FASHION & BEAUTY

Poolside

Perfection Longing to look pristine by the pool? Check out our low-effort beauty tricks for a summer of poolside glamour.

FACE FACE

Prepare your skin for summer with a little bit of colour. We love Lancôme Flash Bronzer Face Gel. This nongreasy, subtle self-tanner, has a gliding texture that can be applied in the blink of an eye and dries quickly, creating lasting colour for up to 5 days. Alternatively try Clarins Summer Bronzing & Blush Compact that contains a beautiful harmony of three bronze and peach shades for a natural sun-kissed glow. Add a touch of colour to the cheeks with Stila’s Aqua Glow Watercolour Blush. A weightless, waterbased blush, it blends effortlessly to leaving a dewy, natural-looking flush.

EYE SEYES

For eye makeup that won’t melt in the hot sun, start with a simple lid base. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick is a long-lasting, do-it-all eye shadow. This tug-free formula can be used to shade, define, smoke up and highlight eyes, without creasing, flaking or fading …and it's completely water-proof! Next opt for a budgeproof, sweat-proof liquid liner. Estee Lauder Pure Colour Liquid Eyeliner Duo

in Black Sands, offers a holiday's worth of eye make-up in one easy wand. Complete the look with Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara to make lashes look thick and luscious.

LIPS

LIPS

Stay-put lip colour is the staple of poolside glamour. Opt for a full on waterproof formula – Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick comes in 30 shades and 2 finishes– or a long-lasting product. Aveda’s Feed My Lips Pure NourishMint Lipstick contains a balanced blend of botanical waxes which help deliver longwearing benefits and does not feather. Plus choose from 22 shades created to complement your hair colour. For the perfect lip use a lip primer to create a smooth base; then line lips with a lip liner, before completing with a rich, longwearing colour.

NAILS ILS

NA

Everyone knows that bold, bright colours make the perfect partner for tanned fingers and toes. If you’re as

disorganised as us and relying on your own application skills then Rimmel’s Super Gel Nail Polish is easy to apply and dries like a regular nail polish, no UV lamps needed. But if you do have time for a professional mani and pedi, this will ensure it lasts for the duration of your vacation. Colour wise orange margarita and aquamarine are the shades de la saison. But even a classic French manicure will distract your (sun) bed-fellow from reading their book by the pool.

SKININ

SK

Thanks to the latest innovations in sun protection, complaints regarding tricky application and unflattering residue are no longer an excuse for not wearing sunscreen. We love Ultrasun’s Glimmer Shimmering Sun Protection SPF50+. This water-resistant, nongreasy, yet deeply moisturising formula glides effortlessly over the body, leaving the skin protected and glowing in a single application. It’s so fast-absorbing, you’ll forget you’re even wearing it. URBAN FOX JULY 2018 19

Pink Hair

DON'T CARE Subtle and feminine, pink is officially the shade du jour. These fashion-forward beauties prove everyone should try pink, at least once.

JANUARY JONES

KATE HUDSON Kate’s rose gold glow provides an all-over tone, creating a wearable, every day look. The ombre finish is fashioned into waves, to highlight this understated hue.

Not convinced? Dip a toe with highlights. January’s subtle streak of pink adds another dimension to her platinum locks. The easiest way to pep up your look.

Pamella Roland

The key to pulling off Hailey’s punk-but-nottoo-pink look is to keep the rose tones subtle; with natural roots to create a cool and effortless vibe.

HAYLEY BALDWIN

KALEY CUOCO SALMA HAYEK Pretty in pink, Kaley adds warmth to her signature blonde pixie crop. This soft pink candyfloss shade makes a stunning style statement.

Salma proves that pink isn't just for millennials. Styled in retro waves, this is the ultimate girly girl’s dream. A famed brunette, Salma’s locks are actually a wig, but we love, love, love!

HEALTH & WELLBEING

LET'S TALK

About sex You take your kit to work determined to go to the gym on the way home, but by the end of the day you just can’t face it. If health, wellbeing, and weight isn’t motivating you to exercise, then maybe a better sex life could be all the inspiration you need, says Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40. Exercise has been shown to increase your libido and give your sex life a boost both physiologically and psychologically. Here’s how just a little exercise can go a long way. Chandeliers optional.

Reduces Stress

Stress has been shown to have a negative effect on libido. A normal stress response releases the hormone cortisol. But if elevated levels of cortisol are being released for prolonged periods, then it can suppress other hormones, leading to a lower sex drive. Exercise can help reduce stress levels, so whether it’s a hot and heavy

workout in the gym, or tantric yoga session, keep stress at bay.

Increases Energy

Studies have shown that one of the biggest barriers to a healthy sex life, is energy levels. Our active, stressful lives drain our energy, leaving little for passion. Exercise has been proven to increase energy levels, so by adding some regular exercise into your day, you can top up your energy levels to beat the “I’m too tired” effect on your life!

Boosts Confidence

Exercise can help build confidence, even after just one session. Over time, regular exercise improves confidence through better body shape, improved energy levels and feel good hormones. This boost to our self-assurance can transfer to the bedroom too, with increased levels of confidence between the sheets.

Heightens Sensation

Exercise increases blood flow and stimulates the nervous system, leading to heightened sensations, which can continue long after you’ve finished exercising. So as well as getting you motivated for sex, it can also increase pleasure during. Now that has to be worth seriously thinking about!

Improves Performance Sex itself is an intense physical performance that requires strength, endurance, and flexibility. Regular exercise such as resistance work increases your muscle strength, cardiovascular exercise improves fitness and performance, and exercise such as yoga can increase flexibility. Pilates, yoga and weight training can also improve core and pelvic floor muscles for better sex.

Raises Testosterone

Exercise, particularly resistance exercise can help to balance hormones and increase testosterone levels. Testosterone isn’t just a libido booster for men, it also has a similar effect for women i.e. higher sex drive, better moods, more energy and heightened arousal. Don’t worry, it won’t give you a beard and bulging muscles, but may well give your relationship a boost.

Releases Hormones

Exercise is proven to release endorphins and adrenaline, not only putting you in a better mood but also shown to increase sexual arousal and even orgasm in women. The combination of adrenaline, endorphins and testosterone could be the sexual cocktail you are looking for to give your sex drive the kiss of life! Finally don't overdo it. The exercise that is. Like anything in life, it’s about getting a balance. So what are you waiting for – this summer let sex be your motivator! URBAN FOX JULY 2018 23

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Passion FOR LIFE When you know what your passion is, you feel motivated, inspired, and so much clearer about what life should be, says life guru Sarah Mettrick. As a child I was subjected to some intolerable situations, some of which still haunt me today. I’ll try to gather myself and share the trauma… I was taken to not one, but several Cliff Richard concerts. OK, it’s out there, I’ve said it. I had to endure these ghastly episodes due to my big sister’s greatest passion Cliff. Why couldn't she have loved Simon Le Bon or George Michael, I still experience nasty flashbacks whenever I hear Devil Woman. Although the subject matter was debatable in my sister’s case, I’m a huge fan of anyone being passionate. For some a single passion motivates their entire life which they invest their heart and soul into and it defines who they are. But for others passions come and go, they change over time or the motivation to even be passionate gets lost along the way. We often think of being passionate as sexual - which of course it can be. Let’s face it we’ve all knocked back a gin or four and morphed into Anastasia Steele. I’m all for being fifty shades happier, but how often in our everyday lives (fully dressed) do we share our true feelings with no inhibitions? Deep inside we all have

desires, hopes, goals and motives they shape our unique personalities. Yet they get buried under frantic modern lifestyles and preconceived ideas on how we should behave. We need to dig deep to pull them free and live by them fearlessly. Then we can live passionately.

Be open minded and curious, above all be brave. If you love someone tell them. Have you ever listened to someone talking passionately about something? It’s inspiring and contagious. They hold your full attention while totally absorbed in their subject and wholeheartedly believe in what they are saying. It’s influential, charismatic and their confidence sells you on whatever it is they are talking about. They know and accept their true values and have no interest in following the crowd just to be accepted.

But it doesn't have to be a specific topic we are passionate about, we can simply live passionately in accordance with what makes us feel alive and stimulated. So how do we do that? Well say yes for a start. Yes to what you hold to be true. Yes to random spontaneous opportunities. Be open minded and curious, above all be brave. If you love someone tell them. If you want to dance in the freezer isle of Morrisons singing ‘Just one Cornetto...’ then do it. If you care about something broken - go fix it. Was it Van Gogh who said he would rather die of passion than of boredom? Good point well made! So dive down into the most honest part of yourself and be who you were born to be. Express your feelings and ideas without restraint and immerse yourself fully into what you truly love and feel strongly about. Don’t worry if it takes time to break free, you will get there if you’re passionate enough! In the meantime I’ll let my sister ogle at her Cliff calendar (August…really?) I’m pouring myself a large G & T and waiting for Mr Grey to come home… URBAN FOX JULY 2018 25

Strawberries Recreate the taste of Wimbledon at home with these mouth-watering recipes from Waitrose.

Strawberry, Elderflower & Mint Pavlova Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Serves: 8 Ingredients: 4 free range egg whites 1 lime, juice 200g caster sugar 400g British strawberries, halved 5 tbsp elderflower cordial Small handful mint leaves, shredded 150ml double cream 150g Greek yogurt

1

Preheat oven to 150˚C. Draw a 20cm circle on parchment; place upside-down on a baking tray. Using electric beaters, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt and a few drops of lime juice. Start slowly then turn up the speed and beat to firm-ish peaks.

3

Meanwhile, mix together the strawberries, 2 tbsp cordial and the remaining lime juice. Macerate for 30 minutes, then stir through the shredded mint. Using a balloon whisk, whip the cream to soft peaks.

2

Beat in sugar in 3 additions, combining completely between each, to a stiff and glossy meringue. Pile onto the parchment inside the 20cm circle and use the back of the spoon to make a dip in the middle. Put in the oven, lower the heat to 120˚C and bake for 1 hour. Once baked, turn the oven off, prop the door open and cool completely (around 2 hours).

4

In a separate bowl, mix the yogurt with the remaining 3 tbsp elderflower cordial. Fold the yogurt into the cream, then pile onto the cooled meringue. Top with the strawberry mixture, spooning over any extra juices, and decorate with a few whole mint leaves.

Strawberry & White Chocolate Tarts Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 100g white chocolate 156g pack 6 sweet pastry cases 100g mascarpone 200ml reduced fat British crème fraîche ½ tsp vanilla powder 400g British strawberries, hulled and halved 2–3 tbsp strawberry jam

1

Break the chocolate into a small heatproof bowl and sit over a pan of gently simmering water, stirring once or twice until melted. Remove from the heat and leave to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, brush a layer of white chocolate on the inside of each pastry case then leave to set.

2

Meanwhile, beat together the mascarpone, crème fraîche and vanilla until well blended, then beat in the remaining melted white chocolate. Divide the mixture between the pastry cases.

3

Arrange the strawberries cut-side down on the filling. Gently heat the jam with 1 tbsp water then brush over the strawberries to coat evenly. Leave to set, then serve. Best eaten on the day of making.

Strawberry & Camomile Shortcakes Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Makes: 6 Ingredients: 400g British strawberries, hulled & halved 2-3tbsp caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon, finely grated 300ml pot double cream 2 camomile teabags 90g unsalted butter, cubed 2 tbsp whole milk 250g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 50g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Mix the strawberries, caster sugar and lemon zest in a small bowl and set aside to soften a little.

2

Warm 125ml cream in a small pan with the teabags until simmering. Remove from the heat, add the butter and infuse for 5 minutes. Squeeze the teabags and discard. Slice the cucumber very thinly using a sharp knife or mandolin. Place in a colander and sprinkle with salt. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Preheat the grill. Thread the salmon onto skewers and set aside. Rinse the cucumber under cold water to remove the salt, then pat dry. Place in a bowl and add the sugar, dill, vinegar, seasoning and 2 tbsp cold water. Set aside. Grill the kebabs for 6–8 minutes, turning occasionally, to cook on all sides until cooked through. Pour the liquid off the cucumber salad and discard. Serve the salad with the salmon kebabs.

Tuna Burger Ingredients: 300g frozen yellowfin tuna steak, thawed 100g soft white breadcrumbs Grated zest and juice of 1 small lemon 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 medium egg, beaten 2 tbsp olive oil 50g bag wild rocket 300g red choice tomatoes, quartered 2 baby avocados, skinned, stoned and sliced 1 red onion, thinly sliced Handful coriander leaves Method: Place the tuna in a food processor and pulse until finely minced. Transfer to a large bowl and mix in the breadcrumbs, lemon zest, mustard and egg. Shape into 4 even-sized burgers and chill for 15 minutes. Cook the burgers in a large, non-stick frying pan for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Meanwhile, mix together the lemon juice and olive oil to make a dressing for the salad. Arrange the rocket, tomatoes, avocado and red onion on a platter. Drizzle with the lemon dressing and scatter over the coriander. Serve with the burgers. URBAN FOX JULY 2018 31

LIFE & WORK

The Dating

GAME

Whether you’re still searching for Mr Right in your forties, or returning to dating post-divorce, putting yourself out there can be a daunting prospect. Our undercover Urban Fox reports from the frontline.

The last time I dated anyone, a mobile phone really wasn’t, sexting was a spelling mistake and wax was for furniture. But that was a whole marriage ago. And things have changed. A lot. For a start, “my mate fancies your mate” is no longer the pre-cursor to a bit of exploratory snogging, let alone a long term relationship. Instead, everyone’s swiping right, left and centre. But until I read that a certain Mr DiCaprio had joined Tinder, I wasn’t convinced that a secret algorithm was really a better way to find my ideal match. Of course Tinder is unlikely to land me a date with Leonardo. Even if he happened to live nearby and share my Facebook interests, I’m no Bar Refaeli. In that sense, Tinder is refreshingly like real life: you spot someone in the

crowd you like the look of, make eye contact and, if they like the look of you, say hello and take it from there. I know. Scary. Other dating websites claim to be more scientific. They’re certainly harder work, with exhaustive questionnaires and profiles to complete. Sometimes the basis for a “match” can be mystifying but the messages that follow let me know if we’re on the same page. I’m learning to sort meaningful relationship wheat from mindless er opportunity. ‘Just looking to have fun’ isn’t hard to decode and sometimes just what I need. But self-preservation rules. I would never commit to dinner on a first date. Life’s too short to suffer through to dessert when I can’t quite muster

the brutal honesty required to leave after the starter because, news flash, sometimes the camera does lie (or someone did anyway). However, if we hit it off over coffee, we can arrange second a date. Nirvana. Well, it’s the height of my dating achievement. I know that if I want to meet someone adventurous or arty or spiritual, I have to do adventurous or arty or spiritual things myself. I’m discovering a whole new network of single friends that way. I still love my old married mates it’s just sometimes I need to talk to someone in the same boat. Which is probably why I’m addicted to disastrous dating blogs and magazine articles. But I’m not on a frantic quest to find the one. It’s just dating. I’m experimenting. Practising. Having fun. Recovering my mojo and refining what I really want. It’s a process of elimination like a mental game of Who Am I? Knocking down the attributes of unsuccessful dates in my head can be quite cathartic. Because I am not my relationship status. I am the same me with or without a plus one. And for the time being, I’m very happy to think that I’ll never have to share a bathroom again. Take that smug marrieds! URBAN FOX JULY 2018 33

DRAMA

Queen Cate Blanchett is feisty, witty, sharptongued and lively. All the things we love in a woman. Aside from her indisputable acting talent, she is also a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement. Here she talks children, change and breaking boundaries.

LIFE & WORK

Blanchett is on a high. Her latest project Ocean's 8, surprised many industry observers by earning a respectable $100 million world-wide in its first three weeks of release. But Blanchett and her largely all-female cast members were concerned about the possible impact on future femmedriven projects had the film flopped. "[Ocean's 8] is a wonderful, fun romp and piece of entertainment. If this is being forced by the media to stand for all female-centric films, it’s an enormous pressure — it’s unsustainable. And it makes it difficult for other films with women at the centre to sink or swim on their own merit...We have to get beyond that kind of expectation and simply allow such films to find their place." In the meantime, audiences who delighted in Blanchett's effortlessly charismatic turn in Ocean's 8 will have a chance to see her in a very different kind of movie, The House with a Clock in its Walls, a family phantasy film directed by horrormeister Eli Roth and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. Cate plays a mysterious witch who befriends a 10-year-old boy, Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), whose life is turned upside down when he goes to live in a quiet town with his eccentric uncle Jonathan (Jack Black). Based on the eponymous 1973 children’s classic written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, House evolves into a mesmerising Gothic tale when Lewis discovers the that his uncle’s old house which has a mysterious tick-tocking heart, is in fact a living, breathing entity. "Horror is my favourite genre and I only signed up because I thought I would die some hideous, gruesome, bloody death," Blanchett joked. "But this movie is very much in keeping with the kind of magic that Spielberg films often bring."

This isn't the first time that Blanchett has ventured into the phantasy realm having previously starred in Cinderella as the evil stepmother and of course as Galadriel in Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit films. Judging by her diverse portrayals in the criticallyacclaimed Carol, her Oscar winning turn in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, or as Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator, it's clear that the immensely talented Australian actress has never placed any limits or settled into any pattern when it comes to her acting repertoire. "I like the unknown factor when it comes to choosing a role or a project," explains Blanchett. "I usually rely on my instinct in the sense that if I know right away how I can interpret a character, I'll usually turn it down. That's why I agreed to play Bob Dylan (in Todd Haynes's I'm Not There) or the part of Carol. Not only is there some risk involved but there's also this excitement that comes from exploring new territory and I love to surprise myself.” Though she likes to downplay the intensity of her acting devotion, she

"I think women have become much bolder now and are much more ready to push for change." has certainly emerged as a staunch defender of women's rights as evidenced by her vociferous calls for equal pay and opportunities for women in film at the Cannes Film Festival in May. As head of the jury, she bemoaned the fact that only 3 of the 21 films in competition were directed by women and argued for radical changes in her industry. "There have always been powerful women in the industry but it's been hard to effect change even when they wanted to use their power because

the system around them wasn't supportive enough. But I think women have become much bolder now and are much more ready to push for change. This is the kind of passion that Blanchett brings to her world. Before she decided that acting was her artistic path of least resistance, she was an aspiring art scholar and architect aficionado in her native home of Melbourne before studying at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. "I like collecting art now. I enjoy all the visual arts, painting, architecture. I think if I hadn't become an actress I would have tried to pursue a career as an artist or writer. Most of the time I wanted to become an architect, or a curator, perhaps in a museum. I am fascinated by art, but as an artist I am completely untalented." She is also an avid reader which allows her to "relax and regroup" when not on a film set. "Reading is one of my passions. Once I pick up a book, it gives me this beautiful feeling. I step into the world created by the words of the writer and the images those pages create in my mind." Apart from the arts, Blanchett is focused on her home life where her children - sons Dashiell, 15, Roman, 13, and Ignatius, 9, and three-yearold adopted daughter, Edith occupy most of her attention. "When you have four children to look after you have to be very efficient in the way you manage your time. Your children don't care about how many hours you've been on a set or how difficult or emotional your scenes have been that day - you have to check all those things at the door when you go home. Your children need your attention and love and you have to be there for them."

HYBRID

Uncovered If you’ve heard of hybrids but think they’re too convoluted to own; it's time to leave your old way of driving behind. Life just got a whole lot easier. We uncover exactly what a hybrid car is and how it works.

MECHANICS

In the context of cars the term ‘hybrid’ almost always refers to a petrol-electric vehicle. Hybrids comprise two engines: one petrol, one electric, working together in tandem to give you the best of both worlds, switching seamlessly and quietly between electric at lower speeds and using petrolpower when needed.

FUEL

Having the advantage of both electric and petrol power doesn’t mean that you can run your hybrid without fuel. The electric and conventional engines in a hybrid are designed to work together. So even though a hybrid can operate in an electric-only mode, it must have fuel in the tank – even if only a little. Trying to run a hybrid purely on the electric engine without having the fuel to power the conventional engine would result in damage.

CHARGE

There’s often some confusion between hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles. That’s because both types of vehicle have an electric engine and a rechargeable battery under the bonnet. The big difference between them is that a hybrid vehicle has an electric and a conventional fuel powered engine, while an electric vehicle only has an electric engine. This means the electric vehicle has to be plugged in once the power runs out. By contrast the hybrid vehicle recharges its own battery on the move, using excess power from the engine and regenerative braking so you don't need to worry about plugging it in. So, issues such as how to charge a hybrid car and locating charging points do not apply, as these batteries never need to be plugged in.

DISTANCE

There’s no need to worry about how far you’re travelling in hybrid cars, just fill up with fuel and continue on your way, just as you would in any conventional car. And when the battery does run low, excess power from the engine charges it back up again. And that’s not all, whenever you

brake, energy is recycled to charge the battery too – so nothing gets wasted.

SAVINGS

If you want a car that maximises fuel efficiency, while minimising emissions, then a hybrid will be easy on your purse and the environment too. New Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) rules came into effect in April 2017 and cars are charged both according to their CO2 emissions levels and their price when new. Petrol and diesel engine cars emitting 99g/km currently have an annual tax bill of £140 to pay, whereas a comparable hybrid pays £130. There are other savings to be had too. In London, for example, some hybrid cars will be exempt from the congestion charge if they emit less than 75g/km. A hybrid vehicle has the advantage of being able to switch to its electric motor to drive in heavy traffic, built-up areas or at slower speeds, thereby using no fuel at all to power its conventional engine. Obviously, you do still need to fill up your tank, but hybrid efficiency means your fuel lasts that much longer. Plus with less wear and tear on the brakes, fewer parts to replace and maintenance costs comparable with conventional cars, we think we’ve found our perfect match. URBAN FOX JULY 2018 37

Coming Up

ROSES Whenever there’s a poll of the UK’s favourite flower the rose almost always comes out on top. The enduring appeal of the rose is understandable; the individual blooms, glorious fragrance and wide array of colours… …that is except blue. Roses lack the anthocyanidin pigment called ‘delphinidin’, which produces blue flowers. Over the centuries breeders have tried – and failed – to create a blue rose. The reality is that no amount of breeding will create a blue rose, and naming a variety ‘Blue Moon’ (it’s mauve) sadly doesn’t alter the fact. Thirty years ago I’d have sniffed at the idea of growing roses in my own garden, blue or otherwise. To my younger me they were old fashioned, dowdy, a haven for pests and diseases requiring a regular bombardment of chemicals to stay healthy. Well that was then. Now I have over a dozen different varieties of rose and I love them with a passion. When we bought our house, the garden had just two roses in it. A huge ‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk’ climber

on the north side of the house, which was attempting to break into the first floor window, while an equally overgrown ‘Stanwell Perpetual’ wafted its fragrance around the garden when in bloom. Both have stayed, but the ‘Himalayan’ has had a severe haircut, which has brought the beautifully scented flowers down to a sniffable height. You may think that roses have to be in full sun to thrive, but some will tolerate degrees of shade, and others full shade. Apart from the ‘Himalayan’ we also have a less rampant ‘Mortimer Sackler’ on our north wall. This delicately beautiful climber, bearing light pink flowers, is an exceptionally healthy and almost thornless variety. Roses are surprisingly tough too. They tolerate heavy clay soil, although won’t cope well in a fast draining sand. Sunshine and good air circulation will encourage the best blooms and always water at the base, as roses dislike being watered from above as it turns the buds to mush. Thankfully, East Midland gardens provide very good growing conditions for roses.

Radio 4 Gardener’s Question Time panellist, Matthew Wilson reveals why he’s wild about roses. One rose I wouldn’t be without is ‘Winchester Cathedral’, a beautiful white flowered shrub rose with lightly scented flowers. I have 10 of them all around the garden, creating a visual continuity. Unlike my climbers they prefer full sunshine and are ideal for growing in pots and containers if you have limited space. I also love some of the vibrant coloured roses, including the apricot orange ‘Port Sunlight’ and spicy purple-red ‘Munstead Wood’. And I will always find space for old shrub roses like ‘Charles de Mills’ and ‘Roseraie de l’Hay’ for their large opulent blooms and exquisite fragrance. So what changed to bring about my now deep rooted passion for roses? The realisation that they are great in mixed plantings, and look especially good with the naturalistic perennials and grasses that I love. The other game changer was discovering the fabulously tough and disease free modern shrub roses now being bred. They are as easy to look after, as they are beautiful. URBAN FOX JULY 2018 57

WHAT’S ON

Sherlock Holmes, 2 - 7 Jul, Curve

JULY 2018

Sherlock Holmes The Final Curtain

Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Sherlock Holmes lives in retirement on the South Coast. He keeps bees, occasionally casts his fly fishing rod, even plays his Stradivarius when the rheumatism allows. All too aware that he’s older and slower, he’s concerned that he might have lost his touch, paranoid that he is an easy target for his enemies. So when Mary Watson (wife of his former associate Dr John Watson) tracks him down, telling him she has seen her long-dead son, James, through the window of 221B Baker Street, apparently alive and well, Holmes is determined to solve the mystery and confront his own demons at the same time. Chilling, gripping and filled with unforeseen twists and revelations, this world premiere production stars Robert Powell and Liza Goddard.

Inspired by a true story, Everybody's Talking About Jamie is the new award-winning five-star hit musical for today. Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn't quite fit in. Jamie is terrified about the future. He is going to be a sensation. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight. Nominated for 5 Olivier Awards, Everybody's Talking About Jamie will be broadcast live from the Apollo Theatre in London's Shaftesbury Avenue to cinemas nationwide.

In a rapidly changing world on the brink of revolution, this tight-knit, tradition-steeped Jewish community live in a delicately balanced society where time-honoured traditional values are challenged by the changing social views and growing anti-semitism of Czarist Russia. When his daughters decide they want to marry for love instead of accepting possible suitors, Teyve must convince his wife, the elders and the whole village that to marry for love is the greatest tradition of them all. Fiddler on the Roof contains some of the most memorable songs in musical theatre history, including Tradition, Matchmaker and the unforgettable If I Were A Rich Man.

PEOPLE & PLACES

Romantic

RENDEZVOUS When life gets busy it’s often our relationships that suffer. We deal with work, the house and getting the kids to school on time, but romance? Sorry, I’ve got packed lunches to make, says Kirsty France. But maybe it’s time to find a babysitter, dust off my best clothes and head off into the sunset. Here’s my top destinations for a break that will rekindle your passions and mine.

We’ll always have Paris

I know it’s a total cliché but Paris was made for romance. You can drink a toast with fine wine over a fabulous candlelit meal. Spend your day wandering hand in hand through some of the best art galleries and museums in the world (but get there early or you’ll have to stand in a very unromantic queue). I love the Batobus, a boat that cruises along the Seine in a loop that takes in all of the sights. You can stay on board and enjoy the views for a couple of hours or get off to visit any of the attractions along the way. Then back to your hotel to get dressed up for a romantic meal or whatever else takes your fancy!

Rediscover the countryside

If you’d rather stay closer to home, wait until autumn and find yourself a cosy cottage in the UK. Go for a long walk in the countryside or along the coast, then snuggle up with a hot chocolate in front of a log fire at the end of the day. Alternatively, you could find a country pub and spend the evening talking nonsense over a couple of pints like you did when you first met. Or was that just me? Best of all, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to location. We’re surrounded by gorgeous beaches and glorious countryside. My favourite spots are in Devon, Dorset and North Yorkshire because I went there when I was first married. Choose the place that holds great memories for you.

Five star luxury

You could go out, but what if you want to stay in? It’s hard to get romantic when you’re surrounded by dirty laundry, so why not

stay in somewhere else? Book a gorgeous hotel where you can have breakfast in bed without small children bouncing on your pillow (I’m positive that’s not just me). Order room service or get dressed up and head to the restaurant as if it’s your first date. The best thing about spending your weekend in a hotel is that you don’t have to travel far. You can explore a new city or hide away just down the road. Treat yourself to a hotel with an award winning spa or michelin star restaurant, it’s up to you. This is one holiday where you can be as indulgent as you like. I hope I’ve given you a few ideas to rekindle the romance in your relationship. Personally I’ve got my eye on a tour from Dubrovnik to Split and Hvar in Croatia, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to leave the kids behind for that one!

Spend your day wandering hand in hand through some of the best art galleries and museums in the world Wherever you choose, remember it’s your definition of romance that matters. If that involves bungee jumping, go for it! Have a great time. URBAN FOX JULY 2018 65

MY WAY

On my nightstand

Poldark series by Winston Graham

Chloe Pollard “Working for myself gave me the flexibility to fit the business around my family, rather than the other way around”, says Chloe Pollard owner of The Willoughby Book Club I was born in the village of Desford, in west Leicestershire and grew up with my Mum, Dad, Sister Amber and our cat George. I attended schools in Desford and Bosworth, and in the summer holidays we’d usually go to Portugal, where my Nana lived. I’ve very fond memories of long hot weeks spent on the beach, eating fresh seafood and playing in the sun. After studying Biology, Psychology and History at A’ Level, I undertook a Speech Therapy degree at De Montfort University. I loved it. I’d always been very interested in the sciences, and knew that I wanted to pursue a career in Speech Therapy from an early age. After university I worked with children with learning difficulties. My role was to support them in the development of their communication skills through a variety of tools and techniques, including multi-sensory environments and makaton (think Mr Tumble!). My days were really varied – which made for an interesting and rewarding role.

During this time I’d moved to Rugby to live with my partner Adam, who was commuting daily to London. After a year, Adam secured a local position, and we were ready for another move. We were desperate to buy our own place – preferably in the countryside, so when we saw the house in Willoughby Waterleys, we fell in love with it immediately. Adam is a voracious reader, and in 2012 I’d been looking for a book subscription gift for his birthday but couldn’t find anything. When I told him, we thought that there might be other people out there looking for something similar. 3 months later ‘The Willoughby Book Club’ was born. As with most small businesses, the difficulty early on was juggling our new venture alongside existing work commitments. We were both working full-time, and so building the business took up all of our time outside of work. Weekends and evenings disappeared under a pile of books! But when we were featured in the Guardian’s ‘top subscription gifts’ list for Christmas 2012, the dilemma of whether to go full-time with the business was taken out of our hands. Visits to our website went up 6000% overnight, and Adam handed his notice in. In 2014 I gave birth to our son Wyn and decided to leave my Speech Therapy post. By that point, the business had

grown to the level that there was more than enough for Adam and I to do on a full-time basis. More importantly, working for myself gave me the flexibility to fit the business around my family, rather than the other way around. This was especially important when Wyn was diagnosed with cancer in October last year. We’re so proud of how he’s dealt with it all. He finished his chemotherapy last month and we can now focus on getting back to normal family life and enjoying the summer together. Having launched our business from our kitchen table 6 years ago, today, we’re a team of 11 permanent staff, with thousands of subscribers in over 30 countries across the world, and our book subscription range is stocked by over a dozen providers including Boots & Debenhams. We’re extraordinarily proud of what we’ve achieved over the last 6 years, but we’re by no means at the end of the road. In the next couple of years we’d like to build on getting our products into as many high street stores as possible.
