As we continue to better ourselves and the community, we have made great strides locally in economic development and quality of life. The Greater Hall Chamber continues to focus on the importance of existing industries in Gainesville-Hall County, and business remains strong. In 2018, 14 new and expanded businesses created 1,200 new jobs and $310 million in capital investment. Since 2013, 150 new and expanded businesses have announced 6,350 jobs and $1.3 billion in capital investment.

We were fortunate to have Governor Nathan Deal as special guest at Eggs & Issues last month where he was recognized for his service to our community and the state at the newly opened Lanier Technical College. Our own Kit Dunlap was recognized for her 25 years of leadership, and the college's Ramsey Conference Center Ballroom was named in her honor.

Much of our success is due to HALLmark, an economic and community development initiative.

Some 25 years ago, Gainesville-Hall County leaders had the insight and boldness to invest in this initiative and Greater Hall Chamber has been growing community prosperity ever since. From Vision 2030 Public Art to over 900 Leadership Hall County graduates, this program is making a huge impact on our community. From the development of a comprehensive Small Business Program to implementing corporate wellness initiatives, the Chamber is making a difference. The next five-year initiative of HALLmark will continue to grow on this foundation as the Chamber partners with Live Oak Community Development for HALLmark 2020-2025 to assure our future success. Look for updates on this initiative in the near future.

Small Business of the Month Poor Richard's Restaurant Richard and Bonnie LeCain established Poor Richard’s in April 1977 with seating for 60 people.

Bonnie served as hostess and Richard was in the kitchen. The first year was a struggle, but they gained business by listening to customers. In 1978, they opened the basement area, increasing capacity to 140. In 1983, the adjacent property was purchased and the building was literally jacked up, moved 50 yards and attached it to the original building, increasing to 220 seats.

The last addition was completed in 2005, with a 24-seat patio.

Richard and Bonnie are now proudly serving fourth generation guests. They continue to prepare all sauces and dressings from scratch. Beef is aged for tenderness and flavor, seafood arrives twice a week from Florida, and produce delivered daily. Key employees remain on staff guaranteeing the restaurant is as consistent today as it was nearly 40 years ago. Chamber Board Nominations The Greater Hall Chamber is seeking nominations for three-year Directors. Serving with Chamber Chair Carol Burrell on the 2019 Nominating Committee is Chair Elect Brian Rochester, Immediate Past Chair Perry Barnett and Past Chairs Lee Hemmer, Brian Daniel, David Lee, Dixie Truelove and Randall Frost. The committee will select new director nominees as stated in the Chamber By-Laws: Any member in good standing may submit one or more nominations. Nominees will be named in February 2019 and elected in March 2019. Five to seven director positions will be elected and will serve a 3-year term beginning July 1, 2019. Leadership Hall's interactive Law Day program included the Gainesville Police Department's (GPD) staging of a drunk driving and active shooter simulation, as the Georgia State Patrol flew in their helicopter for demos.
