Recently, the Roleystone community has experienced a troubling bout of graffiti, with “tagging” defacing local business premises and bush shelters. The City of Armadale manages graffiti through a multi-strategy approach. See page 19

As you are probably aware, there has been considerable delay on the issue of the skate park, due to our councillor’s apathy regarding it. In place of this longstanding agenda, their priorities have been clearly demonstrated by their ongoing push for astronomical funds for the construction of toilets at Borrello Park, as well as focus on the men’s shed and community garden. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the men’s shed and community garden, but the skate park has been fought over and consulted for nearly 8 years now, with solid approval and fund allocation since June 2011.

On the 5th and 11th of March, I attended council meetings, with the intention of keeping the councillors honest, accountable and active in regards to the issue. I reminded them of the delay that has occurred, despite being reassured by them in May of 2012 that there would be no delay, due to Master Planning. I do not intend to give up on this matter, and will not show any compromise on the size and scope originally agreed upon for the skate park. I feel that our two councillors have made it harder to achieve the community’s goals regarding the skate park, and that it would be very unfair for them to reduce the funds meant for our youth agendas.

Roleystone Skate Park Project Pushes Forward On March the 11th, the Council unanimously endorsed the Cross Park “Master Plan”, which includes the skate park at the new roadside location opposite the Roleystone Shopping Centre. Now that the location for the skate park has been finalised, the actual construction can commence.

The skate park redevelopment was first proposed as a Councillors’ item by us,

followed by a petition and the combined support from both ward Councillors. It took a further year for the funding of the skate park to be finalised and endorsed by the Council in June of 2011. After an arson event, the siting was questioned, which contributed towards the additional “Master Planning” process of year-long consultations, community meetings, workshops and public forums. Things may appear to move slowly, but there has been a lot of effort put in behind the scenes from the community, Councillors and City officers alike.

The new location is a very popular and positive result for both the youth and the older community. The majority of skate park users are genuine, but are hampered by the actions of a few antisocial kids. By putting the skate park right next to the road and opposite the shops, where lots of people can see, the skate park will be a safer, friendlier place for the youth to hang out. This natural surveillance, design/ location theory is taken from “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.” One of the considerations for the recommended Skate Park location towards Jarrah Road was that this option, as well as providing passive surveillance from the street, was to enable areas to be developed as the site for a Community Garden and co-located Men’s Shed.

The existing skate park design draft will be adjusted to fit the new location, but will contain all the same design elements as previously determined by the youth community workshops.

The actual dates of construction are dependent upon the design adjustment and the work schedule of the Convic Skateparks Pty Ltd construction company, who construct most of the Local Government skate parks. We look forward to seeing the skate park construction start, as this is the first step in the creation of our community hub - a place for all residents to feel safe, welcomed and proud of.

Former Roleystone Theatre performer burrows down for moving Pulitzer Prize-winner Former Roleystone Theatre performer David Gardette is set to tug heartstrings next month in a moving story about grief, laced with humour, compassion and honesty. Written by David Steve’s Unique Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Vanessa Jensen at Melville Theatre, “Rabbit Hole” won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Eco Handmade and was also adapted into a 2010 film starring Aussie actress Art & Handycrafts Nicole Kidman. The story follows Becca and Howie, whose perfect life is challenged by a tragic accident they struggle to survive past.

While most of Perth’s young Little League Baseball players are taking a well earned break after a long hot season, things are getting busy for young Roleystone resident Ben Warrington. At just 11 years of age, Ben played over 125 games of Tee-Ball and Baseball at the Roleystone Tee-Ball & Baseball Club, before joining his older brother Jack at the Victoria Park/ Belmont club this season.

Ben’s natural ability did not go unnoticed at his new club, when he was selected in the Swan Hills Charter side to compete at this year’s Little League State Championships, which will be held at Mirrabooka Softball Complex over the Easter weekend. This is a great opportunity for Ben, since last year’s winning team of the State Championships (Perth North) also took out the Australian title, and ended up in Taiwan representing Australia at the Asia - Pacific tournament. Had they taken out the title, their next stop would have been Williamsport USA and the Little League World Series.

The Roleystone Musicians’ Club’s next club night will be on Saturday the 23rd of March, and will be at a new venue! Setup begins at 5:30pm at the Roleystone Senior Football Club, located at Cross Park on Jarrah Road.

The Munda Biddi Trail, named after the Noongar words for “path through the forest”, will enter its completion phase in April of this year, at which point it will be the longest, most continuous off-road cycling track in the world. To mark the official launch, 26 cyclists from across Australia have been invited to embark on the Munda Biddi Epic 1000, a 1000km journey lasting from the 7th to the 28th of April. Starting in Albany, the trail will pass through Cosy Corner, Denmark, Walpole, Northcliffe, Pemberton, Manjimup, Donnelly Mill, Nannup, Donnybrook, Collie, Lake Brockman Tourist Park, Dwellingup, Jarrahdale, Carinyah and Mundaring.

Cyclists on the Epic will be the first people in the world to ride the full length of the iconic trail. As it just so happens, one of these lucky few will be Roleystone local Peter Treasure, an avid road cyclist and mountain bike riding enthusiast. A year ago, he read an article about the Munda Biddi being close to completion, and joined the Munda Biddi Foundation in case of a launch event. About three months later, he received an email from the Foundation about the Munda Biddi Epic, and registered straight away. Despite being a FIFO worker in Newman, he makes time to cycle 50km a night out in the middle of nowhere. He has already taken on the challenge posed by smaller completed legs of the Munda Biddi Trail, and is very much looking forward to the Epic.

In January of this year, 11,000 Scouts from around Australia (and some from around the world) went to Maryborough in Queensland for an Australian Jamboree. Our Roleystone Scouts were among those who spent 12 days of fun, adventure and challenge on the East Coast, doing activities like Laser Tag, water fun at Hervey Bay, a visit to Australia Zoo, a mud obstacle course, a Scavenger Hunt/Amazing Race through Maryborough, and so much more. Every night they were entertained by performers including Justice Crew, Jessica Mauboy, Reece Mastin and Cosentino.

The Jamboree was truly a once in a lifetime experience for the Scouts, giving them the opportunity to challenge themselves and have fun as well. The community of Maryborough embraced the Scouting event whole-heartedly, pulling out all the stops to make the

kids feel welcome. Imagine all those Scouts wondering around a town the size of Busselton! The Jamboree has its own hospital, post office, and fire station. Only 10 days after coming home from our exciting adventure, we were horrified to learn about the devastation which the Maryborough community endured at the hands of the floods. Imagine if we had still been there, and they had to evacuate us all! The Scouts of WA are selling waterproof personal first aid kits for $15 each, to raise money for the Maryborough community. They are great for hiking, and can be kept in your car or even in your schoolbag.

Assisting animals at home with acupuncture

the basis for treatment with acupuncture, Chinese herbal compounds, and Tui Na (Chinese massage).

I have enjoyed the challenge of using the acupuncture and herbal compounds for treatment, which is all so different from the usual Western diagnosis and treatment process. The patients are usually quite calm and at home in familiar surroundings, which I find is a big advantage for alternative therapies. For the best results, a couple of treatments are needed to monitor the effects and further modify the treatment by using different acupuncture points and/or changing the herbal formula, if necessary.

The outcomes have been very positive for patients needing relief from osteoarthritis, itchy skin and the general symptoms of geriatrics. Some animals have indicated their reluctance for needles, so I have used red light therapy on the acupoints as an alternative method, which has been well tolerated. It is very satisfying to have the flexible options for treatment so that the patient Jack a male bulldog suffering with severe pain from osteo care is individual and gives arthritis - recent reports from the owner note that he is now the best response.

Since finishing my Veterinary Acupuncture studies in January, I have been kept busy applying the theory and practical aspects of Traditional Chinese veterinary Medicine (TCVM) to my furry patients at their homes. TCVM is a very complex medical system based on tongue and pulse diagnosis, as well as the physical symptoms observed in the patient, the history and information provided by the owner, the general demeanour and behaviour of the patient, and further differentiation of symptoms provided by palpation. All of this information provides the Chinese pattern diagnosis used as

oleystone Tee-Ball R and Baseball Club Inc. After several months of training and prestate carnivals, Roleystone U11’s States Squad participated in the TBAWA State Championships at Langley Park, which was held over the March long weekend.

The team performed exceptionally, winning 4 out of 5 games, and scoring the second highest total runs over the 3 days, out of any of the 85 teams competing. The kids were inspirational, and were fine ambassadors for RTBC. We are all very proud of their efforts and achievement of being runners up in their division.

The RTBC held its AGM and presentation day on the 10th of March. It was a great turnout, with the bouncy castle and gladiator duel making it fun for all. We were pleasantly surprised during our presentations when our sponsors Sam Saffioti from Roleystone Real Estate and John McSweeney from Creative Driveways & Fencing announced that they would be increasing their sponsorship for next season. The Roleystone Country Club’s new membership drive continues to be very successful, with over 60 new members joining in the last 6 weeks, many of whom are now using the Club’s facilities on a regular basis. It is good to see new faces, and just as much of a pleasure to welcome back previous members. Don’t forget, we are still offering special membership rates of only $22.00 per person until the 30th of June 2013, so if you know anyone who has been waiting to join the Club, now is the time! We now have meals and live music on Friday nights in the Windows on Wygonda Restaurant, meals are from 6.00pm onwards, then enjoy live music 7.30pm till 10:30pm. On Sunday the 17th of March, we held a St Patrick’s Day celebration with Irish music, meals, dancing, plenty of green beer, Guinness, and good times in general.

Attendees had the chance to enjoy the

new green entertainment area on the lawn, and to catch up with all the improvements made to the outdoor areas, including the refurbished pergola. Over the last week, members and visitors to the Club would have also noticed the new paintwork on the front entrance, and the refreshed look of the Club’s gardens and premises. Special thanks must go to Doug and Paul, who have been working hard on the surrounds, as well as to Malcolm, who put in many hours on the bowling greens. Whilst on the topic of Bowls, I believe congratulations are in order for our Ladies Bowls 2nd Division, who have been promoted to 1st Division. Well done! Our Men’s teams also had a good year from all reports. I look forward to catching up with as many of the members as I can over the next month over a quiet drink or two.

On Friday the 15th of February, the year 6 students from Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott attended a leadership retreat at Lumen Christi College.

We found out what it is like being a leader and what qualities you have to have to become a good one. We started with a prayer service before telling our class mates what we will try to achieve this year, and what our expectations for they year are.

We watched an interview with Adam Milson from the Perth Heat, who told us that you have to believe and always try your best at all times. After that, we wrote down five important ways to be a good leader, then created a circle of influence, which is all about how you talk to people. We had a fantastic day learning how to become great leaders! We are looking forward to our last year at Good Shepherd Primary School.

Year 6 Leadership at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary Elouise and Liam, the Year 6 Head Girl and Head Boy of Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, are learning alongside with their classmates about the importance and significance of leadership. They were elected last year, per tradition, and have 6 different prefects to help collect school fundraisers, speak at assemblies, and to show support to younger children. We also have special leadership teams to help

teachers and other students. Our Year 6 leaders began the year with a Leadership Retreat, where they got to learn firsthand about the roles and responsibilities that come from being a leader.

The Sport and Special Events team is made up of the wonderful sports captains from our school. This team helps the sport teacher Miss Shaw to set up the school carnivals, special events and any other sporting functions. The Library team help Mrs Archibald, our Library Officer, to promote events happening in the library, for example the huge celebration of Book Week.

The Environmental team keeps the school grounds looking neat and tidy, in addition to feeding our school animals. In particular, they have helped with our award-winning Bidjara Project. The Music and Liturgy team assist Mrs Newman and Sister Kath in organising whole school liturgical events, and to help classes celebrate liturgies each weak.

As you can see, the year 6 students have a lot of responsibility this year, but we believe that they can be great role models for all the younger students at our school. Being leaders at our school will help prepare them for the future, so it is a responsibility they gladly accept.

E-Watch Update Week ending 12th March 2013 The last couple of weeks has seen our area subject to increased Police attention with a special operation within our boundaries. We subsequently saw a decrease in burglaries occur which is an excellent outcome. However, we still ask people to be particularly vigilant and report suspicious behaviour as it occurs on 131 444. The most prevalent suburbs for burglary offences are again Armadale and Kelmscott/Camillo. Most of the stolen vehicles are from offenders stealing keys from inside houses, frequently when doors and windows are unlocked in what could be termed a “soft” target.

Report suspicious behaviour There used to be yearly operations such as “dob in a druggie” where people were encouraged for a week to phone in information to Police. We now ask that people do this all year round. Even if you think your information is low in value, it may be the small piece of the puzzle that we need to complete a picture. There are always opportunities to report suspicious behaviour/smells etc through crime stoppers and the general Police line as

The first Roleystone Markets, held on Sunday the 3rd of March, were an unquestionable success! It seemed like everyone from our fabulous Roleystone community made it out to enjoy the day. There was only just enough room on the oval to fit everyone in. The concert provided by the Roleystone Musicians Club was, as always, professional and had a lot of people up and grooving! (go to page 8 to see the photographs of The Redeemers, Hawkstone, Kim Bettenay and Izzy). The calibre of wares for sale were high, and a very positive reflection of markets to come. The food was delicious, and had many of us going back for more! Thank you to all who took the time to complete the survey. All the feedback received by the organisers was complimentary and positive. The official blessing ceremony will take place at Memorial Park, Armadale on Saturday 23 March at 10am.

Unplugged Acoustic Folk Roots and Blues In the afternoon of Sunday the 10th of March, the Roleystone Country Club hosted the latest session of Unplugged Acoustic Folk Roots and Blues.

Although starting off a little bit slow, the session soon took off and got into full swing. It was really good to see more people coming along to take an active part in playing and performing.

A big thanks to Dale for some really beautiful classical guitar work, which made a few of us feel like we should practice some more.

This, with the return of one of WA’s best piano accordion players, whom used to grace us at the old venue, really brought the afternoon alive. Thanks to everyone who came along, and to The Country Club for their support.

Ingredients for the spaghetti: 1 zucchini 1 lebanese cucumber Ingredients for the salsa: 12 cherry tomatoes, washed and cut into quarters 10 black kalamatta olives, pitted and cut into slices 2 artichoke hearts, preserved in olive oil and lemon juice 6 small leaves of rainbow chard 1/8 cup of olive oil Sea salt or Himalayan salt, to taste 1 Tbs of garlic chives, chopped finely 1 Tbs of fresh basil, chopped finely 1 Tbs of fresh parsley, chopped finely 1 Tbs of sunflower seeds A sprinkling of pine nuts or sunflower seeds to garnish.

Method for the salsa fresca: Chop all ingredients as indicated, leaving the seeds and pine nuts whole. Add them all to a bowl and mix well with salt and olive oil, before setting aside.

Method for spaghetti: Using a spirali machine or small spiraliser, place first your zucchini then your cucumber in, then turn the device to create long spaghetti.

Pile these up on a lovely looking large platter, then add the oil of your choice and massage gently into the pasta.

When they are adequately lubricated with oil, top with the salsa fresca and garnish with fresh basil and pine nuts or sunflower seeds.

You can drizzle extra olive oil over the top or add fresh chillies if you like.

So, I took out my spirali machine, grabbed a few items from the fridge and veggie garden, and this culinary delight was born! My family and I love the fact that we can eat pasta without the heaviness of traditional carbohydrate pasta.

Roleystone resident Kim Martin is taking to the stage this April in a moving comedy from the author of the TV series “As Time Goes By”. Written by Bob Larbey and directed by Phil Mackenzie at the Roleystone Theatre, “A Month of Sundays” follows two residents living in an aged care home, facing the difficulties of growing old and enduring painful family visits with dignity and humour.

Martin plays Cooper, who voluntarily left his family to avoid depending on them, only to watch his friend Aylott slowly drift into senility. “Cooper is an aging man who is physically deteriorating, but still has a very sharp mind,” Kim said. “He’s determined not to let his circumstances get him down, so he devises little flights of fancy with Aylott while also flirting with the nurses.”

Martin has been involved in theatre for more than 40 years, as an actor, director, musical director, composer, playwright, lyricist and pianist. He has featured in shows in Northam, Kalgoorlie and Roleystone in particular, where he has been a regular for the past three decades. He has also worked with Attic Theatre and the Graduate Dramatic Society.

In 1985, Martin won the Finley Award for Best Musical for “Esther”, and also scored the 2000 Best Play Award for “An Ideal Husband”.

More recently, he has directed “The Crucible”, “The Club”, “Influence” and “The Teahouse of the August Moon” and he has also performed in “By Jeeves”, “Into The Woods” and

“Cosi”.

“To me, ‘A Month of Sundays’ appealed because it’s a witty script by a writer with high credentials,” Martin said. “It deals with the problem of aging with humour and compassion, which is something everyone must face eventually. My main challenges are to convincingly move like someone who is quite restricted physically, and to balance the humour with a depth of feeling when needed.”

“A Month of Sundays” will play at 8:00pm on April 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th and 13th, with a 2:00pm matinee on April 7th. Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for concession. Join up for WA’s biggest survey for Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo! The fifth Great Cocky Count (GCC) will take place for one hour at sunset on Sunday 7 April. This communitydriven annual survey aims to count as many Carnaby’s as possible at their night-time roost sites on a single night each April.

Roosts are places where blackcockatoos rest at night. Important information on the location of critical roosting habitat for cockatoos is collected through the GCC, and is increasing with every survey completed. The 2012 GCC found there has been a 40% decline since 2010 in the number of Carnaby’s in the Perth region, where we have three continuous years of

robust survey data.

Survey sites are located all over south-west WA, so there’s a good chance there’s a spot nearby that needs you! Get more information and register as a volunteer at www. birdlife.org.au/carnabys/greatcocky-count.
