Balancing parental responsibilities along with studying for your degree can be tricky, but you shouldn’t be left in the dark about what’s available to you We also recognise that all students have an individual student experience complete with different challenges, so this guide is written in partnership with students from the Mature & Part-time Students Network, Winchester Students’ Union, and the University of Winchester to provide you with support and tips to help you enjoy life as a student parent, or if you find yourself becoming a parent, whilst at Winchester
ACADEMiC SUPPORT
If a lecture or seminar is conflicting with parental responsibilities, it is worth mentioning this to your lecturers or programme administrator as they may be able to assist you. For example, you may be able to gain permission to record lectures.
If your child becomes ill, you are entitled to complete an Exceptional Circumstances form if this disrupts your studies or assignments. Be sure to communicate your needs to your faculty so you can get appropriate support

NURSERiES & SCHOOLS
There are two nurseries located within close proximity to the University – West Downs Day Nursery at the West Downs Quarter, and Tops Day Nursery located on Burma Road However, if you cannot book a place, or have a lecture that finishes late, you can visit: www.childcare.co.uk to find childminders in the local area.
Usually, schools ensure plenty of afterschool and holiday care cover. However, some great external companies in the local area include: Barracudas Activity Day Camps and Winchester Sport & Leisure Park

HOUSiNG & PARKiNG
There is a range of University Managed accommodation on campus which includes self-catered, catered, en-suite and shared bathrooms All accommodation types have designated quiet areas There is also limited single sex allocated accommodation as well as a small number of selfcontained flats for students with children, couples and students with medical/disability needs Students will also have access to a database of off campus properties when searching for private sector accommodation.

Parking is not available on campus for students unless they meet certain requirements, such as holding a blue badge or requiring regular registered carer visits

FiNANCiAL SUPPORT
You will be able to apply to Student Finance for a loan to cover your fees and to help with your living expenses. The amount of loan for living expenses will depend on your personal circumstances. You may also be eligible to apply for various grants and benefits, depending on your household income and where you live and/or study. If you are lone parent, you may be entitled to certain government benefits. For more information about this, please contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
As a student parent, there is nothing wrong with needing support For local and practical community support, you can get in touch with www.gingerbread.org.uk – a charity supporting lone parents. For listening and non-judgemental support, you can contact www.familylives.org.uk who also provide a confidential hotline

Student Listeners
This is a peer support scheme run for students, by students who have received training in listening and support skills. They support the Students’ Union’s weekly Wellbeing Café, held from 2-4pm on Wednesdays on Level 2 of the King Alfred Centre You can speak to our Student Listeners about anything from homesickness, low self-esteem, relationship/housemate difficulties, to course worries, and more.

Winchester Students’ Union is run for students, by students. We are an independent organisation from the University itself, and we are dedicated to representing and supporting you as students, as well as providing a wide range of opportunities, activities and events for all students across our Education, Welfare, Activities and Commercial Zones
Student welfare is a priority for the Students‘ Union, and we understand the challenges many students face when going to University.
