2015 for Kofukan Karate Roleystone The first week of February has not only brought the start of a new school year for many students, it was also the first week of a new karate term. We welcomed a number of new students in both the junior and senior class, as well as some exciting new additions to our training equipment for the club. With the assistance of Sam Saffioti from Roleystone Real Estate, we purchased 10 new re-breakable boards and 10 martial arts blocker for use in our training sessions. Roleystone Real Estate has been a great sponsor of our club for many years, from donating to our Roleystone Fire-Fight Tournament in 2011, to sponsoring our students to represent our state in the Australian Karate Federation National Championships. Thank you Sam! Our junior students thoroughly enjoyed using the new equipment and left the session with some nice big smiles. We have some exciting new events coming in 2015, including beach training, weapons sessions, civi nights and interclub tournaments. Just watch this space! Brooke Williams.

Get into some Eco Adventures in 2015 If you’re looking for new outdoor adventures in 2015, look no further than the City of Gosnells’ new Eco Adventures program. The exciting new program, which launches in February and runs until April, offers a number of exhilarating outdoor challenges and activities. These include rafting, mountain biking, orienteering, stand-up paddle boarding, quarry abseiling, bushwalking, canoeing and even an opportunity to zip 50m down a flying fox. The new program had been planned to cater for families, couples and individuals. Perth has amazing weather in summer and autumn, so it’s the perfect time to get active outdoors and take advantage of this glorious state we live in. There’s a fantastic family challenge day in March where families can make rafts and then take part in a fun paddle competition. With many activities for individuals as well, it’s a great way to set yourself a personal challenge or tick something off your bucket list. All Eco Adventures activities will be run and supervised by professionals and assistance will be available if required by participants. Registrations are essential. Please email plucas@ gosnells.wa.gov.au or call the City’s Leisure Services team on 9397 3111. Prices and guidelines: Quarry abseiling $50 per person Valley to Valley trek $5 with light lunch provided Family challenge day* $70 per family (2 adults, 2 children) Mountain biking $10 per person Orienteering $10 per person Stand-up paddle boarding $20 per person * Children under 16 years can take part provided they are with an adult. Community Garden Art Workshop Get creative this summer by joining in a workshop to paint artwork for the Southern River Community Garden (SRCG). The City is hosting two free workshops to give local residents the opportunity to get involved in creating quirky and colourful art pieces for the garden. No experience is required and community members of all ages and skill level are invited to join in. Whether you’re a beginner, a budding artist or you’ve been painting for years, this is a great opportunity to tap into your creative side and have a go. The first workshop will take place during the Illuminate Festival being held at Pioneer Park, Gosnells on Saturday, 21 February. Everyone is welcome to drop by between 5-7.30pm to get involved and registrations are not required for this workshop. Community members are also welcome to join in a second workshop, to continue painting the artwork and make the final touches. The second workshop is on Saturday 28 February at the SRCG, Anaconda Drive, Gosnells from 9.30-11.30am. Morning tea will be provided, however registrations are essential for this workshop. Call the Community Development Team on 9397 3123 or email community@gosnells.wa.gov. au to book your place. The SRCG is an exciting shared space within the Southern River College taking shape at the rear of Southern River College on Anaconda Drive. Ruban Birch selected in State Under 20’s Rugby Union Side Congratulations to 18-year-old Roleystone local Ruban Birch for his selection in the State Under 20’s Rugby Union side. An Old Guildfordian and a captain of the first 15 in his final year of school, Ruban has trained very hard over the last six months to gain enough muscle mass and strength to secure a spot at a relatively young age. A kind sponsorship donation from a couple of local businesses has helped Ruban with the significant commitment required for the demanding training program at Rugby WA headquarters in Floreat four nights per week. Ruban would like to thank Michael and Jodie from Hansen Environmental, and Lu Lu Birch from Magic Hands Massage, for their generous support. The Valley Reporter would like to wish Ruban all the best for the tour to Adelaide this month.

There have been some wonderful foster carers in Roleystone and surrounds doing a fabulous job at ensuring these beautiful animals find loving homes. In some circumstances they have had a pretty disheartening start to life, but with ample love, care and affection, these foster cats and kittens are now looking for new homes. These beautiful kittens were left to fend for themselves in an abandoned house. Thankfully, a local resident managed to save them. Starving and terrified, she took them home and fed them. The lovely client brought them into the hospital and one of our dedicated foster carers kindly

looked after them until they were ready to be rehomed. These sweet innocent babies are all looking for their forever home. If you know someone who would be able to give them a loving home, please call us on 9399 4299. The cats have all been fully vet checked, vaccinated and microchipped. To view our cats available for adoption, please go to the Armadale-Byford Veterinary Hospital Facebook page, and for more information, please call the veterinary hospital on 9399 4299. Without the ongoing support from The Valley Reporter, we wouldn’t have had so much success rehoming our kittens and cats.

Hills Festival of Theatre award-winner Sophie Prober is performing as Cinderella in a comedy featured in FRINGE WORLD this February. Presented by Out of the Bag Productions at Playlovers Theatre in Floreat, The Broken Slipper is a black comedy about Cinderella facing the Fairytale Tribunal after breaking the rules by not marrying Prince Charming. Also featuring Red Riding Hood’s grandma, a menopausal Snow White and Hansel and Gretel’s wicked witch, the play picked up a swag of awards at the 2014 Dramafest, including best new writing, director and overall production. “Cinderella is still the graceful princess we all know and love but now she’s also a feisty, street-smart independent woman,” Prober said. “She takes matters into her own hands and is not afraid to stand up and fight for what she believes in. “The hardest thing has been developing a character still recognisable as the traditional Cinderella but then adding the sass and toughness required for the play.” Acting since 2012, Prober has performed with Stirling Theatre, Stirling Players Youth, ARENAarts, Blak Yak Theatre, Playlovers, and Laughing Horse Productions, and has appeared in numerous award-winning productions including Rabbit and Outside the Box. In 2014, she directed Level 12 and won the best small ensemble award at the Hills Festival of Theatre. Prober said The Broken

Slipper appealed because she loved a good twist on a well-known story. “The script is hilarious and clever but still has a strong message,” she said. “It has a range of tones, beginning light and humorous, and then transitioning to a more serious and touching feel before ending again on a lighter note. “This has allowed a more three-dimensional character to develop, making it much more stimulating for me as an actor.” The 40-minute show is written by Yvette Wall and directed by Alida Chaney, a musical theatre teacher at Malaga’s WA Stage School. “I don’t always like playing by the rules myself,” Wall said. “Through the dramatic antics of these wonderful fairy tale characters, we see the appeal of living happily ever after… but at what price?” Chaney jumped at the chance to direct The Broken Slipper, and after its initial success people suggested it should be part of FRINGE WORLD. “The play is already tried and tested and I’ve concentrated a lot on visual physicality and total ridicule to make it even more humorous,” she said. The Broken Slipper plays at 8.45pm February 19, 20, 21 and 22 with a 3.15pm matinee February 22. Tickets are $20 – book at www.fringeworld.com.au. It follows A Piece of Cake, a comedic historical romp about Marie Antoinette, also written by Wall and directed by Chaney at 7.30pm on the same dates. Playlovers is located at Hackett Hall, Draper Street (off Underwood Avenue), Floreat. FRINGE WORLD Festival 2015 will be held from January 23 to February 22. (above) Ursula Johnson as Grandma, and Sophie Prober, right, as Cinderella in The Broken Slipper. Red Riding Hood’s grandma (Ursula Johnson), Snow White (Sharon Greenock) and Cinderella (Sophie Prober, right) all feature in The Broken Slipper.

Real Estate Secrets Exposed

PROPERTY SALES IN TOP GEAR!

REAL ESTATE PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS IN 2015 HAVE STARTED WITH AN ‘ALMIGHTY BANG’ Industry analysts reports published in late 2014 predicting a slow down in Perth property sales in the first half of 2015 have been quickly dispelled. Considering that January is traditionally the slowest selling month of the calendar year…the indications clearly demonstrate 2015 being another strong year for the industry with property sales showing no signs of slowing down and prices unlikely to fall, especially with the property sectors surrounding Perth’s median housing prices. by 30 volunteers in Kelmscott. Established in August 2013, our charter is to raise money for other charities and not for profit groups within the City of Armadale, City of Gosnells, and the Shire of SerpentineJarrahdale. From the time of our establishment we have been able to donate $25,000 to a number of groups including the Animal Protection Society, PMH Foundation - Armadale Hospital, Southern Districts Support Association, Southcare Community Support, Riding for the Disabled – Oakford, Darling Range Wildlife Rescue, ARKS Rugby Union Junior Club, SES Gosnells, SES Armadale, Roleystone Volunteer Fire and Rescue, and Armadale Volunteer Fire and Rescue. In the lead up to Christmas and during the school holidays the need for funds for community groups and out of school activities

increases, and we have been able to support Armadale PCYC, Serpentine PCYC, Gosnells PCYC, Byford YMCA, Mundarda Child Care Centre, Riverdale Child Care Centre, and Wirra Birra Child Care Centre with $2,000 each towards their programmes. We would like to thank the community for their ongoing support, as these donations would not be possible without your help. We are now looking at assisting individuals and families who need special equipment for a disability and your ongoing support will make a difference to their lives. We are always looking for new volunteers to join us for whatever amount of time they can spare as well as charities and not for profit groups that could use our assistance in the area. END OF SUMMER SpEcial! Offer expires 15/3/14.

Morning Yoga classes in Minnawarra Park Start your day with free yoga classes outside in the fresh air! The City of Armadale is hosting the popular outdoor yoga fitness sessions, again this year, in the beautiful surrounds of Minnawarra Park during February and March. Mayor Zelones said it’s a great way to start the day, being outdoors in a peaceful environment while you improve your health doing something active. “This form of exercise is growing as more and more people become aware of the mental and physical benefits of yoga.” said Mayor Zelones. The gentle stretching of muscles and

joints helps to flush toxins, increases flexibility of joints, exercises different tendons and ligaments and even massages internal glands and organs of your body. “If you are 16 years and over, and interested in learning some yoga techniques, come down to the Minnawarra Park and join in these free sessions,” said Mayor Zelones. Remember to bring a towel, yoga mat and water bottle and benefit from a fabulous yoga class. The classes will be held from 6.30am to 7.30am on Mondays 16 and 23 February and 9 and 16 March.

Roleystone Community Chemist Health Advice Corner – Cold Sores or School Sores Cold sores and school sores are two relatively common infections, often confused or misdiagnosed because they occur in similar places. The causes and treatments, however, are very different. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (Type 1), and present themselves as small, itchy or painful fluid-filled blisters which generally occur on the margin of the lips, or at the base of the nostrils. There are generally four stages to a cold sore infection, starting with feeling unwell, tingling or burning in the area. The fluid-filled raised blister then appears, breaks open and weeps, forming a scab. Generally the time period from first tingling to complete healing of the lesion is one to two weeks. Ater initial infections, the cold sore virus remains dormant in the body, but subsequent infections can be triggered by fatigue, stress, trauma, the common cold, windburn or sun burn. Certain foods rich in the protein l-arginine (such as peanuts and chocolate) can trigger an outbreak. Success in treating cold sores occurs if medicines are used at the first sign of symptoms, (tingling stage) and reapplied frequently if cream forms are used. The following treatment options are available: • Antiviral tablets (three as a single dose) • Antiviral creams (applied to the blisters at least five times daily); • Creams which are a combination of antiviral agent, antibacterial agent and a local anesthetic. These are useful for established cold sores or those which may been bacterially infected; • Lysine tablets 500mg (two twice daily) helps to prevent the virus reproducing, and can be taken at lower doses to prevent a cold sore. School sores are a bacterial infection often caused by a “bug” called staphylococcus aureus, found on the surface of our skin. The infections often start as pimples and erupt into pustular type vesicles or

blisters, which weep a honey coloured fluid, drying to a dark brown crusty scab. School sores may start from insect bites which have been infected as a result of scratching or “picking” at a wound. School sores often occur in children around the mouth and under the nose, but seldom on the lips like cold sores. Being a bacterial infection, it is best to use antibiotics in cream or oral form to treat school sores. The crusty scabs should be soaked off and Betadine may be applied for short time periods to prevent infection spread. Remaining healthy, eating well and sleeping well maintains a healthy immune system so that these types of infections occur less frequently. The spread of infection can be reduced by not kissing others or touching the sores during active infection times If you are ever unsure whether the condition is a school sore or cold sore, just ask your pharmacist.

International artworks on their way! Sculpture by the Sea is pleased to welcome over 20 international sculptors to Cottesloe for this years exhibition. We have a number of returning artists along with first time exhibitors from New Zealand, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, China, UK, Czech Republic, Denmark and America. While some of the artists are still putting the finishing touches to their artworks, a number of crates and containers have been packed, sealed and have already started the journey to Australia. It can take works travelling from Europe over 45 days from departure to arrival, which means in some cases the works are in transit longer than they are on display.

The most recent work to set sail was ‘mi no.5’ (pictured) by Wen Di Zhang, a stand of pink steel mesh flamingos loaded in Xingang, China and arriving into Fremantle, WA in the coming weeks. Crating and packing the artworks is a skill in itself, especially if the work is made from a 2.5m long, 2,000kg piece of granite as is the case with Japanese sculptor, Keizo Ushio’s work ‘oushi zokei hexagonal’.

In the December edition of The Valley Reporter, I wrote about the shamanic drumming ceremony which was conducted to claim Lot 108 on Springfield Road in Bedfordale as sacred space. This was to recognise the significance of the number 108 as a spiritual number, and to honour the importance of this land to the residents and the inhabiting wildlife. Two days after the ceremony, a group of residents who have been opposing the business plan which proposed the subdivision and sale of this land by the Armadale council, presented deputations at the Development Services Committee meeting, chaired by Councillor Donna Shaw. We were overjoyed when the committee voted unanimously not to proceed with the business plan – I quickly asked if the committee would consider transferring the land to the Crown. The following week, the full council voted unanimously in support of the committee’s recommendation, and I’m very happy to say that Lot 108 will be transferred from the council back to Crown land. Apparently this is unheard of, and the council staff will need to investigate the legal process required to transfer to the Crown for Recreational and Conservation purposes. When the excitement had settled a little – which took a while – I decided to have a plaque made up and have it installed at the site of the drumming ceremony. My very grateful thanks to Mr Dennis Admiraal for his beautiful creation

It’s been two and a half years since we lost our unisex hair salon on Brookton Highway. Although we tried to return, it was out of our control and we have since been operating in Huntingdale Forum, Huntingdale. We would like to extend our appreciation to our wonderful clients that followed and supported us on this journey. We have also realised and understood it has been difficult for some clients to travel the extra distance. However, we would like to notify everyone that we are getting closer to our previous location with the opening of a brand new Karizma Hair Studio in Haynes Shopping Centre on Armadale Road, Armadale. The fit-out will start in February and we are hoping to be open to the public on 16 March 2015 if everything goes to plan. The salon will have a brand new look and feel that promises to be fresh and inviting for all our clients. We urge you to look out for the special promotions we will be running throughout the year at both salons. We do not have a contact number for the Haynes Shopping Centre salon just yet, but our Huntingdale location can be reached on 9490 5533 or you can email karizmahairstudio@ bigpond.com. least four years and two groups had reportedly bred. Several captured birds had leg bands that identified them as originating with bird breeders. Many Indian Ringnecks are caught using cage traps and relocated to the care of responsible bird keepers. To help prevent Indian Ringnecks from establishing in the wild and becoming pests in Australia it is essential that they are maintained in secure cages. Unwanted birds should be surrendered or released and any seen in the wild should be reported to the relevant government department/ Please report sightings of Indian Ringnecks in the wild - Freecall 1800 084 881. The Indian Ringneck is not native to Australia but it is widely kept here as a cage bird. It has significant potential to establish populations in Australia and become a pest. The Indian Ringneck is a longtailed, grass-green, red-beaked parrot, 37cm to 43cm in length. Male birds have a narrow black and pink collar which is absent from female and immature birds. Indian Ringnecks are very vocal with a variety of distinctive screeching calls. They can be identified by their typical shrill kee-ak call. Escaped Indian Ringnecks are often mistaken for native parrots. Indian Ringnecks occupy a range of habitats including semi-desert, open scrub, bushland, evergreen forest, light rainforest and agricultural land with scattered trees. They also inhabit gardens, orchards, towns, and cities. In Western Australia escaped Indian Ringnecks are often attracted to bird feeders containing seed or fruit put out for other species. Large numbers of ringnecks raid crops and grain storage facilities causing enormous agricultural losses. A variety of economically important crops are attacked including barley, sunflower, nuts and fruit such as mango, guava, fig, grape and peach. Introduced populations eat and destroy fruit as well as damage trees in orchards, vineyards, parks and gardens. They are thought to compete with native species for nest hollows, often occupying them before native birds begin to breed. Large numbers living in parks are a nuisance because of noise and damage to trees. The Indian Ringneck is rated as being highly likely to establish populations in Australia and become a pest of agriculture, the environment and public amenity. It is therefore important that birds found in the wild are removed quickly. Indian Ringnecks could threaten biodiversity if they become established in the wild. Native parrots such as rosellas and the endangered Swift Parrot may be at risk from competition for nest hollows. Agricultural crops such as sunflowers, other oilseeds, grapes and other fruit could be at risk. Large numbers of Indian Ringnecks are held in captivity in Australia but there are few requirements in place to ensure they remain secure in their cages. Between 2005 and late 2007 at least 25 Indian Ringnecks were removed from the wild in Western Australia. Some of these birds are thought to have survived in the wild for at

“When people not used to speaking out are heard by people not used to listening then real change can happen.” - John O’Brien. Why is it so hard to hear different opinions, criticisms and refusals? Why do we baulk at giving honest feedback or making requests? How can we respond helpfully when people are upset? How can we make difficult conversations work better for everyone? Facilitated by Chris Gillett (BSc Occupational Therapy), an Internationally Certified Trainer at the Centre for Nonviolent Communication, this workshop will use the tools of Nonviolent Communication to bring new choices and power to the way you think, speak and listen. Chris has been teaching NVC since 2005. “At work I love having such effective listening tools for empowering my clients and finding my way through conflict. And in all my relationships it’s just great to be able to more clearly say what I mean and hear what others mean...with compassion!” By participating in this workshop, you will understand what works and what doesn’t work in tricky conversations, learn to pause, settle and make clear choices before responding, develop skilled empathic listening, know how to speak honestly without “pressing buttons”, and foster cooperation without resorting to rewards or punishment. All in all, you will leave feeling hopeful and inspired, with renewed possibilities for all your relationships. The workshop is designed for everyone: parents, employers or employees, friends, and partners. Please note the date and times have now changed. The workshop will now be run over one day (instead of two) on the 15th March, from 9.30am to 4.00pm at the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre, 19 Wygonda Road, Roleystone. The cost varies from $100 to $250 according to what you can afford. Please bring something to share for a communal lunch. Morning tea and comprehensive notes will be provided. Please register with payment through www.trybooking.com?GTHO to secure your place. For inquiries, please email christinegillett@gmail.com or call 0428 758 544.

SUE SPRY - 20 Years of Community Service The 1st of February 2015 marked 20 years since Sue Spry took on a managerial role with the Roleystone Family Centre, which later became known as the Roleystone Family Neighbourhood Centre in 1999 after amalgamation. Sue grew up in the area and moved away after her marriage to Ian Butch, returning to live in Roleystone in 1986. In 1991, Sue enrolled in an evening pottery class, as she had previously been involved with this in Geraldton, where her first son had been born. After only being in the class one term, Sue was asked to take on the role of pottery tutor, which saw the night classes extend into daytime classes. Sue soon became involved as Treasurer of the Roleystone Neighbourhood House, and also a member of the Roleystone Family Centre, volunteering in the office to brush up her office skills. This led to Sue being offered the position of administrative officer in February 1995, and the role of co-ordinator later in July of that year. Over the years Sue was involved with Family Centre interests at a State level, serving on the Link West Committee for five years as their Treasurer and then Secretary. Sue has continued to maintain a very positive relationship not only with State Government officers, but with all the many stakeholders that link into the Family Centre. The Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre has been identified as one of the top two Centres in WA, an honour which without doubt we have Sue Spry to mainly thank for, due to her ongoing dedication and commitment to our Centre and community. The Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre Committee took Sue and Ian out for dinner to celebrate her twenty years of service, and on behalf of all who have been involved over the years with the Centre, thanked her for this outstanding achievement and commitment to our community. Pat Hart, Chairperson.

On the last day of the 2014 school year, principals at hundreds of WA public schools were told their 2015 budgets would be cut even more than they were anticipating. Education Minister Peter Collier has finally come clean on the total extent of the new 2015 cuts, which reveal 184 schools will be worse off than they were told last year. The worst hit school in Western Australia, Girrawheen Senior High School, will receive $6,124,000 in 2015 - $1,034,000 less than they were anticipating. Overall total of funding cuts to schools in Hasluck: $2,153,000 “Education across Hasluck will now be over $2 million worse off thanks to these reckless cuts by the Barnett Government. At a time when school budgets are already extremely tight and families are struggling with cost of living pressures with cuts from the Abbott Government such as the School Kids Bonus, how could Colin Barnett get it so wrong?” Duty Senator for Hasluck Glenn Sterle said. “We need to be investing in our schools, not ripping money out of them,” said Senator Sterle. “The future’s of the many students in Hasluck and across WA are being put at risk by the Barnett Government and it will be these students who will have to pay the price for Colin Barnett’s woeful financial mismanagement,” said Senator Sterle.

Roleystone resident Montanna Tickner is getting ready for a barnstorm of song and dance this March as the popular New Zealand comic strip Footrot Flats springs from page to stage. Presented by Laughing Horse Productions and Roleystone Theatre and based on Murray Ball’s cartoons, the characters come to life as Wal and his trusty border collie, Dog, deal with the daily struggles of farming life and the temptations of Cheeky Hobson. The story involves the claims of town versus country as Cheeky tries to lure Wal away from the farm and the very real possibility of the farm being sold. Other familiar characters from the comic strip that feature in the play include Horse, Cooch, Prince Charles, Dolores and Pongo. First staged in 1983, the musical plot and songs differ from the 1986 movie Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale. Tickner plays Jess, a border collie who is almost always on heat. “She has the attitude of ‘I can get any dog I want as a partner’ but she’s pretty set on the main character of Dog,” she said. “The biggest challenge I face is getting the confidence to sing on stage – I’ve sung with my friends and they’ve all given me positive feedback, which is always great – but the doubt is always there. “I’m hoping to look past that and put on a great performance for anyone who comes down to the theatre to watch.” First performing in Roleystone Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland in 2006, Tickner has spent the past few years at theatre working extensively behind the scenes doing lights, sound and backstage work. Also appearing in A House That Jack Built, she decided it was time she performed in a musical. “I’ve worked backstage on a musical so I thought I’d go way out of my comfort zone and audition to appear in Footrot Flats,” Tickner said. Director Kelly van Geest describes Footrot Flats as a family-friendly musical comedy where the animals talk and sing and tell the audience about their lives. “I was actually inspired by my fiancé to direct the show,” she said. “He mentioned there was a Footrot Flats musical and I thought ‘I’ve got to read this’. “Once I read it, I immediately thought ‘I’ve got to do this’ because the characters jumped off the page. “Footrot Flats is my first time directing a musical and fulllength production so figuring out how to make everything come together is a challenge.” Footrot Flats plays at 8pm March 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 18, 20 and 21 with a 2pm matinee March 8. Tickets are $25, $20 concession – book on 9397 5730 or at www.roleystonetheatre.com.au. Roleystone Theatre is located at 587 Brookton Highway, Roleystone, opposite the Croyden Road junction. Junk Collections begin The City of Armadale junk collections commenced on Monday 2 February 2015 and will run for 11 weeks. Residents are urged to follow directions noted in the junk collection flyer which will be delivered prior to the specified areas collection date. Residents are to only place junk on the verge in front of their property during the weekend immediately prior to their junk collection date. As always, litter infringements will be issued if junk is placed on the verge prior to the specified date, is placed in an area not allocated for junk collection, contains unacceptable items or is placed on another verge without permission of the owner. Televisions and computers may be disposed of for free at the Armadale Landfill Facility on Hopkinson Road in Hilbert. Fines will be issued if these items are left on the verge.

“I would remind residents that unsorted or unsuitable junk left on the verge will not be collected. There are many things we can collect, but some rubbish is just not suitable, so it is important that people follow the guidelines set out in the junk collection flyer,” said Mayor Zelones. “If the junk is properly sorted, the City is able to recycle about a third, which keeps collection costs down and reduces waste to landfill. “By working together, we can all help keep our City tidy during the verge collections we all find so useful,” said Mayor Zelones. Residents without a verge should contact Waste Services to register an alternative collection point. For further information call the City’s Waste Services team on 9399 0111.

Tribe Rainbow Yogis have joined up with The TARA Project for World Yoga Day! On Sunday 22 February 2015, yoga teachers and schools around the world will donate their time and space to a 2-hour yoga session devoted to human rights. The session will be held from 11am – 1pm local time in each time zone, resulting in a 24-hour yoga marathon around the world. Devoting our thoughts and energy globally to human rights issues will generate a powerful impact. Students attending the event can donate whatever tuition they can afford. Although not compulsory, contributions combined with spirit will help victims of human rights violation. We would love to see yogis from all styles participate in this wonderful event. Whether you are Iyengar,

Bikram, Anusara, Ashtanga, or Laughter Yoga, at the heart of any yoga style stands the union. Bringing yogis worldwide together for this important cause will create a wonderful, spirited celebration of yoga. It is our aim that as many nations as possible come together on this project, especially countries where human rights violation is a dominant issue. You can join the Rainbow Yogis Tribe at Roleystone Hall on Wygonda Road, Roleystone at 11:00am on Sunday 22 February. We will play, stretch, reflect, chill, and enjoy live local music by Elton Clay and SJ Earle with nibbles and chai. Please bring your friends, children, family, open hearts, smiles and plenty of laughter as we get our asana on for education!

Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 NEWS RELEASE

OP SCHOOL ZONE 2015 BACK TO SCHOOL

Police are urging motorists to slow down and be extra cautious in 40km/h school zones as children return to school. In 2014, a school zone in Meadow Springs topped the list of the most traffic infringements for the metropolitan area with 1494. This was followed by a Mandurah school zone, less than 2 two kilometres away, where 437 infringements were issued. This year police will aim to increase driver awareness in school zones, not just targeting speeding, but also mobile phone use and other distractions, seat belts and pedestrian related offences.

Assistant Commissioner Nick Anticich is urging motorists to be extra vigilant and to avoid distractions. “Our children are vulnerable members of our community, it is up to drivers to be extra vigilant in school zones. Children can’t judge the speed of vehicles, and they may not be aware of their surroundings.” “We will continue to target poor driving behaviour in school zones as we aim to protect our children”.
