AN UNQUOWA TRADITION

A WORD FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

The lights of Winter Festival have finally come back on! On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the stained glass windows were once again hung and the banners arrived secretly in the night not long after. Our last live Winter Festival was two years ago, before the pandemic. That year, on the first day back from Thanksgiving break, we had an unexpected early dismissal due to the threat of heavy snow. The snow did not arrive, but the early dismissal gave Mr. Mitchell and his team, our resident Winterfest “Fairies,” a day to hang the Winterfest banners and install the stained glass windows that are the first step in transforming our gym into a medieval castle. And so it was that a similar transformation began just after Thanksgiving this year.

I love watching our kids respond to this surprise transformation and I love watching those first few rough rehearsals - kids coming to the gym with lyrics and harmonies in their heads and eager to sing them while adding the choreography that Mrs. Kirk has designed to bring the piece to life. It’s the first attempt for dozens of kids to go through tying music to movement. I always watch these rehearsals, knowing that every time our kids do a run-through, they will get one step closer to the powerful synchronicity they’ll achieve during the final Thursday evening performance of Winter Festival. I watch it build every year, and the process is heartbreakingly beautiful in its certainty. Each year I feel so lucky to witness not just the end result but the magical process that leads up to it.

Winter Festival is always an amazing event because it’s the culmination of a month of learning and mastering songs, dances and lines that leads to an evening of every student “nailing it” in a way that is magical. Each year I am ever more grateful to our performing arts staff: Performing Arts Department chair, Megan Kirk, who wrote the script and designed the choreography specifically with our kids in mind, and Jennifer Kenny, who returned this year to join forces with Megan, David Coe who orchestrates live music and leads his talented students in playing it, to Lloyd Mitchell who trains a tech crew who keeps the lights and sound professionally on cue, to our chefs who, in typical years provide a post-show Royal dessert to rival all royal banquets. This COVID year they will send students home with festive goodie bags for afternoon snacking before our evening performance. A host of others add the touches that make this night beyond belief. Our entire school and returning alums who join in the closing traditional songs at the program’s end bond over its performance each year.

This year more than ever we need a little magic in our lives, and we can all benefit from building new memories, laughing with friends and experiencing the pride of creating a performance that provides both magic and memories for ourselves, our families and our friends. May you enjoy the tale we spin for you tonight, may you sing along if the spirit moves you, and may you and your family have a New Year filled with joy and peace.

All the best, Sharon Lauer

WINTERFEST 2021

When Mr. and Mrs. Pevensie called their children into the living room to tell them that their mother had accepted a new position and the family would be relocating, little did they know they would soon be going on an adventure of a lifetime. While Mr. and Mrs. Pevensie were searching for a new home, the children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy and Kate were to stay with their Aunt and Uncle, whom they barely knew! When they arrived at this house in the woods they were not excited about the situation they were now in. To try and make the most of it, they decided to play a game of hide and seek. Lucy and Kate thought that the wardrobe would be a perfect hiding place. They walked in, and right THROUGH the wardrobe, to the Land of Unquowa! When they returned home, after being in Unquowa for hours, it was as if no time had passed and no one believed them! What will happen next? Join us on this tale of a magical land being controlled by a horrible white witch, a family who learns the importance of being there for one another, Kings and Queens trying to restore love, harmony and balance to their land, and a brother who comes to realize he needs to change his ways.

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTORS

I could not be more excited for this year’s Winterfest! Last year, during the pandemic, the students did an amazing job putting together “Springfest the Movie”. It was a remarkable experience and we were all so thankful we were able to have a “winterfest” even if it was not a live event. The movie was a smashing success, but there was one ingredient to a true winterfest that was missing. The LIVE audience! I am so thrilled we are able to do this show in person this year! The students have been working so very hard on all of the skills you will see before you in this wonderful show. From working on developing their characters, to memorizing lines, song and choreography, perfecting their craft on their instruments, learning every aspect of the show’s lighting, sound, and set placement, and so much more! I could not be more proud of how these students have come together as a community of performers to put together this unforgettable show. Thank you to everyone who has put in so much time and energy into this year’s Winterfest!

What a fantastic time of year this is at Unquowa! It’s so great to see all of the students singing, dancing and laughing together, and the smiles from teachers as they walk through the gym with a rehearsal in progress. No less remarkable is the physical transformation of the school as thrones, banners and castles begin to appear seemingly out of nowhere. Winterfest 2021 promises to be a great one as we return to live performance (although I did enjoy “Springfest The Movie” last year!). I’m especially excited for the music this year as we have an incredible variety of wonderful songs and the talented cast members and musicians to make them come to life! Not to mention the introduction of our Upper School Percussion Ensemble! Special thanks to Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Kenney, Mr. Mitchell and all involved in this production. Enjoy the show!

All About Our Cast and Crew

ISABEL ALFAGEME (TechCrew co-director and Instrumental) This is Isabel’s fourth Winterfest! Last year, she was a member of the instrumental group during Springfest, but this year she is playing a major role behind the scenes. While Isabel loves performing for an audience, she is looking forward to making sure the show runs smoothly. Like many of us, Isabel looks forward to the Candle Dance, which is her favorite Winterfest tradition. In her free time, Isabel loves reading and skiing, though we recommend she avoid trying them both at the same time! Keep your eyes on the slopes!!! Watch out for tha---

ELIJAH AMES (Mr. Pevensie/Shay/Ensemble) Eli is gearing up for his third Winterfest! Last year, he was Announcer #2, but is super excited to… announce… that he is playing Mr. Pevensie in this year’s production! Eli is most interested in the theme of this year’s show and all of the magic that it brings to the holiday season. His favorite part of Winterfest is the dances, and he can’t wait to show off his moves! When away from the dance floor, Eli’s favorite thing to do remains karate. Let’s kick this year’s show off right!

MATTHEW ANTO (Instrumentalist) Matthew is getting ready for his sixth Winterfest (the first one he saw as an audience member)! This year, Matthew is continuing as a bassist in our instrumental group. Outside of school, he really enjoys playing bass, and is glad for the opportunity to display his mad finger-picking skills to the entire Unquowa community. Matthew’s favorite part of Winterfest are all of the traditions that happen each year, and he can’t wait for it all to start!

MATTEO BREBBIA (Triston/Ensemble/Instrumentalist) London-born Matteo is excited to turn in his Stick Dancer dowels in exchange for the guitar in his third Winterfest. He’s also looking forward to playing Triston and debuting his first lines in a show. Matteo always enjoys the thrill of the production, and eagerly anticipates the confetti and streamers at the close of the evening. A true water sign, this Cancerian loves all things ocean: paddleboarding, sailing, swimming, and hanging at the shore. When he’s not bummin’ it at the beach, Matteo’s strummin’ his guitar and fencin’ with Fairfield Fencing Academy. En garde!

JULIA BRODER (Tech Crew) This is Julia’s first true Winterfest. While she had a wonderful experience playing Sammy with our first Springfest last year, Julia is looking forward to the full Winterfest experience. This year, Julia is involved as a member of the tech crew at the front of the house, managing sound for the production. She is glad to be able to help make the show come together and to see it all happen from one of the best seats in the house. When she isn’t mixing sound, Julia is often playing sports afterschool, or you can find her baking (a true passion)! Her work with the oven is off the tarts!

MARIANELA CARDONA (Susan) This is Marianela’s tenth Winterfest! At this point, Marianela is a pro who knows how Winterfest works and loves every bit of it. She especially loves the fact that Winterfest allows everyone to perform and express themselves. This year she will play the part of Susan. Outside of school, Marianela enjoys listening to music and singing (which fits with her general Winterfest enthusiasm) as well as painting. Marianela is most looking forward to the traditional songs and dances at the end of the show and, of course, the confetti. Let’s go, Marianela!

PIPER CARRILLO-FOOTE (Everly/Ensemble) Piper is looking forward to her third Winterfest, and is thrilled to play Everly. Each year she looks forward to the confetti blast at the end of the show. When she’s not performing, Piper enjoys cooking and spending time with her family and dogs. Fun fact about Piper? She loves babies! We bet you’ll go GAGA over her performance this year!

DAVID COE (Instrumental Director) David is the Instrumental Music instructor at Unquowa. He loves being part of the Unquowa community as everyone comes together to create this magical event. He especially looks forward to working with the amazing and talented Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Kenney and Mr. Mitchell!

HENRY COOPER (Instrumentalist) This is Henry’s ninth Winterfest! This year Henry will tickle the ivories as he plays the piano for the instrumentalists. Henry is especially excited to play “Stir It Up”. Henry’s favorite part of Winterfest is the evening production and the

16

feast afterward. Outside of school, you can (try to) catch Henry on the basketball court or playing the piano.feast afterward.

JAMES DI BONAVENTURA (Instrumentalist) An old pro, this is James’s eighth Winterfest! This year, James is looking forward to seeing his friends act as he plays music for them. He always looks forward to the big confetti explosion at the end of the evening performance. A truly talented musician, James is also a LEGO master - in his free time he loves creating complex structures with lightning speed. We can’t wait to see the musical foundation James builds as an instrumentalist in this year’s show!

TOM DICORPO (Set Design) Mr. Tom joins us for his first Winterfest here at Unquowa. He has taken the reins for many of the “behind the scenes” projects and activities from set decoration with giant ladders to creating and painting props to even making it snow! Mr. Tom is always available to pitch in wherever needed to ensure the show is a success.

OWEN EPSTEIN (Instrumentalist) Owen can’t wait for his debut performance in this year’s Winterfest! He’s excited to experience all the magic that it brings, and provide musical accompaniment to the show. Despite this being his first year at Unquowa, Owen has settled right into Gator Life. In his free time, he loves playing soccer and cooking. Congratulations on your first Winterfest, Owen!

MIRAN FALK (Tech Crew) This is Miran’s third Winterfest, and while it was nice to act in a full part last year, Miran is looking forward to being a part of the tech crew. Specifically, they are super excited to be involved with lights from the front of the house. For about a year or so, Miran has been very interested in trying their hand at the behindthe-scenes work, and has admired all of the effort that goes into putting a production together. When they aren’t shining lights on their friends and colleagues, you can find Miran avidly participating in Unquowa’s own Dungeons & Dragons Club, reading a variety of books (especially graphic novels), and drawing. Whenever the show begins, Miran uses their PERFORMANCE SKILL (it’s a D&D thing) to inspire their colleagues to do their very best!

CHARLES FARINELLA (Knight Zebadiah/Gordon/Ensemble) This year will mark Charles’s third Winterfest at Unquowa. During last year’s performance, Charles made his acting debut and it stuck! This year, Charles is excited to perform as Knight Zebadiah and Gordon, as well as as a member of the ensemble. Like others, Charles’s favorite part of Winterfest is the finale - the very end of the very last show. When he isn’t gracing the stage with his presence, Charles is often (and we mean OFTEN) on the baseball field, swinging strong and making big plays. He is also a HUGE fan of Dungeons & Dragons and loves playing his half-orc barbarian, dragonborn wizard, or aaracockra monk. Watch out! Whether he’s on stage, on the field, or at the gaming table, Charles is a force to be reckoned with! ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!

JACK FERRANDINO (Instrumentalist) After rocking his inaugural show as a Stick Dancer and Tree last year, Jack is excited for his second Winterfest. He can’t wait to put his musical talents on display as he strums, drums, and plucks to the beat as an Instrumentalist. When he’s not jamming at Unquowa, Jack enjoys making music at the School of Rock and playing Roblox, Minecraft, and other video games. He loves the anticipation that builds before a show, and he’s looking forward to seeing how all the parts come together in this year’s Winterfest!

CLARISSA FLEMING (Instrumentalist) This is Clarissa’s second true Winterfest. During her first Winterfest she was a stick dancer and this year she explodes onto the scene as an instrumentalist playing the Ukulele and drums. She is really excited about seeing the entire show come together from beginning to end and believes it will really be an amazing experience. In her spare time, Clarissa loves to spend time with friends and her swim team. We know Clarissa will make a big splash in the Winterfest.

TANYSE FLOYD (Queen Bethany/Ensemble) This year Tanyse has the distinction of playing Queen Bethany. This means that this is Tanyse’s eighth Winterfest. The last time Tanyse participated in Winterfest proper, she was a stick dancer, but this year she is looking forward to her place on the royal court. In addition, you can catch her as a member of the Ensemble as she will participate in a group dance and maybe some other surprises. In her

17

spare time Tanyse likes to be a social butterfly and spend time with her family and friends, very fitting for a queen!

MICHAEL FRASCATORE (King Tristan/Ensemble) This is Michael’s EIGHTH Winterfest at Unquowa, and as one of the students in 7th Grade with the most performances under his belt, he gets to be ROYALTY. Michael is excited to perform as King Tristan and as a member of the ensemble, but he’s also really looking forward to the confetti at the very end of Thursday night. When he isn’t busy serving the citizens of the Kingdom of Unquowa, you can find Michael slapping pucks and skating fast. Unless, of course, he’s behind the controller of his favorite video game. Well, Michael? We say GAME ON! We can’t wait to see you on stage!

REBECCA FROST (Zara/Ensemble) Winterfest this year will mark FIVE for Rebecca. Last year, Rebecca performed as Tammy for Unquowa’s first-ever Springfest. This year, Rebecca is delighted to play Zara. She loves to act, and is excited to perform for everyone this year. When she isn’t lighting up the stage with her performances at the Royal Court of Unquowa, Rebeca can be found on other courts as well. Specifically, she spins her racquet on the tennis court and makes layups all day long on the basketball court. We are so excited to see Rebecca shine onstage and score big for Unquowa’s epic Winterfest return.

ASHER GARRETT (Tech Crew) Asher is trading in his Stick Dance batons for a backstage pass in his second Winterfest performance. As part of our Tech Crew, Asher is looking forward to supporting and watching his classmates perform. Like many, he’s excited for the grand finale after the traditional dances. In his free time, Asher enjoys hanging with his friends and showing off his water skiing skills! Hold on tight for a great show!

BRYAEL GONZALEZ (Christina/Ensemble) Bryael’s cooking up an incredible performance this year as Christina, a royal court member, as well as one of River’s Dryad friends in her seventh Winterfest. She’s looking forward to saying her lines and watching the confetti fly! When she’s not at school, Bryael loves to sing, draw, play with her sisters, and bake all sorts of pastries. Who knows - maybe in a few years, Bryael will be the one whipping up our traditional Winterfest dessert feast!

ELLIOTT GOODMAN (Kate/Ensemble) This year marks Elliott’s FOURTH Winterfest! Both a natural performer and a skilled dancer, Elliott enjoys the spotlight and crafting stellar performances for everyone to see. She loves being able to express herself, connect with her friends and peers, and see the new talented students in the younger grades have the same opportunities she has enjoyed. When she isn’t onstage at Unquowa she is… onstage elsewhere! Elliott’s passion is dancing, as she shared in her 8th Grade Speech, and you can find her dancing in numbers all year long. Break a leg, Elliott!

ANNIE HIGGINS (Talia/Ensemble) Annie is thrilled to bring her energy and talents to her second Winterfest. She can’t wait to perform as Talia, and to participate in the festive traditional dances at the end of the show. One of 7 kids, Annie likes spending time with family, playing field hockey, and cheerleading. Goooooo, Annie!

NATHAN HOWE (King Aslan/Ensemble) This is Nathan’s ninth Winterfest and he will grace the stage in the role of King Aslan. In his last performance, Nathan was a part of the “evil group”, but is looking forward to having a “center stage” role this year. He really likes the castle scene and the fact that because there are so many people that are a part of it that it seems “more alive”! In his spare time Nathan loves to play hockey with his team where he plays the position of wing, but will not be in the wings this Winterfest.

NOLAN HOWE (Instrumentalist) This year marks Nolan’s NINTH (!!!) Winterfest production. He has had such a great time as an instrumentalist for the last two years that he decided to stick around and do it one last time. Nolan is beyond thrilled to return to an inperson performance, and is excited to show off his progress on the guitar. When he’s away from the stage, you can find Nolan on the ice as often as possible as hockey remains his strongest passion. We agree with Nolan - we can’t wait to see his virtuoso strumming skills live and in-person!

MICHAEL JONES (Ginarrbrik/Ensemble) This year marks eleven (!!!) Winterfests for Michael. Just as in years past, Michael looks forward to the castle walls in the gym going up in the last few weeks before the big day. His favorite part is the atmosphere that these changes bring to the school. After retiring from the throne, Michael is glad to return to

18

acting! When he isn’t preparing for Winterfest, or working hard in the classroom, you can always find Michael on the golf course, constantly improving his competitive game. If we can use a bit of golf jargon, we have one thing to say to Michael as he gets ready for his last Winterfest: Light the candle!

KYRA KARAYIANNIS (Liza/Ensemble) A competitive figure skater, Kyra glided into her first year here at Unquowa. She can’t wait to see the gym totally transform into the Winterfest set, and thinks her role as Liza is super cool. Kyra is looking forward to singing and acting in her inaugural production. Kyra always gives her all to anything she does - we know she’ll shine in her big debut!

RYAN KAVANAUGH (Instrumentalist) This will be Ryan’s fifth WInterfest. Most recently he was a Stick Dancer, and this year he will be an Instrumentalist. A talented musician, Ryan plays several instruments. Ryan’s favorite part of the show is when the confetti falls and the kids run around and send it back into the air. He’s excited to see this year’s banner reveal. Playing music is just one of Ryan’s many talents. He loves to draw, play football, and ski, and is known for his creative mind. In his free time, Ryan also likes to play Dungeons and Dragons, do tricks with diabolo and devil sticks, and read fantasy books. A real Renaissance man, Ryan is ready to kick off Winterfest on the right note!

DEVIN KELLY (Instrumentalist)This is Devin’s fourth year at Unquowa, and his third Winterfest. He is keeping with his years-long tradition of performing as an instrumentalist, but has recently realized he has a passion for tech crew and plans to figure that out in time for the spring performances. Devin’s favorite part of Winterfest is the “winter” part and he can’t wait for the weather to turn cold. When he’s not drumming and strumming, Devin is an avid tennis player and you can find him on the court at all hours, serving up a competitive game!

JENNIFER KENNY (Drama Coach) This is Jennifer’s second Winterfest, and she’s thrilled to be back working with Mrs. Kirk and the Unquowa community on this exciting production! Jennifer is a drama teacher and acting coach and is also the Owner and Executive Director of Fairfield Performing Arts Studio (FPAS) located at 1899 Bronson Road in Fairfield. FPAS was established in 2008. Jennifer is the primary instructor and director for all studio classes, camps, and productions. Jennifer is a professional actor, trained at Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City, and received a BFA in theater from the University of Connecticut. Jennifer has a strong passion for inspiring students of all ages, connecting with people, and bringing out the many dimensions of a character within an actor. Jennifer’s love and passion for people and of the performing arts is what motivates her to inspire her students to be their best selves both on the stage and off!

LUKAS KERAS (Instrumentalist) This will be Lukas’s fourth Winterfest. As he did last time, Lukas will entertain the audience with his amazing guitar and bass playing skills. He is most looking forward to learning the songs he will play and he loves the fact that they are sometimes challenging. In case you haven’t seen him folding paper around the school or catching butterflies and dragonflies at recess, Lukas is both an avid origamist (someone who practices origami) and a budding entomologist (someone who loves to catch and raise insects). Lukas is certainly a man of many interests!

JAMES KHATANA (Instrumentalist) This year’s Winterfest will be a new one for James. As a new student, James hasn’t ever had the pleasure of performing for the whole gathered Unquowa community, and those of us who have been here know that he’s in for a wild ride! Seventh grade is the perfect time for James to come on board, especially given his penchant for music! He’s excited to be an instrumentalist this year and to play for everyone and to make the magic of Winterfest happen with the strum of his ukelele. When he’s not performing onstage, you can find James spending quality time with his friends, playing outside regardless of the weather, and, during the summer, enjoying his time by, in, and on the river his family goes to. We’re excited for James’ first-ever Winterfest, and we know he’s going to ROCK it!

ETHAN KIRK (Kevin, Instrumentalist/Ensemble) This will be Ethan’s eighth Winterfest and he will be playing the role of Kevin as well as being a part of the Instrumentalists and Ensemble. Figures that Ethan would have the role of Kevin, a guitarist who loves to work on his guitar playing, as it is rare to see Ethan without a guitar in his hands when he has a

19

spare minute in school. He will also be singing as part of the Ensemble. Ethan’s favorite part of Winterfest is the fact that everyone can enjoy being a part of the production and use their talents to put the show together. As could be expected, Ethan likes to play guitar in his spare time and also play video games. Rock on, Ethan!

MEGAN KIRK (Director/Musical Director/Choreographer/) Megan is so proud of this year’s Winterfest! Writing the script this year was so much fun, especially knowing we would be performing the show live! Hooray! Winterfest is one of Megan’s favorite times of the year. All year, Megan’s students, from PK4 through 8th grade, have been working extremely hard in class on their vocal, dramatic, and dancing skills. It fills her heart with joy to see all of their hard work payoff in such an amazing show! Winterfest holds such a special place in Megan’s life as it brings the whole Unquowa community together, celebrating each and every student. She would like to thank all of the students, faculty, staff, parents, and especially the Performing Arts Team for making this show a huge success.

ROBERT KRUEGER (Instrumentalist) This will be Robert’s fifth Winterfest production! Robert will be keeping the beat on the djembe (African drum) as well as playing the guitar. He is looking forward to “Stirring it Up” with the other instrumentalists. Off the stage, Robert is an enormous sports enthusiast and spends most of his free time playing (or watching) hockey, lacrosse, and football. When he isn’t on the field, you can find him playing video games, eating, and spending quality time with his family

TESS KURZENBERGER (Instrumentalist) This is Tess’s first-ever Winterfest! As an avid musician (even though they just started playing this year), Tess is a perfect addition to the instrumental portion of the show. They are playing both bass and guitar this year, and can’t wait to show off their musical skills onstage! When they aren’t performing at Unquowa, Tess enjoys playing their electric guitar at home, writing and contributing to Unquowa’s own Pen & Paper, and drawing. We’re looking forward to Tess’s Winterfest debut and are excited for them to play our faces off! FREEBIRD!

LARA KUSCHE (Heidi/Ensemble) This will be Lara’s FIFTH Winterfest at Unquowa! Last year, Lara played an evil minion in Divoc’s crew in Unquowa’s first-ever Springfest (Winterfest transplanted), and had a great time. This year, she is looking forward to playing Heidi, but her FAVORITE part of Winterfest is getting a chance to see everyone else perform. When she isn’t scoping out the next Broadway star (or making a case for herself to be one), Lara is reading. A lot. All of the time, in fact. Reading, reading, reading. And we love it (in fact, most of us do the same)! When she’s able to peel her attention away from her books, Lara deeply enjoys horseback riding. We’re excited to see what Lara brings to the stage this year!

TEDDY KUSHEL (Tech Crew) Teddy will be participating in his fourth Winterfest and this is his second year as being a part of the Tech Crew. He will be setting the stage and directing others to do so as well. Teddy’s favorite part about Winterfest is the feast at the end of the show and spending time with everyone in celebration at the end. In his spare time Teddy likes to play soccer, maybe play a little soccer and, oh yes, play soccer. He likes to watch soccer as well! Teddy’s goal for this Winterfest season is to finish Winterfest and maybe play some soccer!

WYATT LIEBERMAN (Tech Crew/Instrumentalist) Wyatt is excited for his 7th Winterfest, and is looking forward to his first year on Tech Crew! He loves watching the gym slowly transform throughout December into a festive winter castle, and eagerly awaits the actors’ performances each year. A man of many interests, Wyatt loves Japanese flip phones, computers, Nicki Minaj, and cosplaying anime characters.

DEBBIE LEIDLEIN (Tech Crew/Gatorbill Biographer) When December rolls around and the excitement for Winterfest begins to build, Unquowa turns into a truly magical place. This will be her twentieth Winterfest and she has seen the celebration evolve throughout the years, but one thing always remains the same - the fact that Winterfest is truly a magical event! It is all inclusive and celebrates everyone’s talents. I can’t wait for the stage to be lit!

SARAH MAXIMIN (Tech Crew) Sarah has participated in seven Winterfests to date and is thrilled to be part of the Tech Crew this year. She is excited to be part of the behind the scenes magic that helps to pull the show together and give the audience a wonderful experience.

20

Sarah is most excited to see how the show comes together, carefully weaving in all of the stories and students at every grade level.

ZEYLAH MCDOWELL (Instrumentalist) Zeylah is so excited to be part of her FIRST Winterfest! She has heard her classmates talking about it for weeks and can’t wait to experience it herself. She will be part of the Instrumental Group this year and is looking forward to showing off all of her skills, having practiced for weeks during the rehearsals. When Zeylah has free time, she loves to take photos and draw. Often seen on campus with a sketch pad, her classmates are in awe of her talent!

LLOYD MITCHELL (Tech Crew Director) Mr. Mitchell is thrilled to direct his 14th tech crew. This is his 15th Winterfest. Mr. Mitchell has worked on many productions both on stage as an actor and behind the scenes in a variety of roles including sound, light and stage direction. He loves orchestrating the surprises of Winterfest each year! He is looking forward to this year’s production and another flawless performance in Tech Crew’s new production booth!

MADISON MITCHELL (Tech Crew) As Madison begins her ELEVENTH (!!!) Winterfest, she is excited about returning backstage where she keeps everything running. She is most excited about the VERY END of the show, but doesn’t want to ruin the surprise for any new students by sharing it here. Suffice it to say - it’ll be a BANG! Outside of keeping Winterfest secrets, Madison enjoys spending time with her friends and helping them run their lines. That production manager, backstage guru mindset never stops!

ELIZABETH MORRIS (Instrumentalist) Ella is so excited to experience her very first Winterfest. She will be playing the bass and the shaman drum this year. She has heard so many wonderful things about Winterfest and is excited to see it all come together. Ella is an amazing artist who decorates our days with her chalk creations on the basketball court and is an avid contributor to Pen & Paper...she doesn’t even want the homework pass!

ANYA MUKTAVARAM (Tumnus/Kit/Ensemble) This is Anya’s first ever Winterfest production and they can’t wait to perform! They are playing both Tumnus and Kit, and are excited about the dual role. They can’t wait to get into the characters’ heads and manifest their energy onstage. When not under the lights, or in school, Anya tries to avoid getting kicked in the face by the horses they ride. Their final words about this hobby are: “I go YEEHAW on HORSEY!”

ADELAIDE MULVEHILL (Jane/Ensemble) This will be Addie’s first taste of the WInterfest magic. She will be part of the Dryad Ensemble and a Royal Court Member. Addie loves to sing and will give it her all on stage for the first time here at Unquowa. An artist herself, Addie is looking forward to seeing the beauty of the costumes and set designs. When she’s not at school, she enjoys reading, drawing, baking, and hanging with her dog, Bob! Addie was looking forward to sampling from the famous dessert bar everyone talks about, but she is content to wait another year. She is sure Winterfest 2021 will live up to her expectations!

VIRGINIA MURPHY (Royal Caller Rachel/Ensemble) Eight is great! This is Virginia’s eighth Winterfest, having started at Unquowa in Pre-K 4. After years of learning all our traditional dances, she’s so excited to have a unique role and lines of her own! Virginia’s favorite parts of every performance are the festive dances at the end of the show and seeing all the alumni who have come back to revel in the magic. When she’s not acting, Virginia loves skiing, playing soccer, and cooking with her mom. Her natural curiosity and outgoing demeanor follow her wherever she goes - we know you’ll shine on stage, Virginia!

EDDIE MUSSER (White Witch/Ensemble) This is Eddie’s first Winterfest and boy is he in for a surprise. He will be playing the part of the White Witch and loves the fact that he will be able to be more expressive in this role. He likes acting very much and so this experience is something he looks forward to. During last year’s Springfest Eddie was a part of the Ensemble and enjoyed singing and dancing, which he will also take part in this year. He loves the idea that he will be working with his classmates to bring this show together and how social the process is. In his spare time Eddie enjoys drawing and is learning how to sew. As you can clearly see, Eddie is an artist in many different ways.

MAX OBERHAND (Instrumentalist) This will be Max’s fourth Winterfest, and he is excited about performing again as an instrumentalist. He looks forward to entertaining the audience throughout the show, all the way up until the very end. The inclusive nature of Winterfest is

21

important to him, and he loves being able to perform with his friends. When he’s not strumming the uke or the guitar, he can be found on the basketball court, where he is pursuing a competitive career. In addition to his skill on the court, we also know he’s got the shoes for it!

MIA OBERHAND (Ruthie/Ensemble) This will be Mia’s fourth Winterfest and she is looking forward to performing in person this year! Her last experience was as a Stick Dancer, and she is now ready to shine as Ruthie and be part of the Ensemble. Mia brings enthusiasm and joy wherever she goes, so we know we can look forward to a great performance. Mia is so excited about Winterfest, she can’t even begin to name her favorite part. She just loves EVERYTHING about it! Known for having pink hair, excellent dancing skills, and a talent for soccer, Mia is the whole package!

ADRIAN OMISORE (Instrumentalist) This will be Adrian’s fourth Winterfest. He has always enjoyed being part of the show and the excitement of “showtime”. He loves to play different instruments and be part of the whole experience. Music and dance are important to Adrian. Whether he is listening to music or playing an instrument, he is in his element! In addition to music, Adrian enjoys playing sports, spending time with his brothers, and playing video games.

AIDAN OMISORE (Instrumentalist) Aidan is excited for his fourth Winterfest, and can’t wait to bring his musical skills to this year’s show. When he’s not at Unquowa, Aidan enjoys playing with friends and parkour. When asked what his favorite part about Winterfest is, Aidan coolly replied, “Mine!” We just know we’ll be equally impressed with his performance!

SAWYER ONTHANK (Percy/Ensemble) This will be Sawyer’s 6th Winterfest. He is thrilled to have grown from his previous role of “Tree” in last year’s production, and is excited to play Percy and be a part of our Ensemble cast. Sawyer is looking forward to getting on stage and acting. When he’s not hanging out with his chickens, Sawyer loves collecting Pokemon cards. He hopes to become a vet or marine biologist when he grows up.

FINN PARSONS (Zachery/Ensemble) Finn is ready to retire his dancing sticks and become a mythical creature in his second Winterfest production! He’s looking forward to playing Zachery, along with a Dryad in the Forest Ensemble. Kind and curious, Finn’s interests are a window into his personality: he loves graffiti art, drawing, and making music. Fun facts: Finn is colorblind and can twist his feet sideways! <<insert obvious Dad Joke here>> BREAK A LEG, Finn!

KRISSY PONDEN (Banner, Art, Candle Dance Choreographer) This is Mrs. Ponden’s twenty- fourth Winterfest and her seventeenth behind the scenes. She loves working with students to create the decorations for the castle and choreographing the Candle Dance. Mrs. Ponden especially enjoys watching the crowd’s reaction when the new eighth grade banner is revealed!

ELIZA RABEN (Wizard Wendy/Torus/Ensemble) This will be Eliza’s first-ever Winterfest! Wow, is she in for a treat! Eliza landed the part of Wizard Wendy, and is looking forward to performing for everyone. Aside from that, she’s not quite sure what to expect of Winterfest, so she’s excited to figure out what might be her favorite part! When she isn’t onstage or in the classroom, Eliza loves drawing and writing creatively, and she is a member of the Unquowa Dungeons & Dragons Club. She’s also an avid reader and an experienced martial artist (karate is her combat tradition of choice). Alright, I think it’s about time to KICK off Eliza’s first Winterfest! Break a leg!

SARAH RAGGIO (Gatorbill Biographer) This will be Mrs. Raggio’s first Winterfest and she is so excited! Known to get emotional and cry easily, she will come prepared with tissues. Since her classroom is close to the action, Mrs. Raggio has confessed that she has been listening to rehearsals, but nothing will compare to seeing the real thing, live and in person! She is already a believer in the magic here at Unquowa, but this might just be the icing on the cake.

CHARLOTTE ROBERTS (Queen Lillian/Ensemble) This year marks Charlotte’s EIGHTH Winterfest, and this year she is making her royal debut as Queen Lillian! Winterfest is a special time of the year, and as a long-hauler, Charlotte has grown to love all of the

22

traditions that come with the very last performance on Thursday evening! When she isn’t on stage or hard at work in the classroom, Charlotte enjoys spending time with friends and family. Charlotte is also a member of Unquowa’s Cross Country team! Go Gators!

MATEO ROJAS (Instrumentalist) Mateo is ready for his fourth Winterfest! As a veteran of the season, Mateo knows where the magic happens - both on stage, but also with the _____________ at the very end of the show! (You didn’t think we’d spoil it, did you?) This year, Mateo is playing guitar in the show, and is excited to perform alongside his friends. When he isn’t onstage at Unquowa, you can find him on the soccer field or playing guitar on his own. Whether he’s crossing up the opposing team or shredding those solos, Mateo is always at the top of his game! Enjoy!

HENRY SCHWARTZ (Instrumentalist) While this is Henry’s third Winterfest in which he will perform, he has had the opportunity to watch Winterfest from the audience as his sister performed. In his words, “Winterfest is a good last note before our winter break.” Henry will play the Ukulele with the instrumental group and is looking forward to playing “Stir It Up”. In his free time, Henry plays hockey, hockey, and more hockey. Did we mention he likes hockey?

MICHAEL SCOTTO (Instrumentalist) This year marks Michael’s fourth Winterfest! His favorite parts of the show are: all of the music (that he gets to help create!), and how inclusive it is - it is an event where everyone participates, and, especially, an event where everyone is needed and important. This year, Michael is most looking forward to continuing his role as an instrumentalist, strumming that ukelele to please the crowd. When he’s not onstage, Michael loves playing soccer. And watching it, discussing it, thinking about it, etc. Oh, and also hanging with his friends, because a growing kid needs balance in his steady diet of soccer.

RALEIGH SIMMONDS (River/Lexi/Ensemble) This year will be Raleigh’s third Winterfest. While last year’s transplanted show was fun, Raleigh is super excited to be back with the traditions (even if her favorite part, the desserts at the end, aren’t making their reappearance this year). When she’s not gracing the stage with her acting abilities, Raleigh loves to draw. (So much so that she won the first art contest of the year for Pen & Paper!) After school, you can find Raleigh working on art in the art room or writing and drawing for Pen & Paper. Raleigh’s creativity is second to none, and we can’t wait to see her show that off onstage!

ERIC SNOW (Gatorbill Biographer and Backstage Manager) This is Mr. Snow’s third year at Unquowa, but only second year helping out with Winterfest. Even so, he’s a quick learner (and these biographies aren’t nearly as difficult as the amazing work Mrs. Kirk and Mrs. Kenny are doing)! At least it’s not like his first year where he thought this would be just a nice little play instead of the massive production and celebration it truly is! As students from Pre-K through 8th Grade keep asking him, Mr. Snow is CONSTANTLY trying to make it snow for everyone. (It’s hard work having that last name!)

AVERY SPELLER (Tech Crew) This will be Winterfest #3 for Avery, and after two years of acting, she is excited to be behind the lights instead of center stage this year. Her first Winterfest experience helped her love the banners and confetti, and she can’t wait for that again this year. When she’s not on stage, or running with the techies, she can be found on the volleyball court, playing libero (or, “back row defensive specialist” for those of you who aren’t up to speed on your volleyball lingo). Her last words to me were “Please find a cool way to say ‘I play volleyball’.” I think we can all agree that I spiked that request!

TY SRIHARI (Instrumentalist) This year marks Ty’s third Winterfest. He is excited to be in the instrumentalist corps this year, but his favorite part of the show is… finding any inconsistencies and plot holes in the show. (It’s what he does with novels in class, too!) Ty’s insight is top notch, and he puts that into good use both in the classroom and on his own time (math isn’t just for school, kids). Ty is an avid member of Unquowa’s Dungeons & Dragons Club, and even helped found it way back in 2019. Thanks for bringing that passion to the school, and for bringing your musical talents to the stage today, Ty!

ELIJAH STARKE (King Joseph/Ensemble) This is Elijah’s ninth Winterfest and this year he has the distinction of playing the part of King Joseph. In last year ’s Springfest, Elijah

23

played the part of “Stan”, a member of the “Evil Crew” and this year he is looking forward to having a more extensive role. He enjoys acting a lot, which is probably why he likes Winterfest so much. In his spare time, Elijah enjoys playing video games with his friends and drawing. He is an artist in many different mediums. He also enjoys spending time with his family, which includes big brother Jeremiah who was once a part of Winterfest himself. I guess you can say that the talent runs in the family.

AVA SYLVESTRO (Laura/Ensemble) Ava was born to be on stage, and she can’t wait to show her acting chops in her eighth Winterfest production! With roles as Aunt Laura, a Dryad, and a Royal Court member, Ava’s love of acting will be on full display. Each year, she looks forward to watching the gym transform into our magical Winterfest castle. A true thespian, Ava sings and acts most days of the week, but when she’s not doing that she enjoys playing basketball during the winter season. In between shooting hoops and practicing lines, Ava enjoys binge watching Youtube videos and hanging with her little sister, Taylor (T-Pop)!

WILLIAM TANNER (Instrumentalist) This year will be Will’s eighth Winterfest. Having been a Stick Dancer last year, Will decided to make a change and join the all important Tech Crew along with his role in the Ensemble. Will is excited to try his hand at Tech Crew and is hoping he has what it takes to help deliver an awesome show. When Will is not gaming, you can find him on the basketball court or on a long run. Unfortunately for WIll, one of his favorite Winterfest traditions, the Dessert Table, will not be possible this year, but he is sure to enjoy sweet success in his first behind the scenes experience at Winterfest!

SAM TANZER (Edmund/Ensemble) This will be Sam’s fifth Winterfest and he will be playing the part of Edmund. In last year’s Springfest he played the part of Rupert and also performed in the Ensemble. His favorite part of Winterfest are the traditional holiday songs at the end of the show. For this Winterfest he is looking forward to performance and really getting into his character. Outside of school Sam likes to perform with other theater groups including NewArts as well as drawing and playing the piano. He loves his arts!

CHLOE THOMSON (Tracy/Ensemble) This year’s production will be Coco’s third Winterfest. She’s excited to blossom from Dancing Tree and Stick Dancer, to a role with lines. As much fun as Coco has performing, she truly looks forward to rewatching the production the following year and reminiscing about past shows. When she’s not wow-ing audiences with her acting talents, Coco can be found pencil drawing people and showing off tongue folding tricks. Can you count to three with your tongue? She can! 1… 2… 3… Showtime!

CLEMENTINE THOMSON (Mrs. Pevensie/Raz/Ensemble) This year marks Clem’s fourth Winterfest, and she is super excited. Clem is a born performer and can’t wait to sing and play the part of Mrs. Pevensie! When she isn’t preparing for Winterfest, Clem can be found on the volleyball court or running. Go, Clem!!!

EMILY TOOLAN (Fiona/Ensemble) Emily is thrilled to participate in her fourth Winterfest! A thespian at heart, she’s so excited to be back on stage for Winterfest and wow us with her solo performance as Fiona. Her favorite part of each show is when the whole school dances together at the end, and she can’t wait to see this year’s eighth-grade banner. When she’s not singing and acting, Emily enjoys drawing and skiing. We can’t wait to see her shred it on stage this year!

MICHAEL TOOLAN (Instrumentalist) This year marks Michael’s fourth Winterfest, and he’s excited to support his classmates as an Instrumentalist! Each year, Michael looks forward to all the holiday songs at the end of the show. When he’s not at school, Michael loves to lose himself in a good book. Don’t worry, there’s no cliffhanger here - Michael’s going to rock this performance!

ARIEL WARSHAW (Gatorbill Biographer) This is Ms. Warshaw’s 5th Winterfest at Unquowa. She spent three years eagerly passing out sticks to our Stick Dancers, and is excited to be a Gatorbill Biographer this season. Each year, Ms. Warshaw loves fighting small children for control of the confetti throwers and “awwing” at the sight of our annual Partridge. The joy and magic of Winterfest is contagious, and she can’t wait to

24

revel in this year’s production. When she’s not working in “Starbucks Mode” in the Writing and Humanities rooms or hosting 30 second dance parties, Ms. Warshaw enjoys cooking, traveling (remember that?!), and spending time with her family

EBBA WERRING (Lucy/Instrumentalist/Ensemble) This year marks Ebba’s first-ever Winterfest production! They are super excited about acting, which is a passion of theirs, and is most looking forward to all of the rehearsals because of how much all of that time helps grow their friendships with their fellow actors and instrumentalists. When they’re not performing, you can find Ebba doing a VARIETY of different things. From reading voraciously to watching television (thanks, Netflix!), to playing games (card, board, and puzzles), to cooking and baking, to skating and skiing… WHEW! There’s so much they love to do that it’s impressive they can fit it all in! We hope you love your first Winterfest, Ebba!

BRYAN WILSON JR. (Instrumentalist) This will be Bryan’s fourth Winterfest! He is excited to continue as a guitarist, and this year will add in the ukulele and the djembe (or African drum). Bryan is most looking forward to the eighth grade right of passage, the Candle Dance. Outside of school, you can find Bryan playing sports (especially basketball and lacrosse) or hanging out with friends. Rock on, Bryan!

JORDAN WILSON (Instrumentalist) This will be Jordan’s fourth Winterfest. He will be part of our instrumental group playing the Ukulele and drums. In last year ’s Springfest Jordan was also an instrumentalist and, although he was kind of nervous, he enjoyed playing music. This year he is most looking forward to the performances and playing the drums for the first time. Jordan’s favorite part of Winterfest is the feast after the show. One can build up a real appetite for sweets performing in a show!

MIKEY WINKLER (Peter/Ensemble) This will be Mikey’s second true Winterfest! Since he arrived in 6th Grade, Mikey has loved Winterfest (and last year’s transplanted Springfest), and can’t wait for this new show! He enjoys acting immensely and has had a blast in a variety of roles. That said, he’s definitely ready to shine as Peter Pevensie this year! When he isn’t on stage, Mikey really loves playing video games with his brother and reading lots of books. We hope this experience with Winterfest is as great as your first, Mikey!

ELOISE YOUNG (Instrumentalist) This is Eloise’s third true Winterfest and she will be playing the ukulele. In last year’s Springfest, Eloise… also played the ukulele! (Why mess with a good thing, I guess?) Eloise’s favorite part of Winterfest is the momentum leading up to it as well as the relief when it is all over. She enjoys the feast at the end as well and feels it is the perfect culminating activity after the show. The only request that she makes is that she doesn’t have to clean up the streamers at the end!
