801.

Despite this Hailsham was still just a village. However during the mid-century years there were a number of developments which reflected and contributed to the growth of the town. In 1846 Hailsham National School was built and paid for with voluntary contributions plus a small grant from parliament. Hailsham’s National School like other National schools was free, having been founded by the “National Society for the education of the Poor according to the principles of the Church of England.”

Unsurprisingly these schools had a strong church influence which didn’t please some families with dissenting denominations.

Hailsham’s new school was built on a site at the end of Garfield Road with a playground at the rear in what is now part of South Road. In 1849 the railway arrived in the town. Initially it was just a shuttle service between Hailsham

& Polegate. Later, in 1880, the line was extended through to Heathfield. One outcome of this extension was that the school was demolished.

Although the ropemakers, Burfields and Greens employed many people, Hailsham was still largely an agricultural community and the fortnightly market was one of the busiest in the county. However it was not all good news. Strangers were attracted to the town and with two new beer houses there was some disruption and hard drinking. This was of concern to the townsfolk and a special meeting of the Vestry (the predecessor to the Parish Council) was held during 1846.

The meeting sent a letter to Captain Mackay, Head of the Sussex constabulary requesting that Inspector Dawes of Horsebridge be sent to Hailsham to control and quieten, “the congregating of many disorderly persons which is frequently a great annoyance to the inhabitants.” The meeting nominated Thomas White, grocer and Thomas Burfield to, “wait on Capt. Mackay should he feel

To get a clearer picture of life in Hailsham during this mid-century period I am devoting the rest of this article to an account published in the Parish Magazine in June 1893 written by Charles Underwood Jenner, who lived in Hailsham for many years and worked initially as the employee and later owner of a pharmacy, now Paydens and later purchased Breads the printers which was managed by his son Eustace Underwood Jenner In his article Mr Jenner recalled what Hailsham was like in 1846/7.

He begins by stating that Hailsham was, “pretty much as it had been for many years and there were few, if any new patches on the old material. Starting from the Market Square and passing The Crown Inn (now the Corn Exchange) we should come to the shop now occupied by Mrs Birch, and at that time in the occupation of Mr Stephen Breads, Printer. This was then almost the last house at that end of the town.” (This property still exists and is the premises occupied

by Haywards Carpets).

Jenner continued. “where Belle Vue Terrace (the area from the entrance to the Quintins along to the Salvation Army charity shop), now stands were gardens only, and abutting on to the road and horse pond with stables at the rear,

known as ‘The Carriers’ in the occupation of Mr James Hoad’s father, who until that time, nearly, had carried goods to and from London by road. Passing on, one came to one house only on that side till reaching the Grenadier Inn, then a wayside Public, well out of the town and headquarters of the travelling fraternity, such as tinkers, scissor grinders, beggars and tramps of all kinds. The next house on that side was a cottage, still standing in the rear of Wellington Terrace.” (Wellington Terrace is the row of properties from number 1 London Road).

“When the barracks were occupied by about 500 men this cottage was used as the Officer’s mess room. (This property still exists and is located in Gratten Place in Eastwell Place).

“Turning to come into the town again the first building on the opposite side of the road was a windmill which long stood on a knoll at the rear of the present Magistrates Room, (The Old Court House) and was afterwards (1869) removed to Harebeating (Lane), where it is still doing good service, and next to the Millers cottage at the rear of and now forming a portion of St Wilfrid’s.

“Starting again from the (Market) Square and passing the George Inn, that house was almost the last house on that side of the road.

‘Courtlands’ had long stood where it still stands and Downford had been recently built. With the exception of the National School and an old tollgate there were no buildings till you got well past the factory (Burfields) and into Cacklebury. The houses on the left hand side of the road, Victoria Road, the pretty little Deer Paddock and clock tower (now the site of the Police Station), the houses leading to and about the Railway Station, Cobden Place, Devonshire Place and the railway station and buildings around it have all been erected since the date mentioned.

In North Street, then known as Back Lane (a veritable lane almost impassable in winter) , there were a few cottages , which are still standing but nothing more, with the exception of the house in which Miss Sinnock lived until recently. At the rear of the Terminus Hotel (now Neptune’s) was a small cottage still standing I think, and in front of it were the stocks, and I remember to

This was I think the last occasion on which the stocks were used in the Parish, and it is narrated that the official who had been sent from Lewes to see the sentence duly carried out, being anxious to catch the conveyance and get away home said to the prisoner

‘it wants but a quarter of an hour of the time and I shall let you out I think,’ but the prisoner , much to the officers surprise replied, ‘Squire Darby said I be to be here two hours, and I’m g’wine to be here two hours, so you’ll have to wait.’ ” In 1850 Hailsham Common still existed (it was enclosed in 1855). Jenner states that the Common was bounded

by Cacklebury, Diplocks Farm, Courtlands, the Common Pond, Ersham and Sandbanks. He then moves on to Summerfields (now the site of Sussex Close/Sussex Avenue), which at that time was occupied by the, “celebrated fox hunting Squire, King Sampson and a cottage near lodged his no less well known huntsman Press.”

Jenner concluded his article by describing

one part of the Common. “In passing to Sandbanks or Cacklebury you crossed just a breezy bit of Common as you will find at places still in Sussex and Surrey, open to all the winds of heaven, sprinkled with furze bushes, and covered with grass well cropped by the flocks of sheep and geese that strolled about unmolested. It is from these geese perhaps that Cacklebury got its name; at all events in those days they were quite an institution, and as darkness fell could be seen crossing the common in all directions, in solemn procession, bowing and cackling all the way.”

Jenner subsequently purchased a house called The Acacias, now the premises of Taylor Engley and The Spectacle Showroom. He was active in many aspects of the town including the Parish Church where he was church warden. He died in 1928 aged 97.

Recipes

A taste of Spring

SODA BREAD Makes 2 loaves Ingredients 500g plain white flour 10g salt 4 tsp baking powder 300ml buttermilk Flour for dusting Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas mark 6. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the liquid slowly while mixing to make a dough.

Knead briefly, divide into two and shape into rough rounds.

Pat to flatten until about 2-3 inches / 5-8 cm thick. Cut a

deep cross in the top of the loaf (cut almost all the way through but not quite) and stab lightly all over.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Allow to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes and eat warm with butter.

Variations Thinned yoghurt or half milk to water works instead of buttermilk if you don’t have any. Experiment with flour mixtures. Spelt flour and rye flour make tasty additions.

Add a couple of large handfuls

of dried fruit to the mix. Raisins and sultanas, or chopped dates work very well.

Try a half-and-half mixture of plain and wholemeal flour and add a spoon of black treacle to the mix. It makes a denser, sweeter soda bread which is great with cheese.

Or using half plain and half wholemeal flour, add a couple of handfuls of chopped walnuts and a couple of tablespoons of honey.

Try switching the buttermilk for beer (works best with wholemeal flour) The variations are endless.

BANANA & WALNUT LOAF Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 60-70 minutes Ingredients 225g plain flour 2 level tsp baking powder 80g softened or spreadable butter 1 large egg (beaten) 110g caster sugar 4 medium bananas (peeled) 50g walnuts (chopped) Zest 1 lemon Demerara sugar for sprinkling

Method Preheat oven to 180C / gas 4.

Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin.

Mash three bananas to a pulp and chop the fourth.

Sift the flour and baking powder together into a separate bowl. Add the butter, egg and caster sugar. Using a mixer mix everything together for a minute or two. Add the mashed and chopped bananas and briefly whisk them into the mixture. Fold in the chopped walnuts and

lemon zest.

Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin. Sprinkle with Demerara sugar.

Place in the pre-heated oven so that the top of the tin is in the centre. Bake for 60-70 minutes until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.

Let the cake cool for 10-15 minutes then turn out on to a cooling rack.

This cake is good served warm with crème fraiche, cold, or even toasted.

DAISY TURNS Daisy.

100!

A

woman who lives at residential dementia care home in Hailsham has turned 100 years old. Daisy Hollick currently lives at Quinnell House, in the quiet residential area of Quinnell Drive. It is a warm, welcoming and buzzing place full of lovely residents and happy workers.

Daisy was born in Fulham, London, and spent most of her life in this area of the country, until she moved to Hailsham in August 2008 when she started living at Quinnell House. Daisy lived with her grandparents when she was growing up and helped out on their stall at Fulham Market. She finished school and found work in a launderette, she then got married and had two children.

Unfortunately they are no longer with us.

Daisy is a very humble lady, if you sit down with a cup of tea and some biccys and have a chat with her she will be more than content.

This is what Daisy had to say when we met with her.

WE: Hi Daisy! Thank you for having a cuppa with us this

morning, we hear you have had a big birthday recently?

Daisy: Yes, I’m 100 now!

WE: Wow! How does it feel to be 100?

Daisy: I feel no different, I carry on living each day on how I feel, I am always happy and enjoy life as much as I can.

WE: I bet you have a few stories and memories to tell?

Daisy: We all have stories and memories. My memory isn’t what it was so I can’t think of one.

WE: Do you have a favourite type of music?

Daisy: I love cockney music, I used to sing all of the songs when I was a little girl.

WE: Any particular song?

Daisy: (Singing) Daisy Daisy, Give me your answer do, I’m half crazy…

(Daisy Continued to sing and other residents joined in until we had a full choir)

Quinnell House.

WE: That was brilliant - thanks for the rendition! Daisy, did you enjoy your party that the home threw for you? I hear there was lots of cake, tea, music and even dancing?

Daisy: We had a great time, laughing and listening. It was a lovely day.

WE: That’s good to know - what have you got planned for the rest of the day?

Daisy: We are waiting for lunch now, we have left over cold meat and roast potatoes with bubble and squeak on a Monday! Always have since I was a little girl, and I’m not changing now!

WE: YUM! Thanks for having us Daisy, we hope to see you again soon!

Daisy: You will, and I shall be sitting here, see you again!

Back in Time APRIL

1990 I

t’s with some trepidation that we venture into the naughty nineties this time because I’m well out of my comfort zone.

Sitting at the top of the UK singles chart was a German pop group, Snap, with “The Power” taken from their “World Power” album. You might remember this thanks to its catchy hookline “I’ve got the power”. Or maybe not!

Incidentally, this single opens with an enigmatic Russian line – “the American company Transceptor Technology has started production of the Personal Companion computer”. Thought that’d be of interest – hehe.

Let’s move on to more familiar ground. Proving yet again that The Beatles’ music never dies, lodged at number three, behind the B52s’ “Love Shack”, was Candy Flip’s version of “Strawberry Fields Forever”. This British electronic dance band was so named from ‘candyflipping’, the slang term for taking LSD and ecstasy at the same time, apparently. Anyway, this was the band’s only top ten British hit; I wonder why! Elsewhere in the top ten, was Madonna’s former chart-topper, the upbeat dance/pop track “Vogue” which, more or less defined dance music for this decade.

You may remember this from the single’s sleeve where the singer is dressed in, erm, black stockings and suspenders. Just below her were Erasure’s heavily synthesized “Blue Savannah”, American alternative rock group They Might Be Giants’ “Birdhouse In Your Soul”, and chirpy, chippy Jason Donovan’s “Hang On To Your Love”. This was one of five top ten singles taken from his second album “Between The Lines” produced by the often criticised, but unquestionably innovative, Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Whatever anyone might have thought about this trio, they certainly made an indelible mark during the late 1980s/early 1990s, earning the accolade of being the most successful composing/producing partnership of all time. Check this out - they scored over one hundred top forty UK hits, sold in excess of forty million records, and earned around £60 million on the way! Jason, alongside the likes of Mel & Kim, Sinitta, Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue had a lot to be grateful for.

So this guy Jason from “Neighbours” - where his character Scott Robinson enjoyed a romantic relationship with Charlene Mitchell, played by the aforementioned Miss Minogue - certainly proved he had staying power in the music business. Not only did he excel as a teen idol singer, but also a film and stage actor. A man of many talents who’s still going strong. Yay! Sharon Davis

ailsham Lawn Tennis Club is a friendly, social Club where you can meet new friends as well as improve your fitness or just have a good game of tennis!

We play on four all-weather courts throughout the year (under floodlights in the winter evenings) behind the cricket pavilion at the Western Road Recreation Ground.

Junior coaching.

Coaching is available for adults and children in a structured programme, as well as cardio-tennis for fitness.

The Club is affiliated to the LTA and has been awarded the LTA’s Club Mark.

There are regular Club tennis

French visit. sessions all week to suit different levels and availability, the session times are available on our website.

Courts are free for members to play their own games as well, and the Club runs regular internal tournaments and fun days, as well as running teams in various Sussex Leagues.

The Men’s Team has been experiencing great success recently, and continues to move up the divisions.

The Club also hosts regular social events, including meals, quizzes and dances.
