Porch Perfect: Easy Upgrades That Make
(StatePoint) Whether you’re hosting neighbors for sweet tea or just enjoying the breeze after a long day, the front porch is having a moment. No longer just a pass-through space, it’s become an extension of the home’s personality— part welcome mat, part curb appeal showpiece. The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to breathe new life into your front entry. A few smart updates can add style, comfort and even a layer of
a Lasting First Impression

security.
Start With the Hardware
Door hardware may not seem like the most exciting element to refresh—but it’s exactly where trends are starting to shift. Traditionally, storm and screen door hardware has stayed relatively static in style and finish. But that’s starting to change. Companies like Wright Products are bringing a more design-forward approach to this category, offering hardware that blends security with aesthetics.
This new wave of entry hardware features cleaner silhouettes, decorative backplates, and more modern finishes that complement today’s popular exterior palettes. It’s a subtle upgrade that makes a major visual difference—especially when paired with a freshly painted front door or a new doormat.
Layer in Light and Texture
String lights, lanterns or updated sconces can turn your porch into a cozy, eveningready space. Add a weatherresistant rug, a few patterned cushions, and a pair of planters flanking the doorway to create a

polished, welcoming feel. Look for low-maintenance greenery or seasonal florals to liven things up without adding to your weekend to-do list

Get Smart About Security
AUCTIONS VALLEY HEALTH
Convenience and security can also get a front porch facelift. Adding an electronic deadbolt is one of the simplest ways to upgrade your door’s function without replacing the entire entry system. New models— like those from Brinks—offer features such as fingerprint access, keypad entry and even smartphone control. No more fumbling for keys when your hands are full of groceries or beach bags.
Finishing Touches
Think of your porch as the cover of your home’s story. A fresh wreath, a bench or rocking chair, and maybe a little wind chime go a long way toward setting the tone. And if your mailbox or house numbers are looking dated, this is a great time to swap those, too.
The front porch may be the first thing guests see, but with a few thoughtful updates, it might just become your favorite space, too.

Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LBYL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary this October and we have a 23-year-old daughter who lives out of state. Thank you, LBYL!

How Apartment Renters Can Cut Energy Costs and Save Big
(StatePoint) With economic uncertainty and soaring housing prices putting homeownership out of reach for many Americans, apartment living is on the rise. But if you’re a first-time renter, one often-overlooked aspect of apartment life may come as a surprise: the energy bill.
While you may expect to pay for electricity or gas usage inside your unit, you might not realize you could also be footing the bill for energy used elsewhere in the building.
“In apartment complexes, your
energy costs may also include a share of the cost of heating and cooling common spaces, such as lobbies, hallways, fitness centers and recreational rooms,” said Timothy J. Harper, president and CEO of Nationwide Energy Partners, a Columbusbased company that specializes in energy management for multi-family communities. “You might not always be aware of it because it’s sometimes baked into your rent or utility bill and not called out separately.”
Harper advises that whether you’re apartment hunting
SUDUKO
or already settled in, it’s wise to ask a few key questions: Are utilities individually metered? Do you pay the energy provider directly or is it bundled into your rent? Does your building use a third-party service that also offers tools to monitor and reduce your usage?
“These details can help you understand what’s driving your energy costs,” Harper said. “Because after rent, utilities are typically your next biggest expense.”
While as a renter you may not have the authority to install new appliances or upgrade insulation,

there are several simple strategies that can make a noticeable difference in monthly bills:
Adjust the Thermostat: If your unit allows it, slightly adjusting your thermostat – lower in winter, higher in summer –can significantly cut energy use. Portable fans or space heaters can sometimes be
more efficient than relying solely on central systems, as long as they’re used safely.
Seal the Leaks: Older units can suffer from drafty windows and doors. Removable weather stripping and draft stoppers – available at most hardware stores – can provide inexpensive insulation and reduce heating or cooling loss.
Use Curtains Wisely: Blackout or thermal curtains can help regulate indoor temperature. Keep them closed on hot days to block out sun and open them during winter daylight hours to naturally warm your space.

“The key to saving on your apartment energy bill is understanding how your specific building operates and making small changes to optimize your personal energy use,” Harper said.
