welcome to the October edition of The Villager Magazine.

Winter is just around the corner, as temperatures dip, leaves on the trees turn brown and Saturday evenings are dedicated to Strictly and X Factor. We will soon be shopping for Christmas, planning what to do for New Year and grumbling over our phone bills, asking ourselves ‘why it mattered so much that our favourite act won’?

We all get an extra hour in bed on Sunday 25 October as the clocks move backwards one hour.

Saturday 31st is Halloween. Thought to be the one night of the year when ghosts, witches and fairies are especially active, the spookiest thing we are likely to see however is ‘trick or treaters’ so make sure you have stocked up with sweets to give them. Do you remember the film Kes? Its 40 years since the acclaimed novel became a classic of British cinema. Chris Cox and wife Sarah have so much to celebrate, 12 months on business is booming for their dog grooming business BOW WOW and there’s a new addition to the family, a sister for Lacie baby Erin.

When Ex builder Chris embarked on a total career change just 12 months ago, he would have never believed how quickly his business would take off. Since starting Bow Wow dog grooming in November Chris has personally groomed hundreds of dogs and now has over 270 regular clients. Half of which have been recommended by other dog owners, who had taken their pooches to be pampered after seeing Bow Wows advert in The Villager Magazine.

Recently Chris made his first BBC TV & Radio appearances, both had heard how successful Bow Wow had become and wanted to report on Chris’s success following his change in career from builder to dog groomer!

Chris said "It's just grown and grown. I'm ecstatic. One of the things I was adamant about was that I didn't want to use dog cages and would only have one dog in at a time. A lot of people have told me they were put off by other groomers because dogs would be cooped up for hours in cages waiting for their turn. The animals would hate it.”

Chris personally collects any four-legged customers, “I will collect your dog from you and return them to you bathed, dried, clipped and brushed and if you live in DY5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 there will be no transportaion charges.” The lucky pups really get the full service - a wash and dry, a haircut, nail clipping and even a special bow or bandana as a souvenir.

Chris said “I cater for all breeds from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, your pets care is my main priority and I aim is to make your dogs visit as enjoyable as possible and the dogs seem to love it I've not had one instance of an animal getting agitated or biting me."

Interested in the American Civil War? Interested in the American Civil War? The clash of North against South in 1861 to 1865. Would like to experience life as it was back then? Well now you can. A re-enacting group based on the Civil War is starting a local chapter up right here in Kingswinford covering the West Midlands and north.

“Officers of the Confederate States” is the group, based in the south and in existence for 4 years they now boast a membership of over fifty people and are looking to expand not only their numbers but also their activities in the region. They train new recruits for cavalry, infantry and artillery service. It’s a great way to share with fellow enthusiasts the experience of the era; families as well as individuals are welcome of any age bracket. They do charity events and shows all over the country, talks in schools as well as large group events such as Military Odyssey.

Recruits will be asked to attend training once a month for a couple of hours to learn drill and weapons handling and as many events over the year as possible. The events can be from one day to three days and it is under canvas for originality. They are also looking for musicians who can play banjo, flute, drum of other period instruments to form the 2nd Virginian Regimental Band to perform at events.

It looks like September will turn out to be

one of the driest months of the year, certainly in our part of the country. The absence of any significant wind or rain has allowed summer bedding, tubs and hanging baskets to continue flowering right into the beginning of autumn. In fact my Pulsar Geraniums looked better at the end of September than they have done all summer. This can create a bit of a dilemma. I would really like to be pulling them out now, and getting on with planting pansies, wallflowers and spring bulbs, but it does seem a shame to take everything out when they are still looking so good.

By early October, I usually plan to be planting up my tubs and borders so that all my new plantings can become well established before the weather turns cold and wet. The soil is still warm now and experience has shown that leaving it much later will result a poorer display next spring. In gardening, it is always better to work with the seasons, and not leave things too late. Daffodil bulbs certainly need planting as soon as possible because they naturally form new roots very early in the autumn.

The winter flowering pansy has now become universally popular for autumn bedding, but in recent years, many strains appear to have become more susceptible to a disease called 'downy mildew'. Unlike the ubiquitous powdery mildew, this disease effects the underside of leaves with a pinkygrey mould, and often by the time it is noticed, the damage is done. It is also very difficult to control. Not all pansy strains are badly effected, but I prefer to plant the newer strains of the smaller flowered violas like the 'Patiola' or the 'Sorbet' varieties, What the flowers lack in size, they certainly make up for in quantity, and with better disease resistance, they are excellent value for money.

The predominantly wet summer means that lawns have more moss in them than usual at this time of year. Last year, I invested in a lawn scarifier. It is a German machine, very well made but a bit of a brute! Given half a chance, I'm sure it would dig the lawn up completely. Taking advantage of the drier conditions in September, I put my machine to work, and within minutes, piles of moss and dead grass thatch were building up on my lawn. It seems a harsh treatment, but I know the lawn will be all the better for it. My green bin was full in no time, but with all that rubbish cleared from the grass, I applied an autumn lawn food to give it a much needed a boost. With no real rain forecast, I watered the feed in last weekend so I can now look forward to a decent lawn through the winter months.

You may have noticed how the leaves from many trees are beginning to fall early this autumn. In large part, this is probably down to the exceptionally dry end to the summer, but it does make the garden look rather untidy. We can however recycle these by mixing them with any soft garden pruning’s, and putting them in the compost bin. Well made compost is a very valuable material, and I can never get too much of it. Let’s hope that before too many more fall off, we get some nice autumn tints on our shrubs and trees for us all to enjoy

FINAL GOODBYES euthanasia in pets

BY Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS There comes a time in every animal owner’s life when you have to make some very difficult decisions and say your final goodbyes to a beloved pet. Although it can be distressing, it is important to think about your pet’s final day, how you would like it to go and what you would like to do with their body.

How do I know when its time?

The circumstances through which an animal will come to the end of its life are varied.

Maybe they are old and have been slowing down for some time. Sometimes, more tragically, it can be very fast, an injury from which they will never recover or a sudden decline in health that was not expected. Try asking yourself these questions if you are confused; Does your pet get up to greet you in the morning and when you come home, or do they stay in their bed, uninterested in your presence?

Are they still keen to eat their food and look forward to meals or do they have to be tempted to eat?

Are they able to get up and about, to do their toilet and enjoy the sunshine, or are they unable or unwilling to move themselves?

Are they interested in their own comfort?

Will they find a comfortable spot to lie in, or will they just flop down wherever they are?

Animals for whom life has become a trial are often uninterested in their surroundings, their owners or themselves. It is a cliché but it is true, when the time comes for a pet you have known for a long time, you do know that you are doing the right thing.

How is it done?

Most people will bring their pet to the vets, but a few prefer the vet to come out to their homes. Remember it will be more expensive to call the vet out and they may not be able to come at a time of your choosing. If you come to the surgery, always let the receptionist know why you are coming. A good receptionist will book you in at the beginning or end of a clinic, so you will not have to wait too long.

The vet will ask you to sign a permission form and they will bring a nurse in to help them hold your pet. If you want to stay you will be able to hold their head and talk to them, if you do not wish to stay, simply let the vet know, they will give you a few minutes to say goodbye in private. When an animal is put to sleep, an injection is given into one of its veins. This travels directly to the heart and the brain, stopping them both. It works within seconds. All your pet will feel is the prick of the needle, and then the feeling is exactly the same as going to sleep in their basket.

Take as long as you need to say goodbye, do not feel like you have to leave straight away, vets know this is difficult time and will understand. Do not forget to take your pets collar and lead if you wish. You will then have to decide what you wish to do with your pet’s body. In general there are three options; you can take them home to bury, let the vets look after them and the body will be cremated, or you can have the ashes returned to you, although this will be more expensive.

Coming to the end of your pet’s life and having them put to sleep is never easy, there are important decisions to make with respect to whether you wish to stay with them, who would like to be there, where you would like it done and what to do with their body.

Try to think things through before it comes to the day, as then you will be able to grieve without distractions. Very rarely do animals die on their own and without suffering. Euthanasia is a blessing and one of the most important things you will ever do for your pet.
