CONCERT NOTES
Ludwig van Beethoven –
Egmont Overture

alan Hovhaness –
Beethoven’s Egmont Overture was written in 1810 as part of the incidental music for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Egmont. The work is deeply dramatic and embodies the tragic heroism of the protagonist, Count Egmont, who fights for freedom in the face of oppression. The overture is in the key of F minor and features intense, stormy music that builds to a triumphant conclusion, symbolizing the triumph of liberty over tyranny. It remains one of Beethoven’s most celebrated orchestral works.
Prayer of St. Gregory (for trumpet and strings)

Composed in 1955, Prayer of St. Gregory is one of Hovhaness’ most famous works, often performed with trumpet solo and string orchestra. The piece is meditative and spiritual, inspired by the ancient liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It has a serene, mystical atmosphere, with the trumpet’s soaring melodic lines evoking a sense of prayer and contemplation. The piece is notable for its use of modal scales and minimalist textures, creating a timeless, otherworldly sound.
CONCERT NOTES
astor piazzolla –Libertango
Argentinian composer and bandoneón (a type of concertina) player Astor Piazzolla revolutionized the traditional tango by incorporating elements of jazz and classical music, creating a genre known as nuevo tango. Composed in 1974, Libertango is one of Piazzolla’s most famous and enduring works. The piece is a rhythmic, dramatic tango with sweeping melodies and a sense of urgency, symbolizing the desire for freedom and change. It has been performed in many different arrangements and remains one of Piazzolla’s most recognizable compositions.

antonio Vivaldi –
Mandolin Concerto in C Major
Vivaldi’s Mandolin Concerto in C Major is a lively and colorful work that showcases the mandolin as a solo instrument. Written during the Baroque period (early 18th century), the concerto features the typical three-movement structure: fast-slow-fast. The first movement is exuberant and playful, the second movement is slow and lyrical, and the final movement is lively and energetic, offering a virtuosic display of the mandolin’s capabilities. This piece is a popular work in the Baroque concerto repertoire, especially for mandolinists.

CONCERT NOTES
angel Villoldo –
El Choclo (Tango)

Franz Joseph Haydn –
Composed by the Argentine musician Angel Villoldo in the early 20th century, El Choclo is one of the most iconic tangos in the world. The piece was written in 1903 and has become a standard of the tango genre, characterized by its catchy, rhythmic melody and sensuous mood. El Choclo has been arranged for many different instruments, including orchestra, and has been performed by numerous musicians across various genres. It captures the spirit of Argentine tango, blending passion and nostalgia.
Symphony No. 88 in G Major

Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 is one of his later symphonies, composed in 1787, during a period when Haydn’s symphonic style had reached its full maturity. The symphony is bright and energetic, with clear, elegant melodies and a rich, varied orchestration. The work is known for its sophisticated use of form, with the first movement being particularly notable for its unexpected harmonic twists. The second movement is lyrical and graceful, while the third movement features an energetic, dance-like theme. The symphony concludes with a lively finale that is both joyous and intricate.
CONCERT NOTES
Johannes Brahms –
Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn
Composed in 1873, Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn is a set of variations based on a theme that was long believed to be by Haydn, though its true origin is disputed. The piece is a brilliant example of Brahms’ mastery in variation form, where he takes the simple theme and transforms it through intricate harmonies, rhythms, and textures. The work is filled with both elegance and depth, with Brahms weaving complex contrapuntal lines into the variations. The final theme, marked Chorale St. Antoni, gives the piece a noble, almost hymn-like quality.
