HELLo AnD WELCoME BACK to tHE uRBAn Fox MAGAZInE. Grab your tent, sunglasses and wellies; the summer music festival season is upon us! And in this month’s issue we offer the ‘Best of the Fests’ with The Urban Fox guide to summer ’12 festivals including Camp Bestival, Isle of Wight, V and Reading festivals. There are also a number of local offerings, not least the summer sundae Weekender (17-19 August) at De Montfort Hall and Gardens. once described by steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6 Music) as “The Grandson of Glastonbury”, this is one not to be missed.

Headlining the Larmer tree Festival this year is Paloma Faith. she talks to The Urban Fox this month about her love of festivals, her forthcoming album ‘Fall to Grace’ and her dream to own a flat in notting Hill. Whilst Paloma and the rest of the notting Hill set are likely to have little trouble nailing this year’s festival fashion trends; for the first-timers amongst you, our ‘sos’ feature offers advice on how to prepare for rain, shine, mud and most importantly fun! For those of you not enamoured with the thought of ‘mud’ or ‘camping’, you could consider ‘glamping’ á la Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow. Pod pads, yurts, tipis and hotel tents are all the rage for the more discerning festival goer. For more on this trend, our travel feature ‘Carry on Glamping’ gives a flavour of what’s on offer in the UK. This month we also celebrate Father’s Day. Check out The Urban Fox essential gift guide, with fashion, accessory,

With the English weather being what it is, the most important item to take is your wellies. You can get wellies in all sorts of vibrant designs so match them to your outfit and be extra cool. Apart from wellies think converse trainers, they too come in

fun colours and designs. Other essential fashion items for this season’s festival goer should include denim cut-off shorts, scarf, something crochet, paisley or Union Jack, a floral teadress and/or a maxi dress. Keep your bag reasonably small and make sure you

have a zip, as there’s nothing worse than hunting for your keys and phone in the mud. A cross body strap bag is great as you can dance and keep your hands free. Something like a satchel or fringed leather bag should do the trick.

When you go through the menopause the ovaries produce less of the hormone oestrogen and this drop in oestrogen causes the hypothalamus to work extra hard on maintaining hormone levels, upsetting its sweat regulating function. This causes sudden surges in temperature and the uncomfortable ‘hot flush’ women “of a certain age” experience.

he Retreat, Oadby, is celebrating its 10th year in business and owners Dawn and Jade have much to celebrate. since opening in 2002 the salon has gone from strength to strength, with the girls attributing their success to their high standards of treatments and products. The salon specialises in Decléor facials, which utilise pioneering aromatherapy treatments and essential oil formulations to suit every skincare need. In addition they offer an array of other therapies including massage, waxing, tanning, hand & feet treatments, as well as specialist beauty services for children, mums-to-be and men. “Whether you are looking for total relaxation, me-time or the perfect antidote to

the stresses of working and family life, The Retreat is the perfect choice” say the girls. And for those wanting to take the spa experience home, The Retreat also offers a wide range of Decléor, Guinot, Fakebake, Australian Bodycare and Jessica products available to purchase from the salon. With this quality of products, standards and expertise it is not surprising that clients return to The Retreat again and again. The girls explain “our regular clients love the calm and serenity of the salon and to thank them for their repeat business we operate a popular loyalty scheme. Visit us 10 times and you’ll receive 10% off your total spend. You can end up with a free treatment!” Later this year the

successful duo hopes to be awarded Decléor Aroma Gold salon status. And if their treatments are anything to go by, they’ll be going for gold in no time! T H E

hen I say the words slow cooking I bet you think of cold wet days and warming pots of stew, but slow cooking can be great in the summer too. This month’s recipe is perfect for eating al fresco – we love it with buttered new potatoes and homemade coleslaw. Cook it ahead of time and use to

make the best picnic wraps ever, or pile into little pots when hot and press it down with some of the juices to create fantastic potted meat to enjoy with small leaves, chutney and some crusty fresh bread.

Pulled Pork Recipe serves: 4-6

Ingredients:

1-1.5kg shoulder of pork joint 3 large garlic cloves – unpeeled 700ml water 4 big sprigs of fresh sage 1 chicken stock cube salt & pepper

For the sauce::

3 tablespoons wine or sherry vinegar 3 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 large garlic clove – peeled and finely grated 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

18

chopped Pinch chilli flakes (optional) oven temperature: 200C/400F reducing to 140C/280F

Method:

■ Put the pork into an

oven proof dish slightly bigger than the joint and cook uncovered at 200C/400F for 30 minutes. ■ Meanwhile heat the water, stock cube and garlic cloves in a saucepan. ■ Pour the hot liquid over the pork, push the sage leaves into the liquid and then wrap the whole dish in 3 layers of foil so no liquid can escape. ■ Return the dish to the oven and turn the heat down to 140C and leave in the oven for 5 hours. ■ Remove the dish from the oven and pour the

liquid in to a saucepan, adding the fennel seeds, soy sauce, sugar, vinegar the raw garlic, the cooked garlic popping it out of the skin as you do. ■ Allow the liquid to boil furiously until you have approximately 150-200ml left. By this stage it will be syrupy. ■ While the sauce is boiling crank the oven heat back up and return the joint to the oven uncovered and allow any crackling (if the joint has it) to crisp up. ■ serve the meat as a joint and simply pull apart with forks to serve it and drizzle with the sticky sauce. ■ try adding the zest and juice of a fresh lemon to the sauce and some extra chilli for a summer tang!

verybody loves a good BBQ and al fresco dining, but if you’re bored with the usual burnt burgers and undercooked chicken, you should definitely give fish a go. Allow the fish to steam in the parcel for about 25 minutes at 1800C. Ensure you lower the temperature on the BBQ as this causes the fish to steam gently, while alleviating the inconvenience of having to scrape it off the grill or the fish completely falling apart. I recommend gilt-head bream as it is a fantastic fish. sea bass or grey mullet would work well too. A crisp and clean sauvignon Blanc works well here. rainbow trout and mackerel are best. strong flavours such as horseradish or a good quality curry paste rubbed into the flesh is delicious and helps to cut through the oiliness of the fish. White wine or rosé with a nice balance acidity is perfect for oily fish! When cooking fish fillets, brush with some extra virgin olive oil, season and place directly on the BBQ. Lay skin side down for about seven minutes. It’s as simple as that! Fish steaks such as tuna and swordfish can be cooked in a similar manner to fish fillets. I recommend that you enquire about the provenance of the fish and the method of catch. For example always look for yellowfin or albacore tuna and ensure that it is line and pole caught. Your local fishmonger should be able to provide this information. A slightly chilled fruity Pinot noir goes really well with marinated tuna steaks. of course, there are many more recipes and fish to choose from and these are

Finally I would encourage you to go shopping with an open mind and then choose a recipe to enhance the fish. Happy barbecuing everybody and here’s hoping for a great summer!

After many years of baking at home, Kerry and Kate launched the Vintage House Bakery in 2009. The bakery has gone from strength to strength and last month saw them open brand new premises on Francis street in stoneygate. The Vintage House Bakery has a wonderful homely feel and the delicious aroma of freshly baked cakes and vibrant chatter means the bakery is quickly becoming a firm favourite with people from both near and far. With a strong focus on offering a bespoke service, it’s clear that attention to

detail and always striving for perfection is what sets them apart from their competitors. This is perhaps the reason why in recent months they have been lucky enough to work with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Katy Perry to name but a few. on their relocation to stoneygate, Kerry and Kate said, “It’s a very exciting time for us both. By JILL DAWSON IS PuBLISHED IN PAPERBACK By HODDER & STOuGHTON, £8.99. hey say crime’s a man’s business. Who was that small figure then, slender enough to trot along the moonlit track, swift and low, virtually invisible? Who was it that covered the green signal with a glove to stop the train, while the two others took care of the driver and his mate? Could it have been one Queenie Dove, survivor of the Depression and the Blitz, not to mention any number of scrapes with the law? Queenie Dove is a self-proclaimed genius when it comes to thieving and escape. Daring, clever and sexy, she ducked and dived through the streets of London, graduating from childhood shop-lifting to more glamorous crimes in the post-war decades. Here she tells a vivacious tale of trickery and adventure, but one with more pain and heartbreak than its heroine cares to admit.

Flavia de Luce’s expertise lies mainly in the field of chemistry, following her obsessive experimenting in the old laboratory at the crumbling family home, Buckshaw. Her powers of deduction in crime-solving often put her one step ahead of the local constabulary in a distinctly ‘Holmesian’ manner. Bradley’s latest and fourth offering sees Colonel de Luce renting Buckshaw to a film company for a location shooting due to the family’s ever-diminishing coffers. naturally enough, director, crew and stars do nothing to endear themselves to the household until the actors are talked into staging a benefit performance in the parish hall. K

nown for their gentle, bilingual pop songs, Bristolbased François & The Atlas Mountains’ newest single City Kiss is an ethereal mix of love and desire played out against an up-beat, repetitious accompaniment of guitars, bass, trumpet, and drums. such a pictureperfect ‘pop’ combination like this could easily become clichéd or over-affected with Fránçois’ bilingualism becoming little more than a gimmick, but luckily this is not the case. The song is surrounded by the intoxicating feelings of a ‘first, and only, love’ and it is through this that the band’s gentle, jangling sound finds itself amongst the airy idealism from which it is based. B-side Young Darling is equally gentle but the mood is overwhelmingly different, housing a deeper sense of melancholy that defies the joyousness of the

Grounding the song within its relaxed beat, Young Darling delves deeper into the band’s sound, finding a more graspable and believable context. oddly restrained and down to earth, Young Darling, is perhaps the stronger song, being in itself more believable and comforting than the ‘head-in-the-clouds’ perfectionism of City Kiss. he Hackney-born songstress is never happier than when playing in the great outdoors, which is why since her emergence in 2008 Faith has become a huge hit on the ever burgeoning boutique festival circuit. And this summer promises to offer up more of the same. Equally comfortable playing at the mainstream

pop V festival as the more obscure Cheltenham Jazz festival, Faith has become a festival booker’s dream with her easy charm and melodic soul flavoured pop a sure fire winner with festival crowds. when Faith headlines the Thursday night at this summer’s bash. “I just love playing festivals,” Faith says in her usual chipper manner. “I’m in my element! Everybody is there to have a cool time, so I try to make sure my set matches that vibe. And if the people in the crowd are having fun, then so am I, come rain or shine... in fact, sometimes rain at festivals is the best thing in the world, the coolest and most uplifting platform on which to play or listen to music.”

Faith loves the festival environment so much, in fact, that she already predicts it’s what she’ll be doing in 50 years time. “I think it’s what I’m always going to be doing, I hope so anyway. Either that or

30

I’ll be in Las Vegas, a loopy old lady with a residency at some dodgy cabaret bar. I can see it now: old men will be leering at me; young kids will be having a laugh at me. I’ll be this fat oldie in a leopard skin. It sounds great, doesn’t it?!” The festival spirit certainly suits Faith’s persona. The 26-year-old has probably been called ‘quirky’ more times than she cares to remember, but in every stereotype there is a certain element of truth, and Faith has now been pegged as the kooky singer-songwriter as famous for her dress sense and eccentricities as she is for her music. But that is to do her music a disservice. Faith’s sense of style means her reputation as an end-of-the-pier, ‘fun for all the family’ act is secure, but her two albums have won many genuine

plaudits. The first, 2009’s ‘Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful’, was a top 10 hit, and her forthcoming follow-up ‘Fall to Grace’ is already gaining positive reviews. And that’s a relief for Faith: “I’ll have to have a think about my life if it doesn’t do so well,” she says with a nervous laugh. Three years between albums is quite a gap for an artist in these ‘want everything now’ times, especially for one with designs of chart success, but Faith defends the time taken between records. “You can’t just vomit an album out,” she says, “and I’m surprised people think you can. If I’d taken only a few months and it was no good, people would have a go at me for being too quick. For me, it’s took the right amount of time. I’m very happy

with it.” Former Madonna cohort Nellee Hooper has worked with Faith on much of ‘Fall to Grace’. “We got on so well; we had an almost psychic understanding. Even though I tried to pretend I didn’t know who he was at first! I thought we should start off as equals. Obviously he knew what I was doing! But he was fine about it and we worked really well. I hope it is a success.” With that success sure to follow, Faith is now left to fulfil the last of her longstanding ambitions. Her first, to appear of BBC2’s flagship music show ‘Later... with Jools Holland’ has been achieved (she has something of a regular on the show over the last three years). The second? To buy a one bedroom flat in Notting Hill. “I’m happy in Dalston, north-east London, but the place I’m in isn’t for sale. So once I get back from my tour I am going to find a place in Notting Hill. That has always been my ambition. I might feel like I’ve made it once I’ve done that.”

The use of lighting can be split up into four different categories - general, task, decorative/mood and accent lighting. General lighting gives a wash of illumination over all surfaces. These are your spot lights or hanging ceiling bulbs. Task lighting is more specific, directed light, predominantly used in the kitchen to illuminate the work surface, cooker and sink. ellers, get ready to get moving when the sun comes out! It may not have felt like summer with the wet weather we have experienced recently but the holiday months are approaching and traditionally this is an active period for property sales. sellers, get ready to get moving when the sun comes out! There has always been a strong link between sunlight and property sales. First of all, we want to photograph your property on a sunny day to show it off in the best possible light and with a vibrant, colourful garden. Then, when the sun is out, prospective purchasers come out. Longer and warmer evenings encourage people to view properties and take

a more positive look on a move to their dream home. Properties will generally look their best with the summer sun on them so make the most of the lightest assets; keep the garden neat, tidy and inviting, and enhance the appearance of the best lit rooms. A summer evening can also create an enviable relaxed environment, perfect for that crucial viewing. Recent figures from the Halifax and Royal Institution of Chartered surveyors suggest house prices and market activity have fallen recently. But on closer inspection, this is linked to the end of the first time buyer’s stamp duty holiday and lender’s mortgage rate adjustments. It goes to prove how important the stamp duty thresholds

are in driving purchaser’s decisions and it is clear to see that the hot spots for house buying levels surround the stamp duty price points at £125,000, £250,000, £500,000 and £1m. Enquiries are very strong at present at all these levels and particularly at around £250,000. Families are the most active purchasing group as they consider moves this summer allowing time to settle in before the new school year begins again in september. The popular Leicester suburbs around the Universities and Hospitals always draw new buyers at this time of year as placement and work rotations lead the demand for accommodation. In Market Harborough we see a rise in demand for

commuters wishing to settle in at convenient and picturesque locations whilst being close to the train station for mainline rail links.

Investors are also busy at present and this is essential for generating sales, creating much needed new private rental accommodation at the bottom of the market and freeing up moves higher up chains. For these reasons the months ahead are a busy time for us all to look forward to. And if the sun shines then you can be sure that Leicestershire’s leafy suburbs and finest rolling countryside will attract interest in the summer housing market.

t the time of writing we were still under deluge. The wettest April on record, had soaked into a soggy May. And still there were drought warnings! Fickle English weather eh? Yet despite our love of complaining about the weather, we Brits are masters of taking advantage of even the most fleeting sunshine. Just visit a city park on a sunny lunch time or any English beach at half-term to witness the mass removal of cardigans. now we’re taking that same “make the most of it” approach into our homes.

With an abundance of large windows between brick columns and a roof lantern housed in a covered ceiling, an orangery not only offers greater privacy than a conservatory but the extra wall space means it is extremely versatile, lending itself to the creation of anything from an airy kitchen to an inspiring home office.

If you haven’t already started, now is the perfect time to get those seeds planted. Whether it’s bedding plants or vegetables, it needn’t cost the earth. Collect toilet roll tubes, fill with compost and stand in a seed tray. They’re just as good as pots and bio-degradable too. If you were organised and sowed early, why not spend a couple of days in the shed or greenhouse pricking your seedlings out into pots, to give them a head start. There’s something quite relaxing about working in the greenhouse with a nice cuppa.

When its rain a-plenty, why not make the most of it by collecting it in water butts. These days they don’t have to be the unsightly black tub hidden in the corner of the garden. There are many to choose from including wooden barrels, terracotta clay effect and even wall-mounted space-saver ones for those with smaller gardens. There’s something to suit all tastes. Rainbows Awarded Silver Medal For Their Garden At Chelsea Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in Loughborough is celebrating after being awarded a silver medal for its garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. The judges commented that they particularly liked the design and the excellent use of space. Garden designer, Chris Gutteridge of Second Nature in Leicester, commented: “We’re all absolutely over the moon that the Rainbows garden won a medal at the show. The reception from everyone who comes to see it has been extremely positive, even the Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers told me it was one of the best gardens in the show.” The garden, officially titled ‘Rainbows Children’s Hospice Garden’, will be recreated at the East Midlands’ hospice. Director of Care Alison Cooke said: “Obviously we’re all very excited. The attention that Rainbows is getting for the garden project is wonderful. Most importantly for me, the garden will offer a long term benefit for everyone at the hospice. It will be a quiet and tranquil place for contemplation and reflection on our daily challenges. It will also give some parents a quiet space to remember a child in happier times.” Once relocated to Rainbows, the garden will be available for the public to see during the hospice’s annual open day on 15th September. More details about the garden are available on the charity’s website www.rainbows.co.uk/chelsea.

Sporting Legends Raise Money for Local Charity RSM Tenon, one of the UK’s most progressive and exciting accountancy firms invited footballing legend Alan McInally and former England Rugby star John Bentley to join them for their extremely popular and challenging annual golf day at Rushcliffe Golf Club in East Leake. The event helped to raise money for Loughboroughbased charity Rainbows by way of a longest putt contest. Chris Woods won the bottle of champagne with an incredible putt measuring 58ft 5inch, helping to raise £590 for Rainbows. All the winners of the day’s various competitions were awarded their prizes in the evening at the golf club enjoying fine food and great entertainment. Four times England international John Bentley hosted the evening, telling interesting tales of his time with England back in the amateur era of Rugby Union and touring with the British and Irish Lions. Former professional footballer and Sky Sports analyst Alan McInally also joined John later in the evening for a question and answer session. Alan praised the spirit and theme of the day, “It was great to see so many people come together, not only to enjoy a great day of golf, but to help support such an inspirational charity.” Chris Darlington, Director for RSM Tenon, was delighted with the day, “I am pleased to say the event was a great success. We had a fantastic day at the beautiful Rushcliffe Golf Club and I am thrilled that we managed to raise such a substantial amount of money for this incredibly worthy cause.”

Carry On Glamping

Whilst for many, the lure of camping provides an opportunity to get back to nature and sleep under the stars.

F

or others the lack of creature comforts, and let’s face it the British weather is enough to send them screaming to the nearest hotel. But camping needn’t be quite so drastic or indeed under canvas. Glamping (glamorous + camping) originated in the early 1900’s, with the popularisation of safaris. Wealthy European and American travellers, not eager to part with the comforts of home, stayed instead in luxurious canvas

tents, furnished with beds, Persian rugs, antiques and fully staffed with chefs, guides, and butlers. Later a new trend of glamping emerged with luxury camping resorts, ecoresorts and campgrounds offering every amenity imaginable, from 5-star dining to spas. These days regardless of budget, you can enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury. These are just a few of our favourites.

The tents offer a roomy living area, a wood-burning stove with oven, Belfast sinks with hot and cold running water and real beds. With summer on the doorstep, the holiday season is not far away, so if your relationship is in trouble it could really pay to take specialist advice as soon as you possibly can. In the meantime, below are a few simple steps you could bear in mind if you want to get over the hurdle of divorce as painlessly as possible.

step 1: AVoID unnECESSARy ConFLICt If you want a quick divorce, you will need to state in your divorce petition a spouse’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour as the circumstances for the

48

proceedings are private, your spouse will see the petition, so to avoid unnecessary conflict, it’s best to keep your petition as brief and to the point as possible. The alternative option is to live apart for two years and then file for divorce.

step 2: ContRoL youR CoStS There is one thing that is well worth remembering – arguing costs money! If you and your partner fail to agree independently, then your solicitor’s bills will increase in proportion to

the amount of time it takes to sort things out. Recent research shows that some couples now squabble about who gets to keep the Airmiles or loyalty points, but remember you are eroding your settlement with each new argument.

The Court will always put the best interests of your children first when making decisions. Make sure you do too – don’t use them as weapons in a battle with your soon to be ‘ex’ as this can cause untold damage to future relationships as well as the children themselves.

step 4: GEt HELP Family and friends can provide invaluable help, during a difficult time. Make sure you take advantage of the help on offer, for yourself as well as your children if you have them.
