Don Maclean recently visited Kinver to open Chocolatessence Coffee House and Creperie, I was lucky enough to have a chat with Don and find out what he’s up to, you can read all about it on pages 14 & 15.

Our weather can be really cold or wet for ages, and then almost with out warning, we get some lovely spring days. The sun comes out, the birds are singing and it really does feel as if spring is not too far away. Our gardens have taken a hammering this winter, and we must expect some casualties, especially amongst some evergreen shrubs and any plants that are on the border line of hardiness.

As soon as conditions allow, it is worth making start at cleaning and tidying the borders, and perhaps cutting the lawn for the first time. When the lawn is cut and the edges trimmed the whole garden immediately looks cared for. This is a good time to put fertiliser on all the borders. I use Fish, Blood and Bone which seems suitable for everything. If you add a mulch of your own garden compost, or a proprietary brand, your plants will thrive and weeds will be suppressed.

Rose pruning should be done in March, and new ones planted, and it is a good time to fill any spaces with new plants which then have a whole growing season to become established. Patio pots and containers can be tidied and cleaned up, and any empty ones can be filled with Polyanthus and Pansies to create some immediate colour.

For anyone with a heated greenhouse or conservatory, early March is a good time to buy young plants for use later in hanging baskets. Plants started now will have plenty of time to grow on into strong plants ready to make up the baskets in May. If you have sufficient heat, tomato plants can be planted up to try to get some really early fruit.

They need good light, careful watering and feeding and around 15°C to make good progress.

Lightly mist the flower trusses to aid pollination (preferably around mid-day) and regularly remove side shoots. Early tomatoes are a challenge, but it is possible to have ripe fruit by mid June.

House plants can look rather tired after a winter of central heating and poor light levels, and now is the time to re-pot any that are becoming potbound. Use a good potting compost, and make sure that plants have enough day light in which to thrive. Newly potted plants should be watered carefully for a week or two until new roots have formed. Do not leave plants standing in water for long periods. There is no better way to kill them!

Spring will not be early this year, but let’s hope the cold weather has killed off a few bugs. Snowdrops and Crocus are already in bloom and Daffodils are not far behind. It’s time to get out in the garden again and enjoy it.

WATCH OUT THIEVES ARE ABOUT

It is not enough for the police alone to fight crime. Reducing the risk and fear of crime is a task for the police and the community working together.

It’s up to you to do your part to make life difficult for criminals. You may be surprised to know that only two out of every ten domestic burglaries need forced entry. The majority of these crimes are ‘spur of the moment’ actions, often in response to an open window or valuables on display. By following a few easy steps on securing your home and property you can save yourself the distress and expense of crime.

BURGLARY

When you go out, always close and lock the external doors and windows (even small windows offer easy access) do this even if you are popping out for a short time.

Window locks, especially on older windows will help to stop people getting in; a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window.

If you have deadlocks use them, they make it harder for a thief to get out again. But don’t leave the key near the door or in an obvious place.

Prevent letterbox burglaries by storing keys away from the front door. Don’t leave spare keys outside or in a garage or shed, and put car keys out of sight in the house.

Use timers for lights and radios if you need to be away from home or away on holiday. They create the impression that someone is in. Visible burglar alarms, good lighting and carefully directed security lighting can put burglars off. But make sure that lights don’t disturb your neighbours and that alarms turn off after 20 minutes.

Fences at the back of a house may make this area more secure but walls and solid fencing may let a thief break in without being seen. A good compromise is chain-link fencing or trellis with prickly shrubs.

Fitting a ‘spy hole’ lets you see who is at the door. A door chain lets you open the door a little way to talk to the caller.

Never leave garages or sheds unlocked especially if they connect to the property.

Alarm outside sheds to prevent valuable tools and garden furniture being taken this also prevents your own tools being used to break into your house.

If you are installing new windows or doors, get ones that are certified to British standard.

BOGUS CALLERS

Not all burglars break into homes - some will try to trick or con their way in. They are known as bogus callers and will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as the Utility Companies - Gas, Electricity and Water or the Council. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs.

Bogus callers succeed because they sound believable, so don't be fooled. Make sure in your own mind that they are whom they claim to be by following these simple steps: Think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise them.

Ask callers for proof of identity. Genuine tradesmen should carry an identification card with their photograph on. Check this carefully. If you are unsure, telephone the company the caller claims to represent.

The Utilities now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one of these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity.

Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere which may encourage you to leave your house they may have an accomplice awaiting this distraction.

If you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don't let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return or ask the caller to contact this person.

SECURITY

Alarm systems and CCTV cameras are a worthwhile investment in the protection of your home and family. Studies reveal that it is far less likely that you will become the victim of a burglary at home if you have a correctly fitted and well maintained burglar alarm and CCTV system. However, they should be regarded only as one element within a complete security package.

DON MACLEAN OPENS NEW CAFE IN KINVER

Crowds gathered in Chenevare Mews, to welcome Comedian and Radio 2 Presenter Don Maclean and wife Toni to Kinver. Don and Toni had made a special journey to officially open Kinver’s newest Coffee house and Creperie owned by old friends Mandy and Rob Willis.

Rob and Don have worked together on many occasions at theatres around the country, while Don takes to the stage in pantomime, Rob keeps the beat in time as musical director, with their most recent performance having been at Birmingham Hippodrome where Don played Friar Tuck alongside John Barrowman as Robin Hood.

When Don heard Mandy and Rob were extending their already established chocolate shop ‘Chocolatessence’ and creating a Coffee house and Creperie, he couldn’t wait to pop in and grab a coffee and officially open the cafe for them.

Don entertained the crowds, cut the ribbon and invited everyone in for free drinks and nibbles, before settling down with wife Toni to chat with the locals and sign autographs.

Don and Toni are hoping to be regular visitors having sampled the wonderful delights on offer, however Don’s busy schedule throughout the year will mean they won’t be able to visit as often as they would like.

Don and Toni told The Villager, “We are off to Tenerife next week for a quick break before work starts once more.”

Don is currently rehearsing for theatre show “Back to Back” alongside co writer Malcolm Stent, it's comedy for grown-ups who like their comedy clean. If you can remember Pop Bottles with Stoppers, Balaclavas or Knitted Swimming Costumes....then this show is for you! A performance that will not only remind you of the glory days of radio & of Birmingham’s Bullring, but it will also teach you how to speak Latin & to cope with the TV remote. Rob is responsible for all the music & even gets the chance to shine with his own solo spot, so well worth going to see.

Summer will take Don and Toni on tour cruising with P&O then during June, July & September Don will be touring with International recording artist ‘Dana’ Ireland’s first winner of the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest.

The autumn season will see Don as Gepetto in the children’s show Pinocchio and if you missed Don as Friar Tuck at Birmingham Hippodrome you can see the show at New Theatre, Cardiff from 12th December. Looks like Don is in for a busy year once again, understandable that visit to Kinver won’t be as often as he had liked, but he wished Mandy and Rob every success.

Following the huge success of Cellars in Lower High Street, Stourbridge, Mustafa along with his team have opened Maya in High Street, Kinver.

Last Wednesday evening we accepted an invitation to dine at Maya and sample fine Indian cuisine. The restaurant is situated on Kinver High Street, in a beautiful Victorian Styled building, which was warmly lit and looked very inviting. Inside the decor is luxurious, deep purples, soft creams and sumptuous browns.

We were seated in the lounge area where we enjoyed a drink from the vast bar menu while choosing our meals. The a la carte menu offers a huge variety of choice, whether you enjoy a mild and fruity dish such as North Bengal Fruity Chicken or you prefer a hot Prawn Vindaloo there is something to appeal to everyone, with a good choice of vegetarian dishes too.

Once we had made our decision to opt for starters of Papadoms, Chicken Tikka and Chicken Shashlick and a main course of South Indian Garlic Chili Chicken and Chicken Jalfrazi, we were seated upstairs in the chic restaurant area. It wasn’t long before our starters arrived, perfectly presented both were served with a fresh salad garnish, a selection of dips and were delicious, piping hot and the servings were more than ample. The Chicken was tender, succulent and most enjoyable.

Having made excellent choices, with our starters we eagerly awaited our main course dishes, we were not disappointed; Again they were beautifully presented and the aroma was wonderful, we had both chosen fairly hot dishes and were delighted with the enriched flavours of the exotic herbs and spices, both dishes were superb, once more the chicken was both tender and succulent and the Pilau Rice was light and fluffy, all in all a wonderful tasty experience.

We declined the sweet menu due to the fact that we were too full to eat another morsel and ordered liqueur coffees to round off our wonderful meal.

We both agreed we had enjoyed an exceptional meal with fabulous hospitality in luxurious, surroundings. We will definitely dine at Maya again and would hastily recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys tasty Indian cuisine.

Vets Corner THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF BUYING A PUPPY

Buying a new dog is an important decision. In practice, I see many new puppies that have been bought that are unsuitable, or from puppy farms and the owners aren’t even aware. So, I thought I would write a piece on how to go about researching, finding and buying a new pup.

DO

• Work out what breed is going to be best for your lifestyle and home. Working breeds such as Collies are popular but need huge amounts of exercise and stimulation. Smaller dogs such as Chihuahuas are not necessarily an easy option, they too are very energetic and clever dogs. Also, take care not to spoil a toy dog and ‘baby’ them as this usually leads to a badly behaved pet!

• If you are thinking of getting a pedigree dog, then the best place to start looking is the Kennel Club website (www.thekennelclub.org.uk) This lists all the breeders of pedigree dogs and which ones have litters available.

• Always ensure you see the pups with the Bitch and ask after the Dog as well. Good breeders will invite you into their home, be able to talk to you about the pup’s pedigree and be happy to discuss their care.

• If you are thinking of taking on a rescue dog, go to the larger rescue charities such as the Dogs Trust.

They will provide you with excellent back up and care for you and your new dog.

DON’T

• NEVER agree to buy a pup which the breeder offers to deliver, this is usually because they don’t want you to see where your pup was bred, This is a common tactic of puppy farms, where the conditions for the dogs are dreadful.

• Never buy a puppy from a pet shop. You won’t know any of the pup’s history and they often come from disreputable sources as the shops need a regular constant supply.

• Make sure that you know how much your chosen breed of dog should cost. Puppy farms and disreputable breeders will sell pups for much cheaper than they should be, another clue these dogs will not be well bred or brought up.

• Never buy a dog advertised in a newspaper. Good breeders rarely need to advertise their litters. Also, never use an advert that lists only a mobile phone number. This will usually be a pre-paid phone and thrown away once the litter is sold.

• If your pup is a registered pedigree, then all the papers will be with them when you take them home. If the breeder claims they don’t have the forms and they will ‘send them in the post’, don’t expect to receive any! Also, Kennel club pedigrees are printed on official paper, a rough photocopied sheet is not proof of pedigree.

• Never buy a puppy as a present, unless the recipient is fully aware and happy to have it.
