hulkari means ‘flower craft’. Phulkari, the rural embroidery tradition of Punjab, is like an embroidered shawl but very vibrant and attractive. Traditionally, Phulkari The art of storytelling has many forms, and this embroidery that finds its roots in Punjab, has a big role to play in not only history, but also in classic and contemporary fashion. As we celebrate the harvest festival of Baisakhi today — also the Punjabi new year — here’s a quick lesson in Phulkari and Bagh kadai (embroidery). EMBROIDERED TALES: The art of this threadwork goes back centuries, marking milestones in a woman’s life. Traditionally, the embroidery was done with silken thread on hand spun fabric by women of the village to commemorate birth, weddings and was worn at auspicious occasions. While phulkari, as the name suggests, connotes the flower motif, bagh (garden) is a variant that includes motifs of birds, plants, intricate geometric shapes, taking over the entire length of the fabric. Apart from these, there are many styles of phulkari and bagh embroidery, based on the type of stitch done and what it aims to depict. These include chope (embroidery done on the borders), reshmi shisha (embroidery that includes mirror work), sainchi (embroidery that includes figurines and scenes), thirma (embroidery done on a white base) and darshan dwar (embroidery depicting gates of a temple).

Vaisakhi with Phulkari: Celebrating Embroidered love and all the colours of punjab with phulkari. The word phulkari was born in the literary domain, when Sufi poet, Waris Shah narrated the tragic love story of Heer and Ranjha in the 18th century. Traditionally, phulkari had more than 50 varieties, depending on what the design connoted and who it was gifted to or made for. Now, the needlework has gone beyond classic odhnis, with cushion covers, keychains and varied interpretations of the art on offer. While hand-done phulkari is highly priced, its machine-made interpretation is cheaper. What are the material used in phulkari? The embroidery is done with floss silk thread on coarse hand woven cotton fabric. Geometrical patterns are usually embroidered on the Phulkaris. Phulkaris and Baghs were worn by women all over Punjab during marriage festivals and other joyous occasions.

Times Cover Story

World Lockdown: Will Coronavirus Curfew Be A Boon For The Environment Levels of air pollutants and warming gases over some cities and regions are showing significant drops as coronavirus impacts work and travel. Researchers in New York told early results showed carbon monoxide mainly from cars had been reduced by nearly 50% compared with last year. Emissions of the planet-heating gas CO2 have also fallen sharply. But there are warnings levels could rise rapidly after the pandemic. A really simple guide to climate change Climate-related words and phrases explainedWith global economic activity ramping down as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it is hardly surprising that emissions of a variety of gases related to energy and transport would be reduced. Scientists say that by May, when CO2 emissions are at their peak thanks to the decomposition of leaves, the levels recorded might be the lowest since the financial crisis over a decade ago. While it is early days, data collected in New York this week suggests that instructions to curb unnecessary travel are having a significant impact. Traffic levels in the city were estimated to be down 35% compared with a year ago. Emissions of carbon monoxide, mainly due to cars and trucks, have fallen by around 50% for a couple of days this week according to researchers at Columbia University. They have also found that there was a 5-10% drop in CO2 over New York and a solid drop in methane as well. “New York has had exceptionally high carbon monoxide numbers for the last year and a half,” said Prof Róisín Commane, from Columbia University, who carried out the New York air monitoring work.

“And this is the cleanest I have ever seen it. It’s is less than half of what we normally see in March.” Eurovision Song Contest cancelled over coronavirus Upgrade for popular UK nature sanctuary ‘The rich are to blame for climate change’ Although there are a number of caveats to these findings, they echo the environmental impacts connected to the virus outbreaks in China and in Italy. An analysis carried out for the climate website Carbon Brief suggested there had been a 25% drop in energy use and emissions in China over a two week period. This is likely to lead to an overall fall of about 1% in China’s carbon emissions this year, experts believe. Both China and Northern Italy have also recorded significant falls in nitrogen dioxide, which is related to reduced car journeys and industrial activity. The gas is a serious air pollutant and also indirectly contributes to the warming of the planet Image caption A European Space Agency satellite image showing levels of nitrogen dioxide over Italy With aviation grinding to a halt and millions of people working from home, a range of emissions across many countries are likely following the same downward path. While people working from home will likely increase the use of home heating and electricity, the curbing of commuting and the general slowdown in economies will likely have an impact on overall emissions. “I expect we will have the smallest increase in May to May peak CO2 that we’ve had in the northern hemisphere since 2009, or even before,” said Prof Commane. This view is echoed by others in the field, who believe that the shutdown will impact CO2 levels for the whole of this year. “It will

12

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

depend on how long the pandemic lasts, and how widespread the slowdown is in the economy particularly in the US. But most likely I think we will see something in the global emissions this year,” said Prof Corinne Le Quéré from the University of East Anglia. “If it lasts another three of four months, certainly we could see some reduction.” Empty beaches and turtles To protect public health, all airports, seaports, beaches, schools, restaurants and other businesses are closed until May 4. Cruise ships are also banned, with the only port, on the island of Grand Turk, shut until June 30. A curfew means residents can leave home only for essentials, or for exercise at specific times of day. The Ministry of Environment didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Coronavirus of the underwater world SCTLD appeared in the Turks and Caicos last year after showing up in Florida in 2014. It’s dubbed “a lethal disease” by the International Coral Reef Initiative, while others suggest it’s like the coronavirus of the underwater world. Experts are unsure of the cause, but TCI divers have been told to disinfect their gear to avoid passing the disease from site to site, and there’s hope its spread could be slowed with fewer divers and boats in the water. But Karen Neely, a scientist with Florida’s Nova University who has been heavily involved in SCTLD research, guesses it’s unlikely to make a difference.

Yucatan Peninsula Coral is important in the Turks and Caicos for coastal protection GETTY IMAGES FOR LUMIX “We have no evidence to suggest that within a region of the Caribbean, humans have anything to do with transmission,” she explains. However, she thinks that spread to new, unaffected regions of the world could possibly be reduced due to the lockdown. “While we have no way of knowing how SCTLD got to the TCI, or USVI, or St Martin, or Mexico, the best working hypothesis is shipping traffic. If shipping traffic is reduced, the probability of infection of new areas would be as well.” ‘An incredible chance’ Oceanographer and president of the Central Caribbean Marine Institute, Carrie Manfrino, wraps up the debate. She argues that in the short term, the lockdown could indeed improve water quality and reduce pollution, but that a few weeks or months won’t be enough for corals and reefs to recover from decades of decline. Nonetheless, she believes it’s “an incredible chance” for us to consider the impact of human activity on the planet, and that the immediate consequences of a global pause — such as wildlife sightings, cleaner air and water — might inspire governments to expand their protected areas. She says: “The long-term impact (of the lockdown) is that we can see that we can make a difference.”

Rashami Desai: A Name of Resilience and Strength

B

orn on the 13th of February, 1986, as Shivani Desai. Later named as Rashami Desai was born to Ajay Desai and Rasila Desai. As fate would have it, little Rashami lost her father at a tender age and grew up with her mother and her little brother, Gaurav Desai.Rashami did her schooling from JB Khot Primary School of Mumbai, and did her further studies from NM college in Mumbai. Rashami’s mother played a big role in Rashami’s career as she encouraged her to audition and be the successful actress she wanted to become. During the time she was pursuing her diploma, Rashami received her first acting assignment in 2002 for which she played a cameo in the Assamese film, Kanyadaan. Post the assignment, she ventured into the Bhojpuri film industry. With dreams of becoming a successful and making her own place in the acting industry, Rashami took up Bhojpuri film projects. Between 2004 and 2006, she did Bhojpuri films like Balma Bada Nadaan, Nadiya Ke Teer, Gabbar Singh, Dulha Babu, and many more! She never once hesitated about the size of the platform given to her, what mattered to her was that she was given a platform to showcase her talent, and she gave it her all. n 2006, she got noticed and got offered a role in the daily soap ‘Raavan’ which marked her debut in the TV industry. After Raavan, she only got more and more successful with every TV serial she got offered. She appeared in the TV serial Pari Hoon Main in 2007, and waiting was a TV character for her who was to take her career to new heights- Tapasya. In the year 2009, Rashami was offered the role of Tapasya in the show Uttaran which became an instant favourite in every Indian household. Although her role was negative, she brought her own charisma into the character. The show aired in other countries as well, and Tapasya aka Tapu earned fans across Indonesia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Jabaran, Romania, Sri Lanka, Nepal among many other countries. Amidst the roaring success of the TV show, Rashami fell in love with her co-star, Nandish Sandhu and the duo got married in 2012. By 2014 Uttaran went off air, and sadly, during the same time, the couple decided to part ways. Although not officially separated, they tried to reconcile their differences by participating in the dance reality show, Nach Baliye. But again, as fate would have it, they made the final call to call it quits in 2015. Although the show played a major role in showcasing her amazing dancing skills, it didn’t do any good for her relationship with Nandish. The year 2017 proved to be a great comeback for Rashami as she bagged the lead role in the TV show Dil Se Dil Tak. Her role as Shorvori was loved worldwide and her chemistry with her co-star Parth aka Sidharth Shukla was loved by all the fans. The show had a total of 345 episodes, but went off air in the year 2018 due to irreconcilable differences between the both. The show was missed by many fans who enjoyed seeing the pair together but their differences made it impossible for them to continue doing the show together. It was either her, or him, and Rashami decided to call it quits, and Sidharth later quite as well.

18

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

A year passed by, and 2019 brought a new wave of change in Rashami’s life. Rashami, who refused to be part of reality show Bigg Boss, finally accepted the offer. Her fans are delighted to see on their TV screens once again, but this time, Rashami is seen in an all new avatar. Also part of the show is Sidharth Shukla who is meeting Rashami after their time on Dil Se Dil Tak. Although the two seemed fine in the beginning, the two started indulging in explosive fights during their first few weeks in the house. Soon entered beau, Arhaan Khan, who was never before seen or introduced to Rashami’s fans. Arhaan Khan appeared like a total gentleman shielding his lady from angry man, Sidharth Shukla. He even claimed that he’d propose to Rashami during his time in the BB house which made the fans believe that Rashami will finally be in a happy marriage. But the fans love for him instantly turned into hate when one day host Salman Khan revealed that he was married and has a child. These facts were kept away from Rashami, but being the amazing actor she is, she pretended to have already known about the truth. She concealed the truth, but she couldn’t conceal her sadness. Her distress was seen in the form of her tears, anger, and loneliness. Her game in the Bigg Boss house weakened by the day, and soon, she found herself being targeted by every housemate. She was humiliated, and insulted with taunts, and actions that would push one to have an emotional breakdown. She was seen crying for many days. Many of her industry friends outside the house kept mum, and refused to even talk about her in interviews. But her brother, Gaurav Desai was sent in to console her and support her morally. Her best friend also her Social Media Manager Jeevita Oberoi took help from Devoleena Bhattacharjee her friend whom she got close to while doing BiggBoss to make Rashami understand and aware about this guy and also her other friend Kamya Punjabi, and many others tried to get her to face the truth about Arhaan’s reality. Rashami took her own time to contemplate her decisions, thoughts and feelings, and soon the tables turned, and she became the game changer! She went from having to be consoled to consoling her housemates. She ignored her weaknesses, and became everyone else’s strength. She started to perform phenomenally in tasks, and had an answer to every taunt that was thrown at her. It’s almost like she remembered who she was and then the whole game changed! Bigg Boss then held a press conference inside the Bigg Boss house. During the press

conference, she officially declared the end of her relationship with Arhaan Khan. Rashami was declared as the most deserved for the BB Elite club membership by the media fraternity! Soon, she started to receive support from the industry. Actors like Yuvika Chaudhary, Sana Khan, Mrunal Jain, Gaurav Chopra, and many others extended the hand of support to Rashami Desai. With her fresh energy and optimism, she managed to develop cordial relations with everyone who was previously against her. She even reconciled her relation with Sidharth Shukla and her blue days became a thing of the past. In one of the videos, she was seen cheerfully talking by herself. During the talk, she concluded, “Jab hum apne aap ko achchi tarah samajh lete hai, toh doosre kya samajhte hai, it doesn’t matter.” This powerful statement reflected in her actions and reactions towards the housemates who intentionally tried to bring her down, but Rashami stood unshakeable. With her strong willpower, optimism and her stance for herself, Rashami has become an inspiration for everyone, and is now the new favourite actor on as well as off screen. She taught us that it’s okay to be vulnerable, and that it is okay to be sensitive. And she also taught us how the world changes when we change. What makes her journey in the BB house so interesting is the fact that she fell and rose again before everyone’s eyes, and the transformation in her is truly inspirational for many. Finally the day came when Rashami became one of the finalist of the Bigg Boss show. She maintained her grace and dignity till the end. Even if she did not win the show but she won the hearts of millions. Twitter has flooded with endless hashtags like # Queen of Hearts Rashami, # The Invincible Rashami. Bigg Boss 13 won Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Award 2020, where Rashami impressed everyone with her powerful speech about her journey as a woman in her life.

“On the International Women’s Day, we congratulate Rashami Desai being a Solid woman who overcame everything that was meant to destroy her. We are so very proud of HER.”

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

1. USE REUSABLE BAGS Plastic grocery-type bags that get thrown out end up in landfills or in other parts of the environment. These can suffocate animals who get stuck in them or may mistake them for food. Also, it takes a while for the bags to decompose. Whether you are shopping for food, clothes or books, use a reusable bag. This cuts down on litter and prevents animals from getting a hold of them. There are even some stores (such as Target) that offer discounts for using reusable bags! These bags are useful for things other than shopping as well. I have heard of people using reusable bags when they move! If you forget your bags at home, buy a new one. Better yet, keep a couple bags in your car so you never leave home without them (just make sure you remember you put them there)! If you are in a position where you need to use the plastic bags, reuse them the next time you go shopping, or use them for something else. 2. PRINT AS LITTLE AS NECESSARY We have all had that teacher that wanted us to have a copy of every single reading when we come to class, or that professor who wanted a hard copy of the ten-page paper that is due next week. These are fine but it seems as if they do not understand that using so much paper is detrimental to the environment. What can you do? Ask your teacher if you can bring a laptop or an e-reader to class so that you can download the reading onto that and read it from there. If not, print on both sides of the page to reduce the amount of paper used. If you need to turn in a long paper, ask the professor if it is okay to print on both sides of the page and explain why you’re asking. Most teachers care about the environment as well and would be willing to allow you to do so. 3. RECYCLE Recycling is such a simple thing to do, but so many people don’t do it. Many garbage disposal companies offer recycling services, so check with the company you use to see if they can help you get started! It is as simple as getting a bin and putting it out with your trash cans for free! Also, check with your RA to see if recycling options are offered in your dorm. Another way to recycle is to look for recycling cans near trashcans. Instead of throwing recyclables in the trash with your non-recyclables, make a point to take an extra step to locate recycling cans around your campus. 4. USE A REUSABLE BEVERAGE CONTAINERS Instead of buying individually-packaged drinks, consider buying a bulk container of the beverage you want and buying a reusable water bottle. Not only will this help the environment, but it will also help you save money since you are buying a bulk container. Many campuses offer water fountains designed for drinking as well as for refilling reusable water bottles. Make use of these fountains throughout the day when you finish off the initial beverage. A lot of coffee shops even offer a discount to customers who use a reusable container for their drinks.

Simple Ways

TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT Every little thing YOU do really makes a difference!

5. DON’T THROW YOUR NOTES AWAY At the end of the semester, students are often stuck with notes they don’t need anymore, especially from GenEd classes that had little, if anything, to do with their major. The good news is that teachers that teach GenEd classes have to keep their material consistent with guidelines from the college/university. This means that students next semester will be learning basically the same material you learned from a class. If you took great notes, ask your teacher to connect you with students in a future class so that you can give them your notes. These notes will help students by being able to read what they are learning in the words of another student. Ask around to see if any organization has something like this. If you can’t find anyone to give the notes to, at the very least, recycle the paper you used. 6. SAVE ELECTRICITY! Use energy-efficient light bulbs instead of regular bulbs. They last longer, which will save you a bit of money (every little bit helps on a college budget, right?). Make you turn off lights, the TV, and other appliances when you are not using them. Lower your air conditioning or heat when it’s not necessary. This is especially true for between seasons. Open your windows in the early fall or layering your clothes in the early fall. 7. SAVE WATER

20

Times

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

Environment

Water is wasted more frequently than we can see. Turn off the faucet as you are brushing your teeth. Don’t turn your shower on until you’re ready to get in and wash your hair. Limit your water usage as you wash dishes. Changing old habits will be good for both the environment and your wallet! 8. AVOID TAKING CARS OR CARPOOL WHEN POSSIBLE

Cars are harmful to the environment. Taking public transportation, walking, or riding a bike to class are better options that help the environment and your budget, as well as getting some exercise in! If you do need to use your car, compare schedules and places of residency with those in your classes. You can split the cost of gas and have alternating schedules for who drives when. This is cheaper than everyone driving separately and you’ll be closer with friends!

Dealing with a Builder’s Lien Filed Against Your Property By- Ravneet Arora (Lawyer) The Builder’s Lien Act is designed to protect all parties involved in a construction project, including property owners and developers, not just contractors or subcontractors, which is generally believed to the case. However, due to the ease with which contractors or subcontractors can file builders’ liens against properties and the significant consequences that flow from the filing of a builder’s lien, the process lends itself to misuse. Luckily, there are a few steps that an owner or developer can take to deal with a builder’s lien, 1. Check whether the lien is invalid due to being time-barred Contrary to popular belief, the 45-day time period for filing a builder’s lien does not always commence on the last day on which you performed work at the jobsite. Multiple events can trigger the running of the time period, including substantial performance of the contract or subcontract, termination of contract, and abandonment of the project. Sometimes the time period for filing a builder’s lien expires even before a subcontractor starts performing work, depending on the performance of the contract of the contractor that hires the subcontractor. 2. Issue a 21-Day Notice to Commence Action When dealing with a frivolous builder’s lien, it may be helpful to issue a 21-Day Notice to Commence Action to the lien claimant. As the name suggests, upon receipt of the notice, the lien claimant must commence action to enforce the lien in the Supreme Court of British Columbia or lose its lien rights. Commencing an action and subsequently perfecting the lien to maintain lien rights is

a relatively complex procedure which typically requires a lien claimant to retain a litigator. Issuance of the 21-day notice significantly increases the chances of frivolous liens being weeded out. 3.Secure the lien to have it removed from title Before or after an action is commenced to enforce a builder’s lien, an owner or developer has the ability to have the lien removed from title by securing the lien, i.e. posting money either in court or a lawyer’s trust account in an amount equal to the owner or developer’s maximum liability under the Act. If the owner or developer has been making payments to subcontractors on time and has followed the holdback provisions of the Act, liability may be capped at the amount of the holdback, which is usually 10% of the contract price. Otherwise, the face value of the builder’s lien must be secured. The Builders Lien Act is complex with many nuances. If you need help dealing with a builder’s lien filed against your property, Please call us.

If an adult dies without a will, the BC law gets to have a say on how your property will get distributed, and who has the right to “administer” his or her affairs. In a will, you can appoint a guardian to look after your young children if you leave behind after you die. If you die without a will, the court will need to appoint a guardian if you leave behind children under 19, and your other spouse isn’t alive. If an adult passes away without a will and leaves behind a person such as a minor child who has entitlement to a share of the of estate, and a minor child is not of 19 years of age, the BC law states that the share has to be paid to the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC, and who in turn becomes the trustee and they will be trusted to hold a minor’s share in an estate until they’re 19 years of age. If you pass away without a will, then that means you have not appointed an executor to manage your affairs once you die. Someone will need to apply to court so they can legally deal with your estate. An administrator is a person appointed by the court to manage estate( who did not prepare his or her will). The people who can apply to administer the estate are listed under the law by order of priority. Do you have a will? SUPER VISA INSURANCE: IMPORTANT FACTS By: Sandeep Ahuja

C

anada is a land of abundant opportunities which attracts a large number of visitors every year, who arrive in this country to share its opportunities and better quality of life. These visitors include students, businessmen, temporary workers and tourists from different nations of the world Depending upon their country of residence and the reason for coming to Canada, their entry requirements may vary. In some cases, this will mean applying for a visitor’s visa. While residents of many countries are exempt from these types of visas, for an extended stay, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. This may lead you to think that there is a backlog of applicants for this type of special visa. However, eligible parents or grandparents have very bright chances of a fast approval by applying for a Super Visa. This new type of visa has been in existence for over eight years (started- Dec 1, 2011) and is already proving to be an extremely popular option that is reuniting families across Canada.

Super Visa Insurance: Meaning

The Canadians enjoy the benefits of a first class health care system that provides full coverage for all of its citizens. Just because the Canadians are covered, it doesn’t mean that visitors will be able to take advantage of the same benefits. In fact, any visitor who needs any kind of medical care will have to pay for it out of his/her own pocket. The only exception would be if that visitor had a traveller’s insurance. With the Super Visa application, this type of insurance policy is a requirement. An applicant for a Super Visa must submit proof that they have medical insurance. That policy will need to be: 1. Valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada 2. Provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage 3. Covers the person for health care, hospitalization and repatriation (returning to their home country) Since you have to get this policy in place before applying for the Super Visa, there are refunds available in case you are denied the Super Visa status. This insurance policy should also be issued from a Canadian insurance company which eventually, protects the government and the applicant by making the direct payment process easier. Depending upon the circumstances, you could also obtain Super Visa insurance if you have a pre-existing condition. It will depend upon what that condition is and, whether or not it has been stable for 3 to 6 months.

To be eligible for a Super Visa, you’ll need to provide the following information: 4The person’s ties to the home country 4The purpose of the visit 4The person’s family and financial situation 4A written commitment of financial support from the Canadian child or grandchild who meets a minimum income threshold 4 Complete Immigration Medical Examination 4Proof of Canadian medical insurance (very important) Keep in mind that even if you’re from a country that doesn’t require a visa, (United States, France, Germany and Italy, to name a few) you can still apply for the Super Visa if you wish to stay longer than six months

Worth of Super Visa Insurance Undeniably, at some point in our lives, we’re going to need healthcare. But a major question is ‘when to buy insurance’ and ‘how much will it cost’? A visitor coming to Canada is not required to purchase insurance; only those applying for a Super Visa need a policy. However, when you consider that an average day in a hospital could cost above $3,000, (not to mention the additional charges to return to your home country) you can see that a medical emergency could quickly wipe out your savings if you aren’t covered by insurance. Then, why take the risk?

Visa insurance policies are a low cost way of providing peace of mind to any Canadian visitor. A simple neglect to purchase adequate insurance may sometimes lead to hundreds/thousands of dollars at stake during a medical emergency. But prior to purchasing insurance, it is extremely important to ascertain the medical history of your parents for any pre-existing medical conditions. Your parents can either tell this to your insurance advisor or, you can confirm the same from your parents and convey to the advisor. It is evident that Super Visa Insurance is a valuable investment which takes care of the medical expenses associated with the necessary treatment of your near and dear ones during their stay in Canada, thereby offering you peace of mind about their well being. As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for Super Visa insurance. I can explain to you in detail, various insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources.

Well, try this color that’s just as bold and vibrant as you! It’s a powerful color, representing excitement and energy. And what season embodies excitement and energy more than summer? 2. Blush Pink This softest shade of pink is one of our very favorite colors. Blush, blush pink, millennial pink… whatever you want to call it, it is a pastel hue that is most definitely not reserved solely for spring and Easter. Blush can really act as a neutral, as it goes with almost anything in your closet, yet still has that feminine flair we love. With it being one of the colors of the year a couple years back (rose quartz to be exact), it still remains at center stage. We simply adore this sweet shade!

3. Burnt Orange Maybe not an obvious choice, but burnt orange has gained momentum this year. Runways and celebrities and street style stars back us up on this. Burnt orange is trending! And we are here for it – and not just because I’m a Texas Longhorn. Now, I understand that this color can be tricky to pull off, particularly in summertime. But don’t worry – we’ve got ya covered.

4. Yellow Would this list be complete without yellow? Absolutely not! The color of the sun and the happiest color out there, yellow screams summer year after year. It can instantly boost your mood simply by putting on a yellow article of clothing, and it’s guaranteed to bring smiles to those around you, too. Let it be known that we are not merely suggesting a mellow yellow. Heck no! Bring on the bold, bright version of this color. Shine like the sunshine!

N

obody is born with limitless self-confidence. If someone seems to have incredible self-confidence, it’s because he or she has worked on building it for years. Self-confidence is something that you learn to build up because the challenging world of business, and life in general, can deflate it.

1. Visualize yourself as you want to be

Visualization is the technique of seeing an image of yourself that you are proud of, in your own mind. When we struggle with low self-confidence, we have a poor perception of ourselves that is of-ten inaccurate. Practice visualizing a fantastic version of yourself, achieving your goals.

2. Affirm yourself

We tend to behave in accordance with our own self-image. The trick to making lasting change is to change how you view yourself. Affirmations are positive and uplifting statements that we say to ourselves. We tend to believe whatever we tell ourselves constantly. For example, if you hate your own physi-cal appearance, practice saying something that you appreciate or like about yourself when you next look in the mirror.

3. Do one thing that scares you every day

“What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” - Napoleon Hill “Affirmations are a powerful tool to deliberately install desired beliefs about yourself.” - Nikki Carnevale “If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.” - T. Harv Eker

The best way to overcome fear is to face it head-on. By doing some-thing that scares you every day and gaining confidence from every experience, you will see your self-confidence soar. So get out of your comfort zone and face your fears!

“You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” - Louise L. Hay

4. Question your inner critic

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

If you struggle with low self-confidence, there is a possibility that your inner critic has become overactive and inaccurate. Strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy help you to question your inner critic, and look for evidence to support or deny the things that your inner critic is saying to you. For example, if you think that you are a failure, ask yourself, “What evidence is there to support the thought that I am a failure?” and “What evidence is there that doesn’t support the thought that I am a failure?” Find opportunities to congratulate, compliment and reward yourself, even for the smallest successes.

5. Take the 100 days of rejection challenge

Jia Jiang has become famous for recording his experience of “bust-ing fear” by purposefully making crazy requests of people in order to be rejected over 100 days. His purpose was to desensitize himself to rejection, after he became more upset than he expected over re-jection from a potential investor. Busting fear isn’t easy to do, but if you want to have fun while building up your self-confidence, this is a powerful way to do it.

“To establish true self-confidence, we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.” - Denis Waitley “Self-care is never a selfish act -- it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” - Parker Palm-er “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” - Harvey Fierstein “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.” - Mari-lyn Monroe “Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand brake on.” - Maxwell Maltz

TIPS TO ENHANCE

CONFIDENCE AND SELF ESTEEM

6. Set yourself up to win.

Too many people are discouraged about their abilities because they set themselves goals that are too difficult to achieve. Start by set-ting yourself small goals that you can win easily. Once you have built a stream of successes that make you feel good about yourself, you can then move on to harder goals. Make sure that you also keep a list of all your achievements, both large and small, to remind yourself of the times that you have done well. Instead of focusing only on “to-do” lists, I like to spend time re-flecting on “did-it” lists.

7. Help someone else.

Helping someone else often enables us to forget about ourselves and to feel grateful for what we have. It also feels good when you are able to make a difference for someone else. Instead of focusing on your own weaknesses, volunteer to mentor, assist or teach another, and you’ll see your self-confidence grow automatically in the process.

8. Care for yourself.

Self-confidence depends on a combination of good physical

health, emotional health and social health. It is hard to feel good about yourself if you hate your physique or constantly have low energy. Make time to cultivate great exercise, eating and sleep habits. In addition, dress the way you want to feel. You have heard the saying that “clothes make the man.” Build your self-confidence by making the effort to look after your own needs.

9. Create personal boundaries.

Learn to say no. Teach others to respect your personal boundaries. If necessary, take classes on how to be more assertive and learn to ask for what you want. The more control and say that you have over your own life, the greater will be your self-confidence.

10. Shift to an equality mentality.

People with low self-confidence see others as better or more de-serving than themselves. Instead of carrying this perception, see yourself as being equal to everyone. They are no better or more de-serving than you. Make a mental shift to an equality mentality and you will automatically see an improvement in your self-confidence.

Aloo Tikki – an Indian street food made with fried potatoes, peas, and onions that can be easily made at home. Soooo delicious!

INGREDIENTS

• 3 large potatoes, peeled, boiled and mashed • 3/4 cup frozen peas (uncooked) • 1/2 large onion, chopped • 1 jalapeno pepper, minced • 1 tsp. chili powder • 2 tsp. garam masala • 1 tsp. cumin powder • 1 tbs. grated ginger • 1 handful fresh parsley or cilantro leaves, chopped • 2 tbs. bread crumbs (I used panko) • 4 tbs. flour

METHOD:

1.Once the potatoes have been boiled and mashed, add in all the other ingredients. 2.Form into patties (you should be able to get 8 large patties or 10 smaller ones). 3.Heat a little oil over medium-high heat and fry a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain and cool on paper towels. 4.Serve with any kind of sauce you like (I served it with a cottage/ricotta cheese mixture, but I imagine this would be delicious with some kind of chutney)!

Sugarcane Kheer Recipe

Sugarcane is an ingredient that was used in plenty in the country. But it’s losing its charm aand usage as a cooking ingredient. I have always believed that unprocessed sugarcane juice is a healthier form of sugar, as compared to processed sugar. It was a great seasonal source of sweetness throughout our history, and featured in many traditional recipes. Among many forgotten seasonal recipes the one that stands out in my memory is Rasawal, an old Lucknowi recipe-basically a kheer made with rice and sugarcane juice.

INGREDIENTS:

=1 cup new rice, soaked =3 litres sugarcane juice or ganne ka ras =1/2 cup coconut =3 tsp ghee =1 clove =1/2 cup milk

METHOD:

1. Boil the sugarcane juice in a wok, and add 1/2 cup milk gradually. Let it boil and you will notice the impurities are floating above. Now you have to take all the impurities off using a spatula. Keep adding the milk slowly, and keep removing the impurities every 5 minutes for the next 60 minutes or till you get a golden colour texture of the juice. 2. Once the juice is reduced to half after removing all the impurities, add the soaked rice into it. Cover the pot and cook on a slow heat for 40- 50 minutes, or till you get a thick consistency. 3. Now heat the ghee in a pan and add cloves, add these tempered ingredients, and chopped coconut to the Rasawal. Mix it well and let it cool. Serve warm. This recipe is so easy to make that you’ll find yourself coming back to this dish for every occasion, whether they’re festivals or just dinner parties. Every time you serve it with pride and a smile, the taste and flavours will take you and your loved ones back to an age when life was simpler, and the food forever enjoyable.

Essential Spices for

Indian Cooking 1. Cardamom Green is used for everything from spice mixes to lassis to Indian desserts. The flavor is light and sweet, with a mild eucalyptus note. Green cardamom can be blended whole when making spice mixes, like garam masala, however when using them in sweets or desserts, you would pop the pod open and lightly crush the fragrant black seeds before using. Black cardamom, on the other hand, is very powerful and smoky, and needs to be used with a lot of caution. 2. Clove Clove is a common spice in Indian cooking and its anise notes are eas-ily recognizable in many Indian preparations. The strong, almost me-dicinal flavor of clove comes from the concentration of essential oils. Cloves are technically flowers, and a lot of their oils are pressed out before they are dried and used in cooking. 3. Cassia bark Cassia bark is an interesting spice. Also known as Chinese cinnamon, it is a genus of the cinnamon tree. Cinnamon is a little bit different from cassia, and usually differentiated by being called “true cinna-mon. Cassia is cheaper to produce, and the majority of ground cin-namon is actually made from cassia bark. Indians use cassia instead of true cinnamon in their cooking, as it has a milder flavor and can be used in larger quantities. 4. Black pepper Black pepper is actually native to India, primarily from the Western Ghats and Malabar region. It is a surprisingly hard spice to grow, as it depends on many natural cycles, like a set amount of rainfall, which is why prices for fresh pepper vary a lot. Like

56

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

most spices, black pepper needs to be toasted before blending. 5. Cumin Cumin is used frequently whole and in spice mixes to add a charac-teristic smoky note to Indian dishes. It can be identified by its distinct ridged brown seeds and intense fragrance. It is sometimes confused with fennel, caraway, and anise seeds, but you can tell the difference by looking at its color (brown, as opposed to green fennel) and taste (smoky, as opposed to a stronger licorice taste).

inter-changeably in Indian cooking. The flavor of mustard seeds is released when they are crushed or cooked in oil. Their smoky, nutty flavor is a staple in curries and curry powders, and mustard oil is commonly used in the North of India. 9. Fenugreek Fenugreek is the spice which gives Madras curry powder its very characteristic, earthy, musky “curry flavor and fragrance. The seeds are yellowish and look like tiny wheat kernels. Fenugreek leaves are also dried and used as a spice (they are commonly called kasuri me-thi) and are what make butter chicken unique.

6. Coriander Coriander is probably the most ubiquitous of spices in the Indian spice rack. It is one of the oldest-known spices in the world, and it’s charac-terized by its golden-yellow color and gently ridged texture. The seeds are very aromatic with citrus notes. Whole coriander is used as a base for many spice mixes, and ground coriander is one of the most commonly used ground spices in Indian cuisine.

10. Turmeric Turmeric is another common Indian spice. Grown as a rhizome, it can be used fresh (like ginger) or dried. It has been known to have a host of health benefits and is used in a lot of spice mixes and curries. The flavor of fresh turmeric is slightly stronger than dried, and it stains very easily, so make sure you are careful with your clothes and uten-sils while using it.

7. Nutmeg and mace Two of my favorite spices, nutmeg and mace, are used a lot in Indian cooking. Mace is the dark-red outer covering of the nutmeg. Fresh nutmeg is processed by removing the pulpy outside and sliding off the mace. It has a tough outer covering that needs to be cracked off before grating.

11. Saffron The most expensive spice in the world, saffron is actually more valua-ble by weight than gold, due to the fact that it is one of the most labor-intensive spices to produce. Saffron is the stigma of crocus flowers and needs to be picked by hand. The best saffron is dark-red in color and comes from Kashmir, Iran, or Spain. The fresher the saffron, the deeper the color.

8. Mustard seeds Mustard seeds can be yellow, black, or brown and are used

ORANGE JUICE Down a glass of juice in the morning to fill up on folate, potassium and, of course, vitamin C. Ybirth defects early on in pregnancy, and for ensuring a healthy pregnancy after that, so try to get the recommended 400 micrograms a day. The potassium in OJ is important for keeping your muscle function, metabolism and overall health in check. Like iron, pregnant women need to consume more potassium because of their expanding blood volume. And as you al-ready know, orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C, which, in addi-tion to fighting colds, helps your body better absorb iron and keeps both your and baby’s teeth and bones healthy.

Staying Healthy

During Pregnancy Essential Foods

to include in your diet

YOGURT Yogurt contains slightly more calcium than milk. Plus, it’s got essential bone-building nutrients, including protein, B vitamins and zinc.Calcium is essential for keeping your bones and teeth healthy and helping baby to develop his, and skimping on this key nutrient could put you both at risk. Expectant moms should get 1,000 mg of calcium a day to reduce the risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery. OATMEAL Those oats are filled with fiber, protein and vitamin B6. Start your morning off right with a nice big bowl of oatmeal. Whole grains are great for keeping your energy levels up, especially if morning sickness has you feeling a bit drained. Plus, all that fiber will help with another pregnancy pleasantry: constipation. But the benefits don’t just stop with mom.

SALMON This oily fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and protein.Try to incorporate salmon into your diet over the next nine months. The omega-3 fatty acids (aka DHA and EPA) in fish help baby’s brain to develop, and higher levels of DHA in newborns have even been associated with higher IQs, advanced motor skills and fewer neurologi-cal problems later on. Omega-3s are good for the development of baby’s eyes too, and salmon is also a great source of lean protein for momsto-be. W

T

here’s nothing like finding out you’re pregnant to encourage better eating habits. After all, your body is going through big changes, and both you and baby need a full dose of vitamins and nutrients to stay well and strong. But what counts as healthy food for pregnancy? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered the best foods to eat when pregnant, and why. A woman’s health is essential to the good health of her baby. Women who eat well and exercise regularly along with regular prenatal care are less likely to have complications during pregnancy. They’re also more likely to successfully give birth to a healthy baby.

Nutrition Eating a nutritious diet during pregnancy is linked to good fetal brain development, a healthy birth weight, and it reduces the risk of many birth defects. A balanced diet will also reduce the risks of anemia, as well as other unpleasant pregnancy symptoms such as fatigue and morning sickness. Good nutrition is thought to help balance mood swings and it may improve labor and delivery as well.

A well-balanced pregnancy diet includes: 4Protein 4Vitamin C 4Calcium 4Fruits and vegetables 4Whole grains 4Iron-rich foods 4Adequate fat 4Folic acid

LEAFY GREENS

You had to know these guys were gonna make the list. Chock-full of antioxidants and nutrients, dark-green veggies—including spinach, asparagus, broccoli and kale—should be on everyone’s pregnancy grocery list. Why it’s good for both of you: These superfoods are especially important for moms-to-be and developing babies. That’s because, in addition to all those antioxidants, leafy greens supply calcium, potassium, fiber, folate and vita-min. NUTS

What they’ve got: This crunchy (and convenient) snack is full of healthy fats (including those brain-boosting omega-3s we mentioned earlier), protein, fi-ber and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Why they’re good for both of you: Munching on magnesium-rich foods helps reduce the risk of premature labor and aids in the development of baby’s nervous system. A cup of sliced almonds contains nearly 250 mg of magnesi-um, so keep a stash in your purse for a convenient prenatal power snack. SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes are full of nutritious fiber, vitamin B6, potassium (even more than bananas have!), vitamin C and iron, as well as copper and beta-carotene. Sure, other foods on our list offer many of the same nutrients, but we’re singling out sweet potatoes for their betacarotene, an antioxidant that your body converts to vitamin A. And as you may recall, vitamin A plays an important role in the development of baby’s eyes, bones and skin. These orange spuds are also a great way to meet your iron quota, and also contain copper, a mineral that helps your body absorb iron. EGGS

Whether you like them fried, scrambled, hard-boiled or served as an omelet, eggs are the gold standard for prenatal protein. They also hap-pen to be a great source of folate, iron and choline. Not only are eggs a relatively cheap, versatile and convenient source of protein, but they contain choline too.

1. Hockey is more expensive than equestrian Equestrian is often viewed as an activity for the rich, but it turns out that hockey has become a more elitist sport in this country when it comes to cost. The average cost for a child to be involved with hockey is $1,666 annually—making it the second-most expensive organized sport in Canada. Equestrian, on the other hand, comes in third at $1,434 per year. For the record, water skiing is the most expensive sport for kids—although it’s pretty much a niche activity. 2. More Canadian kids are in dance than in hockey Canada is best known as an international hockey powerhouse, but the price of the sport may be making it less popular amongst kids in this country. Hockey is only the fourth most popular sport in this country, with 531,000 kids participating annually. Surprisingly, more kids are involved in dance in Canada, as 625,000 kids are part of a dance program.

KIDS SPORTS IN CANADA Solutions Research Group (SRG) interviewed more than 2,000 Canadian families recently and found some interesting trends and figures. And while many people think that hockey and Canada are synonymous, this study shows that parents may be shying away from the sport because of the associated costs. Here are interesting facts to come out of the study on kids’ sports in Canada:

66

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

3. Girls like individual sports rather than team sports Perhaps a big reason why dance is more popular than hockey in this country is because young girls are more drawn to individual sports. According to the research in this study, more girls aged 3-17 are registered in dance, ballet and gymnastics (24 percent of all girls) than girls participating in all team sports combined (22 percent). And while you might think that girl’s hockey is exploding in popularity, it still doesn’t crack the top 10 of sports for young girls. Things like basketball, volleyball and trampoline are still ahead of it. 4. Swimming is the most popular organized sport This probably comes as little surprise for parents, but swimming is the most popular sport/activity amongst kids by a healthy margin. More than 1.1 million Canadian kids are part of a swimming program and it’s fairly easy to see the reasons why. Price is the biggest factor in this, as it costs $408 annually to put a child in swimming in this country—about a quarter of the cost of hockey. And since swimming lessons also provide a valuable life skill, many parents feel compelled to put their kids in the pool at a young age.

5. Soccer is most popular team sport More than 750,000 kids are part of a soccer program, making it the most popular team activity in Canada. Soccer dominated the age demographics as well, as it was the most popular team sport for kids 3-6, 7-12 and teens 13-17. And in every region—British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada— soccer came out on top for team sports.

6. Skateboarding has the worst reputation for injuries Even though soccer is the number one activity causing injuries for boys and girls, it doesn’t strike fear into the hearts of parents. Parents were asked which sports were likely to cause the most injuries and skateboarding came away as the top answer. Rugby, wrestling and skiing came in next on the list and trampoline even cracked the top 10.

67

KIDS SPORTS IN CANADA

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

6. Softball is the cheapest sports to participate in If you want to put your kid into a cheaper sport, softball is the way to go. The annual cost is $295—a fraction of what you would pay for other sports. The study also found that sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer cost 25 percent to 50 percent less than average sports—largely because there isn’t a lot of equipment involved with these activities. 7. More than 1 million kids suffer a sports-related injury each year One in every five kids who is involved with a sport or activity will suffer an injury over the course of a year. That’s about 1.2 million kids who have anything from sprained ankles to more serious injuries like broken bones and concussions. The top three sports that cause injuries for boys are soccer, hockey and football. For girls, soccer, gymnastics and dance are the top three culprits. 9. Almost every kid is involved in a sport or activity In an era where we are worried about childhood obesity and a lack of participation in our youth, we should be encouraged by some of the numbers released in this study. It suggests that 84 percent of Canadian kids between the ages of 3-17 are participating in some type of sport and 60 percent are doing it on an organized basis. 10. Kids sports is a 5.7 billion dollar industry Every parent knows that putting their kids into organized sports and activities can be a real strain on the wallet. So it’s not surprising that this study suggests the industry is a $5.7 billion market with the average family spending about $1,000 annually for their kids to play sports.

MUSIC IS BRIDGE

Between Soul and Almighty Music is a gift. It’s a wonderful gift. We offer back this gift to our Creator also as a gift by our singing and praising. Music, with our voices singing, our ears listening, and hands creating music, enables us to physically express the spiritual joy of our heart. Music has the power to bring the mind, body, and spirit in unison as we reach out to God.

M

usic can be heard anywhere and everywhere: the grocery store, the gym, in the car, at work, at school, on the television, etc. Not only is music applied for entertainment but it can also be used for story telling, learning, religious rituals and medical therapy. Today, it is not uncommon for music to be used as a medicine for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety, stroke-victim recovery, stress, memory loss, and mental well-being. Music’s effect on the brain is a very profound and mysterious topic. It is said that music influences the process of thinking and analyzing, making work more enjoyable and efficient. Studies have shown that music increases the amount of endorphins (a chemical released in the brain to reduce pain and provide a “good feeling” state) in the brain, initially, jump-starting the bodies healing process. As it distracts the attention from pain, it concurrently generates chemical behaviors that promote healing. Along with physical healing and mental effects, music impacts human emotions. Often, someone

72

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

will listen to music when they are distraught, happy, need to focus, exercising, etc. Experiments show that music in a major key will cause a person to be happy, while the music in a minor key will bring sadder, depressed emotions. This paper will discuss how the music of major and minor keys differently effect human emotions. Throughout an average day, humans will experience one emotion after the other: sadness, happiness, frustration, anger, guilt, remorse, etc. But when one is asked the question “what is an emotion?” most find themselves dumbfounded. The answer to “what is an emotion” is not an easy one to answer. Music does inexplicable things to us. The hills are alive with the sound of music. Music moves us. It sways us and causes us to tap our fingers or bop our heads as we listen to the rhythm and beat of that Drake’s “In My Feelings” hip-hop hit.

pressure rises, the pupils in our eyes dilate, the hairs in our arms stand, and chills run down our spine. Through neuroimaging and other advanced technological devices, scientists can track some of the physiological changes— including the neurological activities and rewiring in our brain—when we listen to music. Musical nostalgia, according to the latest scientific research and findings, is real. Hearing those songs again brings back all kinds of emotional memories, including heartaches, love, exhilaration, individual expression, passion, happiness, anger, hatred, and frustration.

The Power of Music Music has the power to transport our minds and imaginations to another time or place. Whenever I hear a recording of the smooth soothing voice of Shreya Ghoshal, I’m immediately brought back to my 1990s childhood home back in the India Music heals us. It helps ease our pain and our hurts. Music shields us from bad, harmful stuff. Music changes us and transforms us. It changes our mood from sad to happy or even from happy to sad. Music brings us joy and sometimes move us to tears. It lifts up the spirit. As Plato said, “music is an art imbued with the power to penetrate into the very depths of the soul.” We have always known that music has profound effects on us physically, cognitively, emotionally, and spiritually. Ancient civilizations knew the role of music in our lives. The Ancient Greek philosophers philosophized about it. Many verses in the Old Testament refer to music, singing, and playing the stringed instruments. In battles that date back to the earliest part of human history, music was used to inspire and energize the warriors. During the American Civil War, there are accounts of the use of music to aid in the healing of the wounded soldiers. Music Touches Body and Soul We’ve always known that music has the power to impact our daily lives but it’s only in recent decades, through advances in modern science and technology, that we have captured, imaged, and measured the evidence of the complexities of the impact of music on us. Our blood

TIPS TO GET APPROVED FOR A MORTGAGE 1. Check your credit score In Canada, credit scores run from 300 to 900 across five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. The exact categories vary by credit bureau, but the point is the same. Your credit score is a snapshot of your overall financial health, so you should know what it is. Mortgage lenders use your score to gauge your financial trustworthiness and ability to repay your debts. The higher your credit score, the more likely you’ll be offered the lowest mortgage rates in Canada. Ideally, you want your score to be at least 660. In addition to your overall numerical score, your credit report will also contain information about late payments, number of accounts open, overall debt levels and length of credit history. It only takes a few minutes check your credit score online for free. Online credit checks will pull your score from one of Canada’s two credit bureaus, Equifax or TransUnion. It’s a good idea to check your score each quarter, and do everything you can to increase your credit score. 2. Save a larger down payment Buying a home requires some cash up front, also known as a down payment. The bigger your down payment is, the better, for a few reasons. The main reason is simply that the larger your down payment, the less you’ll need to borrow, and the less interest you’ll pay. However, just getting approved for a mortgage relies on the down payment as well. Less than $500,000: The minimum down payment is 5% of purchase price. $500,000 to $999,999: You’ll need 5% of the first $500,000, and 10% for the portion of the purchase price above $500,000. $1 million+: 20% of total purchase price.

In Canada, a down payment of less than 20% of the home’s purchase price requires the buyer to buy mortgage loan insurance. Paying these insurance premiums will increase your monthly mortgage payment. Overall, you’ll want to save up as much as you can for your down payment. Of course, that’s easier said than done, when houses in major cities such as Toronto and Vancouver can run into the million-dollar-plus range. However, the more cash you put down up front, the more likely you are to get approved by a mortgage lender. Using our mortgage payment calculator can help you test down payment and amortization scenarios, and compare variable and fixed mortgage rates. 3. Keep your income stable While you’re applying for a mortgage, it’s important to keep your day job. Mortgage providers won’t approve your mortgage without proof you can make your payments. A full-time job is the best way to prove that, as it guarantees your income long-term. Having been with an employer for a long time will also help your application, though it’s not the only thing that matters. If you’re applying for a mortgage with your partner, both of you having full-time jobs is ideal. If you’re employed on a casual basis or are a freelancer, it might be worth looking for a permanent role for the duration of your mortgage application, even if it’s just part-time. Getting a great mortgage with a low rate can save you tens of thousands of dollars, so it could be worth finding some more stable employment while you finish your application.loans don’t necessarily need to be at $0. However, your existing debt will impact how much you’ll be able to borrow, and at what rate. Keeping debt levels low is also good for your credit score in general.

It’s a strange world! Those who die for love become immortal and those who want to live for love are killed. St. Valentine was one of the victims of this type of the wrong perception of love. He was killed by the Roman emperor because he was helping the young lovers to marry each other in his church. But the emperor could not kill the fragrance of love inhabiting in everyone’s heart, on the contrary, it spread all over the world after Valentine’s death. And it feels like poetic justice that Valentine became the epitome of love. Unfortunately, the fizz of love that bubbles on Valentine’s day celebrations is merely a flicker of true love. Roses and gifts and parties are like warming up for the real marathon. While real love is becoming more and more difficult for contemporary people. Otherwise, why would we create a terrible society that is afflicted with violence and cruelty? Mind you, it is only a symptom, the real ailment is the appalling dearth of love. Osho diagnoses this situation as a real misery. And that this creates all sorts of complexes within human beings. Those wounds inside can surface in many ways: they can become physical illness; they can become mental illness – but deep-down man suffers from lack of love. Just as food is needed for the body, love is needed for the soul. Our second body – the etheric body – is a subtle energy layer around the physical body. This etheric body lives on love. Osho has deeply penetrated human existence and classified the function of the subtle bodies which have their own needs. He says, “Sex is physiological; love is not. Love has nothing to do with the physical body; it is concerned with the etheric body. But if it is not fulfilled, then even your

physical body may suffer. Not only does your physical body have needs that have to be fulfilled, but your etheric body also has needs. It has its hunger; it also needs food. Love is that food. “If you are loving, you are loving to everybody – not only to persons but to things as well. Even when you are alone, when no one is there, you are loving. It is just like breathing. If I take an oath that I will breathe only when I am with you, only death can follow. Breathing is not tied to any relationship. And for the etheric body, love is just like breathing. So, either you are loving, or you are not loving. The type of love that humanity has created is very dangerous. Even disease has not created as much nonsense as this so-called love has created. The whole of humanity is diseased because of this wrong notion of love. If you can love and be loving, irrespective of whom, then your second body can have a sense of well-being, a positive at-easeness.” The Upanishad observes: “ From wholeness emerges wholeness. Despite wholeness coming out of wholeness, it remains whole .” Although the wholeness comes from the whole it does not mean that the whole, the original whole, starts losing something. It loses nothing; it still remains the whole. This is a tremendously important statement. It will be good to understand it through your experience. You love somebody; that does not mean that because you have given it has become less; on the contrary, it may be even more. It is not ordinary economics. In the ordinary economics if you give something, of course you will have less.

78

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

If you have ten ordinary economics. In the ordinary economics if you give something, of course you will have less. If you have ten rupees with you and you give five to somebody you cannot still have ten rupees, and certainly you cannot have fifteen rupees; you will have only five rupees left. This is the ordinary economics, the economics of the outside world. The inner world is totally different. You give love and you have still the same love or maybe even more, because by giving, your love starts flowing. It may have been dormant, stagnant; by sharing it starts flowing. It is like you draw water from a well: the moment you draw water from a well, from the hidden springs more water starts coming to the well to fill the space But people live in the outside economics even in their inner life. The wife becomes very much angry if she finds her husband just being friendly with another woman. The husband becomes aggressive, jealous. if he finds that his wife was having a good time with somebody else, just enjoying, laughing. This is sheer stupidity! It is not understanding the inner world and the inner meta-economics. He is still thinking in terms of money -- that if his wife has laughed with somebody else that means she will be not able to laugh with him anymore; so much laughter is lost! Now he is a loser, and of course that creates anger. In fact, if the wife does not laugh with many people, does not enjoy friendship, is not loving, to many people, her love sources will die; she will not be able to love her husband either. She will forget how to love, her springs will go dry. That’s why you see husbands and wives looking so sad and bored with each other; it is bound to happen. They are

going against a natural inner law: you have more the more you give. Giving does not destroy anything in you; in fact it is creative. The person who loves many people will be able to love his wife or her husband more totally. But humanity has not understood this simple phenomenon even yet. We are still behaving in a very childish and stupid way. It is only in this century that Albert Einstein discovered the idea, the hypothesis that the universe is expanding. Five thousand years before Albert Einstein the Upanishads were saying the same thing: that the universe is continuously growing and expanding. The name they gave to the universe, brahmand, means that which goes on expanding, which is continuously growing. A meditator, has to live his life in such a way that everything goes on growing, expanding, without any limit. Your love, your joy, your silence, your life -- everything should be allowed to grow. And it can happen only if you allow the same to others. And the miracle is, the more we allow each other to love as many people as possible, you will find the person infinitely loving towards you, because love is not money, love is not a commodity. It is an inner energy which grows by sharing, which dies by not sharing. Abridged from OSHO book : I Am That/Osho Times International/Courtesy Osho International Foundation/www. osho.com

T

oday in this article we ae talking about Incompatible Food.Food is fuel of our body.We can’t live without food. Ayurveda recommend we should eat our food according to our genes. So many peoples are stomach disorders like digestion,Gastric Problem and other stomach issues. In most of cases these conditions usually begin when we start combining incompatible food (Viruddha Ahara). The idea of some foods digest well together while others do not . According to Ayurveda, the careful combining of food can effectively improve the quality of a person’s digestion. Moreover, combining foods of different radical energies can affect the digestive fire (Agni). Overwhelm Agni can lead to the creation of toxins, gas, and fermentation, etc. Ayurveda believes that each food has its own Rasa (Taste), Vipaka (a Post-Digestive Effect), and Virya (Heating or Cooling energy). Certain foods also possess Prabhava (Unexplained and undesirable effect). When 2-3 food of different Rasa, Vipaka, and Virya combined. They produce Prabhava which in turn overwhelm the Agni. Ayurveda suggests that a person should take fruits, proteins, fats, and starches separately at different times of the day. Because when they have eaten together they remain in the stomach for a minimum of 8 hours which can diminish the Agni and then this diminished Agni can cause variation in the intestinal flora. If this problem remains for a long time in the body it may cause Toxemia, Sinus and some other complex disorders. Therefore, Food combining is very important and a person should pay towards its eating habit because it is the most powerful and effective tool in Ayurveda for improving digestive health.

VIRUDDHA AHARA (INCOMPATIBLE FOOD) -An Ayurvedic View Ayurveda, an ancient system of Health care.Ayurveda theory is based on Trodoshas:Vata,Pitta and Kapha. These three doshas are present in everyone,According to Ayurveda we each have a dominant dosha that’s unwavering from birth, and ideally an equal (though often fluctuating) balance between the other two. When the doshas are balanced, we are healthy; when they are unbalanced, we develop disease.

Here are some food combinations to be avoided :

Milk: Milk which is a white color liquid is a primary source of nutrients for all human beings. Because it is easy to digest but it may not be consumed with those foods that are completely incompatible with it. Few names of the food that are incompatible with milk are Bananas, Meat, Sour Fruits, Fish, Cherries, Kitchari, Curd, and Bread containing yeast Mangoes: Mangoe is the most favorite fruit among the huge proportion of the population but the king of fruits is also incompatible with certain foods such as Yogurt, Cheese, and Cucumbers Lemon: Lemon is incompatible with Milk, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, and Yogurt, etc Honey Is Incompatible With: Ghee Radishes Are Incompatible With:Milk.Bananas and Raisins. Nightshades (Potato, Tomato, Eggplant, Chilies) are Incompatible With:Yogurt,Milk,Melon and Cucumber Yogurt Is Incompatible With:Milk,Sour Fruits,Melons,Hot drinks,Meat,Fish,Mangoes and cheese. Eggs are IncompatibleWith:Milk,Meat,Yogurt,Melons,Cheese,Fish and Bananas Corn Is Incompatible With:Dates,Raisins,Bananas

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

Here are some examples why we should not incompatible foods: Most of the people consume milk ad banana together but both are very challenging to digest. Both have different qualities. Milk has cooling nature and bananas have heating. But this is not only the problem. Furthermore, Bananas on their breakdown becomes sour. Therefore, Agni (Digestive fire) needs to digest both milk as well as the sour substance at the same time. This may affect the digestion power of Agni which in turn affects the intestinal flora. The combination of milk and banana is very heavy and it lead to the formation of Ama and blockage of channels, especially if the digestive power is weak. However, Ripe banana can be consumed with milk but during day time and only by those people who have good digestive power and fast metabolism. The combination of Cheese and Nightshades: is so demanding for the digestive fire. Nightshades contain the alkaloids. However, the main role of the alkaloids is to provide a defense against various infections. These alkaloids are very difficult to digest and they also have the capacity to disturb the Doshas present in the human body. But when we combine these nightshades with cheese which is very rich in fats and heavy oil. Agni faces huge difficulty in digesting them. In addition to the above-mentioned foods, a person should not eat Leftovers (More than 24 hours) and Raw foods with Cooked foods. Apart from this Beans eaten along Fruits, Cheese, Eggs, Fish, Milk, Meat, and Yogurt can also cause various types of food interactions. Cold or iced water should be avoided during or after meals because it slows the digestion as well as Agni. A person should properly chew the food for its softening and to ensure its proper mixing with saliva.

ADHD

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

W

hat is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition in which a person has trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks, tends to act without thinking, and has trouble sitting still. It may begin in early childhood and can continue into adulthood. Without treatment, ADHD can cause problems at home, at school, at work, and with relationships. In the past, ADHD was called attention deficit disorder (ADD). What causes ADHD? The exact cause is not clear, but ADHD tends to run in families.

What are the symptoms? The three types of ADHD symptoms include: •Trouble paying attention. People with ADHD are easily distracted. They have a hard time focusing on any one task. •Trouble sitting still for even a short time. This is called hyperactivity. Children with ADHD may squirm, fidget, or run around at the wrong times. Teens and adults often feel restless and fidgety. They aren’t able to enjoy reading or other quiet activities. •Acting before thinking. People with ADHD may talk too loud, laugh too loud, or become angrier than the situation calls for. Children may not be able to wait for their turn or to share. This makes it hard for them to play with other children. Teens and adults may make quick decisions that have a long-term impact on their lives. They may spend too much money or change jobs often.

100

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

How is ADHD diagnosed? ADHD is often diagnosed when a child is between 6 and 12 years old. Teachers may notice symptoms in children who are in this age group. First, the child will have tests to make sure that he or she doesn’t have other problems such as learning disabilities, depression, or anxiety disorder. The doctor will use guidelines from the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA) to diagnose ADHD. The doctor may also look at written reports about the child’s behaviour. Parents, teachers, and others who have regular contact with the child prepare these reports.

How is it treated? There is no cure for ADHD, but treatment may help control the symptoms. Treatment may include medicines and behaviour therapy. Parents and other adults need to closely watch children after they begin to take medicines for ADHD. The medicines may cause side effects such as loss of appetite, headaches or stomach aches, tics or twitches, and problems sleeping. Side effects usually get better after a few weeks. If they don’t, the doctor can lower the dose. Therapy focuses on making changes in the environment to improve the child’s behaviour. Often, counselling and extra support at home and at school help children succeed at school and feel better about themselves.

How does ADHD affect adults? Many adults don’t realize that they have ADHD until their children are diagnosed. Then they begin to notice their own symptoms. Adults with ADHD may find it hard to focus, organize, and finish tasks. They often forget things. But they also often are very creative and curious. They love to ask questions and keep learning. Some adults with ADHD learn to manage their lives and find careers that let them use those strengths.

WHAT IS SOCIAL DISTANCING? Two people with masks on 6 feet apart Social distancing, also called “physical distancing, means keeping space between yourself and other people outside of your home. To practice social or physical distancing: Stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people DO NOT GATHER IN GROUPS

Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings In addition to everyday steps to prevent COVID-19, keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to this virus and slowing its spread locally and across the country and world.

107

The Times of Canada -Apr 2020

When COVID-19 is spreading in your area, everyone should limit close contact with individuals outside your household in indoor and outdoor spaces. Since people can spread the virus before they know they are sick, it is important to stay away from others when possible, even if you have no symptoms. Social distancing is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. WHY PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING? COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact (within about 6 feet) for a prolonged period. Spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs. Recent studies indicate that people who are infected but do not have symptoms likely also play a role in the spread of COVID-19. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. However, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. COVID-19 can live for hours or days on a surface, depending on factors such as sun light and humidity. Social distancing helps limit contact with infected people and contaminated surfaces. Although the risk of severe illness may be different for everyone, anyone can get and spread COVID-19. Everyone

has a role to play in slowing the spread and protecting themselves, their family, and their community. Note: Some people may transmit COVID-19 even though they do not show any symptoms. In situations where physical distancing is difficult to maintain, wearing a non-medical mask or face covering (i.e. constructed to completely cover the nose and mouth without gaping, and secured to the head by ties or ear loops) provides a barrier between your respiratory droplets and the people and surfaces around you. It may also stop you from touching your nose or mouth, which is another way the virus can get into your body. Note: The Government of Canada has implemented an Emergency Order under the Quarantine Act. This order means that everyone who is entering Canada by air, sea or land has to stay home for 14 days in order to limit the spread of COVID-19. The 14-day period begins on the day you enter Canada. If you have travelled and have no symptoms, you must quarantine (self-isolate). If you have travelled and have symptoms, you must isolate. Buying vs. Renting a House Eventually An Answer To Whether It’s Cheaper To Rent Or Buy A House In Canada. This is good news for some, and bad news for most of us. For many of us living in major cities in Canada, today's tough housing market makes buying a home someday seem virtually impossible. House prices have gone through the roof across the country. Renting is also expensive, though, and the price adds up, especially because the average cost of rent is perpetually increasing from coast to coast. When you have to pay rent each month it means that over time your costs increase. Which brings us to the age-old question - which option is actually cheaper?

Latest report has finally given us an answer, and it may surprise you or, make you sad. Mortgage Professionals Canada has released a report titled Owning versus Renting a Home in Canada. It looks at the total prices that homeowners pay, compared to what people who rent can expect to pay over an extended period of time. The report looked at 266 scenarios in a number of cities across Canada. The top three places that were examined were Quebec City, the Greater Toronto Area and Vancouver.

The overall conclusion of the report is that, in most cases, it is cheaper to buy a house in Canada than it is to rent for a long period of time which is bad news for anyone who has an apartment and not enough money to get into the housing market.
