John Williams – The Olympic Spirit

John Williams, an iconic American composer, known for his movie scores, such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park. The Olympic Spirit was written for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.

Overview: The piece is an orchestral fanfare, embodying the grandeur and excitement of the Olympic Games. It’s triumphant and uplifting, with a sense of celebration that matches the energy of the event. It captures the hope and ambition associated with athletes and international competition.

Jerry Goldsmith – Theme from Rudy

Jerry Goldsmith, an American composer known for his work in film and television, with scores for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Omen. Rudy (1993) is an American sports drama film based on the life of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, a young man who dreams of playing football for the University of Notre Dame despite his small stature.

Overview: Theme from Rudy is a heartfelt and inspiring orchestral piece, reflective of the perseverance and emotional journey of the protagonist. The score has a soaring, emotional quality, underlying themes of hope, determination, and triumph against the odds.

Leroy Anderson – Home Stretch

Leroy Anderson, an American composer, best known for his light orchestral music, including The Syncopated Clock and Blue Tango. His style was marked by catchy, upbeat tunes and playful rhythms. Overview: Home Stretch is one of Anderson’s lesser-known compositions, featuring his signature light orchestral style with a dynamic, upbeat, and energetic feel, evoking the thrill of a race or competition. It’s often associated with sports and events requiring a final push to the finish.

CONCERT NOTES

Bill Conti – Suite from Rocky

Bill Conti, an American composer known for his work on many successful film scores, especially the Rocky series. Rocky (1976) tells the story of Rocky Balboa, a boxer who gets a chance to fight for the heavyweight title.

Overview: Suite from Rocky features the famous Gonna Fly Now theme, which became an anthem for determination and overcoming obstacles. The suite captures the essence of struggle and triumph, with an iconic blend of brass and strings that evoke Rocky’s physical and emotional journey. The music is powerful, energizing, and instantly recognizable.

John Williams – Wide Receiver (Theme from NBC Football)

As with his other sports-related compositions, John Williams wrote Wide Receiver for NBC’s coverage of American football. Williams is celebrated for writing music that captures the spirit of large, thrilling events.

Overview: Wide Receiver is a bold, fast-paced piece designed to accompany the energy of American football, often heard during NBC’s broadcasts. The composition features strong brass and percussion, amplifying the excitement of the game and complementing its rapid pace and intensity.

John Tesh –Roundball Rock (NBA on NBC Theme)

John Tesh, an American musician and composer, best known for his work as a television host and his composition of themes for major television events. Roundball Rock was written for NBC’s coverage of NBA basketball, debuting in 1990.

Overview: Roundball Rock is an energetic, jazz-influenced theme with a catchy, rhythmic melody. The piece became synonymous with basketball and has an upbeat, competitive vibe. It remains a favorite sports theme for many fans, capturing the fast-paced nature of the game.

CONCERT NOTES

Emile Waldteufel – Skater’s Waltz

Emile Waldteufel, a French composer and conductor in the late 19th century, best known for his waltzes. Skater’s Waltz (Les Patineurs) was composed in 1882 and has since become one of his most famous works.

Overview: This light and whimsical waltz imitates the motion of ice skaters, with its flowing melodies and playful rhythm. The piece is evocative of the grace and beauty of skating, and has been a favorite in classical music circles and even in skating competitions.

CONCERT NOTES

concert halls and used in various media, most notably the TV commercial by America’s Beef Producers with the slogan “Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner”.

Miklós Rózsa - Parade of the Charioteers from Ben-Hur

Miklós Rózsa was a HungarianAmerican composer trained in Germany who was active in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States from 1925 to 1995, with extensive sojourns in Italy from 1953 onward. Best known for his nearly one hundred film scores, he nevertheless maintained a steadfast allegiance to absolute concert music.

Overview: One of Miklós Rózsa’s most famous pieces from his most successful film score, for William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959), Parade of the Charioteers is a fine example of the composer improvising authentic Roman-era music in epic style. His inspiration came to him in 1958, standing on the Palantine Hill in Rome, where the Caesars’ palaces had been, humming and whistling ideas, when the main body of the march merged in his thoughts.

A

Special Venice Symphony Compilation - An All-Star Suite:

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Mvt. 1 is a symbol of struggle and victory, encapsulated in its famous “fate” motif. It remains one of the most recognized pieces in classical music.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings is a deeply emotional and mournful piece, widely regarded as one of the most powerful expressions of sadness and contemplation in the classical repertoire.

Respighi’s Pines of the Appian Way from Pines of Rome is a vivid, dramatic depiction of ancient Roman landscapes, using orchestral forces to evoke the grandeur and history of the Appian Way.
