At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.

“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.” an This revolution, in bringing together eye for both design and production, secured Rhodes’ assimilation into the fashion world. Have a

GOOD HAIR DAY

1

Add a sweeping fringe to longer hair styles to frame the face. This will enhance your cheekbones for an overall slimmer look.

10

A chignon or bun will accentuate your eyes, drawing attention away from any problem areas. Lily Collins rocks the retro vibe.

2

For women of a certain age, long hair can still be youthful if you add soft layers in the front to open up your face and create a more modern style.

3

A centre-parting can make you look severe. Opt for a zigzag side-parting to create a younger, effortless look with the added bonus of hiding greys and roots.

4

Don’t hide under long hair it can make you look older and heavier. If you get the right proportions your hair can work to streamline your body.

5

If you have a round face and soft features, choose a pixie cut. Adding height to the style will also help to elongate your face. We love Ginnifer Goodwin’s elfin crop.

Feeling attractive and confident? Chances are, you’re having a good hair day. And with new research showing that GHDs raise our self-esteem, we reveal the 10 best styles for a slimmer, younger, happier looking you!

6

As you get older avoid heavy blocks of colour. Instead opt for tone-on-tone colour or balayage highlights applied freehand. Step forward Jennifer Aniston.

7

The classic bob gives the face an instant lift creating the illusion of lifted cheekbones and a higher jaw. A great choice if your face is showing the effects of gravity.

8

Glossy hair is a symbol of youth and vitality so get your shine on with products that nourish your hair and restore sheen.

9

Jaw length cuts can make a square face look wider, so add movement with layers and a side parting. Perfect for new mum Olivia Wilde.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

INSTASMILES Have you ever tried to feel happy without smiling? It’s almost impossible. We humans are programmed to smile when we’re happy. It works the other way round too. Try it: however you feel right now, break out a massive smile. Dr Alif Moosajee, dental surgeon at Oakdale Dental, guarantees you’ll feel better, but understands why you might hide your smile. If you don’t like your teeth, you might not feel confident enough to beam at the world. And in the era of social media and the selfie, you definitely won’t want to smile for the camera. This is allegedly why Victoria Beckham always looks so glum in photos, though she’s said to have a wicked sense of humour in person. So a frown really can bring you down, but the latest dental techniques are designed to put the smile back on your face. Here’s how dentists overcome the four most common reasons for hiding your smile.

Crooked teeth

If you have too many teeth for the space in your mouth, they might twist round and bunch up to fit in. One of the most popular ways to straighten teeth is with a discreet, clear brace called Invisalign. You wear clear plastic trays (aligners) day and night, removing them for eating and cleaning. The aligners exert gradual pressure and your dentist will change them every two weeks, as your teeth move towards their new positions, until you achieve a beautifully straight smile.

Long Tall Sally

Odd shapes and sizes

Perhaps your teeth appear too long or too square or oddly proportioned relative to their neighbours. Enter veneers, which, like a long skirt, cover a multitude of shins! These thin porcelain restorations are securely bonded to your teeth, giving the outward appearance of beautifully shaped and evenly sized teeth. They can also be made whiter so your smile looks brighter too.

Discolouration

If your teeth look good aside from being dark, a range of teeth whitening techniques is now available to suit your lifestyle and budget. For the most predictable outcome, your dentist will make trays that fit closely around your teeth. You fill the trays with a special whitening gel and wear them as prescribed for two weeks. Stains, both on the surface and held more deeply within the structure of your teeth, are released to leave you with a whiter smile.

“The latest de n techniques aretal designed to p the smile bacut k on your face”

Missing teeth

If gaps are visible when you smile, your dentist might recommend a denture, the removable plate that we traditionally associate with false teeth; a bridge which uses teeth on either side of a gap to hold your new fixed false tooth; or an implant which comprises a false root which forms a stable platform on which to fix a self-supporting false tooth or teeth. And you’ll go from gappy to happy! So if you’re missing out on happiness just because you don’t like the way your teeth look, talk to your dentist to explore your options to smile yourself happy.

GOOD MOOD

You’ve heard the saying “You are what you eat” but did you know you really can eat yourself happy? If you’re feeling low, Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts recommends you avoid traditional comfort food and reach instead for healthier fare packed with feelgood vitamins and minerals to improve your mood. Complex Carbohydrates perform a number of roles in keeping our mood elevated. The brain is almost solely dependant on glucose for energy but cannot store it, so a constant supply of glucose is needed for healthy brain function and stable mood. Studies have shown a link between mood and blood sugar. The more uneven your blood sugar supply the more uneven the mood. Source: wholewheat, vegetables, oats Omega 3s are essential fats that cannot be made by the body so need to be consumed through food. A diet high in Omega 3s will keep your brain healthy and improve mood by keeping the brain cells flexible aiding the flow of hormones and other chemical messengers, which may affect our mood. Source: salmon, tuna, sardines, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, oils B Vitamins have been shown to increase energy, reduce stress and improve moods. Important B vitamins include:

B6 (Pyridoxine) aids with the production of serotonin and regulating moods. It’s also said to be effective in treating PMS. Source: chicken, tuna, salmon, lentils, sunflower seeds, cheese, brown rice

B9 (Folate) helps the body create new cells as well as support serotonin (the feel good hormone) regulation. It’s often used in conjunction with B12 to treat depression and is thought to boost the efficiency of antidepressants. Source: leafy greens, beets, salmon B12 (Cobalamin) works with vitamin B9 to produce red blood cells and help iron do its job. Low levels can cause fatigue and depression. Iron has several roles including helping to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. A deficiency in iron can lead to tiredness and mood change. Source: dark green leafy vegetables, meat, liver, beans, whole-grains

Vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin” best obtained through exposure to sunlight but can also be increased through diet. Studies have shown low levels of vitamin D can trigger depressive symptoms which is why we experience increased low moods during the winter. Source: salmon, eggs, fortified milk

Magnesium helps to maintain and protect our body’s health and aids in the production of serotonin. It is often used in homeopathic remedies for balancing moods. Source: dark leafy green vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains

Chromium is important for enhancing insulin activity, keeping blood sugar levels stable and helping to balance mood. We Say

TE-MAH-TOH Packed with Vitamin C, crank up your cheer-ometer with these fatigue fighting, stress busting tomato recipes from Waitrose.

SARDINE, BLACK OLIVE & CHERRY TOMATO PASTA Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 8 minutes Serves: 2

Ingredients: 1 small red onion, finely sliced 150g Farfalle dried pasta ½ x 270g pack cherry vine tomatoes, halved 50g whole black natural olives 120g can Waitrose Sardine Piccanti Juice of ½ lemon 20g pack flat-leaf parsley, chopped

Sardines are a great source of Vitamin D, the ‘sunshine’ vitamin!

1

Cook the pasta in boiling water for 8 minutes until tender. Meanwhile, place the onion, tomatoes and olives in a bowl. In a separate bowl, drain the oil from the sardines and whisk with the lemon juice to make a dressing.

2

Break the sardines into pieces and add to the tomato mixture along with the drained pasta. Pour the dressing over and stir through the salad, adding in the parsley. Serve immediately. If you don’t like sardines, tuna is a great alternative.

WINING & DINING

ROASTEDTOMATO TART Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 25 - 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: ½ x 500g pack frozen Jus-Rol All Butter Puff Pastry, defrosted 2 tbsp Tomato Pesto 2 x 100g packs Sussex Slipcote Sheep’s Milk Cheese, sliced 3 English tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, roughly chopped ½ x 55g bag organic rocket

1

Preheat the oven to 200˚C. Roll out the pastry to a 22cm x 30cm oblong and place on a large, greased baking sheet. Lightly score a line about 2cm in from the edge of the pastry. This will form a lip around the tart as the pastry is cooking.

2

Spread the pesto evenly over the inner square of the pastry. Place the cheese slices (a firm goat’s cheese or mozzarella, would also work well) on top, then add the tomato slices in an even layer. Scatter with the thyme, and season with freshly ground black pepper.

3

Place in the oven and cook for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is well risen, golden and cooked underneath. Pile the rocket onto the tart. Serve immediately with a salad of lightly cooked asparagus tips, green beans and baby spinach leaves, dressed with a little balsamic vinegar and topped with Parmigiano Reggiano shavings. Love & Mercy

(12A) 2hr 1 min Opens Fri 10 Jul at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk Spread across two important decades in the life of Beach Boys musician and songwriter Brian Wilson, director Bill Pohlad’s second feature film shifts between Wilson’s peak creativity during his 60’s hey-days creating Pet Sounds, and a listless existence in the 1980s under the corrupting influence of controversial psychotherapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). When Wilson meets Cadillac saleswoman Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) in the mid 80s, she offers the troubled genius an escape from Landy and a chance at peace. showcase the two different periods was a bold decision, but thanks to sublime performances from both men it pays off. Dano captures the manic nature of a young man obsessed with translating the songs he can hear in his head onto record; and the joyful chaos of his recording studio sessions is broken up with a sincere and heartbreaking piano version of God Only Knows that’s guaranteed to

raise goose bumps. It’s also great to see Cusack back in fine form after his CV has included a few too many straight-to-DVD movies recently. His inherent laconic charm gives Wilson believability, offering glimpses of a charismatic and soulful man trapped behind Landy’s control and wall of medication. Giamatti and Banks are excellent as they both normally are, and the incredible music means you’ll be downloading / digging around for your Beach Boy vinyl as soon as you get home.

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

Award-winning author Gretchen Rubin is back with a bang, with The Happiness Project. The author of the bestselling 40 Ways to Look at Winston Churchill has produced a work that is “a cross between the Dalai Lama’s The Art of Happiness and Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love” (Sonya Lyubomirsky). In the vein of Julie and Julia, The Happiness Project describes one person’s year-long attempt to discover what leads to true contentment. Drawing on cutting-edge science, classical philosophy, and real-world applicability, Rubin has written an engaging, eminently relatable chronicle of transformation.

Hector and the Search for Happiness by François Lelord

Can we learn how to be happy? Hector is a successful young psychiatrist. He’s very good at treating patients in real need of his help. But many people he sees have no health problems: they’re just deeply dissatisfied with their lives. Hector can’t do much for them, and it’s beginning to depress him. So when a patient tells him he looks in need of a holiday, Hector decides to set off round the world to find out what makes people everywhere happy (and sad), and whether there is such a thing as the secret of true happiness. Now a major motion picture starring Simon Pegg and Rosamund Pike.

Happily

r e t f A r Eve

A certain Mr Clooney has rarely been seen without a smile since tying the knot with human rights lawyer Amal Amaluddin last September. The man once known as America’s national flirt says he “couldn’t be happier.”

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

At 54 years old, George Clooney very much sounds like a young man in love. “I knew when I first met Amal that she was an exceptionally intelligent and sensitive woman and it didn't take long before I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” he says. It’s a big statement from the long-time bachelor, who after divorcing in 1993 long maintained he would never get married again. But Clooney is now just months from celebrating his first anniversary, declaring, “My world has gone from cloudy to sunny thanks to being with Amal… she’s an extraordinary woman.” Sharing his life with a human rights lawyer has brought Clooney fulfilment on more than one level. Actress Tilda Swinton once remarked that for Clooney, fame is a vocation; now, as the new power couple on the block, the Clooneys are using their press momentum to raise awareness about humanitarian crises across the world. The actor has previously spent time on the ground in Africa, drawing attention to human suffering and how it can be alleviated. “I'm not really cynical in my personal outlook on things, even though in my own work producing or directing films I've tended to be pretty cynical,” the actor and philanthropist says. “I grew up as the son of a newsman [Nick Clooney] and I'm used to watching the news and getting a daily dose of tragedy and if you spend enough time watching or reading the news you have the feeling that you're doomed and we're all going to die. But it's not inevitable that our world is going to become a very dark place. I loved being part of a project where you try to show that we can bring about incredible changes. I really believe that.” The couple are seeking to instigate change, and Clooney has continually credited the important work his wife does – “My wife has a much more intense agenda than mine. She is constantly dealing with issues and causes that affect the lives of people and can have fatal consequences for them. She's very effective at what she does and she is used to being under heavy pressure, much more than I've ever faced. I've always had the highest admiration for her.” The husband and wife duo are

keen to share each other’s successes, and such sentiment also found its way into comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Phoehler’s witty Golden Globes 2015 introduction speech: “George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year.” They quipped. “Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an

So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.” Clooney, ever the joker himself, took their jibing statements in his stride.

we're both on the road. It can actually be pretty interesting to work out where we can meet each other halfway between wherever we happen to be.” Both spouses lead busy lives; Clooney has been working on his latest film, Tomorrowland, a futuristic action film where he plays disillusioned inventor Frank Walker, a former boy genius who finds himself on a quest to help save the Earth from catastrophe. He reveals it was time take on an inspirational storyline. “In the past, we had a much greater sense of optimism and belief in our capacity to change the world and make it a better place… I hope that message resonates with people who see the film.” He’s a man who has certainly made many women – and men – happy during his years on screens big and small, and is now looking to inspire both in front of the camera and through work with those in need. Happily married, it appears that the quintessentially ‘Clooney’ combination of charm, grace and humanitarian spirit prevails.

He and Amal also find the time to enjoy life alongside their charitable endeavours. “I've never felt so good in my life as I do now. I have a great woman by my side who is smart and funny and outdoes me at almost every level. We're having so much fun together. It's great!” They’ve been jetting around the world visiting cities such as Shanghai and Tokyo, while also renovating their Grade II-listed manor house in Berkshire. “Marriage takes a little work but we've made a deal that we will try to never spend more than a week apart,” Clooney says. “We compare our schedules and figure out the best ways to meet up if URBAN FOX JULY 2015 35

HOMES & GARDENS

Happiness is ... Feng shui is the ancient Chinese belief that the way that you arrange your home can affect your success, health and happiness. Zoe Hubbard, Designer at Maison Interiors, explains the principles of capturing positive chi, or energy, to increase your sense of vitality and joy. Interiors Images: Maison

Five Simple Steps to Feng Shui Outside In

Make an Entrance Your front door is your face to the world and how people, energy and opportunities reach you. Clearly name or number your door so you can be found and make sure your doormat is clean, then use beautiful accessories such as an outdoor mirror, sculpture or water fountain to enhance the approach to your property. Don’t overdo it though, or you could prevent positive energy from entering your home.

Indoor plants are an important feng shui tool to activate positive energy and purify the air. Introduce a new plant into your home at the beginning of a new month or New Year, when it symbolises a healthy beginning for you and your family. Consider bamboo, a money tree plant or peace lily to compliment your decor or hopes for the future.

Eliminate Clutter

A feng shui aquarium is a powerful way to draw auspicious chi into your living space. Water symbolises the flow of life, of growth and the activities of living things. The motion and sound of bubbling water increases positive energy to bring good fortune, wealth and abundance. A properly positioned and cared for aquarium offers a perfect combination of harmony and balance. Or you could start by simply introducing a fish theme into your bathroom with aquatic tiles, prints or accessories.

Too much clutter can attract or trap negative energy, so start by clearing the spaces where you spend the most time – bedroom, bathroom, living room – as these have the most impact on your energy. Get rid of things you don’t like, including unwanted gifts and reminders of past failures, as well as anything broken which is unlikely to ever be fixed. The results of this rebalanced rt olour Cha energy might be seen in improved Feng Shi C productivity and positive gth experiences and interactions with Fire: stren others.

Colour Therapy Colour is one of the easiest ways to shift the energy in your home to create good feng shui. Yellow, a colour connected to happiness, might look great on you but can be depressing in your home. Avoid yellow in your bedroom as it is too harsh on the eyes. Instead look to the 5 elements or energies of Chinese astrology for your interior inspiration.

And

Relax...

Spa style luxury is coming home, as more of us seek to make our bathrooms a sanctuary of wellbeing, not just a place to wash. Here are 15 ideas for creating the perfect ‘spathroom’ experience.

1

If your main bathroom is located next to your bedroom and you have separate facilities for other family members, consider knocking through to create a boutique hotel style master suite.

2

Size is important when it comes to the tub. You’re never going to feel relaxed crammed into the bath equivalent of a sardine tin. If space isn’t an issue opt for a deep, standalone tub.

an effective and low cost way to create mood lighting.

8

Whether your preference is for wall mounted or moveable units – ensure clutter is tidied away - opt for natural materials such as a wood or for a more contemporary look, a high gloss finish will reflect light around the bathroom.

3

9

4

10

For the ultimate spa-style compliment your tub with freestanding bath taps with open-spout design to create a stunning visual and audio waterfall effect.

Upgrade to a whirlpool bath and enjoy a soothing massage, or go all out with a ‘floatation’ tub and experience that wonderful feeling of weightlessness and complete relaxation.

If your bathroom is large enough incorporate soft furnishings such as an armchair or sofa. Perfect for relaxing and reading this month’s Urban Fox in between a steam and sauna. The floor will get wet, so opt for water resistant, easy-to-clean tiles such as slate or stone. For the walls tile choices are endless; from glass, frosted and tumbled, to iridescent and pearl. Choose natural tones to soothe and relax.

5

If you prefer a shower, a rainforest shower is essential. For something extra special opt for a steam shower. The heat and humidity will relax your muscles and melt all your worries away.

Accessorise your spathroom with natural materials such as stone and wood, or alternatively create a lavish environment with ornate and decorative touches in lightreflective metallic.

12

Pamper yourself with oils, masks, scrubs and butters. Destination spas including Ragdale Hall and Champneys have created their own ‘at home’ ranges; but for pure indulgence ESPA gets the thumbs up.

13

Using a diffuser, candle or room mist, select a fragrance which reflects the mood you want to achieve. Ritual’s Hammam Secret home fragrance combines Eucalyptus and Rosemary for a refreshing, energising lift.

14

Music and white noise – raindrops, whale sounds - can help to create a relaxing sensory experience. Luxury showers and baths may contain inbuilt music modules or alternatively look for systems suitable for bathroom installation.

6

To achieve a sense of peace and calm in your spathroom consider installing a sauna. Both individual and couple options are available, as are transparent glass designs for that feeling of open plan spaciousness.

15

Finally don’t forget the white fluffy towels and robes. It just wouldn’t be a spathroom without them!

7

Lighting is vital in achieving the perfect spa vibe. Use subtle feature lighting on mirrors, in recesses, behind panels or in the floor. Candles are

heart is WHERE THE

You’ve waved off the removal men and unpacked the final box but somehow your dream house still doesn’t feel quite like home. Mark Sandall, Joint Managing Director of property specialists Andrew Granger & Co knows a thing or two about how to really make a place your own. Here are his top tips.

Become a local. You probably did your research before you made your offer but after you move in, get to know the neighbourhood by exploring nearby shops, restaurants, pubs and amenities on foot. Stay in more. It’s not unusual, especially if there’s lots of work needed, to pine for your old home rather than get familiar with your new one. It might sound obvious but the more time you actually spend there, the more you’ll grow to love it. Which brings me to my next tip ...

Don’t rush into renovations. If you’re thinking about extending, restructuring or even just decorating, take some time to understand how the space works now and how it will work best for you, to avoid costly mistakes.

Make yourself a haven. Dedicate a room or area in the house to unwind, even while you’re decorating everywhere else. At the end of a stressful day at the office or an exhausting one up a ladder with paint brush in hand, you’ll be so pleased you created a home within your home where you can switch off and just relax in comfort. Meet the neighbours. Pop round and introduce yourself, maybe ask about a good local takeaway until you’ve got the kitchen straight. Then if you need someone to feed the cat while you take a weekend break, at least you’ll know their names. It might be the start of a beautiful friendship, especially if you invite them when you ... Throw a welcome party! Nothing warms a new house more than the laughter of friends and family. So share your new

home with the people you love. Perhaps hold a house-warming BBQ. Even if you’re indoors, keep it informal, the last thing you need is more stress. When you’ve cleared up after the final guest has departed, I guarantee your house will feel more your own than before the first one arrived. Make memories. From your housewarming party onwards, what really makes a house your home is the memories you make there. So invite your closest friends round for a dinner party in your newly acquired dining room; invite the family over for your first Christmas there; mark your children’s growth on their bedroom door frames each year; these memories quickly turn a house into the home where your heart is. Tips from the

HOMES & GARDENS

POTTING SHED A little gardening know-how from Anna Barker at Lush Garden Design

My garden is looking a bit tired already and it’s only July. What can I do? People quite often say to me that their garden is lovely and bright in spring but afterwards there’s very little colour. It’s easy to get inspired in the spring with all the new growth and bulbs coming up but after this first flush your garden can have a little lull. If this happens, go shopping for perennials in flower now to fill the gaps in your borders. Once planted they will flower at this time every year. You can also look for plants that will flower for a long period or repeatedly during early to midsummer – for example Roses, Potentilla, Penstemons, Lupins and Clematis. You can encourage longer flowering by dead-heading throughout the summer, and while most people associate bulbs with spring, there are summer flowering bulbs such as Lillies and Zantedeschia, as well as

colourful foliage plants such as Heuchera (in red, purple, yellow, green or silver), Hosta (single colour or variegated in yellow, green or blue) and Phormiums (striped leaves in orange, red, yellow, green or purple). Summer bedding is great for this time of year, but it is high maintenance. Watering and dead-heading is needed every day to get the best out of a display. Give your plants a feed, and water regularly if it doesn’t rain. This will encourage your garden to provide plenty of colour all summer long.

I love gardening - it makes me really happy. How can I turn it into a full-time career? I know exactly what you mean! Gardening is a physical activity that gets you outside in the fresh air, so it’s not surprising it makes us feel happy. For people stuck inside in an office or at home all day, the lure of working outdoors can be a tempting one. Opportunities in horticulture are many and varied, including gardening and garden maintenance, parks and estate management, sports field and lawn care, as well as working in garden centres and nurseries, and in garden design. Start by reading all you can about the areas of horticulture you are most interested in and then

think about getting qualified. The Royal Horticultural Society runs online courses and there are colleges that specialise in land-based studies and run part-time courses that you could attend. A business development module will also be helpful if you are seriously considering setting up on your own. There is a shortage of good gardeners and there are lots of gardens out there that need caring for; so if you know your subject and market yourself well, you can grow a successful business. Good luck! URBAN FOX JULY 2015 59

LIFE & WORK

Random acts of

HAPPINESS So Switzerland, one of the world’s richest countries, is also the happiest. Austerity Britain ranked a less joyful 21st in the World Happiness Report. If, like us, you can’t afford a second home in Zurich (though if you can, see page 65), the good news is you don’t need riches to join the happiness movement.

We’re constantly told that our busy lives and addiction to mobile devices is increasing our sense of social isolation. For years, special interest groups around the world have been quietly working to re-connect people locally and create happier communities. Now those groups are coalescing into a bone fide movement validated by academic research which proves that we are happier ourselves when we make other people happy. What comes around goes around The idea has some unlikely exponents: in 2001, Yes Man author Danny Wallace placed a small ad saying simply “Join Me”. The response to this mysterious, and initially meaningless, overture revealed a widespread yearning for something more to life. Having accidentally started a cult, this turned into a force for good when Danny’s unexpected acolytes met and collectively agreed their mission: to commit Random Acts of Kindness and spread a little happiness every Friday. OK so their first act was to buy a packet of peanuts for the old chap supping stout in the corner of the pub. But the seed was sown.

Spread some happiness The idea isn’t new: the concept we now know as pay it forward was first described in an ancient Greek play. In 1916 Lily Hardy Hammond coined the term when she wrote, “You don’t pay love back; you pay it forward.” Aaaw. And of course the concept of “do unto others” forms a core tenet of most major religions.

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” - Dalai Lama But this isn’t about beliefs. It’s about what you do. Lord Richard Layard, British labour economist and Emeritus Professor of Economics at the LSE, co-edited the first World Happiness Report in 2012, and founded a mass movement to create a happier society: Action for Happiness. This charitable organisation shares research which explains that our genes

are responsible for about 50% of our personal happiness (thanks mum and dad), while our circumstances, including income, influence only about 10%. See - money really doesn’t make you happy! That remaining 40% is all about our actions and the conscious choices we make every day. Actionforhappiness.org provides practical suggestions for things we can all do to improve our mental wellbeing and create a happier and more caring society. Start a Happy Cafe Even a visit to the site, with its uplifting slogans, inspiring talks and key to happier living can chase away the blues. If you want to become a happiness activist (yes, that’s really a thing), check out the ideas for volunteering your time, energy or skills, orchestrating a positive flash mob or hosting a happiness dinner. Or how about founding Leicestershire’s first Happy Cafe? These paeans of positivity are springing up around the UK. So come on, how about it? Let us know. We’ll spread the happy word. And we’ll happily join you. URBAN FOX JULY 2015 61

Would you take life advice from the beverage that wanted to teach the world to sing? Maybe not. But the new Choose Happiness campaign has struck a chord with new feature writer Eve Grey. We all know a moaner. You know, the grumbler at the school gates who rejects every helpful suggestion. She doesn’t really want help, just an audience. Step away. And we’ve all got a friend who resolutely looks on the bright side. Who never hesitates to seize an opportunity. Who will cheerfully offer and ask for help or a favour. I know who I’d rather be. So those soon-to-be-familiar lyrics “Why wait for happiness to happen to you when it’s something that you can just choose to do?” made me wonder what I’m waiting for. Do you, like me, believe you’ll be happy when your partner appreciates you? When your quiet excellence is rewarded with a pay rise? When you’ve lost that stubborn stone? When your teenager learns to put his washing in the basket? Or just as soon as your toddler ends her current meltdown? Well this summer, I’ve resolved to count my blessings (see page 23). Accept the things I cannot change. And find the courage to change the things I can. Why not join me?

PEOPLE & PLACES

Say

Cheese Crowned the world’s happiest place in this year’s World Happiness survey, Switzerland is a country of contrasts. From mind-blowing landscapes to charming medieval cities, the land of clocks, chocolate and cheese, has what it takes to make everyone smile.

25HOURS HOTEL

25HOURS HOTEL

Zurich Forget Swiss stereotypes because in Zurich West, the city’s creative district, you’re more likely to see cool artistic spaces, eclectic design stores, and jazz clubs than touristy chocolate shops. All of which makes this the perfect setting for the value-minded 25hours Hotel. Here, award-winning interior designer Alfredo Häberli echoes graffiti-splattered streetscapes by scribbling his personal local recommendations on surfaces and objects throughout the hotel to encourage guests to visit his favourite hotspots. Custom-designed multifunctional furniture abounds, while imaginative clocks make checking the time a thrilling artistic endeavour. Prices from £82 per night.

THE CAMBRIAN

Adelboden Nestled deep in a valley in the Swiss Alpine village of Adelboden, The Cambrian looks out onto one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes. Combining sleek, modern design with innovative uses of natural, local materials, The Cambrian’s exquisite interior effortlessly reflects its exterior, adding to the purifying immensity of the mountains. The hotel’s 750m² spa is adjacent to an outdoor terrace where bathers and steamers can cool off after one of the many treatments offered. With some of Switzerland’s best ski slopes as well as hiking trails, this outstanding location is the ideal destination for both winter and summer. Prices from £130 per night.

GIARDINO LAGO

Lake Maggiore When Daniela and Philippe Frutiger started to design a hotel on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, they knew they had to do something exceptional to complement the setting. Throughout the public spaces, the décor is warm using earthy materials such as stone and wood, with splashes of lime and sky blue, paying homage to Mother Nature’s own palette. The 14 rooms and one suite provide isolated retreats, where guests can indulge in their surroundings. Decorated with Designers Guild fabrics and smokedoak parquet, rooms are light and uplifting, with touches that offer a playful nod to the towering mountains just outside. Prices from £158 per night.

“Happiness is doing what I love” says illustrator and Art House founder Kathy Klein. I was born Katarzyna Klein, to Polish parents and grew up in Newtown Linford. My parents encouraged creativity and my mother taught my sister and me to make complicated Polish Christmas tree decorations from an early age. I’m sure my passion for art comes from her. Following a rather dismal grade in Art A-level I applied for a foundation course at Loughborough. The course was very experimental with opportunities to explore a variety of mediums. I remember a visiting lecturer talking to us about degree courses on offer at London Colleges. She mentioned Central St Martins as being ‘prestigious’ and I went to take a look. I fell in love with its sense of energy and knew I wanted to study there. During my time at St Martins I was introduced to a Polish Poster Designer. She recognised something in my work and encouraged me to apply for a travel bursary to study at the Fine Art Academy in Warsaw for 3 months. I had been to Poland with my parents and knew that the country has a strong history of excellent visual artists. It was a wonderful experience and an absolute eye opener to living under communist rule. I returned to London and began work as a freelance designer for M&S and The Observer Magazine. But it was my father’s death in 1988 that was the turning point. I spent a few months at home with my mother and on returning to London, decided it was time to put a portfolio together of my illustration work. After a lot of leg work, the commissions started to come in, producing illustrations for Harvey Nichols, Sunday Times, Usborne Publishing, BBC to name but a few. After 6 years of going it alone, I was signed up by Eastwing Illustration Agency and also

I also spent 10 years teaching on various degree courses and met some incredibly talented and inspiring students.

In 2004 I returned with my husband and children Louis and Eden to live in Stoneygate. One day my neighbour Hannah popped over to see if she could purchase an illustration as a wedding gift. She was taken aback by the boxes of artwork and suggested I exhibit in my own home. I thought she was mad! But she was encouraging and offered to open her house to exhibit some of her sculptural pieces. We put together a handmade flyer, invited a few other artists to exhibit with us and ‘Art House’ was born. It’s now an annual event and gives everyone the opportunity to view ‘extraordinary art in ordinary houses’, meet the artists, purchase artwork or commission unique pieces. We had 1000+ visitors this year visiting 9 venues and admiring the work of over 50 artists. Having spent 20+ years answering briefs I am now painting for myself and it’s a wonderful feeling. When I’m not painting I can be found at Revivals Dress Agency on Clarendon Park Road, which I co-own with my friend Manda. Who knows what’s next for me but I’m incredibly lucky to have realised my dream of being creative for a living.
