Every patient in our area miss potentially lifesaving cancer treatment

because they are too ill to drive themselves and are unable to find a ride. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program provides free transportation to and from cancer treatment. The program needs volunteers to coordinate rides, as well as volunteer drivers. Gabe Stillman advances to IBC finals and wins Gibson Guitar Award

The 35th Annual International Blues Challenge (IBC) was held January 23rd-26th, 2019 in Memphis, TN. The purpose of this event, a production of the Blues Foundation, is to bring blues musicians as solo/duo performers and in band formats, together in the “belly of the blues”, Memphis TN. 80 solo/duo performers and 101 bands congregated on historic Beale Street and “challenged” each other over four days; all vying through the 3-day judged elimination process, to reach the finals and the main stage of the Orpheum Theatre. Reaching this stage in front of thousands of people and many industry leaders in their respective fields can be

a dream come true for many, and life-changing, careerchanging event for others.

With the Blues Foundation affiliate backing of the Billtown Blues Association (BBA), Williamsport native Gabe Stillman and his band, Colin Beatty, Jesse Roedts, and Shane Sager, went, delivered impressive performances, and achieved their dream, landing in the finals with eight bands out of the starting 101.

Although the band did not end up placing in the top three bands, shortly before they announced the top three highest scoring bands, they announced that Stillman was the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Gibson Guitar Award! This is

awarded to the best guitarist who performed in the finals.

Needless to say, Stillman was shocked and extremely excited, along with the rest of the twenty Billtown Blues Association members in the audience.

“The BBA has watched Gabe mature physically and musically from his first appearance on the Billtown stage in 2009 as a 14-year-old, to the huge accomplishment achieved by him and his band landing in the finals at the 2019 International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN,” said Bonnie Tallman, Executive Director of the Billtown Blues Association. “Along the way Gabe as never wavered his focus on, or devotion to, the

music he loves. We at Billtown Blues could not be more proud of his accomplishments. Gabe also believes in giving back, having served the BBA as a volunteer for many years, and now an active member of the BBA Core planning group.”

Stillman is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, as well as an alumnus and current instructor at Williamsport›s Uptown Music Collective.

dream come true so quickly, said Uptown Music Collective Executive Director, Dave Brumbaugh. “In 2012 Gabe traveled to the IBC as a teenager with the Collective’s first entry in the IBC’s Youth Showcase, The Youngblood Blues Band.

While there we all watched the finals and the presentation of the Gibson Guitar Award, and I know he imagined what it would be like to be on that stage.

Just seven years later, after a

lot of hard work, dedication, and patience he made it. All of us at the Uptown Music Collective are very proud of his accomplishments, both as a musician and as a person.”

Also participating in the 35th Annual IBC, representing the BBA, was Chris LaRose from Lock Haven in the solo/duo category. LaRose advanced to the semifinals with a performance that was creative and beautifully executed as it took the audience on a historic blues journey, selecting songs from the early ’20s and even one from the 1700s.

The Billtown Blues Association, now in their 30th year, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect, and promote this important art form, and to provide opportunities for our own local and regional musicians who have chosen to devote their time and talent to the blues.

They thank The Gabe Stillman Band and Chris LaRose for making it all worthwhile.

LEWISBURG, (Pa.) –\ Preparations for Packwood House Museum’s Annual Fundraising Dinner are underway. This year’s dinner, held on April 6th at 7 p.m., will feature regional cuisine from around the United States. Created and served by the students of The School of Business and Hospitality at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, the evening will start in the Reception Room with drinks and hors d’oeuvres from the Pacific Northwest, including smoked

salmon, Asian-influenced beef, and tofu. After moving to the Dining Room, a New Orleans appetizer of smoked duck ham with pears and onions will begin the meal, followed by New England clam chowder for the soup course. Next, from Wisconsin, a pear salad with blue cheese and shallot vinaigrette will be served.

After an intermezzo of tropical citrus sorbet, a South West seafood course of chipotléseared scallop with pear and sundried tomato polenta will be served, followed by a Heartland-style entrée of carved herb-and-garlic-crusted loin of beef with classic au jus lie and potato cake. While a dessert of Florida key lime pie and coconut panna cotta is being prepared, guests will be treated to a tour of the first floor of the museum by Jennifer Snyder, administrator of Packwood House Museum.

The memorable evening will conclude as the diners retire to the Reception Room to enjoy

an aperitif and reminisce about this unforgettable evening.

Raffle tickets for the fundraiser are on sale in the Museum’s Tour Center at 15 North Water Street, Lewisburg, or from any Museum Member, and cost $5.00 each or six for $25.00.

The winning ticket holder, drawn at 3 p.m. on March 16, 2019, in the Tour Center, will share the gourmet meal with seven guests in the Museum’s Dining Room April 6th.

All proceeds from the ticket sales benefit Packwood House Museum. Supporting this annual fundraising event offers the winner an opportunity to entertain family and friends in a unique setting at a surprisingly low cost and to sustain Packwood House Museum and its positive contribution to life in the Susquehanna Valley.

Uptown Music Collective to bring Women of Pop to the Community Theatre League Starting on Thursday, February 21st and running through Saturday, February 23rd, the Uptown Music Collective will bring its new show, Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas, to the Community Theater League in Williamsport for their now yearly three-night /four performance stand. This exciting performance will feature the music of outstanding female artists, including Adele, Alicia Keyes, Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, Rhianna, and more, brought to life by the school’s talented performers in the intimate setting of the CTL. This show is sponsored in part by M&T Bank & The Hartman Group Although the word today is often used in a negative way, a “diva” is traditionally a celebrated female singer and a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, film and popular music. “In the world of popular music, women took the mantle of leadership in the late ’90s and have reigned supreme in that world to the current day,” said Uptown Music Collective Executive Director, Dave Brumbaugh. “This concert will showcase our talented female vocalists delivering powerful performances on hit song after hit song by some of the most important female vocalists of the last eighteen years”.

Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas is based around the music of three wildly popular artists. Alicia Keys was composing songs by age 12 and was signed at 15 years old

by Columbia Records. Her first album, Songs in A Minor, was critically and commercially successful. That success was soon followed by The Diary

of Alicia Keys in 2003 which won four Grammy Awards.

Today she is considered a musical icon of the first order and was named by Billboard as the top R&B artist of the 2000s decade. Adele’s debut album “19” brought her a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009. She then took the world by storm in 2012 with her enormously popular second album “21”, which sold over 31 million copies. Beyoncé first found success as a member of the vocal group Destiny’s Child in the 1990’s. In the years since she has found success in both Film, and as a performer earning five Grammy awards for her first album “Dangerously in Love”, and continuing that success selling over 100 million records as a solo artist and being named the Top Radio Songs Artist of the Decade and Top Female Artist of the 2000s decade in 2009 by Billboard. Other artists to be featured in this epic performance will by Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Jessie J. and more.

“This performance is a labor of love for our core group of female vocalists,” said Brumbaugh. “For many, it’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to bring this music to the stage, and the intimate environment of the Community Theater League is the perfect venue for this powerful, entertaining and highly emotional performance. Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas will feature Collective students who have been

diligently preparing for this event for over two months.

Along with the live music, there will be a professional grade light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also direct the show. There is also a group of younger students, called “Tech Monkeys” who will serve as stage technicians.

The cast for the show is drawn from the Uptown Music Collective’s much heralded Special Performance Group 1.

This show is produced by UMC Alum, Alexis Best and is directed by Uptown Music Collective Seniors, Alexis Carnevale (WAHS) & Shayne Williams (WAHS), along with

a leadership committee that includes UMC students Leah Batman, Tate Berkey (Danville Area H.S.), Izzy Brumbaugh (WAHS), Molly Chapman (Montoursville Area H.S.), Andrew Head (Montoursville Area H.S.), Cece Lutz (WAHS), Cade Palmatier (Jersey Shore H.S.), Kenni Powell (Jersey Shore H.S.), Julia Sauers, and Eli Wilk (WAHS).
