On the home front, we’re decking the halls, doors and basically anything that doesn’t move with this year’s merriest and brightest trends. Bring the outside in with a Garden Grotto theme, Let It Glow with scents of the season, or trade up your traditional holly wreath for a minimal metal vibe. We’re turning up the style dial in the kitchen too. Puddings of Comfort & Joy serve up a happy ending to your Christmas lunch, while our tips on how to plan the perfect party will guarantee your guests Eat, Drink & Be Merry all night long. And although everyone knows that calories consumed at this time of year are neither judged, nor counted, Rebecca Watts is on hand to tell us how to pre-empt those New Year’s resolutions in ‘Tis the Season. If like me you’ve not yet started your gift shopping, don’t panic, we’ve got it covered. Check out our gorgeous gift pages, packed with winning ideas from all your favourite high street and online stores. Tick. And don’t forget to give a little something to your community too. Whether it’s your time, money or skills, do your bit to spread peace and joy this Christmas. We’ll be taking a break in January but join me again in February for our Fresh Start edition. Until then, Merry Christmas and a Happy 2020 from all at Urban Fox.

FASHION & BEAUTY

No other time of year is more snap-happy than Christmas. Check out these cameraready beauty products and make each click count.

Blank Canvas

A brand originally developed for photo shoots, Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream, £29, will create a flawless look in front of the lens. Wear alone or under foundation for additional coverage. The camera picks up on any shiny areas, so keep a loose translucent powder handy to touch up prior to any photo opportunities. We love Shiseido Synchro Skin Invisible Loose Powder, £38.

Maximum Impact

Eyeliner is a must in photos. Keep it simple with a thin line hugging the upper lashes or ‘wing it’ for a more daring look. Combine with a dark smoky eye for maximum impact. An industry favourite, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, £20 has a budge-proof formula. False eyelashes offer great eye definition. For full-on drama opt for strip lashes or choose individual ones for a more natural look. In a hurry, then apply a volumising mascara. Clarins Supra Volume Mascara, £22, delivers perfect lash definition and will hold all night long.

Finishing Touches

Perfect your pout with GlamGlow, £18. This multi action fizzy exfoliating treatment, will instantly renew, energise and smoothen the look of lips. Pucker up. Make the most of your lips with a matte, highly pigmented lipstick. Created using Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Matte Revolution’ formula, this Hot Lips 2 Patsy Red Lipstick, £28, creates the illusion of fuller, wider, lit-from-within lips.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

'Tis the

Season... …to overindulge. Get a head start on those New Year resolutions, by minimising the effects of Christmas, says TheStudios40’s Rebecca Watts.

Eat, drink and be merry. It’s just about moderation. Here’s some ideas to see you through the holiday period and into the New Year, energised and ready to face the challenges ahead…

Early Bird

With a busy social diary, it’s easy to skip your usual exercise sessions. Get up an hour earlier and fit in your gym session, home workout or even a long dog walk. You’ll feel better for it and it’ll give you more time in the evening to get ready for those all-important parties.

NEAT Freak

Our NEAT energy is the calories we burn other than exercising i.e. through our day-to-day activity. On indulgent days, earn the calories by being more active. Clean the house, stand up at work, walk in your lunch break, or even fidget more. Just keep moving.

Dancing Queen

Don't spend the evening sitting and drinking, stand up and socialise instead. If there’s music, take

advantage of the party atmosphere and move those hips. Dance the night away and burn off over 250 calories.

Smart Cookie

If your evening is going to feature alcohol and indulgent snacks, eat lighter but nutrient dense healthier meals through the day - feeding your immune system. Alternatively, minimise the damage by having a healthy snack before you go out. You’ll be less likely to overload on unhealthier options once you’re out.

"If there's music, take advantage of the party atmosphere and move those hips." Diligent Diner

At the work Christmas lunch, think about what you’re going to eat before you order. Select the fish option, skip the roast potatoes and choose a starter or dessert, not both. Eating slowly will mean you enjoy your food more and probably eat less.

Sleeping Beauty

If only it was that easy! But seriously, we have so much going on over the festive period that our sleep can suffer. Sleep is when our bodies have time to recover, repair and replenish, so be conscious not to wipe yourself out.

Water Baby

Keep knocking it back. The water that is. Make sure you're properly hydrated as being thirsty can often be mistaken for hunger. This can lead to a disaster at the buffet table. Drinking plenty of water will help fill you up and make you less likely to indulge.

Teetotaller

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but it’s definitely worth trying to control your alcohol intake. Have set days off, alternate water with alcohol, delay your first glass to the dinner or offer to drive. If you’re conscious about calories opt for white spirits with a dash of soda and lime.

Every Christmas dinner should have a happy ending. Serve up a showstopper with these easy yet decadent desserts from Waitrose.

URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2019 21

CHOCOLATE & RASPBERRY TORTE Preparation time: 25 minutes, plus cooling Cooking time: 50 minutes Serves: 10 Ingredients: 200g frozen raspberries 150g Fairtrade golden caster sugar 3 x 90g bars Divine Fairtrade 70% Cocoa Smooth Dark Chocolate with Raspberries, broken into chunks 100g unsalted butter, softened 3 medium free range eggs 100g ground almonds 50g self-raising flour 50g Fairtrade cocoa powder, plus extra for dusting 150ml soured cream 1 tsp freeze-dried raspberries, to decorate Crème fraiche to serve

1

Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4; line a deep, 20cm cake tin with baking parchment. Heat the raspberries and 50g sugar in a small pan with 1 tbsp water until broken down, then simmer for 6-7 minutes until jammy; set aside to cool. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water; set aside to cool.

2

Beat the butter and remaining 100g sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, then the almonds, flour and cocoa, followed by the soured cream.

Fold in the chocolate until everything is just combined. Pour half the mixture into the prepared tin, then pour the raspberry compote into the middle, spreading it out but leaving a 2cm border clear around the edge. Cover with the remaining chocolate mixture and bake for 35-40 minutes until cooked.

3

Cool completely in the tin. Dust with cocoa powder and sprinkle with freezedried raspberries. Serve with crème fraiche to cut through the richness.

APPLE & BLACKBERRY OAT & POLENTA CRISP Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes, plus cooling Serves: 6 Ingredients: 600g seasonal dessert apples, peeled, cored and chopped into 2cm cubes (450g prepared weight) 150g blackberries ½ lemon, juice 75g light brown muscovado sugar 75g plain flour 75g jumbo oats 30g polenta Pinch salt 75g unsalted butter, cubed and chilled Single cream, Greek yogurt or vanilla ice cream, to serve

Images and recipes: Waitrose

1

Preheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Put the apples and blackberries in a medium ovenproof dish (about 1.5 litres in volume). Pour over the lemon juice with 2 tbsp of water and toss with the fruit.

2

Put the sugar, flour, oats, polenta and pinch of salt in a mixing bowl. Add the butter; rub together with your fingertips to make a wet, clumpy crumble, then sprinkle over the fruit.

3

Bake for 35 minutes, then allow to cool for 5 minutes. Serve with single cream, Greek yogurt or a rich vanilla ice cream, depending on the level of decadence required.

WINING & DINING

ROAST CHERRY & CHOCOLATE MESS Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus cooling Cooking time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 400g fresh cherries, halved and then pitted 3 fresh bay leaves 2 tbsp white caster sugar, plus 1 tsp for the cream 2 tbsp Cooks’ Ingredients Pomegranate Molasses 250ml whipping cream 50g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), finely chopped ¼ tsp vanilla bean paste (optional) 4 meringue nests (or 12 mini meringue shells), very roughly broken

1

Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. Put the cherries in a medium roasting tin and toss with the bay leaves, 2 tbsp sugar and the pomegranate molasses. Roast for 5-7 minutes to get the juices going and bubbling at the edges (don’t cook the cherries through). Set aside until just warm.

2

Meanwhile, put 4 tbsp cream and 2 tbsp water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Put the chopped chocolate in a small bowl, pour the hot cream over it, and stir until smooth. Spoon 1 tbsp into the bottom of 4 small tumblers.

3

Put the remaining cream, 1 tsp sugar and the vanilla, if using, into a large bowl. Whip to very soft peaks. Add a generous dollop to each glass, then a few chunks of the meringue, some cherries and juice. Repeat, finishing each with a final small dollop of cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve straight away, with any extra chocolate sauce on the side.

HOMES & GARDENS

Eat, Drink & BE MERRY Planning on hosting a soirée at home this Christmas? Check out our tips on how to create the perfect party atmosphere.

Numbers

Begin planning as early, as people get booked up quickly at this time of year. Calculate how many people your home can accommodate. On average 60% of those invited will show up, increasing to around 75% if you’re inviting only close friends. There will always be last minute cancellations so invite one extra guest for every 10 people that have said they’re coming. And if it’s important to have an equal number of men and women, invite more men as they tend to show up less. Should fewer people than expected show up, just put the music on louder and have some extra drinks to hand. If you have an air of defeat, the party will too.

Invitations

Buy, make or print your own invitations or keep it simple and use e-Invites. They’re cheaper, easier to send and enable you to keep track of the RSVPs. If you’re going down the theme route – kitsch, festive or elegant – and dress code is important to you, include details on the invites. Also, if you want people to leave by a certain time, add the end time too. It helps guests avoid the awkward ‘who leaves first’ scenario and you don’t have to go to the extreme of putting on your PJs to clear the room!

Ambiance

Arrange furniture so that guests can move around the room easily. Although most people will mingle, do allow seating for up to 15% of your guests. If your space is small use a large centre table to serve food on, but if you have a large room, use multiple small tables to create mini food stations. This will encourage guests to move around the room more and not cluster in one area.

Lighting helps establish the mood, so avoid unflattering overhead lights and use mood-enhancing candlelight, table and floor lamps instead. Finally, music will help your guests relax, so put together a playlist that matches your theme or the atmosphere you want to create.

Catering

Even if you’re only planning a drinks party, you don’t want your guest to go hungry. Over a 4-hour period cater for five or six types of canapés with guests eating one or two of each. If you know your guests will eat more, adjust accordingly. On the booze front, on average each guest will drink two drinks in the first hour and one drink each hour after that. Allow a 25% buffer to be sure that you don’t run out! Punchbowls are a great way of serving a welcome cocktail or opt for a signature drink to fit with your theme. Otherwise keep things simple with beer, wine and fizz. For nondrinkers provide a selection of chilled non-alcoholic drinks, including water to hydrate those consuming alcohol in between drinks.

Finally, don’t stress. Nobody is checking for dirt, although a spotless bathroom is a good idea. If there’s music on and people have a drink in their hand and food to eat you’re doing great! URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2019 33

A bit of

A DO ‘Tis the season to be jolly, but you just can’t be bothered to go to the office do? Limit the pain and not your career, says Kirsty France, with this guide to surviving the party season. It’s that time of year when businesses all over the country treat their employees to an end of year celebration. How you feel about this will probably depend on how much you like your colleagues. Back in the days when I worked in an office, I knew plenty of people who loved the Christmas party and made a real occasion of it. For the rest of us it felt like a bit of a trial. So, can you really enjoy your work Christmas do and come out of it with your professional reputation intact? Believe it or not, it is possible. Here’s my survival guide…

FORM ALLIANCES

Whatever your views on work parties, there is bound to be at least one other person in your office who feels the same. All you need to do is find them. Then you can adopt tactics that will help you survive until you can decently sneak off home. You could team up with someone who lives near you so you can arrive together or find the other person who will take the mickey out of the ones crowding around the boss trying (and usually failing) to curry favour. Finding the right person to spend time with will make the

evening a lot more fun and time will pass more quickly too. Whatever you do, don’t make requests about who you sit next to at dinner. There’s probably one person organising the event and the table plan, and they’re already stressed enough.

DON’T GET DRUNK (SORRY!)

You may scoff at the idea of staying relatively sober at the party. Maybe you love the Christmas do and want to make the most of it, or perhaps a decent quantity of alcohol is the only thing that will get you through it. Obviously, it’s your decision, you’re a grown up. However, there are a few things to think about before you decide. Do you really want to be the person that everyone (including the boss) is talking about because you were so hammered you couldn’t stand up? It’s also worth considering how much of your night will end up on Facebook. If things get really out of hand you could even find yourself out of a job. Being seriously drunk or getting into an

altercation with a colleague during the party, can amount to gross misconduct which is a sackable offence.

LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS

If you’re going to your work do expecting it to be an amazing night out, guess what? It won’t be. Your employer will almost certainly have restricted the open bar to beer, wine and soft drinks. The DJ will be catering to an audience that ranges from the office junior to the person about to retire, so the music will be mostly be cheesy floor fillers. If you can’t stand Mariah Carey buy your earplugs now. Look for the positives. You’re getting a free meal and a few drinks courtesy of your boss. It probably won’t be the highlight of your social calendar but it’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. The first time I went to a work do with that attitude I found myself having quite a good time.

Have a great Christmas (and enjoy the party)! URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2019 45

Bell

Six years after she fronted the latest festive favourite from Disney, Kristen Bell returns as Frozen 2’s Princess Anna in a better place both on and off screen.

LIFE & WORK

Disney films are a staple of every family’s Christmas plans, and their 2013 effort Frozen was no exception. More than that, however, Frozen was heralded upon its arrival as being akin to the classics created by the ‘House of Mouse’ during its long tenure as the undisputed leaders of animated flicks during the early Nineties. Given the sorts of stories that that period encompassed – from Beauty and the Beast to Aladdin and The Lion King – even lead star Kristen Bell was unsuspecting of the reception the original project would be met with. "I don't think anyone could have anticipated how popular it was," the 39-year-old says. "All we knew was that we fell in love with each other as a cast and had so much fun together. We love the filmmakers – they're incredibly collaborative – and I know everyone says that, but this is so true. They allowed me to take things from deep inside me that I wanted to say and represent. I was thinking, 'Can't we have a Disney princess that talks too much, trips a lot, is super goofy, but loves everyone around her?’" Bell’s very modern princess Anna has made a popular return in sequel Frozen 2, where fans get the chance to hear the star of Bad Moms, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Veronica Mars showcase her oft-hidden musical talents alongside co-star Idina Menzel. “I studied music in college, but even so it's been a while!” she laughs. “I have relied on looking toward people like Idina and my voice teacher in Los Angeles to give me that kind of advice — to

say, ‘Remember, stick with it. You're not humming to the radio. This is a job that you have, and this is a performance that you need to practice for.’” As well as co-stars, the Michiganborn Bell could look to her off-camera life as a mother of two young daughters to help her drum up the dedication and hard work needed to be both an acting and singing success.

There is a lot of excess noise that comes with allowing everyone to have a say in your self-worth. “I used to think there was no way to get ‘balance’,” she nods. “And recently I've kind of isolated how I feel about it. I think in order to get ‘balance’ you need to get comfortable with uncomfortable feelings.” That may be flexing her vocal cords during a Disney song, or adapting her professional life to better suit her personal responsibilities. “When you are at work you will miss your children,” she says. “When you are at home you will think about work opportunities. It will never go away and the sooner that you get comfortable that you're never going to be happy the better. But there is a release in that – once you move into acceptance mode – and you make the best educated decisions for your kids.” It’s not just juggling her two daughters, or her marriage to fellow

actor Dax Shepherd, that has revolutionised how Bell sees herself. In recent times, the star took the time to do some work on herself away from the cameras, with hugely positive results. “My thirties have been much, much better than my twenties,” she agrees. “I was constantly stressing myself and dealing with a lot of intense anxiety and selfquestioning. I never felt happy in my career and I was constantly feeling that I wasn't living up to my own image of myself and who I wanted to be and where I felt I should be at that stage in my life. I was my worst enemy. I was always trying to be perfect and make everybody happy and instead I was felt that I was never good enough.” Now nearing her next milestone birthday, Bell scooped her first Golden Globe nod for her work in comedy series The Good Place. This, as well as her return to the character of Anna only serves to underline how important the Frozen franchise has been to Bell’s recent career – and how much the star has thrived off-screen as well. “Today I'm so happy not to be trapped in that mindset anymore,” she nods. “There is a lot of excess noise that comes with allowing everyone to have a say in your self-worth. Once you shed that, you instantly become (ironically) a more likeable version of yourself... It’s so basic but it took me a long time to figure that out. Now I’m so much happier and so much more accepting of myself and faults in myself and others.”

MY WAY

Partywear favs

Debbie Goddard “I love my job! Every day brings different challenges but the people I work with are amazing”, says Debbie Goddard, Store Manager at Lands' End Outlet, Oakham. I was born in Leicester the year Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. I was the third of 3 daughters, with my younger brother following a few years later. As a child of the seventies, I had an abundance of freedom, playing outside with the other kids that lived in the village of Newbold Verdon.

Once back home in the UK, I worked initially in hospitality, at the Falcon Hotel, Uppingham. It was there I met my husband Andrew. We bought a small cottage in the market town of Oakham and I switched career paths to work in retail, at a local store called Acorn.

Our homelife was busy. Mum worked tirelessly as a nurse and Dad was a long-distance lorry driver. But when we got together on a Saturday night to watch It’s a Knockout, there were always a lot of laughs.

When we found out we were going to be parents with our first son Drew, I decided to stay at home and be a full-time Mum. Our family grew again 6 years later with the arrival of our daughter Eloise.

After primary school, I attended St Martin’s Convent School in Stock Golding. I can still hear Sister Louis chastising me for wearing lip gloss or having my skirt too short! From St Martin’s I went to English Martyrs’ Catholic School in Leicester. Wow what a culture shock! Although, it was a pretty cool place to be in the eighties among all the trendy city kids.

In 2001, I decided to go back out to work on a part-time basis, looking for a position which offered flexibility around school hours. I was offered a job at Lands' End Contact Centre as a Customer Service Advisor. I was a little apprehensive having been out of the workplace for so long, but it couldn’t have been better. Everyone was so welcoming.

My first job after leaving school was as a receptionist for a family business in the city centre, but I soon decided I wasn’t quite ready for a standard 9 to 5. I spent the next 2 years working in Paris as an au pair. The family I worked for were amazing and we still keep in touch today.

2 years later, I changed roles and became a Senior Sales Assistant in the Retail Outlet. It was such an exciting and challenging time in retail, not only due to the introduction of the internet and online business but also interacting with customers face-to-face and learning about new

products. I was later promoted to Assistant Manager and then Store Manager a short time after. I love my job! Every day brings different challenges but the people I work with are amazing. We were voted team of the year in the Rutland Mercury Business Awards in 2011 and I’ve personally been voted by my team as Manager of Year in the Best Company Survey. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family (Drew and Eloise are now 25 and 19) and walking my French bulldogs in our beautiful countryside. I’m also a massive fan of upcycling and can often be found hunting out a bargain in one of the many charity shops we have around the county. Visit the Lands' End Outlet Store, Oakham.
