Foreword by President of the Republic of Maldives It is with great pleasure that I write a few words to you, dear readers of Travelution, on the very backbone and the essence of our nation's prosperity the tourism sector. The Maldives, with its breathtaking coral atolls, pristine beaches, and warm, welcoming culture, has long been renowned as a tropical paradise. Our tourism industry has been the cornerstone of our economic growth, bringing not only revenue but also fostering cultural exchange and understanding across the globe. As we look ahead, it is imperative to recognize the pivotal role that tourism plays in shaping the destiny of our nation. The sector has been a driving force behind our economic growth, providing employment opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, and contributing significantly to our GDP. It has not only showcased the natural wonders of the Maldives but has also served as a bridge, connecting diverse cultures and fostering international cooperation. In charting the course for the future, we must be cognizant of the challenges that lie ahead. Climate change poses an existential threat to low-lying nations like ours, with rising sea levels and extreme weather events impacting our environment and, consequently, our tourism industry. We are committed to addressing these challenges head-on, adopting sustainable practices, and investing in initiatives that promote environmental conservation. The Maldives has always been a global leader in advocating for climate action, and I am determined to carry this legacy forward. We must strike a delicate balance between promoting tourism and safeguarding our fragile ecosystems. Sustainable tourism practices will not only preserve our natural beauty for generations to come but will also enhance the appeal of the Maldives as a responsible and eco-conscious destination. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is not just a necessity but an integral part of our identity. We envision a future where tourists from around the world can experience the wonders of the Maldives without compromising the ecological integrity of our nation. As we embark on this journey together, I extend my gratitude to the industry stakeholders for their continued support. Together, we can make the Maldives a beacon of sustainable tourism, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of nature and human endeavors. Dr. Mohamed Muizzu President of the Republic of Maldives, As of 17 November 2023

The Maldives archipelago is a collection of 26 atolls and 1,192 coral islands and is regarded as a symbol of idyllic beauty and unrivalled luxury. Each atoll is composed of coral reefs and pristine islands, displaying the fine craftsmanship of nature. Beneath the cerulean waters lies an unparalleled wonderland where unique marine life thrives. From graceful manta rays and playful dolphins to colourful coral reefs, turtles, and fishes, Maldives makes an exhilarating escape for underwater enthusiasts and scuba divers. Of the 1,192 isles, close to 200 are inhabited by the local people, more than 170 islands are operational luxury resorts, while the remaining are uninhabited. The

The Maldives

population of Maldives is over 500,00. The local time is GMT +5 and the local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). With an official conversion rate of 15.42, US Dollar is also widely accepted around the country, especially at tourist attractions and resorts. While famous for its white sandy beaches and laid-back lifestyle, the tropical haven has a rich history and distinctive culture. The islands of Maldives were inhabited by Indo-Aryan settlers around 1500 BC, followed by South Indian and Sri Lankan migrants. Drawn to the country’s wealth of spices, coconuts, fish, pearls, and especially cowry shells (recognized as currency from Africa to China until the sixteenth century), Arab and Persian travellers began visiting the islands around 947 AD. Maldives converted to Islam from a Buddhist kingdom during the reign of King Koimala in 1153 AD. The kings were titled Sultans after the religious transition, and King Koimala was renamed Sultan Mohammed-bin-Abdullah. Arab, South Asian, and European travellers greatly influenced the society and culture of the Maldives over the centuries.

The Maldives

Raa Atoll

Maldives is home to some of the finest artists, highly skilled in many forms of art. During the Buddhist Kingdom, coral stone architecture flourished on the islands. The stunning craftsmanship of the Maldivian people were visible from the intricately carved statues and buildings made from coral stone. After the transition to Islam, Arabic styles were infused in Maldivian artistry. Some of the most historical artifacts in the country include coral stone mosques. The structures were complete with complex carvings and calligraphy. For those interested in exploring the fine ancient Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy)

architecture, Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy) and Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy (The Travelling Mosque) are intact in Malé City today. Among the many Maldivian traditions and crafts, the traditional attire ‘Kasabu Libaas’ is a stunning work of art with a detailed embroidered neckline (Kasabu Boavalhu). Although ‘Kasabu Libaas’ is not a daily outfit, it is still appreciated and worn to celebrate the Maldivian traditions on occasion for ceremonies and other events. Maldivian craftsmanship includes lacquer work (Liyelaa ehun), woodcarving and stone carving, boat building, spinning coir-rope, and thatch-weaving (Fangi Viyun). From the handwoven ‘Thundu Kunaa’ mats from Gdh. Gahdhoo to the fine jewellery from Dh. Rinbudhoo, Maldivians’ regard for finer details and the intricacy of each piece of art distinguishes the works from the rest.

12

When it comes to local delicacies, a variety of dishes can be found across the many islands. As coconut and fish are staples in Maldives, the majority of the dishes are made using both ingredients. Mas Huni (shredded smoked fish mixed with scraped coconut and spices), Garudhiya (a clear fish broth commonly eaten with rice and other side dishes), and Rihaakuru (thick fish paste) are some popular dishes among the local people. Coconut sweets such as Addu Bondi, deep-fried breadfruit chips, and an array of short eats giving the ultimate Maldivian flavors are a must to try. During the early years, fishing and agriculture were the country’s major income sources. In 1972, Tourism was introduced to the Maldives with the opening of the very first island resort, Kurumba Maldives. During the following years, Tourism became the backbone of the country’s economy. Accounting for more than half of the nation’s GDP and providing a large number of employment opportunities, the development of high-end luxury island resorts continued. Five decades later, with more than 170 operational resorts in the country, Maldives is one of the top most sought-after holiday destinations in the world. With several flights every week, more than thirty airlines currently operate direct flights to the island nation. Major airlines flying to the Maldives include British Airways, Air India, AirAsia, Air Astana, Aeroflot, China Eastern, Bangkok Airways, Beijing Capital Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Gulf Air. While direct flights are available from many parts of the world, connecting flights are also available from major transit hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Istanbul, and Singapore, making Maldives more accessible than before. How do you ensure a seamless and personalized guest experience, considering the unique challenges and expectations of operating luxury resorts in remote islands such as The Maldives? Our company’s core belief is: “Joy of Giving.” We think giving should be heartfelt and genuine. This belief is like our guiding star, motivating us to serve our guests, inspire our teams, and enhance the relationships with our partners, all from the heart. It’s what drives us to create, innovate, and improve our services. ‘Joy of Giving’ starts with crafting personalized holidays that meet our guests’ ideal vacation expectations. We are pioneers in offering beyond all-inclusive holidays in the Maldives, where you can enjoy luxurious island living without worrying about your check-out heavy invoice. At each of our properties, we offer an exclusive ‘Holiday Plan’ that includes a variety of experiences and services, all with a spirit of generosity. However, our mission extends further, we aim to create a unique sense of place for all guests, showcasing the rich cultural diversity and natural beauty of each of our different islands. As we set sail towards the next exciting phase of our growth, venturing into new and distinctive South Asian destinations, our unwavering commitment to embracing the Joy of Giving remains steadfast. This commitment fuels our ability to deliver unparalleled, personalized guest experiences. Can you explain your approach to building and maintaining

successful

partnerships

to

enhance

Atmosphere Core’s offerings? We make certain that our resorts remain captivating to both our guests and partners by consistently improving and enhancing the overall experience. This includes ongoing efforts in resort development, renovations, launching new properties, offering unique experiences, and hosting special events. Also, every year, we try to create a series of unique and innovative events through various partnerships. For instance, we’ve taken an innovative approach to cultivate an authentic in-house wine culture. Recently, Atmosphere Core partnered with three family-owned wineries: Champagne Guy Charbaut (France), Bodegas Viñátigo (Canary Islands in Spain), and the newest addition, Glenelly Estate (South Africa). These partners were carefully selected based on extensive research, considering their authenticity, family-owned values, and the unique expressive terroir wines that are exclusive to the Maldives. These exceptional wines are now available across all the brands within our portfolio. Interview: Mr Stephane Laguette

23

Can you elaborate on Atmosphere Core’s efforts to integrate eco-friendly practices into your commercial strategies and how these efforts align with the company’s long-term goals? Sustainability has been ingrained in the DNA of Atmosphere Core from day one. In line with our unwavering commitment, we’ve ensured that all our resorts are Green Globe certificated. Our approach to sustainability centers are built around ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.’ We diligently monitor, measure, and regularly communicate our sustainability efforts to our colleagues, media outlets, and sales partners. Atmosphere Core has one of the largest solar power generation setups in the Maldives. We have an extensive solar power installation, with 8,890 solar panels across resorts, boasting a total capacity of 11.76 Mwh of clean energy. Over the past decade, we’ve forged deep emotional bonds with our colleagues, partners, and guests, receiving overwhelming support at every level in pursuit of our long-term goals. I would like to highlight the ongoing initiative at our resort, OBLU SELECT Sangeli, known as the Muraka (Coral) Project. This initiative is dedicated to preserving the ocean and coral ecosystem through coral restoration, wildlife identification, reef clean-ups, and repurposing ghost nets, among others. We’ve partnered with OceanЯ, an Irish brand specializing in sustainable apparel, to offer sustainable Rash Vests and T-shirts. Each piece contributes to removing 1 kg of plastic from the sea. We remain dedicated to creating marketing materials in various formats to effectively convey our eco-warrior messages. OBLU SELECT Lobigili

How do you ensure seamless inter-departmental collaboration for a cohesive commercial strategy and outstanding guest value? Our strategic approach centers around the “Joy of Giving,” internally and externally. We deeply understand guest preferences and the growing trends in the travel & hospitality industry. We are more about freedom to move and experiential engagement. As pioneers in the Maldivian industry, we have achieved remarkable success with our innovative “Evolving Holiday Plans,” which seamlessly blend dining, beverages, activities, and water sports to create an exceptional holiday experience. We adapted integrated commercial tactics to create an infrastructure that elevates guest satisfaction and fosters collaboration between our corporate and in-resort teams, resulting in a unified and effective strategy. Finally, in your industry reputation as the CCO of Atmosphere Core, once we set that aside, how would you define your personal identity? I see myself as an open-minded individual who readily embraces challenges. I am also a lifelong student, always exploring and soaking up new knowledge.

The architecture embraces sustainable ethos with earthy colors and natural materials like wood, linen, rattan, and stone, blending seamlessly with meticulously designed interiors. The open-air structures feature swirling fans and perforated screens, creating mesmerizing light and shadow effects. Patina boasts custom-made furniture, triangular sunshades suspended between palm trees, and floor-to-ceiling sliding windows offering breathtaking views. Notably, the resort includes the awe-inspiring Skyspace light installation by James Turrell, providing a serene

tones and a moonlit glow.

St. Regis Vommuli Created by WOW Architects, Vommuli is designed to promote sustainability and honor local craftsmanship. The overwater villas resemble manta rays, extending their parts onto the water, and the beach villas offer a contemporary interpretation of traditional fishing huts. Both villas showcase interior designs inspired by the island’s

coral chandeliers, headboards crafted from recycled glass beads, and fabric miming the tranquil water ripple. The resort features a whale shark-shaped bar adorned with a wooden ceiling mural crafted using the Pyrography technique, a lobster-inspired spa, and a spiral shell-shaped library.

38

Finolhu Maldives Finolhu is exclusively solar-powered, designed by Yuji Yamazaki in partnership with local firm Design 2000. The resort’s design integrates its solar panels into all aspects of the development, most notably the long walkway that connects the villas on the water to the beach, making them visible to guests as an architectural embellishment. The curved gables, wooden decks, facades, and roof elements complement the beach’s green vegetation and the clear blue on the water. And from above, Finolhu looks like a comet shooting across the heavens, its tail formed by a 1.2-mile sandbank.

Alila Kothaifaru Studiogoto took inspiration from the island’s flat terrain to create a modern minimalist architecture that harmonizes with the surrounding nature. The architectural design combines bold lines with natural materials, cultural motifs, and organic shapes, balancing intimate and open-air spaces. This design approach fosters a peaceful atmosphere, promoting relaxation and harnessing the healing properties of nature. A calming and contemporary color palette is achieved through light timber and sand tones, complemented by touches of black. Sustainable practices are also embraced, with rooftop landscaping providing insulation against heat and sun and locally sourced fabrics incorporated into the interior design.

Aishath Dheena Mohamed Co-founder of MULA Maldives

How did the idea of Mula Maldives come about? My husband and I are like minded and always talk about different business ideas we have. So when we met, he would sometimes talk about a sun care brand and how it would be amazing to have our own sun care brand, as we are from a tropical country. So one day, we were floating this idea, and we were like, let's do it. We researched to find potential manufacturers and existing products in the market. After many Zoom meetings and sleepless nights, we landed on a manufacturer we were really happy with, and we launched our first products in 2021, right after COVID-19. We founded Mula to make sun care more accessible and fun for people to use. How would you describe your role within the company? I am the co-founder of Mula Maldives. I handle all the operations,

including

marketing, social media, and customer services at our company. I am also sometimes a videographer and photographer. How does MULA differentiate itself in a competitive market? When we first entered into the sun care market, we understood that we were entering into a very competitive market, especially because there are huge, well-known brands that are already globally recognized and existing in the Maldives. So when we formulated the products and brought MULA into existence, we made sure that the ingredients and the quality of products were competitive, if not better than some of the existing brands and products. So we opted to manufacture from Australia, where sun care products are highly regulated and used

Operating a business in The Maldives is quite tough, as our country is quite small compared to other countries, so we have very limited market opportunities. Our population is below 500,000, and average annual tourist arrival is about 1.5 million, whereas other brands can penetrate into larger markets with higher populations and even more tourist arrivals like over ten, hundreds of millions. Regardless of the small population and market, I believe

there is opportunity for local brands to showcase their products across our country, in the resorts, hotels and guesthouses, with exposure to tourists from various parts of the globe. At the same time, I would also like to recognize the support from the resorts and hotels in the Maldives. If it were not for the support provided by the big chains, we would not be able to expand the business as much as we have over the past year. Also, the current administration provides a lot of opportunities for small businesses like us to flourish in

For this we made sure our sunscreens did not have any oxybenzone or Octinoxate, which are two of the most harmful chemicals that affect juvenile corals. In addition to this, I would like to point out that our bottles are recyclable. Can you share a story or experience that showcases your brand’s positive impact on the tourism industry? Whenever we run a campaign or create content for social media and websites, we always put front the beauty of Maldives. If you go through our Instagram, you will notice that we always show the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters because to us, that is what sun care is. And as

Travelling to Maldives: A Doctor’s Advice Jet lag ruining your vacation? Not anymore. Planning a vacation but worried about jet lag ruining the fun? Worry no more. Many tourists flying across more than five time zones often experience jet lag. The good news is that there are ways to tackle it. It’s essential to know that recovering from jet lag might take longer after flying from west to east compared to the other way around. If you’re an adult and have faced severe jet lag on previous trips, melatonin might be your savior. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that if you decide to take melatonin, avoid consuming alcohol with it for optimal results. Also, don’t forget to consider having small and frequent meals and using caffeine strategically to manage jet lag better.

Keeping the party legs pumping to beat DVT Maldives is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Some, unfortunately, must travel long distances prior to reaching paradise. Be on the lookout for Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT) / lower limb swelling during your journey. This condition is not uncommon in travelers who fly longer than six to eight hours. To avoid DVT, stretching, standing up and walking around every hour or two is very important. Don’t forget to flex and extend your ankles and knees as often as you can. If you have a history of DVT in the past, the likelihood of it occurring again increases so do wear a knee-high compression stocking. It’s advisable to avoid crossing your legs for prolonged periods.

Traveling while Pregnant Maldives is a rising destination for babymoon celebrations. Air travel doesn’t have any known negative effects on pregnant women or their babies. However, it’s crucial to be cautious, especially if you’ve had complicated pregnancies in the past, such as premature delivery, late-term miscarriage, high blood pressure, or eclampsia. In such cases, extensive travel during your current pregnancy is best avoided. Instead, consider opting for transfer via seaplane or domestic flights instead of speed boats for added comfort and safety. To ensure a smooth journey, make sure you get enough rest, sleep well, and take your antenatal medications on time. Your host at the destination will be more than happy to assist you and accommodate your commute as per your specific needs. You can even treat yourself to a relaxing spa session for a much-needed indulgence during your babymoon. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to consult your OB for guidance and reassurance.

Chef Ishaq Solih Executive Chef at Royal Island Resort & Spa

How did your culinary journey lead you to become the Executive Chef at Royal Island Maldives Resort? My journey in the culinary industry has been a long and challenging one, but it all began with a deep-rooted interest sparked by the stories of my two uncles, who were both chefs. Listening to them talk about their own journeys and their profound connection with food ignited a passion in me to become a chef myself. However, my path was far from conventional, as I hail from the southernmost island in the Maldives, where educational opportunities were limited. At the tender age of 15, I began working at a resort as a plumber, and the General Manager brought me into the kitchen. This pivotal moment opened the door to a world of learning and experience that I had longed for. Eventually, I pursued a formal education, earning a degree in Culinary Art Management, solidifying my journey to become a professional chef. Can you share a childhood food memory that has had a lasting influence on your culinary journey, and how has it shaped your approach to cooking today? In the past, there used to be a festival known as “12 Mahuge 12 Dhuvas” on our islands. My grandmother and our family would gather at our house to celebrate this occasion, and part of the tradition was cooking a variety of dishes, including Haluvidhaa.

As a result, I consistently remind my staff that theoretical knowledge is essential but must be supplemented by

this day. Despite our best efforts, the dish did not turn out as expected. It turned out that, by accident, we had used cut-up rubber instead of the intended Haluvidhaa ingredient. This experience taught me a valuable lesson that appearances can be deceiving, and it’s important to rely on personal experience rather than simply accepting what we see or hear from others. This lesson has influenced my approach to management and problem-solving. In my managerial role, I emphasize the importance of making the best use of available resources and not giving up when faced with challenges. This experience has also reinforced the idea that there

Can you give an example of a dish or menu that captures the spirit of Royal Island Maldives Resort? How do you ensure it creates a memorable dining experience for guests? There is a remarkable and enduring dish on the menuAvocado Souffle, which has been a staple for the past 25 years. The dish has remained a constant favorite among our guests, and its only evolution has been in its presentation. It’s worth noting that if you visit the Royal Island website, you will find a plethora of guest reviews praising the exceptional deliciousness of our food.

is our impressive rate of repeat guests, averaging around 30%. This statistic demonstrates that our guests genuinely love what we offer, particularly our food. It’s a testament to the consistently high standards we uphold at Royal Island. If you were to create a dish that represents your personality, what would it be and why? I always prioritize preserving the authenticity of the food I prepare. As Maldivians, we initially had limited resources, which underscores the importance of maintaining the original flavors even as we incorporate modern twists. For instance, we introduced Grilled Masbaih not too long ago. To me, showcasing one’s personality involves letting their creativity shine through. In a changing world with access to more ingredients, Masbaih has also evolved. We now incorporate bilimagu for a touch of sweetness and sourness, along with mustard seeds to enhance the dish. The ultimate aim is to retain the essence of Maldivian cuisine while elevating and expanding upon its flavors.

If you could invite three famous historical figures to a dinner party you’re hosting and cooking for them, who would they be, and what would you serve? I would select our Chairman, Mr. Gasim Ibrahim, Chef Sobah, and Azza Rasheed. Mr. Gasim Ibrahim has a discerning palate when it comes to his preferred dishes, readily detecting any alterations. Therefore, my intention is to present him with his favorite meal, but made by Chef Sobah. For Chef Sobah himself, I would opt for a delectable Kandukukulhu prepared using Gabulhi. And Addu Bondi for Azza Rasheed. My rationale behind this choice is twofold: First, I’ve noticed Azza Rasheed’s presence on various platforms, and I’m intrigued by her perspective on food. Secondly, by bringing together these three distinct personalities over these carefully chosen dishes, I envision a dining experience that fosters engaging and stimulating conversations.

Lotus Bike Shop stands as your gateway to a sustainable and environmentally conscious era of mobility in the Maldives. In a world where climate change is a growing concern, we are proud to take the lead in advocating for eco-friendly transportation solutions. Our commitment resonates deep within our communities, as we extend our services to provide electric mobility solutions across the Greater Male’ region, resorts, and inhabited islands throughout the atolls. Electric vehicles (EVs), characterized by their quiet motors and zero tailpipe emissions, not only enhance the serene ambiance that the tropical destination is renowned for, but also align seamlessly with the country’s dedicated climate change policies.

Sustainability on Two and Four-Wheels Our approach is rooted in an exhaustive analysis of the diverse commuting methods prevalent across various regions of the country, coupled with an intricate unde standing of the unique purposes these transportation modes serve. Residents of the Greater Male’ region showcase a strong preference for swifter two-wheelers, complemented by spacious u-box compartments that streamline their daily commutes. Conversely, those living in the atolls often find the bicycle category to be a fitting and pragmatic solution for their transportation needs. This led us to conclude that individuals opting for bicycles could greatly benefit from the convenience of an integrated motor, empowering them to effortlessly switch between automatic and manual drive modes.

AIMA Malan: Redefining Convenience A sleek, quieter, and more affordable alternative to traditional mopeds. Delivering a range of up to 70km per charge cycle at speeds of 60 km/h, it is as simple as plug-and-play for your convenience.

Zhiwalk ZJ1, Z31 and ZXL: Blending the Finest of Both Worlds ZJ1, Z31 and ZXL are dual mode electric bicycles with automatic and manual drive options. They come with a basket for your groceries, and a pair of pedals if you ever feel adventurous. All three models are equipped with hydraulic shock-absorption, providing comfort even on rough surfaces.

Zhiwalk Electric Pick-Up: Heavy-Duty, Zero Emissions When transportation needs surpass the capacity of a conventional twowheeler, our ZhiWalk Pick-ups, also known as Rashu Pick-ups, roll in. The all-electric tricycles can effortlessly bear loads of up to 1.5 tonnes, catering to complex logistical requirements.

Paving the Way for a Net Zero Future As the Maldives aims for a net-zero future by 2030, we firmly believe the private sector plays a pivotal role in steering away from conventional practices. Automobile retailers stand not only as providers of superior alternatives but also as educators, guiding their audience towards embracing such solutions. With a strong emphasis on affordability, Lotus Bike Shop has achieved significant progress within the Maldives. Today, an increasing number of customers are making the transition to environmentally friendly options. While the adoption of electric vehicles has gained momentum in recent years, the establishment of robust infrastructure will further enhance the convenience of using these vehicles in the years to come. Our journey is not just about moving forward; it is about advancing responsibly while harmonising with the rhythms of nature. Our vision is to involve citizens from all walks of life in this transformative expedition.

Saifullah Shareef Captain at Trans Maldivian Airways

Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in aviation, particularly your journey to becoming a pilot at TMA? My aviation journey started at the age of 16, following my O levels, when an opportune introductory flight at Addu Flying School kindled an abiding passion within me. Through the years, I’ve been fortunate to gather invaluable experiences where I had the privilege of honing my skills and deepening my understanding of Seaplane operations. The transition to flying ATR further enriched my expertise and gave me more perspective in the IFR world as well. Navigating the challenges brought about by the pandemic tested my resilience, and during this time, my commitment to aviation persevered. A welcome opportunity to return to TMA’s seaplane flying not only reignited my spirit but also reinforced my belief in aviation’s transformative power. Guided by this journey— marked by both exhilarating first flights and pandemicinduced uncertainties—I am inspired to continue this path with unyielding dedication, hoping to continue to learn as a pilot and master this field. Could you describe a typical day in the life of a TMA seaplane pilot? How does this differ from the experience of pilots in more conventional aviation roles?
