College

&Coffee

THE PAIRING THAT WE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

I remember the look on my mentor’s face when she saw me carrying a coffee in the middle of the day a few months after having graduated high school. She understood how great I felt; I had arrived. She said, “College is different.. Because you can walk into class with a cup of coffee, and no one will look twice.” Although, I have to admit, that was almost 15 years ago… And I’m fairly certain even first graders now walk into class with an iced latte.

However one thing stays the same: that sweet spot in time post-high school and before aging out of your mom’s health insurance is likely the first time ever that you have had the opportunity on a Tuesday at 1:00PM to check out a new coffee shop. And, my–have things changed since I was in that season. Not in, like, some nostalgic, pitiful way–in the best way. The Orlando coffee scene is at its prime, and it keeps getting better!

A 2023 Article by WalletHub determined Orlando to be #4 in the nation for Best Coffee City in America (preceded by big names like Portland, Seattle, and SanFran) and #2 for the lowest price per pack of coffee (McCann, 2023). And while in 2010 yours truly was finding out about coffee shops from my skinny jean wearing crush (shout out to Austin’s; I’ve never been there since), we’ve got this Orlandoan cafecito world much more easily accessible via social media.

Being in the coffee industry has its perks–like being able to phone a friend when you’ve been tasked with writing an article for one of my favorite places on this earth. So I worked with Jared from @orlandocoffeeculture to get the scoopiest of the scoops on the must-visit places based on the occasion (you’re welcome ;)).

Jared is not only a husband, father of two beautiful babies and a beach-lover, but also the “Mayor” of Orlando Coffee Culture and one of my favorite people to talk to when it comes to the Orlando coffee scene. When I asked him why he started the Orlando Coffee Culture account he said, “I’ve lived in 6 states and have always made a point to learn about each place’s coffee scene; Orlando was no different. What I love about coffee is the community around it and how it brings people together. It gives us an invitation to connect with ourselves and the people who we drink coffee with.” I couldn’t have said it better myself :’)

The @orlandocoffeeculture account has grown so rapidly, becoming a resource to not only coffee professionals but enthusiasts who want to know more about Orlando’s coffee scene and experience all that Orlando has to offer (step aside, Starbucks). So without further ado, enjoy!

Your Guide To DISNEY WORLD

Hi Reader! My name is Mel, and I’m what you call a “Disney Adult” (the cool kind, of course) and I’m here to give you the best tips and tricks that will help you for your next Disney World trip! Along with some outfit inspo so that you look your coolest in the parks, all while beating the Florida heat!

What to Wear:

If you wanna pull off the “Cool Disney Adult” look, these are your essential pieces!

1. Disney Tees:

• Oversized or Baby tees

The parks have a lot of merch, and a lot of oversized tee options, if you're looking for baby tees, you can find them in the “kids tee” section!

• A couple of small businesses that have some really cool designs are: @ropedropthreads @shopsubtledust and @shop.kachowvintage

2. Breathable Bottoms:

• Jorts, Biker Shorts, or Athletic/Boxer Style

3. Comfortable Shoes:

• Adidas (Sambas, Gazelles), New Balances

4. Functional Accessories

• Plushie keychains that connect to your bag, as well as Nuimos which you can find in the parks

• Sunglasses

• Minnie Ears or a Dad Hat

What to Bring:

Whether you’re spending all day in the parks, or having a chill afternoon visit, there are 4 key essential items that I recommend you always have with you!

1. Small Belt Bag or Fanny Pack

I love bringing my Lululemon Belt Bag with me on pretty much every trip. It’s compact enough, yet still fits the essentials (phone, wallet, keys, park tickets, sunglasses, lip gloss, etc.) without having to carry a huge backpack, or a giant bag!

2. Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is KEY. I never go to the parks without my HydroFlask. For my Stanley users, I recommend bringing one that has the flip straw. With this Florida heat, you have to constantly hydrate, there’s a saying that goes “hydrate before you diedrate” & you want to enjoy our day without dehydration. (Water bottles are about $6 in the parks, btw)

3. Digital Camera

I never leave my house without my digicam. If you want to snap the best pics of your memorable day, nothing does it better than a digicam. The proof is in the pictures!

4. Poncho and/or a Small Umbrella

We all know that Florida is prone to the afternoon showers, so being prepped for that is essential. Amazon has some great options that are cheap and are small enough to carry in a small bag! We aren’t gonna let the rain ruin our day.

Tips While You're In The Parks:

Before we get into this, be sure to download the “My Disney Experience” app.

1. Virtual Queues

For rides such as Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind and Tron, you'll need to set up a Virtual Queue in order to ride! The VQ opens up at 7AM! I recommend confirming your party at 6:57, so you can start refreshing with another device at 6:58 (make sure your phones are set to the official naval EST time zone). You will for sure snag a VQ!

If you don’t get one at 7, or if you're Park Hopping, just make sure you’re in the park before 1PM and follow the same steps!

2. Nighttime Spectaculars

If you aren’t interested in watching Disney’s nighttime shows, this is actually the perfect time to get on a couple popular rides! Since the majority of park-goers are watching these shows, popular rides such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Star Wars Rise of the Resistance, are not usually busy at this time!

For those that love watching fireworks, I recommend watching Happily Ever After near the first Castle piece (by the Liberty Square Bridge). For Fantasmic, I love to go during the 2nd showing, since it’s not as busy. Sit in the middle section (best seating, imo), as it's not blocked off, since Dining Packages aren't offered during the 2nd show!

3. Parades

There’s a couple of parades that occur at Magic Kingdom. My recommendation is to watch them in Frontierland, since that’s where they launch. Crowds tend to form near the Castle and Main Street, so Frontierland is a great option. (Bonus: You'll also get a 10-15minute headstart on going on rides again, since people are still watching the show further down the route.)

4. Rides

When it comes to riding the attractions, aside from riding during the Nighttime Spectaculars, I have two major time-saving hacks:

(1) Get on your favorite rides during the lunch rush, meaning between 11am-12:30pm. Lots of families are having lunch, so ride lines won't be as busy! (Opt to have an earlier or later lunch, and you'll thank me later, since the restaurants will also be less packed!)

and (2) Save a ride that typically has a longer wait time for the END of the day! As long as you get in line before the park closes, you'll be able to get on the ride. At this time, there’s no more Lightning Lane, meaning that the standby line will be continuously moving.

I hope that these tips assist in creating the most special day in the parks for you, your friends, and family! Take lots of pictures, eat the best snacks, and most importantly HAVE FUN!

HOW TO HAVE THE ULTIMATE FALL MOVIE MARATHON

Everyone loves to watch movies, but do we all know how to really host an amazing movie marathon? In this guide, I’ll give you step-by-step instructions on how to curate the coziest movie night. It’s time to get comfy, relax a bit, and gear up to watch all your favorite flicks this fall.

STEP ONE

PUT ON SOME COMFY CLOTHES

In order to really get relaxed, you need to put on your comfiest set of PJs. If you're with friends, get some matching pajama sets and get ready to watch all your favorite fall movies.

STEP TWO

SET THE SCENE

Bring out your fluffiest blankets, gather all your pillows, and stock up on the fall-scented candles and decor. With the pumpkin scents and cozy blankets, you’re setting yourself up for success!

STEP THREE

GET ALL YOUR FAVE TREATS

Take some time to bake your favorite sweets! Prepare your fall-themed drinks, like a Pumpkin Spice Latte or Sparkling Apple Juice, & enjoy! (Bonus: I even recommend finding a recipe related to the movie you’re watching, and have a go!)

STEP FOUR

PICK THE

MOVIES

This is personally my favorite step. Set your movie list and watch all of them! Enjoy all your foods, your drinks, and sweet treats! Have a great time by yourself or with your friends and family! Here are some classic movie recommendations that you can watch with friends and family!

All it takes is four easy steps to have the best fall movie marathon. You can find everything you need to have a great time in your home! Have fun and relax, you deserve it! Below I’ll list some great movies that give great fall vibes.

15 Fall Movie Recommendations:

OrlandO Saturday MOrning Bakery Crawl

Do you have an unquenchable sweet tooth? Are you a croissant connoisseur? Well, you’re in luck! Orlando has become a foodie destination in recent years, and for good reason. It hosts a variety of viennoiseries from all over the world. This list is not exclusive, but it features my go-to Saturday morning when I want to eat my emotions in croissants! There are also many new scrumptious shops opening all the time, so keep your eyes peeled for the next iteration of a cronut.

BUTTERMILK BAKERY

First up is Buttermilk Bakery, a small-batch Winter Park bakery that’s been a staple for years. They bake French pastries to perfection, with a menu that changes weekly but includes some staples. If you like savory pastries, try their croissant tart. The pièce de résistance is the Kouign-Amann—a crispy, buttery pastry with sugary layers, offering a perfect balance of melt-in-your-mouth happiness and crunchy sweetness.

LIGHT ON THE SUGAR

A mini history lesson: the French Empire colonized Southeast Asia in the late 1800s, influencing local cuisine. Light on the Sugar fuses Asian ingredients like Ube, Taro, Matcha, and Black Sesame with French pastries. They also offer American flavors like cookies and cream and strawberries. Their ever-changing menu never disappoints. Who knew history and food were so intertwined?

THE SALTY DONUT

Lastly, my first true love: The Salty Donut. From their first shop in Wynwood Miami to Orlando, they offer both savory and sweet baked goods. This Latinoowned bakery creates delicious flavor combinations inspired by its heritage. My favorite is the Toasted Coquito donut—brioche soaked in Coquito and topped with cinnamon meringue. Their 24-hour brioche glazed donut is simply perfect.

Your options are plentiful and sweet, so grab some pastries on a sunny Saturday morning and indulge!

How to Study THE BIBLE

“If I have learned anything this year, it is how powerful it is when two or more gather to study the Word of God and pray.”

One of the first things we’re told when becoming a Christian is to remain in the Word at all times. As 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” To be equipped for what the Lord has for us, we must know Him and His Word. However, it recently was brought to my attention that not many of us know how to study the Bible or even where to start. Some of us may get overwhelmed when we try to sit down and open His Word and end up closing it and choosing to do it later.

But we can’t know God if we don’t know His Word. Studying the Word should be refreshing and delightful, not just another chore. Here are some steps to make it easier to study the Bible, which we must live by daily.

MAKE IT A HABIT

As Christians, we must see the Bible as our blueprint for life, providing answers to any problem we face. Regularly reading His Word equips us for daily life. To form this habit, set a specific time each day, find a distraction-free place, and use a physical Bible to avoid digital distractions. Start small—even a verse a day.

• Set a certain time that you know you’re free every day to study the Word.

• Pick a safe space to study the Word; it can be your car, the park, or the library.

• Pick a destination/time that is free from distractions. For example, don’t study in your bed under the covers because it’ll allow room for you to get tired or fall asleep.

• Get a physical Bible, it can be easy to get distracted or tempted on your phone from social media or messages from friends/family. You’re less likely to be distracted when studying from a physical Bible.

• Start off small. In other words, don’t expect to do full 2 hours of Bible study on your first go, you can start off with a verse-a-day, if needed.

RUN BACK TO THE WORD

Look at King David, who made mistakes but always returned to the Word. He adjusted his life according to

the Bible, not the other way around, changing Israel’s history in the process. Every thought, action, and hardship must submit to God’s authority. No matter our mistakes, we must go back to what the Word says, as it has every solution we’ll ever need.

MORE THAN ONE

If I have learned anything this year, it is how powerful it is when two or more gather to study the Word of God and pray. Studying the Bible with others can be powerful and less overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to gather two or three friends and sit at a park, a coffee shop or even go to the beach and open the Word of God together. They may have clarity on something you’re struggling to understand and vice versa. When the body of Christ comes together to seek Him, it is a beautiful and refreshing thing that often sparks that fire in us to read more of the Bible. You can even do Bible studies over the phone, whether it be Zoom, or FaceTime. Reading the Word can be overwhelming sometimes, but it’s always easier with a friend!

BE WILLING

We can’t expect transformation if we don’t believe in the Word’s power. Like medicine, the Bible must be used correctly to experience its full effect. We miss out when we misuse it. The Bible reveals God to us; to become the people He intended us to be, we must approach it correctly and not expect more when treating it as less.

ASK FOR HELP

One of the things I struggled with last year was understanding the Bible. I felt like I’d read all these amazing Scriptures, but was left feeling confused or not content. After talking to others at church, they expressed that praying with and in the Bible allows us to not only sit in God’s truth, but seek God’s help. If you struggle to understand the Bible, pray for guidance. The Lord wants us to seek His help. A simple prayer, like asking God to open your heart and mind to His Word, can change the outcome of your study. Jeremiah 29:12 reminds us that the Lord listens to those who call on Him.

God doesn’t want us to see His Word as a chore. We should want to be in the Word. Hopefully, these tips will help us understand and incorporate the Word into our daily lives.

FALL IN LOVE WITH READING

I’ve been out of college for quite some time now, as I finished my Master’s in 2017! … so when I felt prompted to take a creative writing course (for no credit, I might add) at UCF last summer, I knew it could only be God. Long story short: somewhere over the years, I had abandoned what I was put on this earth to do: WRITE.

In that class, the instructor challenged us to “read what you like to write,” and it dawned on me: if I want to put stuff out there in this world, I need to first start by engaging with the texts that other authors have already created. And thus, my journey as a bookish boss began! So, I guess you could say: my love for reading is very much atributed to my love for writing.

Soon after, I got an Orange County Library Card, and found myself frequenting the book section of every thrift store in town. 12 months later, I have read 23 books cover-to-cover! While not all of them have been page-turners, I have fallen in love with reading.

With the fall sneaking up, it’s the perfect time to cozy up with a good book as you let the day escape you and journey into a fictional realm over a warm cup of coffee. I’ve curated a few tips, bookstores, and apps to jumpstart your journey:

TIPS:

1. Find a place you like to read! Avoid uninspiring or distracting places. In my home, I’ve deemed a small, well-lit and comfortable, window cut-out in my loft, my “Cozy Corner”.

2. Visit bookstores when you’re traveling. Picking up a book when you’re in another city or country is a fun way to keep memories of your travels. Two of my favorites are: The Strand in NYC and Shakespeare & Co in Paris, France.

3. Don’t judge a book by its cover. This one is an ageold saying for a reason. The cover doesn’t always do the book justice. I’d say, don’t even judge it by the first chapter or two. It often takes me a few chapters to really be invested to the storyline and characters.

ORLANDO BOOKSTORES:

While you can likely find everything your heart desires at big box stores like Barnes & Noble, these independent bookish boutiques have more local reads, curated picks, knowledgeable and friendly staff… and of course, the vibes!

Writer’s Block: With shops in Winter Park & Winter Garden, WB is as quaint as its surroundings. Stay caffeinated while you stroll courtesy of the in-store coffee shop at the WP location.

Authentic Books: A bookstore downtown that appeals to ALL FIVE SENSES, bringing together self-care and immersive bookish experiences.

JoyBird Books: Located in the Audubon Park area, this bookstore is great for finding used books and discovering local authors!

APPS TO DOWNLOAD:

GoodReads: The most popular amongst book-lovers, you can track reading goals, search for new titles, & browse reviews from other readers.

TBR Bookshelf: I was influenced. I downloaded it from an Instagram-ad. It’s similar to GoodReads in features, but lets you view your books on a cute, aesthetically pleasing digital shelf!

Libby: This is a must-have for Library Card holders! You can search thousands of titles, and either place them them on hold or check them out digitally! Books are available to read like an e-reader on your phone or even listen by audio narration.

Little Free Library: Use the app to discover a LFL location near you. It’s a “Take a book, share a book” community project, encouraging literacy across the world! My own neighborhood has one of these small bird-house looking structures, and it’s such a costeffective way to find a new read, or cycle out some of your older books!

Fable: If you want to join an online community of book-lovers, Fable is for you! Join different Book Clubs based on your interests or specific themes, and then read-along and discuss with other readers on forums as you go!

WHY YOU SHOULD GO ON A Mission Trip

When you hear, "mission trip," what comes to mind? Maybe things like: ‘spreading the Gospel,’ or even traveling, fundraising, and hard work. For me, I instantly think of love, excitement, joy, and adventure!

Since 2011, I have attended over 20 mission trips and have never regretted one. I have been to locations like China, Cuba, Costa Rica, Ireland, Spain, Japan, New York, and Los Angeles, just to name a few. Mission trips truly are a one-ofa-kind experience. You are exposed to different cultures and get to experience God in a raw and unique way; you start to recognize His presence in a way that you don't always get to when caught up in the routines of your everyday life. The American Church is very different from how many other countries worship and experience God. One thing that I absolutely love is witnessing firsthand how other cultures encounter God. It is in those moments that I'm reminded that even if our cultures and languages are different, and even though our church pews and brick walls don’t look the same, God is still the same. He sees us and hears us, all the same - no matter our geographical location.

Mission trips allow you to get out of your comfort zone and be stretched by God in new ways as He uses you to share the Gospel and serve others. The Bible teaches us that, “in our weakness, He is made strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9), and if there's anything I know to be true about the mission field, is that it brings out our weakness... which means it also points to His strength.

Every time I go on a mission trip, God reminds me that it is not about my own selfish desires or thinking about myself. We should help others when they are in need of prayer or assistance.

I remember a mission trip I took a few years ago, back in 2022 to the Bahamas. We had fundraised the money to go and help with a construction project. In Abaco, Bahamas, there is an Assemblies of God Youth Camp that had suffered damage from a hurricane. Unfortunately, the camp director and staff did not have the manpower or funds to fix several of the damages to the campgrounds. They had been praying for God to send workers and funding, and we got to be part of God’s answer to their prayers. We were one of a few teams that were able to go and help renovate, fix, and rebuild the campgrounds to be ready for campers to come and experience life change at camp that summer.

For me, this trip was so humbling. Building is something I use in my everyday job here at Faith, but God was able to use my giftings in craftsmanship to bless others! God used that trip to stretch me by opening my eyes to be grateful for all He has blessed me with.

I honestly believe your life would be forever changed, and your character would be refined for the better. Your flesh becomes weak, but your spirit becomes stronger. Your pride is laid down, and your humility is deepened. A mission trip will allow God to use you to minister the Gospel to so many in need, but it will also deepen your love for others and strengthen your relationship with Christ.

Every year during Spring Break, The Voice hosts an at-home mission trip, where we get to love on our city by partnering with local organizations! Keep an eye out for Love Week 2025!

Mainstream Missions will be announcing its 2025 trips later this fall, and I encourage you to already commit to going in your heart because I honestly believe your life will be changed!

Nurtured Love: Stories and Tips from Married couples

C.S Lewis said it best: “To love at all is to be vulnerable."

We have all seen the movies of epic romances and heard down the grapevine of the great loves before us. From meet-cutes to love at first sight, I wanted to take it a step further and dive into some of our very own local love stories paired with practical tips from the ones who've made it.

CONNIE AND JOHNNY MATHEWS

Q: How did you two meet?

CONNIE: "I was working in retail and he was working at a television station. They were doing a holiday broadcast at my store. I saw him and knew that was the guy I was going to marry."

JOHNNY: "I didn't see her when I did my first broadcast. When I went back I saw her and thought, 'Wow she's hot but…'

BOTH: "We were both engaged to other people."

CONNIE: "However, my mom was a prayer warrior and she knew the man I was with wasn't for me, so she prayed and prayed until he was out of my life."

JOHNNY: "At the end of the day, I knew God's will would always prevail."

Speed forward to now, they have been married for 55-anda-half years; dated for 7 months before the great I Do. They have 3 kids, one of whom they lost back in 2020; 2 awesome son-in-loves (as Connie calls them); and 4 grandchildren! They both also serve faithfully here at Faith, overseeing our Legacy Ministry.

Q: What's your favorite thing about your significant other?

JOHNNY: "She's very intelligent, very gifted, and one of the most loving people you will ever meet. She's anointed in everything and the icing on the cake: she is so beautiful."

CONNIE: "Absolutely everything! What's not to love?! He is very kind and caring. Super handsome, but he also loves the Lord more than me and that is what I love."

“But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God..."

- Ruth 1:16-17

Q: "What is key to a successful Christian relationship?"

CONNIE: "Trusting God, but more than trusting God, is listening to God. You can't rely on feelings alone; you must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit to avoid being led by your own desires."

Q: “What’s your best advice on setting boundaries?”

CONNIE: "Allow the recommendations and really listen. I'm a people-person, so sometimes I miss cues. There are some people on this earth who I can't love the way I love without it getting all bundled up. I have to have the ears to listen when he tells me I should set certain boundaries."

JOHNNY: In every relationship, there are differences. You can not major on a minor issue. You have to understand what battles are worth fighting. Don't cause a war that was never needed. Knowing that, will even help when the time comes to have kids.

Q: "How do you handle conflicts?"

JOHNNY: "Talk. If you don't, the conflict never gets resolved. Don't go to bed mad—that's biblical. When there's an issue between husband and wife, the husband has the final word according to Scripture. We talk things through and try to convince each other. If we can't agree, I have to decide, but 90% of the time, I choose her way because most issues are minor. It's important in marriage and dating to understand how to discuss and compromise."

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

• Never ever date somebody you wouldn't marry, if they don't have the qualities of somebody you're looking for in a spouse. It's okay to be selective (but not superficial).

• Practice safe dating. Double dates, triple dates, accountability. As your relationship progresses, temptation comes along.

• You always have an option until you utter the words, "I do."

Maintain good standing with your significant other's family because, at the end of the day, they'll be your family too.

JOEL AND ALEX ASHE

Picture this: Joel walks into The Voice wearing the flyest fit you've ever seen (psst. spoiler alert, it’s a Naruto shirt). Alex notices his shirt and compliments it. “ What do you know about this?” Joel exclaims and then BOOM! She hits Joel with a full explanation of the show. And that ladies and gentlemen is where it all started… Fast forward to now! They have been together for a total of 6 years, currently married with a beautiful baby girl, both serving faithfully here on staff at Faith.

Q: What's your favorite thing about your significant other?

PASTOR JOEL: "She's supportive no matter the circumstance. When I don't have enough faith for a certain

situation, she really comes in and pushes me. She has enough faith for the both of us. She is super kind and has this Jedi-like ability to read people."

ALEX: "His ability to take charge in a situation. He really is a leader, just the absolute man of the home, always providing in every aspect."

Q: "What is key to a successful Christian relationship?":

BOTH: "Communication is important. Make sure you're open and understand each other's styles because everyone is different. Accountability is also crucial, even in marriage. Be honest with your emotions—marriage is a lifetime commitment, and you don't want to end in divorce because you weren't honest."

Something C.S Lewis said that's good is, 'don't sacrifice your conscience on the altar of love'."

“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be a blessing for the man who fears the Lord.”

- Psalm 128:3-4

Q: “What’s your best advice on setting boundaries?”

BOTH: "Be very clear about your boundaries, and explain why you have them. Write them down so you guys can revisit them."

PASTOR JOEL: “I had more physical boundaries, whereas Alex had emotional ones too."

ALEX: “There were certain conversations we couldn't entertain until we were at that place in the relationship like marriage etc. because of the boundaries I had placed up”

BOTH: "Letting your accountability know what your boundaries are is also something we implemented and recommend. Never be afraid to revisit your boundaries and reinforce them if you guys ever get too close to breaking one. It's always good to just check up with one another."

Q: "How do you handle conflicts?"

"Know that people deal with things differently. You have to learn to adapt to how the other person deals with situations. For us, we had to have a lot of grace and space – allowing each other the time to process rather than dealing with it right at that current moment. You have to be super understanding when things arise knowing that every relationship has conflict. Contrary to popular belief, conflict is not a bad thing. It allows space to grow. 'How can I win if it means the person I love loses?' We think, 'How we can reconcile so that we come out of this unified?'"

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

• Be honest with your emotions.

• Don't take everything so seriously, laugh, and have fun with each other.

• Make sure you like the person for who they are not what they can be or what they bring.

• Pray for God to show you any red flags.

WHAT THE ARMY TAUGHT ME ABOUT LIFE

"I, (insert name) , do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

“So help me God”.. that’s exactly what was going through my mind when I swore in to become a soldier. Endless emotions began flooding in that moment… excitement, doubt, fear, anxiety, you name it. I remember going back to the hotel that night questioning whether I was doing the right thing..but it wasn’t until I prepared to rest that night that I remembered something my grandma always told me when I was growing up, “The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.” It was at that moment I knew that the Lord had reminded me that no matter where I went or where he’d send me that he’d be right beside me every step of the way.

Funny enough when I swore in it also reminded me of the time I accepted Jesus into my life. I remember feeling those similar emotions yet there was this sense of relief and peace that I never understood until later on in life. Different pivotal moments but both required faith, discipline, and perseverance.

For some reason, you may not necessarily be enlisted but you are a part of something greater. Not the US Army but God’s Army. In this article, I will be sharing personal experiences and disciplines that have equipped me to better represent the Faith during my time serving. With that being said? LET’S MARCH!

1. FOLLOW THE COMMAND:

When we receive orders we shouldn’t hesitate to act on them. If we delay the command or don’t act at all we risk the enemy gaining leverage on us. We must trust our leadership and go where we are called. Obedience leads to victory!

2. DON’T FORGET YOUR GEAR:

Stay equipped with the right resources. Just like in war we constantly need to be prepared for anything and so should you! It can be as simple as keeping a Bible with you, having a worship playlist, alarms for prayer/devo time, etc. (Can’t go wrong with anointing oil too!)

3. FORM ALLIANCES:

Build a trustworthy community! Deployment often feels very lonely and sometimes it can be the same with our day-to-day walk in life but you don’t have to walk into battle alone. With the right allies and friendships, you will be able to overcome obstacles together. Iron sharpens iron.

4. ENGAGE IN COMBAT:

We can’t hide in the shadows! We developed and honed our skills during prayer and in the Word to fight back the enemy. Utilize the gifts and talents God has given you to spread his word. Whether that be through a Bible Study, worship, or as simple as sharing your testimony. The world calls us to camouflage, but the Lord has called us to combat.

5. HOLD YOUR GROUND:

We can’t give up. Life is tough and there are going to be PLENTY of battles we’ll lose along the way or feel impossible to win but we have to remember the war has already been won. We must choose to fight daily and rejoice that we have the greatest ally on our side. Jesus Christ.

Q&

AQ: Is it hard to evangelize in the military?

In my time serving I’ve had countless questions of what it’s like being a Christian in the Army. I’ve curated a few of these questions to give you some perspective and challenges of what I’ve had to face during my journey:

Q: How has your experience in discipline led to how you lead at church?

A: "It has taught me to have a balanced routine when it comes to planning, being on time, and stewarding the things that I am responsible for."

Q: What was the hardest part about deployment? What was the best part?

A: "Hardest was probably the holidays without my loved ones & lack of the church community. Christianity is not very popular overseas and we’re limited on how much we can verbally talk about it during work hours. Best part was definitely seeing Kuwait for the culture & the free food and gym access."

A: "Yes. When it comes to religion and politics it’s not ideal to talk about those things. Also a handful of people either don’t have a relationship at all or think they’re too far gone to have a relationship with Jesus. Thankfully the Lord allowed divine appointments in the right place and right time for me to have those conversations with certain people."

Q: What do you think is the best way to spread the gospel to the soldiers?

A: "Sounds super simple but..loving on them. Love goes such a long way because a lot of soldiers come from broken homes, don’t have family, or have never experienced selfless love. Believe it or not, sometimes all people need is an ear to listen to and a shoulder to cry on. In that, I was able to build multiple relationships with trust and eventually, it allowed them to be vulnerable with me in certain situations and lead me to pray for them or even open conversations about Jesus."

Q: What is one thing you wish you did differently while being deployed?

A: "Intentionality. I remember coming back home and feeling like a ghost in a crowd full of people, feeling bitter and thinking no one cared I was gone. In all reality, I didn’t invest in the relationships I had while I was away and it led me to victimizing myself. I realized it wasn’t about me and that being intentional goes BOTH ways. I also wish I would have been more intentional with my time and how much of it I spent in the Word and with the Lord vs. the gym, social media, video games, etc. No, those things aren’t necessarily evil, but there needs to be a balance and I did not have that.

DropsCounted

Lord, in my hour of need, I know you see me. in the tears I shed behind closed doors, you count every drop.

Even when I think I could not be more alone, you show me what a friend I have in you.

When I gave you every reason to turn your back on me, I sought you and found you with open arms.

Help me, my rock and my savior, for when you seek me in return. just how you longingly embraced me, may my back not be turned to that embrace.

Psalms 139: 7-10

DEFENDING YOUR Faith

When you think of the idea of “Defending your Faith,” does your mind immediately go to two people having an intense theological argument? Or do you maybe imagine a scenario where you are surrounded by people shouting insults toward you and you have to defend the name of Jesus and Christian faith?

If either of these situations sounds slightly concerning to you, don’t worry… 99% of the time this is not what defending your faith looks like. If you were maybe excited with the idea of being attacked and publicly debated like a scene out of God’s Not Dead… I hate to disappoint, but Defending Your Faith is much more practice and often far less dramatic than this.

Aside from the possible 1% mentioned above, 99% of the time Defending Your Faith just looks like being able to articulately explain your belief in Jesus, why you believe it, and provide evidence on His Life, Death, and Resurrection. Sounds easy enough?

Try answering these 4 questions (without any help) and see how ready you are to DYF:

1. Who was Jesus Christ and what did He do while he was here on earth?

2. Without using the Bible, what evidence do you have that Jesus’ life actually happened?

3. Without using the Bible, what evidence do you have that Jesus’ death and resurrection actually happened?

4. How can we trust the truth and claims of the Bible, if it's a 12,000-year-old book translated multiple times?

These questions are essentially the foundation of Defending Your Faith, being able to explain your faith. If any of these seemed intimidating or maybe difficult to answer, don’t worry there are plenty of answers in books, videos, and podcasts of people much smarter than me explaining how to concisely and appropriately answer all of these questions.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Following Up With First Time Guests

“Growing up in church, I believed in God, but I never really understood that the whole point is to know God and to establish a personal connection with Him. It took a long time in the world, and for it to come crashing down, to recognize how I needed God during a divine appointment. Nobody invited me to The Voice, I just showed up in February and decided it was, “cool enough” to come back the next week. It became the highlight of my week. I really just wanted friends and I have found that community here. I just put myself out there and started going to Cadences and H2O classes. Thankfully, not only has H2O provided that, but it is also teaching me how to really commune with God. He wants to spend time with me, and it pleases Him when I do! As I enter Graduate School and am intimidated by its cost, God has been telling me that He’s got my back. I’ve truly learned how to hear His voice, and have our relationship as the main source of joy in my life!”

“In the beginning of April, I came to The Voice. My first experience was nerveracking, and I felt out of place, wanting to hide. It took until the first 5 minutes of service for that fear to go away. Even though I didn’t know much about Jesus, He touched me that night and that is when I chose to believe in Him. In the past 3 months, Jesus has opened opportunities for a new life here in Orlando, providing a local job, the space to call home, and the community to feel safe. I have been able to join groups at church (Cadences) and create friendships and memories for a lifetime. I believe within all the chaos of my life, God reached out to give me strength through these acts of kindness and He continues to lead me daily!”

“Prior to coming to The Voice, I had reached a crossroads of continuing to live or not at all, not having a care for anyone... including myself. I was loving towards others, but lacked that love for myself. If I wanted to not speak the way I spoke to myself daily to others, I needed to surrender to Him to start my journey of healing. Then, on a random Thursday night, I was invited to come to The Voice by a close friend.... that was the FIRST ‘Yes’ that I gave to God without hesitation. Saying YES was me finally being caught in His hands. From free falling for so many years, I felt God saying, ‘I got you.’ And with that was a new spirit with purpose, a community that uplifts me and encourages me to walk the narrow road, and a relationship with a God who is madly in love with me.”

IS THERE SPACE FOR MY VOICE?

GRACE

HOW TO ALLOW GOD TO CREATE A SPACE FOR YOU.

Do you know what God’s will is for your life? Have you figured out what you’re “called to” yet? No? Then this article is for you. In a world where the words “destiny” and “calling” hold incredible weight, how can we discern if the space you occupy is the precise place that God has destined you to be in? This becomes particularly difficult if those around you feel called to work in full-time ministry. The deep desire to belong might deceive you into thinking that ministerial effectiveness is linked to a title like Pastor, Evangelist, or Missionary. I submit that this idea is the enemy’s plan to ensnare you into believing that you are lacking. The Biblical narrative contradicts this idea furiously. Nowhere in the Bible does it say we must all hold offices within the church to fulfill the Great Commission. The Great Commission is simple because the act of reaching the lost will always take on many different iterations.

What does that mean for you? It means that whether you’re called to full-time ministry or a different vocation, you can be effective. Fulfillment of the Great Commission, and doing God’s will, is not about titles but our willingness to submit to God. When we submit what we

have to God, He creates space for us to show off His creation, which is you and your talents. Yet too often we become fearful and choose to manipulate our resources to reach our goals, deceiving ourselves into believing that God is a selfish God. The truth is that we are the selfish ones, denying our loving Father that which He has blessed us with.

In reality, the majority of people aren’t called to be in full-time ministry, but we are all called to be full-time followers of Christ – this is the call none of us should run from. Let me give you some personal context. I am a teacher who enjoys writing, feels called to missions, and whose closest friends and brother are in full-time ministry. In all my roles, I get to minister to different people groups without being in full-time ministry. God has created a space for you to show others His love and share His gospel. He’ll give you opportunities to use your talents to do exactly this.

Recently, we wrote a short film together, which was filmed as part of Alejandro Gomez’s capstone project as a Senior in film school. The opportunity I had to collaborate on this project came as a result of

SPACE VOICE?

obedience and submission. My objective in going on a mission trip or joining Pastoring Team was to submit myself to God and be expectant of His next move. This project aimed to communicate the hope that we have in God using a secular vehicle. Every word used in the script was intentionally chosen so that they would honor God. Ideas were prayed over, and the hope is that everyone tied to the project sees God in us and everything we do.

ALEJANDRO

As a Director, Producer, and Filmmaker, making sure I walk like Christ and love people like Him is extremely important, especially in the entertainment world. Any little thing can be used against you, especially as a Christian, because we are held to a higher standard. Saying YES to God and being obedient to my calling to be a filmmaker and working in the secular industry was a hard YES, for many reasons. Our job as disciples of Christ is to be obedient and say YES, and everything else will fall into place. God will take control of everything else, guide us through it, and most importantly, give us peace and joy in it.

For example, as soon as I said Yes to filmmaking, God opened so many doors back to back, showing me that He makes up for any lost time when we delay our obedience because His timing is perfect. As a director, producer, or filmmaker, I make sure to love the people on my crew or cast. It is my job that we reflect God through the project, but also on the people working on the project.

Before we begin any day, I make sure to pray together and thank God for the opportunities He has given us and help guide everyone through the project. Throughout the day, I make sure everyone is having fun and enjoying their work because if they're doing what they love to do, they should be having a good time and feeling joy while doing it. Just by being there for my crew or cast, showing that I care for them and love them, many of them start to thank me and then ask me why I do things the way I do. Those conversations always lead back to the love of Christ and how we as Christians are truly supposed to treat those around us, regardless of how they look, act, and believe. Everywhere we go, our primary role is to share God’s love. Any job we do, we should be doing it unto

Christ and showing love to those around us. Colossians 3:23-24 says it clearly. Sometimes we can forget about celebrities, actors, crew, coworkers, or even bosses because either we work with them every day and just get comfortable with them or we don’t put our mind to it and brush past it. Those are the people we should be helping lead and share Christ and His love with them. We should be representing Christ wherever we are or wherever we work. It’s important that while we’re in the world we do not become a part of it. We must never compromise or conform to their ways, but we must remain strong in our beliefs and values

Whether full-time vocational ministry is your calling or whether you’re called to work in a secular space, the truth remains, we’re all called to surrender our life to God. We must ferociously fight the lies of the enemy and the entrapment of culture. Commit yourself to the hands of God so that your creations might reflect His handiwork. May you always be compelled to give your ashes to Christ so that He may be the ultimate creator of beauty in your life.
