LIGHTNING FRANK RETIRED Electrifying sprinter Lightning Frank – a winner of two Group 1s at The Meadows – has been retired. The son of Black Magic Opal and Kirabilli Abbie rose to fame after a fantastic victory in the Group 1 Silver Chief in 2017, backing that marvelous victory up six weeks later to beat the best chasers in the land, winning the Group 1 Temlee in a brilliant 29.67. The black flash also started favourite in the 2017 Group 1 Australian Cup after winning his heat in a sizzling 29.53, including a second section of 17.40 – just half a length outside Fernando Bale’s split record. Trained by Mathew Wright and owned by the Hashtag Syndicate, Lightning Frank finished with 22 wins from 47 starts, earning $338,787 in prize money. Wright explained the decision to retire a greyhound known for his stunning turn of foot. “He was entered for Ballarat this week because he was going so well (21.80 in a trial at Ballarat on a recent Saturday morning) but he injured his monkey muscle so we’ve

decided that he’s had enough. It seems to happen to the real fast greyhounds and he is a rising four year-old so we thought he has had enough and he has had his fair share of injuries along the way,” said Wright, who hopes his star charge gets his chance as a stud dog. “The stud game is a tough one with such dominance from Fernando Bale and Barcia Bale, but we hope he gets his chance. He will relax on the couch, but hopefully he’ll get some females to serve. We will have a chat as to what it will look like going forward in regards to where he will be standing, but if people would like to use him there are straws available. If he isn’t used at

stud he will retire as a happy old dog.” Wright had lots of highlights to pick from, but pin-pointed two wins in particular that stuck in his mind. “His Temlee win is hard to go past on pure brilliance. His second split run in the Australian Cup heat is still the second quickest ever so sitting back and watching the replays is pretty special now, but his Silver Chief heat win was amazing. He was in all sorts of trouble early in that race and for him to win was something that made us think that the dog was pretty special. Enjoy retirement, Frank. It’s certainly well deserved. She was the standout, with her eight starts resulting in four wins, two over 440 metres at Sale (24.89) and single wins over 460 metres at Warragul (26.17) and 525 metres at Traralgon (31.08). Not a lot of race form to go on, but plenty to look at in the pedigree and these well bred youngsters are certainly in good hands.

OUR final litter for review from this week’s Victorian Litter Registrations list has seven pups by the underrated sire Walk Hard (September 2010 Bit Chili x Miss Bling). Registered by Sunbury breeder, Steve Daniliuk, the two dogs and five bitches and from the well bred. Talking Breeding NSW Talking Breeding New South Wales There are still no litter reviews from NSW again this week as we have not received any details of the Whelping Report for May from GRNSW. We have had discussions with them though and have been assured they are working on the problem and hope to have it resolved very shortly. We will resume NSW Litter reviews as soon as the information starts to flow again.

GCA Greyhound of the Month “I thought if he could jump he was a real show, but he had to jump and he’s probably been down on form just a little bit and so I was a little bit worried about that. But he’s certainly been in the good care of Robert and Mary (Britton) and he’s come out and done really well tonight.”

GCA GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH AWARD AUGUST - WEST ON AUGIE

Not only did Britton have family members track side, a large support team also made the trek east to contest the Nationals decider.

West On Augie holds off the challengers to win the National Sprint (Pic Clint Anderson)

“It really is about them being a part of it all. (Handler) Luke Townsend’s is probably the most excited man on course tonight, and the Westons (owners). Chris will be sitting at home in the lounge room, grabbing the red wine or a champagne right now. It’s fantastic.” It was West On Augie third win for the month leading all the way in best of the night performances at Cannington to qualify for the National final at Sandown.

The GCA Greyhound of the Month for August has been awarded to star Western Australian sprinter West On Augie. He was the outstanding winner of the Group 1 National Sprint Championship at Sandown on 24 August at Sandown. West On Augie claimed Western Australia’s first National Sprint Championship since 1997 when he defeated a star studded line up to claim the $75,000 first prize. Prince Of Tigers won the title for the West at Angle Park in Adelaide back in 97. Victorian Sprint final winner Big Flood was all the rage as punters rushed to back him from $3 into $2.25, however it was West On Augie that best timed the start to lead through the first turn. The striking red fawn dog was pressured the entire journey by Hasten Slowly trained by Angela Langton but proved too strong in the run to the line, holding on by half a length in 29.43.

West On Augie is a Red Fawn dog whelped February 2016 by Fernando Bale from Te Amo (Cosmic Rumble x Osti’s Bride). He is raced by the Weston Weston Syndicate and trained by Chris Halse at Nambeelup in West Australia. He has now won 21 races and been placed on three occasions from his 33 starts. His current prizemoney stands at $260,605. GCA congratulates owners, the Weston Weston Syndicate, trainer Chris Halse & West On Augie on being awarded the GCA Greyhound of the Month for August. He joins Dyna Patty, Tornado Tears May & June, Trouper Monelli, Up Hill Jill, Out Of Range and Ritza Lenny as the GCA Greyhounds of the Month winners for 2018.

The gallant South Australian Cairnlea Kenny finished third a length further back in a thrilling finish that saw the first fifth greyhounds over the line separated by just two lengths.

For more information please contact: Neil Brown GCA Publicity Officer Tel: 03 97691234 Mob: 0423 129 950

That good early speed was the key to the race, according to kennel representative Linda Britton.

Copley’s Corner Hot heat run puts Jean in Healesville Cup Malcolm Davis and is owned by Malcolm’s daughter-in-law Sonia Davis. frame By Andrew Copley

Hot Jean winning a heat of the Healesville Cup in 19.02 (best) Photo: Clint Anderson An extraordinarily quick heat win by Hot Jean has Exford trainer John Barbara dreaming big ahead of Sunday’s Group 3 Healesville Cup (350m). Hot Jean (Vee Man Vane – Hot Genetics) exploded out of box six to win in 19.02sec, which was 1.5 lengths quicker than the next fastest heat winner, dual Group 1 winner Raw Ability. “I’ve been training greyhound for 35 years and never had a group winner. I’ve had a lot of handy dogs over the years but no superstars. To win the Healesville Cup would be a huge thrill,” Barbara said after Hot Jean paid $9.90 for the win. “I’m told she ran close to the first sectional record at Healesville in her heat, and if she can run that again and get to the rail she’ll be very hard to beat. The race will be won in the first 15 metres.” Hot Jean ran 6.38sec to the first section, which is a length off Banjo Shark’s 6.32sec split record. Barbara said his star could have upper hand over a number of Healesville Cup contenders given her experience at the track. “She is a regular at Healesville which gives her an advantage and I run her up my 240m straight at home every second day, so she is used to running in a straight line,” he said. Hot Jean made it 10 wins from 24 career starts, and the Healesville Cup will be her first appearance in a group final. Barbara said the main dangers in the Healesville Cup were Raw Ability and Startron, with the latter running down the brilliant Peter Galo to win his heat. Hot Jean was bred in Altona Green by

Mischievous hounds find homes Last weekend’s first ever Mavericks and Mischief Makers greyhound adoption event in Seymour proved an outstanding success. Some greyhounds are a little more eccentric than others, making them marginally more difficult to rehome once they finish racing, and a total of 12 greyhounds in that description found loving new homes on the day. Adding to the success of the day was the fact that a further 11 greyhounds were also adopted from the Greyhound Adoption Program’s kennels on the day, taking the total to 23.

He is owned by current star Luke McDonald and his dad, former Kangaroo Donald McDonald, along with tagger Ben Jacobs, Taylor Garner and former player Aaron Mullett. Trained by Jessica Sharp, Petey Baqui will return to Geelong this Thursday night in Race 3, and he has drawn the coveted box one.

Lightning Frank retires

Superstar litter brothers Tornado Tears and Rippin’ Sam will face off in a two-dog exhibition trial at Sandown Park on Thursday night over the 595m. In what is a throwback to the seventies and eighties when match races between two champion greyhounds were a semi-regular occurrence, trainer Robert Britton agreed to use the trial as a means of fine-tuning his duo ahead of the Speed Star at Sandown Park on Sunday, 16 September. Thursday’s exhibition trial will be broadcast live on Sky Racing at 7.10pm.

Dual Group 1 winner Lightning Frank has been retired. A four-year-old son of Black Magic Opal and Kirabilli Abbie, the Warrnambool sprinter won the 2017 Silver Chief and Temlee, both over 525m at The Meadows. Bred in Nhill by Andrea Gurry, Lightning Frank was trained by Mathew Wright and owned by the Hashtag Syndicate. He retires with 22 wins from 47 starts, while he earned $338,787 in prizemoney
