YOUR Region. YOUR Magazine. YOUR Valley Reporter. There is bound to be something for everyone within this month’s Valley Reporter. The ongoing submissions by all of our community have been overwhelming, so enjoy the read. It’s Girl Guide Biscuit time! If you would like to purchase Guide biscuits from our very own Roleystone Girl Guides, they are only $3.00 a box. Go to page 3 to find out where you can order yours. Have you got a flair for cooking multicultural food? Well the City of Gosnells is looking for stallholders for their annual Food Fair Day. Turn to page 8 for registration details. Take part in the country’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. National Tree Day Sunday 27 July and Schools Tree Day Friday 25 July. Page 15 has a

very interesting article worth reading on “Nature a valuable investment for homeowners and businesses”. A new survey completed by Planet Ark shows investing in greenery leads to significant payoffs. The report explores the social and financial, health and wellbeing, and ecological benefits of having trees, plants and other natural elements at home, in the workplace and at school. The Roleystone Women’s Hockey Club is hosting a Quiz Night on Friday 8th of August. Come along for a fun night and support your local hockey club. Full details on their advertisement on page 21. Our very own Stephanie Boyle from Roleystone has been selected as the ‘Artist in Residence’ at the 40th Anniversary Army Art Exhibition to be held at Leeuwin Barracks. Come along and admire

the diverse range of artwork, sculptures and so much more on display. A big-hearted musical comedy comes to life at Roleystone Theatre this July. “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” treads the fine line between conviction and melodrama. There will always be a temptation to verge into slapstick and just play for laughs, but the true beauty of the show is the relationships between the characters and the moments of truth. Go to page 24 for session times, with a 2:00pm matinee scheduled for July 26th. Please show your support by shopping smart and shopping local at Curves Armadale, Healy Property Maintenance, Redgum Carpentry, Michelle Ellen (Aromatherapy Massage), Hillside Tree Works, and Prefurred Pet Care. On Monday the 9th of June, the Roleystone Girl Guides held a Promise Night. Traditionally, it is a wonderful evening where the new girls get to invite friends and loved ones to share in their recitation of their Guide Promise: “I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve my community and Australia and live by the Guide Law. Respect myself and others. Be considerate, honest and trustworthy. Be friendly to others. Make choices for a better world. Use my time and abilities wisely. Be thoughtful and optimistic. Live with courage and strength.” Leading up to this evening, the girls did activities to further their understanding of their promise and the Guide Law. Janice Mclean, Guide name Kookaburra, has also joined the unit as a Girl Guide leader to help assist the amazing long-time leader Roxanne Davin, Guide name Ladybird. It is also Girl Guide Biscuit time! If you would like to purchase Guide biscuits, they are $3.00 a box, and are available now. Please contact Janice, at roleystone.girl.guides@ gmail.com if you would like to help our Roleystone Girl Guides by purchasing a few boxes. If we run out, we can get more! Monies raised goes towards the everyday costs of running our unit.

ROLEYSTONE COLLEGE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES TO GROW Mr Thatcher had the pleasure of presenting the College’s P&C President Mrs Tammy Riley and Council Chairperson Mr Ken Walker with two new laptops for use respectively by our wonderful Uniform Shop committee and the P&C Executive to assist in their organisation and planning. In many ways it was an opportunity for staff and students to reciprocate and acknowledge the sustained support of these much-valued community representatives. Examples of their valuing adding to College programs is evident through the recent purchases seen in our Film and Television Program ($4,500), choir shirts, recreational equipment such as outdoor chess and games, and honour boards. In closing, a huge thank you to Ibu Brophy, the College’s ICT Coordinator for making this all happen.

Sands WA is happy to announce that they have become re-incorporated, and are once again operational in Western Australia. Sands (Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Support), began in 1979 in Perth, created from the longing of men and women to link with other parents had also experienced the loss of a baby. Sands continued to offer support through phone and face-to-face contact, including support groups, for over 30 years in Perth. However, around 2001, funding started to run out and Sands amalgamated with Sids & Kids. Despite this, Sands Australia has continued to grow and offer support in all states, and is now back to continue their good work in WA. Sands offers support to parents and their families when they experience the loss of a baby, from any point in between conception through to newborn death. We offer parent support through a 24 hour support line on 1300 072 637 (13000SANDS), and will soon be holding monthly support group meetings. You can find Sands WA on Facebook as well, if you would like to learn more. Suzanne Mackenzie, Secretary, Sands WA. Some of our new patients, a quenda with her 3 babies! VETERAN’S COMMUNITY INFORMATION EVENING The Shire of Kalamunda is proud to support a free Community Information Evening for veterans and their families on Wednesday 23 July 2014 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. The free event is an initiative of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and seeks to provide veterans, ex-serving and serving members of the Air Force, Army and Navy and their families, partners or carers with information and advice on services and activities available in the community. The evening will include guest speakers from Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Shire of Kalamunda, Kalamunda RSL, Bush Fire Brigade and SES, Perth Central and East Metro Medicare Local and local Mens Sheds. CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “Many veterans are not always aware of the range of services available from their local council or community and the information evening aims to provide a range of information that may be of interest or relevance to them.” “This may include finding out about special interest or social inclusion groups and could lead to something as simple as joining a local Men’s Shed to share in the camaraderie and mateship they may have once experienced in the army or navy.” “There are a wide range of services available to support veterans and their families and we hope interested community members will make the most of this valuable opportunity.” The Community Information Evening will be held at the Agricultural Hall, 48 Canning Road, Kalamunda. Hot drinks and light refreshments will be available throughout the night. For more information or to RSVP by Tuesday 22 July phone the Department of Veterans’ Affairs on 133 254. HOW WILL THE FEDERAL BUDGET IMPACT ON THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY?

What could have been…. - With the magnitude of Joe Hockey’s budget the real estate sector looked like an obvious target. - Tough reforms on Negative Gearing plus the potential for owner occupied homes to be capital gains taxed and pension means tested was also touted!!! What actually happened… - The real estate industry came through relatively unscathed. - The First Home Savers Account (FHSA) was scrapped. - Joe Hockey indicated that he expects interest rates to remain low in the medium term creating less need for intervention to boost housing activity.

The Valley Reporter would like to congratulate Ebonie Ancliffe on being selected to the Australian International Men’s & Mixed Netball Association (AIMMNA) Touring Squad, who will represent their country at the highest level of the sport later this year. Ebonie’s promising netball career began many years ago in the Roleystone Netball Club, before she progressed through Association, Regionals, State League, and Super League games. Last year, Ebonie represented the State in the Indoor and Outdoor State Champions for Under 21’s, and as a result, was chosen to represent the entirety of Australia in the Fiji Championships. Earlier this year, she represented WA in the Championships again, this time in the open division, and helped win the Nation Championship cup. Consequently, she was one of six girls chosen (and the only WA representative) to represent Australia in the International Championship, which will be held in America this October. The squad will leave Australia on the 3rd of October, and return on the 16th, after touring Coral Springs, Florida, in the United States. They will be representing AIMMNA at a number of different functions, teaching clinics and netball development programs, as well as a 5 Nations Tournament, held in Coral Springs over a period of four days. Another aspect of the tour will be a sports program on netball in the local schools, at both primary and secondary level. The squad will be visiting and helping to develop the skills of the local boys and girls in the game of netball. This program will be over three school days. This program is an important part of representing Australia, and helping the development of Men’s & Mixed Netball within the International arena. The players themselves have to fund their own way to represent their country at this level. Each player is paying $4800 in total, which covers airfare, accommodation, transport,

Assisting Pets: kennel cough in dogs

Healthy Homes

by Dr Judith Congrene BSc BVMS CVA

It is worth a consultation to examine a dog when they are suffering from kennel cough because acupuncture, Chinese herbs and other symptomatic relief can be prescribed. In many cases, giving your dog honey several times a day is a simple yet effective home remedy. Wonderfully, this can be adequate treatment to assist the dog through the course of the symptoms, and I have heard happy feedback from clients who were surprised and relieved that this simple remedy worked. At other times, I consider that antibiotics are highly advisable to minimise the serious consequences of this highly contagious disease. Please contact Dr Judith Congrene on 0433 2137 28 if you wish to book a home visit. Photograph courtesy of JG Photographics.

The kennel cough conversation usually begins when a concerned owner requests a home visit after hearing a terrible hacking cough from their dog. Typically, there is phlegm being coughed up and the dog sounds like it is choking and gagging all at once. As I question the owner about symptoms and history, it comes to light that the dog has just come back from a stay in kennels. That little snippet of information casually added to the conversation gets the diagnostic alarm bells ringing: kennel cough. Kennel cough is generally not the serious and life threatening disease that parvovirus infection is in dogs. However, if it is not treated competently and adequately, the patient’s condition can deteriorate with the development of pneumonia. The hacking cough can be very debilitating to the dog and very frustrating to the owners.

Do you have any pesky silver coins lying around the house? Well, I have an answer for you! Our family are collecting them for Telethon. Our daughter Mikayla (8) has Rett Syndrome, and last year we had our van upgraded with a wheelchair lift, thanks to the funding provided by Telethon. As a result, we were inspired to give back by collecting silver coins in buckets, which Mikayla and her brothers are going to deliver on the Telethon weekend in October this year. I would like my boys Connor (11) and Lachlan (10) to feel the weight of the coins, and get an understanding of how one small coin combined with many others can make a huge difference to another child’s life. If you would like to help us, you will find a Telethon collection bucket in our local Roleystone Bendigo Bank, or on the counter at Roleystone Supa IGA. Please call in and help us fill them up. Melanie Kennelly.

Roleystone Community Chemist Fish Oil, Heart Disease and Arthritis Fish oils - are they a miracle cure, or is it just another fishy tale? Cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and some varieties of tuna and krill contain the essential nutrients called polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUVAs), specifically docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), also known as omega 3 fatty acids. Plant sources of omega 3 fatty acids include flaxseed oil, walnuts, canola and soybean oil. Studies from many years ago revealed that as a race of people, Japanese and Eskimos had a very low incidence of high cholesterol, heart disease and arthritis. The distinguishing difference was the fact their diet was very rich in cold water fish. The WHO recommends one to two serves of fish weekly, to protect against heart disease and stroke, whereas the Australian Heart Foundation recommends a combination of fish, fish oils and PUVAs at least once a week to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. The problem is that in Australia, we probably only consume about 150mg of omega 3 fatty acids daily (the equivalent of 1 fish meal every 10 days), when we need at least three times that amount. Fish oils may be a natural way of preventing cardiovascular disease as well! Fish oils have also been shown to markedly reduce triglyceride levels, by decreasing the production of very low density lipo-protein cholesterol. This in turn lowers LDL and slightly raises HDL (“good cholesterol”). There is also evidence to suggest that fish oil intake can lead to a reduction in heart rate, a slight reduction in blood pressure, and a reduction in the inflammatory responses in blood vessels. It is important to note that whilst all these benefits have been demonstrated, fish oils are not a recommended replacement for heart, blood pressure, or cholesterol lowering medicines. Arthritis and Crohn’s disease (an

inflammatory disease of the bowel) might also be prevented or lessened through the use of fish oils on a regular basis, which has resulted in a reduction in joint pain and stiffness, as well as less of a need to use typical arthritic medicines. Other possible benefits of taking fish oil regularly include: • Slowing the cognitive decline towards Alzheimer’s Disease; • Reducing the risk of developing cataracts; • Slowing the process of developing Type 2 Diabetes, or assisting in impaired glucose tolerance. Most fish oil products on the market contain between 30-50% of DHA and EPA. For example, a 1000mg capsule typically contains 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA (300mg combined). When determining how many to take, it is necessary to check the strength of these omega 3 fatty acids. • To prevent heart disease, 500mg (2 capsules daily); • To treat heart disease, 1000mg (3-4 capsules daily); • To deal with arthritic conditions, 2700mg (9 capsules daily); • To lower triglycerides, 1200mg4000mg (4-14 capsules daily). Side effects of fish oils are relatively few. Sometimes you might experience nausea, stomach upset, and mild reflux with a fishy after taste. These side effects can be minimised, however, by refrigerating the capsules and taking them with food. Care must be taken when mixing fish oil with aspirin, or blood thinners, due to increased risk of bleeding. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist. For further information, visit www.heartfoundation.org.au.

100 YEARS OF RED CROSS – A BITTERSWEET CELEBRATION The Senator for Hasluck, Glenn Sterle today congratulated the Red Cross members and volunteers of Western Australia whose everyday work makes such a positive, lasting difference to the lives of vulnerable people. “100 years of Australian Red Cross is worth celebrating”, Senator Sterle said. “Over the past century, especially during times of war and disaster or through the blood service, the lives of most Australians have been touched by Red Cross. “What is upsetting during these Centenary celebrations however is that the Red Cross now has to deal with the announcement from the Abbott Coalition Government that in their recent Budget, the $5million annual grant to the Red Cross has been cut,” said Senator Sterle. This cut would be unwarranted at any time but is extremely disappointing in the year that we celebrate the centenary of the Australian Red Cross. The Red Cross supports some of the most vulnerable Australians when they

are most in need and it deserves the Government’s support. The $5 million grant has been in place since 2006 and always enjoyed the support of Labor when in government. The grant assisted with the Red Cross’ work in communities across Australia, delivering relief and community services to many at risk families and individuals. It also supported the dedicated volunteers and staff who work tirelessly to lift individuals and families that experience disadvantage out of poverty and hardship. “I am deeply concerned about what impact this cut will have on the Red Cross’ ability to deliver these important services. In a year where the Red Cross is celebrating such a milestone, the Government should be strengthening this organisation for its future, not putting it at a disadvantage,” said Senator Sterle. Labor will continue to stand up for the health of Australians and important organisations whose support we rely on like the Red Cross.

Wellness seminar – moving into residential aged care The City of Gosnells, in conjunction with Juniper, is hosting a wellness seminar to outline the process involved in moving into a residential aged care facility. The seminar will cover the five steps into residential aged care and will give people the chance to chat with health professionals about any concerns at a morning tea provided afterwards. City of Gosnells Mayor Dave Griffiths said the seminar would be a great opportunity for seniors, carers and family members to access information and make informed decisions about residential aged care. “The seminar will cover assessing eligibility, finding a home, working out the cost, applying for care and the moving and settling in process,” said the Mayor. “As well as outlining the five step process, the seminar will also cover the

grief and loss associated with the period of transition into an aged care facility,” said the Mayor. This free seminar will take place from 9am – 11am on Tuesday 29 July 2014 at Lyal Richardson Hall, 2232 Albany Highway, Gosnells. Nature a valuable investment for homeowners and businesses New survey shows investing in greenery leads to significant payoffs An independent survey commissioned by Planet Ark has found that many Australians clearly value the health and wellbeing benefits of living in a home and neighbourhood with lots of nature. The survey showed that Australians would be willing to pay an average of $35,000* more for a home in a nature-filled neighbourhood than for an identical house with little surrounding nature. Released in the lead up to National Tree Day on Sunday 27th July, the survey results are being published in Planet Ark’s Valuing Trees - What is Nature Worth? report, sponsored by Toyota. The report explores the social and financial, health and wellbeing, and ecological benefits of having trees, plants and other natural elements at home, in the workplace and at school. Zumba & Zouk Four out of five Australians (78%) said they would prefer to live in a home with many natural elements, such as trees, plants and a garden, over one that does not have these features. When asked to consider their ideal home and © Planet Ark 2014 its features, Australians rated having a home with a backyard and living in a “green” neighbourhood with trees, parks and gardens even higher than being close to work, having easy access to public transport, and having good shops or a shopping centre nearby. In recent years, several studies have been done to place a value on trees in a number of Australian cities. Each shade tree over a house has been estimated to save ~30 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year in air conditioning costs’. Based on this figure, 100,000 mature shade trees in an Australian city could save approximately half a million Australian dollars in energy costs”. Urban vegetation also helps lower the risk of death and illness from heatwaves, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions, air pollution, demand for water and anti-social behaviour. 3 repairs to submersible & Having easy access to nature and natural surroundings provides significant health benefits, centrifugal bores which are becoming increasingly important as our society spends more time inside. Research commissioned by Planet Ark in 2013 found that, on average, Australians spend 3 installation of new bores and wells just 4.7 hours per week doing outdoor recreational activity. Yet a vast number of studies have 3 reticulation installation & repairs confirmed that having contact with nature and access to green space can positively impact Call now for people’s health in a number of ways - by improving indoor air quality and associated health issues, lowering stress and boosting wellbeing, improving mental health, encouraging a free quote people to do more physical activity, lowering obesity and accelerating healing after surgery. The survey showed access to natural settings and outdoor breaks are also important at work. Australian employees are willing to sacrifice an average of $3,674 in pay to have greener and more natural workplaces. Work-related stress is a serious and costly problem in Australian workplaces, exacerbated by our time-poor lifestyles. Amongst the nation’s indoor workers, 1 in 4 people don’t take breaks outside at all, yet 69% of people want to spend more time outdoors. Two in five respondents said they were too busy to take breaks, despite the fact that getting outside into nature has been shown to help people recover from mental fatigue and stress and restore attention. In light of these research findings and the many clear benefits associated with contact with nature, Planet Ark is encouraging everyone to incorporate more green into their homes, offices and schools, and participate in a National Tree Day activity in their community, workplace, school or in their own backyard. New website to link veterans to support Canning MHR Don Randall has welcomed the launch of a new website for the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service (VVCS). The dedicated website was recently announced by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson. Mr Randall said the VVCS is a free and confidential service that offers eligible veterans counselling, group programs, and after-hours crisis support 24 hours a day. “This is the latest positive move to support veterans by the Coalition Government, following our introduction of the fair indexation for Defence Forces Retirements Benefits (DFRB) and Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Pensions (DFRDB),” he said. Mr Randall said approximately 57,000 military superannuants and their families across Australia would be better off as a result of the Coalition’s new indexation legislation, with changes taking effect from 1 July 2014. The Students Advising Youth (SAY) project is an innovative competition that uses digital and social media to communicate crime prevention messages to the community. Canning MHR Don Randall yesterday praised the program in a speech to Parliament. Mr Randall commended the vision of the Peel District Police in creating the SAY competition and said Sergeant Tam McKeown had done an outstanding job of thinking outside the box to connect with young people. Participants aged 12 to 18 are required to make a 90-105 second short film and to encourage their school or youth group to upload the video to its YouTube account. The videos must have an anti-drugs crime prevention message with this year’s topic being ‘Making Your Community Drug Free and Drug Aware’. First prize is $1,000 cash and an allexpenses paid trip for the filmmaker and a guardian to visit Canberra and attend Parliament House where they will present

their film to the Federal Government. Second, third and fourth places will also win $1,000. “With the help of podcasts created by Murdoch University media students, the films are then digitally marketed online and on social media,” Mr Randall said. “The most often viewed and most popular video will be entered into the state finals.” He said the competition aimed to engage young people through using digital media they are familiar with and said tackling the challenge of illicit drug use was something that required adequate intervention. “By young people putting these videos together to distribute among their peers, it is hoped drug use will be increasingly seen as unacceptable and substance abuse will be discouraged,” he said. Registration for the program closes on July 24, 2014. For more information visit http://www.police.wa.gov.au/ Aboutus/News/StudentsAdvisingYouth/ tabid/2030/Default.aspx.

Forget working out two hours a day. Just 30 minutes, three times a week, is all that is needed for women to become fit and strong. A scientifically proven 30 minute workout is one of the key ingredients behind the global success of the Curves women’s fitness and weight loss clubs. According to Curves Director of Exercise and Research, Katie Mitchell, the use of hydraulic resistance exercise equipment is integral to the Curves 30 minute workout. “Most women only have a small amount of time to fit exercise into

their schedule so every minute counts. “That’s why the Curves Circuit includes hydraulic resistance exercise equipment. This type of equipment gives women the ability to strength train opposing muscle groups at the same time. Doing two exercises on the one machine simultaneously cuts down workout time. “Hydraulic resistance equipment is also generally safer than free weights because women are not required

to pick up and put down heavy weights. The faster a member moves through our machines, the more resistance she will feel. This makes hydraulic resistance safe and effective for all fitness levels.” According to Katie, women work out in 30 second intervals in the Curves circuit. “Thirty seconds is the optimal time to allow muscles to work at maximum capacity before fatigue sets in. This means members can recover more effectively between strength machines and sustain heart rate within their target heart rate training zone.”

Aboriginal Business Directory WA launches Facebook page The Aboriginal Business Directory WA (ABDWA) now has its own Facebook page, providing a great way for the community to keep updated on news and events relating to Aboriginal small business in Western Australia. Small Business Established in 2012, the Directory promotes products and services Development Corporation from Aboriginal businesses in WA to potential buyers in government, private and not-for-profit sectors. Featuring more than 200 businesses from across the State, it is the most comprehensive list of its kind in Western Australia. The new Facebook page at www.facebook.com/aboriginaldirectorywa further enhances the directory as a valuable cross-cultural business resource. Small Business Commissioner David Eaton said the Facebook page was a tool that would help to further build the Aboriginal business community through the sharing of news and links to useful, relevant and interesting information. “The ABDWA has been well-received, exceeding expectations, and the Facebook page will enable us to build on this success,” he said. “The Facebook page provides a great way for the Aboriginal business community – along with those seeking to use businesses listed on the Directory – to receive updates on the ABDWA, small business sector news, services, workshops and business opportunities. “It also highlights how the Directory is having a positive impact on Aboriginal communities and individuals through employment and developing businesses.” The Directory itself is the result of a partnership between Government and private enterprise and addresses one of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG)’s seven action areas to overcome Indigenous disadvantage in economic participation. “The ADBWA provides a great opportunity for WA’s Aboriginal businesses to showcase their products and services to wider audience,” Mr Eaton said. “It provides an avenue for Aboriginal businesses to promote their capabilities to prospective clients nationally and internationally and the launch of the associated Facebook page will further assist this.”

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has announced it will open a new state-of-the-art facility, which will cost $4 million to complete, in early 2015. The Perth Blood Donor Centre, currently located at 290 Wellington St Perth with the Blood Service’s blood processing facility, will move 700m away to a more spacious and modern facility in the Murray St Mall in the Perth CBD. WA Blood Service Manager Craig Rutherford said the new Perth Blood Donor Centre, located at Level 1, 140 William St, Perth, would be the biggest in Australia. “The Blood Service’s 55-yearold Wellington St building is itself undergoing a major upgrade, which has presented us with a wonderful opportunity to relocate our Perth Blood Donor Centre to a more convenient and accessible location in Perth,” Mr Rutherford said. “Located in the heart of the Perth CBD in the Murray St Mall, donors will be able to walk off the train and into our donor centre, and then enjoy a bit of shopping or a bite to eat straight after their donation.

“Our new facility will boast a larger donation area, and a refreshment lounge with a view of the Murray St Mall, making our donors’ blood donation experience much more enjoyable. “We are hoping our new, highlyvisible location will increase blood donation awareness and lead to an increase in the number of Perth blood donors. “With the capacity to expand, the centre will be able to cater for any future growth in demand for blood and blood products.” The Blood Service is funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments via the National Blood Authority. It collects 27,000 donations a week across Australia and is pivotal to the health and wellbeing of thousands of Australians.

Woody Humes receives NAIDOC Outstanding Achievement Award A Champion Centre mentor has received a prestigious 2014 NAIDOC Award, sponsored by BHP Billiton. Harold “Woody” Humes a Senior Aboriginal Police Liaison Officer, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award, at the recent 2014 NAIDOC Perth Awards held at the iconic Heath Ledge Theatre in Perth. The NAIDOC Perth Awards honour the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and businesses in Perth. Woody has worked for the WA Police Force for 21 years and has also served in the Australian Defence Services. Mayor Henry Zelones said Woody has been the driving force behind the Champion Centre’s Aboriginal Driver Training Program since 2008.

“He is also involved in the local school program, which is a cultural awareness back to country mentoring program for boys aged eight to 10 years. “The Outstanding Achievement Award is an honour, and one that Woody thoroughly deserves for his dedication to the program and to his profession. “He is well known and respected in the community, not only for his dedication to the program, but for his assistance and support to various Aboriginal individuals and families experiencing a wide range of issues. “The City of Armadale would like to congratulate Woody on the award and thank him for his commitment and dedication to the success of these Champion Centre programs,” said Mayor Zelones.

OFF ROAD Vehicle Registration A new initiative has been developed as part of collaboration between the City of Armadale and WA Police (Armadale) for residents to register their off road vehicles (ORV - trailbikes etc) which will then be used to compile a database that will help us locate owners of any ORV’s that we recover. A form has been developed and at this stage can be collected from Armadale Police Station for you to complete. You are

also encouraged to provide a photograph of the vehicle and receipt confirming your purchase if you can. The more information we have the better. The form will be attached to this post as well and hopefully you may be able to print it out and use that instead of having to collect a hard copy of it. Ref: www.facebook.com/wapolsemetro.

Residents of Serpentine/Jarrahdale and surrounds are being encouraged to be part of the world’s biggest fundraising event for cancer and register a team in Cancer Council Relay For Life. With cancer now affecting one in two Australians before the age of 85, Relay For Life is the perfect opportunity for people to have fun while raising vital funds for cancer research, education and support services. Cancer Council Relay For Life is set to take place on 28 and 29 March 2015 at the Byford Secondary College. Taking part is fun, teams of 10 – 15 register in advance, decide on a name, choose a theme and walk around the clock while raising funds. Cancer Council Relay For Life is held overnight to remind us that cancer never sleeps. The team members’ challenge is to keep their baton moving in a relay style walk/ run. Teams camp at the designated venue over the weekend and there are plenty of fun activities to ensure that participants come

away with a special experience they will remember. The growth of Relay For Life in Western Australia also comes with an increase in Cancer Council WA’s services for country patients including; accommodation for country cancer patients travelling to Perth for treatment, the Cancer Council Helpline, Regional Education Officers and practical and emotional support for those living with cancer and their family. Relay For Life was started in the United States in 1985 by Dr Gordy Klatt who lapped his local athletics track on his own for 24 hours to raise funds for cancer. This simple act has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with hundreds of Relays being conducted all over the world each year, raising millions of dollars for the cancer cause. For more information about this wonderful community event contact Denise Garner on 0407 385 020 or email relay4lifesj@yahoo.com.au, or register a team at www.relayforlife.org.au.

The 40th Anniversary Army Art Exhibition runs from 15 – 17 August at the Leeuwin Barracks in East Fremantle. The exhibition will feature original artwork by over 80 West Australian Artists. Shelley Taylor-Smith is the Guest Opener while The Esther Foundation is the 2014 major WA beneficiary. Each year an Artist in Residence is invited to create an artwork during the course of the event. Stephanie Boyle was extremely honoured when asked to take on the role for 2014. Raised in Dudinin, Boyle started painting watercolours in 1992 and completed a Certificate of Art and Design at West Coast College of Tafe. She is currently a member of the Watercolour Society of WA and exhibits widely throughout the State at group exhibitions and in private and corporate collections. Boyle recently spoke about being invited as Artist in Residence at the 2014 Army Art Exhibition. ‘I will be painting at the exhibition all weekend to encourage people to watch an artist at work. This has proved to be a very popular part of the exhibition. People, especially children, will sit for hours enthralled to see an image emerge before their eyes. ‘I have exhibited at the Army Art Exhibition for many years. It is always a fantastic exhibition with a diverse range of artwork, sculptures and so much more. Opening Night is a real highlight. I love the special feeling of the occasion as the Army Pipe Band performs as guests walk through the door. I am always so impressed by the enormous amount of work the Ladies Auxiliary put towards raising money for such worthy causes. I would encourage everyone to attend the exhibition.’

What is Tradies National Health Month? The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and Steel Blue have created Tradies National Health Month, to help provide valuable information for tradies on the importance of full body health and safety. Together we felt there was no dedicated health and safety information centre for tradies. Our organisations have teamed up to create a month that focuses on fullbody health and safety for tradies to improve awareness and support in this area. Throughout August, Steel Blue and the APA will promote health and safety tips. Tradies and trade companies will be encouraged to register to be a part of the Tradies National Health Month. A big-hearted musical comedy comes to life at Roleystone Theatre this July, featuring agoraphobia, adultery, 80’s nostalgia, kleptomania, strippers and a hysterical pregnancy. Written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso, and directed by Lorna Mackie, “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” is set in Armadillo Acres, Florida’s most exclusive park for mobile homes. A new tenant, stripper-on-the-run Pippi, wreaks havoc by coming between the Dr Phil-loving, agoraphobic Jeannie and her tollbooth collector husband, leaving it up to their trailer park neighbours to save the marriage. “This show is about love, friendship and the glorious drama that is life, set to some rocking country sounds,” Mackie said. “It’s been described as ‘South Park meets Desperate Housewives’. I’m a huge fan of modern musicals and ‘The Great American Trailer Park Musical’ has been on my radar for quite a while. Despite surface stereotypes and slapstick comedy, the show actually deals with some extremely complex themes and has a range of subtle layers to convey how the characters deal with real issues. I particularly love the very witty and well-written score and book, and was delighted to get the opportunity to direct the show.” Acting since her teens in the UK, Mackie originally

started as a soloist in a ladies’ jazz group, before performing in “Calamity Jane”, “The Little Mermaid”, and “Africa”. After emigrating to Australia, she worked with Marloo, Garrick, Roleystone and Blak Yak Theatres, performing in “The Geometry of Love”, “Meals Warmed Up” and “Intermission Theatre”, designing costumes for “Some Enchanted Evening”, “Get Smart” and “The Admirable Crichton”, and stage managing “Trainspotting”. In 2010, Mackie made her directorial debut with the musical “Reefer Madness”, scoring several Finley Award nominations, following it up with the Best Musical Production award for “Funny Business” in 2011, and more nominations for “Avenue Q” in 2012. “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” continues her love of alternative musicals, and as she admits, is unique in its ability to tread the fine line between conviction and melodrama. “There will always be a temptation to verge into slapstick and just play for laughs, but the true beauty of the show is the relationships between the characters and the moments of truth, which are truly sparkling,” Mackie said. “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” plays at 8:00pm on July 18th, 19th, 23rd, 25th, 26th, 30th, August 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th, with a 2:00pm matinee also on July 26th. All tickets are $25, and can be booked on 9397 5730, or at www. roleystonetheatre.com.au. Please note: this production contains adult themes and language, and is recommended for mature audiences. It is not suitable for small children. Roleystone Theatre is located at 587 Brookton Highway, Roleystone, opposite the Croyden Road junction.

If you wander through our Sustainable Garden on a daily basis, you might have noticed a scuffle in the chicken coop. The War of the Chooks, between Cluck Norris (Our Susex Hen) and Roadrunner (Our Aussie Game) for Ruler of the Roost was started when Mrs Renise Judge, once again, kindly donated some Heritage Breed Chickens to our School. Mrs Judge is well known in Poultry Breeding circles and we can highly recommend her. We now have eight hens of various breeds. We will go about naming the new chooks in Term 4. Mrs Judge will also be visiting our year 7 and 8 Horticulture students to answer their questions about Heritage breeds. Our banana trees are almost 3 years old now and we are delighted to announce the arrival of a bunch of bananas! Now we need to see if we can ripen them and end up with an edible bunch, as I have been told, that this might be tricky. We continue to use produce like fresh herbs and vegetables in the Home Economics classes. We harvested 24kg of Butternut pumpkin and have made several pumpkin dishes that proved to be a hit. The pumpkins were raised from seed by the 2013 Year 8 Horticulture group and used by this year’s Year 9 Food groups. The Garden remains to be a successful project run by teachers and community members. We would not be able to maintain it without the help of wonderful volunteers like Mrs Ipock and the weekend family volunteers. Families who are interested in caring for the garden over weekends and holidays can contact the front office and leave a message for Mrs Greyling.

Three times lucky as Rawsome scores top business gongs It’s almost as if Rawsome founder and director Laila Gampfer can do no wrong – after establishing her raw food company two years ago, she now has three major business awards to her name. In the past month, Rawsome was named Best Start-Up at the Telstra WA Australian Business Awards, also winning the Outstanding New Business and Excellence in Enterprise and Innovation categories at the Fremantle Business Awards. It also received a commendation in the start-up category at the 2014 Business News Rising Star Awards. “My team at Rawsome is full of passionate, hard-working people and these awards are wonderful recognition of the effort that has helped drive the business since it started,” Gampfer said. “Our stockists, customers and the community have supported us along the way, believing in our vision and positively reinforcing our business journey.” After being diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2010 and looking for gluten-free alternatives to fit with her nutritional plan, Gampfer established Rawsome to create raw food versions of sweet conventional products. The business operates from TV chef Anna Gare’s commercial kitchen in North Fremantle and now supplies “indulgent, healthy treats” to more than 100 independent cafes and retail outlets across Perth, including several IGA stores, and has also recently expanded to Melbourne. In May last year, the business scored a major coup by becoming the first-ever outside supplier of cakes and treats to Miss Maud’s 15 pastry houses – the famed Swedish institution had always previously provided its own. www.thevalleyreporter.com.au “Setting up a small business can be personally and professionally rewarding but a great deal of motivation and drive are required,” Gampfer said. “It takes leadership, time, courage and grit to establish a business and it can be relentless with many sacrifices along the way. “But with external support, both emotional and professional, and a clear focus and direction for the business, the rewards do come. “When they do, such as the recognition that comes from winning these awards, they are sweeter, richer and more profound.” Made without any cooking or baking from raw, quality ingredients such as nuts, fruits and a variety of superfoods, all Rawsome products are gluten, dairy, grain, egg and soy-free. “Products on the market continually disappointed me so I began to experiment and discovered ingredients in their raw state could, with a bit of creativity, be transformed into indulgent, healthy treats,” Gampfer said. “Initially, the experimentation was for my own palate and diet but my treats soon gained popularity with friends and family and more and more people were commenting on the potential for a business. “There was a strong awareness of the correlation between nutrition and health so creating products that people could enjoy while staying healthy became a major passion.” Gampfer said her team puts a good mix of love and effort into creating Rawsome products – and she won’t let anything with even the slightest imperfection leave her kitchen. “Rawsome only uses top-end ingredients,” Check out some of she said. “With so The VaLLey Reporter’s many people tired of highly processed favourite photos collected over the years at foods, they have really embraced the raw food http://www.thevalleyreporter.com.au/photo-gallery.html alternative especially when we work hard These photos are available for purchase as are many other to make the products photos within The VALLEY Reporter. taste great.” More details about Please details how Please email: email:thevalleyreporter@iinet.net.au fngrafix@ozemail.com.au forfor details ononhow Rawsome – literally to obtain a photograph “raw, so me” – are either as an A4 size or a available at www. 6” x 4” standard photo. rawsome.me.

testimoniAl 31 May 2014 Hi Maggie, Patrick, Jo and Linda, Just a short note to say thank you very much for your generous help towards the finalisation of the sale of our home. It has been a long process dealing with council to resolve an issue that none of us could have foreseen. Boy, was it a moment of celebration when the application was passed!!! I would like to thank you for the great advice. We all worked hard to achieve the best possible presentation of the property and your support through the whole process was invaluable, resulting in a sale in 3 days. Our estimation of ‘Real Estate People’ has been driven way up by the knowledge, hard work, advice, support and integrity that you and your team have shown throughout the journey. We don’t hesitate to recommend your team to anyone seeking Real Estate outcomes in the area. Rahima and I wish you all well and hope to see you around Roleystone.
