So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether penthouse. Awarded London fabulous a Commander of the British Empire for her efforts in the fashion industry, the designer has permanently printed of her mark on the international world textiles.

her garments procured by buyers Henri Bendel, Neiman Marcus and Saks, Zandra has since become the enigmatic textile designer of her age.

At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.

“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.” an This revolution, in bringing together eye for both design and production, secured Rhodes’ assimilation into the fashion world. In 1967 she opened The Fulham Road Clothes Shop, in London. Just two years on she’d taken her designs Vreeland Diana where to New York featured them in American Vogue. With

AGE PROOF YOUR

HAIR Want to know the secret to youthful hair? Check out our top 10 tips to achieve smooth, touchable and vibrant results, whatever your age

1

Don’t wash your hair too often, this will help preserve the hair’s natural moisture. Use an intensive hydrating shampoo, always wash using warm water and don’t over massage. We love Hydrate Shampoo by Purelogy, £15.90.

2

The condition of your hair is important, so apply a treatment mask once a week. Use a product that will nourish and saturate the hair, as well as offer anti-drying protection. Kérastase Nutridéfense Masque, £28.50, is a favourite of ours.

3

The food you eat can have an effect on your hair’s health. So for healthy, shiny hair, eat plenty of good fats, protein, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C. You could also consider supplements, specially formulated to boost the strength and health of your hair.

6

Try not to over style your hair, as it can damage the hair cuticle and lead to breakages. If using heated styling tools then always use a heat protection spray first. Check out Schwarzkopf got2b Guardian Angel 220°C Heat Protection, £4.19.

7

For a timeless, ageless lift go for an iconic pixie crop. Keep the sides shorter but go for texture and length through the top to give your hair versatility. Think Halle Berry and Helen Mirren! Stay away from longer hairstyles as you get older, as they tend to age a mature face.

8

Although some women can pull it off, grey hair can add years to your face. Cover up greys fast with a temporary tint. It washes out and is much gentler than permanent dyes. Keep the greys at bay in between salon visits with Colour Wow Root Cover Up, £28.50. It’s ingenious!

4

9

5

10

Get a ‘better than botox’ fringe! It’s a great way to disguise ageing frown lines and whether you opt for full, blunt or straight across version, a fringe is an affordable way to age proof your look. Just ask Dawn French and Claudia Winkleman. As we age, hair’s growth cycle shortens, so strands don’t reach their full potential. To make them look thicker, opt for a volumising mousse or root lifter. Try Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse, which gives shine, manageability and extra hydration for fuller looking hair.

Monochromatic colour ages you, so when you next have your colour refreshed, ask your colourist to weave through a few additional shades. Skin-brightening caramel and honey tones, are especially flattering around your face. To keep your colour vibrant, use a leave-in treatment that contains antioxidants and UV filters. UV light weakens hair’s outer layer, causing natural colour to fade and dye molecules to escape faster. We’re fans of Aveda’s Color Conserve™ Daily Color Protect, £20.50. URBAN FOX MAY 2015 19

Miracle

Workers 5 ways to a brighter, firmer and younger looking you!

IN YOUR PRIME To create your work of art you’ll need an ideal canvas. Start by applying one of the new generation radiance primers which will help to even your skin tone, blur pores and fine lines, boost skin luminosity, as well as help your make-up last longer. Reduce puffiness under your eyes, with a cooling gel. Pat on this Clarins formula for instant brightness and tightening. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Blur Primer, £29.50 Clarins Eye Contour Gel, £31

EYE TRICK OF THE

With brows becoming sparser, lashes less luscious and contours slackening, eyes are the first to show signs of ageing. A defined brow is youthful, so fill in any gaps using a powder or long-wear brow pen. To add depth to the eye, apply colour to the socket line. Avoid metallic or ultra matt eye shadow, luminous textures are best. Boost your lashes using a volume mascara, creating bulk at the roots to given the impression of thicker lashes. MAC Penultimate Brow Marker, £15.50 Clinique Lid Smoothie, £19.50 Estée Lauder Double Wear Volume & Lift Mascara, £21

COVER GIRL For your foundation, the overall effect you want to achieve is ‘dewy’, as this will help compensate for drier or rough textured skin that often occurs with ageing. Don’t try to paper over the cracks with a heavy formula, instead bring light and vitality to your face with a tinted moisturising balm. This lightweight alternative, will help even out skin tone, reduce wrinkles and restore radiance. Bobbi Brown Extra SPF Tinted Moisturising Balm, £36

FLUSH OF YOUTH Forget contouring, doing it yourself can be difficult and if you get it wrong there’s a risk you’ll look even older than you actually are. Opt instead for a cream blusher, with a dewy formulation. The sheer texture should melt into your foundation base, leaving you with a subtle healthy glow. Don’t be tempted to go overboard, as less is more for a younger, contemporary makeup finish. Max Factor Miracle Touch Creamy Blusher, £6.99

OLUME PUMP UP THE V As you age, you lose definition in your lips, so to appear more youthful, wear a lipstick that adds fullness. Dark colours do the opposite, making your lips look smaller, less plump, and less highlighted. Define your lips with a lip pencil - ensuring the edges are not too harsh - blending over the lips as a base, before applying a lip stain or balm. Your lips will look instantly plumper, smoother and luscious. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Balm Perfector, £18 URBAN FOX MAY 2015 21

Long in the

TOOTH

Many of us assume that losing our teeth as we get older is inevitable. But that’s simply not true says dental surgeon Dr Alif Moosajee, from Oakdale Dental. Here he shares with us the common causes and solutions for adult tooth loss Losing teeth is like losing anything, there’s usually a reason. For most adults, either their teeth become decayed which eventually results in their loss, or they have advanced gum disease which causes their teeth to mobilise and become so wobbly, that eventually they have to be removed. Modern dentistry focuses on trying to prevent these diseases – regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene, dietary advice etc. - but there is still a generation of people who have lost teeth and need help to restore their mouths properly, so that they can chew efficiently, and not have to modify their diets because they are unable to eat anything but the softest food. Dental studies support that people with full dentures are not as well-nourished as those who have their natural teeth, because they are unable to have a full and varied diet. There are also many people who are upset about their appearance because they show gaps when they smile or laugh. Therefore both functionality and aesthetic appearance are key to any restoration treatment undertaken.

If you have missing teeth, your dentist will discuss the options with you. One of these options is likely to be a ‘Dental Implant’, which is a prosthesis used to properly restore a missing tooth. A natural tooth has a ‘Crown’ (the bit we can see) and a ‘Root’, which firmly anchors the tooth into

Dental implants really can give people a new lease of life the jawbone. The dental implant works in exactly the same. It has the ‘implant’ itself which is anchored directly into the jawbone, acting like the tooth root, creating a robust platform that enables a false tooth to be secured onto it.

Dental implants can support single teeth and multiple teeth but can also be used to support full dentures. Lower conventional full dentures are notoriously difficult restorations for patients to tolerate and to function with, because there is very little in the lower jaw to stabilise them. This means that they can keep moving around, making chewing almost impossible. One viable solution is to place two implants in the lower jaw, with ‘studs’ on them instead of teeth. The studs can act like ‘popper buttons’ which fit into the underside of the lower denture. This allows the lower denture to click in and engage onto the implants, so that it can’t move when you are chewing. This means that you can start chewing hard foods like fresh fruit, vegetables and even steak! Dental implants really can give people a new lease of life, so do ask your dentist for further details and an assessment of your suitability, if you are unhappy with your teeth or dentures.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

10 Years

younger Getting older is unavoidable but it doesn’t have to be an uphill struggle, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts. Here she reveals what difference a decade can make to your health and fitness

30s

40s

Your 30s is the decade that flies by. Rewarding but tiring, it’s the time when you’re busy being a parent and/or building your career. This often means higher stress levels and less time for you.

Your 40s is the decade for you. Generally people are more relaxed and happy with themselves, children are getting older and you can make a little more time for you!

Stress

Muscle

Exercise is a great remedy for reducing stress and giving you energy. This doesn’t mean hours at the gym. Try to fit family activities in, plenty of walking and if you can get 40 minutes in 2-3 times a week make the exercise work for you, with 10 minutes of high intensity interval training and 30 minutes strength / resistance training.

Weight

Our 30s is generally when we start noticing we can’t get away with eating what we use to. Most of our growth and development has finished so we don’t need the same amount of calories. Try to eat healthier, less calorie dense foods. By making wise choices, eating a few less calories and keeping active, you should be able to balance your blood sugars and minimise any weight gains.

Don’t let muscle decline and the slowing effects on the metabolism defeat you. ‘Fit at Forty’ is all the rage so get out there and find your thing. Try different activities and sports, there will be something you love. Make sure that you include some strength training at least twice a week, to increase muscle and metabolism.

Hormones

During our 40s hormones have a lot to answer for. Dramatic changes and fluctuations in hormone levels can noticeably affect your ability to manage your weight. The key to balancing hormones is stabilising your blood sugars, so avoiding sugary foods, eating smaller regular meals and exercising, can go a long way to managing your hormones and keeping off the pounds.

50s Your 50s is the decade when you can start to feel those first aches and pains, and lifestyle changes focus more on health than aesthetics. But you can have both, so come on, set yourself a challenge!

Mobility

During our 50s changes in muscle strength, mobility and metabolism can start to show, but keeping active can help to slow down the process. Walk for 20 minutes a day and do some form of strength / resistance training twice a week to keep your metabolism, muscles and bones strong and healthy. Swimming is a great low impact sport to help get started without too much pressure on the body.

Digestion

As we get older our digestion system becomes less efficient and we can find it more difficult to process certain vitamins and minerals. Try increasing the amount of fibre you eat through vegetables and replacing white carbohydrates with wholegrain versions. A diet rich in fibre not only makes you regular, but can also help to control your cholesterol, blood sugars and appetite. URBAN FOX MAY 2015 25

young Eat Yourself

It’s impossible to turn back the clock, but can we slow it down a little? We check out 16 foods reported to have anti-aging properties

Kiwi

Rosemary

Salmon

Oysters

Eating kiwifruit can help maintain clear skin and promote healthy bones, as well as neutralising free radicals which are thought to lead to cancer and heart disease.

This fish is an anti-ageing remedy for your mental health. The omega-3 fatty acids improve your memory and brain function, as well as help to reduce inflammation.

Rich in phytochemicals, rosemary can increase the levels of ceramide in the skin, which helps to retain moisture and elasticity.

Full of zinc and selenium, these minerals serve as an antioxidant and help protect you against eye-related disease. They’re low in calories too.

Spices

Including ginger, turmeric, cayenne and cinnamon contain antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory effects and can help to balance blood sugar levels.

Oranges

Avocado

Just one a day can help you feel younger. Not only is this tasty fruit packed with vitamin C, but it also boasts skin-firming collagen.

An anti-ageing staple, avocado is an excellent source of vitamin E which helps to nourish the skin, as well as keeping your heart and eyesight healthy.

Watermelon

Carrots

Foods high in water content including cucumbers, watermelon and apples, are great for hydrating your skin, keeping the wrinkles at bay and leaving you looking fresh-faced.

Berries

Packed with antioxidants, these delicious snacks neutralise damaging free radicals and help the body manufacture collagen, leaving your skin firm and smooth.

Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains resveratorol and flavanols which promote circulation and can even protect against mild sun damage.

Potatoes

Of the sweet variety, contain beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. The great news is, our bodies turn beta-carotene into vitamin A, which helps smooth skin and ward off wrinkles.

Walnuts

One of the only nuts that contains a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help protect against high blood pressure and heart disease, and increase bone strength.

Crammed with phytonutrients and antioxidants, which guard against damaging free radicals. The beta carotene and lycopene found in carrots - and tomatoes - protects the skin from sun damage.

Grains

Whole grains offer a range of anti-ageing goodies including fibre, protein and iron. Avoid large quantities of simple carbs as they contain high sugar levels, which can lead to heart disease and obesity.

Kale

This is one of the best leafy greens to help combat ageing. It’s packed with antioxidants, omega 3, calcium and vitamins A, C & K, protecting the skin, liver, eyes and bones.

Water

Finally if you’re searching for the fountain of youth, look no further than plain water. Keeping hydrated will make you feel less tired and leave your skin looking fresh and younger.

YOU WEAR IT WELL

Most of the wine sold in the UK will be drunk within hours of purchase, so a detailed understanding of vintage is not as crucial as it use to be. But there are still a few things worth thinking about, says Hayley Anderton, wine specialist at Waitrose Oadby With any older bottle of wine, or bottle you want to keep, the first thing to consider is how it has, or is to be kept. For example there are wines which will age gracefully for decades, but only if they’re not exposed to full sunlight and fluctuating temperatures. If buying an older bottle for a special occasion, make sure it comes from a reputable specialist and do a bit of research on the year first. Vintage charts covering the more prestigious regions are easy enough to find online. They will indicate when something is over the hill, ready to drink, or still needs to be kept a little longer. As a rule of thumb the more expensive a wine, the better its ageing potential. Another factor to take into account is the grape - some age well, others don’t. But if you can identify a cupboard, wardrobe or cellar to store wine at an even, cool temperature and out of direct light (fridges are not suitable), there are plenty that will reward keeping. A non vintage (NV) champagne for example, will certainly improve over 6 to 12 months, as the ‘sharp’ edges soften and mellow. What’s more if you keep champagne for a long time, it develops a honeyed flavour. With red wines anything that has plenty of tannin - which is what causes that ‘grippy’ feel - similar to cold tea - on the sides of the tongue, will also

mellow after a while. There are white wines that age well too. To see what age does to wine try comparing an NV champagne with its vintage counterpart to see the difference between the consistent house style of one and the individual character of a specific year. Go for a good house champagne like Laurent Perrier NV at £37.99; and compare with the 2004 Vintage. At £46.99, is well worth the little bit extra. Undertake a similar tasting exercise with a Rioja. Baron de Ley’s Club Privado from 2012 at £10.99 is a great entry level wine but compare with their Gran Reserva from 2008 at £22.49 to see the difference a few more years in the cask can make. Finally, to try something really old, experiment with a 15 year old Madeira, an older tawny port - both Graham’s and Taylor’s do a good 20 year old - or for something really special find a bottle of Matusalem, a fantastically rich and lusciously sweet 30 year old sherry for around £19.

Dame Nothing like a Acting royalty Dame Judi Dench talks about her reluctance to retire and being in love at 80!

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

“We had no expectations about there being a second one,” says Dame Judi, talking about The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, sequel to the heart-warming 2011 original movie. “The first one was meant to be a one off; we had no idea it would be the success it was. But I think probably, it was quite refreshing for audiences to have a movie that was about people all our age, all struggling, trying to not fit into a slot and not be taken for granted. Doing something daring and defying what’s happening to them as they get older.” An expert on living life on her own terms, Dame Judi Dench exists in the upper echelons of British acting royalty. She’s enjoyed a 60 year career cartwheeling between stage and screen, is a favourite of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has received an incredible seven Oscar nominations. After joining the Bond franchise in 1995 as M - the only woman 007 will answer to - Dench has said goodbye to spies, villains and saving the world for now. She has no doubt that she will feel sad when the forthcoming 27th Bond instalment, Spectre, is released later in 2015, but Dench also has a typically pragmatic attitude towards her stint as M. “In the real world, I’d have been chucked out by MI6 by now!” she laughs. “The heads of MI6 seem to change quite regularly in reality, and no doubt I’d have a rather large pension by now, living in a big house…Although it’s been sad seeing all those great pictures from the Spectre set in the Swiss Alps, with Daniel [Craig] doing those great ski things, having all the fun…” she smiles. Alongside her time spent in the Bond franchise, Dench played feisty Mrs Lavinia Silver against Dustin Hoffman’s Mr Henry Hoppy in the New Year hit Esio Trot, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book, before travelling back to India for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel sequel.

The cast and characters of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, all old enough to claim their bus pass, prove that going grey doesn’t have to be boring. With gorgeous Jaipur as backdrop, Marigold delights as the pensioners navigate the rules of dating, the lure of travel, and the twists and turns that make a life well lived. Dench relished the chance to go back on set. “The whole experience of India changed me. The one thing I didn’t have to act about Evelyn was her passion for the country, and the people. I just was bewitched by it,” she says.

“In the real world, I’d have been chucked out by MI6 by now!” Starring as Evelyn Greenslade, Dench is undeniably box office gold, but she admits that as an actress, job security is always at the back of her mind. “Trevor Nunn once came to wish me luck on a first night and said, ‘why are you always in tears on a first night?’ I said, ‘It’s because I never think I’m going to be employed again.’ And although it’s been quite a jokey, light-hearted thing to say, in the depths of me, I still have that fear.” Fear may keep this actress on her toes, but not one for negativity, Dench sees regrets as learning experiences. “I never liked the Merchant of Venice,” she admits. “But I still did it. It’s the only Shakespeare play I don’t like but [her late husband] Michael and I did it the year after we were married. It turned from a play I didn’t like very much, into a play I was glad that I’d done.”

With years of experience in show business, Dench is surrounded by friends in the industry, making performing Marigold, a pleasurable task. “You don’t have to worry about making a fool of yourself because they’ve seen you making a fool of yourself for fifty years or so. Also, you know them very well as people, so you know the way and the pace they work.” “I never realised until I directed, that so much of that job is not just interpreting the play so much as the speeds and the manner in which an actor works. It’s like getting eleven horses over the line at the same time. Some of them want to wander off and eat a bit of grass and some of them charge ahead, but it’s trying to get them over at the same time. But if they’re friends, and we all are good friends in Marigold, there is a shorthand language between us as a cast, and as friends.” Dench has struggled with the eyesight problem macular degeneration in recent years, and has recently turned 80 years old. Despite that, she’s eliminated the ‘R’ word from her vocabulary – “I don’t use it, I don’t use ‘retire’.” She’s staunchly determined to continue working until she makes the decision to “pack it in” rather than being told she is too old to act. Away from the silver screen, Dench enjoyed a happy 30 years with her late husband, Michael Williams, who passed away in 2001 after a battle with lung cancer. The actress found love for a second time – much to her own, self-confessed surprise four years ago, with conservationist David Mills, after they bonded over animals at his Wildlife Centre in the Surrey countryside near both their homes. “It was a very, very gradual and grown up courtship. It’s absolutely wonderful because there’s somebody who makes me laugh.” Now at the start of her octogenarian years, both Dench’s personal and professional lives show that new beginnings abound at any age.

Far From the Madding Crowd (12A)

1hr 59mins Fri 1 - Thu 14 May at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk Following a re-release of John Schlesinger’s 1967 adaptation in March, Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterburg’s (The Hunt) new version of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel stars Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and Michael Sheen. Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan) inherits land from her late uncle, attracting the attentions of three very different suitors - a soldier, a mature bachelor and an honourable farmer. Determined to not be tied down by marriage, Bathsheba must fight to maintain her independence in a patriarchal society.

tume drama rgeous and sweeping cos go A d: ow Cr g din ad Far From the M

A gorgeous and sweeping costume drama, Vinterburg has taken Hardy’s timeless love story and breathed new life into it, bringing to bear a style influenced by world cinema and art-house intelligence. Managing to create three believable courtships is no mean feat, but Vinterburg and screenwriter David Nicholls succeed by tightly winding the lives of the three suitors around Bathsheba, creating a

sense of tension and claustrophobia that will be released with tragic consequences. Performances are superb across the board with Mulligan fierce and determined, Schoenaerts suitably strong and moody, whilst Tom Sturridge impresses as the conflicted young cavalryman Sergeant Francis “Frank” Troy. Perfect for spring evening viewing, it’s a romantic and enthralling film.

Goddesses Never Age

Women of a Dangerous Age

In a book that blends personal stories and practical exercises with the latest research on health and ageing, Dr. Northrup lays out the principles of ageless living. Explaining that the state of our health is dictated far more by our beliefs than by our biology, she works to shift our perceptions about getting older and show us what we are entitled to expect from our later years - no matter what our culture tries to teach us to the contrary. Bringing it all together in a 14-day ‘Ageless Goddess Programme’, this book offers tools and inspiration for creating a healthful and soulful new way of being, at any stage of life.

A warm novel about women, relationships and why it’s never too late to change. Lou is married to a man who no longer loves her. It’s time to move on, to begin a new business venture and to start her life over. To celebrate her new-found freedom, she travels to India, where, in front of the Taj Mahal, she befriends Ali. Ali is a serial mistress. But when she returns home, she discovers her latest lover is not the man she took him for. She too needs a new beginning. As Lou and Ali put their pasts behind them, they start to discover new possibilities for life and for love, until the shocking realisation that they have far more in common than they thought!

Based on an 1828 French ballet of the same name and inspired by choreographer Frederick Ashton’s love of the Suffolk countryside, La Fille mal garde is one of the choreographer’s most joyous creations. Laced with good humour, Ashton’s final full-length ballet incorporates some of his most virtuosic choreography to depict a charming, simple tale of boy meets girl. With elements of national folk dance incorporated throughout, from a Lancashire clog dance to a traditional maypole dance, this emphatically English work has remained a celebrated classic in The Royal Ballet’s repertory since its successful premiere in 1960.

Set during a heat wave on a rundown council estate, the story follows Jamie, a troubled teen whose dislike of football is reason enough for his classmates to bully him at every opportunity. Living with his single mum, Sandra, he finds himself infatuated with his next door neighbour and classmate, Ste. In this critically acclaimed award-winning play, writer Jonathan Harvey skilfully combines comedy with ardent drama.

They are the world’s most popular artists. The works of Cezanne, Monet, Degas and their compatriots fetch tens of millions of dollars. But just who were they really? Why and how did they paint? What lies behind their enduring appeal? To help answer these questions, the film has secured unique access to a major new exhibition focussing on the 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel, the outspoken champion of Impressionism. This energetic and revealing film will tell his remarkable story along with that of the Impressionists themselves.

UNDER THE

HAMMER

Age is something we all face, but none more so than in the world of art, antiques and collectables. We asked Will Gilding from Gildings Auctioneers, for some inside tips for the auction novice One of the most surprising things for the first time antiques buyer is the sheer diversity of what is on offer. If your tastes are broad then I’d recommend your first auction experience is a general sale. If you’re looking for something more specific, many auctions houses offer specialist sections or sales throughout the year. From 20th Century decorative arts to vintage costume and textiles, these auctions can hide some real treasures and curiosities. Buyers are required to register prior to bidding in the auction room. New buyers may also be asked for proof of identity and their address in order to complete their registration, always check what is needed before you attend. After you’ve registered you’ll be handed a numbered paddle. To let the auctioneer know you wish to raise the current bid, you can get his attention by raising your paddle. If your final bid wins the lot, the auctioneer will make a note of your paddle number for payment and collection purposes.

The thrill and excitement of the auction day can now be brought straight to your living room, office computer, or even local coffee shop - if they have WiFi - with the ability to bid on items wherever you are in the world. Although it’s great to browse the sale items in the comfort of your own home, I would always recommend where possible, popping in on viewing day to take a look in person, so you’re not left with any nasty surprises once you’ve got your purchase home. Remember to factor in auction costs. Typically you will need to pay a ‘buyer’s premium’ on top of the cost of the item you’ve bought. This is usually a percentage of the final hammer price. You should also take into consideration VAT, which is normally charged on the buyer’s premium, as well as other factors such as the cost of packaging and shipping if the item is too large to transport yourself.

It is always wise to insure any antiques you buy, but premiums needn’t be expensive if you have only a few items. Bear in mind that many standard contents policies will require items to be specified if they are worth more than £1,000. For particularly high-value items, insurers may require evidence of a valuation before they will offer cover in the first place. Finally everyone always asks me what to invest in or what is the “next big thing”? Unfortunately antiques and collectables are subject to the same rules as fashion and so if a look, or period, is ‘in’ one moment, it can just as easily be ‘out’ the next. Ultimately, there is no easy money maker out there. The most important advice I can give is, if you’re buying something for your home or jewellery to wear, whether it be Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Art Deco, post-War Britain or 21st Century, buy it for no other reason than you love it! HOMES & GARDENS

PIECE For me, the most liveable and inspiring rooms seem to have been assembled over time, combining old and new pieces in a variety of styles.

Start by embracing the age of your property and architecture of your room. Fixed elements such as mouldings, woodwork, flooring and fireplaces should reflect the period in which your home was built. You could take inspiration for styling your period home from three of my favourite eras. Then complete the look with simple, contemporary furnishings in clean structured shapes.

VICTORIAN

1930s

Colour rich hues of burgundy, plum, ruby, emerald, forest greens and navy will work well. You can also tone in gold, to give your look that edge of indulgence.

Colour schemes were very light, cream and ivory, as well as light pastel pinks, yellows and greens. By contrast soft furnishings featured dark greens and reds.

Floors choose mid-toned floorboards or parquet flooring with interesting large rugs. Or for authenticity, opt for a patterned carpet. Walls look out for reworked archive wallpaper designs as they offer a modern way of adding an historical element to your home. Consider designs similar to those of William Morris - damask and large floral, bird and animal motifs. Wallpaper from the skirting/ base board up to a dado rail or even higher to picture rail height. Décor: Victorian homes showed-off their wealth, so your room(s) should be elaborate, with pieces of stylish furniture to represent your Victorian styled concept.

PERIOD

One of the fastest routes to a boring interior is sticking to a single style or era, says Zoe Hubbard, interior designer at Maison Interiors. Here she shares her ideas for styling period properties

Floors the living room would often be carpeted and in larger homes, halls would feature parquet flooring. For the 1930s look in the kitchen, consider quality linoleum or quarry tiles. Walls painted in chalky colours up to picture rail height, contrasted with dark wood false beams on the ceiling. Décor mirrored surfaces were frequently used throughout the home, plus large mirrors framed in chrome or inlaid wood. Geometric motifs, highgloss finishes and exotic woods were also popular.

GEORGIAN Colour pea green, sky blue, soft grey, dusky pink and a flat white or stone. Floors bare floorboards covered with oriental rugs. Grander houses of this period had stone or marble floors in pale colours; you might consider a keystone pattern. Walls panelled up to dado height and painted/wallpapered above. Look for simple repeat patterns in wallpaper such as trefoils. Some of the original designs are still being produced today. Wallpaper was typically imported from the Far East, so anything with an oriental feel, would be in keeping. Décor predominantly subtle and soft. Furniture with curved legs, carved claw feet, and elegant lines; plus heavy tassel curtains and lighting adorned with crystals. URBAN FOX MAY 2015 45

Tips from the

HOMES & GARDENS

POTTING SHED A little gardening know-how from Anna Barker at Lush Garden Design

My parents love their garden, but the work is getting a bit too much for them. Is there anything I can do to make things easier? There are many ways to take the toil out of gardening. A simple solution to make life easier for your parents, without taking away any of their enjoyment, is to remove some of the bending tasks by installing some raised planting beds. These can be purchased in kit form from garden centres, or it’s relatively easy to build them yourself. Raised beds make tending plants, weeding and watering a much more comfortable job. Raised planting has the added benefit of creating better drainage, and some plants, like Clematis and Sweet Peas, prefer the deeper root run that raised beds provide. Any containers – pots, troughs and hanging baskets – are easier to manage than planting in a standard border.

You can keep on top of weeding and pests, change the displays more often and move them around. Hanging baskets bring your garden right up to your door, and they can be fitted to pulley systems to make tending them a breeze. One of the most labour intensive areas of a garden is often the lawn. These days you can buy robotic lawnmowers, but be warned: starting at about £800, they’re not cheap! Maybe a more cost effective alternative would be for you to offer to cut their lawn instead!

I have just moved into a house with a very lovely established garden, but I am a novice gardener. I am nervous of ruining it – should I just get someone in to do it? Don’t be daunted, as it’s never too late to learn a new skill and there is always something new to learn in gardening. If your garden is huge or full of large shrubs and trees, then you could approach a local gardener. Most garden plants, however, can be looked after very easily yourself. The first thing I suggest you do when you move into a new house and garden is to wait. A lot of gardening is about patience! Observe what comes up over the course of a year and you’ll then notice which areas might need attention. Look out for periods when there are gaps in flowering, for example, then you’ll be able to plan for a better garden next year. Bulbs are good for

the novice because they look after themselves. Plant Narcissus and Tulips in October and forget them until you get a great show in the spring. Plants naturally want to grow, so keep them watered and fed and you won’t go far wrong. Herbaceous flowering plants are generally easy to maintain, really needing only sun and well-drained soil. They flower for the spring or summer and hibernate underground through winter, returning the following year. All you need to do in early spring is cut down the dead leaves, stems and spent flower heads and feed the plants with garden compost or well-rotted farmyard manure. Then you should be rewarded with a beautiful colourful garden.

Age

Concern? When I was offered a plum job ten years ago, a well-meaning (I think) friend dampened my celebrations somewhat when she said “You do know you’re too old to work there don’t you?”! Worried that she might be on to something, I decided I might never be offered the opportunity again so took the job. Reader I had one of the best years of my career. I was reminded of that episode recently, when a business I know well and have worked with for some time wouldn’t consider me for a senior role because they were “looking for someone young”. I’m not ready to give up on my goals and ambitions yet. So to counter this (let’s not forget illegal) discrimination, I’m fighting back. First I’ve heeded advice to drop the term O’Levels, together with any other “clues” to my, ahem, maturity from my CV. And to bolster my shaken confidence, I’m looking for a role model. Just like I did at the beginning of my career. But this time round, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl won’t cut it. I need a vital, vibrant, visible woman who has gone on to great things post-menopause. So next time I’m being written off, I’ll think “what would she do?” and challenge ageist assumptions.

r! t wither he Age canno

Here are a few “big sisters” I’ll be trialling for the role of virtual mentor:

Kirsty Walk (60) For making “veteran” a badge of honour; paving the way for the likes of Emily Maitlis; making it OK to be a feminist and fashionable. She says: “Why would a desire to feel good about yourself be at odds with feminism? Look at Simone de Beauvoir!” If you don’t know who she is, Google.

Baroness Prashar CBE (66) For her commitment to equality of opportunity and eliminating elitism; shaping the future of De Montfort University as Chancellor (2001-2006); contributing to a 50% increase in the number of women in the High Court. She says “the legal profession itself does not give women and minorities the same chance to shine.” Well at least it’s not ageist.

Hillary Clinton (70) For her early refusal to change her image; dignity in the face of her husband’s idiocy with that woman; withering wit as she bids to become the most powerful woman on the planet. She says: “If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle.” That’s power.

Vivienne Westwood DBE (74) For building a successful business her way; being a Dame her way; dating a man more than twenty years her junior; not caring what we think. She says: “I don’t have faith in young people any more. I don’t waste time trying to communicate with them.” Touché!

Do you have a better role model? We’d love to hear about her. Join the conversation on Facebook and share your experiences and tips for surviving as an older woman in the workplace with Urban Fox readers.

FAIRMONT BANFF SPRINGS

FAIRMONT BANFF SPRINGS

Alberta The Grande Dame of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and over 125 years old, the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel has a Scottish baronial style and regal opulence and elegance that’s difficult to match. Approximately half a mile from Banff centre and close to Bow River Falls, this famous resort, with esteemed guests including Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe, King George VI and our Editor - who spent her honeymoon here - offers tennis, bowling, hiking and mountain biking, indoor and outdoor pools, and a spa with mineral pools. GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE

EREMITO

Umbria Built stone by stone, it took four years to create the Eremito hotel. Adhering to the ancient art of Italian masonry from the 13th Century, 130,000 stones were used in its construction. Eremito meaning ‘hermit’ focusses on ‘old’ luxury - time, peace, and contemplative spaces- which has resulted in an interior style where natural materials take precedence, furnishings are few but comfortable, and where a reliance on candlelight creates the right atmosphere. Taking inspiration from Umbrian monasteries, the design can best be described as ‘Franciscan minimalism’. For prices and availability go to designhotels.com

GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE

Yangon A romantic, colonial-style mansion dating to the 1920s, Belmond Governor’s Residence is redolent of the days when it was home to the ruler of Myanmar’s southern states. With its fan-cooled verandas and teak armchairs, this delightful hotel in the elegant Embassy Quarter of Yangon, conjures up a bygone era while offering every modern pleasure. Set in a verdant garden dotted with lotus pools, the hotel is truly magical at the end of a day spent visiting the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda. Dinner is served alfresco in the balmy evening air by lantern-light, as tropical fragrances fill the air. For more information visit belmond.com URBAN FOX MAY 2015 63

Dog walking in the beautiful couhire ntryside

From banking to fostering, Claire Jose tells us how a career change can make a real difference Born and educated in Leicestershire, I left school at 16 and went to work for a high street bank. I travelled extensively, meeting new people and honing my knowledge of the banking sector and learning how to get the best from people. Over time, I was promoted through the ranks to Private Banking Centre Manager with responsibility for 60+ advisers over two sites in Nottingham and Birmingham. But after 32 years in the business, banking was changing, becoming more pressurised and I had stresses in my personal life too. Mum had been ill throughout my childhood with cancer and MS and now my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I think I just burned-out. I wanted more satisfaction in my life and to give something back. My family, including a teenage son, needed me, so I was looking for a new challenge in which I could use my existing skills and also be at home. Whilst at the bank, I trained as a professional make-up artist and before leaving, started my own business Claire of Charnwood, specialising in wedding and event makeup, which I still run. But then one day I heard a broadcast from By the Bridge fostering organisation asking for people to become foster parents and decided to find out more. I liked what I heard and was subsequently recruited to become a “therapeutic” foster parent, a role that is based on therapeutic re-parenting, to aid the healing of trauma in abused and neglected children. Issues a foster parent can expect to face include self-harm, behavioural, development and social challenges, as well as low self-esteem, but I was a bit of a wildchild growing up - much to the distress of my parents - so my

own life experiences, have helped me to identify with a whole range of teenage issues. Nothing shocks me, you just have to show your support and be there for them, no matter what!

It’s coming up to two years since my beautiful foster daughter joined the family. My son Callum (now 18) struggled at first, as he’d always had the best in life, private education etc. The proudest moment was when he came into my foster daughter’s room when I was in there and said to her “If you need to talk, then you know where I am.” Although it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride, all you need to do, is show someone that you really care and are there for them. By the Bridge have been brilliant, guiding me all of the way, I’ve never looked back! For anyone interested in becoming a foster parent but not sure if they have the right skill-set, simply list the skills you have attained from your personal and professional life – relationship management, problem solving, organisational skills etc. - you’ll be surprised at how many are transferrable. Then attend a local recruitment meeting or drop-in session to find out more. With over 51,000 in foster care, for me the recruitment of quality foster parents is key to helping this country grow and prosper.
