Copley’s Corner Blue can strike from wide draw

Orson awesome in Shootout

By Andrew Copley

By Mick Floyd

Blue Striker Eight sensational heats of the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup (515m) will be held at Sandown Park on Friday night, and one greyhound that must be respected is Blue Striker. Trainer Peter Akathiotis is quietly confident about the chances his up-and-coming star, who boasts a scintillating 29.20sec PB at Sandown, the fastest among the eight contenders in his heat. “The good thing about box eight is that he will have room early and can create his own luck. I think he will either be leading or sitting second early behind Emerald Rainbow early, and if that’s the case he should prove hard to beat,” Akathiotis said. Blue Striker is on the third line of betting behind West On Augie ($3.60Fav) and Dyna Hunter ($3.70), while he is currently priced at $21 to win next Friday’s $630,000 final. Akathiotis won the Melbourne Cup in 1992, and while he says Blue Striker has marginally more ability than his Cup hero Master Giant, he said the race is a lot harder to win these days. “Back in those days there were probably about 1520 greyhounds around Australia that you would call genuine Group 1 dogs, but today there’s about 50 of them,” he said. Akathiotis said Blue Striker is in prime condition after overcoming a toe injury, and described his greyhound as a “good all round package”. “He has a very good first section, second section and run-home time. None of his sections are absolutely outstanding, but I see that as an advantage because generally if a greyhound has a brilliant first section, for instance, they tire at the end of their races. Or if they are super strong at the finish they are generally slow early,” he said. Sandown will also host four heats of the $150,000 Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) on Friday night, with TAB offering $2,500 jackpots on the First 4s in every race.

Trainer Correy Grenfell shares a moment with Orson Allen after their pair shared their first group win in the Shootout. Orson Allen showed he is a force to be reckoned following his brilliant all of the way victory in the $25,000 winner-takes-all Shootout at Sandown Park last Thursday. Stepping cleanly from box three in the four dog field, Orson Allen accelerated quickly to assume the lead through the first turn and was never headed, stopping the clock in 29.19sec to break through for his – and his 24 year old trainer Correy Grenfell – first group race win. “He went super,” said a delighted Grenfell after the race. “We’ve been in a few group finals now and that’s the first one we’ve grabbed. We knew the dog would get one it was just a matter of when.” Orson Allen showed his Shootout credentials a week earlier by running down fellow Shootout finalist She’s Gifted in a sick 29.18sec. He then ran a luckless fifth in the Group 3 Silver Bullet (525m) at The Meadows on Monday night, meaning his Shootout run would be his third race in eight days. While not an ideal preparation for a race of this nature, Grenfell was proud of his charge’s performance. “I was a little worried about the short back up – it’s the first time I’ve backed him up so soon. The race on Monday didn’t go to plan, he got knocked around a little but he pulled up well from it so it’s a credit to him.” Orson Allen’s Shootout win was his 15th from 30 career starts, taking his prize money beyond $140,000. Copley’s Corner Ageless veteran calls it a day

(Cover Story) Raw Ability retires to stud By Molly Haines

By Molly Haines

224 start veteran Oaklands has retired and unlike many, he doesn’t have a single grey hair to show his age. Oaklands in action Photo - Jason McKeown Owned and trained by Gary Edwards in Broadford for every single one of his 224 starts, which included 31 wins and 75 minor placings. Described as remarkable and enduring by Gary and wife Rae, I don’t think they are far off the mark. He may not have tasted group race glory, but he did provide happiness and intrigue among the greyhound racing community. “You would be amazed how many people ask after him,” Edwards said. “His last few runs where he has tumbled, we have had phone calls from people asking if he is okay.” The son of Oaks Road and Lil’ Bit Cool retired last month due to a back-muscle injury. “He may be nearly six-years-old, but he still looks like a young dog with a shiny black coat and no grey whatsoever. He still thinks he’s young as he bounces around and pulls along on the lead.” Edwards said there is no secret to Oaklands’ longevity, but he does think the straight track at Healesville provided easier runs on his ageing body. “He is highly intelligent and always tried 110% in every one of his 224 race starts. He is actually the perfect dog. Oaklands is much loved and will remain so in retirement.” Oaklands will retire in second position for the highest number of starts by a Victorian trained greyhound since 2000 behind Galloping Graham (250 starts).

Raw Ability Winning a heat of the 2017 Melbourne Cup Photo—Clint Anderson

The gift that kept on giving - Raw Ability - has called it a day. After 46 career starts and a 48% winning strike rate, Raw Ability has been retired and will stand at stud. Trainer and co-owner Anthony Azzopardi decided that, after a couple of falls that knocked the confidence of both Anthony and Raw Ability, the time was right to draw and end to his star’s career. “Without a doubt, he is the fastest greyhound I have ever put a collar and lead on,” Azzopardi said. “The times he could run against Group 1 dogs was just amazing.” Raw Ability had exactly that, raw ability – somuch-so he ran within a length of Black Magic Opal’s 515 metre first split record at Sandown Park. “His sectionals are off the chart and to add to his early speed he was a great chaser,” Azzopardi said. “Raw Ability is a terrific dog all-round – he could perform on the track and he is a gentleman in the kennels. He is so quiet and has the best nature which is so important when you are breeding nowadays.” Lordy, as he is called around the kennels, was a winner of 22 races from 46 starts. His first Group 1 Community Day this Sunday breakthrough came in the 2017 Adelaide Cup over fellow sire and Melbourne Cup winner Aston Dee Bee. Join us at this Sunday’s Greyhound Community Day His second Group 1 victory came at Wentworth for a day filled with great dog-friendly activities. Park, in the 2018 Paws Of Thunder. GCA GCA RUN OF THE MONTH AWARD OCTOBER 2018 “ASTON KIMETTO”

The GCA Run of the Month for October 2018 has been awarded to up and star Victorian Aston Kimetto after his extraordinary win in the Geelong Cup October 26th. Powerhouse youngster Aston Kimetto brought back memories of his champion mother Sweet It Is with a barnstorming last-to-first victory in the Group 2 Pet Panels Geelong Gold Cup Final (460m) on last Friday night. Trained by Seona Thompson and raced by Ray Borda, last year’s Melbourne Cup-winning combination, Aston Kimetto is bred in the purple, with his dam Sweet It Is one of the greatest stayers Australian greyhound racing has seen and renowned for her paralysing finishing bursts. “To come from as far behind as he did and get there on the line over 460 metres is a huge effort.” Aston Kimetto wasted little time living up to his regal bloodlines when winning the Group 3 Warragul St Leger in August at just his sixth start, after which Jason Thompson labelled him as one of the most exciting dogs the Thompson family has had. The boom prospect was then beaten at his next five starts, with box manners his worst enemy, however he’s now back on track after claiming the second Group trophy of his brief career in the $47,000 to-the-winner Geelong Cup. Aston Kimetto is a Black dog whelped October 2016 by KC And All from Sweet It Is (Mogambo x Off Springer). He is raced by Ray Borda and trained by Seona Thompson at Pearcedale in Victoria. He has now won 8 races and been placed on four occasions from his 15 starts. His overall stake money stands at $92,250. GCA congratulates owner Ray Borda, trainer Seona Thompson and Aston Kimetto after being judged the GCA Run of the Month for October 2018. He joins last month’s winner Kouta Mayhem, and Equilibrium, Fernando Express as the winners of GCA Run of the Month for the new year 2018-2019. *This article was compiled by Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines. Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active.
