Cold, winter weather can cause problems for everyone but older people, young children and those with chronic health conditions are especially vulnerable.

Natalie Neale and Councillors Patrick Harley and Peter Miller have agreed to offer guidance on completing future applications to Dudley MBC’s community forums capital allocation fund.

The shrub specialist at your local nursery or garden centre should be able to advise you on the best varieties to choose. I have a very nice single plant of Ilex aquifolium 'Argenteo-marginata' which is great for cutting a few sprigs for decoration each Christmas, and it does have a few berries each year even though I do not know of another holly in the immediate neighbourhood, but there must be a male somewhere!

DECK THE HALLS WITH HOLLY & MISTLETOE

t this time of year, everyone is busy shopping and getting ready for Christmas and often the garden is left to look after itself during December.

Nurseries and Garden Centres are busy too, most customers are not browsing the shrub displays, but preferring the warm greenhouses and garden shops with their displays of Poinsettias, Cyclamen, planted bowls and all things to decorate the home at Christmas.

A

One group of shrubs that we all associate with Christmas is ‘holly’ (Latin name: Ilex).

Hollies are quite versatile and can be grown as a specimen bush or tree, or used as an evergreen hedge offering both protection and privacy. Over time hollies can be pruned and clipped into many different shapes which make them ideal for topiary. All species have clusters of small white flowers in April or May and these can be followed in autumn by coloured berries in shades of orange, red, scarlet and yellow depending on the variety chosen. Many varieties also have attractive 'silver' or golden variegated foliage which can be so much more attractive than the green leaved varieties.

If you have a holly tree in your garden that never bears any berries, there may be a very simple explanation. Hollies are unusual in that there are both male and female varieties, and only the female plants will have berries. Female varieties do need a male variety somewhere in close proximity in order to be pollinated.

Hang up the Mistletoe and sneak an extra kiss or two!

Just one male plant is sufficient for many female plants as bees and insects will ensure successful pollination. Even a female variety can miss a year's berries if we get strong late frosts when the plant is in full bloom.

Do be careful when choosing varieties of holly as the cultivar names can be very confusing.

For instance, Ilex aquifolium 'Silver Queen' is a male variety as is Ilex aquifolium 'Golden Queen' so neither will bear berries. If you want to plant one tree, then do look out for a self-fertile variety which does not need a pollinator.

Another plant that we only think of at Christmas is the mistletoe (Latin name; Viscum album).

Surprisingly Mistletoe also produces male and female plants, and only the female ones will bear berries, and then only when a male form is in the vicinity. This plant is parasitic and only grows on other trees, predominantly apple and poplar, sometimes on willow but not on oaks or conifers. Mistletoe is often hung up in a strategic position so that those with a romantic disposition can sneak an extra kiss or two during the festive season. It is supposed to be one kiss for each berry so you definitely need a female plant covered in berries!

In nature, birds distribute the seeds when they wipe their beak on a branch after eating the very sticky berries. If you want to grow some for yourself, try introducing them onto an apple tree. Choose a medium sized branch 3 or 4 inches thick (8 to 10 cm.) and lift a flap of bark on the underside and squeeze in some squashed berries. You should really have quite a few attempts as take up rate is not high and it is best done in late winter or early spring, but if the young romantics have their way, there may not be any berries left by then.

Half Penny Green Air Scouts

CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF hen Karl Owen first became Group Scout Leader at Half Penny Green Air Scouts there were just 18 Scouts on roll, now just over 18 months on the scout group has grown in numbers and boasts 81 members due to the formation of a Beaver Scout colony and a Cub Scout pack.

Karl told the Villager “Scouting in general is widespread; however, Air Scouting is not, we are the only ‘Air Group’ in the West Mercia and Staffordshire counties. For nearly 50 years children aged 10-14 have been Air Scouts at Half Penny Green and we have introduced Air Beaver and Air Cub groups too, now children from age 5 can become involved in aviation themed activities, events and attendRAF Bases.”

RAF RECOGNITION Halfpenny Green Air Scouts had their Bi-annual RAF inspection and were cleared for take-off by the inspecting officer, Squadron Leader Baxter Pulling, when he visited the group on October 21. The recognition allows the group to take part in camps, flights and events at active RAF bases.

He was greeted with a wonderful turn out of all three sections, by children from 5 up to 14 years.

Three local RAF Cadet Squadrons also offered their support.

The children really enjoyed the day as did the Squadron Leader. Responsible for auditing all of the midlands air groups, he said “with a success born out of their enthusiasm for scouting and air activities and he would be reporting the group to headquarters as outstanding.”

hristmas time is upon us again and it is time for the dreaded Christmas shopping! It’s not many peoples idea of fun, trying to find suitable presents for Great Aunt Flo and all those cousins you barely see. But what about the animals in our lives? There are plenty of pre-packaged 'treat stockings' out there, but these are not very original and are calorie packed. So, how about buying a useful present that they will enjoy?

in their environment. This is why they may play enthusiastically with a new toy for a couple of days but bore of it quickly. So, rather than buying a couple of costly toys, buy 10 to 15 fairly cheap ones and only have a few out at any one time, rotating them regularly to keep their interest. Stuffed puzzle toys are available for cats and are excellent for making them work for their food. Obesity is a big health issue in cats and anything which keeps them active is a good idea. One of my favorites is the 'fishing rod' toys, particularly good to keep cats moving while their owners are being lazy, they are easily operated with one arm from the comfort of a sofa! One issue cats have is they don't drink very much.

This doesn't generally cause problems but encouraging them to drink more is helpful. One great way to do this is using a 'Pet Fountain'. The constantly flowing water will cause the cat to be more interested, as most cat owners know, they are often keen to drink from dripping taps!

to keep them occupied. This can lead to them becoming bored which can cause behavioural issues. So, the best toys for dogs are ones which keep them busy and entertained. Many dogs love to chew but some are experts at reducing chew treats to nothing in record time! Products like the Nylabone chews are excellent as they are virtually indestructible, are scented which keeps the dog interested they come in various sizes so can withstand even the strongest jaws! Another good toy for dogs is the 'treat puzzle' kind.

These are usually hollow rubber chew toys which can be stuffed with kibble or treats. The dog has to play, roll, throw and chew the toy to get the biscuits out. They will only get one every so often, so these can keep them interested for hours. They are also a good way of making them 'work' for their food, particularly important for those a little broad about the beam! The best of these are the 'Kong' range. It is also important to know what not to buy for your pet. For example, terrier breeds love nothing more than to 'kill' their toys and will rip a nice, soft plush teddy to pieces in no time. Better for them are the 'tugger' rope type toys which can withstand a huge amount of abuse and still survive!

Watch out the Crypto Locker Virus is about

A new improved virus has been infecting a number of PC’s recently. Because of the damage it causes; it is a virus to get prepared for, or preferably avoid.

This ransomware is particularly nasty because infected computers are in danger of losing personal files forever.

It is spread via fake emails, designed to mimic legitimate messages so if you receive an email with an attachment, from anyone, do not open it unless you are sure it is legitimate.

This virus encrypts all of your documents and pictures, then it displays the CryptoLocker screen displayed below:

If you don’t pay the ransom of 300 euros within the time shown, you will lose all your documents forever. There is no known way to decrypt your files without the encryption key.

Once you have paid the ransom, there is no guarantee you will receive the decryption key, so do not pay it.

A good backup routine is now more important than ever!

The only way to prevent this is to have a current working backup, that is performed regularly, and an up to date antivirus program.

Your backup drive should not be permanently connected, because it will get encrypted immediately after infection.

If you get infected by this virus, then please turn off ALL of your computers in the building immediately, and call us for a visit to remove it and hopefully recover your documents.

Look for lights that operate at a low voltage via a transformer.

Low voltage sets pose less risk of electric shock. However, even low voltage equipment is capable of starting a fire.

Avoid buying second-hand. If you do make sure they are PAT tested first. If your lights don't display a test sticker, then it is vital that you get them checked out before use.

WHEN BUYING LIGHTING OR DISPLAY ITEMS:

Unplug the lights before removing bulbs. Never insert or remove bulbs when switched on.

Before using, inspect cables & bulbs for damage.

NEVER use damaged lights.

Year after year we add to our Christmas lights, and not content with just lighting we also have motorised displays, all of this is great and adds to the Christmas atmosphere, and we at Electrical Experts would like to help you continue with this excellent tradition in a safe way.

So before you set up your Christmas lighting displays this year, please read this advice. I will help to ensure your display doesn’t fall foul of any regulations but more importantly it’s safe for you and your family.

Do not use lights outdoors unless they are specifically made for such use.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Use an RCD - Residual Current Device, for added protection against shock.

Do NOT run the cable where it can be damaged, walked on, or where a door or window can close on it.

Some lights can generate a considerable amount of heat.

So keep lights clear of decorations & flammable materials.

Ensure they don't present a trip hazard for anyone.

Only use extension cables that have been tested.

Switch them off when you go to bed and when you go out of the house.

Do not allow children to play with the lights.

Do not use any form of makeshift wiring for lights.

Check for overloaded plugs - you should fit one plug per socket unless you use a protected bar adapter on a lead. But don't plug appliances into the adapter that collectively use more than 13 amps of current & avoid daisy chaining extension Do not use lights outdoors unless they are specifically made for such use.

Don't extend cables on outdoor lights, they are designed to be weatherproof.

Never use extension leads or plugs and sockets outdoors unless specifically designed for outdoor use.

On outdoor lights always check that the transformer is suitable for an outdoor location.

STORING AFTER USE

Take care when dismantling and packing the lights not to damage them.

Keep them safely stored away out of reach of children.

Avoid damp or excessively hot conditions.

SERVES 4 TO 5 YOU WILL NEED: Lean Steak Mince (500g) Red Kidney Beans in Chilli Sauce (420g) 2 X 400g cans of Chopped Tomatoes in Tomato Juice 1 large Onions (diced) 1 Red Pepper (diced) 3 Oxo’s 1 tsp Chilli Powder (or to taste) Black Pepper Cook in a large frying pan or saucepan, any remaining can be frozen to use later 1. Cook and drain the steak mince in a large frying pan.

2. Add the onion to the steak mince and cook to soften.

3. Add the red kidney beans in chilli sauce and chopped tomatoes stir well.

4. Mix the oxo’s and chilli powder with a quarter of a cup of boiling water, add to the pan and stir. Add black pepper. (add chili powder a little at a time to suit your taste)

5. Finally add diced red pepper.

6. Cook on a low heat, stirring frequently, for 20 to 25 minutes.

Serve with boiled rice, potato wedges, jacket potato or crusty bread. You can garnish with tortilla chips or grated cheese once served.
