I kept on asking young primary school aged boys who were him if his mother minded him walking having a wonderful time scootering through with strangers. He walked and talked with the roundabout. This was at about 4:00pm, me all the way up Hawkins Road, across and it was quite busy. I was walking my dog the walkway to Raeburn Road and down at the time, and I asked these boys, who were Raeburn Road, almost to the intersection of dressed in local school uniforms, if they Raeburn and Holden Roads. We caught up were waiting for someone. They answered with another lady who was pushing a pram, that they were just riding through the and had her other children on bikes. He then roundabout, and this worried me. I told them left me and started going with them. I asked that they shouldn’t do this, as it is not only the mother if she knew him, and she said that dangerous for themselves, but represented a she didn’t. To me, this is a very disturbing real concern for the vehicle drivers as they situation. I would not hurt a child, and in approached the roundabout. By the time fact carry a Working With Children Card as I I had arrived there, I had heard several car do voluntary work with young girls in Years horns. When I spoke to the boys and told 3 and 4. However, not everyone has one them to go home and play, they seemed to of these cards, or would do the right thing take notice of what I was telling them, which if this trusting young child were to follow was good. However, I’m quite concerned them. Name and Address Supplied.

You are invited to the Armadale Meditation Group being referred for health reasons including stress. Monks from the Bodhinyana Buddhist Monastery in Serpentine are our main teachers for nine months of the year. For the other three months, (usually mid-July to mid-October), we have a collection of other Buddhist lay people teaching, and run a special four week beginner’s meditation course. The Community Health Building is easy to find. Go in the Armadale Health Campus entrance off Albany Highway. Once through the gates, turn immediately right. Community Health is the first small brick building immediately on the right. Go in through the main doors and turn left, there will be someone there to greet you. There is free car parking, in a well-lit car park, right outside. Please take off your shoes before entering the room but otherwise it is a normal seminar room. There is no need to bring anything. You do not need to book in, just turn up by 6.50pm. For more information, please visit armadale@bswa.org and www.dhammaloka.org.au/ armadale-group.html or call 9390 1888. Rachel Green, Coordinator.

If you would like to meditate, reduce stress or anxiety and find greater levels of calm and peace, you are welcome to join the Armadale Meditation Group. For over 25 years, we have taught people how to meditate in a relaxed environment where you don’t have to sit cross-legged on the floor – chairs are provided and it is completely free. The group meets every Tuesday evening throughout the year from 7.00pm to 8.40pm at the Community Health Building, Armadale Health Campus. Doors are locked after 7.00pm and late arrivals are not usually admitted. Throughout July and October 2014, the Armadale Meditation Group will be running a number of special beginner’s meditation courses. Each course is spread over four Tuesday evenings with the same teacher. The first series taught by Rachel Green focused on using meditation to reduce stress and anxiety, and ended on the 12th of August. The second series taught by Sister Hue Can from the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist tradition will focus on breath meditation. This course started on the 19th of August and continues on the 26th of August, 2nd and 9th of September. The third and final series taught by Rachel Green will focus on metta – loving kindness meditation. Ideal for beginners and more advanced meditators, it starts on the 16th of September and continues on the 23rd and 30th September and the 7th of October. We are run by the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. Around 50 people from all backgrounds attend, including men and women, young and old, Christian, Atheist and Buddhist. The State Government continues with its Local Government Reform process - which will result in the local governments obviously being less local. For the Jarrah ward the current proposal (if the City of Armadale grows to encompass the northern half of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale) is that it will also grow to encompass Karragullen-Roleystone - and all of Bedfordale/Mt Richon. COUNCILLORS NOTES by Caroline Wielinga

Submissions are to the Board not the City should residents wish to comment, the Council’s direction on the matter will become public shortly after its July meeting, please contact the City for details. The Karragullen Quarry is recommended for continued operation for a further 5 years with a plethora of Management Plans (Dust, Revegetation, Noise, Weeds, Dieback, Stormwater, Soil and Erosion to be audited annually) and 10m northern 100m western buffers to be fenced and revegetated as per the new revised site plan, 22 July 2014. The Urban Forest Strategy was finally adopted by Council and is a vision for predominantly the City’s more densely urban areas (eg. west of Kelmscott and Armadale) to maintain and improve tree presence. Some areas require street tree infill and some development areas could be improved with additional tree amenity. I attended the recent Planning Institute of Australia conference in Perth with the theme of “making Spaces into Places”. Essentially this is about making some areas nicer and more liveable – not an issue for Roleystone exactly, but pertinent to the large focus areas of the Armadale and Kelmscott CBD’s. It is really about access (pedestrian / bicycle), amenity (trees / art / seats) and activation (shops / libraries / parks / café dining) – these things will bring people together in a positive way and the City is aiming for these outcomes.” Disclaimer - These are the views and understanding of Cr Wielinga, for further details contact the City.

Welcome to the Roleystone-Karragullen Junior Cricket Club 2014-15 cricket season. When it comes to turning healthy young boys and girls into fine young men and women, cricket is the sport of choice. It combines teamwork with patience, concentration, coordination, physical exercise and competition, all in the great Australian outdoors. Players from past seasons should have received an invitation to register for the coming season. New player registrations were held at Roleystone IGA on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August. However, if you missed out, there is still time to register your child for the upcoming season. Please note that new players will have to provide a copy of their birth certificate to confirm their age. Our coaches are available for consultation and encourage new players to join in. We are looking to field teams in the age groups of U10’s through to U16’s. The ln2CRICKET and T20 Blast programs will also be running for all 5 to 8 year olds. Enquiries can be directed to Junior Coordinator Tim Clarke on 0417 984 160 or email enquiries to clarke.tim@bigpond.com. Roleystone-Karragullen Junior Cricket Club has a SUNSMART policy. All players must wear a hat and apply sunscreen.

Lions Clubs International began in the USA in 1917 with community service as its primary aim. Its stated objectives include funding and serving the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community; assisting financially, culturally, socially and morally the handicapped, disadvantaged and infirm of the community both directly and indirectly; encouraging service minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours. Lions Club is a secular organisation open to all persons, with over 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas in the world. There are currently 1,400 clubs in Australia and approximately 30,000 active members. The Armadale-Kelmscott Lions Club Inc. was formed in July 1971. We meet twice monthly on a Tuesday evening at Greendale Hall, Armadale, to discuss and decide business affairs. We also socialise with guest speakers, inter club visits, or visits to other organisations. The Club raises funds with a weekly Thursday night bingo at Armadale Hall. We also sell sausage sizzles at local events, the well known Lions Christmas Cakes, Lions Mints and sheep manure. Each year we donate money to many local causes including the Lions Cancer Institute, Lions Eye Research Centre, and Lions Kidney Foundation. We also support the Lions Hearing Dog program, which has placed two dogs into local homes. Community activities include our Christmas Sleigh run through the streets, provision of awards to teacher-nominated year 7 students at all local primary schools, sponsoring children in the annual Lions Children of Courage awards, donating to local hospitals, and participating in Youth Exchange Student programs with other countries. The club always comes to the fore in any local disaster or emergency situation, both physically and financially, drawing from our own Club funds, Lions Australia funds or Lions International disaster funds. This was highlighted after the Roleystone-Kelmscott bushfires, where Lions were actively involved from the start of the recovery stage. We also donated to the Margaret River bushfire appeal in that year. However, we simply need more members, or registered helpers, to enable us to serve our surrounding community. Every year we respond to many requests for help from organisations and individuals, but we need help to raise the needed funds. If you are interested in lending a hand, please call President Kevin Barratt on 0429 433 643, Membership Chairperson Phil Chinnery on 0428 420 275, or Don Coopes on 0417 778 551. On the 27th of July, the Major Sponsor Roleystone Netball Club had 3 teams participating in the Kalamunda Districts Netball Association 12’s and Under carnival. An awesome amount of fun was had by everyone who participated on the day, as you can see in the photographs. On the 2nd of August, our annual sausage sizzle/cake stall was held. Once again, our families have done themselves proud with all the help they offered, and all the delicious treats that kept coming as the day progressed. The day itself was a fantastic success, and as usual the support from all out there was phenomenal. Although we acknowledged their win in the 13’s and Over carnival in the last edition of the Valley Reporter, our Under 17’s were waiting 1. for their trophies to arrive. They’re very proud to be able to show them off now. We are getting to the pointy end of the season now, with only two rounds left. Good luck to all our teams fighting for a spot in the final 4 in their division. Come on families, let’s support all our girls at this crucial time, and 2. help get the teams over the finish line and into the finals. Don’t forget our wind-up coming up later in September! You can get more details from your coaches in the coming weeks. For all enquiries, contact Club Registrar / Secretary Sharlene Warnes at roleystonenetball@ hotmail.com, or visit our website roleystonenetballclub. wa.netball.com.au. 3. 1: Net Set Go girls from Roley Yellow. 2: Under 17’s Back Row (L-R): Sophie, Jaime, Kim, Heidi, Anna and Kate (umpire). The Armadale local Policing team would like to thank the members of the community who attended the new “Coffee with a Cop” events on Tuesdays the 22nd and 29th of July. These were several trials of what will hopefully become a regular gathering of citizens and police workers from the Armadale area, in order to encourage local community engagement and communication. The first event, held on the 22nd of July at the Haynes Shopping Centre, was a great success, with community members meeting local Police and officers from the Police Mounted Section, and discussing issues and concerns within their suburbs. The officers enjoyed listening to your opinions, and talking about how they can assist you to address and resolve these problems. A special “Thank You” to Lava Carts Café and Brumby’s Bakery for their generosity and hospitality. As a result of the first successful event, it was decided that it would become a weekly gathering at different venues, with the aim of rotating through different suburbs within the Armadale area. The next “Coffee with a Cop” event was held on the following Tuesday, the 29th, at the Roleystone Shopping Centre, from 8:00am to 10:00am. Thanks again to all those who turned out, including the crew from Channel Nine News, who made a report on the gathering. Two more “Coffee with a Cop” events quickly followed, on Tuesday the 5th, at Memorial Park Coffee

Emporium in Armadale, and on Tuesday the 12th, at Crossway Community Cafe in Kelmscott. Just a few weeks into the concept, and we are already seeing how well it is working for the Armadale local Policing teams. We have had excellent results thanks to information received from the public, including a search warrant which helped to uncover stolen property, drugs, and a stolen firearm. The Armadale local Policing teams are proactive in engaging our local community. We are aware of the requests from some of you to hold one on a weekend, as many of you work during the week, and we are looking into it. However, since we need to ensure we have sufficient staff available, Tuesday is still currently our chosen option. Armadale Police want you to pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and get to know your local police. Ask questions, tell us about your neighbourhood or share your concerns. We don’t bite, so don’t be shy! We look forward to learning more about your part of town! For further information, please contact the Armadale Police Station during normal business hours on 9399 0222, or email ArmadaleLPT@police.wa.gov.au. Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 NEWS RELEASE Gosnells Indecent Assault Armadale Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in their investigation into an indecent assault that occurred on Friday, 18 July 2014. At about 6:10pm, a 38 year old woman was walking her dog in a westerly direction along Homestead Road in Gosnells. As she passed John Okey Davis Park, she noticed a man walking towards her. As the man started to pass her he suddenly grabbed her and indecently assaulted her, before he continued walking in an easterly direction. The man is described as being in his mid to late twenties, fair skinned, approximately 180cms tall with a slim build.

He was wearing a dark black hooded jumper, red shorts and dark socks. Police would like to speak with anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident who may have seen the man or anyone acting suspiciously. Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference number 7201. This is a timely reminder for everyone to be mindful of their surroundings at all times. Phone: 0433 2137 28

By Dr Judith Congrene BSC BVMS CVA As a local mobile vet, I visit animals on rural and residential properties between Serpentine and Pickering Brook. In recent times I have observed residents who are concerned about evacuating themselves and their animals in the event of a fire. These residents live in heavily wooded bushland environments where the gradients of the land are very steep, facilitating very rapid spread of a fire attack, and greatly increasing the difficulties of defending a fire. Residents need to plan for an emergency. It may only be a matter of minutes, and there is no time to find out from DFES where to go when the roads are closed and movement is hazardous due to smoke and road congestion. A small group of animal-owning residents recently gathered at Lot 108 Springfield Road, Bedfordale, to discuss the value of this public open space as an evacuation area for families, vehicles, and animals. Residents also confirmed that their mobile phone reception was better in the public space compared to their own homes. Communication saves lives, and the findings of Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission (VBRC) 2009 state that neighbourhood safe places are a very important element to bushfire safety policy as they provide much needed shelter. There is a long list of reasons as to why this

land is vital for our safety. It provides a cleared, flat ground for residents to congregate with their families and animals with enough distance from trees and access to Albany Highway. It is therefore irresponsible of Armadale Council to ignore the findings of reviews related to recent bushfires in WA and Victoria, and remove an established safety area for our community. This area is worth more to the residents than the dollar value being sought by the Council. The State Planning commission have guidelines for determining those areas that are most vulnerable to bushfire and therefore where development should not be recommended. FORMER ROLEYSTONE THEATRE PERFORMER EASELS HERSELF IN FOR A BRUSH WITH PICASSO’S WOMEN For All Aspects Of Plumbing And Gas Including Electronic Leak Detection

Former Roleystone Theatre performer Breeahn Jones is helping deliver a fascinating insight into the wives and lovers of Pablo Picasso this August. Written by Brian McAvera and presented by Blak Yak Theatre at Chrissie Parrott Arts, Picasso’s Women is a collection of eight honest, brutal, erotic and humorous monologues. The 2000 play allows the women to give their point of view and uncover their buried histories while relating their lives to Picasso’s art. Jones is appearing as Marie-Therese Walter, who was 17 when she became one of Picasso’s mistresses. “He was in his 40s and, by all accounts, spent most of her life in love with him, even after Picasso had moved on,” she said. “She even bore his child but had to put ‘father unknown’ on the birth certificate. “Marie-Therese eventually killed herself not long after Picasso’s death demonstrating that, even after they had been parted for years, she was still devoted to him.” The main challenge for Jones is learning the lengthy monologue. “Learning lines is always difficult but when it’s just yourself on stage you have to make sure you know the script inside out,” she said. “Engaging the audience is also a massive challenge to ensure the performance is interesting.” Involved in the performing arts since primary school, Jones has appeared in numerous productions with Stirling, Roleystone, Limelight, Marloo, Kwinana and Melville Theatres, the MS Society,

Playlovers and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA. In 2011, she was named best female musical theatre performer at the annual Finley Awards for her role in Side Show and received a best actress in a play nomination for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice in 2013. “As someone who does mostly musical theatre, Picasso’s Women appealed because it’s a chance to do some ‘straight’ acting and perform a lengthy monologue, which is something I haven’t had to do on stage before,” she said. “The untold stories of these women were also something that attracted me – I knew of Picasso but very little of the women in his life. I’m sure the public will be the same and some opinions of the artist may be changed after hearing these stories.” Kimberley Shaw, director of Jones’ monologue, said she felt compelled to be involved with Picasso’s Women. “I was a founding member of Blak Yak Theatre and this show celebrates the theatre’s 20th anniversary,” she said. “It’s unusual outside of a musical to direct with other people. Needing to work within boundaries, on a shared setting with a shared artistic vision, is a new and different experience for me. “Luckily, I have a great working relationship with Breeahn – I have directed her five times before and have faith in her talents, dedication and ability.” Picasso’s Women plays at 7.30pm August 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 and 30 with four of the eight monologues each night. Tickets are $25, $22 concession and $40 for a double ticket (covering the eight monologues over two nights) – book through www.trybooking.com. Chrissie Parrott Arts is at 4 Sussex Street, Maylands.

The City of Armadale, City of Gosnells and Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale are urging low income households to register for the ground-breaking Switched on Homes electricity trial commencing in 2015. The program is the first in Western Australia to monitor energy use in low income households in real time. Results from the study will be used by the Councils to provide feedback to the government on the electricity needs of Western Australian households at a time when electricity charges have spiked with yet another increase of 4.5 per cent per unit from 1 July 2014. The trial requires participants to complete a telephone survey in 2014, receive one text message per week in 2015, and then complete another telephone survey in 2016. A qualified electrician will fit participating homes with a metering device that gives

The National Tree Planting Day took place on Saturday 26 July 2014. Despite the wet and wild weather, 35 committed City of Armadale residents and Westfield Scouts generously volunteered their time at a community planting session in Seville Grove. Over the past two years, the Seville Grove reserve has undergone a huge transformation. From an open space abused by motorbikes and rubbish dumping, it has evolved into an attractive and welcoming reserve. More than 10,000 native seedlings have been planted in and around a newly constructed wetland aimed at reconnecting the river and its natural flood plain. The planting continued on the day with volunteers’ infilling native seedlings to encourage native fauna to grow back in the area. The Armadale / Kelmscott Lions Club rewarded the hard-working volunteers with some delicious pancakes at the end of a wet morning. The National Tree Planting Day was coordinated by the City of Armadale and supported by Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group (AGLG). “Planting at Riverside Reserve assists with AGLG’s ongoing work revegetating and restoring the natural environment across bush and river foreshore sites in the Cities of Armadale and Gosnells,” said Mayor Henry Zelones. “Pride and Prejudice” to life on stage

Kelmscott Senior High School alumnus Lynda Hunt, who also lived in Kelmscott and Forrest Lakes for 30 years, is appearing in a love story from one of the most widely-read writers of all time at Limelight Theatre this August. Adapted from the Jane Austen novel by Jon Jory and directed by Elinor King, “Pride and Prejudice” features all the wit and romance of the 1813 classic, channelled into a refreshingly fast-paced and engaging stage version. Elizabeth Bennet is a complex young woman who doesn’t think marriage is an urgent priority, despite her four sisters, overzealous matchmaking mother and a string of unsuitable suitors. When she meets Mr Darcy, she’s sure that she despises him - but after numerous battles of wits, she finds her entire world upside down as the enigmatic man seems more and more appealing. Hunt plays Lady Catherine De Burgh, a woman who is rich beyond belief. “She’s not a very nice person at all, and is used to people bowing and scraping to her,” she said. “Elizabeth refuses to kowtow to her, and the tension between them rises. I get to be very nasty in this part, and thoroughly enjoy doing it – it’s so nice to be nasty and not get into trouble for it. The main challenge is maintaining the posture for the role because it’s so difficult to keep your body stiff. I also have to be conscious of projecting my voice without yelling, especially

brooktonvalleylandscaping@westnet.com.au

given I’m very cross with Elizabeth most of the time. Then again, coming from a family of eight children, it’s easy for me to talk loudly.” “Pride and Prejudice” appealed to Hunt simply because she has always loved Jane Austen’s books. “But until I got this part, I had never seen any of the movies based on the book,” she said. “I love to use my own imagination to conjure up images of what I think the characters would look like.” Director Elinor King describes “Pride and Prejudice” as the original romantic comedy. “Boy meets girl and they dislike each other immediately, but over the course of a year they realise just how wrong first impressions can be,” she said. “Even though it’s set in the 19th century, it’s a timeless tale that’s just as relevant today as it was in 1813. I have loved ‘Pride and Prejudice’ ever since watching the BBC version as a child, and have always wanted to see it on stage. Although there are plenty of talented female actresses in Perth, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of shows with strong roles for younger women, so I decided to change that.” “Pride and Prejudice” will play at 8:00pm on August 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for concession and $16 for children. To book, call 9571 8591 between 9:00am and midday, from Monday to Friday, or go to www.limelighttheatre. com. Limelight Theatre is located on Civic Drive, Wanneroo.

LOCAL KITCHEN DESIGNER IS FINALIST IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

KTC Design’s designer, Glenda Roff, is a finalist in the 2014 Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi) Awards in the Western Australian Medium Sized Kitchen Category. Winners will be announced later this month. Roleystone local Glenda has a degree in Interior Design from Curtin University, and has been focusing her talents on kitchen design for 6 years with KTC Design, a Kelmscott family business of over 25 years standing. She also teaches kitchen design for Designer Training. Her work will be judged on design, innovation, layout, compliance with relevant standards, and the presentation drawings the client was given. The client brief was challenging and exciting; having spent many years in the hospitality industry, the client was keen to bring some of the practicality she knew was possible to her own kitchen, and also to introduce some of the industrial feel. She was drawn to an eclectic mix of materials, and favoured a mixture of concealed & display storage, all of which she hoped could be used to infuse some of her own personality. As her husband worked away for long periods, she was the primary client, but of course they were both involved in the design process. The original floor plan was quite spacious, but not well utilised. A door from the kitchen to the laundry was unnecessary and restricted wall space in both rooms. The area set aside for refrigeration was surplus to the clients’ requirements, whilst the pantry was tightly confined and difficult to access. The U-shaped bench space was extensive, but being largely in front of moving windows, only a constricted area in the back corner was set aside for cooking. The bench top also encompassed a large floor space which created an inefficient work environment. A revised footprint was the first priority to improve this space. The doorway between the bricked in corner pantry and wall oven was bricked up, and the redeemed space was used to create a larger, more accessible, double door pantry (which included housing for the rarely used microwave). The steam oven is placed slightly higher than usual, as both the clients are of above average height, and intend to stay in this house for a considerable time. This allowed for a warming drawer under the ovens which was still comfortable to access. The forty-five degree angles of the window bench were played down by matching the bench and door colours, to allow the island design and finishes to be the heroes. To meet the client’s brief of a balance between practicality and personality, Glenda greatly increased the quantity and efficiency of the storage, without concealing everything in a minimalist way. Display areas in open shelves and glass-fronted doors allow for small scale detail and interest, and an expression of who the clients are. Even the rangehood provided additional storage space for commonly used items. The material selections were crucial in providing the optimal mix of practicality and feel for each zone. The main working area has been decreased in size for efficient food preparation. The cabinetry is predominantly drawers outside of the pantry, including under the sink and pull-out spice rack, adding to the ergonomic functioning of the kitchen. A combination of lighting strategies was used in the kitchen. LED downlights recessed in the ceiling, bulkhead and under overhead cabinets provide general and task lighting. Additional LED luminaires are built into the top of the glass door cabinets to light the contents. Pendant lights provide light for both work and pleasure at the island, supplementing the rangehood lighting over the cooktop, as well as providing a focal point for the seating area. The client said “We had spent 5 years deciding to renovate or not. Glenda Roff from KTC Design was very patient with the many options we gave her. We are thrilled with the outcome, it’s a piece of art”.

ROLEYSTONE FOUR BRING HOME GOLD FOR WA

Roleystone Women’s Hockey Club recently had four players selected for the State Masters over 60s team. Alma Davies, Jacquie Colleran, Dale Keiley and Delys Palmer travelled to Darwin in July to represent Western Australia in the 2014 Australian Hockey Championships along with Ros Flood as Team Manager. Ros is also Roleystone’s A grade coach. The Hills Association was lucky enough to have five representatives make the gold medal winning team, with Pat Halden from Rangers helping to make up the over 60’s team. Tracey Halden and Nyaree Brown also represented the Hills Association for the State Masters Competition in a different age category. The West Australian team won their gold medals in an exciting grand final against NSW, who were the only team that defeated WA in the play-offs. At full time the teams

were drawn at two all and went to penalty shoot-outs. The closely fought match was still drawn at the end of two sets of shoot-outs and it became a game of sudden death with WA finally gaining the edge for the win. One member of the team, Dale Keiley, also won gold representing Australia in her age category at the Masters World Cup in Rotterdam in the Netherlands during June. Her team defeated The Netherlands team to win gold. On the home front Roleystone is having a fantastic season with both of our A teams guaranteed a spot in the finals while our B team is developing several new players and hoping for a place in finals too. L-R: Alma Davies, Tracey Halden, Nyaree Brown, (back), Jacquie Colleran, Dale Keiley, Delys Palmer, Pat Halden and Manager Ros Flood.

The exhibition, titled “Creative Journey”, is a visual illustration of Stephanie’s artistic journey, expressed through her personal exploration of painting styles. Stephanie hopes that the freedom and joy she has had to paint what she feels will shine through to her audience. It has been a particularly busy year for Stephanie with her art. Firstly, an exhibition titled “The Spirit of the Thoroughbred”, the brainchild of horse trainer and 6PR radio announcer Bob Maumill, was held at Ascot Racecourse. Artists were invited to visit horse stud farms at Ascot Racecource for early morning training sessions and raceday. Dan Morton, one of WA’s leading trainers invited artists to his Ascot stables, resulting in a very successful exhibition. In April, Stephanie hosted Barry and Lucy McCann, two leading watercolourists from Armidale, New South Wales, who have both been featured on popular television art show, “Colour Your Life”. Barry, in particular, has

entered the Archibald Portrait Exhibition, and had his paintings hung three times. Stephanie couldn’t resist asking Barry to paint her portrait, and was obliged in her Roleystone studio, with fifteen appreciative artists learning and observing. The honour of being the Artist in residence at the 40th Anniversary of Army Art has been extremely humbling for Stephanie. In addition, Stephanie has been teaching watercolours part time at Tresillian Community Centre, and entering many art exhibitions, including the Minnawarra Exhibition in Armadale. Stephanie couldn’t think of any better way of spending a day than painting to her heart’s content in her beautiful studio in Roleystone. Stephanie would like to thank Katherine for providing the opportunity to showcase her artworks. The opening for the exhibition will take place on the 24th of August, starting at 4:30pm. All are welcome. To find out more about Stephanie and her work, feel free to go to her website, www. stephanieboyle.com.au.

When the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter (DRWS) was targeted by thieves and left without water, Caleb Holyoak-Roberts, a nineyear-old member of the Roleystone community, was the first person to offer assistance. On Sunday 27 July, DRWS had its mains water pump disconnected and stolen leaving the shelter with limited water for volunteers to go about their business of caring for wildlife in rehabilitation. Caleb heard about the incident via a community web page. Instead of receiving gifts for his birthday, he suggested to friends that if they really wanted to give something, they could offer money which he would donate to a charity of his choice. Within a week, Caleb arranged to visit the shelter to present his gift of $250. DRWS volunteers were excited to hear about the donation, and have been overwhelmed by the generosity offered by a young man who has only just turned nine. The donation will help the shelter cover costs of replacing the water

LITTER OF THE MONTH There have been some wonderful foster carers in Roleystone and surrounds doing a fabulous job at ensuring these beautiful animals find loving homes. In some circumstances they have had a pretty disheartening start to life, but with ample love, care and affection, these foster cats and kittens are now looking for new homes. Violet recently turned up at a house in Forrestdale looking for someone to care for her. Despite knowing they couldn’t keep her, Violet stayed with the family for two months. She was very affectionate and gentle and played so well with the family’s children. They brought her in to Armadale-Byford Veterinary Hospital to try and find a micro-chip. Unfortunately she wasn’t micro-chipped but she was sterilised. Violet is a very smoochy and affectionate girl. She loves to sit on your lap and get her belly scratched. Her green eyes are stunning and her coat pattern is beautiful. This sweet little girl is in desperate need of a warm, loving home. If you think that Violet would suit your family, please contact us at the ArmadaleByford Veterinary Hospital regarding the adoption process. Our cats have all been fully vet checked, vaccinated, micro-chipped and sterilised. To view the cats available for adoption, please go to the Armadale-Byford Veterinary Hospital Facebook page, and for more information, please call the animal hospital on 9399 4299.

LOCAL STARS: THE GIBB CHALLENGE The Gibb Challenge is an annual 700-kilometre socially competitive team relay mountain bike event that raises community awareness and funds for charity. I created the event in 2007 and since then the event has raised more than $5M for our charity partners. This year the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was selected as our event’s principal beneficiary and while the campaign is still realising valued donations, we’ve raised almost $500,000 to support their invaluable services to regional Western Australia. This year’s event was staged between Sunday 17th and Thursday 21st of May 2014 with 400 riders, their supporters and ‘Bloody Heroic Volunteers’ representing 65 teams from every state and territory in Australia, joining our fat tyre pilgrimage along the iconic stock route of the Gibb River Road from the deep port town of Derby, to the Million Acres Wilderness Park of El Questro. It’s an amazing event with overnight camping at Imintji Community, Mount Elizabeth Station, Ellenbrae Station, Home Valley Station and El Questro. Our dusty peloton enjoys a week of cycling fellowship with plenty of cheers, tears and beers forming part of the community celebrations of the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster. A few years ago the event fully subscribed in 17 minutes, so I was forced to utilise a ballot system to select successful team nominations from the hundreds received each year.

Teams can be formed with between two and six riders and up to two non-riding support personnel. The event’s team relay format encourages participation over competition and allows novice riders with a modest level of fitness, the ability to participate and enjoy a life defining Kimberley adventure. Maybe a couple of Roleystone teams are up for the Challenge in 2015? So why? My wife and I left Roleystone in 2002 with a two-year plan but fell in love with the Kimberley; the weather, culture, landscape and communities. Our plan extended to nearly ten, with two and a half years in Kununurra and seven years in Broome. I had participated in the Wild West Bike Tour (Geraldton) and the Karratha to Broome Bike Marathon and thought that the Kimberley could host a cycling event like no other. Any reason to ride through the Kimberley with a few hundred new best mates, share a couple of beers and raise a truckload of money for some very worthy causes seemed like a pretty good idea. We’ve since returned to Roleystone, though our home is a tragic tribute to the Kimberley. I’m even trying to grow a couple of boabs in the garden! The Gibb Challenge continues to be a wonderful excuse to return to God’s Country each year and soak up the timeless beauty of the Kimberley. The real stars though are the participating teams. I’m just the one with the cool hobby that brings it all together. On Friday the 25th of July, over 2000 volunteers recruited from schools, community organisations, small businesses and corporations converged onto a 34 hectare site at Whiteman Park to plant over 100,000 native plant seedlings. A siren sounded at noon, at which time volunteers from 44 teams, each team consisting of up to 50 people, armed with carry bags filled with 50 seedlings each, a trowel and some fertiliser, commenced planting. One hour later the siren sounded again, ending the planting frenzy. The result? All seedlings planted within the hour! The previous record was 99,103 and Men of the Trees event organiser Paula Galvin said that record was well and truly broken on the day, although their win was yet to be official. Aerial photography by a drone, videography, official timekeeping and independent witness documentation has been submitted to the Guinness Record Administration, hopefully to proclaim Men of the Tree’s 100K Greening Challenge a success. The core mission of Men of the Trees has always been to engage with the community to grow and plant trees, and to promote an awareness of the role of trees in the environment, and thereby their contribution to the welfare of mankind. That mission was well and truly accomplished with this achievement. If you would like be get involved with this mission, you’ll have plenty of chances at the next round of coming events, including: • The Festival of the Trees Open Day, on the 6th of September, at the corner of Amherst Road and Stirling Crescent in Hazelmere. • Rockingham Open Day, on the 20th of September, at Rockingham Golf Course. • The Riverside Ramble on the 12th of October. • The Zig Zag Arts Festival, on the 26th of October. • Have a Go Day, on the 12th of November. For more information, contact Men of the Trees’ fundraising, events and marketing manager Paula Galvin (on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Fridays) on 9250 1888 or 0449 758 626. FRIENDS OF CHURCHMANS BUSHLAND FORMED It is extremely pleasing to report success following publicity in the July Valley Reporter inviting community members to become involved in the management of the magnificent Churchmans Bushland. A Friends of Churchmans Bushland has been formed with very keen and talented locals from Roleystone, Bedfordale and Kelmscott. A management plan compiled by the previous community group in 1998 is being reviewed and updated with current information to take the group forward. The 620 hectare site has many different attractions including the Canning River, Churchmans Brook, magnificent bushland, the amazing rock wall, an old airstrip, a 100-year old woolshed and much more. As a result, we are taking our time and getting to know the site

fully. With more knowledge and awareness we can identify priorities for future projects in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Wildlife. If anyone else is interested in joining, please note the Friends of Churchmans Bushland will be holding a work day on Sunday 31 August - Stocker Road entrance from 9am to 12pm. We would be only too pleased to talk to you about this magnificent area. We are also inviting a number of the original Churchmans Bushland Group to join us for a sausage sizzle at the conclusion of our morning to say thank you for all their past efforts. If you would like to join us, please email pathart1@ bigpond.com to assist with catering numbers. We would be delighted to meet with you. Pat Hart.

Perth Kilt Run - Register now and be part of a world record The City of Armadale is proud to take on the challenge for the Largest Perth Kilt Run on Sunday 14 September in Minnawarra Park, Armadale. 2013 marked the Perth, Western Australia inaugural run in the Largest Kilt Run event and this year we will once again take on the challenge. Mayor Henry Zelones said you can participate by doing the 5km Challenge, or join in the fun with the 2.5km Leisure Run while raising money for a worthwhile charity. “Perth, Canada and Perth, Scotland have been competing in this challenge for a number of years and we are keen to beat the record of our namesakes this year. “To be able to do this we need people from all over Perth. From the northern suburbs to our southern regions, from the coast to the hills - we call on all ‘Sandgropers’ to put on a kilt and take part. “Register as an individual runner, family or team. There are also prizes in a number of categories for the first male, female or team to cross the finish line, most creative outfit, youngest and oldest competitor, and even a family prize. “So bring the kids along and get the entire family involved in this challenge – to put Perth, Western Australia on the tartan world map”, said Mayor Zelones. Following the Kilt Run, continue celebrating the day with all things Scottish at WA’s largest Scots-themed event, the Highland Gathering – held every year right here in Armadale at Minnawarra Park. It will feature Scottish and Irish dancing, a Medieval Fair, Strong Men Competition, Celtic food, arts and craft, children’s activities and much more. Please note the Perth Kilt Run is a wheelchair accessible event. For more information on how to register for the run and organise your kilt, visit www.armadale.wa.gov.au.

Trade Support Loans to boost apprenticeship completion The Trade Support Loans program offering up to $20,000 to eligible apprentices commenced on July 21, 2014. Canning MHR Don Randall said the loans would encourage more people to enter into a trade and help them complete their qualification by easing the financial burden. Apprentices in the Canning electorate will have access to $20,000 over the entire period of their training with more support provided during the initial years when it’s most needed. Trade Support Loans will provide up $8,000 in the first year of the apprenticeship, $6,000 in the second, $4,000 in the third and $2,000 in the fourth. When an apprentice completes their training, 20 per cent of the loan, or up to $4000, will be immediately deducted from the total of their loan. Mr Randall said like HELP loans for tertiary students, Trade Support Loans will be repayable once apprentices are earning a sustainable income – currently $53,345. He said the loans will target occupations on the National Skills Needs List such as plumbers, diesel mechanics, electricians and fitters, as well as priority areas in horticulture and agriculture. “This program will see more people complete their training and get out into the workforce,” he said. “This will help boost the skills of Australian workers, improve our nation’s productivity and help build a stronger economy.” For further information on the program, contact your local Australian Apprenticeships Centre or visit www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/ trade-support-loans.
