.

Three Barcia Bale litters THIS week’s review of litters selected from the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 17 October, starts with three litters by national stud success, Barcia Bale Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale). The three litters have a total of six dogs and nine bitches at an average of five per litter, a little below the list average of 6.3. NABROK breeder, Lyn Smith, has the first of the three litters, which has two dogs and three bitches, from the well bred bitch, Bag Of Magic (March 2014 Magic Sptite x Nova Surf), whose dam is by Surf Lorian x Nova Keroma (Go Wild Teddy x Mantina). She was the standout in her litter of eight named, from which the seven who raced all won, sharing 34 wins between them. Her record shows she raced 39 times, for 11 wins and 5 placings, with four wins over 515 metres at Sandown (29.54), three wins over 460 metres at Warragul (25.90), where she also won over 400 metres and single wins over 450 metres at Ballarat (25.38), 525 metres at Traralgon (30.49) and 525 metres at The Meadows (30.33). PEARCEDALE breeder, Bradley Keel, has the second Barcia Bale litter, which has very well bred bitch, Larico (October 2014 Djays Octane* x Pah Leeze), whose dam is by Collision x Brooklyn Belle (Where’s Pedro x Brooklyn Hope). She is from a handy litter of ten, with the nine who raced all winning, including Quartz Vein, 11 wins, Villa Jemma, 10 wins, Gold Vein, 9 wins, Diamonds On Fire,

8 wins and Sesame Street, 8 wins. Her record shows she raced just 11 times for a win over 600 metres at The Meadows (34.64) and two placings, over 525 metres at The Meadows and 699 metres at Cranbourne. BENJAMIN GEORGE, from Nerrena has the other Barcia Bale litter, which has two dogs and two bitches, from the proven producer, Scissor Queen (November 2009 Knocka Norris x Surf Queen), whose dam is by Surf Lorian x Queen Size (Deep North x Ultra Queen). She is from litter of eight named, all winners, which included outstanding Group 1 winner, now successful sire, Don’t Knocka Him, 51-25-8-8 $380.089. She raced 31 times for a very good record of 20 wins and five placings, winning 13 times at Grafton, where she won the Sprinters Cup, twice, over 400 metres at Maitland (22.42) and 399 metres at Albion Park (23.02). She has a long list of winners on file from her first four litters, whelped in September 2013, by Magic Sprite, September 2014, by Fabregas, August 2015 by Fernando Bale and her most recent litter to race, whelped in December 2016 by SH Avatar*, who are not two years old until next month. Not a lot in the way of quantity in this week’s Barcia Bale litters, but certainly plenty to like about the breeding, especially if you are lucky enough to get hold of one of the nine future brood bitches.

Copley’s Corner Minor upset on the cards?

Dapiran’s Northern Districts Circus Act

By Gerard Guthrie Respected trainer Peter Dapiran celebrated a feature race quinella at Shepparton on Saturday night when Circus Oasis edged out more-fancied kennelmate My Bro Lewis in a thrilling finish to the Group Listed Northern Districts Cup Final (450m). The one/two finish in the $25,000 to-the-winner Cup was a real family affair for the Northwood-based Dapirans on what they consider their home track. The victorious Circus Oasis is raced and bred by Josh Keirl, the partner of Peter’s daughter Bethany, while runner-up My Bro Lewis is raced by Peter and wife Mandy and was bred by Bethany. “It would have been nice if ours (My Bro Lewis) had won, but with Josh being my daughter’s partner it was good to get a result for them,” Peter Dapiran quipped. “Josh handled Circus Oasis and I handled My Bro Lewis. Josh and his dad, Royce, breed a couple of litters Maurice Minor Photo Clint Anderson a year so I was happy to see them win a nice race like this. “Time-wise there isn’t a lot between the four dogs,” said “Circus Oasis and My Bro Lewis have equal Maurice Minor’s trainer, Tom Tzouvelis. ability. My Bro Lewis has a motor but he doesn’t have a “I’m expecting She’s Gifted to lead, and I’m hoping lot of early pace and he can find himself in all sorts of Maurice Minor can sit behind her in second position, in trouble, while Circus Oasis held the track record at front of Orson Allen.” Horsham over 410m, which was only broken recently, “Aston Kimetto is the sweeper of the field, and he so they’re both fast dogs.” will be powering home at the finish.” Both Dapiran’s finalists had to contend with Should Maurice Minor lead at any stage, awkward draws, with 25.29sec heat winner My Bro Tzouvelis will be confident of a maiden group win. Lewis starting at $5.10 from box six, while Circus “Maurice Minor has never been run down before, so if Oasis, which finished a close second to final favourite he does find the lead I’d be surprised if they catch him,” Mayor Digby in his heat, was a $10.90 chance from the he said. four alley. Maurice Minor has had 60 starts for 20 wins and Dapiran’s duo settled midfield and My Bro Lewis $107,250 in prize money, having raced in heats and looked the winner when he dashed to the front turning finals of feature events in Victoria, NSW, South for home, but Circus Oasis followed him through and Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and his finished the stronger, scoring by .29 of a length in home state of Queensland. 25.45sec. “He is probably the most travelled greyhound in “I thought it was all over when My Bro Lewis hit Australia right now,” Tzouvelis said. “The only state I the front but then I looked up at the screen and saw the haven’t raced him in yet is WA. I’ve always believed other dog right there,” Dapiran said. that if you’ve got a greyhound good enough you should “I know there were a lot of local dogs in the race travel with them, provided you think they can be but it was a really good field; they were all experienced competitive, because it can be expensive.” at Shepparton and had good form at Shepparton and I “They also need the right temperament to travel thought it would be a matter of whoever got the breaks.” regularly. Our People 35 years service ONE of Victoria’s most respected servants of greyhound racing, Allan Hawkswell, has retired after 35 years of service to the industry. I must add it has been my great pleasure to have known Allan for all of that time and in fact had it not been for the many years I spent with Allan as my proof-reader and computer educator, Greyhound Weekly would not be where it is today. I worked with Allan on the Original Greyhound Weekly, then National Greyhound Form and have always been able to call on him for advice when I had a computer problem. Good luck old mate and don’t think I’ll stop calling you for advice just because you’ve retired. Roger Clark

Greyhounds in the home Well after four years these two are finally learning to Wow there's green stuff in my bedding!! love each other, makes me happy Andy Constantinides Anne Maree Kuhn

Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active. - 29 -

Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________
