Back-to-back Fanta Bale re-writes history books at Victorian Greyhound Awards Fanta Bale has created history by becoming the first greyhound to twice be crowned the Victorian Greyhound of the Year after a stunning 2017/18 racing season. The award, which Fanta Bale also won last year, was one of many highlights at the Victorian Greyhound Awards at Crown Palladium this evening, with a packed house celebrating many of the outstanding achievements in the sport as well as some of the greats of yesteryear. Former champion stayer Fanta Bale won seven group races including four Group 1s during the 2017/18 racing season, which encompassed the period of 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018. Bred in NSW and trained in Victoria by Robert Britton, Fanta Bale was also crowned the 2017/18 Victorian Stayer of the Year on the night, while Up Hill Jill

Talking Breeding -Victoria Victorian Litter Registrations Week Ending 1 October

Talking Breeding with Roger Clark

Sire/Dam

Breeder Dog

Three Barcia Bale litters THIS week’s review of litters selected from the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 1 October, starts with three litters by outstanding national stud success, Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale). Raidham Syndicate, Manager, Geoffrey Wickham has the first of the three Barcia Bale litters, which has two dogs and five bitches, from the beautifully bred bitch, Joffa’s Old Girl (October 2014 Bella Infrared* x Mepunga Lana), whose dam is by Premier Fantasy* x Mepunga Diva (Flying Penske* x Mepunga Silver), with her damline having an amazing triple cross of international bloodlines. She is from a list of litter of seven named, which produced six winners, who won 45 races between them. Her record shows she raced 58 times, for ten wins and eleven placings, earning $40,970 in stakes. She won six races at The Meadows, three over 525 metres (30.30) and three over 600 metres (34.65), won twice over 595 metres at Sandown (34.44) and also over 440 metres at Sale (25.19) and 390 metres at Warrnambool. She is one of the first, if not the first Bella Infrared* bitch to whelp so I would imagine the five bitches in this litter will attract enormous interest from prospective buyers with future breeding in mind. Apart from being one of the most successful sires of all time, Barcia Bale can now also boast the first $1million single race winner in Australia, after Mystic Riot (x Ready To Riot) scored a sensational all the way win the ground breaking final at Wentworth Park last Saturday night. Mystic Riot has now started 18 times, for eight wins and three placings and $1,024,274 in stakes.

and 34 placings, with stake earnings of $85,240. She finished second in the SA Distance Championship, was placed at Group level and made two other Group finals. She won four times over 725 metres at The Meadows (42.34H/C), four times over 650 metres at Shepparton (38.29) and also over 715 metres at Sandown (41.78), 731 metres at Angle Park (43.34) 545 metres at Ballarat (31.62) and 732 metres at Mt Gambier (43.94). She was an exciting, if not frustrating stayer who was always great to watch and was pleased to see her go to Barcia Bale and I look forward to seeing these youngsters when they hit the track.

CRANBOURNE breeder, Darren Langley has the final Barcia Bale litter, and would be over the moon with the four dogs and six bitches from the lightly raced bitch, Sheike (April 2013 Brett Lee x Christalle), whose dam is by Collision x Tarawi Tess (Head Honcho x Tarawi Lass). She is from a litter of nine with the seven who raced all winning and sharing 67 race wins between them. Her only 11 starts resulted in a 515 metres FIVE pups in the second Barcia Bale litter, registered by Kolora breeder, Kevin Dillon, from the well bred bitch, Gosford win (29.97), where she was also placed and then over 450 metres at Maitland. Mick’s Angel (January 2014 Kilty Lad x Seabrook Three exciting litters by Barcia Bale on the list Lass), whose dam is by Vapour Whirl x No Thoughts this week and not often we three such well bred litters (Just The Best x Your Thoughts). together. She was a very good stayer who had a habit of I would be happy with a pup from any of the three getting too far back early in her races, but she still put litters, but was strongly told, no more pups! together the good race record of 84 starts for 12 wins -8-

14 wins, and Shytown Hustler, 13 wins. Her record shows she raced 32 times, for five wins and eight placings, winning twice over 515 metres at Sandown (29.71, 29.76) and also over 520 metres at Cranbourne (30.57) and 515 metres at Launceston (30.14).

Fabregas litter

El Grand Senor TWO litters on the list this week by the sadly, recently departed, champion sprinter and successful sire, El Grand Senor (April 2008 Where’s Pedro x Elgrando Gold). Two More Syndicate, Manager, Gerrie Sneyders has the first of the two litters, which has three dogs and five bitches, from the well bred bitch, Amlin Jewel (November 2013 Magic Sprite x Amlin Lass), whose dam is by El Galo x In Flew Enza (Cyrus The Virus x Brandeen Misty). She is from a litter of eight named, all winners, who shared 58 wins between them. Her record shows she raced 50 times, for seven wins and 16 placings, winning twice over 311 metres at Cranbourne (17.73) and twice over 440 metres at Sale (25.30), with single wins over 390 metres at Warrnambool (22.27) and 315 metres at Traralgon (18.82), where she also won over 395 metres (22.80). She has one previous litter on file, with two dogs and seven bitches, whelped in November 2017, by Bekim Bale.

MARONG breeder, David Keanelly has a nice litter of pups on the list this week, by National Sprint Championship winner, and I think somewhat underrated sire, Fabregas (October 2010 Bombastic Shiraz x Wicked Witch). The one dog and six bitches are from the well bred bitch, Hey Roseeta (February 2011 Where’s Pedro x Fire Miss), whose dam is by Path To Power x Misty Magee (Ginger Magee x Fire Agent). She is from a litter of six named, with five winners, of eleven races between them and she was easily the standout, with 41 starts, for five wins and 15 placings. She won twice over 699 metres at Cranbourne (42.10), where she also won over 520 metres (31.13) and won 595 metres at Sandown (34.82), where she also won over 715 metres (42.89). She has had success as a brood bitch, with good winners from her first litter, whelped in December 2014, by Shakey Jakey, which produced. Hey Good Lookin’, Lightwood Miss, Mahjong Baby, Mahjong Heat and Mahjong Rule.

You can read more in GRNSW’s Strategic Plan for In this 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, GRNSW sets out its 2018-2021 online at http://www.grnsw.com.au/ vision to see greyhound racing in NSW embraced as socially responsible, world leading racing entertainment. uploads/ To achieve this vision, GRNSW will be driving change through its three strategic pillars:  Responsible – welfare remains a key priority for GRNSW. Over the next three years, GRNSW will focus on its goals of modernising racing integrity, supporting the provision of care for all aspects of a greyhound lifecycle, enhancing rehoming, and providing a safe racing environment that reduces injuries. Specific initiatives include improvements to track design and safety, enhancements to the grading policy, and increasing rehoming capacity, amongst others. 

Competitive – GRNSW is committed to driving commercial growth across the industry. This will be achieved by pursuing goals surrounding increased prize money, sharing of revenue growth, diversification of revenue streams and enhancements to the racing experience of participants. GRNSW has already put into place on of its key initiatives under this pillar: greyhound racing’s richest race, the Million Dollar Chase (which also complements the other two pillars). GRNSW will also be focusing on race scheduling to maximise wagering potential, investment in growing club revenue, and advocating for maximisation of the industry’s share of revenue under wagering legislation and agreements. Sustainable – vital to the continued success of the industry is financial sustainability, and the ongoing social contribution to the community. GRNSW’s goals include optimisation of the race track portfolio, the optimal operation of registered clubs, and the benefits we give back to communities. Initiatives include developing an optimised race - 13 -

Copley’s Corner Patty the top pick in Topgun By Andrew Copley Superstar greyhound Dyna Patty is the $2.70 favourite to win Saturday night’s Group 1 TAB Topgun (525m) at The Meadows despite not having won in almost three months. The dark brindle sprinter’s most recent win was nine starts ago in the Group 1 Maturity Dyna Patty Classic (525m) at The Meadows in July, when she exited box one, the same draw she has in the Topgun. “I couldn’t be happier with the draw,” said trainer Andrea Dailly. “She isn’t very consistent coming out of the boxes, but the red draw (box one) is perfect for her.” “Unfortunately she collided with a dog turning for home, but if she didn’t hit that dog she would’ve won that race. Hopefully she gets out well on Saturday and gets a clear run, because if she does she’ll be hard to beat.” Dyna Patty has had three starts from box one throughout her career, netting two wins and a third. Dailly said Dyna Patty was desperately unlucky not to win her most recent race, a semi-final of the Million Dollar Chase (520m) at Wentworth Park in Sydney on October 12, when she ran fourth as the $1.80 favourite after encountering interference on the home turn. Don’t miss your free four-page TAB Topgun Liftout in your Herald Sun on Friday. However, they’ll have to be at their very best to overcome in-form NSW stayer Poco Dorado, who has won his past five races – all in the best time of the night – including the Group 3 Sydney Cup at Wentworth Park last weekend. Lunchtime for humans - and apparently dogs too! Mel Finch

My dog’s name is Delta. She’s a greyhound and used to be a racer. My wife wanted to adopt her and I wasn’t too keen. I used to think that greyhounds were vicious and needed a lot of exercise. I was surprised to see that Delta (a typical greyhound) is very sweet and loves cuddles. She’s low maintenance – she only needs one 20 minute walk a day. We give her lots of TLC to improve her confidence and it’s so rewarding. Now that we’ve had her a few years, I’ve become a crazy greyhound person (even worse than a crazy cat person!)” Ben – Melbourne. ------------------------------------------------------------------We're celebrating #HumansofNandos by profiling some of the wonderful people who work at Nando’s Australia. Ben works at a Nando’s in Melbourne and you can find out more about GAP Greyhound Adoption Program VIC here : http://gap.grv.org.au/
