“A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME....”

by Martin Blow of Special Perennials Why do we name plants? Moreover, why do we so often name plants after people?

Sometimes it is to honour, remember or commemorate someone we love or respect.

Sometimes (say it quietly) it’s pure commercialism: girl’s names sell plants.

Which Achillea would you go for sight unseen: “Walther Funke” or “Pretty Belinda”!

Sometimes this goes too far and an established plant like Hesperantha “Wilfred H. Bryant” gets renamed to “Pink Princess” to kickstart sales.

I

met a gardener at a fair once who told me she always threw away labels and replaced them with the name of the person she got it from, or a friend she was thinking of at the time. A lovely thought and a practice that has possibly led to multiple names from plants entering nursery lists when these plants are passed on. Aster “Connie” and Phlox “Trevor” come to mind as possibilities.

We also get enquiries from people for plants with specific names not just for birthdays or commemorations but also to satisfy a growing trend (pun unintended) of planting “family borders”. A couple contacted us last year looking for Rebecca and William to “complete the grandchildren section” of a new garden. We were able to oblige with Monarda Rebecca but draw a blank on William in our lists.

We used to have Violas “Martin” and “Janet” growing happily next to each other but unfortunately “Janet” didn’t stand the pace – nothing like the real world I must add!

Looking through our list of nursery stock and plants in our garden we have a veritable choir of girls and boys to choose from, but I would say there’s room for some flowers with more modern names in the list.

Here’s a few of my favourites – I hope the descriptions do justice to the names!

Elegant is the word for Veronicastrum “Erica”: she is tall, upright and clothed with spires of pink flowers. Whereas mischievous is the nicest word I can find to describe the rampantly invasive Helianthus “Miss Melish”.

Sisyrinchium “Aunt May” doesn’t really like being left out in a cold, wet garden in winter and a lot of books state that Geum “Lady Stratheden” catches cold easily. There should be no such trouble with Rudbeckia “Little Henry” who is a tough chap.

Phlox are beautiful and dare I say, “girlie” flowers so it is no surprise that there is a complete chorus line of them and only a few boys. Looking at my garden list we have phloxes: “Anne”, “Becky Towe” (named after a Labrador apparently), “Charlotte”, “Delilah”, “Elizabeth Arden”, “Katherine”, “Jade”, “Little Laura” (possibly a cheeky rename of “Uspekh”), “Maude Stella Dagley”, Misses: Jessica, Jill, Mary, Margie and Kelly; “Monica Lynden Bell” and “Nicky” (definitely a rename of the not so easy to remember “Düsterlohe”). For the boys I can see just “David”, “Luc’s Lilac” and the enigmatic “Mister X”.

In contrast Kniphofia (Pokers) are undoubtedly “man plants” but there are plenty of girls among the names: “Jenny Bloom”; “Nancy’s Red” to name a few. The boys include “John Benary”, “Percy’s Pride” and “Timothy”.

Heleniums are commonly given proper names and perhaps suit the person: “Vicky” is tall and brash; “Tom” is short and unassuming; “Betty” pretty and dependable; “Carmen” clothed with flowers; “Chelsey” modern and fashionable; “Luc” long-lasting; “Margot” a head-turner and “Sophie” a lady in red.

It’s nice to meet people associated with the names of plants. I met a colleague of “Eva Cullum” (phlox) who worked with Eva at Bressingham nursery but who herself sadly had no plant named for her by the Blooms.

A while ago I got a phone call from a lady wanting to buy Leucanthemum “Marion Bilsland”. When I asked her for her name she replied “Marion Bilsland”. Her grandfather, a head gardener by trade bred new varieties of Aster and Leucanthemum as a hobby and she had never realised he had named one for her when she was a baby.

Famous Classical Guitarist to perform in Kinver

aybe it’s the unmistakable romance of the classical guitar… maybe it’s the drama and colours of Spain that are so often evoked in the music… or maybe it’s just the beauty of the tone a nylonstring instrument produces… Whatever it is that makes us love it so much, the sound of a classical guitar is one that always inspires romance, and the music of this instrument continues to gain popularity with audiences across the world.

Building upon the foundations laid down by legends of the instrument such as Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream and John Williams, there is a new group of young classical guitarists who continue to make waves across the UK. One of these players, acknowledged as “A forerunner in the new generation of classical guitarists” ( (BBC Radio 3) and a graduate of the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, is Michael Christian Durrant.

Having grown up in Kinver, Michael studied classical guitar as a private student of Maestro Carlos Bonell at the RCM before being awarded a full scholarship to study as a postgraduate student at the College.

Michael will be returning to Kinver on Saturday 4th May 2019 for a special evening recital in the beautiful setting of St. Peter’s Church with a programme of music including pieces by Claude Debussy, Joaquín Rodrigo and Isaac Albéniz. They can pursue their hobbies, take more holidays and spend more time with their family and friends. When people have regrets, it’s often to do with the way they planned for their retirement and the decisions they did or didn’t take about their finances whilst there was still time.

Keeping a regular eye on how much you’re saving towards your pension will ensure that you know how much you’re likely to have when you retire and give you the chance to increase your contributions if you can afford to. The personal allowance will increase from £11850 to £12500 in April 2019, a year earlier than originally planned. The threshold for paying higher rate tax will also rise from £46350 to £50000 in 2019-20.

The annual ISA limit of £20000 remains unchanged for 2019-20.

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY'S

BIKE4LIFE RIDE OUT AND FESTIVAL SUNDAY 28TH APRIL 2019 Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s Bike4Life Ride Out and Festival is one of the biggest biker events in the country, attracting nearly 10,000 bikers. Starting from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury, the Ride Out takes you on a 23 mile route to RAF Cosford. ormer World Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson and twelve times FIM Trial World Champion Dougie Lampkin, will be leading the Bike4Life Ride Out, alongside fellow former World Superbike champion, Carl Fogarty and motorcycle and truck racing legend, Steve Parrish.

The biking legends will each be riding a CCM Spitfire motorcycle to take part in the 23-mile Ride Out, to raise funds for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Last year, £87,770 was raised at Bike4Life, funding 35 lifesaving missions.

Neil, BT Sport MotoGP presenter and two time British Superbike Champion, said: “I’m really looking forward to taking part in my first ever Bike4Life, and can’t wait to see what the event is all about. It has a huge national following, and it’s going to be fantastic to get involved and help raise money for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.”

Dougie, who was recently announced as Bike4Life partner CCM Motorcycles’ new brand ambassador, said: “This event is not only for a fantastic cause, but also is an opportunity for so many motorcycle lovers to come together for a day dedicated to biking. I’m so excited to get involved in what looks to be a great event.”

“Sadly, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity airlifts a biker every four days on average, so this event is not only a way for us to raise funds, but also raises awareness of biker safety.”

“Places in the Ride Out are limited to 3,500, so we’re urging people to secure their place ASAP to avoid disappointment.”
