Copley’s Corner Deadline closing in on Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales By Andrew Copley

Nominations for Victoria’s 2018 Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales close this Friday at 5pm. The series is being thrown open to national and international breeders for the first time in 2018, and with many cashed up potential buyers set to attend the auction, this is a great opportunity for breeders and owners of greyhounds to profit on their investments. KEY INFO Eligible age bracket: Open to greyhounds born between 1 July 2016 & 30 June 2017. Nominations close: Friday 12 October at 5pm. To nominate to ready2race.grv.org.au Heats: Monday 12 November – morning (four-dog fields) Finals: Saturday 17 November – morning (six-dog fields) Auction: Saturday 17 November – afternoon Location: Bendigo (425m) Q&A with Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association Manager, Troy Harley Q. Why should breeders/owners nominate their pups for the 2018 Ready 2 Race series? The R2R has proven to be great for sellers since its inception now more than ever owners, groups and syndicates are looking for dogs ready to go on with. They have confidence in the fact they are seeing what they are buying and not having to take the long road and gamble on pups. Buyers are getting smarter, too, and they know when they see a dog capable of winning races and that is worth buying. Q. What would be holding breeders/owners back from nominating their pups? There should be nothing holding breeders back. There are buyers out there for most types of dogs and with the ability to buy back the greyhound if they do not reach the owners desired price means there is no risk. Q. For breeders who are unfamiliar with the Ready 2 Race initiative, what can they expect from the event in 2018?

Heat day is pretty straight forward. The greyhounds are kennelled as per race day and heats are conducted in fields of four with generally groups of four heats heading to the boxes together. Finals day is a bigger event with the six dog finals to be conducted in the morning followed by a break to give dogs an empty and drink before the auction commences just after lunch. Greyhounds are auctioned inside Chasers (main patron building) and usually have a crowd of 200 – 250 people. Q. Will there be any notable differences between the 2018 Ready 2 Race series compared to previous years? This year the eligibility has been opened up to include greyhounds born in all states of Australia and New Zealand, as opposed to just being for Victorian-bred greyhounds in the past. To find out more go to: ready2race.grv.org.au ____________________________________________ The Real deal? Victoria’s hopes of continuing its Adelaide Cup dominance on Friday night rest with one greyhound, the Seona Thompson-trained Real Simple. Five heats of the Adelaide Cup were run last Thursday, with numerous Victorians failing to qualify for the $75,000 to-the-winner final including Aston Kimetto and Chief’s Empire, who were joint favourites heading into the series. An explosive beginner, Real Simple led all the way to clock the fourth fastest heat time in what was his 21st victory from 50 starts. Victorian greyhounds have won eight of the last nine Adelaide Cups. Local greyhound Fabwik is the $2.30 TAB favourite after scoring the fastest heat win by five lengths. Real Simple is next in betting at $4.20. 2018 Adelaide Cup Friday 12 October, 8.38pm (local time) 1. Fabwik $ 2.30 2. Larrikin Locky $ 18.00 3. Real Simple $ 4.20 4. Honcho Monelli $ 5.00 5. Bogie Bullet $ 41.00 6. Alpha Aion $ 5.50 7. Master Chaos $ 51.00 8. Spring Bridge $ 7.00 Reserves 9. Gemtree Dynamo $ 51.00 10. Vital Force $ 21.00 Note: TAB odds as at 9 October.

Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so: Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active Noel McMahon _____________________________________________ Naww, those eyes.
