RITA CHOHAN
REDEFINING SUCCESS THROUGH DESIGN, RESILIENCE, AND PASSION
In 2010, Rita Chohan embarked on a remarkable journey, transforming her passion for design into a thriving enterprise. As the founder of An Elegant Touch Home Staging and Design, Rita has become a trailblazer in the industry, staging over 120 homes across the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sea to Sky, and Vancouver Island. But what makes her story truly inspiring is not just her success, but the resilience, creativity, and determination that brought her here.
A Late Start, A Bold Leap
Rita’s entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 40. While some might consider this a late start, for her, it was the perfect time to channel a lifelong passion into a meaningful career. With a background in running a fashion boutique, she had always been
drawn to creativity, colors, and textures. “The fashion business and interior design both involve creativity, sales, marketing, and working with people,” she explains. Her earlier experiences laid a solid foundation for what would become a flourishing home staging business.
The timing was serendipitous. In the midst of a booming construction industry in the Lower Mainland, Rita seized the opportunity to introduce a concept that was still relatively unknown: home staging. Builders and homeowners were skeptical at first, but her dedication to educating them on the benefits of staging homes paid off. “Once clients saw successful outcomes, skeptics became believers,” she recalls. Realtors quickly recognized the value of staging as a powerful
marketing tool, and her business soared.
Roots of Resilience
Rita’s journey to entrepreneurship was deeply influenced by her upbringing in Vancouver. Her family emigrated from England when she was just three years old. In 1973, her parents opened one of the first businesses in Punjabi Market—the Ashoka Trading Company Ltd.
Growing up amidst the close-knit community of shop owners, Rita absorbed invaluable lessons about business ethics and hard work. “Working at the store was our hobby,” she fondly recalls.
Her mother’s entrepreneurial spirit was a guiding force. “Mom worked in factories in England to put Dad through school and later became a successful business owner in Canada,” Rita shares. Her mother’s
resilience and dedication left an indelible mark, shaping Rita’s own work ethic and determination.
Breaking Barriers
Entering the male-dominated construction and real estate industry could have been daunting, but Rita approached it with confidence and professionalism. “I have been blessed with respect and support from builders and realtors,” she says. Her reputation, built on integrity and exceptional work, spoke for itself.
The initial skepticism surrounding home staging didn’t deter her. Instead, Rita embraced the challenge of educating her clients. “Builders often saw their homes as their ‘nine-month babies’ and didn’t see the need for staging,” she explains. But with each successful project, the concept gained traction, proving that staging not only enhanced the appeal of homes but also helped them sell faster and at higher prices.
Balancing Family and Business
Launching a business while raising a family is no small feat, but Rita managed to balance both with grace and determination. Just six months after starting her business, she gave birth to her second son, Armaan. “I was raising three babies—my business, my older son
Akash, and my newborn,” she says with a smile.
Her husband of 29 years, Ruman, has been her biggest supporter. Together, they navigated the challenges of balancing work, family, and personal growth. “Scheduling time for each responsibility is key,” she advises, emphasizing the importance of self-care in maintaining physical and mental health.
Defining Success
For Rita, success is more than financial stability. “It’s the outcome of hard work, determination, and a commitment to family, friends, and work,” she says. Her accomplishments, from pioneering new business concepts to raising a loving family, are a testament to her unwavering drive.
interior designers and empowering stay-at-home mothers to re-enter the workforce. “I want to inspire young women to take initiative and make their mark,” she says.
Among her many milestones, being recognized with awards such as the “Excellence in Business Award” holds special significance. “These accolades fuel me to achieve even more,” she says, though she remains focused on the journey ahead and giving back to her community.
Empowering the Next Generation
Rita’s impact extends beyond her business. She is passionate about inspiring others, particularly women, to pursue their dreams. Reflecting on her own experience of starting a business later in life, she encourages women to take risks and embrace challenges. “It’s never too late to pursue your passion,” she says.
Her vision includes training aspiring
Looking Ahead
As An Elegant Touch Home Staging and Design continues to thrive, Rita remains committed to innovation and excellence. Her distinctive style and passion for design set her apart in a competitive market. “Integrity and hard work are the foundations of any successful business,” she says.
With plans to expand her mentorship efforts and inspire the next generation, Rita is not just building a business; she is building a legacy. Her journey—from a little girl helping out at her family’s shop in Punjabi Market to a successful entrepreneur—is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and passion.
In Rita Chohan, we see a woman who has not only redefined success but also continues to inspire others to dream big and work tirelessly to achieve their goals. Her story is a celebration of determination, family, and the boundless possibilities that come with pursuing one’s passion.
Born in Malaysia, raised in India, and now a prominent leader in Canada, Sobhana embodies resilience, dedication, and a commitment to social justice, education, and community development. Her life journey—spanning continents and cultures—is a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of compassion.
At just five years old, Sobhana left Malaysia for a convent boarding school in Southern India, thanks to her parents’ belief in the power of education. “Growing up in India gave me a solid foundation,” she reflects. By 16, she became President of the Rotaract Club in Palakkad, Kerala, beginning her lifelong dedication to volunteerism. These formative years ignited her passion for learning and giving back.
She pursued a BA in Philosophy at Calicut University and later earned her Master’s in Social Work
SOBHANA Jaya-Madhavan
Journey of Resilience, Compassion, and Transformative Impact Across Borders
from the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). While at TISS, her work in the slums of Mumbai profoundly shaped her worldview. Teaching English to children in impoverished areas underscored the disparities in education and fueled her desire to address systemic inequities. “It broadened my perspective on equity,” she says.
After completing her education, Sobhana returned to Malaysia, working across Southeast Asia before immigrating to Canada in 1995. The transition was challenging, as she faced job rejections despite her qualifications. “I didn’t get a single interview call for weeks,” she recalls. Undeterred, she took a minimum-wage ushering job at GM Place (now Rogers Arena) while volunteering, gaining resilience and humility.
Her breakthrough came with a role as an Employment Counsellor at Coast Foundation, followed by a
position with the BC Government as a Child Protection Worker. “That role changed the trajectory of my life in Canada,” she reflects. Over two decades, she built a reputation as a compassionate and effective leader in social work and community development.
In 2011, Sobhana was appointed the inaugural Executive Director of the Provincial Office of Domestic Violence (PODV) in British Columbia. Leading PODV, she developed initiatives like the #saysomething campaign and the Provincial Domestic Violence Plans, addressing a critical societal issue. “Through community consultations and focus groups, we created programs that positively impacted lives,” she explains.
Her leadership journey reached new heights in 2017 when she joined Simon Fraser University (SFU) as Associate Vice-President of External Relations. Collaborating with Indigenous colleagues and the Office for Aboriginal Peoples, she
worked to advance reconciliation.
“Engaging in Indigenous initiatives was humbling and deeply rewarding,” she notes, reflecting on the importance of building trust and understanding the impact of colonization.
Beyond her professional roles, Sobhana became a force in her community, serving on boards such as the United Way of British Columbia, the Burnaby Board of Trade, and the International South Asian Film Festival. Her contributions earned her recognition, including the “Woman of the Decade in Education and Leadership” and the “Inclusion Champion Award.” For Sobhana, these accolades serve as reminders of her responsibility to inspire others. “Awards like these open doors and emphasize the importance of giving back,” she says.
Today, as Chief Impact Officer at MSM Group, Sobhana continues to empower communities globally. Initiatives like TechDiva, which teaches coding to girls in slums, reflect her belief in education as a transformative tool. “When girls
from vulnerable backgrounds gain access to education and skills, they can break cycles of poverty and inequality,” she explains.
Sobhana’s leadership philosophy centers on kindness and collaboration. “Kindness is my north star,” she says. She believes in creating environments where people thrive and emphasizes the importance of mentorship, which she describes as a two-way learning experience. “I’ve had mentors who generously shared their wisdom, and I strive to pay it forward,” she shares.
Looking ahead, Sobhana envisions education as a powerful tool for addressing systemic inequities. “Education isn’t just about degrees or jobs; it’s about opening minds and helping individuals become the best versions of themselves,” she explains. Thoughtfully approached, education can equip individuals to tackle systemic issues like poverty and inequity in meaningful ways.
As she prepares for the next chapter in her journey,
which includes returning to India to continue her impactful work, her message is one of unity and purpose. “Humanity is one big family. By giving back, building stronger bonds, and working together, we can leave the world better than we found it.”
Reflecting on her journey, Sobhana highlights pivotal moments that shaped her life: attending school in India at five, leading a Rotaract Club at 16, immigrating to Canada in her 20s, and becoming a mother to Prabhanj and Niranj. Balancing professional responsibilities with family and community service, she views her roles as interconnected. “I approach life with optimism and strive to make a difference,” she says.
Her advice to young professionals is profound yet simple: “Believe in yourself and the power of one to make a difference. Focus on your superpower and use it to change the world for the better. And remember, health is wealth.”
Sobhana’s story is not just one of personal success but a blueprint for creating meaningful change. Her journey demonstrates that with resilience, purpose, and compassion, the possibilities for impact are limitless.

SHELINA MAWANI
Journey of Building Nana’s Kitchen with Resilience and Purpose
Shelina Mawani’s story is one of grit, resilience, and a deeply rooted commitment to community empowerment. As the founder of Nana’s Kitchen, Shelina, alongside her sister Nasim, ventured into the restaurant business with little knowledge but big dreams. Although their initial attempt at entrepreneurship failed, it laid the foundation for what would become a thriving business and an enduring legacy.
From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Enterprise
Shelina’s entrepreneurial journey began with heartbreak. “My sister and I blindly ventured into the restaurant business, and it was heartbreaking as it totally failed,” she recalls. Her husband Nawaz played a pivotal role in supporting the family during this challenging time, working 14-hour days as a taxi driver. While their initial goal was simply to provide for their family, they could never have imagined the scale of success Nana’s Kitchen would achieve.
“Nawaz excelled in sales, bringing in the customers we have today, and I handled everything else. My job
was just ensuring we survived till tomorrow,” Shelina explains. Together, they formed a dynamic team, proving that collaboration and a strong support system are essential for achieving remarkable success.
Honoring Heritage Through Nana’s Kitchen
Nana’s Kitchen is deeply influenced by Shelina’s cultural heritage. “Our culture emphasizes empowerment and the importance of supporting one another,” she says. The name “Nana” holds a special place in Shelina’s heart, honoring her resilient grandmother. “She did whatever it took to survive and never gave up. I strive to embody her spirit. Today, we are here because of her.”
Overcoming Challenges in a MaleDominated Industry
As a woman entrepreneur in the male-dominated food production industry, Shelina has faced
numerous challenges, including cash flow issues, production hurdles, and staffing problems. “Challenges are challenges, regardless of whether they are male-dominated or not,” she states. Shelina’s approach has always been thoughtful and strategic. “With each decision, I aimed to make the best choice possible, praying and hoping for the best outcome.”
Her ability to navigate societal and cultural expectations has been equally pivotal. “Societal and cultural expectations are often mere obstacles that can stand in the way of your success,” she explains. By staying focused on her goals and embracing her uniqueness with confidence, Shelina has overcome external pressures and built a business that reflects her values.
Sacrifices and Rewards
The journey to building Nana’s Kitchen has not been without personal sacrifices. “I gave up the most valuable thing there is: time. I missed my children growing up, milestones, and so many moments that words cannot describe,” she shares. However, Shelina finds solace in seeing the life her two sons now lead, filled with adventure and fulfillment. Her eldest son is set to become the CEO of Nana’s Kitchen, a testament to the strong foundation she has built.
Empowering Women and Marginalized Communities
Shelina’s commitment to empowering women, particularly new immigrants, is at the heart of Nana’s Kitchen. “During our growth, it was evident that women faced considerable challenges in the job market, particularly those from India,” she says. One such woman, who initially offered to work for free to prove her abilities, is now the head of the full production team, managing over 50 women. “This journey has reinforced my belief in the extraordinary power and strength that women hold.”
Today, women make up 80% of Nana’s Kitchen’s workforce, and they hold 90% of major management roles. “We are committed to empowering marginalized individuals. I told my son that even when he takes over, these core values will always remain at the heart of our organization.”
Innovation Meets Tradition
Innovation is a cornerstone of Nana’s Kitchen. The company boasts HACCP and BRC certifications, making it a leader in food safety and quality in British Columbia. Shelina has also established an Innovation Committee to develop exciting new products, ensuring the
company remains at the forefront of the industry while staying true to its roots.
“Innovation is crucial to our success, but it’s equally important to honor the values that brought us here,” she notes. This balance between progress and tradition has been a key driver of Nana’s Kitchen’s growth.
Giving Back to the Community
Shelina’s passion for philanthropy is rooted in gratitude. “Everything I have and everything I am is a direct result of the Universe’s blessings,” she says. Shelina believes in the principle of giving generously without expecting anything in return. “When you give with conviction, you will find that more returns to you. This is a principle I live by and hope to pass on to others.”
A Legacy of Kindness and Empowerment
As a woman leader in business and philanthropy, Shelina hopes to leave a legacy grounded in kindness, love, and empowerment. “I aspire to inspire others to believe that anything is possible,” she says. Shelina’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, collaboration, and unwavering faith.
Her advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Embrace the opportunities ahead and believe in something greater. Learn to fly— first love yourself—and ignite the spark within you. Take the leap of courage. You are powerful, worthy, and capable.”
The Road Ahead
As Nana’s Kitchen continues to grow under the leadership of Shelina and her family, the company remains committed to its mission of empowerment, innovation, and giving back. With a workforce that celebrates diversity and a strong foundation built on values, Nana’s Kitchen is not just a business—it’s a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
Shelina Mawani’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved through resilience, collaboration, and a deep sense of purpose. Her story reminds us that even the greatest challenges can be overcome with determination and faith, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive
The Visionary Journey of Pavan Aujla
Transforming Education Through Learnova Tech and Tera Terra Society
In a world reshaped by technology, Pavan Aujla is leading a transformative revolution in education. As the founder of Learnova Tech and Tera Terra Society, Pavan combines her expertise in finance with a deepseated passion for empowering young minds. Her journey, from mortgage consultant to ed-tech visionary, is one of resilience, foresight, and a commitment to meaningful impact.
Pavan’s career in finance revealed troubling patterns. As a mortgage consultant, she witnessed the consequences of poor financial literacy. “Financial literacy is a cornerstone of lifelong success, yet most children are not taught how to manage money effectively,” she explains. The economic instability she saw during downturns fueled her mission to equip the next generation with the tools to navigate financial challenges. Recognizing automation’s impact on the mortgage industry, she foresaw its transformation and decided to pivot. While her mortgage company, Autarky Capital Corp, remains her bread and butter, its profits now fuel Learnova Tech’s mission to reshape education.
Learnova Tech was born from Pavan’s belief in democratizing education through technology. The platform focuses on financial
literacy, AI mastery, and cognitive training—an ecosystem designed to nurture ethical, responsible leaders. “Learnova is more than an ed-tech platform; it’s an ecosystem,” she says. “We support learners from cradle to college, ensuring they have access to the tools and knowledge to thrive.”
A key differentiator is Learnova’s inclusivity. With courses available in 30 languages, the platform ensures no learner is left behind. By partnering with over 100 AIdriven companies worldwide, Learnova connects students to internships, accelerators, and realworld opportunities. This global collaboration underscores Pavan’s belief in education as a tool for equity. “Linguistic diversity breaks barriers and fosters unity,” she adds. “Education and AI should unite communities, not divide them.”
At the heart of Learnova’s offerings is its revolutionary MindFlex program. Designed to enhance cognitive abilities and ethical decisionmaking, MindFlex combines cutting-edge techniques to optimize brain function. “MindFlex is essentially re-coding the brain,” Pavan explains. “It helps students unlearn and relearn strategies, creating a solid foundation for lifelong growth.”
Starting at a young age, the program uses an AI avatar to guide
learners through hand mudras, gestures, and movements that trick the brain into new patterns of learning. It incorporates mental puzzles, super memory techniques, and mental mathematics taught through secret coding tactics based on the laws of imagination and association. These innovative approaches not only improve cognitive performance but also
foster creativity and problemsolving skills. MindFlex has shown remarkable results, from helping children overcome learning challenges to reversing memory loss in seniors.
Pavan’s upbringing instilled a purpose-driven mindset that now shapes Learnova’s mission. “I’ve always prioritized meaningful change over profits,” she reflects. Learnova’s curriculum incorporates ethics at every level, ensuring students not only master technical skills but also develop the empathy and foresight needed to navigate ethical dilemmas. This holistic approach aligns seamlessly with Tera Terra Society’s mission to expand access to education in underserved regions, ensuring no community is left behind.
By integrating cognitive training, AI mastery, and financial literacy, Learnova equips learners to address real-world challenges thoughtfully and responsibly. “AI and technology have immense potential to personalize education, but they also pose risks like shorter attention spans and reduced social interaction,” Pavan notes. Learnova counters these issues by fostering interpersonal skills and integrating cognitive tools to build resilience.
Launching Learnova has been both a labor of love and a test of perseverance. Balancing her role as a mortgage consultant with the demands of an innovative ed-tech startup has required immense focus and teamwork. “Leadership isn’t about doing everything alone; it’s about empowering those around you,” Pavan says. She credits her dedicated teams at both Autarky Capital and Learnova for helping bring her vision to life.
Since incorporating Learnova in May 2024, Pavan has laid a strong foundation, with the first cohort set to launch in February 2025. Programs like MindFlex have not only garnered positive feedback but also reinforced her confidence in Learnova’s transformative potential. Yet the journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Moments of self-doubt and external pressures to prioritize revenue over impact have tested her resolve. But Pavan remains steadfast in her mission. “Motion toward a mission creates momentum,” she says.
As a woman entrepreneur, particularly in male-dominated industries, Pavan’s path hasn’t been easy. “As a woman, especially from an underrepresented community, you have to work harder to prove yourself,” she shares. Her advice to others is simple: “Don’t give up, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Take the time to nurture your vision, and once you commit, move forward with unwavering focus.”
For Pavan, the ultimate goal is to empower students to become ethical innovators and leaders. Growing up, she lacked clear guidance on navigating the business world. Learnova fills that gap for others by teaching financial literacy, ethical AI mastery, and cognitive skills. “Education
isn’t just about degrees or jobs; it’s about opening minds and helping individuals become the best versions of themselves,” she says.
Looking ahead, Pavan envisions Learnova as a global ecosystem for lifelong learning. With its commitment to inclusivity, ethics, and innovation, the platform is poised to redefine education for generations to come. Tera Terra Society complements this vision by ensuring even the most underserved communities can access quality education.
Reflecting on her journey, Pavan highlights the importance of staying true to one’s mission. “The possibilities are endless when we invest in ethical, inclusive education,” she concludes. Her story is one of resilience, innovation, and purpose—a blueprint for driving meaningful change in education and beyond.
“Learnova supports learners from cradle to college, ensuring they have access to the tools and knowledge to thrive.”

Breaking Barriers in Real Estate
MONICA UPPAL’S VISION FOR A MORE INCLUSIVE INDUSTRY
At just 26, Monica Uppal is redefining what it means to lead in real estate development. A visionary entrepreneur, real estate developer, and community advocate, she is proving that success in this industry isn’t just about bricks and mortar—it’s about people, purpose, and impact.
As the Director of Sales and Marketing for Saddlecrest Living, Monica is spearheading an initiative that makes homeownership more accessible. The 43-townhome development is designed with first-time buyers, newcomers, and multigenerational families in mind, offering financial flexibility and a sense of belonging. For Monica, this isn’t just a
project—it’s a movement toward a more inclusive housing landscape.
Beyond Saddlecrest Living, Monica is shaping the future of real estate through policy advocacy as the youngest public member of Calgary’s Housing Committee. She is actively working to address pressing housing issues, particularly for marginalized communities, Indigenous peoples, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Her journey in real estate began long before her professional career. Raised in an environment where site visits and negotiations were everyday occurrences, Monica absorbed the intricacies of the
industry from an early age. “Real estate has never been just a career path for me—it’s been a constant thread in my life,” she reflects. Her father, a real estate professional, never pushed her into the field, but it felt like a natural progression. Over time, she realized that real estate isn’t just about constructing buildings—it’s about shaping stories, fostering communities, and creating opportunities.
Armed with an MBA from Ivey Business School, Canada’s topranked program, Monica combines business acumen with a bold vision. Her previous roles—securing an 18-million-square-foot portfolio as a Business Development Lead for a PropTech startup and contributing to
a $1.2 billion real estate portfolio as a Portfolio Management Associate at Aspen Properties—have equipped her with the expertise to challenge industry norms.
Recognizing a gap in real estate marketing, Monica founded AXIA, a creative agency designed to make high-quality branding and storytelling accessible to all developers—not just those with deep pockets. “Real estate marketing has been formulaic for too long,” she says. “We don’t just market spaces; we position them as experiences that people can see themselves in.” Through AXIA, Monica is redefining how developments connect with buyers, using cultural relevance, storytelling, and trend analysis to create brands that resonate beyond traditional marketing.
Her entrepreneurial influence extends beyond AXIA. She founded X/CHANGE, a consulting firm that explores the intersection of real estate, culture, and social responsibility. Additionally, she is launching an NGO dedicated to addressing Canada’s labor shortages by encouraging underrepresented communities to pursue careers in the trades. Her advocacy work also includes Fields for Our Future, a campaign focused on ensuring every child in Calgary has access to quality soccer facilities and the opportunity to play.
As a young woman in a male-dominated industry, Monica has faced her share of challenges. “One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced was being underestimated because of my age,” she admits. Rather than allowing it to discourage her, she saw it as an opportunity to prove her worth. By consistently adding value and
bringing fresh perspectives to the table, she earned trust and solidified her place as a leader.
Her approach to leadership is deeply rooted in inclusivity. “Real estate is at its best when it reflects the people it serves,” she asserts. “That only happens when new voices and fresh perspectives are part of the conversation.” Through mentorship and policy work, she is opening doors for the next generation, particularly for women and minorities.
Balancing multiple roles while maintaining personal wellbeing is no small feat, but Monica has mastered the art of intentional energy management. She prioritizes time for herself, whether it’s a weekend escape to Canmore, quality moments with friends, or simply unplugging from work. “Having a core circle that
understands the demands of my work makes all the difference,” she says.
When asked about her inspirations, Monica credits the resilience of immigrants who came to Canada with little but built new lives through sheer determination. “They left behind everything familiar for a better future. Their sacrifices drive me to push boundaries—not just for my own growth, but to keep opening doors for others.”
Looking ahead, Monica envisions AXIA becoming the creative powerhouse that shapes how real estate is marketed and experienced across North America. Her goal is to build developments that don’t just blend in but raise the bar for inclusive, community-driven spaces. “The future of real estate should reflect the diversity of the people who live in it,” she emphasizes. “My goal isn’t just to open doors—it’s to ensure they stay open for those coming next.”
Monica Uppal is a force of change, proving that the future of real estate isn’t just about what we build—it’s about who we build it for.
Vanessa’s upbringing at the intersection of Fijian and Nepali heritage in British Columbia shaped her awareness of cultural identity and systemic inequality. Her passion for social justice was solidified at 20 when she lost her mother to mental health struggles. This profound loss exposed critical gaps in mental health support, particularly for women of color facing trauma and systemic barriers.
Her grief became a force for change. Through her mother’s experience, Vanessa gained
health challenges faced by marginalized communities and the impact of systemic racism and gender discrimination. Having experienced racism firsthand— such as being told she was hired only because “the manager was brown”—she realized these moments were not meant to break her but to clarify her purpose: to help build a world where no one must justify their worth or fight for their right to belong.
Vanessa’s dedication led her to the Canadian Labour Congress, where she serves as Vice President of the Workers of Colour Working Group. She works to ensure that racialized workers have equal leadership opportunities within the labor movement. Too often, workers of color lead labor struggles yet remain underrepresented in decisionmaking spaces. To address this, she has created pathways
leadership roles, emphasizing the need for diverse voices in decisionmaking.
One of her proudest moments was when a South Asian woman shared that seeing someone like her in leadership inspired her to vote. This reinforced Vanessa’s commitment to representation, ensuring that marginalized voices are not only heard but valued.
In her mental health advocacy, Vanessa strives to normalize struggles, particularly in communities where silence often surrounds these issues. Through platforms like her podcast and Instagram page, V Talks, she shares her journey with trauma, resilience, and mental health challenges. By openly discussing these experiences, she creates a space where others feel seen and heard. A particularly moving message came from someone who resonated with
her story on MoveUp, reinforcing her belief that mental health struggles are universal and deeply connected. This communitybuilding aspect is central to her work.
Vanessa also uses storytelling in her anti-racism activism. By sharing personal encounters with racism—from microaggressions to overt discrimination—she fosters empathy and understanding. Her stories highlight not only personal pain but also systemic structures that uphold inequality. She facilitates workshops addressing the roots of racism within organizations, ensuring that anti-racism efforts extend beyond conversation into sustained, actionable commitments. In parallel, she advocates for policy changes aimed at dismantling discriminatory systems.
Her workshops combine storytelling with tangible solutions, teaching people to connect personal experiences with broader systemic issues while offering real-world strategies for fostering inclusive environments. This approach bridges emotional connection and systemic change to build a more just society.
Vanessa’s commitment to systemic change is also reflected in her political journey. Running as the NDP candidate for Cloverdale–Langley City aligns with her values and desire to serve her community. Justice and equity—principles at the heart of the NDP’s platform— drive her campaign. Issues like affordable housing, accessible healthcare, climate justice, and workers’ rights resonate deeply with her.
As a young woman of color in politics, Vanessa has faced microaggressions and online
hostility rooted in racism and sexism. However, she has found that authenticity is key. When engaging with voters, she listens intently, shares her own experiences, and connects with their hopes and concerns. Building trust through empathy helps break down barriers over time.
Affordable housing is one of Vanessa’s top priorities for Cloverdale–Langley City. She believes the current system treats housing as a commodity, making it unattainable for many families. To address this, she advocates for increased federal investment in co-op and non-market housing, alongside stronger tenant protections to prevent displacement due to rising rents. Her goal is to ensure every resident has access to safe, affordable housing without having to choose between food and rent.
Healthcare access, particularly mental health services, is another pressing issue for Vanessa. Having experienced the gaps in mental health care firsthand, she is committed to advocating for expanded, affordable services. She supports integrating mental health care into primary healthcare and ensuring that all Canadians, regardless of income, have access to necessary medications.
Climate justice is also central to Vanessa’s platform. At the local level, she aims to push for green infrastructure initiatives— such as public transportation improvements, bike lanes, and electric vehicle charging stations— to reduce the community’s carbon footprint while supporting local economies. Nationally, she advocates for policies that hold polluters accountable while ensuring a just transition for workers affected by the shift to
renewable energy.
Through her political and advocacy work, Vanessa strives to make a lasting impact that reflects her values of empowerment, equity, and healing. Inspired by her mother’s unwavering spirit, she hopes to leave a legacy where marginalized voices are not only heard but empowered. She envisions a world where systemic barriers are dismantled, mental health struggles are acknowledged and supported, and every individual—especially young people—feels empowered to shape their own future. Her ultimate goal is to build a legacy rooted in compassion, inclusivity, and meaningful change.
For Vanessa, resilience is about hope. It is about believing that change is not only necessary but achievable. She is driven by the knowledge that the work she does today will shape the world for future generations. Every person who shares their story and every individual who raises their voice contributes to the movement for justice and fairness. It is this belief that keeps her motivated and fuels her pursuit of a better, more equitable future for all.
For many Métis people, identity is a complex and deeply personal journey. For Collete Trudeu, the CEO of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC), discovering her Métis heritage was both unexpected and transformative. “I never knew I was Métis,” she shares. “My family went underground due to the residential school system and racism.” But working with MNBC changed everything. It reintroduced her to her culture, uncovering stories of her ancestors that had long been hidden. Today, she takes pride in her identity, her Nation, and the strong, resilient people within it. Most importantly, her daughter grows up knowing exactly who she is— proudly Métis and supported by a community filled with love, guidance, and belonging.
As a leader, she embraces a relationships-first approach, emphasizing trust, accountability, and cultural grounding. “Every day, I strive to live my values of accountability, adaptability, enthusiasm, and positivity,” she explains. Leadership, to her, is about humility and service—ensuring that

the work at MNBC is meaningful and that Métis voices are championed at every level. She models patient, kind, and equitable leadership, recognizing that true progress happens when people move forward together with a shared vision.
Her leadership has been shaped by incredible mentors, but one woman, in particular, stands out—her former school principal. “She was calm, steady, and led with grace,” she recalls. “Even in the toughest situations, she never wavered.” That poise became a guiding principle in her own leadership. Today, she strives to offer the same kind of mentorship for women aspiring to lead. She encourages curiosity, confidence, and the courage to seize opportunities. “We need to create pathways that recognize and nurture women’s leadership potential,” she says.
Looking ahead, she remains open to wherever this journey takes her, always ready to say yes to new opportunities. But one goal is clear: amplifying the voices of Métis women in leadership. The history of
MNBC itself is rooted in the strength of its matriarchs—women who gathered around a kitchen table and envisioned a self-governing Métis Nation in British Columbia. “They were change-makers despite every challenge our people faced,” she reflects. “It is their strength and vision that inspire me.”
Her mission now is to honour, empower, and uplift Métis women, ensuring their leadership shapes the future of the Nation. As she was encouraged to step forward, she hopes to do the same for the next generation of Métis women, paving the way for a future built on strength, resilience, and shared leadership.

Daisy Shah’s journey in the entertainment industry is a testament to perseverance and self-belief. Without any prior connections in Bollywood, she started as a choreographer, initially just to earn pocket money. However, her dedication and love for storytelling through dance led her to explore acting and modeling, eventually carving her own path in the industry.
Her transition from choreography to acting wasn’t easy. She faced doubts, including her own, but overcame them through hard work and an unshakable belief in herself. She emphasizes that choreography isn’t just about dance steps but about narrating a story through movement. While pursuing modeling, she also received offers from the South Indian film industry, which became a stepping stone to Bollywood.
For Daisy, challenges are an inevitable part of life. She believes that struggles shape character and that both men and women must learn to rise above obstacles. As a woman in the film industry, she has

been fortunate to work with likeminded people who have supported and encouraged her growth. She credits the people in her life—both men and women—for playing a role in her success.
Beyond her career, Daisy values family above all. Coming from humble beginnings, she takes pride in having built a comfortable life for her loved ones. She grew up in a middle-class household where finances were tight, but today, she ensures her family has everything they need. Her greatest achievement is seeing her mother live without hesitation, free to make choices without financial worries.
Daisy strongly believes in women’s empowerment but insists that true empowerment lies in having a voice. She encourages women to define their own realities, develop resilience, and trust their instincts. She also highlights the importance of recognizing men’s struggles, advocating for fairness and mutual respect rather than an exclusive focus on one gender.
Her message to young dreamers is simple: never let others define your reality, develop a thick skin in a world full of judgment, and most importantly, learn to say no. Success, according to her, is about making independent choices and standing by them.
As she continues her journey, Daisy remains committed to being authentic, empowering others, and creating meaningful work that inspires.

Growing up in the Balmiki community, Prof. Panwar Kaushal witnessed the intersections of caste and gender discrimination. Women around her were confined to menial jobs, denied education, and excluded from decision-making. Yet, she saw their quiet defiance. Her mother, despite limited literacy, instilled in her the power of voice.
Studying Sanskrit was both rebellion and reclamation. Historically denied to Dalits, Sanskrit holds the texts that shaped caste hierarchies. By engaging with it critically, she challenges the notion that it belongs only to the privileged. Her work dismantles oppressive narratives while creating space for Dalit voices in academia and public discourse.
As an educator, she centers social justice and gender equality in her teaching. Her syllabus includes Phule, Ambedkar, and Dalit women writers, perspectives often overlooked in mainstream academia. More importantly, she fosters a classroom where marginalized students feel seen, heard, and empowered.
PANELIST Prof.KaushalPanwar
A pivotal moment came during her undergraduate years when a professor dismissed her ability to engage with Sanskrit texts due to her background. That humiliation fueled her resolve to reclaim spaces historically closed to people like her. From then on, her scholarship became resistance.
Prof. Kaushal sees education as a tool of dignity and defiance. For Dalit women, literacy is not just about reading and writing—it is about questioning oppression and envisioning a future beyond imposed limitations. However, she stresses that education must be accessible, inclusive, and intersectional to truly drive change.
Navigating academia as a Dalit woman has meant facing invisibility, tokenization, and scrutiny. In spaces dominated by upper-caste narratives, Dalit histories are often erased or reduced to footnotes. But she refuses to shrink herself. She writes, speaks, and mentors young Dalit women, ensuring they claim their rightful place.
For her, activism and academia are inseparable. Her research informs her activism, and her activism shapes her scholarship. Whether writing about Dalit women’s narratives or teaching, she challenges power structures and amplifies marginalized voices.
As a panelist at Ignite 2025, she sees this as both an honor and a responsibility. Her message: empowerment is not just individual success but collective liberation.
Her advice: “Your voice is your power - never let anyone silence it. Build networks, read Dalit feminist writings, and remember—your presence in spaces not designed for you is a revolution. Keep pushing, keep questioning, keep reclaiming.”
“Your voice is your power—never let anyone silence it.

where career and caregiving responsibilities are shared equitably.

ndra Bhan’s journey from a humble upbringing as the youngest of five children in Fiji to becoming a trailblazing leader and businesswoman in Canada is a story of resilience, dedication, and inspiration. Growing up in a closeknit family, she learned the values of sacrifice and leadership early on. Her eldest brother, who gave up his own education to ensure his younger siblings could thrive, became her greatest inspiration. “His selflessness and dedication shaped my understanding of leadership,” Indra recalls. “He led by example, putting the needs of others first, and instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and care for the community.” These lessons laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to serving others.
At just 19 years old, Indra began her professional journey in a retailer’s corporate office. It was a time of both excitement and challenge, especially as a young woman navigating the business world. “One of the biggest challenges was being taken seriously,” she shares. “I often felt like I had to prove myself more than my colleagues.” Through perseverance, hard work, and a focus on delivering results, Indra built her credibility and established herself as a force to be reckoned with. Her commitment to continuous learning and improvement became her greatest assets in overcoming obstacles and advancing her career.
INDRA BHAN
A Trailblazing Leader
When Indra immigrated to Canada 23 years ago, she faced the daunting task of building a new life in an unfamiliar country. She made a conscious effort to connect with her community, attending events and forging relationships that would prove invaluable. “I met several successful business owners who mentored me and helped me navigate the challenges of being an immigrant and a woman,” she explains. These mentors offered guidance, constructive feedback, and support that made a lasting impact on her career. Today, Indra pays it forward by mentoring young women, sharing her insights at networking events, and creating spaces where women can support and inspire one another.
As the Interim CEO and COO of the Surrey Board of Trade, Indra’s days are filled with strategic decision-making and operational management. Balancing these demanding roles requires prioritization, delegation, and effective communication. “I’ve learned to trust my team and empower them to take ownership,” she says. To maintain work-life harmony, Indra sets boundaries, prioritizes her physical and mental well-being, and treasures time with her grandchildren. “They remind
me of the simple joys in life and help me stay grounded,” she adds.
Indra’s expertise in community engagement is widely recognized. She is passionate about ensuring that women’s voices are included and amplified in community development initiatives. “It’s not enough to just invite women to the table; we need to actively listen to them and take their input seriously,” she emphasizes. By championing women’s economic independence and advocating for their inclusion at every level, Indra is driving meaningful change.
For young women aspiring to leadership roles, Indra’s advice is clear: “Don’t wait for permission. Leadership is earned through action. Believe in yourself, celebrate your achievements, and lift others as you rise.” Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the unwavering belief that leadership is about service and lifting others.

Her career, which spans roles in government and community service, is rooted in hands-on experience, a deep

understanding of people’s struggles, and a commitment to solving problems.
A Path to Leadership
Amna’s path into politics was shaped by her personal experiences and her drive to help others. With extensive experience in government, including roles as Director of Stakeholder Relations and Advisor to the Minister of Housing, Amna gained invaluable insight into the challenges people face in her community. “It became clear to me that with my experience and knowledge of government systems, I was ready to step into a leadership position,” she shares. Her drive to make
a difference also comes from her parents, whose sacrifices shaped her perspective and encouraged her to seize opportunities.
Overcoming Challenges as a Woman in Politics
Amna’s journey in politics has not been without its challenges, especially as a woman in a maledominated field. She faced barriers in finding her place at the decisionmaking table, but her determination to work hard and earn her seat has only strengthened her resolve.
“Finding my seat and owning the reality that I’ve worked hard to get here gives me solace and motivates me to work even harder,” she explains.
She acknowledges the progress made by women in politics, noting that the newly elected B.C. Government Caucus includes many talented women who continue to break barriers. Amna also recognizes the role of male allies in supporting women’s leadership, contributing
to the continued advancement of gender equality.
Policies to Empower Women
As MLA and Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health and Addictions, Amna is focused on policies that empower women and address mental health and addiction issues. She believes mental health is integral to overall health, and everyone should have access to necessary services. “There are women battling addictions who may not know where to start to get the help they need,” she says. To address this, the B.C. government has introduced phone lines for treatment referrals and expanded treatment beds across the province, making it easier for individuals to access care at every stage of recovery.
Amna is also committed to breaking down systemic barriers that hinder women’s success, ensuring that they have the
resources to thrive in all aspects of life, including housing, education, and employment.
Balancing Leadership and Personal Life
Balancing the demands of a political career with personal life is a challenge Amna faces daily. The 24/7 responsibility of being an MLA requires significant sacrifices, including time away from family and friends.
“Missing time with family comes with the relentless schedule,” she admits. However, her immigrant background and earlier public service experiences have taught
her the importance of having a purpose that goes beyond individual benefit.
Despite her busy schedule, Amna stresses the importance of maintaining a balance. “Good time management skills and a strong support system of loved ones make things easier,” she says. Her advice to women aspiring to leadership roles is to prioritize well-being, build strong networks, and remember that leadership is about lifting others as you rise.
Legacy of Empowerment
Amna Shah’s leadership is built on a foundation of empathy, resilience, and a desire to create positive change. Whether addressing mental health and addiction, advocating for women’s rights, or navigating the challenges of a male-dominated political environment, Amna remains unwavering in her commitment to service.
Her journey is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when one leads with passion, purpose, and a focus on uplifting others. Through her work, Amna is breaking down barriers, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring that women and marginalized communities have the support and resources they need to thrive. Her impact will be felt for generations to come, serving as an inspiration for future women leaders who strive to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

Neesha Hothi
A Trailblazer in PR, Marketing, and Community Advocacy
Neesha Hothi is a visionary leader in public relations and marketing, known for her strategic expertise and unwavering commitment to amplifying diverse voices. As the founder of Neesh Communications, she built her agency on her own terms—choosing projects that mattered while maintaining the flexibility to prioritize life’s key moments.
Her journey began after leaving her role as PR and Event Manager at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Superstore, where she gained invaluable experience managing high-profile events, celebrity visits, and international media relations. The Olympics were a defining chapter—she worked relentlessly, celebrated just as hard, and found herself in surreal moments, like helping land the red mittens on The Oprah Winfrey Show and witnessing Canada’s first gold medal on home soil.
After freelancing for several PR agencies, a mentor’s advice changed everything: “You can’t freelance forever—you either get a job or build something of your own.” That pivotal moment led her to launch Neesh Communications, an agency that not only delivers mainstream marketing and PR campaigns but also champions South Asian and underrepresented communities. Where traditional agencies overlooked them, Neesha stepped in—offering strategic support at
not-for-profit rates or even pro bono, ensuring they received the same level of professionalism as corporate clients.
Her experience leading marketing efforts for major events like the Vancouver JUNO Host Committees (2018, 2025) and the Maple Ridge BC Summer Games solidified her approach: substance over show. High-pressure environments taught her that success isn’t about elaborate strategy decks—it’s about smart problem-solving, clear planning, and knowing when to pivot.
At the heart of her work is authenticity, cultural awareness, and community engagement. She believes in genuine connections— listening, investing in relationships, and ensuring that outreach efforts are reciprocal, not performative. This philosophy has made her agency a leader in ethnic marketing and demographic outreach, bridging gaps between brands and the communities they seek to serve.
Beyond her business, Neesha is passionate about women’s empowerment and redefining success on her own terms. For her, balance isn’t about perfection—it’s about intentional prioritization. She’s mastered the art of working smarter, not harder, setting boundaries, and asking for help when needed. She believes in giving herself grace, knowing that missed deadlines or late arrivals don’t define success.
Through her work, Neesha continues to create space for women, entrepreneurs, and diverse communities—challenging norms, amplifying voices, and proving that true leadership is about lifting others along the way.

Breaking Barriers, Building Legacies
The Journey of
NAIYA GILL
For Naiya Gill, the legal profession is more than a career—it is a calling, a mission, and a force for empowerment. With over 21 years of experience, she has carved a path of resilience, leadership, and advocacy, not only for herself but for countless women striving to establish themselves in a traditionally male-dominated industry. As the founder of her own law firm, Naiya stands as a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of female leadership in the legal field.
Naiya’s journey into law was shaped by her father’s unwavering encouragement. Recognizing her strong reasoning, articulation, and sense of justice, he saw potential in her that she had yet to recognize in herself. While her artistic soul gravitated toward music and painting, his belief in her legal aptitude guided her toward a profession where she would soon find her true purpose. Over time, law became more than statutes and arguments—it became a tool to empower, educate, and advocate for those in need. Today, Naiya views her profession as a platform to create meaningful change, ensuring justice is not just an abstract ideal but an accessible reality.
The road to success was far from easy. After completing her National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams, Naiya faced one of the most challenging periods of her life. In 2020, amid the devastating loss of her husband, she navigated the competitive search for an articling position. It was a time of immense personal and professional struggle, but giving up was never an option. Instead, she channeled her grief into determination, using each rejection and setback to fuel her resolve. Her perseverance led to the establishment of her own law firm—a beacon of resilience, excellence, and empowerment.
As a woman in leadership, Naiya understands the unique challenges women in law face, from systemic biases to balancing career and personal commitments. Her firm is not just a workplace; it is a sanctuary for growth, mentorship, and advocacy. She has implemented structured mentorship and sponsorship programs for young female lawyers and articling students, ensuring they have the support networks needed for success. Beyond mentorship, she has introduced flexible work arrangements and leadership pathways that allow women to grow their careers without sacrificing personal well-being or family life. Naiya believes that a legal career should not come at the cost of one’s health, relationships, or aspirations.
The legal profession has long been shaped by male dominance, but as more women rise to leadership, the industry is transforming. Female leadership is not just about increasing numbers; it’s about redefining firm culture, client relationships, and legal practice itself. Women leaders bring empathy, strategic thinking, and a collaborative approach that enhances the profession’s effectiveness and inclusivity. Naiya has witnessed firsthand how female leadership positively impacts firm culture. By prioritizing mentorship, inclusivity, and work-life balance, women-led firms foster stronger relationships, increased client trust, and a more just legal system. Her firm’s culture reflects these values, ensuring that talent—not gender— determines success. Looking ahead, Naiya’s mission is
clear: to continue breaking barriers for women in law and to ensure the next generation faces fewer obstacles and greater opportunities. She actively engages with women’s legal networks, advocacy groups, and mentorship programs to push for gender equality, advocating for policies that address pay equity, flexible work arrangements, and the elimination of gender-based barriers. Beyond her firm, she is committed to empowering women in the broader community. She believes legal knowledge should not be a privilege and uses her platform to provide resources and education to women navigating family law, workplace discrimination, and systemic injustices. Through workshops, advocacy, and pro bono initiatives, she ensures women have the tools to advocate for themselves and demand their rightful place in society.
Naiya Gill’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice. Her journey from a young woman encouraged by her father to a trailblazing leader in law is an inspiration to aspiring female lawyers. She is not just creating opportunities for herself
but laying the groundwork for generations of women to rise without the barriers that once stood before them. Her vision extends beyond individual empowerment—it is about systemic transformation. She is not content with merely breaking the glass ceiling; she is working to rebuild the legal profession into a space where women are not just present but powerful, influential, and instrumental in shaping the future of justice.
Through her leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, Naiya Gill is proving that when women empower women, they don’t just change the profession—they transform the very fabric of justice itself.

Through Stranger Story, I’ve made it my mission to amplify women’s voices by giving them a platform to share their experiences. I believe storytelling is a powerful tool— when one woman shares her story, it not only empowers her but also inspires countless others. These narratives break barriers, shift perspectives, and remind us that we are more connected than we think.
At PICS, I apply this passion for storytelling to real-life advocacy. As Canada’s largest non-profit serving South Asians, PICS provides a safe space for women to speak up, knowing their voices matter. We use storytelling to empower

Amplifying Women’s Voices: Stories That Inspire, Empower, and Break Barriers
women, helping them reclaim their narratives and drive change. My work at PICS and Stranger Story is deeply connected, allowing me to elevate stories that make a meaningful impact in the community.
Balancing both roles hasn’t been easy, especially as someone who used to prioritize work over well-being. But I’ve learned that taking care of myself is essential to continuing this work. Setting boundaries and prioritizing my health has made me a stronger leader and advocate.
Stranger Story began from my love of talking to strangers. Fascinated by their experiences, I started writing and sharing their stories on Instagram. The overwhelming response turned it into a fullfledged project and eventually a book. Unlike mainstream media, Stranger Story spotlights everyday people—especially women— making them the stars of their own lives.
One of our most impactful stories, The True Story of an Indian Dentist, went viral with 484.6K impressions,
resonating with young people and helping them make informed career choices. It’s incredible how one woman’s story can inspire an entire generation.
To young women aspiring to leadership roles, my advice is simple: stop doubting yourself. Your voice matters. The community needs your perspective. Don’t waste time feeling less than anyone else—because you’re not.
I owe much of my drive to my parents, who raised my sister and me with the belief that we could achieve anything. Their lessons of hard work, honesty, and service continue to guide me, reminding me that storytelling can be a force for real change.

Rasinder Kaur’s journey in Canada is one of resilience, determination, and service. Arriving as an immigrant in 2004, she faced the struggles of many newcomers—working multiple jobs, navigating an unfamiliar system, and raising a child alone. AlfredoCreamyPasta
Indulge in the rich and velvety flavors of this classic Alfredo pasta, a dish that’s both simple to prepare and utterly satisfying. Perfect for a cozy dinner or a quick weeknight meal, this recipe serves 4 and takes just 20 minutes to make.
Ingredients:
•12 oz (340g) fettuccine or your favorite pasta
•1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter
•1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
•1 cup (100g) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
•3 garlic cloves, minced
•Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
•1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, for depth of flavor)
•Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
1.Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the fettuccine and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta and set aside.
2.Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it brown.
3.Add Cream and Cheese: Pour in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer. Gradually whisk in the grated Parmesan cheese, stirring continuously until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency.
4.Season and Combine: Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss until the noodles are evenly coated in the creamy Alfredo sauce.
5.Serve: Divide the pasta among serving plates. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and an extra sprinkle of Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve immediately while hot.
Tips: For added protein, toss in grilled chicken, shrimp, or sautéed mushrooms. To lighten the dish, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream. Enjoy this decadent Alfredo pasta with a side of garlic bread or a crisp green salad!
Crispy Aloo Tikki
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, boiled peas (if using), chopped onion, green chilies, grated ginger, red chili powder, garam masala, cumin powder, chaat masala, coriander leaves, and salt. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
2. Add Binding Agent: Sprinkle cornflour or rice flour over the mixture and mix again. This helps bind the tikkis and prevents them from breaking while frying.
3. Shape the Tikkis: Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into round, flat patties (about 1/2-inch thick). Ensure they are compact and smooth to avoid cracking.
4. Shallow Fry: Heat oil or ghee in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Carefully place the tikkis in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
5. Serve: Remove the tikkis from the pan and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Serve hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or as a chaat topped with yogurt, chutneys, and sev.
Creamy Tzatziki Dip
Tzatziki is a classic Greek dip known for its creamy texture and refreshing flavors. Made with yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and herbs, it’s a versatile accompaniment to pita bread, grilled meats, or fresh vegetables. This easy recipe takes just 15 minutes to prepare and serves 4-6 people.
Ingredients:
1 and a half cups Greek yogurt (full-fat for creaminess)
1 medium cucumber (about 1 and a half cups grated)
Optional garnish: olive oil, paprika, or a sprig of dill
Instructions:
PreparetheCucumber: Peel the cucumber and grate it using a box grater. Place the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. This step is essential to prevent the tzatziki from becoming watery.
CombineIngredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and chopped dill. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Season: Add salt and pepper to taste. Start with half teaspoon of salt and adjust according to your preference. Remember, the flavors will intensify as the dip chills.
Chill: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the mixture to an airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together. Chilling also helps the dip thicken slightly.
Serve:Before serving, give the tzatziki a quick stir. Drizzle a little olive oil on top and sprinkle with paprika or fresh dill for garnish. Serve with warm pita bread, crunchy vegetables, or as a sauce for gyros, grilled chicken, or kebabs.
Tips:
Use thick, strained Greek yogurt for the best texture.
Adjust the garlic to your taste—add more for a stronger flavor or less for a milder version.
Store tzatziki in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
This cool, tangy, and herbaceous dip is a crowd-pleaser and a must-try for any Mediterranean-inspired meal!

JESSIE SUNNER
MLA FOR SURREY - NEWTON
PARLIAMENTARY
SECRETARY FOR ANTI-RACISM INITIATIVES
Advocate | Lawyer | Public Servant
Jessie Sunner’s journey into politics and public service is deeply rooted in her upbringing as the daughter of Punjabi immigrants in Surrey, British Columbia. Growing up, she witnessed firsthand the sacrifices her parents made to provide her and her brothers with opportunities they could only have dreamed of. Their hard work, resilience, and determination instilled in her a deep appreciation for the importance of community, equity, and justice.
From an early age, Jessie was acutely aware of the structural challenges that impact working families— from healthcare and education to employment and economic security. These lived experiences fueled her passion for human rights, equality, and social justice. She made it her mission to ensure that every family, regardless of background, has the support and opportunities they need to thrive. Through public service, Jessie is now able to fight for policies that uplift and empower people, just as her parents’ sacrifices empowered her.
Championing Workers’ Rights and Social Justice
Before being elected as the MLA for Surrey-Newton, Jessie Sunner served as a Human Rights and Labour lawyer for the Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU). In this role, she witnessed the struggles faced by workers daily, including unsafe working conditions, human rights violations, and job insecurity. Her work with the HEU provided her with firsthand insight into the economic inequalities and systemic barriers that disproportionately impact marginalized communities— particularly racialized women and newcomers in the workforce.
Through her legal advocacy, Jessie fought to protect and strengthen workers’ rights. However, she quickly realized that while legal victories are essential, they are not enough to create lasting change. True progress requires strong policies and political will. Her experiences as a lawyer shaped her belief in the need for systemic solutions that not only safeguard workers’ rights but
also ensure access to safe, fair, and dignified workplaces for all.
Leading Anti-Racism Initiatives in British Columbia
As Parliamentary Secretary for AntiRacism Initiatives, Jessie Sunner is leading efforts to dismantle systemic racism in British Columbia. She understands that in order to effectively address racial inequities, the province must first collect and analyze data to fully grasp the scope of the problem.
In 2022, the B.C. government introduced the Anti-Racism Data Legislation to identify and expose systemic racism within government programs and services. Building on this, in 2024, the government passed the Anti-Racism Legislation, a significant step toward designing solutions that remove barriers faced by Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities.
Jessie’s primary focus is to collaborate with communities across B.C. to develop a comprehensive
action plan by June 1, 2026. This plan will establish clear guidelines for the government to ensure that racialized individuals can equitably access the services they need. Additionally, she is working closely with the Ministry of the Attorney General to strengthen legal tools that combat racism, discrimination, and hate crimes through civil and criminal laws.
For Jessie, anti-racism work is not just about policy—it’s about transforming institutions so that all British Columbians, regardless of race or background, have equal opportunities to succeed.
Fighting for Surrey-Newton
As the MLA for Surrey-Newton, Jessie Sunner is committed to advocating for the priorities of her constituents. During her campaign, she personally knocked on doors, spoke with residents, and listened to their concerns. It became clear that healthcare, safety, and affordability are among the top challenges facing families in Surrey-Newton.
She understands the frustration over the rising cost of living and is determined to push for policies that
make life more affordable. She is also committed to improving access to healthcare, ensuring that families can receive the medical care they need without long wait times or financial barriers.
Additionally, community safety remains a key focus for Jessie. She believes that every resident deserves to feel safe in their neighborhoods, and she is working to ensure that Surrey-Newton receives the necessary resources to enhance public safety, crime prevention, and community well-being.
A Vision for a More Just and Equitable Future
Jessie Sunner’s career—whether as a labour lawyer, human rights advocate, or MLA—has been defined by her commitment to justice, equity, and fairness. Her work is driven by a belief that government must serve all people, not just the privileged few. She is dedicated to breaking down barriers, amplifying marginalized voices, and ensuring that all communities have the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
Her message to the people of Surrey-Newton and beyond is clear: she is listening, she understands the challenges they face, and she is committed to fighting for real solutions.
As an advocate, a legislator, and a daughter of immigrants, Jessie Sunner embodies the resilience, determination, and hope of countless families who have come to British Columbia in search of a better future. Through policy, legislation, and community engagement, she is working tirelessly to create a province where equity, justice, and opportunity are realities for all.
Anju Bedi: A Journey with the Sitar
Anju Bedi’s passion for the sitar began the moment she first heard its mesmerizing sound. At 15, she picked up the instrument and felt an instant connection. Playing the sitar brought her peace, joy, and a deep sense of purpose.
As a female musician in classical Indian music, her journey has been both challenging and rewarding. Moving to Canada, she had to navigate this path independently, but over time, she built her confidence and found her place. Today, she embraces the fusion of cultures in music, collaborating with diverse artists while honoring the sitar’s rich heritage.
Growing up in India, performing publicly was discouraged, and opportunities were limited. After moving to Canada, family responsibilities took priority, and her passion for music had to be set aside. However, as her children grew older, she realized how much she missed
playing. Encouragement from friends led her back to performing, reigniting her love for the sitar. Since then, she has embraced her musical journey, proving that it is never too late to follow one’s dreams.
For Anju, balance is about making space for both her music and family. While performing, teaching, and working full-time at Vancouver Coastal Health, she has learned to prioritize what truly matters. Now, as a grandmother, she continues to embrace all aspects of life.
Anju has witnessed a shift in the representation of women in classical Indian music. While female instrumentalists were once rare, today, more women are stepping forward as performers, composers, and mentors. Organizations like Shakti Society and the India Mahila Association have played a vital role in empowering female artists, and Anju actively contributes to this movement.
Anju strongly believes in mentorship and regularly performs at International Women’s Day events and temple gatherings, inspiring women to pursue music. She has dedicated herself to creating opportunities for aspiring musicians, encouraging them to explore their passion.
Anju’s music has touched lives in profound ways. Whether bringing peace to a listener at a temple performance or evoking deep emotions at a wedding, she has witnessed firsthand the power of music to heal and connect.
Anju’s goal is to continue promoting women’s participation in classical music through mentorship, performances, and advocacy. She hopes to change the perception that music is merely a hobby, inspiring women to pursue their passion at any stage of life.
