ust recently I have noticed a few new shops appearing on the High Streets, let’s hope this means that things are looking brighter, it’s a shame the same can’t be said for the weather. As I write this and listen to the weather report, I can hear the words; ‘unusually cold for the time of year’, I remember a trip to Devon last Easter, it was a cold and wet weekend so perhaps this is not so unusual and something we just need to get used too?

Plus lots more - Happy reading

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with

a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service Kingswinford, Wordsley and Wall Heath areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of

business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

We all know the importance of a good password, but making a secure password is actually harder than you think.

Most email accounts are hacked in to by using a dictionary based attack, the trick to avoid this is not using a dictionary word! Simply adding numbers before or after your word is not adequate either. Should I use one password for all accounts?

Yes, you can if the password is good enough; I personally have one password for everything. It is easy to remember 3 years after creating the account! What is a weak password?

Any single word that is in a dictionary, or any single word with a number before or after your word e.g. john1948, harold1, 28andrew What is a strong password?

You can replace letters with numbers, 1 for L, 8 or 5 for S. You should also make use of capital letters, and special characters e.g. Ja5@n1948, m1chAe1, Barn5yTheD0g, Wi11iaM

Once an attacker has your email address or username, they use a special program that tries to log in to your account, it simply uses different words and number combinations, until either the password is broken or the end of the dictionary is reached, in which case they simply move on to the next account. THE BLACK COUNTRY ALBUM Retired press photographer Graham Gough has released a collection of his most striking images taken in the Black Country and Worcestershire since the 1950’s.

He has captured on camera everything from historic events to extreme weather to Royal visits and riots during his lengthy career as a photographer working on newspapers in the Midlands and in the West Country.

Graham Gough

And to mark more than half a century behind the lens, he has published a selection of images taken during his time in the Black Country in a new book “The Black Country Album-50 years of events, people and Places”.

The glossy publiction features a selection of black and white images of people, places and visits by Royalty, Politicians and celebrities including Princess Anne, The Queen, Cilla Black, Glenda Jackson, Hugh Grant, Jeffrey Archer, Tony Blair and two rarely seen pictures of Lenny Henry when he was at School and in The Black and White Minstrel Show. Graham retired from press photography in 2000 and these days concentrates on landscapes and illustrations for books and magazines.

“All human life is in this book, its not Fifty Shades of Grey, its Fifty Shades of the Black Country,” says Graham.

GARDEN

S.O.S A

s I walk around our village I inevitably notice all the front gardens that I pass by. Due perhaps to the rather inclement weather of the last few months, it has been apparent recently that quite a few were in need of some tender loving care. The winter has not been very kind to gardens, or gardeners for that matter, but now is the time to put all that behind us and recreate a beautiful and welcoming space.

Let's start with the lawn. The prolonged wet spells of weather have leached all the nutrients from our lawns and these conditions have been perfect for the growth of moss. A scarifier will remove most of the moss, or if you are feeling very energetic, then a moss rake will do. It is impossible to remove every bit moss so it is a good idea to apply a proprietary moss-killer after treatment. I prefer then to wait until May when the grass (and weeds) are growing vigorously before I apply a full 'Weed and Feed' treatment. In the first instance however, just trim both your lawn and the edges and your front garden will immediately look much better. Now to the borders. If you haven't already trimmed back all of the dead stems from last year, get this done first. Prune any roses and summer flowering shrubs to encourage new growth, and apply a general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone to all of the borders, taking care not to get fertiliser on any new growth, and then lightly work this into the soil. This is also a good time to fill any gaps in your borders

14

By Philip Baulk Head Gardener of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

and replace anything that is no longer fit for purpose. Garden centres and nurseries are just bursting with lovely plants at this time of year and you will be spoilt for choice. If hedges were not trimmed in the autumn, then this too can be attended to now.

Lastly, look at all your pots and containers. If these weren't planted up in the autumn, there is still just enough time to plant these up with some pansies or polyanthus which you can get from your garden centre just coming into flower. They will not be as floriferous overall as those planted in the autumn, but they will give you some instant colour for the spring season. Don't forget the drive. It doesn't look good if it is full of moss or weeds. Brick drives are the hardest to weed and often it is a hands and knees job. You can do a quicker job with a path weedkiller but be careful not to let it stray onto your plants. Gravel may not make the best driveway, but they are generally much easier to weed, but for my drive, I chose tarmac which for now does not have a weed problem. All this may seem like a lot of hard work, but pick a fine weekend and just see what you can get done. You may even enjoy this time in the fresh air with some gentle exercise. After all our front garden does create the first impression when visitors call and if it is neat and tidy and also has some colourful flowers in it, it is also bound to be noticed by everyone who passes by.

Happy Gardening

Whether you arrive by car, train (Arley Station is one of the stops on the 16 mile route of the Severn Valley Railway), canoe or on foot, having enjoyed the 4 mile ‘Upper Arley Circular Walk’ to work up your appetite, owners Jocelyn and Peter invite you to sit back, relax and take time to enjoy village life.

Jocelyn & Peters philosophy is simple: Enter as strangers and leave as friends, everyone is welcome.

Arley village is very easy to find. It can be found just 3 miles outside of Kidderminster on the Bridgnorth Road, the A442. Look for the crossroads by the ‘Bellman's Cross Inn’ and follow the sign for Upper Arley, along Arley Lane, passing through Shatterford, you descend towards the village. Car parking is available on the quay or by following the signs to the riverside public car park. Public toilets are available adjacent to the public car park.

Following three sell out West End seasons and rave reviews, YES, PRIME MINISTER is fast becoming the most successful play for a decade.

The original writers of the classic BBC TV Series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production with a new satirical take on Whitehall. Bernard Matus (Lend Me A Tenor) will join the cast as Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley. Call the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre Box Office on 01902 42 92 12 Recommended Age: 16+

Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club

Vice Chairman Jean Corns, Peter Shelley & Chairman Mary Jones

Chairman Mary Jones welcomed 38 members to the March meeting of ‘Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club’ to hear from speaker Mr Peter Shelley about ‘A Handful of Straw’.

Mr Shelley, whose interest in Corn Dollies began in 1974, learnt the art from Lettice Sanford from Ludlow. He began by demonstrating how to make a Corn Dolly. Corn Dollies are made each harvest time and are believed to preserve the fertility of the land. He then passed around glory braids used to decorate church pews, cornucopia, horseshoes, crosses, Christmas angels, pictures, a horse and doll. He talked about his travels to Russia and Minsk where straw art is highly valued unlike in this country where it has no value at all. This artistic man was delightful and held everyone's attention and admiration.

Pauline Handley issued the new programme for 2013/14 which features a range of different speakers and entertainment. A coach outing to Stratford is booked for June and a coffee morning at the home of Ann and Mike Rogers will take place in August.

Best wishes went to retiring President Elsie Billingsley and a warm welcome extended to the new President Jean Corns.

Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month, 12 pm for 12.30 pm departing at 3 pm. Visitors are most welcome. For more information about this friendly club ring the Secretary on 01902 372984.

SPRING CLEAN and turn your TRASH INTO CASH No matter how junky you think an item is, consider this truth:

Someone somewhere will probably pay for it. One of the best parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter that you no longer need. While we may have a tendency to hoard and hold on to items in the winter, we generally are more ready to let go of clutter when spring arrives, cleaning will be a lot easier when the clutter is gone. DE-CLUTTER Begin with four boxes or containers and label them: 1. 2. 3. 4.

RUBBISH PUT AWAY STORE SELL OR GIVE AWAY

RUBBISH BOX This should include any item that you do not need or want, but that is not worth donating or selling. Damaged and broken items should be included in the rubbish box if they are not worth being repaired.

PUT AWAY BOX Only for items that need to be out on a regular basis. Make sure you have a place for each item. If the items in this box will not fit into your home without cluttering an area up, try to reassess if you really need them.

STORAGE BOX Put items in here that you cannot part with but do not need on a regular basis. Make a list of these items. Group similar items together. Remember one good way to clean out wardrobes is to store winter clothing.

MARY STEVENS HOSPICE SHOP KINVER We are in need of donated goods to sell, so please show your support for Mary Stevens Hospice?

SELL OR GIVEAWAY BOX Consider the financial benefits of selling your stuff at a carboot sale or online. You can sell your unwanted items using an online auction such as Ebay or by going to a Car Boot Sale; You may be amazed at what people will buy. Something that you no longer have any use for and think of as junk can be someone else’s treasure. Items which are in good condition and have useful life left in them are all good to sell.

If you would prefer to giveaway your unwanted items you can take them to your local Charity shop. Charity shops are always on the lookout for lovely things, some even offer a collection service if you are unable to drop off your donated items.

If you haven't used something for over a year, you probably won’t!

Bikers invited to start the season off in style

There will be workshops running all day offering talks into advanced riding, biker first aid, maintenance checks and a talk from Mark Hayes, Paramedic Biker from Channel 5's Emergency Bikers. Visitors can also explore various training opportunities that will be on offer, including free assessed ride outs from both IAM and RoSPA. Displays in the main arena will be going on throughout the day, including an opportunity to meet the crew of Helimed03 Air Ambulance, along with live music and refreshments. The RAF Museum will also be open to visitors. PC Mick Sturland from West Mercia Police says:

Bikers from Shropshire and the wider Midlands area are invited to start the season off in style on Sunday 21st April 2013.

A combined ‘Bike Fest’ and ‘Bike 4 Life’ event is being held at RAF Museum Cosford in support for two local charities - the Midlands Air Ambulance and Royal Air Force Museum. The two events are joining forces for the first time this year to provide bikers with the opportunity to attend the Bike 4 Life ride out but also spend time at the RAF Museum afterwards with Bike Fest. This biker event will feature various trade stands, bike dealers, arena displays, live music and the chance to have an assessed ride out from the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists (IAM) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The ‘Bike 4 Life’ ride out will start at Meole Brace Park & Ride in Shrewsbury. Bikers are invited to gather from 10am where they will be able to grab a nice warm coffee and a bacon bap before setting off. With bikers already signing up, organisers are expecting thousands will show their support on the day and join in the fun.

The ride out will travel on mass along the M54 motorway to the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, where Bike Fest will be in full swing. The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia has joined up with West Mercia Police, IAM and RoSPA, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and Shropshire Council to organise the Fest, which will also be attended by VIP’s from the biker world.

“It promises to be a great day out for riders. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about buying a bike, just getting started, or have been riding for years and are an experienced biker there will be something there for everyone. Put the 21st April in your diary now so you don’t miss the event!”

Entry to the ‘Bike 4 Life Fest’ is free for visitors and is open from 10am – 4pm. Bikers wishing to participate in the ride out are asked to register in advance by emailing bike4lifefest@rafmuseum.org or call the Museum on 01902 376200. Riders will be asked to make a donation on the day for the two local charities.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the running costs of each charity. Midlands Air Ambulance needs in excess of £6million every year to operate and receives no government or national lottery funding. The RAF Museum Cosford proudly hosts a world class collection and funds raised will go towards the upkeep of the exhibits.
