Hello and welcome to the Bigger! Brighter! Better! Urban Fox lifestyle magazine. Our new look publication contains all the best aspects of its A5 predecessor but is bursting with new features, celebrity interviews, competitions and much, much more. This month in our Fashion, Beauty & Health section we bring you a local exclusive with fashion guru Gok Wan. The local Whetstone lad, turned author and TV presenter, reveals how his own battle with weight as a teenager, continues to impact his life and work today. As with Gok, body image can have a huge influence over the decisions we make, so for those of you considering breast augmentation,

check out Nuffield Health Hospital’s ‘What you need to know’ guide, before taking the plunge! If the makeover you’re envisaging is more home focussed, our Properties & Interiors section will set you on the right course for enhancing the value of your property, making sound furniture choices and adding a splash of colour to your decor with this season’s micro-trend for indigo and teal. If you’re out and about this month, our Arts and Entertainment section provides an overview of ‘What’s On’ in Leicester, as well as an opportunity to meet ‘60s iconic artist Sir Peter Blake at The Frog & Mouse Picture Company on Wednesday 28th September. Looking for new places to wine and dine? Our new ‘Honest Restaurateur’ feature, introducing readers to an alternative to the antiquated restaurant review, gives restaurateurs the opportunity to provide a genuine précis of their own establishment. Then you can have fun being the judge!

Finally this month we caught up with Sam Waley-Cohen. Perhaps more renowned for his success at this year’s Cheltenham Cup and his role in reacquainting the now married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Waley-Cohen is also the owner of Portman Healthcare with practices across Leicestershire. Turn to pages 20-21 for the full interview. What with all this, not surprisingly there has been a buzz of excitement in the editorial office in the build up to the launch of the new-look magazine. We hope you enjoy it too! We’d love to hear comments from both our long-standing and new readers, so please contact me . Until next time

FOOD FOR THOUGHT GOK WAN INTERVIEW JOURNALIST: RICHARD ALDHOUS

TV style extrovert Gok Wan on devouring his food demons

H

e’s the man who has shaped a thousand men and women, styling a generation of trendsetters and fashion failures alike. Yet up until now the anatomical analysis has played out in one direction, and one direction only. Because for all Gok Wan’s blare and bravado, it’s always been the challenge to make others look good naked... until now. After celebrating a decade in the spotlight as arguably the leading fashion consultant on our television screens, 36-year-old Gok has been brave enough to turn the tables. While other celebrities may release autobiographies as a convenient way of remaining in the public eye or topping up their bank balances, the Anglo-Chinese

presenter and broadcaster has discovered the penning of ‘Through Thick And Thin’ as a remarkable and defining life milestone.

“i don’t tHink tHere is eVer a good time to release an aUtobiograPHy, is tHere?!” He Jokes. “They’re draped with clichés and superstition, but for me it certainly felt like the right time. I didn’t know I was ready to do it, but when I sat down and started putting experiences and emotions into words, it felt right to carry on.” Gok admits that the creative process of the book brought to the fore issues he’d worked hard to keep to one side. Yet there’s a definite desire within the pages to bathe in the cathartic therapy that only an autobiography can provide. And it’s no easy journey. Born in rural Leicestershire to a Chinese father and English mother, Gok’s oriental appearance would always have him stand out in a crowd. In addition, his parents owned a succession of restaurants and he came to regard food not only as a comfort, but a financial savour too. “I was bullied and teased because of my cultural background. From that, food became my best friend – and we saw much too much of each other.

And of course, I had a strong yet completely flawed understanding of what food was - that was linked in some way to my parents’ business. From something like that, things spiral. “I hung around with the stranger and less-liked in school because I was, in turn, disrespected by those who saw my heritage and my frightening 21-stone teenage frame as different and unacceptable.” Add in issues over his sexuality and Gok was a child in an unhappy place. “One day though I had an epiphany (and some may say, my first makeover) when I asked my mum to take me out to buy some new clothes. We went to Next and I got a pair of chinos, brown suede shoes and a jumper, and I had my hair cut and styled.

“it made me Feel so mUcH better. i’d not lost weigHt and my body was tHe same, bUt a cHange in cosmetic aPPearance was tHe First steP towards me gaining in conFidence.”

again to a set of new peers. A disastrous crash diet – in which he lost half his weight in just a few months – was extreme. “I guess that diet symbolised the confusion that was still going on inside me,” he admits. “I desperately wanted to be that other person, but at first I had to shake off the perception of myself that I was unworthy. And that was tough to do.” That Gok did pull himself out of a trap of self-loathing and social exclusion is remarkable. And in working his way up through make-up departments on television and film sets, he forged his own career; one that in 2011 enables him to thrive on shaping the physical and psychological goals of others. “I’ve worked with some major celebrities over the years, but the ultimate for me is being around ordinary members of the public. We started ‘How To Look Good Naked’ in 2006; it has been - and continues to be - an amazing experience, showcasing fantastic people with incredible stories. We’re confronting issues that are right up there, because body image and appearance is arguably more important to people

in 2011 than at any point in the past. “What I do is certainly heart-warming for others, and it’s about reaching and assisting the right people, but I must admit the shows continue to help me to face my own demons.

“tHere is an emPowering message tHat liVes on, and Probably tHe First steP is to look in tHe mirror and be Honest aboUt wHat we see, becaUse tHat’s by Far tHe toUgHest Part.”

Heading off to drama school brought about its own setbacks with Gok essentially having to validate himself all over

Shopping: The stone-age way!

What kind of shopper are you: a Hunter or a Gatherer? Let me explain.

M

y children and I were heading speedily homewards, as their feeding hour was due, when out of the corner of my eye I saw it...THE perfect winter coat. MY winter coat, the one I had been searching for all season. There it was hanging just inside the shop and before I knew it I had dived in through the door, grabbed the hanger, and was trying it on. And how good did I look? Colour wonderful, style and fit perfect! Oh yes, this really was mine and I was at the till paying before the children could complain (well nearly).

Melanie Taylor House of Colour Image Constultant For any style advice please feel free to contact me. Melanie.taylor@houseofcolour.co.uk www.houseofcolour.co.uk/melanietaylor

Although born a Gatherer, out of necessity I have learnt to become a Hunter. I dash in, attack the garment, club it to death and then carry it home victorious! In the years BC (before children) I would have started at one end of the high street and purposefully covered the ground, sussing out exactly where the very best patch of berries were, before returning there to make my purchase. Neither method is right or wrong, nor is it dependant on your gender. Love shopping or hate it, we are all very individual in our approach. Sometimes, as Hunters, we go shopping absolutely determined to find one particular item. We become so focussed that all the other wonderful garments are overlooked. Gatherers on the other hand are in danger of going back to the same old bushes, buying the same old style because it’s safe. But let’s face it, a bit boring too! If we understand some of the psychology behind our shopping patterns we can escape our comfort zone and learn to have far more positive experiences. Hunter or Gatherer, it helps

to understand what works for you and relate it to the trends in the shops. This will leave you looking and feeling great as well as avoiding paying for clothes that you simply don’t wear. In my next column I will be answering some of the most commonly asked questions I have been asked during my years as an image consultant. If you have any questions, whether it be on style, shape, colour, occasion or trends, which you would like me to address, please contact me.

In the meantime Happy Hunting… or Gathering!

who each of you thought you had found isn’t who either of you really are. What’s going on? From the beginning of life we’re biologically programmed to seek out a bonding attachment with another. Coupling up is nature’s way. Yet throughout life, few other experiences evoke the same level of vulnerability, fear and insecurity. When we ‘find’ our mate there is usually a lot more going on beneath the surface than we consciously realise. We’re often unaware

of the unmet longings and needs that each of us bring into the relationship, yet there tends to be an underlying belief that our current love-partner will meet all our needs. We place a lot of pressure on each other to do just that. It’s a tall order. haven’t i Been here Before? We all, to some extent, carry our experiences of early significant relationships around with us. The loverelationship is the perfect breeding ground for recreating similar scenarios

that we experienced in the past. This triggers off old familiar feelings. For instance: people who have experienced an emotionally distant relationship with a parent often gravitate towards the same in adult life. There’s comfort in familiarity, however hurtful or fearful it may have been. It may be that unconsciously we are attempting to put right what went wrong with the parent. taking responsiBility for yourself Blaming each other is destructive. It can stir up feelings of inadequacy and defensive reactions. We can’t make the other into someone he/she isn’t but we can work on ourselves. People sometimes find it helps to try and understand how their past experiences of ‘love’ relationships might be being played out in adulthood. It’s difficult to see how we may be contributing to the problems, particularly when we feel hurt and let down. But if we can allow ourselves to become a little better at identifying our own emotional sore points, it can help us to understand more about what is happening.

The Jockey vying to make you smile Sam Waley-Cohen is a man on a mission. A mission to make you smile.

T

This year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.

his year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner is for most people known as a jump jockey. This is understandable.

At Christmas he won the season’s Christmas Classic the King George VI at Kempton, followed by glory at the Cheltenham Festival, before coming second in the Grand National. What less people know is that this is not his profession. He rides as an amateur, for the love it. For work he is aiming to make Leicestershire smile in a different way, through his dental practices, Portman Healthcare. An unusual combination? Putting aside the opportunity to find clients in the weighing room, dentistry and racing do not seem to be natural bedfellows. But then little is normal in WaleyCohen’s life. A third string to what some would call his professions is possibly ‘match- making’.

20

He hit the headlines before this year’s Royal wedding, credited with getting Prince William and Katherine back together again. So between acting as cupid and riding how did he come to be running dental practices? “To be honest it was a bit of a

light bulb moment” he says. “I was laughing with some friends about the Austin Powers stereotype of terrible British smiles and it made me think ‘why do we have such terrible teeth?’ We are a first world country, who care about our health and our appearance, and yet often don’t look after one of the most fundamental areas of both, our teeth! It made me reflect on my own experience of going to the dentist and why I didn’t go

more. Basically I wasn’t going because I didn’t feel the dentist was there to look after me! I couldn’t get an appointment when I wanted one, the dentist didn’t explain what treatment I needed or how much it was going to cost. All in all it wasn’t a great experience. I wanted to bring something new to dentistry. To demystify it. In a nutshell to bring expert clinicians together with a much more accessible approach.

My aim is to make sure people can get great care, with great service at a price they can afford. At Portman Healthcare we always aim to look after each patient as we would want to be looked after ourselves.” So how does he combine racing with dentistry? “Balancing the demands of Portman Healthcare and racing can be a challenge” reflected Waley-Cohen

“but surprisingly there are interesting similarities between dentistry and racing. Ultimately they are both about the pursuit of excellence.”

With two practices in Leicester and Long Run favourite for next year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, it is hard not to get the sense that in the pursuit of excellence we will be hearing much more about Waley-Cohen, both on and off the horses.

hen you grow up with a product for so long, you assume certain things should be a “given.” So it was with me and Jaguar engines. They should be at least 6 cylinders in a straight layout, consume petrol, be 4.2 litres in capacity and nothing less would do! Today’s 6 cylinder engined Jaguars are 3 litres in a “V” formation, diesel powered and supremely smooth and economical. However, with an ever increasing need for more choice, even lower fuel consumption and emission xf speCifiCation 2.2 litre i4 diesel

levels, Jaguar have recently launched the 2.2 litre, 4 cylinder XF model.

Prices start at £30,950 For tHe se model UP to £43,050 For tHe range toPPing PortFolio. Having spent some time with an early production 2.2, I have to say how quickly my pre-conceived notions were banished and how good this car really is. Start-up revealed a very nicely insulated and smooth engine with only a vaguely noticeable 4 cylinder thrum. The car pulled away very cleanly from standstill and provided a constant power delivery to the required speed with the very minimum of fuss. One journey which combined motorway, city driving and hurried cross country delivered fuel consumption of over 40 miles per gallon which for a car of this size is very respectable. The claimed 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle does not seem to be unrealistic. This low fuel consumption is assisted by the incorporation of an 8 speed automatic gearbox

into all 2012 XF models, including the 2.2 we are testing here. You might ask why it is necessary to have 8 speeds when 6 are probably quite sufficient. But at a constant 70 mph, the engine rotates at 1500 rpm. The benefits are clearly quite incredible! Another advance seen on the 2.2 litre car is intelligent stop/start technology, which is quite a feat on an automatic. This allows the engine to stop when the car is at a standstill and will restart as soon as your foot is removed from the brake pedal. Start-up is instantaneous and entry into roundabouts and other road junctions can be handled with absolute confidence. The stop/start system will work when the car says it can work and you have to have faith in the car to decide when the appropriate conditions are for the system to become operational. Other detail changes for the latest XF models are slimmer headlights which include daytime running

lights, new rear lamp LEDs and boot lid detail, revised infotainment and touch-screen layout and different, softfeel dashboard switches. There are a host of under skin enhancements that build on the XF’s multi award winning design and reliability. To conclude, Jaguar can be rightly proud of what they have achieved with this car. It is a 4 cylinder car that needs absolutely no apologies. Indeed it should be bold and shout about what it offers in terms of driver comfort, fuel economy, levels of specification and a general feeling of wellbeing.

If your little one has had a bad night or they’re due a feed then it’s probably best to leave the camera alone until things have calmed down and you can get more relaxed pictures. Believe me, red or tearful faces never translate in to winning pictures. In the early days try and avoid using your camera’s flash by using window light instead. If you’re outdoors, go and find some shade rather than bright direct sunlight, this will avoid squinting and you’ll be rewarded with pleasing

If you’ve got a close-up setting on your camera use that, or if you have a DSLR use a macro lens to fill the viewfinder for the best results. A great way to get a head and shoulders portrait is to go for the ‘over the shoulder’ shot, with baby looking over a willing volunteer’s shoulder. Come in close again to fill the viewfinder and focus on the eyes. If you’ve a zoom lens, then use the longer end -100mm say and if you’ve a portrait setting also use that. With a DSLR go for the aperture priority mode and set a wide aperture of f2.8 or f3.5 for example so that the background drops out of focus and all the viewers’ attention will be drawn to your bundle of joy rather than the room behind. Don’t forget props, a hat or a toy can not only add a sense or scale but

can instantly add the “ahh” factor. They also have the added benefit of keeping the little one’s attention and adding colour to your photo. Why not try setting your camera to its black and white mode. Any picture instantly looks timeless and classic and because it’s different to your normal day to day experience it’s more arresting and arty! So that’s it, easy really! Well maybe not. With baby photography you’ll find that there’ll be quite a lot of “nearly got it” photos and only a few great shots. But despite how much you adore the little one,

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

An audience with… Sir Peter BLAKE, Brad FAINE & Brendan NEILAND Following a joint exhibition ‘Icons Perceptions Metaphors’ at Leicester’s New Walk Museum this summer, on Wednesday 28th September three of Britain’s leading contemporary artists will be in town.

S

ir Peter Blake, the Godfather of British Pop Art; Brad Faine, a master printmaker and Brendan Neiland, one of the country’s foremost painters and printmakers, will open a new exhibition of collectable art at the Frog & Mouse Picture Company’s Gallery in Cank Street, close to St Martin’s Square in the Heritage Quarter. The artists will attend an exclusive lunch at the nearby The Case restaurant. Attendance at the lunch is by ticket only and profits will be donated to the British Heart Foundation’s 50th Anniversary ‘Mending Broken Hearts Appeal’, which all three artists have been supporting with their contribution to the ‘Breath of Life Portfolio’ currently on show at the Gallery.

26

Gallery owner Dayle Flude explains,

“The luncheon is a fabulous opportunity to meet these outstanding artists and enjoy great food and one-on-one conversations about their work and influences.” The Exhibition opens to the public at 2.30 pm and includes exciting and highly collectable fine art limited edition prints. The prints are original, first generation works and each have been proofed and editioned under the artist's executive control. If you would like to attend the pre-exhibition lunch, limited tickets are available for £25 from the Frog & Mouse Picture Company. Please call 0116 2530313 for more details.

Artist’s Profile Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter Blake, 80 years old next birthday, is renowned for his connection with the music industry. He famously produced the iconic Beatles’ ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album cover, plus others for Paul Weller, The Who and Oasis. His work crosses all generational divides, and inspires great respect from younger artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. Many of Sir Peter’s works feature printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. These works perfectly capture the effervescent and optimistic ethos of the sixties, but are also strikingly fresh and contemporary. Sir Peter Blake

Brendan Neiland

Brendan Neiland was ‘The Keeper’ of The Royal Academy Schools for two years and enjoys continued success as a painter and printmaker. Neiland's paintings are both figurative relating to the city, and abstract in their structure, reflection of light and modulated colour. A preoccupation for the industrial helps him in encouraging people to feel a greater sense of involvement with their environments.

Brendan Neiland

Brad Faine

Born in 1945, Brad Faine studied painting and printmaking at Leicester College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London. Faine’s recent work is focussed on multi-layers of meaning and imagery within a grid format; giving the viewer a wealth of visual information to absorb. Often in response to current affairs Faine’s works are witty visual conundrums.

n case you didn’t know, juniper’s the main flavouring for gin and knowing London gin distillers source juniper berries in the Alps, I went on a search whilst on my summer walking holiday. To my delight they were next to every mountain track and conveniently ripe in late August. Perfect timing to add wonderfully pungent flavour to any autumn stew or vegetables! When I lived in France a favourite recipe was beef with blackcurrant and juniper –easy, fruity and aromatic and loved by children and grown-ups alike. For the blackcurrant I used a good glug of crème de cassis but for that

sweet, fruity edge Ribena works just as well. This stew is only bettered by using venison instead of beef (available in some supermarkets now but also at Leicester Fish Market). You can of course buy juniper berries from the spice rack in most stores so don’t think you have to walk up a steep mountain track to try this recipe treat the family or share it with friends as the autumn evenings approach.

The Honest Restaurateur

Tells us about your restaurant and the idea behind it?

W

e named the restaurant Firenze after the Italian city (Florence) where Lino and I met working together. We wanted a name that meant something to us.

Since opening in October 1999 we have enjoyed ongoing recognition in The Good Food, Michelin and Hardens guides. Most recently we have been awarded 2 Rosettes by the AA Guide. What is the philosophy and vision behind your cuisine? To produce honest Italian food with a modern twist, that transfers it from being simply good, into excellent and exciting. Our award winning wine list offers a whistle stop tour of Italy’s vast

and historic viniculture, as well as the new and innovative blends. How would you describe the ambience in your restaurant? Firenze is reminiscent of a little bit of Italy, fresh in the summer and warm in the winter. On busy nights it’s buzzing and lively and yet on quieter days it lends itself to a sense of intimacy. Children can come too but we have found in recent years that children feel more comfortable in our sister restaurant Boboli, over the road in Kibworth Harcourt. What is your signature dish? There are two dishes that spring to mind. People drive for miles for our risotto and panna cotta. In twelve years and 48 menus, there has always been both on the menu in one guise or another.

Do you cater for special dietary needs? Yes, indeed! Italian food lends itself naturally to many special diets (vegetarians, low-fat, glutenfree etc.) We do not print separate menus, preferring to talk with the customer and tweak the dishes to suit. The strangest request was for a lady who had an allergy to latex; even the asparagus was no go as the bundles are held together with elastic bands! Very tricky!

Language difficulties also play a part and impressions that mainstream services provided are not sensitive or culturally appropriate. The HearNow project is staffed by trained professionals from BME backgrounds who have been talking to BME organisations, to families and to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the heart of their communities. Mr Mann, who is himself profoundly Deaf, said: “We are working directly with BME communities at grassroots level to offer appropriate support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and their families. But we know we have only

e often have requests from clients to install fruit trees, whether as a traditional orchard or even as one off specimen plants. Our latest outing was an run of nine espaliered apple trees to act as both a screen from the garden opposite and also to give a constant supply of cooking and eating apples from August right through until November. We did have the luxury of being able to have nine different varieties in order to get the full seasons range out of them. But how wonderful for the client to know that she will have fresh apples for at least four months of

my adVice to clients is always tHe same wHen it comes to wHat FrUit tree to Plant. Plant wHat yoU like to eat and Plant tHe Varieties tHat yoU know. We all have this notion that we want to grow old English varieties and this would be idyllic but there are several things to consider. Firstly how reliable are they with cropping and have you got the correct flowering group of other fruit trees planted around them in order for pollination? Also the reason we all know the ‘Victoria Plum’, ‘Conference Pear’, ‘Bramley Apple’, ‘Morello Cherry’ etc. is because they are proven reliable croppers that are fairly disease resistant. So if you are the sort of gardener that would like to be able to pick fruit

straight from your own tree but without having to do too much work, then pick the dependable varieties, albeit they’re the ones you can buy in the shops. other things to consider include: n Keep your fruit trees small, so harvesting the fruit is easily within reach.

n Thin the fruit out as

this a) stops branches becoming overloaded and potentially snapping b) enables the fruit left to develop properly and c) can help against some diseases.

Finally there is another side to the fruit tree that we must not forget…its blossom.

MY TOP 10 TIPS

Here are on acHieVing tHe most ValUe For yoUr money and Choosing furniture that Will Work witH yoUr Home and yoUr liFestyle.

1

First you need to know the size of the rooms you are going to be furnishing, right down to windows and walls. Simply grab a pencil and paper and start sketching. If you have any original pieces you are keeping, then make sure to work them into your room plan.

2

Once you’ve decided what would look good where and what size furniture you can purchase, you need to set your budget. Decide how much money you are willing to spend and stick to it!

3

Determine the type of use the furniture will get. Does it need to be functional and withstand high usage or is it a show piece?

4

Take into consideration your lifestyle. Do you have pets that are going to claw or chew? Do you have small children? Do you often entertain friends and family?

BlueBell 3-seater sofa (aubergine), £1080 , sofa.com www.sofa.com

5

Once you’ve narrowed down what you’re really looking for, make a list itemising each piece including sizes, colour preferences, material finishes and any other finer details. You’d be surprised at what you’ll forget once you start looking in stores and online. It’s easy to get distracted with all the choices, so you must be focused.

6

Don’t just choose the latest trends that you’ll tire of in six months. Furniture is a big investment, so keep your tastes in check and choose furniture that’ll look and feel good for years to come. Mix classic pieces and add some smaller ticket items and accessories to create your overall look and to hit any current trends you like.

7

Don’t forget window and wall treatments and lighting can also help create your overall design theme.

8

Keep your furniture colours easy to work with, that way you’ll be able to update your scheme just by changing the smaller ticket items in the future.

9

Once you’ve found that perfect piece of furniture, check the construction of it, watch for low quality assembly. Don’t take any piece of furniture at face value, get underneath and check the entire construction. Find out where it’s made and the materials it is made from.

10

Once you’ve made your choices, all that’s left to do is order it and wait for delivery. Be sure to place orders as early as you can if you are working towards a specific deadline for something, as lead times can sometimes be as much as 12 weeks. Prepare the room, disposing of old furniture before the new furniture arrives, so that when delivered it can be immediately positioned in place. It’s that simple! Stress free furniture shopping, accomplished with just a little bit of pre-planning.

Adding Value

EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR MONEY AND THEIR INVESTMENTS, AND PROPERTY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS YOUR HOME IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENTS YOU ARE LIKELY TO MAKE. nsurprisingly GREEN ENERGY DECOR

U

then, we are all interested in how we can add value to our properties but what are the best and most effective methods?

EXTENSION

Extending your home will only add value if you add practical space. If you only increase the size of one or two rooms then don’t expect to necessarily recoup your cost. However, if you add an additional bedroom, en suite, utility or garden room, this generally provides extra useful or aspirational space.

46

The appearance of your property is an easy and cost effective way to add value. Perhaps not as much value as an extension but upgrading, updating and enhancing is a certain way to improve the feel and ambience of a property for any prospective purchaser.

ENSURING THAT DECOR, FINISHES AND SOFT FURNISHINGS ARE IN KEEPING WITH THE AGE AND APPEARANCE OF THE PROPERTY WILL ALSO GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF INVESTMENT AND VALUE. Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most important rooms in the house; updating these will work wonders.

Green energy may be ‘a la mode’ but make sure that you consider the long-term return on investment. Whilst green energy products - solar panels, ground source heat pumps, water harvesting techniques etc. - are increasingly common in newer homes, if you have an older property ensure you speak with a specialist regarding the most cost effective solutions for you. Get the basics right first i.e. invest in insulation and an efficient boiler.

THE GARDEN

A property’s outside space is all too often forgotten, yet it is important to many people, especially families. Having a neat, tidy, well maintained garden could be invaluable for the price

of your property. Gardens should be just as practical as any other room in the house. They are often very personal spaces, so whatever you wish to do to your garden just make sure that you look after the boundaries, make the most of whatever space you have and don’t hide it away.

YOUR ESTATE AGENT

Of course I would say this...an estate agent is potentially the most important person in adding value to your home.

WE SEE ALL TYPES OF PROPERTIES AND CAN ADVISE YOU ON WHERE THE VALUE LIES AND HOW TO ENHANCE IT TO ACHIEVE THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT. A good estate agent should be able to guide you on what is most relevant to you and give you the detail you need to make the most of your property.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS THE RIGHT WAY DURING TIMES OF RECESSION OR ECONOMIC SLUMP, MANY BUSINESSES CHOOSE TO CURTAIL THEIR MARKETING BUDGETS.

as a means of marketing their online activities. But what steps can you take to ensure that you do not waste time and money?

Yet at this time more than ever, it is important that your products/services are more visible than those of your competitors. If you looking to increase your sales there are many marketing tools which can help – email and web marketing, direct mail, magazine advertising, social media, press releases, sponsorship etc. In this month’s Urban Fox, our in-house Print Solutions Consultant, Harry Padmore provides some useful tips on how to produce ‘promotional leaflets’ in order to create the most successful return on your investment. Until the availability of online marketing, for many businesses leaflets were the marketing tool of choice. Even today some companies will use leaflets

Choose wisely – whilst designing your own leaflets may reduce costs, don’t underestimate the value of a specialist designer/printer. A well designed leaflet can add revenue to your business and vice versa. Ask for samples of their work.

Harry Padmore The Urban Fox For more advice on producing promotional leaflets or to request a design/ print quote, contact harry@theurban-fox.co.uk

1

Don’t compromise – whilst it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, pay particular attention to factors including quality of design, paper density (gsm), minimum print run requirements and turnaround time.

2

Take advice – if you’ve chosen well your designer/printer should be able to guide you to the best solution for your business.

3

Be concise – don’t 4 overload your leaflet with too many words or images as these will clutter the design and lose impact. Also avoid jargon, long sentences and convoluted words. Be recognisable – don’t reinvent your brand too often as you could lose your identity and customers. Once you have a winning formula stick to it!

5

Check, check & check 6 again – your reputation is at stake, so scour the final proof to ensure there are no inadvertent errors.
