Trust Crime Stoppers with your ANONYMOUS tip to help fight Gang Violence, Extortion and more

There’s little doubt that gang activity and drug trafficking continue to lead the way in fuelling shootings and many of the violent crimes we’re seeing. No matter the crime however, someone somewhere always knows something about it, and reporting even the smallest detail can help police build a bigger picture in their investigation.

Police are doing their best to fight these problems, but they can’t be everywhere all the time, and they’re often able to make good use of new information from anyone who can help be their “extra eyes and ears”. The recent wave of extortion threats

targeting South Asian-owned businesses in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, and elsewhere across Canada is also a worrisome example. People who could provide valuable inside information about a crime often won’t call police directly for fear of reprisal. But reporting information ANONYMOUSLY to Crime Stoppers means doing the right thing without being found out.

If you know something - anything - that police might find useful to identify and arrest criminals, Crime Stoppers urges you to call. The information you provide is given directly to the police so they can

make arrests and recover stolen goods, drugs and illegal weapons. Criminals go to jail, while you remain anonymous.

You’ll never have to give your name or testify in court. Your information might help make an arrest, prevent more crimes, or even save a life - with no risk to you. In fact, the Supreme Court of Canada guarantees you will never be identified, nor will you be called to answer questions.

Crime Stoppers is not the police. Call no matter what language you speak.

For anyone new to Canada, the idea of what Crime Stoppers does might be difficult to grasp at first, especially for someone without a working knowledge of English. “Trusting someone you don’t know might be hard,” says Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers Executive Director Linda Annis. “But more than 40 years of trust by the thousands of tipsters who’ve called Crime Stoppers proves how safe it is to call anonymously with information about any crime.”

Anyone afraid to speak directly to police can take comfort in knowing that Crime Stoppers offers a safe, anonymous way to report information. “I can’t emphasize enough that although we accept tips on crime, we are not the police,” Annis says. “We’re also sensitive to the fact that some people moving here from other countries might bring an inherent distrust of the police or other authorities with them, and for some new immigrant families, not speaking English might also make them think twice about calling.”

However, Crime Stoppers will guide anyone through how to provide an anonymous tip in their own language through its multilingual translation service. Tips are accepted in 115 languages, 24 hours a day. “We’ve always guaranteed the anonymity of each and every person who’s ever called us with a crime tip, no matter where they’re from, or what language they speak,” Annis says.

Why Your Tip Matters

Every year, about 5,000 people contact Crime Stoppers locally with information. Since Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers’ inception in the mid-1980s, anonymous tips have led to more than 8,400 arrests and the seizure of more than half-a-billion dollars in property and drugs in the Greater Vancouver area.

“See Something, Say Something” Prevention Programs for Seniors and Students

One of Canada’s most underreported crimes is elder abuse, a hidden crime that often consists of physical, emotional, or financial harm. The perpetrator is often someone in a position of trust like a friend or family member. “We want seniors and their families to understand that an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers is always an option,” Annis adds. “Crime Stoppers works proactively year-round to spread that very message, offering its “See Something, Say Something” Elder

Abuse Awareness presentations at places like retirement homes and community centres.

Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers also offers a “See Something, Say Something” school presentation program. Each school year, it goes into local classrooms to demonstrate to students in grades eight and 10 the importance of giving anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers. To date, the program has reached more than 200,000 students.

The Bottom Line - Please Don’t Hesitate, Call Crime Stoppers ANONYMOUSLY

If you see something suspicious, don’t assume someone else will report it. Call it in at 1-800-222-8477 in any language including Punjabi, Hindi, Mandarin and Cantonese. Tips are also accepted through Crime Stoppers’ downloadable “P3” phone app, or online at solvecrime.ca and may lead to a reward of up to $5000.

AASHEESH K. PURI

Fierce Advocate for Justice at Acumen Law Corporation

For Aasheesh K. Puri, the path into law was shaped by inspiring mentors and the communities he has served. His earliest spark came from observing Judge Briscoe in the Provincial Court of Manitoba, whose persistence and tireless advocacy left a lasting impression. After gaining early experience as a legal assistant in family, real estate, and corporate law, Aasheesh’s career took a defining turn when he articled in Thompson, a small town in Northern Manitoba. Mentored by two leading defence practitioners, he worked closely with vulnerable clients—many struggling with addiction and generational trauma. That experience not only deepened his compassion but also cemented his commitment to criminal defence and civil forfeiture law.

Today, as a lawyer at Acumen Law Corporation, Aasheesh is known for his fierce dedication to client advocacy. His philosophy centers

on building trust and truly knowing his clients before addressing their legal issues. “Every client deserves an unbiased approach,” he says. “Understanding their story allows me to find the best possible defences and explore meaningful resolutions.”

One of his most challenging yet rewarding cases involved defending a client in a sexual assault trial with a child witness. Preparing for the sensitive cross-examination required him to revisit his purpose as a lawyer. The eventual acquittal reinforced his belief in persistence and compassionate representation.

Aasheesh’s practice also extends to civil forfeiture and Section 490 applications, where he thrives on challenging the broad powers granted to police. He sees these cases as an opportunity to push for greater judicial oversight and protect clients’ rights against state overreach.

He emphasizes the importance of early intervention—encouraging clients to preserve evidence and document their recollections immediately, ensuring their defence is built on a strong foundation. At Acumen, he also embraces technology-driven tools, such as the firm’s “Hey Siri” shortcut, which empower clients to protect themselves in real time.

Beyond the courtroom, Aasheesh draws strength from Acumen’s culture of persistence. “Do not back down,” he says, recalling lessons from his colleagues whose relentless advocacy inspires his own approach. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand community education—particularly within the Punjabi-speaking community—through accessible content on driving laws and individual rights. For him, knowledge is power, and sharing it is the most meaningful way to strengthen trust and access to justice.

USTAAD G 76 SANJAY BAJAJ

When Sanjay Bajaj established his first restaurant location, it was a remarkably challenging time due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s peak, leading him to initiate the restaurant’s work at this site. When Sanjay Bajaj opened this first location, it was a very tough time and to open it, when Covid-19 was at its peak, he started the work of this restaurant at this location.

The journey began with a single restaurant in 2020. Sanjay was determined to set the highest standards for both food and service. Every detail—from recipes to presentation, staff training to customer experience—was meticulously planned. The restaurant quickly became a favourite among locals, and word of mouth turned it into a neighbourhood success story. This first location laid the foundation for what would become a growing brand.

By 2020, Sanjay had opened a second location. The goal was clear: replicate the success of the first restaurant while tailoring the experience to a new community. Lessons learned from the inaugural location were applied, from sourcing ingredients to staff training, ensuring that each new restaurant carried the same signature authenticity and quality.

In 2021, the brand continued its steady growth with a third and fourth restaurant. This period was marked by strengthening operations and refining processes. Sanjay

focused on building strong teams at each location, maintaining consistent service standards, and ensuring that the brand’s identity remained intact even as it expanded.

The year 2022 brought unprecedented challenges as the hospitality industry faced disruptions. Yet, Sanjay’s resilience and adaptability kept the business on track. He strengthened delivery and takeaway services and enhanced digital engagement with customers. Each new restaurant that opened during this time was a testament to careful planning, persistence, and operational excellence.

By 2023, Ustaad G 76 had grown into a recognized and respected brand with its fifth and sixth locations open. The chain was no longer just a series of restaurants—it had become a trusted culinary name, known for delivering consistent quality and creating welcoming spaces for the community.

Throughout this growth, Sanjay has remained focused on one principle: every restaurant should be a place where people feel at home. Families celebrate milestones, students enjoy comforting meals, and neighbours gather for casual dining experiences. Each new location reflects this philosophy, ensuring that growth never compromises the brand’s welcoming and community-centered atmosphere.

Guests and staff alike are part of this story. The loyalty and repeat visits from customers highlight the success of Sanjay’s approach: a restaurant chain that grows responsibly while keeping people at the heart of the experience.

Five years after opening the first location, Ustaad G 76 continues to expand thoughtfully. Sanjay’s vision for the future is ambitious yet grounded: to open more restaurants while maintaining the same commitment to quality, authenticity, and customer experience. Each new opening introduces the brand’s signature style to new communities, provides employment opportunities, and fosters lasting connections.

For Sanjay, success is measured not by the number of locations, but by the impact each restaurant has on its community. His journey—from a single location to a growing culinary empire—demonstrates the power of strategic thinking, persistence, and a deep understanding of both people and business.

Through careful planning, unwavering dedication, and a commitment to authenticity, Sanjay Bajaj has built more than a series of restaurants—he has created a legacy of quality, community, and growth. Each new location is a milestone in a journey that started with one restaurant and has now grown into a culinary empire.

From its humble beginnings in 2020 to multiple thriving locations today, Ustaad G 76 continues to embody the vision, passion, and resilience of its founder. As the brand expands further, one thing remains certain: Sanjay’s recipe for success is rooted not just in great food, but in the belief that every restaurant can be a place where people feel valued, welcomed, and at home.

AMIT GARG

Building Trust and Empowering Businesses in the Fraser Valley

For Amit Garg, banking has always been about people before numbers. His professional path began with a Bachelor of Commerce and postgraduate studies in Hotel Management in Switzerland, leading him into the world of hospitality and later insurance. But when he discovered commercial banking, he found the perfect balance between his financial expertise and his passion for helping people succeed.

Since moving to Canada from India in 2003, Amit has experienced firsthand the challenges that many newcomers and small business owners face. That journey shaped his empathetic and community-centered approach to leadership. “I always tell my clients they can call me anytime,” he says, believing that financial decisions don’t fit neatly into office hours. For him, availability, trust, and genuine care turn clients into longterm partners.

After 14 fulfilling years with RBC, Amit joined National Bank in 2022 as AVP Commercial Sales for the West Fraser Valley District. In 2024, he helped bring over $150 million in lending to the bank, supporting small and medium-sized businesses across the region. He’s on a trajectory to do even better in 2025. At the Strawberry Hills Branch, he leads by example, creating an environment where his team feels empowered and clients feel heard.

Beyond banking, Amit sees himself as a connector in Surrey and the Fraser Valley — mentoring newcomers, supporting local

businesses, and engaging with the community he now proudly calls home. Looking ahead, he believes the future of commercial sales lies in blending technology with the human touch, while always keeping relationships at the heart of it all.

For young professionals, his message is simple: focus on people, lead with integrity, and never stop learning.

Sidhant’s path followed a different passion: food. With a heart for hospitality, he launched his own restaurant and catering business, creating dishes that carry not just flavor but warmth. For him, cooking is storytelling—each plate an expression of love, every guest treated like family.

Together, Tanu and Sidhant are more than business owners—they are community builders, partners in life and work, and a shining reminder that when love and purpose align, extraordinary things happen.

Anju Bedi

A Journey of Strings, Soul, and Strength

For Anju Bedi, the sitar is more than an instrument—it is a voice that speaks directly to the heart. Her journey with classical Indian music began at the age of 15, when she first held the sitar after being captivated by its hauntingly beautiful sound. What started as learning notes soon became a lifelong devotion, a form of self-expression, and a pathway to peace.

Anju’s musical story has been shaped by both personal challenges and transformative moments. One such turning point came when a close friend encouraged her to play at her daughter’s wedding. After years away from performing, she rediscovered her passion the moment her fingers touched the strings. Another powerful memory is of a bride’s mother embracing her mid-performance, tears in her eyes, reminding Anju of music’s power to connect beyond words.

As a female musician, Anju brings a unique emotional depth to her performances. She believes women naturally infuse life experiences into their art, and audiences often describe her music as something they can “feel.” Yet her path was not without obstacles. Growing up in India, public performance was discouraged for girls. Later, in Canada, family responsibilities often took priority over her art. For years, music was set aside. But with the encouragement of friends and her own determination, she reclaimed her passion—proof that it is never too late to follow a dream.

Today, Anju balances her roles as a professional, mother, and grandmother while keeping music at the core of

her life. Whether practicing late into the night or playing for her grandchildren, she finds joy in weaving music into everyday moments. She also gives back through mentorship, performances at International Women’s Day events with Shakti Society, and collaborations with the India Mahila Association. Her presence on stage inspires women of all ages, showing that they too can pursue music regardless of age or circumstance.

Deeply rooted in Indian classical traditions, Anju’s artistry is also enriched by her Canadian experience. She loves introducing the sitar to diverse audiences, bridging cultures with every performance. For her, inclusivity means creating spaces where women feel welcomed and confident to step into music—whether through mentorship, workshops, or shared performances.

Looking forward, Anju hopes to expand opportunities for women in classical music and continue blending tradition with inclusivity. Her message to aspiring young women is simple yet powerful: “Don’t wait for the right time— start now. Be patient, keep practicing, and never lose your passion.”

Let’s un-do the boring and Fun-do the fun

Undo Fundo was born from a simple idea — to break the monotony of everyday life and bring back the fun. The name reflects this philosophy: “Undo” means shaking off dull routines, while “Fundo,” meaning “foundation” in Portuguese, symbolizes creating a new base for joy. Together, it’s a reminder that the ordinary can be flipped upside down and transformed into something brighter, quirkier, and more exciting. The vision is simple: turn everyday essentials into moments of happiness, whether it’s sipping coffee, writing notes, gifting friends, or decorating a home.

For founder Vishal Khurana, building Undo Fundo is guided by the same philosophy he applies to life and business: create real value, deliver more than expected, and stay consistent. His motto — “Build with integrity, grow with consistency” — defines both his entrepreneurial journey and the brand’s foundation. Numbers may be his playground,

from analyzing the stock market to navigating real estate, but Vishal believes a strong mind needs a strong body. He makes time for the gym, enjoys swimming, and plays badminton to stay active and energized, habits that keep him sharp for every new challenge.

Undo Fundo isn’t just another home and gift shop. It’s a curated playground where every product is chosen to spark a smile, start a conversation, or make a memory. From whimsical kitchenware and playful stationery to thoughtful gifts and pet accessories, it’s designed to bring fun and function together. Walking in feels like stepping into a burst of creativity, where shopping becomes a treasure hunt and a joyful escape.

But for Vishal, Undo Fundo is more than a store — it’s a neighbor. The brand supports local creators, hosts pop-ups, and partners with charities to spread joy in shelters, schools, and

community spaces. In the short term, the goal is to build a loyal community of customers who see Undo Fundo as their happy place. In the long term, the dream is to expand across Canada and beyond, creating a recognizable brand that embodies the spirit of “fun living.”

Vishal’s advice to his younger self echoes in Undo Fundo’s mission: “Stop chasing shortcuts. Focus on creating value, and let time do its compounding.”

JAGRUP BRAR CHAMPION FOR SURREY-FLEETWOOD

For nearly two decades, Jagrup Brar has been a tireless advocate for Surrey-Fleetwood, serving as MLA since 2004 and building a reputation for integrity, accessibility, and unwavering commitment to his community. Now in his sixth term, Jagrup continues to shape Surrey’s future with a clear vision: ensuring families, seniors, youth, and newcomers thrive in one of the fastest-growing regions of British Columbia.

Jagrup’s leadership has delivered historic investments in education. Over the last eight years, the Province has committed more than $1 billion to Surrey schools, creating more than 16,200 new student spaces and 4,000 seismically safer seats. Since 2017, over 10,000 new student seats have opened, with another 6,000 currently underway—a transformation that ensures Surrey’s young people have access to safe, modern learning environments.

Health care is another cornerstone of his work. Jagrup has been a driving force behind the new Surrey hospital and cancer care centre, as well as the announcement of the first medical school in Western Canada at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus—a

groundbreaking investment that will train future doctors close to home.

Transportation has also seen historic progress under Jagrup’s watch. He has championed the SkyTrain expansion into Fleetwood, with three new stations under construction that will ease commutes, connect communities, and unlock new opportunities for local businesses and families alike.

Housing affordability and smart community growth are at the heart of his advocacy. Jagrup has supported projects that bring new homes, retail spaces, and vital services to Fleetwood, ensuring that growth meets the needs of current and future residents. New Stops and modernized infrastructure are strengthening local connections, making Surrey-Fleetwood not just a place to live, but a place to flourish.

Jagrup’s approach to leadership is

deeply personal. He is known for being present, approachable, and committed to listening. As Dean Barbour, Executive Director of the Fleetwood Business Improvement Association, notes: “Jagrup is always available for the Fleetwood community. Whether it’s supporting local businesses, advocating for safety, or celebrating cultural events, he makes himself accessible and ensures our voices are heard.”

At the provincial level, Jagrup has served in key roles, including Minister of State for Trade and most recently Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals, representing British Columbia on both national and international platforms. FRONTLINE ADVOCATE AWARD SURREY POLICE SERVICE

In every community, there are individuals who step forward with quiet strength, carrying the responsibility of protecting others while building trust and compassion along the way. Within Surrey Police Service, three such officers stand out — Constables Manpreet Nijjer, Gideon Damong, and Jared Cebryk. Each of them brings a unique journey, yet together, they embody the heart of frontline service.

For Constable Manpreet Nijjer, the path to policing has always been about connection. Born and raised in Richmond, she represents not only the professionalism of her role but also the diversity of the community she serves. Over the past three years with Surrey Police Service, she has become a role model for young women, especially South Asian girls who see themselves reflected in her. For Manpreet, empathy is as important as enforcement — she ensures that every interaction carries respect and dignity, reinforcing

the message that policing is about people first.

Constable Gideon Damong’s story is one of perseverance and resilience. Born in the Philippines and immigrating to Canada at the age of eight, he grew up with a deep appreciation for opportunity and service. Before joining Surrey Police Service, Gideon spent seven years as a corrections officer, a role that shaped his commitment to fairness, accountability, and the rehabilitation of others. His transition to policing reflects his belief in giving back to the community that welcomed him and his family. Today, Gideon is known for his calm leadership and integrity, qualities that earn him the trust of both his colleagues and the people he serves.

With nearly a decade in uniform, Constable Jared Cebryk brings experience and steady presence to the frontline. His career began in 2015 with the RCMP, where he

trained at Depot in Regina before being posted to Surrey. For more than five years, he served in General Duty, responding to calls and gaining firsthand insight into the challenges of community policing. When Surrey Police Service launched, Jared was among the first to make the transition, helping to establish a new chapter in the city’s policing history. His professionalism, resilience, and commitment to teamwork reflect his belief that strong communities are built through trust and collaboration.

Together, Constables Nijjer, Damong, and Cebryk exemplify courage, integrity, and dedication. Their stories are different, yet their shared purpose is the same: to protect, serve, and stand as trusted pillars of the community. They remind us that behind the badge are individuals whose journeys shape not only their service but also the future of policing in Surrey.

EMERGING BUSINESS AWARD AMAN KHINDA

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Abbotsford, BC, Aman grew up navigating the intersection of two very different worlds. From an early age, creativity became her constant—drawing and visual expression were her outlets when words didn’t suffice. Whether through art, fashion, or storytelling, she found ways to reflect her emotions and unique perspective. This deep-rooted passion carried her through school and led her to complete a business degree at the University of the Fraser Valley. But despite the practicality of her academic path, she couldn’t shake her artistic calling.

In 2019, she made a bold decision to return to school and formally study graphic design. By June 2020, amid the uncertainty of the pandemic, she launched her own creative studio. What could have been a setback became an unexpected opportunity. As businesses shifted to online platforms, they began to recognize

the value of intentional branding and digital design. Aman stepped into that gap, helping others bring their visions to life while building her own.

That same year, she also moved out on her own, embarking on a journey toward personal independence, growth, and healing. Her career and self-discovery evolved side by side, rooted in resilience, purpose, and the courage to create.

A major turning point in her journey came after facing workplace harassment in a role she once believed was her dream job. Though painful, it became a catalyst— pushing her to pivot, redefine her worth, and reclaim her power through entrepreneurship.

Today, Aman is a Brand Consultant and Designer, as well as the Business Manager for Tarannum Thind, host of Chai With T, North America’s #1 South Asian podcast. She has helped over 80 brands launch, rebrand, or

scale across industries—combining strategy, design, and storytelling to make lasting impact.

Some of her proudest achievements include rebranding Chai With T, now viewed by over 28 million people, and designing campaigns for visionary entrepreneurs like Gina Judge, Jayna Marie, Shannon Mann, and Raji Khaira.

She’s been invited to brand events in Los Angeles and Toronto, showcased her henna work in an art gallery, and continues to serve on UFV’s Senate and Alumni Association, now in her third term.

As a South Asian woman in business, she’s been underestimated—but what her family once called “anger,” she now owns as passion. Looking ahead, Aman is committed to elevating entrepreneurs, building meaningful brands, and leaving a legacy rooted in kindness, creativity, and empowerment.

After moving to Surrey at age eight, she endured a challenging home life due to her stepfather’s alcoholism and abuse. By 18, she was homeless and forced to navigate adulthood alone. Over the past five years, The MMG has impacted over a million women worldwide through social media, mentorship, courses, and live events—most notably The Rich Girl Summit, Canada’s largest personal finance and networking event for women, proudly sponsored by BMO.

In addition to her role as a financial educator, Gina is a licensed mortgage broker through UBC

EXCELLENCE IN ARTS & CULTURE AWARD NEESHA HOTHI

Neesha Hothi describes herself as a cultural advocate and creative sector strategist, but her journey began long before those titles were attached to her name. First generation Canadian growing up in the Lower Mainland , she was constantly navigating between two cultures, a duality that shaped her life’s purpose: ensuring South Asian voices are not only represented but celebrated as part of Canada’s cultural identity.

From an early age, Neesha was drawn to entertainment, live events, and storytelling. In high school, she would confidently say she wanted to pursue marketing, even without fully knowing what it meant. What she did know was that she loved bringing people together and celebrating her South Asian heritage. Inspired by her father’s love of film and music, her home was alive with Bollywood soundtracks, Qawwali, Punjabi folk, and pop. Family outings to concerts and film screenings sparked her

fascination with performance and culture—passions that would later become the foundation of her career.

A defining chapter came in 2010 during the Vancouver Olympics, where she worked as Event and PR Manager for the Olympic Superstore. Helping to get the now-iconic red mittens on Oprah’s show remains a career highlight, proof of how cultural storytelling can resonate globally. Soon after, Neesha launched Neesh Communications, one of Canada’s only South Asian–focused entertainment storytelling firms. Through initiatives like India Live, Bollywood Under the Stars, and leading the Marketing for the Vancouver JUNOS, as well as helping launch the South Asian Music Accelerator (SAMA), she has helped build infrastructure for cultural visibility and long-lasting impact.

Her journey has not been without challenges. Often the only South Asian woman in professional rooms,

Neesha had to assert her value, sometimes facing dismissive labels. Even within her own community, strategic communications was not always understood as a legitimate career path. She overcame these challenges through resilience, persistence, and by creating platforms where none existed.

Neesha credits her family as her strongest support system, even when they didn’t fully understand her work, and draws inspiration from her community—from elders preserving traditions to youth pushing creative boundaries. Looking ahead, her vision is to ensure South Asian music, arts, and stories are recognized not as “other,” but as essential to Canadian identity, leaving legacies and platforms for future generations to inherit with pride.

BUSINESSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD JAS OBEROI

Jas Oberoi’s journey is one of resilience, risk-taking, and relentless drive. Growing up in India in an entrepreneurial family, life was comfortable until tragedy struck at 19 when he lost his father. Overnight, the responsibility of supporting his mother and sister fell squarely on his shoulders. That defining moment forced him to grow up quickly and instilled in him the determination that continues to shape his career today.

Canada was always Jas’s dream—a land where ambition could become reality. But his early days were far from easy. The job he was promised didn’t exist, leaving him without a support system. Survival meant taking his first job as a server in a Surrey restaurant. Those humble beginnings built his resilience and resourcefulness, qualities that still fuel his approach to business and life.

Hospitality became Jas’s training ground. He mastered the art of

connection, handling pressure, and creating experiences. Even after successfully owning a restaurant, he recognized he had hit a ceiling. At 36, he made the bold decision to transition into real estate, despite having no sales background. For him, real estate was never about sales—it was about service. Taking care of clients and earning trust became his formula for success.

The challenges were steep. With a young family to provide for and no market experience, Jas was competing against seasoned agents. Yet he bet on himself—outworking his peers, embracing change, and constantly finding ways to stand out. This grit and adaptability laid the foundation for what would become the Jas Oberoi Group, one of the most recognized real estate teams in Surrey and the Fraser Valley.

Jas built his business like a corporation, grounded in systems, discipline, and reputation. His focus

on relationships over transactions attracted a team that shared his values of service and results. Together, they expanded their vision to Oberizon Homes, where they build not just houses but communities defined by quality and care.

Over the years, Jas has earned numerous awards, each representing the collective effort of his team. For him, recognition is both validation and motivation—a reminder of how far he has come and a push to set new goals. His message to aspiring professionals is clear: real estate is not about chasing commissions but about creating lasting value, building systems, and daring to think differently.

SAMRAT BUILDING SUPPLY.. A Legacy of Growth & Vision

The Story of Samrat Building Supply

Every successful business begins with a vision—and for Parm and Amy, that vision has always been deeply rooted in perseverance, family, and a strong sense of community.

Before launching their own ventures, Parm and Amy each brought years of hands-on experience in construction, insulation, and operations. That expertise laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Metro Standard Insulation Ltd., a company that quickly rose to prominence throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Known for their unmatched work ethic, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to quality, the couple earned a reputation that many in the industry aspire to emulate. Over time, their name became synonymous with reliability, professionalism, and service excellence.

But even with over 15 years of success behind them, Parm felt there was still more to achieve. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to grow, fueled by a desire to create something that could go beyond just one segment of the industry.

“In 2020, I wanted to create something that could be found in every household,” Parm recalls. “I started researching,

importing, and exploring ways we could expand beyond insulation. That’s when the idea for Samrat Trade was born.”

The name “Samrat” carries significant meaning and speaks volumes about the ambition behind the brand. “In India, ‘Samrat’ means to reign or to have a raaj over an industry,” Amy explains. “That’s the legacy we wanted to build—not just another business, but a brand that would lead with vision, strength, and long-term purpose.”

With that mission in mind, the family launched Samrat Trade, and soon after, it began gaining traction in the marketplace. Customers appreciated not only the quality of products but also the values and integrity behind the company. As the business grew, so did the demand for a more personal, community-based experience. Customers weren’t just looking for products—they were looking for a relationship.

“People wanted a place where they could walk in, feel welcome, and connect with us face to face,” Amy says. “We heard that call, and that’s when we decided to open Samrat Building Supply.”

Launched just last year, Samrat Building Suppl has already become a go-to destination for homeowners,

contractors, and builders alike. What sets the store apart isn’t just its inventory—it’s the feeling customers get when they walk through the doors. The space was designed with the same values that built their earlier success: trust, accessibility, and personalized service.

With Parm serving as Founder and CEO, Amy stepping in as Chief Operating Officer, and now their son Balraj joining the business in his first official role, Samrat is more than just a company—it’s a growing family legacy. Each member brings unique strengths to the table, contributing to a shared mission that’s as personal as it is professional.

For the family, growth isn’t measured solely by numbers or expansion. It’s about making a lasting impact. “We want every client to feel supported,” Amy emphasizes. “That’s why we

We work so hard to maintain quality and consistency. Our clients’ expectations keep us moving forward - Amy “

work so hard to maintain quality and consistency. Our clients’ trust keeps us striving for more.”

Looking ahead, the family has no plans of slowing down. Parm’s forward-thinking vision now includes launching a manufacturing line for steel products—a bold step that would allow the business to become vertically integrated and expand its footprint nationally.

“Our goal is to position Samrat as one of the best building supply providers in all of Canada,” Parm states confidently. “It’s about more than products. It’s about leadership, innovation, and building something future generations can be proud of.”

From insulation and construction to manufacturing and retail, Parm, Amy, and Balraj are shaping more than just a business—they’re shaping a legacy grounded in resilience, family values, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. With every new venture, they move one step closer to becoming a household name—one rooted in trust, quality, and purpose.

According to Ayurveda, nature has gifted us eight natural doctors that help maintain our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The relationship between humans and nature is deep, sacred, and timeless. We are born in the lap of nature, we grow within its nurturing embrace, and ultimately, we return to it. Nature not only gives us life but also provides the tools to preserve it.

Ayurveda teaches that the human body is composed of Panchmahabhutas—the five great elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements do not just form our physical body, but they also help heal and maintain it. Ayurveda encourages us to live in alignment with nature’s wisdom, and in doing so, we can prevent disease and live a long, balanced life.

Let us now explore the eight natural doctors that nature has provided us:

Air – The Breath of Life

The Eight Natural Doctors According to Ayurveda

Air is our first connection with life— from the moment we are born, we begin to breathe. In the ancient Indian scriptures, air (Vayu) is referred to as nectar and a life-giving force. Fresh, clean air is essential for the functioning of every organ in the body. Morning air, in particular, is rich in oxygen and negative ions, which invigorate the lungs, boost mental clarity, sharpen the senses, and improve mood. It enhances the functioning of the brain, supports healthy lungs, and lifts our spirits. Deep breathing and regular exposure to fresh air reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue.

Food – Fuel for the Body

Food nourishes every cell in our body. According to Ayurveda, food is considered medicine when consumed mindfully. Overeating, eating the wrong foods, or improper

timing can turn food into a source of disease. A well-known Ayurvedic principle advises: “Half of the stomach should be filled with food, one-fourth with water, and the remaining one-fourth left empty for air and digestion.”

A simple, balanced, and nutritious diet supports longevity, strength, and vitality. Food that is fresh, seasonal, and minimally processed is ideal. Eating with gratitude and in peaceful surroundings further enhances digestion.

Water – The Elixir of Life

Water is essential for every function in the human body—from digestion to circulation, detoxification, and joint lubrication. Ayurveda strongly recommends drinking water first thing in the morning, especially warm water, to flush out toxins and stimulate digestion.

An ancient Ayurvedic verse states: “He who drinks eight handfuls of water on an empty stomach in the morning lives over a hundred years, free from disease.”

Warm water aids metabolism, clears the digestive tract, hydrates tissues, and supports healthy skin.

Fasting – A Time for Healing

Fasting, when done correctly, is a natural way to rest and detoxify the body. It gives the digestive system a break and allows the liver and other organs to flush out accumulated toxins. Fasting also improves mental clarity, enhances metabolism, and supports the body’s natural healing processes.

Rather than being seen as starvation, fasting in Ayurveda is a conscious practice of restraint and discipline. Intermittent fasting or periodic fasting days can strengthen digestion and promote overall health.

Sun – The Source of Energy

The Sun (Surya) is essential for life on Earth. It provides light, warmth, and energy. Sunlight stimulates the

production of Vitamin D, strengthens the immune system, improves mood, and supports bone health. Early morning sunlight, in particular, is beneficial as it is gentle and helps regulate the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm).

Sunbathing in moderation, preferably before 10 AM, supports good health by killing harmful germs and enhancing vitality.

Exercise – Movement is Medicine

Regular physical activity strengthens muscles, boosts circulation, supports digestion, and improves mental well-being. According to Ayurveda, “Vyayam” (exercise) ignites the digestive fire (Agni) and helps balance the doshas (body energies). Exercise also prevents obesity, manages stress, and improves sleep quality.

Even simple activities like walking, yoga, or stretching have powerful effects on health.

Thinking – The Power of the Mind

Our thoughts shape our reality. Positive, compassionate, and constructive thinking enhances mental health and emotional resilience.

Ayurveda emphasizes the connection between mind and body—what we think, we become.

Negative thoughts lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical illness. In contrast, pure and optimistic thinking strengthens the mind and promotes peace, confidence, and clarity.

Sleep – Rest for Renewal

Sleep is essential for healing and repair. Ayurveda teaches that proper sleep at the right time (preferably before 10 PM) is crucial for balancing the body’s functions. A classical Ayurvedic verse says: “Proper sleep improves digestion, enhances strength and immunity, and brings mental peace.”

Sleep supports brain function, hormonal balance, emotional wellbeing, and physical recovery.

LURKING LAST BREATH

A van from the homeless shelter stopped in front of the court and an elderly lady on the wheelchair slowly started moving inside the court premises. Her fingers were crooked, bent and swollen at the knuckles. Out of sheer curiosity I followed the lady, she sat on a bench, I politely asked her, “Respectable Mother! After all what calamity has befallen that you are here to appear in the court?”

She remained silent, then wiping her eyes with a hanky, she opened up, “Dear Son! Go your way and mind your own business, why waste your time.”

“You are just like my grandmom! You seem to be in trouble, I am compelled to ask you about your misfortune, and I see you all alone.” After a short while, I added, “I am a journalist, I’ll let people know of your sad story.”

She looked at me with a glimmer of hope, “Dear son, it’s about pains, the pains inflicted by my own kins, it is a long story.” Clearing her throat with a slight cough, she continued, “Ours was a very happy, comfortable and carefree life. I was living here in Vancouver with my husband, son

and his family.” Then heaving a deep long sigh she said, “Husband died of cancer, daughter-in-law and son started putting pressure on me that we sell this house and buy a bigger house in Surrey. I tried my best to dissuade them from doing this, but their decision was to prevail. They bought the house in their own names and gave me basement to live.”

“Didn’t they let you live with them? Considering your disability how would you be cooking your food?”

“Don’t ask of this, it wasn’t their problem, rather they used to dump unused household stuff in the basement. I shouted myself hoarse, but they paid a deaf ear to all this.”

“Oh……!”

“Once they came to dump old mattresses, I protested and shut the door, daughter-in-law called the police and complained, “This lady living on our property is bothering us.”

“Oh my God! Didn’t they feel ashamed of their behaviour, didn’t they think of the backlash of the community?”

“In these countries, what would the people say, is of no consideration. Police took me to a shelter home and told me that if you don’t have the papers for the property, go to court and try to get your claim.”

She heaved a deep sigh, wiped her tears and spoke, “At this old age, it’s very difficult to walk even, nor can I sign, not to talk of physical pains, my son sitting there, might be surmising when this old lady is going to have her last breath.”

Diwali Starts Within A Festive Season Self-Care Guide

When Everything Feels a Bit Too Much

As Diwali approaches, we’re surrounded by lights, shopping, invites and expectations. It’s beautiful but also a lot. Many of us feel scattered, drained or quietly anxious while trying to “keep up.” It’s not just the workload. It’s the pressure to be happy, glowing, social and sorted all at once.

Start with Your Breath, Not Your To-Do List

But what if you didn’t have to try so hard this year? In yoga, we say your energy flows where your attention goes. During festival season, our attention is often pulled in 10 different directions. No wonder we feel tired even before the celebrations begin. This isn’t a mindset issue. It’s a nervous system issue. Festive self-care isn’t about

pampering. It’s about balancing your inner energy, so you feel lighter emotionally, mentally and physically. Start with what’s real your breath, your body, your awareness.

Abhyanga: The Forgotten Ritual

A beautiful Indian ritual abhyanga, or oil massage is one of the most healing ways to come back to your body. Warm sesame oil or coconut oil, rubbed into your skin before a shower, grounds your nervous system, improves sleep, and builds immunity. Ayurveda sees this as an act of sneha which means both “oil” and “love.”

Clear the Inner Clutter Too

We clean our homes for Diwali. But what about the emotional mess inside? Take 5 minutes to journal what’s weighing you down —

tension with someone, a feeling you

camphor. Light a diya. Say a mantra. This isn’t about religion it’s about resetting your inner environment so you can feel lighter.

Everything shared here from breath awareness to abhyanga, movement, and mantra comes from the roots of yoga. Not the version you see only on mats or social media, but the original yoga: a way of living in tune with your body, your energy, and your truth.

Move Gently, Move Daily

You don’t need a full workout. You just need to move the stuck energy. A short walk after meals, a few rounds of Surya Namaskar or simple fascia stretches to release stiffness it all helps. Movement doesn’t just tone muscles it clears heaviness from the mind.

Festivals Are for Recharging, Not Just Performing

Somewhere along the way, we’ve turned festivals into performance. But the deeper purpose of Diwali is to return to your own light. Do the outer prep but don’t skip the inner recharge. The real glow starts inside.

MORE THAN JUST LIKES AND SHARES

In today’s fast-paced digital world, social media has transformed from a place for personal connections to a critical tool for business success. Whether you’re running a startup, a local shop, or a global brand, an effective social media presence can significantly boost your visibility, credibility, and bottom line.

Enhancing Visibility and Brand Awareness

Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) allow businesses to reach a vast audience at minimal cost. With billions of users worldwide, these platforms offer unparalleled exposure. By sharing consistent, visually appealing, and relevant content, businesses can increase brand recognition and attract new followers who may become loyal customers.

Strengthening Customer Relationships

Unlike traditional advertising, social media encourages two-way communication. Businesses can

interact directly with their audience through comments, direct messages, polls, and live sessions. These conversations humanize the brand and create a sense of community. When customers feel heard and valued, they are more likely to trust your brand and become repeat buyers or advocates.

Affordable and Targeted Advertising

One of the most attractive features of social media marketing is its cost-effectiveness. Platforms offer advanced targeting options that let businesses reach specific demographics based on age, location, interests, and behavior. Even with modest budgets, companies can run effective ad campaigns and promote content to precisely the right audience, increasing conversion rates and maximizing return on investment.

Real-Time Insights and Market Understanding

Social media also functions as a powerful feedback and research

tool. Analytics dashboards provide real-time data on content performance, engagement, and audience behavior. These insights help businesses understand what resonates with their audience, finetune their content strategy, and stay ahead of competitors.

Establishing Authority and Industry Leadership

Sharing valuable content—such as expert advice, educational posts, success stories, or behind-the-scenes glimpses—positions your business as a knowledgeable and trustworthy voice in your industry. Over time, this builds thought leadership and fosters a deeper connection with your audience.

Social media is no longer a luxury for businesses—it’s a necessity. With the right strategy, creativity, and consistency, it can be a powerful tool to build your brand, grow your audience, and create lasting customer relationships. In a digitalfirst world, showing up on social media isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Optional variations:

4. Smooth the top, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4–6 hours (or overnight) to let the flavors meld and the dessert firm up.

5. Before serving, dust generously with cocoa powder and sprinkle chocolate shavings for extra indulgence.

Eating out is one of life’s simple joys. Whether it’s a casual lunch with friends, a romantic dinner, or exploring new cuisines during travel, restaurants provide experiences that home-cooked meals sometimes can’t match. However, eating out frequently can quickly become expensive and impact your financial goals if you’re not careful.

But don’t worry—you don’t have to give up enjoying your favorite restaurants to keep your finances healthy. The key lies in finding balance. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you relish dining out while staying in control of your spending.

Set a Realistic Monthly Budget for Eating Out

Budgeting is the foundation of financial wellness. Start by determining how much you want to spend on dining out each month.

Eating Out

Enjoy Delicious Meals Without Breaking Your Budget

Look at your income and expenses, then decide on a figure that won’t derail your savings or bills.

For example, if you decide on $150 a month, that might mean eating out three to four times depending on the average cost per meal. Use budgeting apps like Mint, YNAB, or simply a spreadsheet to track this spending. This discipline ensures you enjoy without guilt or overspending.

Plan Your Dining Out Occasions

Instead of eating out spontaneously, schedule it. Decide in advance which days or events warrant dining out— maybe a Friday night treat, weekend brunch, or a date night. Planning ahead helps you mentally allocate funds and reduces the temptation of unplanned expensive meals.

For example, if you know you’re dining out Friday night, you might

pack lunch for work that day to balance your budget.

Discover Affordable and Quality Options

Eating out doesn’t always mean fine dining or expensive spots. Great food can be found in smaller, local places, food trucks, ethnic restaurants, or casual cafes that offer delicious meals at lower prices.

Try exploring weekly specials, food markets, or lunch menus, which are often more affordable than dinner offerings. This way, you enjoy variety and quality without overspending.

Use Promotions, Loyalty Programs, and Apps

Many restaurants offer discounts during off-peak hours, special deals on certain days, or loyalty rewards for frequent customers. Sign up for these programs and watch out for limited-time offers on platforms like

Groupon, OpenTable, or your favorite restaurant’s newsletter.

For example, “happy hour” drinks and appetizers can give you a taste of the restaurant’s menu at a fraction of the cost.

Be Smart About Portions and Extras

Restaurant portions can be large. Sharing dishes with friends or ordering appetizers instead of main courses can save money and reduce food waste. Also, extras like sides, drinks, and desserts add up quickly—consider skipping some or sharing to keep the bill manageable.

For example, sharing a pasta dish and ordering a side salad might satisfy you and cost less than two full entrees.

Watch Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol can easily double or triple your dining bill. If you want to indulge, limit yourself to one or two drinks or share a bottle of wine if dining with others. Alternatively, opt for water or non-alcoholic beverages to cut costs.

Remember, skipping the alcohol doesn’t diminish the meal’s enjoyment—it often helps you feel better the next day too!

Consider Paying with Cash

Paying with cash can psychologically help curb overspending. Withdraw your monthly dining out budget in cash and stick to it. Once the cash is gone, you avoid the temptation of swiping your card for extra meals or snacks.

This tactile approach makes spending feel more real and helps you become more conscious of your choices.

Balance Eating Out with Cooking at Home

One of the best ways to keep your

dining out budget healthy is to cook more meals at home. Home cooking is usually cheaper, healthier, and gives you more control over ingredients and portions.

Meal prepping can save time on busy days, reducing the urge to order takeout out of convenience. Make eating out a special treat rather than an everyday habit.

Practice Mindful Eating and Spending

Before ordering or deciding to eat out, ask yourself if you’re genuinely hungry or just seeking convenience, boredom relief, or social interaction. Mindfulness around why and when you eat out can reduce unnecessary expenses and help you develop healthier eating habits.

For instance, if it’s boredom or stress driving you to order dinner, consider alternatives like a walk or a hobby to refocus.

Review and Reflect on Your Spending

At the end of each month, review your eating out expenses. Were the meals worth the money? Did you stay within your budget? Reflecting helps you understand your patterns and make adjustments for the future.

If you find that dining out is causing stress about money, it may be time to reduce frequency or try more budget-friendly options.

Eating out should be a joyful experience—not a financial burden. By budgeting, planning, and making mindful choices, you can savor delicious meals, enjoy social moments, and maintain control over your finances.

Remember: it’s about balance, not deprivation. Treat yourself occasionally, but keep your spending aligned with your bigger financial goals.

Chocolate Barfi

Perfect for Diwali or any festive occasion

Ingredients:

1 cup milk powder

½ cup condensed milk

¼ cup milk

1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

½ teaspoon cardamom powder (optional)

Chopped nuts (pistachios, almonds) for garnish

Instructions:

1. Grease a small square/rectangular tray or plate with ghee, or line it with parchment paper.

2. In a non-stick pan, heat 1 tablespoon ghee on low flame. Add the milk, condensed milk, and milk powder. Mix well to remove lumps.

3. Cook the mixture on low heat, stirring constantly. It will start to thicken into a soft dough-like texture (around 7–8 minutes). When it starts to leave the sides of the pan, turn off the heat.

4. Divide the cooked mixture into two equal parts. Keep one part aside for the white (milk) layer.

5. To the second portion, add cocoa powder. Mix well until fully combined. You can return it to the pan for 1–2 minutes to help it blend smoothly.

6. Press the chocolate layer into the greased tray evenly. Then press the white/milk layer on top. Smooth out with a spatula or the back of a spoon.

7. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top and gently press them in.

8. Let it cool at room temperature or refrigerate for 1 hour until set. Cut into squares or diamonds with a sharp knife.

Lighting the Way How Men’s Mental Health Ties into the Spirit of Diwali

Diwali is more than a festival of lights. It is a celebration of hope, renewal, and the victory of light over darkness. For many, it is a time to gather with family, enjoy traditions, and reflect on new beginnings. But as I reflect on Diwali this year, I can’t help but speak about the mental health crisis affecting our fathers, brothers, and sons, a struggle too many in our community continue to face in silence.

For generations, men have been told to be strong, to hide their emotions, and to “man up” in the face of struggle. This silent expectation has created a culture where many men carry their battles alone, battles with stress, depression, broken relationships, and unhealthy coping habits. Too often, these struggles remain in the dark, unseen and unspoken.

I know this personally. For years, I kept everything inside, not because I thought I was weak, but because I didn’t feel worthy of asking for help. I thought that was just how life was supposed to be: carry the weight quietly and keep moving forward.

But that is not living, that is just surviving. On the outside, I looked like I had it together, but inside I was struggling with anxiety, selfdoubt, and the pressure to always be enough.

There were many moments when I questioned if speaking up would even make a difference. I told myself, “Why bother? This is just life.” But the truth is, carrying that silence only made the darkness heavier. The turning point for me came when I shared my struggles for the first time and realized I wasn’t alone. That single step didn’t erase the pain, but it gave me hope, and hope is what Diwali is all about.

It wasn’t until I began to open up and have real conversations, sometimes uncomfortable but honest, that I started to heal. And that is when I realized something powerful: strength doesn’t come from silence; it comes from honesty.

And that is exactly what Diwali teaches us. Even the smallest light can break through the heaviest darkness. Just as a single lamp

brightens a room, a man’s first step toward honesty and vulnerability can begin to shift his entire life. Healing doesn’t happen all at once, it starts with one honest conversation, one safe space, one moment of courage.

Diwali is also a festival of community. We celebrate together, reminding ourselves that light multiplies when it is shared. The same is true for mental health. Men don’t heal in isolation; we heal in connection. When one man opens up, he gives others permission to do the same. When families and friends listen with compassion, they help lift the weight of silence.

This Diwali, as we share light to honor new beginnings, let’s also light the path toward emotional openness and resilience. Let’s create spaces where men no longer feel they must hide in the shadows of stigma but instead can step into the light of healing.

Because the truth is, healing starts with honesty. And when men begin to show up as their true selves, we all become stronger together.

IN-VIVO EXPOSURE THERAPY IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE

Anxiety, phobias, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are conditions that can significantly interfere with daily functioning. A common theme across these challenges is avoidance. People naturally steer clear of situations or environments that trigger discomfort; crowded spaces, driving after an accident, or activities associated with painful memories. While avoidance brings short-term relief, it reinforces fear in the long run and prevents individuals from engaging in meaningful activities.

In-vivo exposure therapy directly targets this cycle. Instead of avoiding feared situations, clients gradually and systematically face them in real-life contexts, with professional

support. Repeated, safe exposure helps the brain re-learn that these situations are not as threatening as anticipated. Over time, fear responses lessen, confidence grows, and participation in daily life improves.

The Occupational Therapy Advantage Occupational therapists (OTs) are uniquely positioned to deliver in-vivo exposure. Unlike therapies that focus solely on symptom reduction, OT is rooted in enabling people to take part in meaningful “occupations”; the roles, routines, and activities

that give life structure and purpose. This perspective ensures that exposure is not an abstract exercise but directly tied to the client’s goals.

A Structured Approach

The process of in-vivo exposure within OT generally follows four key stages:

1. Goal setting: Identifying activities the client wants or needs to do but currently avoids.

2. Hierarchy building: Breaking the feared occupation into smaller, graded steps, from least to most challenging.

3. Guided practice: Supporting the client as they face these steps, often beginning with therapist presence.

4. Reflection and progression: Reviewing successes, reinforcing coping strategies, and moving forward as confidence increases. This structured, graded method strikes a balance; challenging enough to promote growth, but paced to ensure success and build momentum.

Consider a parent with social anxiety who avoids attending their child’s school events. An OT might begin by helping them step briefly into the school lobby, progress to sitting through part of an event, and eventually support them in confidently attending a full assembly. For someone who fears using public transit after a panic episode, the process might start with standing

near a bus stop, then taking a onestop ride, and later commuting independently. Each step is practical, relevant, and guided by the person’s own priorities.

Why It Works

In-vivo exposure has been shown across decades of clinical use to be highly effective for reducing fear and avoidance in conditions such as phobias, OCD, and PTSD. More recently, it has also been applied in chronic pain rehabilitation, where fear of movement can be as disabling as pain itself. What makes the approach especially powerful in occupational therapy is its translation into everyday life. Gains achieved

through exposure are not limited to symptom relief; they enable people to re-engage in the roles and routines they value.

Reclaiming Daily Life

The goal of occupational therapy is not only to treat symptoms but to help people participate in life fully. In-vivo exposure aligns perfectly with this mission. By facing fears in real contexts, clients learn not just to manage anxiety but to reclaim independence, whether that means returning to work, reconnecting with family and community, or resuming leisure pursuits.

At its heart, in-vivo exposure in occupational therapy is about transformation, turning avoidance into participation, fear into confidence, and limitations into opportunities for growth.

BREAKING THE SILENCE

Stigma & Mental Health in South Asian Communities

For many South Asian families, conversations about mental health are often the ones that never happen. Anxiety, depression, or panic attacks may be whispered about as “stress headaches” or “just being tired,” but rarely addressed head-on. Behind this silence is a deeply rooted question that echoes through homes from Surrey to New York to London: log kya kahenge?—what will people say?

The Weight of Tradition

The reluctance to speak openly about mental well-being is not simply stubbornness; it’s tied to generations of history and migration. Families who endured Partition, colonial

displacement, and the challenges of building new lives in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. often developed a survival mentality: push through, keep private matters private, and project strength at all costs. Older relatives who carried those hardships forward sometimes view therapy as indulgent or unnecessary, believing resilience means “just dealing with it” and never showing weakness.

This mindset, while protective in the past, can leave younger generations feeling trapped. Many secondgeneration South Asians grow up navigating two cultural expectations: a Western society that increasingly normalizes counselling, and a home

environment where vulnerability can be mistaken for fragility or shame. The result is a quiet tug-of-war between the desire to seek help and the fear of disappointing family.

Hidden Struggles

Because of these dynamics, mental health concerns often stay invisible until they reach a crisis point. Individuals might minimize symptoms, delay treatment for years, or present with physical complaints—chronic pain, insomnia, digestive issues—that mask underlying anxiety or depression. The cost of silence is high: delayed care, strained relationships, and in some cases, the risk of self-harm.

Gender roles add another layer. Daughters may be expected to shoulder caregiving and maintain the household’s reputation; sons may feel pressure to appear stoic and self-sufficient. Queer and trans South Asians face an even sharper edge of stigma, navigating both cultural conservatism and mainstream misconceptions.

Sparks of Change

Despite these barriers, a quiet revolution is underway. Across North America and beyond, South Asian youth are creating safe spaces—both digital and physical—to challenge the old taboos. Instagram accounts and podcasts share personal stories of therapy and anxiety in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, and Tamil, proving that emotional honesty can coexist with cultural pride.

Community organizations are stepping up as well. SOCH Mental Health in Ontario offers bilingual workshops and storytelling circles. MannMukti in the U.S. hosts openmic nights and peer-support forums where people can speak in their mother tongues without judgment. In the U.K., initiatives like Taraki focus on Punjabi men’s mental health, blending faith-based dialogue with modern counselling practices. These groups show that healing does not mean abandoning tradition—it means reshaping it.

Bridging the Generational Gap

Real progress depends on bridging the distance between elders and youth. Parents and grandparents can take powerful first steps by listening without criticism and recognizing that mental health care is not a rejection of cultural values but an act of love. Young adults, for their part, are learning to invite family members into the conversation gently—sharing personal experiences, introducing bilingual resources, or even attending therapy sessions together when possible.

Faith and spirituality can be allies, not obstacles, when approached with openness. Sikh gurdwaras, Hindu temples, mosques, and churches increasingly host wellness talks or meditation sessions, showing that religious life and mental well-being can reinforce one another.

A Collective Path Forward

Breaking stigma is not about replacing tradition with Western ideals.

It’s about expanding the definition of resilience to include seeking help, expressing emotions, and supporting one another. Small actions—a parent asking a child how they really feel, a grandparent attending a mental-health seminar, a young person sharing their therapy journey online—create ripples that strengthen entire communities.

South Asian culture is rich with stories of endurance and renewal. By reframing mental health as strength rather than weakness, today’s generation can honour that legacy in a new way. Care becomes an expression of resilience, and silence is no longer a family heirloom to pass down.

A New Chapter in Lending

Keyways Mortgage Opens Flagship Office at Payal Business Centre

In the heart of Surrey’s bustling Payal Business Centre, a new chapter in the city’s mortgage landscape has begun. Keyways Mortgage, led by industry veterans Vinay Sharma and Shubha Chaudhary, has officially opened the doors to its new office—a space that is as much a reflection of their vision as it is a promise to the community they serve.

The grand opening was more than a ribbon-cutting. It was a statement. Designed with a modern aesthetic and a welcoming atmosphere, the office embodies what Sharma and Chaudhary have long stood for: clarity, trust, and a human-first approach to mortgages. Glass walls, warm finishes, and carefully considered details speak not just to design, but to transparency—the same principle that guides every conversation they have with clients.

For years, both Sharma and Chaudhary have built their reputations on guiding families, first-time homebuyers, and investors through one of life’s most important financial decisions. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: a mortgage is not just a loan, it is the foundation of a future. By combining deep industry expertise with a genuine commitment to education, they have turned what many find intimidating into an empowering process.

This new office is not just a workplace; it is a hub for community connection. “We wanted to create a space where people feel comfortable walking in, asking questions, and leaving with more confidence than they came with,” Sharma shared during the opening. Chaudhary echoed the sentiment, adding, “Our goal has always been to simplify the complex and to give people not just mortgages, but peace of mind.”

The Payal Business Centre—already known as a thriving cultural and entrepreneurial hub—provides the perfect backdrop. With its mix of vibrant businesses and constant flow of people, the location underscores Keyways Mortgage’s desire to stay accessible, visible, and deeply woven into the fabric of Surrey’s growth story.

As the housing market continues to evolve, the demand for trusted advice has never been greater. The launch of this flagship office signals more than expansion; it represents a renewed promise to help families achieve their homeownership dreams with integrity at the core.

For anyone considering a mortgage, the message is clear: step into Keyways Mortgage, and you step into a partnership built on trust, expertise, and a commitment to your future.

BREAKING THE SILENCE Autism in the South Asian Community

When a child is diagnosed with autism, the word itself often brings more questions than answers. For many South Asian families in Canada, that diagnosis can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. While awareness of autism has grown, cultural stigma, lack of resources in native languages, and hesitancy to speak openly still create unique barriers for South Asian parents.

Understanding Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. Some children may have limited speech, while others speak fluently but struggle with social cues. Many also show unique strengths in music, art, or problemsolving.

Autism is lifelong. Children with autism grow up to become autistic adults—each with different abilities, needs, and goals. Some may live independently, pursue careers, or attend university, while others require lifelong support. What all autistic people share is the right to dignity, acceptance, and Early intervention is critical. The earlier a child receives therapy and support, the greater the opportunity to build skills that help them thrive at home, school, and in the community.

Fast Facts About Autism

● Prevalence: About 1 in 30 children in BC are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

● Lifelong: Autism does not go away. Children with autism grow up to become autistic adults, each with unique strengths and challenges.

● Early Intervention Matters: The earlier therapies and supports begin, the better the long-term outcomes.

● Diversity: Autism looks different in every person. Some may need lifelong support, while others live independently, study, and work.

● Girls & Autism: Autism is more commonly diagnosed in boys, but many girls are underdiagnosed because their symptoms can look different.

● Strengths: Many autistic people excel in memory, music, math, art, or technology—skills that should be celebrated.

Autism in the South Asian Context

In South Asian culture, developmental differences are often misunderstood. Families may hear, “He’ll talk when he’s older” or “She’s just shy.” These attitudes, combined

with fear of judgment or shame, delay parents from seeking crucial help. Many feel isolated—managing not only the challenges of raising a child with autism but also the cultural weight of “what will people say.”

Government Support in British Columbia

BC offers valuable resources for children with autism:

Autism Funding: Up to $22,000 per year for children under 6, and $6,000 annually for ages 6–18, to cover therapies such as speech, ABA, and occupational therapy.

Respite & Transition: Families can access respite programs and, through Community Living BC (CLBC), supports as children grow into adulthood.

For many South Asian families, the real challenge isn’t the lack of support, but navigating these complex systems in a different language and culture.

The Role of the Autism Support Network

The Autism Support Network (ASN) is built on the power of parentto-parent support. ASN provides workshops, peer connections, and guidance for navigating autism funding, schools, and therapies. Families find both practical advice and the comfort of knowing they are not alone.

My Role as a Parent

and

As a Punjabi and Hindispeaking mother raising a child with autism, I know how overwhelming the journey can feel. That’s why I began working with ASN and started my platform Autism Awareness by Deepika. I support families in their languages, explain school and funding systems, and create safe spaces where parents can ask questions without fear of judgment.

Through awareness events, social

media, and one-on-one support, my mission is to normalize conversations about autism in our community and empower parents to advocate for their children.

Building an Inclusive Future

Seeking help is not a weakness—it is an act of love. By moving past stigma and working together, South Asian families can ensure every child is celebrated for their strengths, not defined by their challenges.

Autism is not a limitation; it is a different way of experiencing the world. When embraced, it opens doors to understanding, acceptance, and hope.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Your career takes focus. You may be stepping into a leadership role, finalizing an important project, or gaining long-overdue recognition. While this brings pride, it also demands rest and boundaries— don’t overwork yourself. Your social life picks up with new networking opportunities, but be mindful of who drains or energizes you. As the year ends, retreat inward to reflect and realign.

The next few months offer growth in your worldview. Whether through travel, education, or a major mindset shift, you’re seeing life from a new lens. Transformation is your theme. You’re moving through emotional and spiritual evolution, especially

Rust-Proofing for Winter Protecting Your Car’s Underside

The arrival of winter brings with it not only snow and ice but also a significant threat to a vehicle’s longevity: rust. Road crews combat icy conditions by spreading salt, sand, and other corrosive de-icers, which are then kicked up by tires, coating a car’s undercarriage. While a car’s exterior paint offers some protection, the underbody, frame, and suspension components are highly vulnerable to this relentless chemical assault. Rust-proofing is a proactive and essential step for any car owner looking to protect their investment from the severe damage caused by winter corrosion.

Rust is a form of iron oxide that occurs when iron or steel reacts with oxygen and water. The presence of road salt, or sodium chloride, dramatically accelerates this process. The salt acts as an electrolyte, creating a chemical reaction that makes the oxidation of metal happen much faster. As corrosive slush and grime accumulate in the nooks and crannies of the undercarriage, it creates a perfect storm for rust to form and spread, quietly eating away at the vehicle’s structural integrity.

To combat this, various rust-proofing methods have been developed. The most common is an oil-based spray, which is applied to the underbody. These products are designed to creep into seams and crevices, providing a non-drying, protective barrier that repels moisture. While effective and affordable, they require annual reapplication. A more durable alternative is a waxbased or polymer coating, which creates a thicker, more permanent seal. These coatings are less messy and last longer, but they may not penetrate as well into tight areas unless professionally applied with specialized tools.

For any rust-proofing method to be effective, proper preparation is key. The vehicle’s undercarriage must be thoroughly cleaned and dried to remove any existing dirt, salt, and grime. This ensures the rustproofing agent can bond directly with the metal surface. While DIY kits are available for oil-based sprays, a professional application often guarantees a more complete and long-lasting coat, as they have the tools and expertise to reach every hidden pocket and seam. This is

especially critical for newer vehicles with complex undercarriage designs.

Ultimately, rust-proofing is not just about preserving a car’s appearance; it is about safeguarding its mechanical and structural health. A compromised frame or suspension component due to rust can become a serious safety risk. By taking the time to rust-proof before the winter season begins, car owners can prevent costly repairs, maintain their vehicle’s value, and ensure a safer ride. It is a small investment that offers a significant return in long-term protection.
