Valley Vehicle Fin er How Much Home Can You Afford this Spring? Factors to Consider (StatePoint) The chicken or the egg? Which came first continues to fuel philosophical debates. But when it comes to buying a home, experts are pretty clear about the proper order of things -- agreeing you should fit your mortgage to your finances, not to a house. “Before you even start your search for a home this spring, it’s crucial to know how much you can afford to pay each month,” says Freddie Mac Senior Vice President, Christina Boyle, who stresses that there are a few important things

to keep in mind as you calculate this figure. Start by getting a handle on your finances. What do you earn? What do you spend? How much do you have in savings? Answering these questions will help you better understand how much home you can afford. Make a budget and use free online tools and calculators to determine how much you can afford. Remember that your monthly expenses go beyond mortgage payments, so leave some room in your budget. Whether it’s a new roof or a leaking faucet, homeownership can mean unexpected expenses. Be prepared to pay for such items, as needed. General maintenance, combined with utilities (an expense that can vary by home depending on its size and other factors), are added expenses to consider. Some neighborhoods also have homeowners’ association fees to cover the cost of upkeep of common spaces. Your lifestyle can also help 1,000’s in Stock 570-538-5522 you assess whether a parFAX: 570-538-5910 Also ticular home is right for you Hrs: M-F 8-6; Sat 8-Noon and your budget. can afford. Some points to consider are whether you want to live in a suburban or urban setting, whether you need to be near specific schools and public transportation, and the potential length of your commute. These factors can affect the cost of a home and you should determine your priorities in advance of home and mortgage hunting. Remember, getting pre–approved can help you act fast and make a confident offer, so talk to your lender now before you start shopping. A full rundown on all things homebuying, including free tools and resources, is available at myhome.freddiemac. com. This spring, be sure to prepare yourself for the homebuying experience by being well-informed and aware of what you can afford.

Valley Vehicle Fin er Buying Tires for Your Car? VALLEYWhat HO to E Consider IMPROVEMENT

(StatePoint) Purchasing new tires for your car can be frustrating: an average of two hours is spent researching tires and 89 percent of all consumers experience some sort of buyer’s remorse, according to a consumer study by Cooper Tires. To help, the experts at Cooper Tires are offering easy ways to identify when you need new tires, as well as tips on what to consider in the tire buying process. The Penny Test Tire tread should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep. Check by inserting a U.S. penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s at least a minimum acceptable amount of tread. If the top of his head is visible at any point, it’s time to replace your tires. Even before tread is worn, regularly inspect

tires for cuts, cracks, splits, punctures, bulges and uneven wear patterns. Also, replace all tires, (including full-size spares) that are 10 or more years older than their date of manufacture, or follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Know the Right Size Like with shoes, buying the proper tire size is critical. Consult the information placard found on the driver’s side doorjamb, glove box, fuel door or vehicle manufacturer’s manual, which also contains technical specifications relating to your tire, including load carrying capacity, speed rating and recommended inflation pressures. For maximum safety and performance, follow these recommendations carefully. If you don’t have this information handy, consult a tire professional to have all your questions answered, and check out the three-step tire guide from Cooper Tires, which can help you narrow down the choices by car/minivan, SUV/CUV or truck. You can find this guide at us.coopertire.com. Other Considerations There are many factors to consider when selecting tires to fit your needs, including the following: • Do you need dedicated winter tires, dedicated summer tires or all-season tires? Think about where you travel over Mufflers • Shocks• Brakes Tune-Ups •Welding the course of the year. • Do you have a long commute or take Mechanical Repairs

long road trips? Consider expected mileage, ride comfort, fuel efficiency and if the tires are quiet. • Do you have a sports car or do a lot of spirited driving? You may need tires that focus on handling and are developed for high-performance cars. • Do you drive in rain? Consider the tires’ wet braking distance. • Do you drive off-road? If you spend a significant amount of time on mud tackling adventures, dedicated off-road tires may be your best bet. At the Store Be sure to ask what services are included in the quoted price. The workshop is also appropriate for spouses and caregivers. Roughly 100,000 Pennsylvanians enroll in Medicare each year. An EPA-certified wood stove, insert or fireplace can offer your home greater comfort and efficiency and add a rustic look and natural ambiance to any room. Keep in mind that the type of wood you select to burn does matter, and understanding what your priorities are can be helpful in selecting wood varieties for your stove. For example, ash and sugar maple are both great choices if you want hotter heat, whereas cherry and oak may be lower maintenance, as they provide a slower burn. For more guidance on EPA-certified wood stoves, inserts or fireplaces visit quadrafire.com. Before firing up your wood stove, take a look at your options and select the right fuel for your needs.

Wolf Administration Urges PA Farmers to Be Counted in 2017 Agriculture Census Harrisburg, PA – Secretary Russell Redding today urged every farmer and grower in the state to step up and be counted in

the 2017 Agriculture Census so that Pennsylvania is well represented and able to inform future public policy. The U.S. Department

of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the census deadline through spring to get a complete and accurate picture of American

agriculture. Every five years, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts a nationwide count of those who earn at least $1,000 per year growing food and other crops. The data informs funding decisions, as well as food and agriculture policies and programs for the entire country. “Participating in the census is the best way for farmers to help to shape policies and decisions that affect their livelihoods and communities,” said Secretary Redding. “Farm policy, disaster relief, insurance, loans, and agribusiness are all affected by census data. Stand up and be counted, so that the numbers accurately reflect our industry.” Census questionnaires were mailed to farmers, ranchers, and growers in December 2017. The form requires approximately 50 minutes to complete, but USDA encourages farmers to complete the more convenient online form at www.agcensus.usda.gov. The online questionnaire is accessible on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. NASS will continue to follow up with producers

through the spring with mailings, phone calls, and personal visits. The online form allows users to save time by skipping sections that do not apply and provides them with automatically calculated totals. Under federal law, everyone who received the 2017 Census of Agriculture questionnaire must submit a response, even if they are not currently farming. Several 2017 census questions gather new information, including the number of farmers who are military veterans or who are actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, Reserves or National Guard. “Two percent of Americans feed us, and two percent of Americans protect us. The new census question on military service will help USDA quantify how many of these heroes have also helped put food on our tables,” said Redding. “Those who have served in the military have developed many of the same skills needed to succeed in farming — exceptional planning capabilities, an incomparable work ethic, and a commitment to serving the greater good.”

Other new questions explore food marketing practices, comparing direct sales to consumers versus sales through retailers. NASS is legally required to keep all information confidential. NASS notes several uses for census data, including: • Companies and cooperatives use the facts and figures to determine the locations of facilities that will serve agricultural producers. • Community planners and local governments use the information to target programs and services to rural residents who need them. • Elected officials use the numbers from the census when shaping farm policies and programs. • Farmers use the data to assess risk and opportunity for their own operations. For specific examples of how the census data from previous years has been used, visit Your Census. Your Story. For more information, visit www.agcensus. usda.gov or call 1-888424-7828.
