hen asked to picture a figurehead of the British fashion design world, the vivacious fuchsia-haired Zandra Rhodes promptly comes to mind. So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.

Take the powder up onto your temples, as this will enhance the natural shape of your face and avoids the contouring coming to an abrupt end. If you have a thin face, don’t go overboard as you don’t want to look like a skeleton.

If you make a mistake and you’ve gone too far down the cheeks or used too much product, either use some cotton wool or a little bit of face powder to blend the edges.

Using the same shade as your cheeks and a smaller brush, contour the eyes slightly above the socket line. You’re essentially tracing the part of the eye you want to push back.

Choose a soft dense blusher brush with lots of movement, big fluffy brushes don’t work as effectively.
For an evening look you can do a little more contouring. Switch to a stiffer, denser brush which will hold more product and for more definition, brush along the jaw line, again gradually building up as you go.

If using powder products ensure your base is like for like. Cover your face with a light dusting of powder first. Don’t use dewy foundation as it won’t look natural, will stick, and look blotchy.

Start with the cheekbone and looking straight ahead begin gently shading using small circular movements – not back and forth - along the line. Use just a little powder and build up as required.
The nose is the trickiest area so if you’re a beginner it’s probably best to steer clear. Using the same colour as you’ve used everywhere else, contour lightly down each side of the nose. Finish the look with a little bit of powder highlighter on the cheeks, on the brow bone and then sweeping round to the top of the cheek bone. We’d recommend Laura Mercier Stardust Powder. If I could give one tip for women looking for a solution to their weight and size issues, it would be to lift weights, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts. From boosting energy levels to combatting stress, here’s my top 10 reasons why women should lift weights…

Weight lifting is better than cardiovascular exercise when it comes to burning calories. Not only do you burn calories during the workout, you can continue to burn calories for hours, even days after, through the increased oxygen consumption and repair process.

Weight lifting tears muscle fibres, as they repair, they become bigger and stronger. Don’t let the thought of tearing your muscle fibres put you off, it’s a natural process when we overload our muscles. Stronger, denser muscles means less wobbling and a smaller you.

Lean muscle mass, burns more calories day-to-day when at rest than fat does. So by increasing your muscle you increase your resting metabolic rate. The more calories you burn the more weight you’ll lose. Simple.

Weight lifting has an impact on body composition and shape. Denser
muscles are smaller, as they are tighter and more shapely than fat. Although still having its place, with cardiovascular and endurance exercise, weight loss is likely to be from muscle as well as fat.

BUSTING THE MYTH
“Weight lifting will make me big or bulk up”. This is probably the most common myth I hear from most women who come to see me about losing weight and exercise… BUT it is a myth. Weight lifting does increase muscle mass, yes, but this is denser, stronger, toned muscles and in most cases women will actually reduce their size. To be able to develop big muscles higher testosterone levels are required, which we women just don’t have. Trust me I’ve been trying to add size for a few years and it’s a lot harder than you can imagine!

It’s inevitable that becoming stronger, toned and less fat is going to have a knock on effect on your confidence, and nothing beats a confidence boost like a heavy lift.

Studies have shown women who lift weights regularly tend to have more powerful orgasms and enjoy a better sex life. Whether this boost of libido be from increased confidence and fitness or the slight raise in testosterone and endorphins, what’s not to like?!

There is nothing more empowering than learning how to lift weights, doing it well, and getting stronger. So power-up and feel the burn!

Weight training works in the same way as interval training. Your heart rate increases along with your oxygen in-take and then your heart rate rests. This ‘raise and recovery’ cycle is great for improving heart and lung health.

STRENGTH Do you find yourself watching from the side-lines as your less able, less qualified but more vocal colleagues are promoted above you? It could be that your employer favours extroversion. But with Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Avon’s ex-chief executive, Andrea Jung, both describing themselves as introverts, being the strong silent type might not be such a bad thing. The word introvert is often inaccurately used to describe someone that is shy. Although some introverts are shy, so in fact are some extroverts. Susan Cain author of QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Won’t Stop Talking instead defines introverts as people of “contemplation”. They are sensitive, introspective, modest and calm and spend a lot of time thinking and reflecting. They can enjoy social events, but also relish periods of solitude. Introverts work best alone, in quiet places, as they are easily overstimulated by surrounding noise and activity. Ringing phones, email alerts and the need to attend endless meetings can all be highly disruptive. In fact research suggests that when interrupted at work it can take an average of 25 minutes to refocus on whatever you were working on, so you can only imagine the impact of an openplan office on an introvert. At the other end of the spectrum, extroverts are people of “action.” They are energised by contact with others, are sociable, passionate but light-hearted. Unlike introverts, extroverts can tolerate higher noise levels and work well
collaboratively. Most teams flourish with a combination of both personalities. My husband and I run our own business, and while he, an extrovert, effectively runs the customer facing side of our operation, the introvert in me is happy to work quietly behind the scenes. The success of our business is because we play to our individual strengths, so I have never seen being an introvert as a personal flaw or professional obstacle. Still not convinced? Here are a few tips to help you fellow introverts thrive in the workplace: If you have something important to do, shut the office door. If you’re in a dreaded open-plan scenario wear earphones to help cancel out external noise. Let your team know if you prefer a certain type of communication – email over phone – and switch off the ringer / alerts if you need time to focus on completing a task. Schedule regular team meetings to restrict the need for impromptu ones.

Let your personality trait influence your career choices. Jobs such as graphic design, writing, computer programming and accountancy are all good options for those who like minimal interaction. While your louder colleagues might get more airplay, do contribute when you have something important to say. Introverts are observant and will often ask poignant questions, or view things from a different angle which will catch the attention of your boss. In a previous job I applied for a leadership role which involved a gruelling selection process. After endless individual assessments, it was the group task that was the most enlightening. Watching everyone clamour to be the most vocal, I sat back and listened, before offering a single observation a few minutes before the end. I got the job!

SPINACH AND WALNUT-STUFFED MUSHROOMS Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 4 large flat portabella mushrooms 150g frozen Waitrose whole
leaf spinach 1 tsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 25g walnut pieces, chopped 2 tbsp Waitrose soured cream ¼ tsp grated nutmeg 1 tbsp white breadcrumbs 2 tbsp grated Waitrose extra mature Cheddar

reheat the oven to 200˚C, gas mark 6. Remove the P stalks from the mushrooms, placing the caps stalkside-up in an oiled baking tin. Chop the stalks. Cook the spinach in a covered pan until defrosted then drain thoroughly.

eat the oil in a non-stick frying pan and add the H chopped mushroom stalks and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes until soft and golden. Stir in the spinach, walnuts and soured cream. Season and add the nutmeg.

poon the mixture onto the mushrooms. Scatter the S breadcrumbs and grated cheese over the mushrooms and bake for 12–15 minutes until cooked through and browned on top.
BAKED EGGS WITH CREAMY NUTMEG SPINACH Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

reheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Cook the spinach in P boiling water for 1 minute, drain and refresh under cold water. Squeeze out all the water with your hands and chop finely. Heat the butter in a small pan, add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Off the heat, stir in the milk a little at a time, then bring to the boil and stir until thick and smooth.

tir the chopped spinach into the sauce and add nutmeg and S seasoning. Spoon into the base of 2 large ramekins (250ml ramekins or larger) or shallow gratin dishes. Make shallow wells in the spinach, then break 2 eggs into each. Spoon over the crème fraîche and scatter with the grated Cheddar if using.

Place in a roasting tin filled with hot water and bake in the oven for 12–15 minutes until the eggs are set.

ook the potatoes in boiling C water for 6–8 minutes or until tender, then drain. Place the spinach in a large bowl, cover and microwave for 2–3 minutes or until just wilted, then squeeze the excess liquid out and roughly chop.

eanwhile, heat the oil in a M 23cm frying pan and cook the onion for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the potatoes.

eat together the eggs, B ricotta, milk and wilted spinach. Pour into the pan, mixing to combine, and cook gently for 4 minutes.

Joanna Hoffman was of course the right-hand woman to Apple mastermind Steve Jobs, and Winslet’s portrayal of her in the recent biopic of the tech entrepreneur was Oscar-nomination worthy. The mafia moll to which she refers is her latest turn in crime thriller Triple 9 –a tense, gritty thrill-ride in which the Russian Mafia battle with the police for supremacy and Winslet is fabulous but terrifying as the glamorous Mafia matriarch pulling all the strings. The Reading-born beauty is almost unrecognisable in the role, but naturally this was all part of the appeal.

After turning 40 last year, Winslet is quick to make one thing clear: she is not fazed by getting older and dismisses the so-called agenda of Hollywood to stay youthful, saying she is “not feeling the pressure”. Another aspect of modern celebrity that Winslet fervently avoids is social media, which didn’t exist when she first found fame. “As an actor you get to trick people into believing you really are someone else,” she says. “That’s why I think it’s a lot harder for young actors to be successful in this day and age where there is so much social media, so much access into their own personal lives and how celebrities live.” Winslet’s solution to this is to stay off social media altogether. This stance has allowed her to exist outside the gossip columns, her mystery and iconic status intact while she enjoys a quieter life in her West Sussex home. “I think fame is either ‘opt in or opt out’,” she opines. “I think it helps that I don’t live in a big city anymore. That’s made a huge difference because quite frankly I think paparazzi are too lazy to drive out here! And I’m at the stage in my life where it’s very humdrum: I don’t party, I don’t take drugs – never have done, and I don’t have any strange funky habits that people might be interested in photographing. And if you don’t give off the air of selfpromotion, I believe people respect that.” Of course, Kate Winslet doesn’t need to ‘self-promote’. UP? Remember when you could buy a house and sit back and wait for it to make you enough money to move up the property ladder? No me neither, but some do. But if your house is gathering dust rather than value, don’t despair there are some improvements you can make to create your own good fortune.
Before you get started, do recognise that not all home improvement projects will add value to your property. Some can make your house more saleable but they won’t necessarily add the amount spent to the selling price. But whether you decide to stay or go, take a look at these 5 ways to add both space and value to your property:
Loft Conversion
This is the easiest way to achieve an extra bedroom and bathroom and it doesn’t have to be too disruptive, as fortunately most of the work can be done from the outside. The key thing is to ensure that access to the loft is easy – spiral staircases can be problematic - and that the conversion compliments the rest of the house, rather than simply looking like it’s bolted on. In many cases a loft conversion is considered ‘permitted development’ so you won’t require planning permission. However, listed properties and those in conservation areas will require permission so do clarify with your local planning authority before you commence building work. Conservatory
Extending your living space is always a good idea if you’re looking to add value to your property. If you opt for a conservatory, make sure it matches the style of the rest of the house – a modern metal structure attached to a cottage would not be in keeping - and avoid it looking like a separate appendage. Think about enhancing the feeling of space and flow by installing the same flooring throughout your downstairs living area or by following a particular colour scheme and/or design style throughout the space. This will help to extend the eye, ensuring that the conservatory feels like part of the rest of the house.

Kitchen Upgrade
If you are only going to improve one room, make it the kitchen. Kitchens sell houses. It is the heart of the home, and with the move towards open plan living, the kitchen is not just for cooking. This might explain the increase in popularity of single storey kitchen extensions. The key to a knock-out kitchen is to create an attractive look with easy access between the sink, fridge and cooker. To avoid looking passé in a few years’ time, install equipment that is as up to date as you can possibly afford. Finally ensure the price bracket of your kitchen matches the price bracket of your house. A £10k kitchen in a £1m house will inevitably drag down the value.
A well thought-out reconfiguration will add value to your home. In many cases - providing the rooms created are of sufficient size - it’s more cost effective to turn a two-bedroom house into a threebedroom house than it is to invest in a new property with a third bedroom. If adding an additional room compromises the space, then consider knocking down non load-bearing walls to create more space but less rooms. Buyers are often more interested in the amount of usable space, rather than the number of bedrooms. Either way, a good builder will be able to re-design the floor plan to make the most of the space available.
Basement Conversion
This is the most expensive form of extension so do get your cost v profit calculations right before you get started. Any additions should remain in proportion to the original structure of the house. A small two-bed with a huge basement will make the property bottom-heavy. Basement conversions are also the most serious form of extension, as it affects the structural load of your property. You will need to hire specialists to do the design and installation, and it is likely you’ll need to move out for several months while the work is being done. That said, you can create amazing spaces underneath your home, which will allow your family to grow with the size of the property. Finally while these might look like quick wins – who has years to wait for their house to gain value - don’t fall into the trap of overdeveloping. All properties have a ceiling price and, no matter what you do to it, your property won’t command an asking price that is significantly higher than other properties on your street. Aloe Vera

Whether fresh or dried rosemary is a rich source of minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which help control heart rate and blood pressure.
Peppermint
The menthol contained in peppermint oil is thought to help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, including indigestion, dyspepsia, and colonic muscle spasms. Peppermint oil is also cooling and energising; add a few drops to your bath or in an oil burner for instant stress relief.
Basil
In addition to being a rich source of vitamin K, beta carotene, and iron, sweet basil is considered to harness antibacterial, anti-inflammatory,
and antioxidant properties, as well as improve circulation, protect the heart and help control blood sugar levels.
Chamomile
Commonly known as a great sleep aid and anxiety soother, Chamomile can also be used to ease the symptoms of teething pain, colic, indigestion and menstrual cramps. Applying a paste of dried chamomile flowers to a cut has also been shown to heal wounds faster.
Chives
Its high concentration of sulphur compounds and other essential oils, are partly responsible for its reported healing powers. Chives are thought to help ease stomach complaints, protect against heart disease and stroke and may even increase the body’s ability to digest fat.
Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek (Methi) seeds and leaves are a staple ingredient in many Indian dishes, but did you know that fenugreek contains anti-inflammatory compounds that aid in the treatment of skin problems and help reduce scarring. Apply a clean cloth soaked in methi seed paste to fight skin inflammation. Cautionary note: Some herbs should not be used if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or if you suffer from certain medical complaints or allergies. The excessive or incorrect use of some herbs may be harmful to health, so always seek professional advice first.

Andrea Allen My sister worked for KLM airlines and had heard about an opportunity with Emirates. Sick of hearing me moan about what to do next, she filled in the application on my behalf. After a gruelling assessment day, interview and six weeks basic training, I started work in economy class. Colleagues used to say everything happened when I was on the flight including a full-scale emergency landing after a bird strike! Following several on-board promotions, I attended a ‘Train the Trainer’ course and split my time between flying and the training college. From there, I went into leadership training, then security training, working with state security, the police and pilots, based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In 2004 I came back to the UK and saw a role for a ticket sales manager at Tigers. I didn’t want a regular 9-5 so applied for the job. I’ve since heard that they weren’t totally in favour of inviting a ‘trolley dolly’ for interview but thankfully they did. I started on a Wednesday and my predecessor retired two days later – the same day as a European match against Stade Francais! It was a real challenge, with my initial responsibility being to turn the Club’s reactive ticket office into a proactive sales office. Later I took on the hospitality sales side, then conference and events - Welford Road has to operate outside of match

“Never doubt what you are capable of doing” says Tigers Commercial Director, Andrea Allen. I was born in Leicester and brought up in Birstall with Mum, Dad and my sister Penny. I went to a local primary school and later De Lisle in Loughborough. I started work straight after ‘O’ Levels. I just wanted to get out into the world and earn money. I didn’t have a plan, so worked as a receptionist for a year and then spent seven years selling medical insurance.

It has been a massive Most inspirational woma n learning curve Ma rgaret Mountford ‘The Apprentice being on the ’ Board, there are big personalities and very successful people and I’m learning all the time. I don’t look at it as being ‘the first woman on the Board’ because I see it more as a reflection of the job I do and recognition of the importance of the commercial side of the club. On the field, Tigers is naturally male-orientated, but there are women in many roles outside of that. For me it isn’t about whether people believe you can do a job but your belief in your own ability. Never doubt what you are capable of doing. When you work in sport, it becomes an all-consuming passion, otherwise you wouldn’t do it. No matter what happens on the pitch you still have to perform off the pitch. I recently won ‘Most Inspirational Woman’ at the East Midlands Chamber’s Enterprising Women Awards. It was a great personal honour and privilege to receive the award and show what can be achieved by women in the commercial world; but more importantly it was recognition of a lot of hard work, by a lot of people at the Tigers. What next? I’m getting married to my partner Phil in June. Dealing with the detail when trying to work, now that’s a challenge!
