Copley’s Corner Gippsland Carnival: Sir Ian Botham on hand to launch Australia’s biggest regional racing series By Greyhound Racing Victoria

Blue Striker

The TRFM Gippsland Carnival is on once again, with one of the most recognisable sportsmen in the world set to launch it at Warragul this Thursday. Former England cricket captain Ian Botham will be in attendance for the launch of the third iteration of greyhound racing’s biggest country carnival. He will be joined by AFL games record holder and Victorian greyhound racing ambassador Brent Harvey as well as greyhound racing caller and tipster James Van de Maat. And all the action kicks off with the $75,000 GOLD FM Sale Cup on Boxing Day. The Gippsland Carnival is Australia’s biggest regional racing series and consists of four country cups in Sale, Warragul, Traralgon and Cranbourne: GOLD FM Sale Cup (650m) – 26 December (Boxing Day) Sale Greyhound Club Toyota Warragul Cup (460m) – 12 January Logan Park Spolly’s Syndications Traralgon Cup (525m) 26 January (Australia Day) Glenview Park Spolly’s Syndications Cranbourne Cup (520m) 9 February Cranbourne Racing Centre The series spans seven weeks and aims to increase competition and interest in the sport of greyhound racing in the Gippsland area. Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said the Gippsland Carnival had quickly become a staple of Australian greyhound racing. “Gippsland has long been a traditionally strong greyhound racing area and this carnival has seen the sport go to a new level in Victoria’s east,” Mr Clayton said. “In just three short years the Gippsland Carnival has

grown to be a prominent event on the Gippsland sporting calendar and we are thrilled to have it back once again. Last year’s winner, Monster Fish, took home $14,000 in prizemoney by earning 66 points in six races throughout the Gippsland Carnival; this included two first place and three second place finishes. The first leg of the carnival on Boxing Day incorporates the 2018 Sale Cup (650m) and the Gippsland Carnival Launch (440m); and the $75,000 to-the-winner cup will bring out an excellent field for the distance race. This could include one of the best racing greyhounds in the country with superstar stayer Rippin’ Sam on target to return from injury in time for the Gippsland Carnival’s headline event. Rippin’ Sam hasn’t raced since September, but the Group 1 winner returned to training in late November and trainer Robert Britton is optimistic he will make a timely comeback for the Sale Cup. The Sale Cup promises to be a big event with local politicians, leaders and sports stars expected to attend on Boxing Day. Star Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn will be cheering on the dogs trackside at the Trackside Party Paddock. He will also be spinning the wheel for one lucky person to win $10,000 or a car. The following Cups in Warragul, Traralgon and Cranbourne also have lucrative $47,000 purses, and former Collingwood champion and 2011 Brownlow medallist, Dane Swan, will be at the three sprint events. All four of the Gippsland Carnival Cups have free admission and family entertainment. _____________________________________________ Lucky 13 find new homes at adoption event By Andrew Copley Thirteen greyhounds found their forever homes at an adoption day in Shepparton on Sunday. It was the first ever greyhound adoption event for the region, with those dogs not finding a home being returned to Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) headquarters in Seymour. Greyhounds make wonderful pets and if you are thinking about bringing a greyhound into your life, you can meet some friendly former racers in Seymour or at GAP’s Baxter facility on the Mornington Peninsula. Copley’s Corner Mixed Ballarat Cup fortunes for Puleios By Gerard Guthrie

off in 25.19.

Prolific speedster Fully Loaded has a golden opportunity to step out from his superstar litter brother Poke The Bear’s giant shadow after sharing time honours in Saturday night’s heats of the Group 2 Volkswagen Ballarat Cup. It was a very mixed night for owner/breeders Darren Puleio and his father Michael, with Fully Loaded (pictured with trainer Neville Wakefield) earning a crack at his first Group trophy, while Topgun hero and Melbourne Cup finalist Poke The Bear bit the dust at $1.20 in the final heat, running third.

Andrea Dailly will also boast two finalists, with Dyna Patty and Speed Star both all-the-way winners, clocking 25.04 and 25.24 respectively. Heavily-backed favourites Dyna Hunter, trained by Steve Collins, and Belt Up Bubbs, prepared by Brooke Ennis, were both dominant winners, running 25.16 and 25.11 respectively, with Belt Up Bubbs, a son of Ennis’ three-time Group 1 winner My Bro Fabio, having now won five from six over Ballarat’s 450m course.

“That’s racing,” Darren Puleio offered philosophically.

The biggest shock came in the last heat, where Seona Thompson’s long odds-on favourite Poke The Bear was upstaged by Jimmy Redenbach’s 25.41 winner Shadale after meeting mid-race interference.

“Unfortunately, when they shut the gate, they shut the gate. But he (Poke The Bear) missed the start and you can’t afford to do that in these races.”

It was a bitterly disappointing night for Michelle MalliaMagri, who came to the track with high hopes for inform siblings Zoom Out and Burnout.

Fully Loaded, trained by Neville Wakefield, made a winning debut at Ballarat in the fifth of eight sudden death heats, leading all-the-way from box three in 24.96, improving his wonderful career strike rate to 28 from 52.

Zoom Out, a three-time runner-up at Group level, finished a gallant second to Speed Star, while Burnout, which had returned in brilliant fashion from a broken leg, tragically suffered what appeared to be a serious shoulder injury after falling heavily.

“Fully Loaded went super. He came out like a slingshot but he always does,” Puleio said.

Fully Loaded will have to contend with box five in the final; however Puleio remains optimistic about celebrating a perfect finish to what has been an “His time did surprise me a bit. I didn’t think he’d break unforgettable year. 25 and it was actually his first look at the track too. “I’d like to think he could find a bit!” Darren laughed. “The reason behind that was that before the Geelong Cup heats, his first trial at Geelong was sensational and “I don’t think box five is going to worry him too much. then even though he ran second in his heat at Geelong He’s probably had it about 20 times! he went quicker than his trial. So we decided not to trial him at Ballarat and it paid dividends.” “He’s just got to ping and if there’s a bit of a traffic jam, like there was last night, he’s off and gone. Catch me if Fully Loaded’s only previous appearance in a Group you can. event came in the Geelong Gold Cup Final in October, where he ran seventh to Seona Thompson’s Aston “I think Fully Loaded deserves to win a nice race and Kimetto. you couldn’t find a better or more deserving person than Neville. He will once again do battle with his Geelong conqueror at Ballarat after Aston Kimetto also clocked 24.96, “Neville and his wife Lila have done a quite remarkable coming from last to reel in tearaway leader Startron to job and they couldn’t have him going any better. The claim his ninth win from 18 starts. bond Neville and Fully Loaded have is just unbelievable and for Neville’s sake I would love to see him win the Aston Kimetto was the second leg of a heat double for race.” Seona Thompson, who won the 2017 Ballarat Cup with Aston Dee Bee, after recent South Australian recruit Copley’s Corner continues on page 22 Spring Bridge charged home to claim the opening runAll previous editions of Greyhound Weekly are available - www.victoriangreyhoundracing.com.au - 19 -

Copley’s Corner Patty peaking in time for Ballarat Cup By Andrew Copley

2018 BALLARAT CUP Saturday 8 December 1. Belt Up Bubbs, Brooke Ennis $3.30 2. Shadale, Robert Redenbach $17 3. Aston Kimetto, Seona Thompson $3.50 4. Speed Star, Andrea Dailly $11 5. Fully Loaded, Neville Wakefield $6 6. Dyna Hunter, Steven Collins $7 7. Spring Bridge, Seona Thompson SCRATCHED 8. Dyna Patty, Andrea Dailly $5 Reserves 9. Rixy Ya Pest, Mathew Wright $21 10. Sanjiro, Jess Grima $31

Superstar sprinter Dyna Patty has ended an 11-start winning drought and emerged as one of the main chances in Saturday night’s Group 2 Volkswagen Ballarat Cup Final (450m). Recording a slick all-the-way Ballarat Cup heat win last weekend in 25.04sec, little more than a length off the two fastest heat winners Aston Kimetto and Fully Loaded (both ran 24.96sec), Dyna Patty is currently a $5 chance after drawing box eight in the $67,000 final. “Drawn in the pink (box eight) should suit her because she likes a little bit of room,” said trainer Andrea Dailly. “I don’t expect her to lead again, but as long as she is thereabouts she’s a chance, because she is strong and hopefully she can zoom around the outside of them.” Dailly has a two-pronged attack with Speed Star, a greyhound that has led to the first turn in 20 of his 23 career starts, an outsider for the team at $11 with tab.com.au. “Speed Star’s main weapon is that he gets out of a box. He can definitely lead in this race, and once you lead you’re in with a chance,” she said. Andrea is chasing her third Ballarat Cup while husband Tom has won the race once before. Greyhounds in the home Zoe Iossifidis shared her first post. Just wanted to share these photos of my two because they are so sweet!

Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:      

Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active. - 29 -

Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________
