PICK YOUR PERFECT PLANT at Plant Hunters’ Fairs Spring is in the air and it's time to get out in the garden and get planning and planting for the year ahead and where better to get inspiration than at a Plant Hunters' Fair.
fter our first, very successful plant fair at Sandwell Valley Country Park last year we are returning on Saturday 13th April from 10am-4pm. Last year’s event was a great success with hundreds of garden lovers enjoying the chance to choose from thousands of plants all lovingly grown by the specialist nurseries who are on hand again to give honest, straightforward advice on choosing and growing the right plants for your garden. There will be 22 specialist nurseries and artisans from across the country at this stunning location. At the same time why not enjoy a walk at this wonderful Country Park. The plant fair and country park are free to enter (there is a small parking charge). Sandwell Valley Country Park is just one mile from West Bromwich town centre – use postcode B71 4BG

On Saturday 20th April (Easter Saturday) Plant Hunters Fair’s return to the wonderful setting of Bodenham Arboretum. Easter is a great time for getting down to some gardening and those purchases can go straight into the garden! This plant fair has become a magnet for plant lovers from near and far and there is a great line-up of nurseries to create a plant lover's paradise. It’s completely free to enter the plant fair which is held just next to the main arboretum entrance. There’s also ample free parking, so you can pop in for some plants and visit the restaurant for a cuppa without breaking the bank. The fair runs from 10am-4pm and is on hard standing so there’s no need to worry if the weather is wet! Bodenham Arboretum is situated between the A442 and A449 – use postcode DY11 5TB If you are looking for a great value day out this Early May Bank Holiday Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May. Then look no further than a visit to the wonderful Weston Park and its Plant Hunters' Fair. There is so much to see and do with formal gardens and woodland walks planted with spring bulbs, bluebells, azaleas and rhododendrons. There is also a brilliant adventure playground for children. PENSIONS – THERE’S GOOD NEWS! by JPA Financial Services Ltd Many commentators had predicted that the Chancellor would announce major changes to pension tax relief in his 2018 Autumn Budget. However, this wasn’t the case. Other than the raising of the Lifetime Allowance in line with the Consumer Price Index to £1055000 for the 2019 – 20 tax year, the rules surrounding pensions remain the same.

MELLOW YELLOW by Martin Blow of Special Perennials Many gardeners I talk to think of yellow as a spring colour epitomised by drifts of daffs nodding in the March and April sunshine. But yellow is a colour for every season and there’s something different and unusual to light up each month in the calendar.
By March more Narcissus are blooming including the dainty hooped petticoat (Narcissus bulbocodium) and Cyclamenflowered (Narcissus cyclamineus). These are good in the rockery or naturalised in short grass.

and rarely clashing which is why I call it mellow yellow. Having said that, you do have to take some care selecting the shade of yellow: mustard and pink is a bit to strident but tone the yellow down to pale primrose and all is harmonious.
One of my favourite bog or water’s edge flowers, the Marsh Marigold (Caltha pulustris) is in full bloom in April creating stunning bursts of sunshine yellow in areas that are largely devoid of colour at that time. The large open flowers are a valuable good source for bees at this time. Also blooming in April is the Leopard’s Bane (Doronicum), one of the early flowering plants of the daisy family. Unlike the marsh marigold these spreading plants prefer good drainage.
And it’s not just flowers that bring sunny yellow into the garden; there’s plenty of yellow-leafed plants as well. Here’s a month-by-month selection of yellow flowers and foliage. In our garden the year is heralded in by the opening of yellow catkins on our hazel hedge. During January on still, sunny days the slightest breeze causes clouds of pollen to erupt from the dangling male lamb’s tails. The female flowers are tiny and red and nestled close to the twigs. February sees the first daffs open, usually the dwarf types like February Gold and yellow crocuses are also unfurling in the grass.

Come May and there are so many yellow flowers to choose from so I’m going to begin with an orange flowered one! Geum Eos has bright orange flowers but before these open the spring foliage is bright yellow, nearly golden and this is as it’s best in May. By summer the leaves have turned limy green. At this time as well, Hosta leaves are unfurling and many variegated ones have pristine leaves with patches and stripes of yellow.

As spring slips into the long days of summer in June Evening Primroses are opening up their silk-like petals for just one evening, night and early morning each. I love the pale yellow Lemon Sunset and the deeper Apricot Delight. These are short-lived perennials that do self-seed a bit but however lovely the flowers the taller wild ones (Oenothera biennis) seed far too much to be welcome in the garden. A word also for the common yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia) that are covered with spires of yellow flowers at this time. These are often recommended as bog plants where they frighteningly invasive. On the other hand, place them in dry, difficult soils and they survive, flower brilliantly and are slow to spread. July is prime time for our collections of helenium and day lily, but I’ve talked about them in detail before, so I thought I’d mention another daisy flower: dyer's chamomile (anthemis tinctoria) which is looking stunning in at this time. The slightly sprawling plants are covered with daisy flowers – the wild form is golden but there are several pale yellow types such as “Sauce Hollandaise” and “E C Buxton”. These need good drainage and a sunny spot. They thrive in poor soils as well. After the flowers fade, cut them back very hard and stand back and watch them spring back into flower after a few weeks.
One plant you can’t miss in August is the towering hollyhock growing (traditionally by a cottage wall) up to 10ft tall. The Russian hollyhock (Alcea rugosa) is covered with pale yellow flowers and seems to be resistant to hollyhock rust which can weaken the more highly bred types. Another taller flower is the perennial sunflower and these are in full swing in September. From the palest yellow of Lemon Queen to the deep, rich Loddon Gold these are flowers to bring a smile to everyone that see them. Another sunny daisy is at its peak in October – Coneflowers (Rudbeckia) are creating a storm of gold in the October garden. Once the flowers fade, leave the dead heads on for the first part of winter as they look good for some time. Walk along almost any residential street in November and you are likely to catch the scent of Mahonia – the Oregon grape. The yellow flowers are highly scented and will continue to bloom into winter. The plants are normally very spiny (although spineless types are now available) and tough. Unlike its summer-flowering namesakes, Winter Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum), has no scent but it can be relied on clothe a trellis or fence with yellow flowers in December. It is a plant that thrives on neglect and copes with the toughest sites. Can we have reached the end of the year already, oh well it’s time to expect the lamb’s tails to bloom again!
