YOUR Region. YOUR Magazine. YOUR Valley Reporter. Have you got your Girls on the Porch raffle tickets yet? If you would like to buy or sell some raffle tickets on behalf of GOTP, please go to page 7 for full contact details. Every dollar they raise helps the NBCF and their aim of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. We have a sister and brother who recently participated in a trip of a lifetime as they set sail for a week on the Leeuwin II sponsored by DFES. Read about the trials and tribulations as they embarked from Fremantle, with their first port of call a tour of the ship. Story on pages 14 and 15. Teaching kids to have compassion and empathy for their furry, feathered, and finned friends is vital for preventing cruelty to animals and raising them to respect and treat those who are different from them with kindness. So why not consider adopting a feline? Go to page 19 for the ‘Litter of the Month’ feature hosted

by the Armadale-Byford Veterinary Hospital. Our local Roleystone Sporting Club has selected a major charity. Show your support by buying a sausage sizzle located at the Roleystone Shopping Centre precinct on the 11th of July and 1st of August. All funds raised will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Western Australia (MNDAWA). Inside this issue you will find ways to entertain the whole family over the school holidays. There’s so much happening in Roleystone and its surrounding areas, including plenty of free and low cost kids’ activities. Please show your support by shopping smart and shopping local at Indge’s Pest Control, Champion Lake Vet Centre and Pickering Brook Primary School. Lastly, it is with great pleasure that I announce that the publication I have proudly reproduced over

the last 11 years, The Valley Reporter, is about to change hands to its new owner Doug Gilmour of Roleystone. I have liaised several times with Doug over the last 6 months and we have been able to establish a good business association. I find him to be very knowledgeable, confident and enthusiastic. With the strong foundations I have put in place with the month-to-month running of The Valley Reporter as a successful business, I have no doubt at all that Doug can take the publication on and even take it to the next level if he so wishes. If you need to contact Doug to discuss your advertising or editorial requirements, please call him on 0432 988 355. Show your support in welcoming Doug to The Valley Reporter and remember it’s Your Region, Your Magazine, Your Valley Reporter. Fiona Newland, Editor and Publisher.

The VALLEY Reporter considers its “Inbox Letters to the Editor” section to be a very important public forum. We make every effort to publish all letters, with those from persons in our readership area taking precedence. All letters to the editor must contain the writers full name, home address and daytime telephone number so the editor may contact the writer if there is a question or concern. For The VALLEY Reporter’s “Inbox Letters to the Editor” full list of guidelines go to; www.thevalleyreporter.com.au/letters.

Oh dear, oh dear, Roleystone just don’t sound the same. This is my eighth year in retreat from city life – fresh air, trees, and the sounds of kookaburras, crows and farmyard noises, like a cockerel crowing in the morning. Not any more! The cockerel, that is. It appears it was deemed a nuisance! Well, no it wasn’t, not to us locals. Its owner, prior to its acquisition, asked all the surrounding neighbours if they would mind them adding a cockerel to their hen-house collection, to which all gave the thumbs up (it adding to the rustic ambiance). I can only imagine some new resident complained to the authorities. Makes one wonder how long the Kookaburra has. P J Searle, Roleystone. REMINDER: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Valley Reporter considers its “Inbox Letters to the Editor” section to be a very important public forum. We make every effort to publish all letters, with those from persons in our readership area taking precedence. However, letters must conform to some guidelines. The Valley Reporter does not publish letters that

contain personal attacks or inappropriate, questionable language or content. We strongly encourage writers who do have a personal complaint about a business, individual or organisation to relay their concerns to the source instead of, or at least prior to, voicing them in a letter to the editor. In most cases, it is more appropriate to air those type of issues privately instead of publicly so that the subject may respond and the concerns may be addressed. We also, as a rule, do not publish unsigned letters. There is one exception: The writer must show an extremely compelling reason for needing to remain anonymous. The written request to have your “name withheld” must accompany the letter. All letters to the editor must contain the writers full name, home address and daytime telephone number so the editor may contact the writer if there is a question or concern. While we try to print as many letters to the editor as possible, writers must be aware that their publication is at the editor’s discretion. Timeliness, space constraints and the amount of letters submitted each month are three of the factors considered.

“Inbox Letters to the Editor” published in The Valley Reporter include contributions by persons independent of The Valley Reporter, and their opinions do not necessarily reflect those of The Valley Reporter. Please feel free to submit your letters highlighted as “Inbox Letters to the Editor” so we can include them in for the next monthly issue of “The Valley Reporter”. Email: thevalleyreporter@ iinet.net.au or www.thevalleyreporter.com.au/letters.

Take part in Australia’s largest annual survey of young people and have your voice heard. Mission Australia is thrilled to launch the Youth Survey 2015. We have been conducting the Youth Survey every year since 2002, allowing many thousands of young people to provide their perspective on the issues and experiences that concern them. Mission Australia CEO Catherine Yeomans said: “This year’s survey will include new focus questions around barriers to training, further education and employment as well as a focus on housing and community. “We know from previous surveys young people face some big challenges from youth unemployment, the rising cost of housing to concerns around alcohol, drugs and mental health.

“The survey will also take a closer look at young people’s participation in education, employment and community activities, their family and social support networks, and their values and concerns. “We want to see a fairer and brighter future for all of Australia’s young people and therefore we must involve them in that debate and listen to what they have to say.” Results assist with the development of programs and services that meet the needs of young people, are a key resource for policy makers, and are a valuable resource for young people, their families and those who support them, including schools and communities. The survey opened on Friday the 27th of March and closes on Friday the 31st of July. Ref: www.missionaustralia.com.au.

ARALUEN’S WEST AUSTRALIAN AVOCADO FESTIVAL Araluen Botanic Park Foundation invites you to participate in the inaugural Avocado Festival to be held in the beautiful surrounds of Araluen Botanic Park on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of November from 10.00am to 5.00pm. General Manager Grant Nixon said the festival is all about the good flavour and rich texture of the avocado. The fruit is prized for its high nutrient value, it’s loaded with hearthealthy monounsaturated fatty acids and is added to all sorts of dishes from cupcakes to guacamole because of its versatility and great taste. Visitors will be introduced to stallholders selling all things avocado ranging from beauty products, ciders, beer and cocktails as well as a great range of fresh delicious foods! Chefs will showcase the versatility of the avocado and there will

be avocado trees for sale. You will receive expert information and advice on planting, grafting and plant nutrition, and enjoy great entertainment and competitions. We see this festival becoming as successful as Araluen’s Fremantle Chilli Festival and welcome your interest. Of course, any time is a great time to visit Araluen Botanic Park. The park is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm every day with modest entry fees. From the spectacular running water all year round, beautifully scenic bush

walks, stunning gardens, heritage structures, the Chalet Healy Log Cabin Tearooms, and the BBQs and picnic areas, there is always plenty to do and see. Araluen Botanic Park is proudly supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. For further information about the Avocado Festival at Araluen Botanic Park, please contact Grant Nixon on 9496 1171 or email: ldunnaraluenbotanicpark. com.au.

Locals get involved in Purple Bra Day disco and everything in between.” The Konga Mega class took place on Tuesday June 16. Lots of willing locals participated in the night whilst wearing a purple bra to raise money for a worthy cause. The class was very memorable, featuring a range of dance styles from hip-hop to jazz, and, of course, disco lights. All money raised from tickets and other generous donations made on the night will go directly to Breast Cancer Care WA. If you would like to register yourself or your own event for Purple Bra Day, head to purplebraday.com.au to become an everyday hero. Purple Bra Day is officially Friday June 19, when everybody is encouraged to wear their purple bras with pride and collect donations for a worthwhile cause.

Every year Breast Cancer Care WA encourages people to come together as everyday heroes by hosting an event for Purple Bra Day. This year, it is to be held on Friday June 19. One in eight Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer, so it is no exaggeration that everybody knows somebody affected by the disease. In 2015, many Roleystone locals will be participating in Purple Bra Day to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer, including Clare Kenward and her Konga Mega class. Clare’s decision to get involved in Purple Bra Day stems from her work with Women’s Health & Wellbeing Services in Gosnells and her love of health and fitness. Clare says, “Apart from being a really fun way to get fit, Konga is a wild mash-up of boxing, cardio, pop, rock,

Good Shepherd Primary School Science: Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Our Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students have been exploring how things grow and change in our environment. In class, students have had the opportunity to plant sunflowers and then apply this knowledge in science by displaying what they had learnt using materials. Good Shepherd Cookbook Our beautiful Good Shepherd School Cookbooks are now available for purchase in the office. At just $35.00, this cookbook is a very special keepsake of our school that contains some delicious recipes from our students and their families. Perth Wildcat’s Visit As part of Hawaiian Group’s Community Program, children from Years 5 and 6 enjoyed a very different Thursday afternoon at a skills clinic with Perth Wildcats development players, Sunday Dech and Louis Timms. Both classes participated in a 30-minute skills based clinic, which included fun drills and focused on developing fast thinking, improved co-ordination and team building. After this special afternoon session, ending with some great advice and lots of encouragement from Sunday and Louis, students headed back to class exhausted, but full of smiles.

Real Estate Secrets Exposed

BUYERS TREND TO ‘UPSCALE’ THE FAMILY HOME

t o ta l

ro o f c a r e Howe WA Pty Ltd

We are seeing a pattern develop of buyers trading up from their existing residence, however interestingly they are choosing to retain their current property and directly financing the new purchase using current ‘cheap funds’. The importance of this……. if the vast majority of buyers choose not to sell their existing property and purchase another outright, it will invariably lead to a decline in the amount of listings available resulting in an increase in property prices – especially in the lower to mid range sectors where a significant amount of buyers are trading up from.

Disability Services Commission comes to Armadale The Disability Services Commission (DSC) Board has highlighted Armadale as one of the few local governments at the forefront of access and inclusion in Western Australia. The meeting was a chance for Armadale to present itself as an organisation on the front foot of access and inclusion. “It was fantastic to have the DSC Board visit Armadale on 5 June. We were able to highlight the grassroots work we are doing with access and inclusion to make this City a great place to live, work and visit for those with a disability,” said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP. “The Board were impressed with the steps the City is taking to continue to make our community

accessible. The Chairperson highlighted that Armadale was a place he felt welcomed and comfortable to visit as a father of a son with a disability, which is a fantastic compliment. “The City was one of the first local governments in Western Australia to lodge its Disability Services Plan (now known as the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan) with the Disability Services Commission. “We made a commitment to create an inclusive community a long time ago. We continue to work very hard to foster inclusion and make the City one which is accessible in all aspects,” he said.

At the same time that Shihan Tomiyama (Kofukan’s most Senior Instructor) visited our dojo earlier in May this year, two students within our Association attempted their next Dan (“black belt”) grading. If you are attempting to grade when Shihan is on his annual visit to Australia, you are required to train with him for the entire week and also have trained with him the year before. A 2nd Dan grading is a lot more intense than the 1st Dan, as students only get one attempt to demonstrate their katas. If there is just one hesitation you are asked to “sit down please” and try again next year. In addition to this, the grading was a closed grading, which meant parents, family and friends were not allowed to attend. Through their hard work and training, we would like to congratulate Elrina Hartman (Assistant Instructor - Roleystone Dojo) and Glen Baker (Senior Instructor - Mandurah Dojo) for passing their 2nd Dan grading on the 14th of May this year. Brooke Williams. As of semester two, our Health Promotion staff will be dedicating all their events and workshops to a different health topic per month. July’s topic is diabetes. One of the ways we can help to prevent diabetes or keep our general health in check is to enjoy a healthy diet and regular exercise. “Get on Track” with us for the whole of July and compete in our virtual race up the colourful coast from Cervantes to Exmouth. “Get on Track” is a free, online team-based challenge. It involves you and your team of up to four people (we have teams you can join if you are competing individually) racing other teams as you move along a virtual track by logging your daily fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity, such as walking, dancing and running - regardless of what fitness level you are. The more you do, the more you move along the course! If you have been waiting for a fun and motivating reason to get moving, here it is! Watch out for some prizes and surprises along the way. Our Challenge starts on Monday 6 July and runs for 4 weeks. If you’d like to take part, be sure to get your registration before Monday 6 July. Why I learned Veterinary Acupuncture

Pet Assist 332 Home Vet Services Compassionate convenient care of your pet at home

By Dr Judith Congrene BSc BVMS CVA

I had been a veterinarian for Dr Judith M Congrene BSc BVMS Veterinary Surgeon 25 years when I observed Dr Bruce Ferguson treat a drjcongrene@westnet.com.au very special mare of mine with acupuncture. I was so impressed by what I saw and Excellent service, reasonable prices vaccinations, microchipping, routine health checks, treatment knew I had to find out more of common problems including arthritis, allergies, abscesses, about this therapy and how compassionate euthanasia of pets at home much it could be applied to other conditions in animals. A very fascinating journey of discovery and evolving surprises unfolded as I began my studies in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). We have been so blessed to have Dr Bruce Ferguson based in Perth to provide this instruction in conjunction with the Chi Institute in Florida. The first experience of watching acupuncture performed on my horse was life changing. I have never seen anything so amazingly transforming as the pain which left my mare’s eyes within 3 minutes of one needle being placed. This almost instantaneous relief was profound and I was disbelieving that anything could be so 0421 567 423 effective in clearing the chronic pain for this special mare. 9397 6015 Although the Chinese have been using acupuncture for thousands of years, its EC9305 introduction to Western practice has been more recent for people and animals. Email: Not all treatments are so dramatic and the approach for each individual patient will glenweaver@aapt.net.au be individually tailored to their “Chinese pattern” on the basis of pulse and tongue “thank you for supporting your local electrician” characteristics, points of soreness detected during scanning of the meridians, and the history given by the owner of the presenting problem. Sometimes the treatment approach has to be more gradual – unfolding and treating “the layers of the onion” as they present. How much can be done in one session will also be determined by the age and body condition of the animal, whether they are already “deficient” or very weak in one system, or the other extreme, being “in excess”. Fremantle BID secures Winter Garden for port city

The not-for-profit Fremantle BID (Business Improvement District) organisation has scored a major win for local Fremantle businesses by securing the Winter Garden event for July. First held in 2012, it will see the return of a 20m x 30m ice rink on Fremantle Esplanade – one of the largest open-air rinks in the southern hemisphere – an alpine lodge bar, inflatable slides and many more attractions to transform the Esplanade into a winter wonderland. Fremantle BID has also negotiated opportunities for Fremantle businesses to get involved in the activities on the Esplanade and plans to have a Fremantle voucher book with offers from businesses redeemable with entry tickets. Fremantle BID Board Chairperson Danielle Cattalini said the event is expected to bring more than 100,000 visitors across a four-week period from July 1. “The 2012 experience of the ice rink on Fremantle Esplanade has been the most positively received event by local businesses in Fremantle CBD,” she said. “It attracted tens of thousands of visitors from all over the metropolitan area and

Perth Zoo will be the hottest place to visit these school holidays as the temperatures rise to keep the animals warm all year round. The warmest spot in the Zoo - for those brave enough to venture there - is the night-quarter of the prehistoric-looking Komodo Dragon, Raja. Raja basks under a bank of UV heat lamps pumping out a whopping 45°C. The energy produced from Perth Zoo’s solar panels will be put to good use this winter especially in the elephant barn with a mammoth bank of twelve heaters, keeping the elephants nice and cosy on a cold winter’s night. There are also dozens of individual little UV heat-lamps keeping lizards, snakes, monitors, turtles, meerkats and otters at the perfect temperature to ensure their comfort and health! There’s not a heat lamp big enough for Simmo the 500kg Estuarine Crocodile so he enjoys long, lazy soaks in his heated pool during winter instead. Some of humankind’s closest relatives the Sumatran Orang-utans have reverse-cycle night-heating, and species like the Galapagos Tortoise even have underfloor heating. Just rocks you say? On your next winter walk through the zoo, have a closer look at these ‘rocks’ and you may see a disguised heating pad in many of the exhibits. This is the case for the Reticulated Python. The enclosure for ‘Cuddles’ our Reticulated Python is kept at a toasty 30°C during the day, becoming one of the Zoo’s warmest places throughout winter! But not everything relies on electricity … Just before the cold harsh nights of winter kicked in, zookeepers were busy installing ‘winter beds’ across the zoo, treating the animals to extra cosy and deep bedding in their night quarters and many species have evolved do-it-yourself heating. For example, the Southern White Rhinoceros coat themselves in mud, which acts as a natural insulator and the adorable Pygmy Marmosets will happily pack into one nest box to share body heat. Keepers call this a “Pygmy Sandwich”! Ref: http://perthzoo.wa.gov.au. Published on 9 June 2015.

On the 16th of April this year, my sister and I were given the opportunity to board a trip of a lifetime, to set sail for a week on the Leeuwin II sponsored by DFES. Along with 48 other ‘Leeuwineers,’ we embarked in Fremantle and started our day with a tour of the ship, learning the safety procedures, and meeting our group mates. Leaving port on Thursday afternoon, we sailed through the night and woke up to the mouthwatering smell of bacon and eggs. For almost everyone on board, the breakfast sustained our stomachs for about an hour, until we hung our heads over the side and shared our leftovers with the crabs and other weird and wonderful creatures in the ocean. The rest of the week consisted of a timetable. There were watches in each group, and if sailing through the night, our shift would run for four hours. The 6-8 watch was called the ‘dog watch’, then came the regular duty watches of 8-12, 12-4 and 4-8. Every day was different as the wind changed direction quite regularly. It was up to the trainees (and the fantastic leaders) to set the sails and to keep the ship in a steady direction towards Monkey Mia. On Tuesday, it was entirely up to us to control the entire ship on our own, to get it from point A to point B. It was difficult to get the ship to actually move fast because there was hardly any wind. But, we managed and also got an enjoyable

view of some dolphins and sharks. On Wednesday night we anchored at Shark Bay, just off the coast of Monkey Mia. Most of us stayed awake all night because we wanted to get the most out of everything and enjoy the last few hours with the many friends each of us made. For those who did sleep, 4:30am was the time we had to be up and start to pack. Then, at 5:00am, a catamaran picked us up from the Leeuwin II, and we headed back to land. It was quite sad to leave the Leeuwin II because, even in the short period of time we were on, we had all become part of the ship. After spending half an hour on land, we were picked up by a bus and driven back to Fremantle. Thinking that we were going to sleep on the bus was a slight mistake. It was one of the bumpiest rides we have ever experienced in our life and won’t be forgotten. We arrived back in Fremantle at around 7:00pm on Thursday night. Saying our goodbyes, we left with a great attitude. We had done something that most people could only dream of doing. We had sailed the seas on board the Leeuwin II and experienced a lifechanging trip. This would not have happened without the DFES and the Roleystone fire station. Our greatest thanks and appreciation go to them and also for the existence of the Leeuwin II. Although it is true that ‘all good things come to an end’, our great memories of the trip and friends we have made will last forever. Tim and Sally Gunnink.

and Hal Hackady, Snoopy! The Musical was first performed in 1975 and is a sequel to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, the first stage production based on Peanuts. “Snoopy is a charismatic, confident and proud dog,” Gay said. “The challenge is creating a believable and relatable male character while still making Snoopy my own.” Involved in theatre since age eight, Stacey Gay first appeared in The Pied Piper and has since performed in numerous musicals and plays with Marloo Theatre and Roleystone Theatre including Annie (playing the title role) and, more recently, Sunset Boulevard and Hairspray at Limelight Theatre. She also teaches singing and runs a musical theatre class. “Snoopy! The Musical appealed because I love the music and the bright, fun energy the show brings alive,” Stacey said. Director Jen Edwards was inspired to direct the show after first being introduced to it while at university in London. “I wanted to produce a show at Limelight Theatre that would be suitable and appealing to children, predominantly because I have very young children of my own and love how music and dancing engages their minds,” Edwards said. “Another reason was a passion to bring more young people to the theatre – Snoopy! The Musical is a great introduction because it’s a quick-moving show with lots of short, colourful scenes. “With a shorter running time than most musicals our production has lots of appeal and will have a lot of exciting, kid-friendly extras going on, too.” Snoopy! The Musical plays at 7.30pm June 12, 19, 26 and 27, 3.00pm June 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28, and 11.00am June 20. GEORGIA McSWEENEY TAKES DRAG RACING TO THE NEXT LEVEL When local Roleystone resident Georgia McSweeney turned 18, she said goodbye to Junior Dragsters and hello to Senior Drag Racing. Involved in motor vehicle racing her entire life and junior drag racing since 2011, Georgia has made an impressive start to her senior drag racing career. In her first year of racing, Georgia received and accepted an offer to drive for Wayne Batson and also achieved 9th place in a major race where she competed against 43 other drivers. Georgia was ranked 3rd in the “Rookie Driver of the Year” and recently returned from an interstate trip to Willowbank Raceway in Brisbane where she was part of the crew for a top fuel dragster. Although Georgia has been unable to comment on her achievements due to her busy schedule, her father, John McSweeney, said he is very proud of his daughter’s smooth transition from junior drag racing to the senior level. “She’s gone from racing half tracks to full tracks in no time,” he said. “It was her goal to place in the top 10 and she has already achieved that goal.”

Like everyone else, Georgia can only do 110km/h on the road. However, she is legally allowed to do more than 200km/h on the racetrack. Finding sponsors is a major part of racing, and Georgia has taken it upon herself to contact local businesses and ask for sponsorship. She would like to thank her past and present sponsors, which include ACH, Roleystone Real Estate, Perth Hydraulics Centre, WJ & KS Automotives, Hansen Environmental, Engel, Hill’s Lifestyle Carpentry Services, Bensons Contracting, Automotive Paint, Tools & Equipment, Armadale Mower World, Fineline Signs, Pulse Energy, West Regent Pool Fencing, and Scope Irrigations. The Valley Reporter would like to congratulate Georgia on her senior drag racing achievements thus far and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Sky O’Brien.

Roleystone Senior Football Club would like to announce to all members our new fundraising effort to support the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Western Australia (MNDAWA). Motor Neurone Disease is a terminal degenerative neurological disease that robs a person of their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually breathe. There is no known cause and no cure for MND, with the average life expectancy after diagnosis being 27 months. Everyday, 2 Australians die from MND and 2 more people are diagnosed with MND. An estimated 140 people have MND in Western Australia. For every person diagnosed with MND it is estimated that a further 14 members of their family and friends will live with the effects of MND forever. The Roleystone Senior Football Club recently raised $480.50 from our first sausage sizzle for the MNDAWA. We will be back to do two more on the 11th of July and 1st of August and we’d love to see you there. The Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA supports people living with MND in Western Australia through care advisory service, information sessions and education programs, patient transport, respite, travel and internet

Strong Community Spirit Continues When I read various messages on a local Facebook page concerning rubbish along our roads, verges and bushland and saw it evolve into a ‘Keep Roleystone Beautiful Day’ led by a community person, Diane Clark, who decided to step up and organise the event with support from others, it made me feel very proud to live in Roleystone. This action made me reflect on what has happened in Roleystone over the years when someone sees a need and then acts with community support. In the early 1900’s, there were concerns about the quality of our roads. In particular, Croyden Road, used as the road through to Dale, was in a terrible state. Because the Roads Board advised they didn’t have sufficient funds to repair it, the locals agreed to do the labouring if the Roads Board supplied the materials. This type of community action also occurred on what is now called Brookton Highway, while our pioneers undertook many other community initiatives when the need was identified. Another community action occurred in the early 1950’s when Mr Cross donated land after the locals decided they needed an area to play cricket.

Community members raked the area and then various grasses were planted by locals and watered with canvas bags. The members then constructed a very basic bough shed structure from roughly hewn limbs and thatched with palm fronds. In 1991, local Roleystone resident Dr Ian Colquhoun, with his professional knowledge of dieback, observed numerous Jarrah tree deaths occurring in our reserves and decided to take action and set up the Roleystone Dieback Group (now Roleybushcare). Over the years, every Jarrah tree in our local reserves has been mapped and injected by this community group at least three times to stop them being infected with phytophthora cinnamon (dieback). The success of this community program has been outstanding. So many other examples of community-led initiatives in Roleystone and Karragullen have occurred since our community came into being back in the late 1800’s. May this strong commitment and sense of belonging in our community continue to thrive. Pat Hart.

Australia Day a Barrel of Laughs Award-winning director Jonathan Biggins is responsible for the latest theatrical shenanigans to take to the Kalamunda stage with the hilarious performance of his play “Australia Day” on Wednesday 29 July at 7:30pm. The country town of Coriole is getting ready for Australia Day – a time to crack open a frothy, stick a snag on the barbie and celebrate what it means to be a true blue Aussie. The Australia Day committee is gearing up to put on the town’s biggest party – but they have a few issues of their own to sort out first. With everyone from the Greens to the local mayor to the CWA wanting a piece of the party pie, it’s proving hard yakka to work out what an Aussie celebration should look like. Nothing is sacred as the national identity is put through the wringer in this thoroughly modern ripper of a comedy! Will the day be fair dinkum after all? Or are there too many roos loose in the community hall? CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “The Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre is delighted to showcase this wonderfully humourous and entertaining play written and directed by Jonathan Biggans, a Helpmann Award winning director, acclaimed playwright and Sydney Theatre Company satirist.” Australia Day returns in a brand new touring production for 2015

featuring a cast of well-known actors and comedians; Kenneth Moraleda (Water Rates, Wildside, White Colour Blue), Chris Betts (All Saints, The Day of the Roses) Geoff Kelso (The Gillies Report, The Mike Walsh Show), Robyn Arthur (The Secret Life of Us, Neighbours, Blue Heelers, Kath & Kim, The Librarians), Sharon Davis (Neighbours, Killing Time), and David James (All Saints, Howzat: Kerry Packer’s War, Any Questions for Ben). These talented actors all have vast theatre backgrounds and toured all over Australia. For a complete cast bio please contact KPAC on 9257 2558. The Australian critics have said, “There’s something to offend just about everyone in Jonathan Higgins’s deliciously light and perfectly-pitched joke fest. Biggins knows his audience well and sets about ribbing all of them. He has a fine sense of the incongruous and a rarely erring intuition when it comes to highlighting everyday foibles and human vulnerabilities. It’s just too funny.” Tickets are $40.00 or $35.00 concession and can be purchased from the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre on 9257 2558 or online. The Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre is located at 48 Canning Road. Ref: www.kalamunda.wa.gov. au. Published on 28 May 2015.

Roleystone Community Chemist Health Advice Corner – COLDS AND FLU With winter now upon us the common cold seems to spread throughout the community like wild fire. The common cold is a viral upper respiratory tract infection caused by one of the many hundreds of virus’ people carry and share through coughing and sneezing. There is a misconception that the ‘flu needle’ will protect you from the common cold, however the influenza vaccine only protects you from three of the most virulent strains of influenza virus, which can be dangerous for the elderly. Common colds are self-limiting infections, which means you will get better regardless of what you do or take. Here are some suggestions to help you. Firstly, drink plenty of water. Honey and lemon drinks can help with a sore throat (Pharyngitis), a common symptom of the common cold. The honey is very soothing and the lemon contains vitamin C. Secondly, use paracetamol (Panamax/ Panadol) to reduce associated mild fevers, body aches and pain and general malaise. Get plenty of rest and use steam inhalations (menthol/ pine, menthol/eucalyptus) or nasal sprays to reduce the runny nose (rhinitis). Finally, although cold and flu tablets and capsules certainly reduce symptoms, care must be taken

when using these preparations as many contain pseudoephedrine. This medicine is very useful for unblocking a stuffy nose and stopping a runny nose, however it can have adverse effects on the heart and can interact with many medications (including heart and blood pressure medications). It is always best to consult your pharmacist. Sore throats are a frequent complication of the common cold. Use of aspirin gargles, anti-inflammatory lozenges and iodine gargles can relieve symptoms rapidly. Again, check with your pharmacist if such medications are appropriate for you. Prevention is always better than a cure. Resting and avoiding close contact with others as well as covering mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing reduces the spread of infection through the community. There are many natural remedies available, such as the herbs echinacea, angiographis, garlic, vitamin C, and zinc, which help boost our immune system so that we are less likely to succumb to cold symptoms. If you catch a cold, always check with your pharmacist and tell them what medications you are taking.

ROCKIN’ SHOCKIN’ MUSICAL SPOOF A MONSTER HIT A musical spoof of popular horror shows is set to cast a spell with its allsinging, all-dancing mix of bizarre comedy this June. Presented by Pristine Entertainment at the Carine Senior High School Performing Arts Centre, The Rocky Monster Show is a witch’s brew of Young Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera, Rebecca, The Addams Family, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors. The in-bred villagers of Arkham are not happy with goings-on at a nearby creepy castle where Dr Frankenstein’s descendant Professor Fenton is creating DNA moulds of people in his computer. “He was a rock star badly injured in a tour bus crash and wears a mask like the Phantom,” director Alida Chaney said. “His DNA moulds come to life as the ultimate rock group, headed by a clone of Elvis Presley. “The Rocky Monster Show has a huge cast with the majority of them children so it’s all a question of trying to stage all the acting parts, oversee the dancing and singing and then bring it all together to make an entertaining show.” First stepping on the stage in the UK as an 11-year-old in Oliver, Chaney has a wealth of stage credits to her name and has performed with a variety of theatres including Limelight, Playlovers, Garrick and Stirling Theatres since arriving in Perth 17 years ago. Her productions of Blood Bothers, Lost in Yonkers and The Rink have received a variety of awards and nominations while she was also named best female supporting actor for her role in Sordid Lives at the annual Plover Awards. Last year, Chaney scored six awards for The Broken Slipper at Dramafest, the annual state drama festival, including best director and best production and later staged it as a successful double-

bill with A Piece of Cake at Fringe World. “I’ve been involved with The Rocky Monster Show before with Perth Youth Theatre and I remembered it being lots of fun,” she said. “When Pristine Entertainment principal Chris Fillis asked if I would consider directing her next production, I thought it would be a good suggestion.” The Rocky Monster Show plays at 7.30pm June 19 and 20 and 2.00pm June 20 and 21. Tickets are $25.00, $20.00 concession – book on 0419 246 122. The Carine Senior High School Performing Arts Centre is on Osmaston Road, Carine. There has been ongoing community interest in the development of seniors housing at the old Primary School site in Roleystone. As you would be aware, in late April the ownership of the old Roleystone Primary School site changed hands to Abbie Holdings Pty Ltd. The City of Armadale has designated the site to be developed for ‘aged and/or dependent persons’, which is generally considered for people over the age of 55 years. The State Government has approved the property as suitable for 44 residential units. Before any plans can be prepared and made available for Council and local discussion, the owner must engage suitably experienced and qualified consultants to investigate and report on a number of issues. The owner is currently in discussions with a variety of consultants with the intent of appointing them to produce reports on a range of issues including site feature survey, demolition of selected existing structures, geotechnical report for soil analysis which is required for drainage and foundation requirements, waste water management proposals, effluent disposal options, existing environmental issues concerning preservation of suitable vegetation, bushfire management, and availability of adequate services such as water and power. Other matters include streetscape and building type, while strata title management choices need consideration. Once the site is fully investigated and all relevant features, constraints and potentials are understood, the site planning and type of housing developments can be put to paper for discussion. There is currently no calculated timeline for all these matters to be resolved. It is hoped, however, that by spring of this year there will be enough base data to at least begin draft structure plans. If anyone sees excavating machines on site shortly, they will be digging a number of test holes over the site in order to commence investigations regarding soil analysis to be used in the waste water management studies. The owner plans to keep the community fully informed of the project’s progress and once he has confidence in the viability and development integrity of the concept then community consultation will be implemented. Pat Hart (email: pathart1@bigpond.com), Convenor Roleystone Seniors Housing Committee.

ACADEMY OF DIGITAL MEDIA A hearty congratulations and best of luck is extended to Ciera Bayley, 2013 Roleystone Academy of Digital Media (RADM) alumni and current Advanced Diploma student at Central Institute of Technology, for her upcoming funded film project. Ciera was awarded a $5000.00 budget to produce her script that was chosen from a variety of other student-written works. We wish her all the best with her film and remaining studies for the year. This is another great example of what can be achieved through hard work and having the skills accrued through the RADM. We would also like to acknowledge the work achieved so far by Tobiyaez Haynes, 2014 RADM alumni. He is currently studying to achieve a Diploma level certification at Central Institute of Technology, while also managing the RADM media store room and dealing with the data management needs of the specialist program. The RADM team, along with all the Executive and staff at RCC, love hearing and witnessing success stories beyond formal studies at Roleystone Community College, with many more examples of ‘real world’ accomplishments being brought to the College’s attention weekly. Congratulations from the RADM Team. Mr Holliday, Dean Academy of Digital Media.
