Trainer Kerry Houlahan with Little Big Shot

HOULAHAN AND BURNS COMBINE FOR FIRST CITY WIN.

Jason Adams

Trainer Kerry Houlahan and owner Glen Burns combined for their first city win last Thursday night at Sandown. The pride and joy of Houlahan could not be missed as she was full of smiles following the win. She’s trained greyhounds for just five years and won her first race at Sandown in February, a heat of the Judy Hayley Memorial, with Thursday’s triumph her first at city level. “This is my first full stakes win,” she said with a glowing grin. It was courtesy of Little Big Shot who took full advantage of box 1 to win the penultimate event of the night. He began fairly to settle 2nd then took the lead on the apex of the home turn. He held on to win by ¾ of a length at a price of $8. It wasn’t just Houlahan who was ecstatic with the win, Burns was also beyond proud of ‘Looney’. “I almost fell off my chair, I’ve never had that sort of thrill in my life. It’s amazing to have a dog who can compete at city level,” said Burns. Little Big Shot started his racing career in New South Wales before he was bought by Burns after 14 starts for $6000. “I didn’t have high expectations when I bought him. I own his half-sister Empress Lu and I’ve loved her attitude and nature, I hoped another produced by the same mother would have similar traits.” Burns’ time in greyhound racing spans over just three years. He bought a small share in a syndicate before taking the next step and owning outright.

“I bought a 5% share in a pup who was trained by Darren Pattinson. I thought, I might go out and buy my own and see how we go. “Since then I haven’t had one who has raced at a loss.”

Copley’s Corner Ennis, which was the $4.80 second elect from box By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley two.

Patty's dynamic Maturity Triumph

Dyna Patty began well off the inside but was outpaced by Chief's Empire ($6.40) in the run to the first turn. Dyna Patty took over down the back straight as Orson Allen ($6.70) moved into second, and that was how they stayed as Dyna Patty kept going strongly in the home straight to score by 2.26 lengths in a scorching 29.73sec, with Tritt Tritt third. It was Dyna Patty's 11th win from 22 starts, with the victory taking her prize money earnings up to $204,990. Dyna Patty wins the Maturity Classic ahead of Orson Allen (Photo—Clint Anderson)

"She's every bit as good as them, probably better, to be honest," Tom Dailly said, comparing Dyna Patty favourably with former star females trained by the Dailly family, including Star Of Mine and Cape Drina.

Favourite Dyna Patty emulated her sire, champion sprinter-turned stud sensation Fernando Bale, with a dominant victory in the Group 1 Maturity Classic Final (525m) at The Meadows last Saturday night.

"She's a ripper. nice natured and very relaxed, which is what you want in a greyhound. She's a very good racer and her greatest asset is her speed.

Fernando Bale won the Maturity in 2015 and the Andrea Dailly-trained Dyna Patty, a daughter of Unix Bale, continued the freakish young stud dog's phenomenal 2018 when defeating another exciting Wheeler-bred prospect in Orson Allen.

I knew she could run the time required to win the race, so it was always a question of whether she would be able to avoid interference.

Dyna Patty, which won the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star match race series at Sandown Park in May, had produced the standout performances in both the heat and semi-final stages of the $100,000 to -the-winner Maturity, clocking 29.73sec and 29.80 respectively, both best of night performances.

"I didn't think she could lead early, but when she lobbed in second position I was pretty confident. I was just relieved Orson Allen wasn't in front of her though, because if he was I don't think she would've caught him."

Drawn in box one, as had been the case in the semifinal, Dyna Patty started $2.50 favourite, ahead of Tritt Tritt, one of two finalists trained by Brooke

2.26 lengths x 2.87 lengths 29.73 Dyna Patty stamped herself as one of the fastest sprinters in Australia after she took out the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star at Sandown Park in May. After an unsuccessful Group 1 Sapphire Crown campaign, Dyna Patty hit back at The Meadows for the threeweek Maturity series where she set the time standard in both the heats (29.73sec) and the semi-finals (29.80sec). Dyna Patty is yet to run unplaced at The Meadows (nine starts for five wins and four minor placings). She was equal favourite to win this series at $10 before it began, and had been the outright favourite since winning her heat. She was the only female greyhound in this final. Her sire, Fernando Bale, won this race in 2015.
