Dear Friends,

On behalf of The Venice Symphony, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Classical Rockstars! Tonight, we celebrate the brilliance and energy of the great masters with a thrilling program featuring guest artist Robert DeMaine, Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. We are honored to share the stage with such an extraordinary musician and look forward to an unforgettable performance under the baton of Music Director Troy Quinn.

As we continue our exciting 2025–26 Season, we extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for The Venice Symphony’s Jukebox Brunch Fundraiser earlier this month. Your support helps us bring transformative musical experiences to our community all year long. We also send our gratitude to the Musician Host Families and Friends of The Venice Symphony who gave our musicians such a warm welcome at our first concert of the season. Your hospitality and enthusiasm set the perfect tone for the year ahead.

The holidays are fast approaching, and our calendar is filled with can’t-miss performances. On November 22, the full Venice Symphony Big Band takes the stage right here at the Venice Performing Arts Center for Cornucopia of Jazz, a pre-Thanksgiving celebration of swing and soul. Then, get ready to ring in the season with Sounds of the Seasons, with a choice of four concerts this year to experience the joy of holiday music performed by your Venice Symphony.

As we celebrate the power of music to connect and uplift, we’re also launching our Holiday Giving Appeal, Orchestrating Joy. Your generosity helps ensure that The Venice Symphony continues to inspire audiences, support music education, and bring the gift of live symphonic music to our community. Please see one of our staff members in the lobby to learn how you can give the gift of music this year.

Thank you for being part of The Venice Symphony family and for joining us for Classical Rockstars. Enjoy the concert and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Warm regards,

TROY QUINN, MUSIC DIRECTOR TROY QUINN, MUSIC DIRECTOR

Emmy-nominated conductor Troy Quinn has quickly established himself as one of his generation’s most versatile young artists. Lauded for his energetic and riveting conducting, charismatic stage presence, and genre-defying programs, Quinn is in his eighth season as Music Director of the Venice Symphony in Florida. He is also in his ninth season as Music Director of the Owensboro Symphony in Kentucky and serves concurrently as the Pops Conductor of both the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Santa Rosa Symphony in California. Quinn’s engagements have included performances with many prestigious orchestras in the United States, including the Boston Pops, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

Equally at home in the pops and commercial world, Quinn has performed and recorded with some of the most popular artists of our time, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Lee Greenwood, Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson, Michael Feinstein, Tower of Power, Rockapella, Cypress Hill, The Indigo Girls, and Nas. As an accomplished vocalist, Quinn has also collaborated with such renowned composers as Alan Menken, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri, and Alexandre Desplat while performing under prominent maestros, including Helmuth Rilling, Carl St. Clair, and Dan Saunders of the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to his concert work, Quinn has worked extensively in the television and recording industry, earning an Emmy nomination for the PBS special A Night at the Oscars with the Owensboro Symphony. He has made appearances on such hit television shows as Fox’s GLEE, NBC’s The Voice, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno while recording on films like The Call of the Wild and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He has also appeared at many of the world’s major music centers and at such famed venues as the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Tanglewood.

A native of Connecticut, Quinn pursued a bachelor of arts degree from Providence College where he was the recipient of the Leo S. Cannon award for superior achievement in the music field. He went on to earn his master’s degree with honors from the Manhattan School of Music, studying conducting with David Gilbert and voice with highly acclaimed Metropolitan Opera singer Mark Oswald. He completed his doctorate in conducting at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he studied with Larry Livingston and Jo-Michael Scheibe and was named the outstanding doctoral graduate of his class. Quinn has participated in numerous masterclasses as a conducting fellow, attending conducting institutes at the Royal Academy of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Bard Conservatory of Music. He has been mentored by such renowned conductors as Benjamin Zander, Neil Varon, and Leon Botstein. Quinn serves on the conducting faculty at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music and has previously served as a faculty member at Providence College, where he was also awarded an honorary doctorate.

He is widely regarded as one of the finest instrumentalists of his generation, performing to critical acclaim as soloist, recitalist, orchestra principal, recording artist,

chamber musician, and composer-arranger.

In 2010, deMaine became a founding member of the highly acclaimed Ehnes Quartet and completed several world tours and recordings with the ensemble. In 2012, he was invited to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Principal Cello.

CONCERT NOTES

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Overture to The Marriage of Figaro

Mozart’s effervescent overture to The Marriage of Figaro sets the stage for one of opera’s most beloved comedies. Written in a burst of inspiration just before the premiere, the music sparkles with energy, wit, and charm. Its racing strings and buoyant spirit capture the opera’s world of love, mischief, and quicksilver emotion—all in under five minutes of pure joy.

Franz Joseph Haydn

Cello Concerto in C Major

Once thought lost for nearly 200 years, Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major was rediscovered in 1961 and quickly became a favorite of cellists worldwide. The work brims with youthful vitality—bold themes, elegant lyricism, and lively conversation between soloist and orchestra. It’s a perfect showcase for the cello’s expressive warmth and virtuosic agility.

Ludwig van Beethoven

Symphony No. 7 in A Major

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is a jubilant celebration of rhythm and motion, once called “the apotheosis of the dance.” From the majestic opening to the haunting Allegretto and the exhilarating finale, the symphony pulses with energy and life. It remains one of Beethoven’s most exhilarating and beloved works—music that seems to dance on its own.

A TRIBUTE TO JEAN PETERS

The Venice Symphony fondly remembers Jean Davies peters, who passed away peacefully in August.

Serving as The Symphony’s Executive Director from 1990 to 2012, Jean’s vision, leadership, and steadfast dedication helped build the strong foundation that allows our orchestra to continue to flourish today.

Before coming to Venice, Jean brought more than 20 years of volunteer experience with orchestras in Rockford, IL; Cincinnati, OH; and Des Moines, IA. Under her guidance, The Venice Symphony grew rapidly—moving from a high school auditorium to the Church of the Nazarene, a 650-seat venue with excellent acoustics that welcomed sold-out audiences.

NOVEMBER 15, 2011

Running the Symphony from her home, Jean managed everything from scheduling and ticket sales to marketing and publicity. As board member Judy Bacon once said, “Jean is a self-starter and can do anything.” Her efforts paid off—soon, demand for concerts soared and performances multiplied.

Jean believed The Venice Symphony should be a “classy symphony.” She introduced formal concert attire for musicians and launched the summer music camp for youth—a cherished tradition that continues to this day.

Many remember her fondly as “The Symphony Lady,” a title she wore with pride. Upon her retirement after 21 years, Jean reflected, “The thing I think is so wonderful is how the Symphony has grown.”

Our community owes much to Jean Peters for her pioneering spirit and enduring love of music. To honor her legacy, please consider supporting The Venice Symphony’s mission of transforming lives through exceptional musical experiences with a gift in her memory.
