Crashers Every bride wants to look their best for their big day, so this month we spoke to Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts for advice on how to lose a few pounds and tone those all-important arms and upper body that are so often on show

Many brides-to-be will crash diet before their wedding but there is no need to be so drastic, especially at such a stressful time, you’ll need all the energy you can get. Simply follow these 10 basic nutrition rules plus my 12-week exercise plan and you’ll be picture perfect in no time.

Avoid pre-prepared / processed foods and takeaways Reduce starchy carbohydrates by 50% Eat at least 2 fistful size protein portions per day Double your intake of vegetables No more than 2 pieces of fruit per day Ensure you prepare meals and snacks to avoid bad choices Drink 3 litres of water per day No fizzy drinks or fruit juices. Max. 2 x tea and coffee per day Keep alcohol to no more than 5 units per week Allow yourself one small treat per week (up to 500 calories)

EXERCISE PLAN To really make a difference, walk 20-30 minutes a day and introduce resistance exercise and high intensity interval training 2-3 times a week. Those not used to exercise should consult their GP before starting any new routine. You will need a simple resistance band set to undertake the progressive workout below. It’s important to progress the workout as your body will get used to it and results will slow. The resistance band set will have different strength bands, so choose a band that makes it more difficult to complete the exercise, if it gets too easy. Other fears include physical appearance on the day, loss of freedom, not living up to Bride’s expectations and fear of parenthood. These anxieties are common and can often lead to sleeplessness, wedding nightmares, irritability and difficulty concentrating. The best advice is to keep the lines of communication open throughout the whole process. Talk about how each of you is feeling and what worries you have. You might be surprised to find that you share many of the same concerns as your partner. Share the planning. Sometimes brides organise everything and grooms can feel left out which can lead to anxiety if they do not know what is being arranged. Decide early what needs to be organised and set a schedule. This will reduce anxiety. Use a wedding planning internet site to check nothing obvious has been left off the list. It is of equal importance to find quality time in amongst all the planning. Sometimes when all you talk about is weddings, you can lose sight of the joy. Take some regular time to remember why you’re doing this! Finally your friends will be excited and happy for you. You can both speak to them about your concerns and you will often find they shared your experience. Go out and remember to have fun! Friends and family can be a huge support at this special time. If you do feel that you or your groom’s fears are having an impact on your wellbeing, do speak to your GP or a counsellor. ccording to the Office of National Statistics, the number of marriages in the UK has increased for the second year running. So maybe we’re a nation of romantics after all. Actually many of these marriages are second time around for either the bride or groom. In fact, the ONS figures show that in 15% of all weddings, both partners are marrying for the second time or more Whether you or your husband-to-be have been married before, you deserve to enjoy your wedding as much as any firsttime bride. But you may have even more to think about this time round. First there’s the practicality of where you will live. Are you moving into his home or will he move into yours? If you both own

property, will you sell one or both of your homes to make a fresh start in a new place together?

More importantly, as well as any children you may have together, one or both of you may have children from previous relationships and you’ll need to consider how your new status will affect your blended family. You should seek the advice of an expert family solicitor, specialist family mediator or collaborative lawyer to resolve issues relating to the arrangements for your children. This is especially important if you are moving to a new area and changing schools or arrangements for contact, which you’ll need to agree with your former partner.

Protect your income Now that you’re married you should protect yourselves against the financial consequences of becoming unable to work due to a serious illness, or death. The longer you leave this the more expensive the cover will be; a 30 year old non-smoker male could get £25,000 of critical illness cover for 35 years for around £18 per month, compared with a 40 year old paying £31 per month for 25 years.

Build an emergency fund If you don’t have an emergency fund, consider making one as a top priority. This fund should be set aside for any unexpected expenses, such as major home or car repair. Aim to save between 6-12 months’ worth of your household expenses as this will help bring some financial security should disaster strike.

Save for retirement All employers over the next few years will have to provide employees with a company pension scheme so make sure you join! Two contributions are always better than one, and why would you want to miss out on that extra money? Although it’s better to start saving early, for those late starters it

is important to know that is never too late to start contributing to a pension.

Save regular amounts Save as much as possible in an Individual Savings Account (ISA) each year. The current overall limit for the tax year 2013/14 is £11,520 per adult. This can all be invested in a stocks and shares ISA, or if that’s not for you, you can split the limit between a stocks and shares ISA and a cash ISA. You can take money from your ISA as when you need it, plus any gain is tax free.

Update your beneficiaries If you have any existing policies prior to getting married such as pensions, life cover policies etc. your insurance company or employer will require you to complete an up to date nomination of beneficiaries form, so they know who they need to pay funds to in the event of your death.

n one of her most glamorous roles yet, Hollywood favourite Nicole Kidman takes on Grace Kelly, against a backdrop of politics and passion in 1960s Monaco. Australian bombshell Nicole Kidman is one of those actresses who has never been typecast. Working consistently since her first film appearance in 1983’s BMX Bandits, the Academy Award-winning star has always kept audiences on their toes. From lavish musical Moulin Rouge! to psychological horror The Others, and modern interpretations of Bewitched and The Stepford Wives, Kidman has always had the power to captivate.

Now, the former Mrs. Tom Cruise is preparing to tell the story of Hollywood starlet Grace Kelly’s crisis of marriage and identity during a political dispute between Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and France’s Charles De Gaulle, and a looming French invasion of Monaco in the early 1960s. Arriving in cinemas around Christmas, Grace of Monaco is not a biopic of the actress, but it takes a snapshot of her life, as Kidman explains: “It’s not a fictionalised documentary of Grace Kelly – just a small section of her life in which we see her humanity, and the strengths

“Yes, there are periods of intense loneliness associated with one when your marriage falls apart, and you still have to do your job, like going out to promote a film. The irony of it is that you do something like the Cannes Film Festival where you’re surrounded by thousands of press and photographers and all these people. Then you go back to your hotel room at 3am and you’re ordering room service by yourself and watching TV, thinking ‘I’m completely alone.’ and weaknesses that go along with that.” Kelly started her acting career in 1950 and married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in April 1956, to become princess consort of Monaco. She retired from acting to concentrate on her royal duties and had three children – Caroline, Albert and Stéphanie, who was in the car with her when she suffered a stroke and crashed in 1982. While Kidman’s own marital crisis with Tom Cruise ended in 2001, she’s been happily wed to second husband, country music star Keith Urban, since 2006.

I felt completely isolated. It’s a very strange phenomenon, because in a way that was my most lonely period, and yet I was surrounded by the most people and the most attention and hype at that stage. But that’s life, isn't it, and you overcome that to find relief and companionship again.” Indeed, Kidman now clearly couldn’t be happier. Having been involved with singer Robbie Williams and rock star Lenny Kravitz between her divorce and meeting Keith Urban, she feels she’s finally reached a level both in terms of relationships and work.

“Well, I’m in my 40s now. I’ve had a very erratic career – by no means has it been stable!” Kidman laughs. “Right now I’m in a place where I’ve been able to do some work that kind of sits very well with who I am. In terms of having it all, I’m not sure what ‘having it all’ is, but I am so grateful for the love in my life and the people I’m now sharing my life with. I’m supported by a man who is an artist himself. He writes and he’s a musician and so he comes from that place creatively. He understands so he’s able to give me a support system at home.” Urban said recently of his marriage that it’s the first time in his life that he’s open to doing everything for a relationship. “Having a husband who’s willing to do that – yes, I feel loved and I feel absolutely that I’ll give that back in exactly the same way,” Kidman smiles. “I offer exactly the same thing back because for me, our relationship making it through is more important than anything. But at the same time, I stay in that place of humility with it. We just do the work to stay together, and also a lot of it is just pure enjoyment of each other. Q

My Fiancée and I are both keen gardeners, and as such would like to give out some horticultural themed wedding favours. What would you suggest?

Packets of hardy annual seeds represent an easy option, as they can simply be sprinkled on any empty piece of garden your guests may have, and will add that little bit of extra colour. Maybe try an appropriately named variety such as Love in a Mist (Nigella), which has an attractive, fern like foliage that appears around the flowers giving a mist-like appearance. The flower itself is an attractive soft blue, which in turn develops into inflated seed pods. Varieties of bulbs could also be given, and Pink Hydrangea

why not consider snowdrops? Always one of the first bulbs to appear in the spring, their snow-white flowers will compliment any garden. Another very popular choice could be Narcissus 'Bridal wreath', this paper white daffodil has lovely perfumed flowers and can be encouraged to bloom around the Christmas period. For those of you who like to 'grow your own', how about something a little different; try tomato seeds, traditionally known as the 'Love Apple'.

I’m getting married next summer and would like to decorate our marquee with some architectural plants. What sort of thing would you recommend?

For simple and elegant ‘wedding-plants’ why not consider Topiary; these are typically slow-growing plants that can be clipped into a wide range of styles, highly regarded for their architectural value. There are a vast variety of shapes, from the more basic balls, cones, and pyramid forms, to complex designs such as animals, cars, ships and pretty much anything else you like! For a simple yet striking effect, nothing works so well as an ornamental conifer. Most commonly shaped in either a spiral or cone, these plants come in a wide range of colours such as blue, gold, green

and grey, and vary from 3 to 10 foot in height. They will work well as both single specimens or clustered together to make a main feature. Other plants to consider would be Bay Laurel (Laurus Nobilis) for its aromatic foliage, Box (Buxus) for a smaller formal display, Hydrangea with their large white, blue and pink blooms, or English Lavender for their small, elegant and scented flowers. For the earlier wedding, you could even consider Exochorda 'The Bride', which will be bursting with pearl-white flowers from spring to early summer. URBAN FOX SEPTEMBER 2013 45

With recent surveys indicating that people value 'getting on the property ladder' as a higher priority than getting married, we asked Peter Wyatt, Director of local Estate Agent Fothergill Wyatt what young couples should consider when buying their first home.

P

urchasing together is a commitment in itself, so first of all it is essential that both partners feel equally comfortable with searching for a home. When married the home becomes a marital asset but co-ownership beforehand must also be carefully considered as the relative financial contributions may not be equitable. You should consult a solicitor to confirm exactly how a property is shared and owned. As joint tenants both parties own the whole of the property, but you may consider Tenants in Common whereby each party owns a share. This also presents a useful way for ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ to offer support in a purchase whilst protecting each party’s input. Identifying the right location and style for your new home should lead you to consider proximity to work, friends and family, comfort, local conveniences, and your long term aspirations alongside affordability. You should draw up a wish list of all the key features you want from

a home and remember that you will always have to compromise on one or other of the items on your list. The trick is to identify what you absolutely cannot do without, and what you may or may not pay a premium for. Then it comes down to choice in the market; how many properties fit your criteria?

Furthermore, the ability of couples purchasing out of rented accommodation means they are ‘chain free’ and provide a strong covenant to sellers. Ensure you fully understand your tenancy notice period, and discuss how long a purchase may take with your agent. My Way...

Rachel Simpson The Leicester graduate and vintage shoe designer talks to us about her work, DMU and how her love for vintage all started I’ve always been into art and design. When I was little I was constantly making or drawing something. I ended up in design as opposed to the purely art side, as I like to be creative yet reach a practical solution. Shoes are the perfect answer to the whole art / design relationship... you can be wonderfully crazy with the idea, but you still need to create a practical design.

Signature shoe: The ‘Mimi’

Initially I wasn’t fussed on going to university, it was the course I fell in love with. At the time, footwear design was only offered in Leicester or London, and after looking around the department at De Montfort I fell in love and couldn’t wait to start shoe making! I loved my time in Leicester, it has a diverse culture like Birmingham, but on a smaller scale so you can really get to know the place. The people really top that off, and I would go as far to say Leicester people are amongst some of the friendliest in the UK! After graduating in 2001 I became a successful freelance designer, creating collections for a number of high street brands, including River Island, Wallis and Jones. I later went on to work for Next, as well as an independent high fashion women’s label, before launching ‘Rachel Simpson’ in 2008.

It all started with a couple of old sewing machines, in a workshop at the bottom of the garden. I made my sister’s wedding shoes and spotted a gap in the market for brides wanting something that little bit different... vintage inspired shoes which are beautiful, affordable and wearable and look equally at home with a pair of jeans as with a wedding dress! I launched to the public with only 12 pairs of samples; now we employ fifteen people and supply bridal boutiques all over the world. We have over 30 styles in the bridal collection, a debut men’s range and a separate unisex fashion brand ‘agnes & norman’ which launched this year, so I guess you could say things have changed somewhat since my days in Leicester!
