Dear Friends,
Welcome to Cosmic Worlds, the grand finale of our 2024-25 season!
As we reflect on an extraordinary year of music—seven unforgettable concerts at the Venice Performing Arts Center—we’re filled with immense gratitude. Under the inspired direction of Music Director Troy Quinn, our 75 exceptional musicians from Florida and beyond have delivered a season that truly shines among the best orchestras in the nation.
This year, we’ve been privileged to showcase a stunning array of guest artists. We’re especially excited to welcome renowned saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky and The Key Chorale Women’s Chorus who will lead us on an unforgettable journey through this cosmic finale to a stellar season.
And the music doesn’t stop here! Join us on May 4 at 3:30 p.m. at Wellen Park for a free outdoor concert featuring the Venetian Serenaders, part of our Capstan Chamber Series. Then, mark your calendars for May 24 at CoolToday Park, where we’ll present our beloved Patriotic Pops and fireworks. This year’s theme, The Greatest Generation, pays tribute to the heroes of World War II. Tickets are available now on Ticketmaster.
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to share a first glimpse of our 2025-26 season! If you’ve received your season brochure, don’t forget to submit your order form by June 1 to guarantee your seats before the Box Office begins assigning them. If you haven’t received one, you can view and download the digital brochure and order form at thevenicesymphony.org.
We also invite young musicians to be part of our Venice Summer Music Academy, running June 2–6 and June 9–13 at Garden Elementary and Venice High School. Open to students in grades K-11, the program offers hands-on musical learning, lessons, and fun. Details are available at thevenicesymphony.org.
Thank you for being an essential part of The Venice Symphony family. Your support is the reason we can continue to inspire, educate, and entertain through music.
With heartfelt thanks,

Christine Kasten, President/CEO The Venice Symphony

CONCERT NOTES
John Williams
The “Flying Theme” from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is one of John Williams’ most iconic and emotionally resonant pieces, and it exemplifies his masterful use of leitmotif, orchestration, and emotional storytelling through music.
The piece is written in a lush, late-Romantic orchestral style with clear influences from composers like Korngold, Tchaikovsky, and Holst. It’s part of a tradition of symphonic film scoring that Williams revived in the 1970s and ‘80s, bringing a classical sensibility to modern cinema.
The “Flying Theme” accompanies the magical moment when Elliott and E.T. take flight on a bicycle across the moonlit sky. It symbolizes wonder, freedom, and the deep emotional bond between a child and a mysterious, kind alien. The theme reflects the overarching narrative of E.T.—innocence, discovery, and connection.

CONCERT NOTES
Franz Waxman
A Place in the Sun is a romantic drama based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy. It’s a story of ambition, love, and tragedy, dealing with themes of class division, desire, and guilt.
Waxman’s score had to capture the emotional highs of romance and the darkness of moral conflict. His suite distills many of those ideas into a concentrated concert form. You can hear echoes of late Romantic composers (Mahler, Strauss) in the lush orchestration, and hints of 20th-century modernism in the tension and dissonance. A Place in the Sun won Waxman the 1952 academy award for best Original Score.
Waxman is often compared to contemporaries like Max Steiner, Miklós Rózsa, and Dimitri Tiomkin, but his sound is more psychologically intimate and fluid.

CONCERT NOTES

Gustav Holst
Composed between 1914 and 1917, during the First World War, Holst’s The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite, each one depicting the astrological mood and character of a planet as understood through Theosophy and astrological mysticism, rather than mythology or science.
Holst was influenced by astrology, not astronomy—this was meant as a psychological/spiritual portrait of human traits projected onto the planets.
The seven movements of the piece are broken down by each planet as shown above: Mars, the bringer of War, Venus, the bringer of peace, Mercury, the Winged Messenger, jupiter, the bringer of jollity, Saturn, the bringer of old age, uranus, the Magician, and neptune, the Mystic.
CONCERT NOTES

Imogen Holst , the composer’s daughter, wrote of the 1918 premiere: “Even those listeners who had studied the score for months were taken aback by the unexpected clamour of Mars. During Jupiter the charwomen working in the corridors put down their scrubbing-brushes and began to dance. In Saturn the isolated listeners in the dark, halfempty hall felt themselves growing older at every bar. But it was the end of Neptune that was unforgettable, with its hidden chorus of women’s voices growing fainter and fainter in the distance, until the imagination knew no difference between sound and silence.”
Don’t Miss Our Pre-Concert Talks
Join Music Director Troy Quinn, soloists and musicians for a casual, entertaining and informative talk and Q&A. This is a free half-hour program before every concert, and you do not need a concert ticket or reservation. Open seating is in the orchestra level of the concert hall.
